- 0:00Hey y'all, happy Friday. We made it to the end of another
- 0:05week and I'm so happy that y'all are joining me today.
- 0:08This is friendly on In the Stillness podcast and I just
- 0:12want to ask you guys right off the bat a question.
- 0:17If love is the evidence of a transformed life, what is your
- 0:22life currently proving or communicating?
- 0:26Because love is one of those most talked about, redefined
- 0:30words in our culture. Everyone seems to have their own
- 0:34version of it, but today we are really anchoring ourselves in
- 0:39the Word of God and what it says about love.
- 0:43Because love is not just a feeling, it's an action and it
- 0:47is self sacrificial. So we are going to be reading in
- 0:52first John chapter 3 through verses 11 to 15 today.
- 0:58The beautiful message you've heard right from the start is
- 1:02that we should walk in self sacrificing love toward one
- 1:05another. We should not be like Cain who
- 1:09yielded to the evil 1 and brutally murdered his own
- 1:13brother Abel. And why did he murder him?
- 1:17Because his own actions were evil and his brother's
- 1:20righteous. So don't be shocked, beloved, if
- 1:25you experience the world's hatred.
- 1:27Yet we can be assured that we have been translated from
- 1:31spiritual death into spiritual life because we love the family
- 1:36of believers. A loveless life remains
- 1:40spiritually dead. Everyone who keeps hating A
- 1:44fellow believer is a murderer, and you know that no murderer
- 1:49has eternal life living within. OK, I want to harp on this one
- 1:56line. A loveless life remains
- 1:59spiritually dead. So not struggling, not just
- 2:03working on it, it's dead. And love, according to the
- 2:08Bible, is a giving of oneself. In First Corinthians chapter 13,
- 2:14it is super clear cut that you can do all the right things, say
- 2:19all the right things, but without love, you're just noise.
- 2:24So let me ask you guys, are your actions truly rooted in love or
- 2:30is it just your intention? I want to go to Genesis 4 and
- 2:36talk about Cain and Abel really quick because obviously it
- 2:40addresses that here. Basically what happens is Cain
- 2:44kills Abel, his brother, because the Lord accepted Abel's
- 2:49offering and not his own. Why?
- 2:54Because Abel gave God his best, but Cain did not.
- 2:59And it was Abel's obedience that exposed Cain's compromise, his
- 3:04half heartedness. And instead of letting the
- 3:07conviction move him into repentance, he actually let it
- 3:12turn into resentment. And if we're honest, are there
- 3:17times when we can do the same thing where we just sit in the
- 3:22bitterness or in the resentment? Cain did not just feel anger, he
- 3:29agreed with it. He partnered with anger, and
- 3:32eventually he acted on it. There's a progression, anger
- 3:38being the emotion, rage whenever you bring in a tool that can be
- 3:43destructive, and then wrath. That is what actually happens
- 3:47when it turns into an action. And the Bible says in Ephesians
- 3:534 verse 26, in your anger do not sin.
- 3:58Cain did not follow that though because he let his feeling
- 4:02become action and that action was submission to the enemy.
- 4:07So I just want to ask, is there anything that you are coming
- 4:11into agreement with that is not from the Lord, that is not pure
- 4:15hearted or righteous? When you feel jealousy or
- 4:20offense and anger rising, are you taking it directly to God or
- 4:25are you actually letting it lead you?
- 4:28Because even though it is cliche, actions do speak louder
- 4:32than words. And here's another truth that we
- 4:36don't always like to think about.
- 4:39If you're actually living for Jesus, people are going to
- 4:43dislike you. Jesus says in John 15 verse 18
- 4:48that the world will hate you because it hated Him first.
- 4:53Because ultimately, righteous living exposes what is not
- 4:58righteous. So ask yourself, am I living for
- 5:03God and God alone, or am I living for the approval of
- 5:08others? Galatians one verse 10 says if
- 5:12we're trying to please people, we cannot be servants of Christ.
- 5:17So you cannot be deeply used by God and deeply committed to
- 5:22being liked by people simultaneously.
