Latest / Xenomania / Train to Busan Perfected the Zombie Movie - Xenomania 87
Transcript
- 0:00Jon: This week on Xenomania, a seemingly innocent trip by a father and daughter
- 0:06to bring the youngster to her mother for her birthday goes off the rails.
- 0:11Their train is soon overrun by zombies who rip through the passengers.
- 0:16Even worse, the threat is not confined to the zombies.
- 0:21In true zombie movie fashion, the other passengers are just as
- 0:26dangerous, with the only safe haven being the terminus of the train.
- 0:33All aboard.
- 0:34This is Train to Busan.
- 0:37This is Xenomania
- 0:55You know, 15% lobster
- 0:59Kearns: John just got back from the great state of Maine, everybody
- 1:03Ryan: How much percentage is butter?
- 1:06Jon: I didn't do a lot of butter.
- 1:08Kearns: Now,
- 1:09Ryan: man.
- 1:09Kearns: I was
- 1:09Jon: Oh, man.
- 1:10I, I had,
- 1:11Ryan: it
- 1:12Jon: I had this linguine marinara with lobster in it.
- 1:15Oh, man.
- 1:17Ryan: But it
- 1:18Jon: I'd go back just for that.
- 1:19Ryan: source
- 1:20Jon: I'd just go back, I'd go back just for that
- 1:23Kearns: Yeah, it sounds phenomenal.
- 1:24Which restaurant?
- 1:25Well, we'll talk about that later.
- 1:27But all right, everybody, this week we're doing Train to Busan.
- 1:32I was hyped for this movie to see it again
- 1:34Jon: Yeah, it's been a while since I saw this one
- 1:38Ryan: First watch
- 1:39Kearns: First watch for Ryan, and I'm sure we'll find out
- 1:41what he thought in his rating
- 1:44Ryan: It, you know, it me wanna buy it because I watched it,
- 1:47uh, for free on the Vizio thing.
- 1:50They had like different sections, but it through like the
- 1:5410-minute commercials was rough
- 1:56Kearns: Oh yeah, thanks
- 1:57Ryan: you get, oh, you get to a moment.
- 1:59It felt like I was watching it on basic cable all over again.
- 2:02You get to that moment, you're hyped, and then it's like,
- 2:05gotta donate to the ASPCA."
- 2:07And
- 2:07Kearns: Y-
- 2:07Ryan: "Oh, come
- 2:08Kearns: 10 minutes
- 2:09Jon: Did that, that Sarah, that Sarah McLachlan song
- 2:12comes on in the middle of it
- 2:15Kearns: of an angel
- 2:15Ryan: It's… No, they didn't.
- 2:16It's got the, um, the guy from Will & Grace.
- 2:19Well,
- 2:19Jon: Oh,
- 2:20Ryan: he's doing
- 2:20Kearns: Yeah,
- 2:21Jon: now?
- 2:21Geez
- 2:22Kearns: flamboyant fun guy is now being somber and serious
- 2:26as the ASPCA spokesperson.
- 2:28It's really, really tough transition for me
- 2:31Ryan: But it's like 10 minutes of it, and then you go back to zombie goodness.
- 2:34It just doesn't add up
- 2:36Kearns: Yeah, it's tough.
- 2:38I agree
- 2:39Jon: I, I bought this on 4K just for this viewing.
- 2:43Kearns: I mean, I appreciated that
- 2:45Jon: No.
- 2:46Kearns: well
- 2:47Ryan: Oh, the steelbook's like 20 bucks right now.
- 2:49Oh.
- 2:50All
- 2:50Kearns: Thar she blows, gentlemen
- 2:52Ryan: feel left out right now.
- 2:53I gotta get my copy
- 2:54Kearns: cool.
- 2:55I tried to watch the extras and stuff, and it's, it's neat, but
- 2:58it's nothing groundbreaking.
- 3:00You
- 3:00Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:01Kearns: about this one I forgot about DVDs is this one has about a solid
- 3:04eight minutes of previews you can't skip
- 3:06Jon: I love previews.
- 3:08I love previews.
- 3:09Kearns: skip them.
- 3:10It doesn't let you skip
- 3:11Jon: Mm-hmm
- 3:12Kearns: At least maybe if you have the right remote control on a DVD
- 3:14player, you can hit the menu button.
- 3:17But I used the PS5, so it's just like
- 3:20Ryan: skip it.
- 3:21Kearns: I did everything.
- 3:22Ryan: R
- 3:22Kearns: I did it all.
- 3:23Yeah.
- 3:24It, it was like, "Nah, buddy, this is for you. You're gonna
- 3:27watch this." It was pretty cool
- 3:29Ryan: like I had that vibe today, uh, for one of the Arrow releases and it
- 3:34came up with the Arrow logo and I'm like, "Oh man, this is gonna be a while."
- 3:37But it was like cool and nostalgic.
- 3:39But then when the warnings came up, I was able to skip it.
- 3:42I was like, "Thank you.
- 3:43I don't, I don't need to be warned about the
- 3:45Jon: And y-
- 3:45Ryan: anymore."
- 3:46Jon: you found a disc you can skip the FBI warning?
- 3:48That's usually the one you can't skip
- 3:51Kearns: that's always the one that, that locks you out.
- 3:53You're cuckolded into that one.
- 3:56Ryan: I just, just keep clicking,
- 3:59Jon: this function is not available at this time
- 4:02Kearns: exactly.
- 4:03That's the way.
- 4:04So this is an, a horror movie that I didn't know how it was gonna go
- 4:07the first time I watched it, and I really didn't know much about it
- 4:10the first time I watched it either.
- 4:11but it takes place almost entirely in an enclosed s- space on a train.
