Latest / Ghost Cult Magazine Podcast / PODCAST: Episode 912 - Why do the Grammy Awards Hate on Metal?
Transcript
- 0:54Yo, what's up everybody, it's your boy.
- 0:57Late night Kefi at ghostcultman.com First live
- 1:00stream in a minute. I've been pretty busy and open
- 1:06about the fact that I've been suffering quite a bit of burnout
- 1:09so far. End of 25, beginning of 2026.
- 1:17What's up Todd rocks and lone Skinhead?
- 1:21I'm trying to get TikTok to work but appreciate everybody for
- 1:27being here up TikTok you piece of shit.
- 1:32Doesn't matter US or not TikTok crazy shit, but any who.
- 1:40All right, I think I got it now so haven't live streamed in a
- 1:47minute and I wanted to jump on and do do a live stream about
- 1:54something. So I did a poll tonight in our
- 1:57community tab on ghostcultbank.com and seemed
- 2:03like the voting was going for the Grammys.
- 2:06I talked about maybe bringing Ozfest back, but I've actually
- 2:08been working on an Ozfest video for a year practically, maybe a
- 2:12little bit less, maybe like 10 months.
- 2:15So I want to like finish that video and incorporate the new
- 2:18information about that. I maybe could have did a review
- 2:22of the new Puscifer, which I love.
- 2:24Spoiler alert, we gave it an 8 on the website.
- 2:28Raven 669 is here. What up, what up, what up?
- 2:31Thanks for tuning in late at night.
- 2:32This is not the normal time I go live, but what is the normal
- 2:36anything these days? But anyway, I'm here and thanks
- 2:39for being here if you are here. And the best experience for this
- 2:43is always YouTube on our various YouTube channels, Twitch,
- 2:50Instagram, where I'm also hanging out and watching and
- 2:55let's see, Facebook. Anyway, we're on all the things.
- 3:06I'll be back later today. It's almost midnight here on the
- 3:09West Coast. I'll be back about 5:00 PM
- 3:12Pacific. Usually there are abouts,
- 3:14depending on my work day to do the weekly Ritual, which is our
- 3:17weekly Rocket Metal News Live show.
- 3:20We recap all the things of the week, the major stories.
- 3:23There's a lot of crazy shit going on, and this is one of
- 3:27them. So the Grammy Awards for this
- 3:29past weekend and, you know, Grammys have a sordid history.
- 3:35Do award shows really matter to metal heads and punks?
- 3:39I don't. I mean, you know, very self
- 3:41congratulatory, but you know, we like debating and complaining
- 3:44about these things, right? So November official is here.
- 3:47What's up? And Ena is here, I think, and
- 3:50Robert Hood is here. So Grammy Awards happened.
- 3:56Some things were metal and cool, some things were absolutely not
- 4:00cool, just bizarre. And so, yeah, I'm here to talk
- 4:06about it because do the Grammys actually hate metal?
- 4:09Is it? I'm not going to lie, it's a
- 4:11little, I'm, I'm baiting a little bit with that title.
- 4:14But I think it's clear that they don't understand metal.
- 4:17And I'll make a point as to why I I'm not one of these people
- 4:23that's like Metallica should play the Super Bowl and metal,
- 4:27we deserve more respect. It's like we actually don't.
- 4:30It's outsider music for outside. But at the same time, it'd be
- 4:34cool if we were treated with the modicum of respect.
- 4:37So I'm here to talk about that. I haven't been live streaming a
- 4:41lot. Like I said, been suffering a
- 4:42lot of burnout. I did a Megadeth album review a
- 4:47couple weeks ago, seemed to be very well reviewed and and
- 4:50received. We probably gave it one of the
- 4:54better marks of any of the major websites.
- 4:56I consider us a major metal website.
- 4:58I'm not just a YouTube showing up and spouting my opinions.
- 5:02I'm a 20 year music journalist. I've done thousands of band
- 5:04interviews. I used to photograph bands all
- 5:07over the world. Ghost Cult is a global
- 5:09organization. We cover shows all over the
- 5:11world, metal festivals, everything.
- 5:13I spent time today planning no less than four festival
- 5:16coverages and seven or eight tours.
- 5:19So keep it to us for news and reviews and these live streams
- 5:24and everything. Applesauce what up, what up?