- 5:25At some point, you're going to hit a crossroads and you're
- 5:29going to have to pick. Now let's bring it back to love
- 5:34because love is the evidence of a changed life.
- 5:38Again, the verse that says a loveless life remains
- 5:43spiritually dead. So how do we grow in this?
- 5:47Well, First Thessalonians 3 verse 12 shows Paul praying for
- 5:52the church that our love would increase in overflow, and that
- 5:57should be our prayer too. So practically ask yourself, is
- 6:02my love increasing or is it just staying comfortable?
- 6:07Is it out of baseline? Your love is not just being kind
- 6:13when it's easy. It's choosing people when it's
- 6:18costly, when it's inconvenient or uncomfortable.
- 6:22And that's exactly why it looks like Jesus, because he loved
- 6:27radically. It was so opposite of what the
- 6:32world knew. And here's a gut check I'm
- 6:36sitting with. And what us to all hear.
- 6:39If someone looked at your life, your words, your responses, even
- 6:45your private thoughts, would they conclude that you're marked
- 6:49by love? Or is it that you just believe
- 6:52in it? So what does this look like in
- 6:56the real world? Well, it looks like serving,
- 7:00encouraging, praying for people, praying over people, rejoicing
- 7:06with them, even mourning with them, and honestly just being
- 7:10present, doing things out of love, because without love, your
- 7:17actions are empty. So a question that I'm sitting
- 7:22with is, how am I loving the family of God right now?
- 7:27We can make it simple. A lot of the times on my morning
- 7:31prayer walks, I'll ask the Lord to put someone on my heart to
- 7:36reach out to that day, to text them encouragement, or maybe to
- 7:40call someone, check in and see how they're doing, how you can
- 7:43be praying for them. Speak life over people, notice
- 7:48people more. That is the essence of love.
- 7:53And Christianity is a religion of the heart.
- 7:57Jesus says in Matthew 5 verse 21 that hatred in your heart is
- 8:02equivalent to murder because the truth is thoughts initiate and
- 8:09wrong desires lead to wrong actions.
- 8:14Hebrews 12 verse 15 warns us that if you have a bitter root,
- 8:18that is super dangerous because if you let it just sit there, it
- 8:22grows. So is there anything in your
- 8:26heart that does not reflect the pure love of God?
- 8:32And if there is, pray about it. Ask the Lord to soften your
- 8:37heart and to make you look more like His Son.
- 8:42Here's the beauty of it all. Self sacrificial love is so
- 8:46opposite of our human nature that when we live it out
- 8:50authentically, it points straight to Jesus.
- 8:55Love is a fruit of the Spirit for a reason.
- 8:58It fuels everything. So don't limit it.
- 9:02Don't keep your love safeguarded.
- 9:06Stop loving people at a level that just feels comfortable.
- 9:11My encouragement is to ask God to stretch you to love when it's
- 9:15inconvenient to give, when it's costly to see people the way
- 9:20that he sees them. Because at the end of the day,
- 9:25love is not optional in the Kingdom of God.
- 9:28It's the evidence that you've actually been transformed.
- 9:32So let's go ahead and closeout in prayer.
- 9:37Jesus, thank you for showing us what true, real love looks like,
- 9:45not just in words, but in action in your life.
- 9:51God, I pray that you would search our hearts.
- 9:54Know us. If there is anything in us that
- 9:57is not reflecting Your love, I pray that you would remove it.
- 10:02Cleanse us. Would you teach us to bring our
- 10:05emotions to You instead of acting on them?
- 10:09Help us to not partner with what's not from You.
- 10:11Lord, I pray that our love for You would overflow and that our
- 10:17love for others would abound. Would You make us people who
- 10:22love so boldly and selflessly and consistently take us beyond
- 10:28what is comfortable? May our lives reflect you in a
- 10:32way that draws others in so that they can see the person of Jesus
- 10:37through us. We give our hearts to you today
- 10:40God, and we pray this in Jesus holy name, Amen.
- 10:46OK y'all, well that's today's episode.
- 10:48I hope you all have a great rest of your Friday.
- 10:50Enjoy the weekend and I will see y'all on the next one.