- 4:18and that's always, like, kinda tough 'cause you don't
- 4:23know if the movie's gonna…
- 4:24Like, uh, Iron Lung,
- 4:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:26Kearns: I, I did not like Iron Lung at all.
- 4:30It's in, all in that one space.
- 4:32I like what they tried to do with Iron Lung, and I liked, uh, a couple of
- 4:36things about Iron Lung, but the actual movie itself was, like, a dud for me,
- 4:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:40Mm-hmm.
- 4:41Kearns: because it was all, it took place in a locker room, basically.
- 4:44It was like, "Cool. This is fun. We're looking at the same gray walls."
- 4:49Ryan: it's all focused on one person the entire movie, or does it do
- 4:52Kearns: Yes.
- 4:53Ryan: other
- 4:53Kearns: No.
- 4:54Ryan: so that's
- 4:55Kearns: He's in an iron lung submersible talking to presumably
- 5:00like, on the surface or something.
- 5:02But that's part of the twist, so we're not gonna get into that.
- 5:04But that's, like, kind of why I was worried about this, and I,
- 5:07I… This movie holds up so well considering the train issue.
- 5:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:12Kearns: And
- 5:12Jon: Well, because, yeah, the thing with Iron Lung it sounds like it's
- 5:16not just the small environment, it's the small cast also.
- 5:21Like, when it is something like Iron Lung, you really have to
- 5:24get into that character, I think
- 5:27Kearns: Yep
- 5:28Ryan: It's also the process of time.
- 5:30How long was the movie?
- 5:31Like an hour and a half
- 5:32Kearns: Iron long, I don't even remember.
- 5:33It was a slog.
- 5:35Could've been three hours, could've been 15 minutes.
- 5:37I was just, like, grinding through it
- 5:40Ryan: But that's the thing, like the ideal time for something like
- 5:42that is like 30 minutes, right?
- 5:44For like Alfred Hitchcock Presents back in the '60s for
- 5:47Kearns: It would've been a perfect length.
- 5:4930 minutes Alfred Hitchcock, perfect
- 5:53Ryan: Yeah.
- 5:53Well, that's how he did it with the, one of the episodes where they bury
- 5:55someone alive, which they remade into a R- Ryan Reynolds movie years later.
- 6:00Kearns: know
- 6:00Ryan: that worked.
- 6:01Yeah, they, it worked because you get him in the grave, but you also
- 6:05see other scenes of people trying to figure out what's going on.
- 6:08So it cuts it up a lot.
- 6:10think that one was like 82 minutes, so you, you can't really go a long time with
- 6:14those films 'cause they get, they get dull
- 6:17Kearns: Yeah, they get a little dull.
- 6:19'Tis true
- 6:21Jon: Yeah.
- 6:22You got…
- 6:23Ryan: though
- 6:23Jon: No, Train to Busan never slows down.
- 6:26It never gets boring.
- 6:28And I would recommend if you're watching it for the first time, do not get attached
- 6:34Ryan: No.
- 6:35Kearns: Yeah, there's a lot of characters in this that I liked
- 6:38that aren't at the end of the movie.
- 6:41Ryan: Which one stands out?
- 6:43Kearns: Oh, man.
- 6:44It's gotta be, uh, Sang-Hwa.
- 6:47Muscles McKin- M- What is it?
- 6:49Muscles McKenzie?
- 6:50Jon: Yeah, he, yeah, he's really cool.
- 6:54Kearns: Well, he's the only hero really in the movie besides the
- 6:58anti-hero, hero, hero Seok-woo, the main
- 7:01Jon: Mm-hmm
- 7:03Kearns: And, uh, yeah, guys, these are Korean names, and
- 7:05we're doing our best, all right?
- 7:06So if you're gonna send the hate mail, send it to…
- 7:07We'll put Ryan's address in the description.
- 7:09You can
- 7:09Jon: Yeah.
- 7:10Kearns: to Ryan.
- 7:10He's gonna handle all that.
- 7:12Ryan: Yep, I got you.
- 7:13Jon: Yep
- 7:14Kearns: probably send you, like, a nice le- letter back handwritten, spritz
- 7:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:18Kearns: of perfume on it.
- 7:20Ryan: in Script
- 7:20Kearns: such a nice guy.
- 7:22yeah,
- 7:22Jon: No, I don't…
- 7:23Kearns: Sang-ho movie
- 7:27Jon: Yeah
- 7:28Ryan: know, I'm a lot with, um, because we've gotten into, like, I feel
- 7:32like I've gotten more into a foreign movie kick since Pan's Labyrinth.
- 7:36Uh, we talked about Cronos, uh, Last Train, or Train to
- 7:39Busan, I wanna say Last Train.
- 7:41I feel like a lot of the foreign horror films go that extra mile with the
- 7:46thrill and, like, the suspense while carrying a story, and I feel like here
- 7:51in America we're finally getting back to that movies like Obsession and stuff.
- 7:56I- it's a big shout-out, what I'm saying, but I feel like seeing a
- 7:59lot of those films, like, they take, they're able to take that extra step
- 8:03Kearns: Well, the, these style movies are being scooped up by streaming networks.
- 8:08I know, I remember when Netflix really started pulling in the
- 8:11Korean films and shows, and you
- 8:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:17Kearns: But, Amazon Prime was the first one that had Trollhunter and Monsters.
- 8:21That's how I consume those.
- 8:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:24Kearns: isn't a foreign movie, but Trollhunter was.
- 8:26and then Sweet Home was on Netflix.
- 8:29That's Korean.
- 8:30And they started exploding and these things, like, started to get bigger.
- 8:33Squid Games, obviously, during the pandemic
- 8:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:35Kearns: a, a huge success.
