- 0:03Speaker 1: I get everybody. I'm Dan Horden. Thanks for downloading The
- 0:06Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast. The one More Day addition as we
- 0:13Speaker 1: look ahead to the second and third rounds of the
- 0:15Speaker 1: NFL Draft and give you some names to look for
- 0:18Speaker 1: when the Bengals are on the clock. The Bengals Booth
- 0:21Speaker 1: Podcast is brought to you by pay Corps, proud to
- 0:23Speaker 1: be the Bengals official HR software provider, by Ulta Fiber
- 0:28Speaker 1: future proof Fiber Internet designed to elevate your home, business
- 0:31Speaker 1: and community to a new level, and by Kettering Health
- 0:35Speaker 1: the best Care for the best fans. Kettering Health is
- 0:38Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. This is going
- 0:42Speaker 1: to be a short podcast since the Bengals didn't have
- 0:44Speaker 1: a first round pick. I'll post longer episodes after day
- 0:48Speaker 1: two and after Day three where you'll hear from the
- 0:52Speaker 1: players the Bengals selected, as well as Cincinnati's coaches on
- 0:56Speaker 1: their side of the ball. And I'll also have something
- 0:59Speaker 1: you won't find on any other podcast is I'll talk
- 1:03Speaker 1: to Bengals scouts and get the inside story behind each selection.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Those episodes will be posted by the time you wake
- 1:10Speaker 1: up the next day. As for Round one, I think
- 1:14Speaker 1: many of us watched it with the same question in mind.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Who would have still been there at number ten if
- 1:19Speaker 1: the Bengals had not traded away the pick. As it
- 1:22Speaker 1: turns out, two of the four guys that many of
- 1:25Speaker 1: us have been fixated on for months were there. Caleb
- 1:29Speaker 1: Downs went number eleven to the Cowboys, who traded up
- 1:32Speaker 1: to get him. Shoot they might have moved up to
- 1:34Speaker 1: number nine to jump ahead of the Bengals if they
- 1:36Speaker 1: had to, And Rubin Bain went number fifteen to Tampa Bay.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm sure the Bengals would have been happy to have
- 1:43Speaker 1: either one, but I know this, they are thrilled to
- 1:46Speaker 1: have Dexter Lawrence. This team is ready to win now,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and Sexy Dexi improves their chances more than any other
- 1:54Speaker 1: player in this year's draft. So now we can look
- 1:57Speaker 1: ahead the rounds two and three to give you my
- 2:00Speaker 1: top five picks in order for each round and ad
- 2:04Speaker 1: a few guys that I don't expect to be there
- 2:06Speaker 1: when the Bengals are on the clock, but it would
- 2:09Speaker 1: change my thinking if they drop that far. Let's start
- 2:13Speaker 1: with the ninth pick in the second round, number forty
- 2:16Speaker 1: one overall, where my top choice is Texas Tech linebacker
- 2:20Speaker 1: Jacob Rodriguez the best defensive player in college football last
- 2:24Speaker 1: year when he finished number five in the Heisman Trophy race.
- 2:28Speaker 1: There's a website that combines the results of one hundred
- 2:32Speaker 1: and eighty expert big boards and more than thirteen hundred
- 2:36Speaker 1: mock drafts to produce a consensus big Board, an average,
- 2:40Speaker 1: if you will, of all the draft gurus out there.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Rodriguez is number forty one on the consensus board, so
- 2:48Speaker 1: it matches up exactly with where the Bengals are picking
- 2:51Speaker 1: in round two. Jacob is six to one, two thirty
- 2:54Speaker 1: and tested well at the Combine, but it's his game
- 2:56Speaker 1: tape and production that stands out to me. In the
- 3:00Speaker 1: last two seasons, he's had more than two hundred and
- 3:03Speaker 1: fifty tackles, six sacks, ten forced fumbles, and five interceptions.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And one of the things that jumps out on tape
- 3:11Speaker 1: is how quickly he reads and reacts against screen passes,
- 3:16Speaker 1: something the Bengals have struggled against in recent years. I
- 3:20Speaker 1: think last year's rookie linebackers Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight
- 3:23Speaker 1: still have a chance to be very good NFL players,
- 3:26Speaker 1: but this is classic best player available. I think Rodriguez
- 3:30Speaker 1: could be the NFL's defensive rookie of the year. My
