- 0:00First Yukon Hockey Coaches Show of twenty twenty four comes to you on a Monday
- 0:05night from Bear Smokeow's Barbecue downtown Hartford. Bob Joyce, Adam Jardino, my
- 0:10broadcast sidekick, and Mike Cavanaugh, the head coach of you con men's ice
- 0:15hockey, with you for the next hour. We'll hear from Joey Muldowney and
- 0:18Jake Percival, two guys that have been playing pretty well lately. Percival's on
- 0:23a hot streak five game in a row. He's got at least a point
- 0:26four game goal streak, and Joey Muldowney, who plays with Ryan Taddle and
- 0:30Tristan Fraser, got his first goal of his career on Friday in the three
- 0:34to three tie up at U Mass Michael, Happy New Year, Happy New
- 0:37Year, Bob, Adam, nice to be back, Thank you very much.
- 0:41So went over Harvard the tie in against UMass in the shootout where you
- 0:46get the extra point. Pretty good start to the second half. Yeah,
- 0:49it was. I thought we played really well against Harvord. You know,
- 0:54we kind of caught them. They played at Princeton the night before. But
- 1:00it was good, you know, we had four practices when we got back,
- 1:03and I thought we played really well. We took some penalties in the
- 1:07third that weren't great that kind of let them hang around a little bit.
- 1:12Otherwise I thought we were in full, you know, control and command of
- 1:18the game. And then the UMass game was just a back and forth game.
- 1:21It's always tough, especially up in that building. It's the only rink
- 1:25that's, you know, Olympic. Now I think New Hampshire's made theirs a
- 1:30lot smaller, so it's really the only true Olympic rink in the league.
- 1:34And it does pose some problems when you're not used to playing in it as
- 1:40far as for checking and sometimes defensive zone coverage. But overall, I was
- 1:44pretty happy with the way we played that game. Again, Harvard, you
- 1:48get the goal forty seconds in, you're off and running. It's one nothing
- 1:51after a period, and really you controlled that that twenty minutes. But then
- 1:56Harvard scores a power play early in the second period, and like you said,
- 1:59it was a one goal game midway through the third. So the way
- 2:02things had gone this year, I think there had been some results where you
- 2:06thought, man, we played well, but we didn't get the results so
- 2:07how did you make sure that the guys got the result on a night where
- 2:12they should have gotten a victory. Well, the second period, when they
- 2:15tied the game up on the power play, it was a great shot,
- 2:17but we came right back and scored two goals, so you know, we
- 2:23continue to play really well. So it was, you know, three to
- 2:24one game, and then when they made it three to two, we still
- 2:28were playing pretty well and then we got the empty ntter. But that game
- 2:32I felt, you know, for the first two periods we were rolling four
- 2:38lines and we were in a great rhythm as a team. And then the
- 2:42third period when we started taking penalties, not everybody's playing and you lose that
- 2:46rhythm, and that was kind of the key to that game. But you
- 2:51know, I don't think it ever really crept in that this is a game
- 2:55where you know, we could lose, you obviously in a one goal game,
- 3:01and so we still felt that we're pretty much control of that game.
- 3:05Yeah, only one power play for the Huskies in that game, and and
- 3:07Harvard had three h big excuse me, yeah, they did have three.
- 3:12Thomas Siny was off to a good start to begin the second half of the
- 3:15season. Four assists in his last two games, two in each night.
- 3:20Doing anything differently or just starting to see the puck going from him, He's
- 3:23just he's been really consistent. You know, He's been playing that way all
- 3:25year long and plays a lot of minutes for us. He's really the only
- 3:32underclassman who has you know, played you know, big minutes the last two
- 3:38years. So, you know, because you have the four seniors and then
- 3:43Jack Pascucci's been playing lately and been giving us you know, been playing pretty
- 3:46well. He played well against Harvard, played well against UMass, so that's
- 3:51been nice. But Tom's certainly got a lot of experience back there now after
- 3:55playing a year and a half, and he's doing a great job for us.
- 3:59Yeah, you talk about that defensive group where there was just kind of
- 4:03the one spot for him to try to wiggle his way in, he did
- 4:05last year and he grab hold of it. So looking ahead to next year
- 4:11with him leadership that kind of thing, he's going to be the elder statesman
- 4:15in a lot of ways in that group. So are you starting to see
- 4:17from him in ability to kind of take that mantle? Yeah, I think
- 4:21so. I think he will, you know, I mean, he's Still
- 4:26he's not really forced to do it now when you have Jake Flynn and Harrison
- 4:30Reese and Spetsy and Andrew Lucas. You know, like they've all played over
- 4:34one hundred games. So but he fits right in with those guys, and
- 4:40you know next year, yeah, he'll be counted on to, you know,
- 4:43be the leader back there. He is in in a luxury to have
- 4:46all your defensemen have been healthy and together all season long. Knock on wood,
- 4:48bum, knock on way. I've seen it. We've I've knocked on
- 4:51enough wood for the other team that I cover. You know that it doesn't
- 4:55seem to be worth it. You Gino's tried everything too, and it doesn't
- 4:59seem to help. What about the power play, whatever you liked about it.
- 5:01The first couple of games coming back, well, we only had one
- 5:04against Harvard, but it was pretty good. Uh, you know, we
- 5:08had some chances on it. And then the other night I think we had
- 5:13well one was nullified about fifteen seconds in. Uh, and then the second
- 5:17one was okay, we we had we had some things set up and we
- 5:21just didn't make the plays on that one. But the third was big.
- 5:27I mean, you know, it's two minutes and eighteen seconds left in the
- 5:30game, they take a high sticking penalty, and you know, you have
- 5:33to convert in those situations, and we did and it was it was good
- 5:38puck movement and we found the open guy in front of the net and gave
- 5:43us a chance. You know, well, we tied that game up and
- 5:45gave us a chance to win it in overtime. How do you get the
- 5:47game tign goal? And then Jake Flynn likes backhand. Oh, that was,
- 5:51yeah, it was although you had some chances, I understand in the
- 5:57overtime, we had a couple of Yeah, mal Downey had the it was
- 6:00like he and Tattle had a two on zero. But yeah, they had
- 6:04a couple of chances too. It wasn't like, you know, it went
- 6:08back and forth rewinding to that that goal at the end of regulation to tie
- 6:13it on the power play in a situation like that, do you have the
- 6:17looks on a power play that you you hold back in a in a critical
- 6:21situation where it's like, all right, you know, let's give them a
- 6:25different look that maybe they're not expecting it. Really Sometimes that wasn't that really
- 6:30that's such a well, yeah, I said it afterwards. That really wasn't
- 6:35the play we drew up, but I'm glad it worked, you know,
- 6:38so houtt he just made a good read. He was a hockey player and
- 6:42he made a good read coming down on it. But yeah, there's sometimes
- 6:46that you're looking for a certain thing. Okay, let's look for Maddie's one
- 6:48timer. Let's look for Samu's one timer. Let's like Lucas giving Lucas a
- 6:54lane to get it down on the net from up top. So you do
- 6:57try to take what they give you, but also at the same time you
- 7:00want to dictate how they're going to kill the penalty as well. All Right,
- 7:02we'll come back later on. We'll visit with Jake Personval, Joey Muldowney
- 7:06our player interviews tonight, and of course a big weekend series right downtown with
- 7:12the main Black Bears coming their rank seventh in the country. We'll talk to
- 7:15cav about that series coming up as well. This is the Yukon Hockey Coaches
- 7:17Show, live from Bear Smokehouse Barbecue here on Learfield.