- 8:37So like, they need content, and they decided to, you know, scoop
- 8:41it in from here because they're… The Koreans especially are
- 8:44producing some high-quality stuff.
- 8:46Like, know if you guys saw, The Host
- 8:50Jon: Uh, sea, the sea creature one?
- 8:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:54Jon: Yeah.
- 8:55Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:55The
- 8:56Jon: I love that movie
- 8:57Kearns: big surprise.
- 8:58There was a crummy book that had come out around that time called The Host by
- 9:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:05Kearns: I was wrong.
- 9:07Jon: I'm very wrong.
- 9:09Kearns: Yeah, Host, the movie's great.
- 9:11Jon: Yeah
- 9:12Kearns: but like, yeah, that just kinda goes to show, you know,
- 9:14what these directors are up to.
- 9:16And, I don't know what else he's produced.
- 9:18I know he has a show on Netflix right now called Hellbound
- 9:21Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:22Ryan: Okay.
- 9:24which was the sequel, and I think he did an anime prequel
- 9:27Jon: Yes.
- 9:28Seoul, Seoul Station is an anime, anime prequel.
- 9:32Kearns: I did not
- 9:32Jon: Prequel or, um, I don't even know.
- 9:36It's, it's labeled as a prequel, but it's sort of at the same time
- 9:42as the very beginning of the movie, like when Seong is home with his
- 9:48daughter, Soo-an, and, and that.
- 9:50Like, it's happening then, and then it rolls into Train to
- 9:54Busan with the, the homeless guy
- 9:58Kearns: Ah, neat.
- 9:58Okay.
- 9:59Ryan: That's pretty
- 10:00Jon: Yeah, so that's, that's where it ties in.
- 10:02I, I think I like the story, but y- I think you guys know my… I'm not big on
- 10:08the anime thing, so it sort of missed me.
- 10:11The story itself is fantastic
- 10:13Kearns: I'm the biggest weeb in the world, so it's kind of funny that John and I
- 10:17are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
- 10:19I feel like
- 10:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:21Ryan: I was gonna say, I'm like, I'm like Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, the
- 10:24Kearns: That's a good place to be.
- 10:26Like, I'm like Ninja Scroll at 11 guy, where it was like, "Hmm, are
- 10:31they allowed to show that just 'cause it's animated?" kinda stuff.
- 10:35In the '90s when they were just trying things out, that was fun, and then I've
- 10:38Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:39Kearns: ever since.
- 10:40But, I mean, so S- Yeon Sang-ho is definitely talented,
- 10:44but I don't know if he…
- 10:45If this is gonna be his, his Sixth Sense.
- 10:49I don't know if this is gonna… It's g- tough to beat this movie
- 10:52Jon: It's gonna be really hard.
- 10:53I'm curious about Colony.
- 10:55I've seen the trailers for it.
- 10:56It looks like it's back to his Train to Busan form.
- 11:03But I, I guess that remains to be seen.
- 11:06it's another, zombie type of movie.
- 11:10But like I, I, I mean, the, the couple of things I've seen I've enjoyed.
- 11:13I, I liked Peninsula.
- 11:15It's not Train to Busan.
- 11:18Which, you know, it was always gonna struggle to live up to that.
- 11:22Anything would
- 11:23Kearns: When you perfect or when you come out with something that just nails it,
- 11:26like Train to Busan does, and then you try to make something similar or with the same
- 11:31equation, I suppose, like M. Night did,
- 11:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:36Kearns: Everything has the twist and stuff, and everything
- 11:39is just awful in comparison to
- 11:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:42Mm-hmm.
- 11:44Kearns: Peninsula just like a totally different style of movie?
- 11:50Jon: It's m- it sinks more into the action and it's like, it's pure post-apocalyptic.
- 11:56Like it's, I think it's years after the events of Train to Busan
- 12:02Kearns: So it's like Cormac McCarthy, The Road kinda.
- 12:06Did you
- 12:07Jon: Kind of.
- 12:08I did, yeah.
- 12:09I ki- one of the few McCarthy books I read, but yeah, I r- I read The Road.
- 12:14I watched the movie also.
- 12:15It's okay.
- 12:17Kearns: I gotta talk to you about McCarthy later.
- 12:20We can have a chat
- 12:21Jon: Um, I would say Peninsula ro- rolls in a whole bunch of ideas.
- 12:28It's got some, some kinda like that Fast and the Furious goofiness
- 12:33to it, like very similar ways.
- 12:36it definitely sinks more into the action than the horror
- 12:41Kearns: Okay.
- 12:42I prefer the horror, um, considering what he did with
- 12:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 12:47Kearns: it scary, but I
- 12:49Jon: No.
- 12:51Mm-hmm.
- 12:51Ryan: Yep
- 12:51Kearns: like, it-- this is an action horror movie for sure, if
- 12:54we were gonna say that, if we're gonna mash it with another genre.
- 12:56Yeah.
- 12:57Jon: Yeah
- 12:58Kearns: But it's not… Like, World War Z is the one I keep thinking of because
- 13:03this movie and World War Z do something very similar with, like, the zombie piles
- 13:09when they all start mashing and then breaking through things at times and
- 13:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:12Kearns: World War Z does it way more
- 13:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:17With the, the like, sort of like ants using one another to climb up stuff.
- 13:23Yeah.
- 13:24Yeah.
- 13:24Then,
- 13:25Kearns: have moments like that
- 13:26Jon: mm-hmm, I, I particularly like the scenes in Train to Busan where
- 13:31they, they break through glass just by the sheer force and volume of them.
- 13:37Kearns: Yeah, that was cool.
- 13:39Jon: Yeah.
- 13:39Mm-hmm.
- 13:39Kearns: because of it.