- 5:28Oyooski is here, Sasha's here. Thanks for tuning in late
- 5:32Tattooed guy 48 what up? So I did a Megadeth live stream
- 5:38a few weeks back. I'm hoping now to just start
- 5:40picking it up again. Here's our a live stream menu.
- 5:47If you're feeling tipsy, feel free to tip us either at any of
- 5:51the places you can tip us and or give us a super thanks or a
- 5:55super like. We recently launched a new live
- 5:58channel on YouTube and eventually all these lives are
- 6:01going to live there. But I still like hanging out on
- 6:05TikTok and all the things. But there's the links in the
- 6:08description if you want to. If you want to tip us,
- 6:12exsanguinated very cool band name and Mimi is here.
- 6:16Thanks for liking the live anybody oy anybody here that
- 6:20follows us? Thank you very much.
- 6:21I love fish. I love fishbowl.
- 6:25Anybody here that follows us? I will follow you back at the
- 6:27end of the broadcast here. So there's our tip menu.
- 6:32We're on cash app, we're on all the things.
- 6:34I have another podcast. So in addition to my weekly live
- 6:36stream, which will happen tomorrow afternoon, Thursday
- 6:39afternoon about 5:00 PM Pacific, 8:00 PM.
- 6:43Eastern, 1:00 AM UK time, I also have the glacially musical
- 6:50podcast, Beer Medal and swearing.
- 6:52We are continuing our series on the solo career of Ronnie James
- 6:56Dio, at least the early albums, and we'll be back with a new
- 7:01episode tomorrow night. With that, there's our Cash App.
- 7:06So the Grammys. Why are we talking about this?
- 7:08Do award shows even manner? Why are we talking about the
- 7:14Grammys? Because the Grammys like, you
- 7:17know, we want them to do, you know, like I have a long history
- 7:20with the Grammys. I actually met Grammy people
- 7:23like when I was in high school and I'm.
- 7:26I went to a predominantly deal all the way back to this deal in
- 7:30the profits days. Nice work.
- 7:32Upstate New York, my home state. So yeah, by the way, Cortland,
- 7:44which is his original hometown in upstate New York, the school
- 7:48in Cortland has his original microphone and microphone stand
- 7:52that they found in his parents house when they when they moved
- 7:57out or moved the house out. So the Grammys, why are we here
- 7:59talking about that? You know, just like the Hall of
- 8:03Fame, some of these things are very congratulatory.
- 8:06Real metal heads don't need awards.
- 8:08We don't need halls of fame. But let's just talk about why
- 8:11the Grammys fail time and time again when it comes to heavy
- 8:14music. They just fail and we'll talk
- 8:17about why. So this is kind of in a way a
- 8:20follow up to a live stream I did, and it's on our podcast
- 8:25now. Hey, Lorna is here.
- 8:26What's up? Lorna, Ghost cultist is in the
- 8:28house over on the Instagrams. You know, I did a show a while
- 8:35back about Rick Biano, who generally speaking, I like.
- 8:38He's actually one of the few, one of the few music Youtubers
- 8:45or content creators about music that has produced albums that
- 8:50have. So you've heard Stone Temple
- 8:52Pilots, Shinedown, a bunch of other bands, you know, Marvelous
- 8:573 Lit, whatever, a lot of stuff he worked on and you know, but
- 9:02also he always talks about metal being dead and it's rage bait.
- 9:05He's kind of a boomer. He has boomer takes.
- 9:08You can't compare metal bands to pop stars like Charli XCX and
- 9:13Billie Eilish and Beyoncé. Just not apples to apples.
- 9:16You can't measure an underground art form like metal or punk.
- 9:20Even the pop punk is not at the same level on streaming
- 9:24platforms as the biggest pop stars in the world.
- 9:27It's kind of dumb, but OK. So I did AI did a thing on Rippy
- 9:33Otto. Here's the thumbnail.
- 9:34Rippy Otto is wrong about metal. And that's kind of reminded me
- 9:38of the Grammys list, the, you know, kind of watching the
- 9:41replays of the Grammy stuff. I'll talk first about what they
- 9:44got right, and then we're going to talk about where they go off
- 9:47a Cliff. And, you know, by no means am I
- 9:50criticizing necessarily any of the winners.