- 3:34Speaker 1: second choice for that pick is Indiana quarterback de Angelo Ponds,
- 3:39Speaker 1: who is number fifty three on the Consentus board, so
- 3:43Speaker 1: you would think there's a very realistic chance he'll be
- 3:45Speaker 1: there at number forty one. Why because he's tiny roughly
- 3:50Speaker 1: five to eight one point eighty, but his four to
- 3:53Speaker 1: three speed and forty three and a half inch vertical
- 3:56Speaker 1: allow Ponds to be sticky in coverage and make plays.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He averaged nearly one pass deflection per game in three
- 4:04Speaker 1: college seasons and had seven interceptions. The Bengals have two
- 4:08Speaker 1: good outside corners in DJ Turner and Dax Hill, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: although he played on the outside at Indiana, Pond's profiles
- 4:16Speaker 1: is a great slot corner in the NFL, or he
- 4:19Speaker 1: could stay outside and Dax Hill could move back inside
- 4:23Speaker 1: for Cincinnati. No matter where Dangelo lines up, he would
- 4:27Speaker 1: add a disruptive playmaker to the Bengals secondary. My third
- 4:31Speaker 1: choice is Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood. He's number thirty three
- 4:35Speaker 1: on the consensus board and a lot of mock drafts
- 4:38Speaker 1: had him going late in Round one. That obviously didn't happen,
- 4:42Speaker 1: but it might be wishful thinking that he'll last until
- 4:45Speaker 1: the ninth pick of round two, but it doesn't hurt
- 4:49Speaker 1: to hope. Hood is a physical corner who excelled against
- 4:53Speaker 1: the best wide receivers in the SEC. He did not
- 4:56Speaker 1: play in the slot, so if he's the pick, Hill
- 5:00Speaker 1: would likely move inside. My fourth choice for pick number
- 5:04Speaker 1: forty one is Georgia linebacker CJ. Allen, who is number
- 5:08Speaker 1: thirty eight on the consensus board. Allan earned a starting
- 5:12Speaker 1: role as a true freshman at Georgia and played in
- 5:15Speaker 1: a pro style defense, moving around before the snap and
- 5:18Speaker 1: taking efficient path to the ball. He's well coached, very disruptive, and,
- 5:24Speaker 1: in the words of one draft analyst, a seek and
- 5:27Speaker 1: destroy linebacker. My preference is still Jacob Rodriguez, but if
- 5:31Speaker 1: he's gone and the Bengals one linebacker in round two,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I think CJ. Allen would be a great alternative. My
- 5:38Speaker 1: fifth choice is Illinois edge defender Gabe Akis, whose last
- 5:42Speaker 1: name begins with a silent jay. He's number fifty on
- 5:46Speaker 1: the consensus board, so again a very realistic possibility for
- 5:50Speaker 1: pick number forty one. One website describes Akis as a
- 5:55Speaker 1: hard charging power rusher who overwhelms opponents with his bull
- 5:59Speaker 1: run us and hits like he's made of cement. Sign
- 6:03Speaker 1: me up. Acus had eleven sacks and three force fumbles
- 6:07Speaker 1: last year, after having eight sacks and three force fumbles
- 6:10Speaker 1: the year before. The Bengals added edge rusher Boye Mafe
- 6:14Speaker 1: and free agency, but you can never have enough pass rushers,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and Achis would be a good addition in round two.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Before moving to round three, I'm going to toss out
- 6:24Speaker 1: two names that I expected to get picked in round
- 6:27Speaker 1: one who are still available heading to round two. First,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and it's a shocker. Tennessee cornerback Jermaud McCoy. He was
- 6:36Speaker 1: frequently mentioned as a strong possibility to wind up in
- 6:39Speaker 1: Cincinnati when the Bengals still had the tenth pick, and
- 6:43Speaker 1: he's still on the board after round one. McCoy missed
- 6:46Speaker 1: all of last year with a torn ACL, so the
- 6:48Speaker 1: knee is obviously still a concern. But he ran a
- 6:52Speaker 1: four to four at his pro day with a thirty
- 6:55Speaker 1: eight inch vertical so he looked fine. But there are
- 6:59Speaker 1: reports indicate that he might need another knee procedure not
- 7:03Speaker 1: related to the ACL. Then there's Toledo safety Emmanuel McNeil Warren,
- 7:09Speaker 1: who is number twenty six on the consensus board. Everybody's
- 7:13Speaker 1: looking for that Kyle Hamilton, Nick Eamon Worri movable chess
- 7:17Speaker 1: piece safety and McNeil Warren is that kind of player.