- 13:40That was pretty sweet.
- 13:41Jon: Yeah.
- 13:42They, they-
- 13:42Kearns: like them holding onto helicopters and falling, and then chasing
- 13:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:46Kearns: at the skate park.
- 13:47That was pretty dumb, but funny
- 13:48Ryan: So that did happen with the helicopter.
- 13:50I was, I saw that and I was like, "Wait a minute. Did I just see
- 13:52someone just fall from the sky?"
- 13:54Kearns: Yeah, there were like zombies raining down on these kids.
- 13:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 13:57Kearns: it was pretty funny.
- 13:58Ryan: chicken, I was waiting for a chicken
- 14:00Kearns: But they,
- 14:00Ryan: like, "This ain't Zombiology."
- 14:02Kearns: also do something where they, they have the shambling zombie effect
- 14:06as well, and they, they, they do that a little bit where it's like unexplained,
- 14:10where you just see them moving a little bit more slowly until they
- 14:12trigger and then kind of run at them.
- 14:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:19Kearns: the lights perfectly.
- 14:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:25Kearns: which is kinda cool.
- 14:27Jon: Yeah
- 14:28Kearns: gave them the shambling zombie effect again a little bit,
- 14:30where they were kinda moving around slow, and then our hero cast had to
- 14:33navigate their way through them at one
- 14:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:37Mm-hmm.
- 14:38The climbing on the luggage racks is pretty good.
- 14:41Kearns: Yeah,
- 14:42Jon: I was at, I like that visual
- 14:44Kearns: You got two minutes though, and you're putting yourself in a situation
- 14:46where you are highly vulnerable.
- 14:49Jon: Yep.
- 14:49Kearns: no shot.
- 14:51shot
- 14:52Ryan: I thought someone was gonna fall through because it was canvas.
- 14:54I thought the big guy or, um, Seo, Seo Gu would've went through,
- 15:00Jon: Mm-hmm
- 15:00Ryan: the homeless guy.
- 15:01Like, I was waiting for something like that to ha- happen.
- 15:04And that's the thing we were saying, like, it… You're on the edge
- 15:06of your seat for the whole thing, 'cause it's that claustrophobic.
- 15:10You know?
- 15:11Kearns: was the most New York way to say claustrophobic I've ever heard.
- 15:14Jon: Claustrophobic.
- 15:16Ryan: claustrophobic.
- 15:17Kearns: yeah.
- 15:17Jon: My claustrophobia is acting up tonight.
- 15:21Kearns: smear my bagel
- 15:23Ryan: phobia a schmear of
- 15:25Kearns: And Staten Island's so small, you know?
- 15:27It's claustrophobic
- 15:30Ryan: I've been watching a lot of videos about egg creams and like how
- 15:33they make the egg cream and all that.
- 15:35The guy's got a heavy Brooklyn accent.
- 15:38Kearns: he's adopting it
- 15:39Ryan: claustrophobic, but
- 15:41Kearns: would we classify these as fast zombies?
- 15:44Jon: Yeah,
- 15:45Kearns: Yeah,
- 15:46Jon: they're fast zombies.
- 15:47I,
- 15:48Ryan: Yes.
- 15:49Yeah.
- 15:50Jon: I,
- 15:50Ryan: have that weakness though
- 15:52Jon: mm-hmm
- 15:52Ryan: them go back, which is a nice twist, but I, I feel
- 15:56like I'm in the middle though.
- 15:58Kearns: Stuck in the middle with you
- 16:01Jon: I d- I'm pretty sure these were also Romero approved zombies.
- 16:06Kearns: Really?
- 16:07Jon: I believe he liked Train to Busan.
- 16:11Kearns: Then, then we have nothing else to say on the matter.
- 16:13The
- 16:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:13Kearns: spoken.
- 16:14Jon: Yeah
- 16:15Ryan: wanna see this real
- 16:16Kearns: Would we, would it be safe to say he invented the modern zombie?
- 16:19Jon: Romero?
- 16:20Absolutely.
- 16:21Kearns: good,
- 16:22Jon: Absolutely.
- 16:23Kearns: I wanted to
- 16:23Jon: Night of the Living Dead inv- invents the, the modern zombie and, you know, in
- 16:28the 60, almost 60 years since, there's been the evolutions, the World War Zs,
- 16:35the Train to Busans, 28 Days Laters.
- 16:38Kearns: Dawn of the Dead was the first fast
- 16:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:40Kearns: ever watched.
- 16:42Remake the remake.
- 16:43Jon: Yeah.
- 16:45Kearns: so what about the fact that… So this, this occurs due to
- 16:49some sort of environmental issue.
- 16:51We're gonna talk about that a bit later on, but
- 16:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 16:53Kearns: for now, how do you guys feel about how that affects the animals too?
- 16:57'Cause that opening scene was pretty sick
- 17:01Ryan: It's a twist.
- 17:02And you know what I thought immediately was Resident Evil and the dogs.
- 17:06Kearns: Oh, yeah, the T-virus
- 17:08Ryan: right?
- 17:09everything.
- 17:10And then I'm like,
- 17:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:11Ryan: that deer gets hit and it comes back, I'm like, "Oh, going a different
- 17:15avenue." And that, I feel like if he furthered that with a sequel instead
- 17:20of like Peninsula or go- continues in the franchise, he should look into that
- 17:24whole zombified animal prowess, 'cause that would be unique on that part.
- 17:28Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:30Kearns: Agreed
- 17:30Ryan: just brings a whole other level.
- 17:32Like, imagine just like a t- I mean, they did it in Army of the Dead,
- 17:35but the tiger or like a lion or like group of wolves zombified, like
- 17:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 17:42Yeah, they've done in a few things.