- 9:53I'm just calling out into question what I see as a failure
- 9:58of them to understand the genre. And they have voting members
- 10:01from metal bands. So it's obviously political.
- 10:04It's obviously on purpose. It's obviously like, oh, metal
- 10:07is not going to get a lot of reacting.
- 10:09All you know. On the plus side, Spirit Box was
- 10:11nominated and Lost perform live on the show.
- 10:14They perform soft spine. I get no little amount of joy of
- 10:19watching Spirit Box play a song destroying Ronnie Radke, who was
- 10:23not nominated for one Grammy. I will also say, like late in
- 10:27the year, you know, the so like, it's murky about like what the
- 10:30parameters are, to wit, to be nominated.
- 10:34You see a lot of labels, not bands, but labels campaigning to
- 10:38get nominated, especially in underground music.
- 10:41Because we are an X Factor. We are an unknown.
- 10:44Oh, that's cute. The screamy people, the dark and
- 10:47scary people, you know, but it was cool to see Spirit Box
- 10:51perform on the show and they killed it, of course.
- 10:54And then the host who honestly have no, you know, I have no
- 10:57basis for the host, but you know, the host was like, well,
- 11:02that was fierce AF. And I was like, God, so cringy.
- 11:06Like, you know, even Courtney heard the quote probably and was
- 11:11like, I don't know why he just said that.
- 11:14That shit sucks. But all right, fine.
- 11:16You know, it is just what it is, dude, following us.
- 11:19Anybody watching the show on the tube of you or twitch again,
- 11:23just like TikTok. We'll follow you back at the end
- 11:26of the show when I get my bearings and do my little post
- 11:30show review. So spare box performed and they
- 11:33were awesome. And then the Post Malone tribute
- 11:37to Ozzy with Ozzy's band, basically basic the basically
- 11:40his band from back to the beginning.
- 11:42Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers. I see Slash there, the Mckagan
- 11:47and Watts wearing like a full length Glammy for a coat.
- 11:50But you know, he's proven himself to be a pretty solid
- 11:53guy. I think we learned from those
- 11:56Aussie documentaries late in the year what a close friend Ozzy he
- 11:59was and how Ozzy and him had a really cute relationship.
- 12:04You know, the tribute was nice. They did pay tribute to Ace a
- 12:07little bit also. It was nice to see that,
- 12:09although I have gripes with the immemorium section always and
- 12:13especially in a minute. So you know, Posty, he's a huge
- 12:19pop star and he happens to love rock and I think he's in his
- 12:22kind of country era right now. It'd be kind of fun to see him
- 12:25pivot to metal or rock. You know, he's obviously he
- 12:28played with Nirvana a couple of times or reformed version of
- 12:31Nirvana without Kurt. He's done covers of Alice In
- 12:35Chains. There's videos of him rocking
- 12:37out to metal core and and death metal and Biohazard rapping
- 12:41along to Biohazard with Biohazard.
- 12:43Kind of fun. But I would make a case also
- 12:49that as much as Ozzy is the icon for the entire metal genre, he's
- 12:55more of a pop culture figure more than anything else.
- 12:58And he had won recent Grammys for his two last albums with
- 13:02Post Malone also contributing. So I think it was like super
- 13:07interesting that, you know, obviously, look, Ozzy has
- 13:10transcended rock and metal to like pop cult icon status.
- 13:14So of course they were going to do a tribute to him.
- 13:16That was nice that that was in the works and they were
- 13:19rehearsing and planning that and it was cool.
- 13:22So I thought that was well done. Like, you know, for what it's
- 13:25worth, at least they had something that's nice.
- 13:28Young Blood is having a moment again.
- 13:30What is what constitutes eligibility for a Grammy?
- 13:34It's just like any other award show.
- 13:36There should be a sort of a finite point, like an album came
- 13:41out here, a single came out here.
- 13:42Nothing can be, you know, credited.
- 13:45I don't want to be super cynical, Mimi writes.
- 13:48I knew that shit the moment he even considered doing stuff with
- 13:50Young Blood, right? I knew, you know, a cynic in me
- 13:56is like, of course all these bands covered Black Sabbath and
- 13:59then put out Black Sabbath singles from their covers.