- 7:21Speaker 1: At six three two fifteen. He had nine forced fumbles
- 7:25Speaker 1: and four interceptions in his college career and again would
- 7:28Speaker 1: be a best player available selection at number forty one.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Before getting to my favorites for round three, here's a
- 7:35Speaker 1: quick reminder that the Bengals Booth podcast is brought to
- 7:38Speaker 1: you by pay Corps, proud to be the Bengals official
- 7:41Speaker 1: HR software provider, by Alta Fiber future Proof Fiber Internet
- 7:45Speaker 1: designed elevate your home, business and community to a new level,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and by Kettering Health the best care for the best fans.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Kettering Health is the official healthcare provider of the Bengals.
- 7:57Speaker 1: The Bengals have the eighth pick in round three, number
- 8:00Speaker 1: seventy two overall, so in an effort to be realistic,
- 8:05Speaker 1: my top five choices for this round are all listed
- 8:08Speaker 1: at number sixty or lower on the consensus big Board.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'm only going to consider this as one player, but
- 8:16Speaker 1: I would happily take any one of three centers Jake
- 8:20Speaker 1: Slaughter of Florida, Connor lou of Auburn, and Sam hect
- 8:25Speaker 1: of Kansas State. They're all between number seventy four and
- 8:28Speaker 1: number ninety six on the consensus board, and there's a
- 8:31Speaker 1: decent chance the Bengals could get one of those guys
- 8:34Speaker 1: in the fourth round. But if they have a third
- 8:38Speaker 1: round grade on any of the three, it would be
- 8:41Speaker 1: a great time to draft Ted Carris's backup and eventual replacement.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I trust oh line coach Scott Peters to put them
- 8:49Speaker 1: in the proper order on the Bengals draft board. My
- 8:52Speaker 1: choice in the third round could also depend on who
- 8:54Speaker 1: they picked in the second. If it wasn't a cornerback,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I like Dalen Everett, year starter at Georgia with four
- 9:01Speaker 1: to three speed, or Chandler Rivers of Duke, who started
- 9:05Speaker 1: for three and a half years for the Blue Devils.
- 9:07Speaker 1: If the Bengals took a corner in the second round,
- 9:10Speaker 1: then I like Missouri linebacker Josiah Trotter in round three,
- 9:14Speaker 1: who reportedly had a top thirty visit to Cincinnati. He's
- 9:18Speaker 1: number sixty one on the consensus board and is the
- 9:21Speaker 1: son of former Pro Bowl linebacker Jeremiah Trotter. Finally, there's
- 9:26Speaker 1: an edge rusher to consider with a seventy second pick
- 9:29Speaker 1: who's number sixty on the consensus board, Derreck Moore of Michigan,
- 9:33Speaker 1: who led the Wolverines and tackles for loss, sacks and
- 9:37Speaker 1: forced fumbles last year and had one of the highest
- 9:40Speaker 1: pass rush win rates in college football. I'll throw in
- 9:44Speaker 1: a couple of names who probably won't be there in
- 9:47Speaker 1: the third round but would jump to the top of
- 9:49Speaker 1: my list if they are Arizona cornerback Trade and Stukes,
- 9:54Speaker 1: who's number fifty two on the consensus board, and University
- 9:58Speaker 1: of Cincinnati linebacker Jake Golden, who's number fifty eight. Stukes
- 10:02Speaker 1: ran a four to three forty and would immediately compete
- 10:06Speaker 1: for the starting job at nickel corner. And he still
- 10:09Speaker 1: might be there at number seventy two because some teams
- 10:12Speaker 1: will be turned off by his age. He'll turn twenty
- 10:14Speaker 1: five early in the season. Of all the linebackers I've mentioned,
- 10:19Speaker 1: gold Day is the freakiest athlete, which is why I
- 10:22Speaker 1: don't expect him to be there in round three. But
- 10:24Speaker 1: if he is, he would be a tremendous edition. I
- 10:28Speaker 1: watched every one of his games over the last two years,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and Golday seemed to get better every week. And he's
- 10:34Speaker 1: got a great personality you see strength. Coach once described
- 10:38Speaker 1: him to me as quote, a human being version of
- 10:42Speaker 1: a Labrador retriever and the best person you could ever
- 10:45Speaker 1: talk to. His humility and willingness to work is second
- 10:49Speaker 1: to none. End of quote. I'd love to see Jake
- 10:52Speaker 1: Golday stay in Cincinnati and suit up for the Bengals.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Don't forget tomorrow. After day two, I'll post a new
- 10:59Speaker 1: Apple episode where you'll hear from the Bengals draft picks,
- 11:03Speaker 1: members of the coaching staff, and a Bengals scout that's
- 11:07Speaker 1: going to do it for This episode of the Bengals