- 17:44the most recent thing I saw it in was Cold Storage.
- 17:48They did it with a deer and a cat, I think.
- 17:52Kearns: Yeah
- 17:52Jon: the, the CGI in that wasn't, you know, fully convincing, but I, like
- 17:59when they, add in that, like, more broad scale environmental disaster
- 18:04Kearns: it is kinda cool.
- 18:05they don't tell us what happened to cause it, which probably happens in the prequel.
- 18:09I'm looking up the year it was released.
- 18:11You guys probably already know
- 18:13Jon: Uh, I wanna say it's 16.
- 18:15Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say the CGI is pretty damn good for 2016
- 18:20Ryan: They mention what happens because, um, Seok-woo, he gets a
- 18:24call from his assistant 'cause I, I mean, he's a fund manager, but in
- 18:30cahoots with this government project
- 18:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 18:33Ryan: the environment and the gases and stuff.
- 18:34So I think whatever they did led to the
- 18:38Jon: Yeah, there, there's a,
- 18:40Ryan: or something
- 18:41Jon: there, there's a brief mess- uh, part about it being like a leak
- 18:46at a biotech firm that, Seok-woo was, working as- through somehow.
- 18:53Kearns: He
- 18:53Jon: I think he, I,
- 18:54Kearns: selling the
- 18:55Jon: yeah.
- 18:56I, I, yeah, I, I think to s- to some extent he's like stockbroker
- 19:00or hedge fund guy or something
- 19:02Kearns: They were like, "We need him to be a douche. Let's make him a stockbroker."
- 19:05Jon: But yeah, the most identical form of douche in the last 20 years
- 19:09Kearns: Yep.
- 19:11And without fail, come at us in the comment.
- 19:13Uh, come at me directly in the comments.
- 19:15I would love to slaughter you.
- 19:18Jon: I, I'm not, I'm not saying they all are, but it's the most
- 19:21identifiable way to… It's the easiest way to make somebody
- 19:26identifiable as a shady character,
- 19:29Kearns: Yeah,
- 19:30Jon: to ma- make him involved in stocks and trading and stuff
- 19:34Kearns: Yep.
- 19:35Ryan: And then on top of it, he's a bad dad.
- 19:37Kearns: He is a bad dad
- 19:38Ryan: know, I wanna ask,
- 19:40Jon: He's,
- 19:41Ryan: these… Oh, sorry
- 19:43Jon: he's a bad dad to an extent.
- 19:45I think he's, I think in his mind he's a good dad because he's providing for her.
- 19:53Ryan: Yes
- 19:55Jon: but I think he just views that from a dollars and cents perspective more than
- 20:01a I need to pay attention to my child and, you know, maybe not get her her,
- 20:06get her a game system that she already has from the last time, from the last
- 20:12time I had my assistant pick her gift
- 20:15Kearns: That was rough.
- 20:16Ryan: Wii
- 20:16Kearns: Yeah, that
- 20:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:18Kearns: because I was watching it and I was like, I mean, she's a
- 20:20rich kid and stuff, so she really wants for nothing in that regard.
- 20:24that is kind of a crappy feeling that he wouldn't know that he already got
- 20:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:29Mm-hmm.
- 20:31Ryan: I mean, it
- 20:32Jon: Yeah
- 20:32Ryan: when you saw it set up in the corner and I was like, "Oh, you get two copies
- 20:37Kearns: And she didn't even say anything.
- 20:39She just looked up at it like,
- 20:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:43Yeah.
- 20:44Kearns: So it's
- 20:44Jon: Yeah
- 20:46Kearns: Um, and that's a good time to point out the fact that she
- 20:48is a very good actress, Sue Ann.
- 20:50Um, she's now 10 years older than that, so she's probably 20
- 20:55Jon: She's, she's 20 now.
- 20:57Kearns: now.
- 20:57But she was, as a child actor, she was impressive
- 21:01Ryan: Yeah, she was really good
- 21:02Jon: when we're done, Google her
- 21:04Kearns: I don't want to.
- 21:06I don't want to.
- 21:07Because last time I did it, it, it turned out that the, the woman,
- 21:11the 22-year-old version of that actress was insanely attractive.
- 21:16Jon: Uh, well, yeah.
- 21:17Kearns: Yeah, it happened
- 21:18Jon: It'll happen again, yeah.
- 21:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 21:21So I was like, "Okay, neat." But it's
- 21:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 21:29Kearns: person
- 21:30Jon: No, no
- 21:32Kearns: definitely not.
- 21:34so yeah, I guess we're gonna keep ticking away at the bad dad part.
- 21:36so he's the… I don't know what we would call him actually.
- 21:39You two are smart.
- 21:39Is he an anti-hero?
- 21:42he, somebody who becomes heroic?
- 21:46Ryan: I feel like it's the hero's journey in a way.
- 21:50Like, he thinks he's doing right, and then he falls and, like, he's kinda like
- 21:55learning what's the best thing to do to help his daughter in this situation,
- 21:59the understanding of sacrifice and what he has to sacrifice for her and for
- 22:04himself in order to keep them alive.
- 22:07Kearns: And it really is about just her, him.
- 22:10All she wants is him,
- 22:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:12Kearns: when we get to the ending, that'll kinda hit home really
- 22:15hard, because that to me is
- 22:16Jon: Yeah.
- 22:16Kearns: effective part of the movie,
- 22:19Jon: Yeah.
- 22:20Kearns: that switch at the end of the movie is like, "Oh, bro." And
- 22:24that's really why I think the director is not gonna top this, 'cause he
- 22:28Jon: It's gon- it's gonna be so hard to top this.