- 14:02Lamb of God did it. They're not nominated for a
- 14:05Grammy. Tool has been playing their
- 14:07Black Sabbath cover on tour, Hand of Doom and well in their
- 14:12late end of the year, beginning of this year tour dates, which I
- 14:15think is fresh, you know, so Youngblood kind of really, first
- 14:18of all, the song changes is about Bill, the end of Bill
- 14:21Ward's first marriage and Youngblood killed it.
- 14:25It was really nice to see him win and he won.
- 14:30You know, it kind of got Frank Bellow from Anthrax a a Grammy
- 14:34award-winning, you know, moment where he was on 70 tons of medal
- 14:38with anthrax, played one gig and then left the boat to go to the
- 14:41Grammy Awards ceremony, which is insane.
- 14:47So you know, I'm I'm not mad at youngblood.
- 14:49I know people feel like, you know, why did they anoint this
- 14:52guy in any way? Why did he get Andrew is here?
- 14:56What's up brother Danzig 5 handed doom.
- 14:58Exactly. But I'm just talking about the
- 15:02Grammys and just the relationship the Grammys have to
- 15:05metal and not complaining but just kind of noting why they
- 15:09don't get it right year after year.
- 15:11And it's I could easily go back to Metallica and Jethro Tull but
- 15:17other times they also got it wrong.
- 15:19Like Motörhead won a Grammy for a Metallica cover, not one
- 15:22Motörhead song. Grand Delight Motörhead is not,
- 15:25you know, necessarily the first thing of mind when you think of
- 15:28these grandiose greatest bands ever.
- 15:30But I think a Motörhead is one of the greatest bands ever.
- 15:32But again, award shows Aerosmith and Suicide Boys actually
- 15:35embarrassing, right? Give props to people that they
- 15:38have some fair takes, but he is taking the Grammys.
- 15:40Don't like medal Leonard I agree, man.
- 15:42That's my point here. Black artists.
- 15:44Oh, of course, man, of course, like that's beyond the shadow of
- 15:48a doubt as we're in Black History Month that like again, a
- 15:51lot of people are like rock music is white people stuff
- 15:54stupid. But yeah, yes, High On Fire one.
- 16:00I agree. And I love High On Fire 1
- 16:02Grammys. But you know, again, there's a
- 16:04push, you know, don't get mad at bands like a lot.
- 16:07I know that people like bands a lot of times don't even run
- 16:10their own social. So like there was a big backlash
- 16:13in like October, November. For your consideration, if
- 16:16you're a voter for the Grammys, please think of Fit for an
- 16:18Autopsy on Nuclear Blast Records.
- 16:20And people like shitting on this band that has been like a
- 16:23legendary underground band for 20 years and it really took them
- 16:2720 years to make it and you know, they're doing about as
- 16:32well as ever their last few albums. 100% Mimi, I agree
- 16:35Motörhead is great. Awesome.
- 16:37Mimi, I really appreciate you. Thank you for being here and
- 16:40dropping those comments. 100% So you know you're good for
- 16:43Youngblood. I don't care about the word, you
- 16:46know, industry plant is not a real thing for me because in
- 16:49that way, every artist that leaves a band to go solo is an
- 16:52industry plant. So like, you know, they do.
- 16:54People like to throw around hatred and dumb shit.
- 16:57Witness Metallica. Yes, we also have Metallica and
- 17:00Jethro Tull. But like the Grammys just don't.
- 17:02Like, I'm going to get to a point here in a second where I
- 17:04talk about like, why they don't get it.
- 17:07But good for Youngblood and good for the people in the band, you
- 17:10know? You know, I'll shout it out in a
- 17:12second. It was like Nuno Betancourt, who
- 17:15I think has been nominated for a Grammy with Extreme and Rihanna,
- 17:19but #1 Adam Wakeman, Sleep Tokens drummer, Sleep Tokens
- 17:24drummer was the only Sleep Token member to get a Grammy Award so
- 17:27far. And Frankie Bello, one of my
- 17:29heroes from my hometown boys in Anthrax.
- 17:33Anybody who's seen my vest, my patch vest, Anthrax is my
- 17:36Backpage. So good for young blood, but
- 17:38also, like, you know, I don't want to.