- 22:31Like, it, it, I can't imagine, like, the first time you do something of,
- 22:36on this scale, it being this good, and knowing that someday you're
- 22:41g- gonna keep trying to, to repeat it, and maybe never hit it again
- 22:47Kearns: Yeah.
- 22:49It's tough
- 22:50Ryan: why he did Peninsula, 'cause it's more action, as you're saying.
- 22:55So it's like what John Carpenter did.
- 22:57He did, like, horror.
- 22:58Like, his first breakout was horror, and then he did, like, action,
- 23:01sci-fi, and he kinda mixed it up a bit to give it a little taste.
- 23:07You know?
- 23:07Jon: Yeah.
- 23:08Yeah, I can see that.
- 23:09But like, it, it's just, just so, so well done
- 23:14Kearns: Big time.
- 23:15It's insane how well done it is.
- 23:17Um, I said, I don't think he's ever gonna top it.
- 23:23But
- 23:23Jon: it's, it's gonna be tough
- 23:26Kearns: Let's, transition to a little gamey game, guys
- 23:30Jon: Yeah, let's do that.
- 23:30We have a, back to our traditional Stash or Slash this week.
- 23:35Ryan: Oh, man.
- 23:37Jon: I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna give you bonuses for guessing themes
- 23:40because if you both don't have the theme within two movies, I'm, I'll be ashamed
- 23:47Kearns: Oh boy.
- 23:49Ashamed
- 23:50Jon: I mean,
- 23:51Kearns: not
- 23:51Jon: ashamed of you.
- 23:52It's not all horror.
- 23:54Kearns: Okay.
- 23:55Jon: I have, I've mixed in, it's actually less horror than other movies.
- 24:00So I'll start here.
- 24:02Movie number one is Howl
- 24:07Kearns: Hmm.
- 24:08Howl.
- 24:10Howl you doing?
- 24:11Oh, is it movies that take place on a train?
- 24:13Jon: Sure is
- 24:14Kearns: Okay
- 24:15Ryan: Oh, you better have Silver Streak on here.
- 24:18Kearns: I'm sure he will.
- 24:20I'm sure he will, buddy
- 24:23Ryan: But how?
- 24:24Um, is it werewolf
- 24:25Jon: It is werewolves.
- 24:27Kearns: that
- 24:27Jon: I, I think,
- 24:28Kearns: the train, not
- 24:29Jon: I've, I figured you guys had not seen this, and I think I may add
- 24:34it to the calendar for next year.
- 24:36I really like this.
- 24:38It's a, you know, it's a pretty traditional werewolf story, but I
- 24:42think they did some cool stuff with it
- 24:44Kearns: Cool.
- 24:45I'm down, man.
- 24:46Ryan: interested,
- 24:47Kearns: I like seeing things of the type that I have not yet seen And,
- 24:52Ryan: Is it
- 24:52Kearns: we should just do like a whole month on just trains
- 24:56Jon: we should.
- 24:57Kearns: Just embrace the tism.
- 24:59Jon: We should.
- 25:00Kearns: after
- 25:01Jon: you not into trains?
- 25:03Kearns: Me?
- 25:04Ryan: Oh, I love trains.
- 25:05Jon: you not into trains?
- 25:08Kearns: Are you not entertained?
- 25:09I get it.
- 25:10I was gonna say, I used to work on the railroad, so
- 25:14Jon: the livelong day
- 25:16Kearns: about trains.
- 25:16We used to have FRNs, which, were people who would sit in lawn chairs on the side
- 25:22of the tracks and like take videos and pictures of the trains as they went by.
- 25:26And then
- 25:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:30Kearns: talk your ear off.
- 25:32And be like, "Did you see the engine 47 times that diesel that's coming
- 25:36through?" I was like, "Yeah, bye.
- 25:37I'm trying to make some money."
- 25:39Jon: Trying to do my job.
- 25:40Thanks
- 25:41Kearns: my job.
- 25:41I like them less than the dudes who would be found, like, stealing metal.
- 25:49Trains are a crazy place, man.
- 25:50Trains…
- 25:51Jon: Yeah, man.
- 25:52Kearns: on trains.
- 25:52So Howell is on a train
- 25:55Jon: Yep.
- 25:56So Ryan's slashing.
- 25:57What are you doing, Kearns?
- 25:58I would imagine I know, but
- 26:01Kearns: Uh, well, well, you would imagine you'd know
- 26:04Ryan: Oh, he, he feels like you're gonna slash it
- 26:06Jon: I mean, you haven't seen it.
- 26:08It's hard, it's hard to stash something you haven't seen.
- 26:11Kearns: That's a great cover or poster, but
- 26:14Jon: Mm-hmm
- 26:14Kearns: it I thought you were saying that because I was
- 26:16gonna do the opposite of Ryan
- 26:18Jon: No, no, no.
- 26:20All right, movie number two, Money Train
- 26:24Kearns: God, how do I slash this?
- 26:27Jon: We got, we got them back together.
- 26:29We got, we got the White Men Can't Jump cast back together,
- 26:32and this is what we did with it
- 26:34Kearns: Perez in it?
- 26:35Or is this--
- 26:36Ryan: uh, Jennifer
- 26:37Kearns: That's broke-ass Rosie Perez, uh, upgraded Rosie Perez,
- 26:40depending on how you look at it
- 26:43Ryan: Rosie Perez.
- 26:44Jon: Broken.
- 26:45I love Rosie Perez
- 26:47Kearns: an actress, just as a character actor, the… Well, she plays the same
- 26:50character, Rosie Perez, but still,
- 26:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:55I like, I love listening to her talk about boxing.
- 27:01Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:02As like an
- 27:02Jon: She's getting…
- 27:03Kearns: the
- 27:03Jon: Yeah, yeah, she loves boxing, and she's pretty knowledgeable
- 27:08Kearns: one.