- 17:41On one hand, it's like, yeah, he's a relatively new artist.
- 17:44This picture of him is from, like, Warped Tour 2019, before
- 17:50they went on the hiatus, before they came back.
- 17:53But that being said, if anyone wants to nominate Sundial Shine
- 17:55for a 2026 album of the year, hell yeah, brother, you know,
- 17:58that's coming. You know, that's possible.
- 18:02It feels like a cat with a stunt.
- 18:04Yeah, of course, Of course. Of course.
- 18:05I'm with you on that. I'm with you on that.
- 18:08So Youngblood, good for Youngblood and good for the
- 18:11people who just, you know, again, like, was it calculated?
- 18:13He, you know, he did an incredible job.
- 18:15You couldn't know before the show what he was going to do.
- 18:17No one knew except the people making the record.
- 18:20Did his record label say, hey, let's record this and if it
- 18:23comes out great, we'll put it out.
- 18:25Doesn't mean you're going to win a Grammy.
- 18:26You know, it's very cynical and jaded to be like, it's a
- 18:29calculated thing. It happened last summer.
- 18:32We'll talk more about that, too. Let me send you for birth.
- 18:35Yeah, brother from from Brooke. Yeah.
- 18:38Yeah. We send me the promo.
- 18:40We're doing vinyl unboxings, a whole bunch of shit.
- 18:42This year. We're doing all.
- 18:43We're stepping up our game, The Cure.
- 18:46The Cure has been nominated for a Grammy several times,
- 18:49definitely in their big era of the late 80s, early 90s.
- 18:52Ben's been around for 50 years. Finally won two Grammys.
- 18:56This is a picture we captured the Cure at at Wyatt Fest 2023,
- 19:04which I attended and I I've seen the cure a couple of times and I
- 19:08left early to go see Danzig headline on my birthday.
- 19:12Sorry, but like this is we still covered the we covered the
- 19:15festival, we covered the you know, we got photos, we got a
- 19:18review of the cure's career spanning set, you know, good for
- 19:22the cure. I'll talk about that.
- 19:24You know the alternative, You know the alternative category
- 19:28and 9 Inch Nails winning for, you know, best rock song for As
- 19:33alive as You need Me to be from Tron eras, one of my favorite
- 19:36top five records of last year. Kind.
- 19:39You know they didn't acknowledge it on their socials.
- 19:41They didn't come even though they are in LA prepping for a
- 19:44tour. They did not come to, You know
- 19:47they have not acknowledged the win.
- 19:49They don't care. They appreciate their fans.
- 19:51They love doing the soundtrack. Trent has a very sordid history
- 19:56with the Grammys of distaste and dislike and has slammed them.
- 20:01So a lot of a lot of wild shit, but OK, good for them.
- 20:05And then it brings us to Turnstile.
- 20:07And these Turnstile photos you're seeing associated with
- 20:10this live stream are courtesy of our homie Annie Atlasman.
- 20:15She photographed the band at a headline show in Greece that was
- 20:19like thousands of people. And the band put on an
- 20:21incredible ripro and show. And this is where I'm absolutely
- 20:26not picking on Turnstile. We love them.
- 20:28Respect to them, you know, never enough.
- 20:31Great album. Is it metal?
- 20:34Is it metal? It's kind of punk adjacent and
- 20:37punk adjacent is metal adjacent. You know what if you start
- 20:40calling everything metal, nothing is but like turns out,
- 20:43definitely not metal. Are they heavy as shit live?
- 20:45Are they fun? Are they righteous?
- 20:47Are they like, you know, whatever you want to say about
- 20:49them, like one of the highlights of of the younger generation of
- 20:52bands right now? You know, I saw that on the list
- 20:57of the 202025 music of Loudwire. Yeah.
- 21:02Well, you know, they are putting stuff out.
- 21:07But yeah, so these photos are from Greece where they, you
- 21:09know, they're literally a headline act now.
- 21:11I wouldn't be surprised if they started headlining festivals and
- 21:15they had an, their documentary came out at Tribeca Film
- 21:18Festival, extremely prestigious. I've got to cover it before for
- 21:21a ghost cult and other things. And so just, you know, man, like
- 21:26in turn style metal. So let's just take a second.