- 27:08They cast Salma Hayek in the movie, uh, To the Bone or whatever, with Woody
- 27:13Harrelson and, uh, Antonio Banderas.
- 27:15They
- 27:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 27:16Kearns: in that too.
- 27:16What the hell?
- 27:17Jon: Yeah.
- 27:18You can't put her in enough stuff for me
- 27:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:22Ryan: Yeah, I agree
- 27:23Kearns: I f- I don't know what else you got coming, 'cause now we're, now it's
- 27:26like Speed 2 was on a train, wasn't it?
- 27:30Jon: No, speed two is cruise control.
- 27:32It was a cruise ship
- 27:33Kearns: Control.
- 27:34Ryan: And then
- 27:35Kearns: is a Steven Seagal movie on a train.
- 27:37Ryan: Under Siege
- 27:38Kearns: Under Siege 2 is on a train, and I'm gonna probably have to slash that.
- 27:44All right, I'm gonna keep, I'm gonna keep Money Train.
- 27:46I'm doing it.
- 27:48They don't make movies like this anymore, dude
- 27:51Jon: No
- 27:51Ryan: strengths in automobiles.
- 27:53He might have silver streak if he's not doing
- 27:55Kearns: But that's not like on a train.
- 27:56There's a train in it.
- 27:58Y-
- 27:58Ryan: It's in the title.
- 27:59Kearns: yeah.
- 28:00Ryan: chance.
- 28:02Kearns: I mean, if planes, trains, and automobiles, he'd probably put that
- 28:04last too because he's a savage like that
- 28:07Jon: So you're saying there's a chance
- 28:09Kearns: All right
- 28:10Ryan: is a chance, but I'm gonna slash it.
- 28:12But my father-in-law, when he worked for the MTA, he was, um,
- 28:18when they filmed this movie, and he said Woody Harrelson was amazing.
- 28:22Uh, the other two, um, it was rough.
- 28:25It was
- 28:25Kearns: Wesley Snipes was supposed to have been a bit of a diva in his, in
- 28:28Jon: What?
- 28:29Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:30Jon: I just noticed, and I'm gonna point it out, what's happening
- 28:33with his eye in this picture?
- 28:35Kearns: yeah, it's,
- 28:37Jon: He's got, this one's okay.
- 28:38Where's this one going?
- 28:40Kearns: It's definitely got to do with the angle.
- 28:42messed him up on that
- 28:45Ryan: zombie money train
- 28:46Jon: Where are you looking?
- 28:47Kearns: p- they're-- his eyes are fine, but it's also made worse by the fact
- 28:50that his eye color and the black next to it are, like, identical, so it pulls it
- 28:54Jon: Uh-uh.
- 28:56Ryan: He might be looking at J.Lo, I don't
- 28:58Kearns: But they're also cutting off the white of his other eye so he looks
- 29:01like there's less of it and it's a whole
- 29:03Jon: Yeah.
- 29:04Kearns: trick
- 29:06Jon: Yeah.
- 29:07All right.
- 29:07Movie number three, gentlemen, is Snowpiercer
- 29:11Kearns: This movie sucked
- 29:13Ryan: It did, and the comic's better.
- 29:16Jon: I agree.
- 29:17This movie had so much hype, there was so much word of mouth, and then I
- 29:22watched it, I was bored out of my mind
- 29:24Kearns: awful.
- 29:24And then like, look at the cast.
- 29:26You're like, "What the hell, man?
- 29:27How do you botch
- 29:28Jon: Bong Joon Ho.
- 29:30Like there's so many good names involved in this, and it just bored me
- 29:34Kearns: It sucked.
- 29:35This movie's definitely a slash.
- 29:37I think it was, uh, post-"Captain America" Chris Evans too, which you were like
- 29:41kinda like, "What are you doing, man?
- 29:43You took
- 29:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:48Ryan: America and they're like we have this film sitting here Captain
- 29:51America's big let's release it right now and jump on those coattails and
- 29:55no so that's why it's a slash as well
- 29:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:58Ryan: the comic book does it so much better and the build-up
- 30:01to the end is definitely
- 30:03Kearns: It looks like the Mandalorian's helmet if you look at the damn train.
- 30:07Doesn't it look like the Mandalorian's coming at you?
- 30:09Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:11I mean, uh, you might as well keep the, the Star Wars going 'cause
- 30:15look at that hair on this lady
- 30:17Kearns: a good point
- 30:19Jon: She got the last cinnamon buns.
- 30:24Okay, so
- 30:26Ryan: able to watch that film again.
- 30:27It's like, "Look, Cinnamon Bunch John"
- 30:31Jon: Movie number four, Horror Express.
- 30:35Kearns: this
- 30:36Jon: Oh, man.
- 30:37I l- I love this movie just for the cast alone.
- 30:42Telly Savalas, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing?
- 30:45Kearns: Wow,
- 30:45Jon: It's
- 30:46Kearns: insane
- 30:47Ryan: the bad guy?
- 30:49Jon: No, not really.
- 30:51Ryan: all right
- 30:52Jon: I love Telly Savalas.
- 30:55I'll watch him in just about anything.
- 30:59So I guess Kerns you have to slash horror expert?
- 31:03Kearns: I've only got one stash so far
- 31:06Ryan: I have zero stashes and how many slashes I got?
- 31:11Three
- 31:11Jon: Uh, three so far, depending on what you're doing with Horror Express
- 31:15Ryan: Uh, this'll be a fourth one.
- 31:16I've never seen it.
- 31:18Jon: I gotta, I gotta put this on just for you guys to wa- have seen it.
- 31:22I think it's really good.