- 21:29I'm going to take a beat and I'm going to run down these winners
- 21:32and these categories. So like, on one hand, Spirit Box
- 21:34playing on the show. Rarely does metal get to play
- 21:39live. So we had two metal performances
- 21:41on the show. Grant, you know, Ozzy's tribute
- 21:44made the Osbournes cry. You know, they're broken by all
- 21:49this. Youngblood was there to, you
- 21:51know, accept his award. All the guys were there.
- 21:52It was really cool. If you like Jelly Roll, he won
- 21:57the best contemporary country artist.
- 21:58Country's a kind of horrible genre.
- 22:00Jelly Roll's pretty talented. And then he went on like a, you
- 22:03know, yeah, he he's he's solid. I, I had was looking forward to
- 22:08interviewing him and he was, he missed the festival date I was
- 22:11at because he had my vaginas, which sucks.
- 22:14But anyway, anyway, let's, let's talk about these things.
- 22:20So best rock song was 9 Inch Nails for As Alive As You Need
- 22:24Me to Be from Tron Errors up against Caramel Sleep Token Glum
- 22:29by Hayley Williams. Good solo album, but certainly
- 22:32like that more than the last Paramore album which I did not
- 22:37enjoy but OK Good for Haley, Never Enough by Turnstile and
- 22:41Zombie by Young. All right, cool Beth rock
- 22:46performance was the aforementioned Youngblood
- 22:49victory Changes live from Villa Park.
- 22:52Youngblood featuring Nuno Betancourt, Frank Bellow, Adam
- 22:55Wakeman and two from Sleep Token up against Amalinda Sniffers.
- 22:59Pretty good punk rock band. You should not be doing that.
- 23:01The Emptiness Machine from Linkin Park, big hit single from
- 23:04their comeback album Never Enough Again by Turnstile and
- 23:08Mirtazapine by Hayley Williams. Also a pill I used to take.
- 23:12It's an anti anxiety medicine Beth rock album and this is
- 23:17weird turnstile one for never enough which like OK rock is
- 23:21better than metal in terms of what describes their genre.
- 23:27They won over I think in an upset over Private Music by
- 23:31Deftones. I quit by Haim.
- 23:33I don't really consider Haim a rock band.
- 23:35Maybe like an alternative indie rock band that has become big
- 23:39but like certainly not rockin in my opinion.
- 23:43From zero Linkin Park, turnstile wins and idols, which was
- 23:47Youngblood's album earlier last year and then here's like best
- 23:53metal performance birds by turnstile killer track, best
- 23:58track on the record just about and they beat out absolutely
- 24:04much more metal bands than Turnstile, Dream Theater, Ghost
- 24:08sleep Token and Spirit box. Spirit Box nominated for Soft
- 24:11Spine and losing. So I don't know, you know, this
- 24:16turnstile best metal performance is that I was actually really
- 24:20surprised that Ghost Sleep Token or Spirit Box didn't win.
- 24:27I didn't think Dream Theater would win.
- 24:29They have won a Grammy before Best alternative music album.
- 24:33So here's where The Cure comes in.
- 24:36The Cure won both of these alternative categories.
- 24:38So there's one metal category and a metal band as far as I'm
- 24:41concerned, Much more closer to hardcore and pop punk and indie
- 24:46rock, but heavy. And they still play their
- 24:49earliest material live. Their heaviest shit.
- 24:53But that's alternative music album Sable Fable by Bon Iver.
- 24:57Sure. Songs of the Lost World, which
- 24:59technically came out and the awards were last weekend.
- 25:03The album came out in November of 2024.
- 25:08Don't tap the glass tile of the creator, OK?
- 25:12Moisturizer by Wet Leg. I love Wet Leg only for coming
- 25:15out and like destroying Oasis and Oasis fans and ego death at
- 25:21a Bachelorette party. Hayley Williams solo out again,
- 25:24much better than Param and so the Cure one.
- 25:29And again, it's their first couple of Grammys ever.
- 25:34But what that's for what it's worth, feels a little
- 25:36performative to give them the Grammy.
- 25:41Randar the barbarian says Megadeth Word.
- 25:43I did a Megadeth review of their new album on my last live
- 25:48stream. Have not done a live stream in a
- 25:50few weeks to be honest. Best alternative music
- 25:53performance again. Everything is peaceful.
- 25:55Love Bon Iver alone by the Cure, Seeing stars by turnstile mange
- 26:00out by Wet leg and Parachute by Hayley Williams.
- 26:03So not for nothing Turnstile not criticizing the band but to see
- 26:08them nominated over like 3 or 4 whole categories, best album,
- 26:11different singles, best metal performance just doesn't track
- 26:16and it just feels like the Grammys don't get what makes a
- 26:20metal band and I'm not. And again like I know sleep
- 26:22token fans and Deftones fans are up in arms.
- 26:25They really got passed over. I think Private Music was easily
- 26:30an incredible outlast and certainly much more metal than
- 26:33Turnstile or What is metal. I'm not trying to gatekeep
- 26:35things, I'm just trying to say if you're going to have an award
- 26:38show, understand what the metal bands are doing and what they
- 26:42are. What constitutes a real metal
- 26:44band? If you wanted to give the
- 26:45Alternative Music Awards to the Cure, then say that, but really,
- 26:51Turnstile should have won for those categories and the one of
- 26:54the metal bands should have. Now we're down A1 metal
- 26:57category. Not best metal song, not best
- 27:00metal album, just best metal performance, whatever the fuck
- 27:03that means for a single song and not to give it to a metal band
- 27:07is weird to me. And then the real band.
- 27:11So that's not, I'm not mad about it.
- 27:12I'm just, I'm just confuzzled. You get me people.
- 27:15I'm just confused. I'm just confused, but OK.
- 27:20And then this shit. So again, the immemorium you had
- 27:23Roberta Flack very, you know, hugely inspirational female
- 27:28singer from the 70s D Angelo died, you know, super
- 27:32inspirational artist from the last 30 years.
- 27:39And then they, you know, they in memoriams and then they leave
- 27:41out my man Dirty B Brent Hines, a master then who has won a
- 27:45Grammy. They were nominated for three
- 27:47Grammys and won once and like to not have him in the immemorial
- 27:54is insane to me. Should they at least not be
- 27:56tracking who has won a Grammy in the past and if they passed away
- 28:01to mention them? It took us, it would have took a
- 28:03second. Just embarrassing for music's
- 28:06biggest night. That's to me kind of
- 28:09unforgivable. There are other ones people were
- 28:11mad about like that not being mentioned.
- 28:13They won a lifetime achievement Grammy.
- 28:15Some comments in this live on TikTok were filtered out to
- 28:19protect the community's experience.
- 28:21As always, someone in the comments is being a Jackass.
- 28:24Dillinger Compound is here very late at night.
- 28:26What's up brother? I'll be back tomorrow with my
- 28:28weekly show. I'm just complaining about the
- 28:30Grammys and their overall failure to understand metal.
- 28:33Metal fans, the metal genre. I like Turnstile a great deal.
- 28:37I bought that album. I'm really a big fan of it, of
- 28:40them and what they do. But also to not have a metal
- 28:43band win the 1 Grammy Award that is actually for metal is insane.
- 28:49And again, the slight to Mastodon hurts my feelings.
- 28:52New Mastodon album this year. Gorley will probably get
- 28:55nominated again. Maybe they will win.
- 28:58I hope they dedicate it to Brent.
- 29:01And then again, here's this huge turnstile live photo I just
- 29:04wanted to bring up one last time.
- 29:07You know, pretty damn amazing. And you know, surely one of the
- 29:13biggest bands right now in modern heavy music.
- 29:17You want to call it all heavy metal?
- 29:18You want to cut a pumpkin metal all under one big congealed
- 29:23horrific jello mold with fruit in it from the 70s?
- 29:27Sure. No shade on U-turn style.
- 29:30I just don't think the Grammys should be giving bands that are
- 29:34not actually metal a metal award when there's only one left.
- 29:38I will be back in about 17 hours here on the channel.

- 30:11come on this and more and and all the drama of the week in
- 30:15rocket metal later today. Thank you.
- 30:20CBE Hood TV. What's up, brother?
- 30:22Good to see you peace out. Grammys do better or don't do
- 30:26any. You know, might as well like it
- 30:28better when they didn't have any metal at all on the show and
- 30:31then at least I felt better. But all right, I'm out.
- 30:33Peace.