- 31:23This was, um, I wanna say middle school.
- 31:27I went to my friend's house.
- 31:29We went to the library to get movies 'cause he didn't live near a video store,
- 31:33and we got this, and we were so confused by it when we were, like, 11 or 12.
- 31:39And then watching it as, as an adult, it's fantastic.
- 31:43I love Horror Express
- 31:44Ryan: The mask looks familiar.
- 31:46Like I've seen the mask
- 31:47Jon: Yeah, i- i- it, a- any, any clip show it pops up in
- 31:54Kearns: Nightmare of terror traveling aboard the Horror Express
- 31:59Jon: Oh.
- 32:00All right.
- 32:02Next.
- 32:04There it is.
- 32:05Kearns: Stash
- 32:06Jon: and Automobiles.
- 32:07Kearns: I like me
- 32:11Ryan: Where's your
- 32:12Jon: t-
- 32:12Ryan: Between two pillows.
- 32:13Those aren't pillows
- 32:15Kearns: This, this movie, uh, is, is supposed to be a comedy or a dramedy,
- 32:21but, uh, man, it's makes me so sad, especially since John Candy passed so
- 32:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:26Mm-hmm.
- 32:27Kearns: Is
- 32:27Jon: And you, like I, un- until that John Candy documentary, I really hadn't
- 32:34thought about the dramatic elements of planes, trains, and automobiles that much.
- 32:41And then, then,
- 32:42Kearns: and then like,
- 32:43Jon: yeah
- 32:43Kearns: you've rewatched it
- 32:46Jon: Every year.
- 32:47Kearns: You
- 32:47Jon: Every year.
- 32:48Kearns: Wow,
- 32:49Jon: It's my Thanksgiving movie.
- 32:50Kearns: 'Cause yeah
- 32:50Jon: Yeah, it's my Thanksgiving movie
- 32:53Ryan: Agreed
- 32:53Kearns: 'Cause
- 32:53Jon: almost every year
- 32:55Kearns: I can't watch it and not, as an adult and not
- 32:57think of the dramatic moments
- 32:59Jon: Yeah, and well now that it's pointed out to me, it's like,
- 33:02it's very much very dramedy.
- 33:05But, you know, until you really pay attention to it on that regard,
- 33:09at least for me, it was a comedy
- 33:11Kearns: Yeah.
- 33:14Ryan: I
- 33:14Kearns: mean, a stash
- 33:16Jon: Yeah, two stashes.
- 33:18Kearns: Gotta stash this beast
- 33:20Ryan: a dramedy.
- 33:21Like, 'cause you can see those drama points, 'cause Steve Martin's such a jerk,
- 33:25and John Candy, that lightheartedness, I
- 33:28Kearns: Well, yeah, but he's such a pain.
- 33:29That's the whole point
- 33:30Jon: Yeah.
- 33:31Kearns: Martin has every right to be annoyed with the fact that this guy
- 33:34Jon: Yeah.
- 33:34Kearns: out like not even why he is the way he is, but that he's just, he's that
- 33:38way, but he's also, there's no harm in it.
- 33:41There's no
- 33:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:42Kearns: him, and he also has nothing
- 33:45Jon: Yeah
- 33:46Ryan: The guy's just trying to sell shower curtains, rings
- 33:49and read the Canadian Mounted.
- 33:50That's all he wants to do
- 33:51Kearns: And he wants to hang out with his new buddy, Steve Martin, for as long as he
- 33:54Jon: Yeah.
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:56'Cause it's a connection.
- 33:57Kearns: it's sad.
- 33:59Jon: It's a connection.
- 34:00Kearns: It's
- 34:00Ryan: that's so good
- 34:02Jon: Let's see if we can cheer it up with
- 34:03Kearns: should
- 34:04Jon: movie number the six
- 34:05Kearns: and have like John Candy murder Steve Martin, but
- 34:08keep him as a friend forever
- 34:13Ryan: Ooh.
- 34:14Uh, okay.
- 34:15You're
- 34:15Jon: Okay.
- 34:16Ryan: down
- 34:18Jon: All right.
- 34:18Next movie.
- 34:21Midnight Meat Train
- 34:23Ryan: Stash.
- 34:24Kearns: That's my third stache too.
- 34:26Gotta do it.
- 34:26I love this actor as well.
- 34:28Ryan: Vinnie
- 34:29Kearns: Yeah, baby.
- 34:30He was great in Gone in 60 Seconds.
- 34:32He was great in, uh, my God, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
- 34:37Jon: Mm-hmm
- 34:38Ryan: Yep.
- 34:38Kearns: and Snatch.
- 34:40Ryan: Yep
- 34:40Kearns: He's just great
- 34:42Ryan: Oh, Snatch is, I'm, he shines more I think in, uh, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking
- 34:47Barrels 'cause he's like the main guy.
- 34:50I feel like with Snatch, like he's but he's like, there's so
- 34:56many other performers with Don Cheadle and Brad Pitt going around.
- 35:00Like it's, doesn't hit the surface as much and it's Vinnie Jones' great Euro trip
- 35:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:07Kearns: Yeah, he was good in EuroTrip.
- 35:10He was good in EuroTrip
- 35:14Ryan: It's
- 35:14Jon: All right.
- 35:14Ryan: story
- 35:15Kearns: so let's see what we screwed up on
- 35:16Jon: Z-
- 35:16Kearns: John, 'cause
- 35:17Jon: so,
- 35:18Kearns: right?
- 35:18Jon: no, Ryan has one stash left.
- 35:22Ryan: And one cut
- 35:22Jon: That means Kerns, you can say goodbye, too.
- 35:27Throw mama from the train
- 35:29Kearns: with this, but aw
- 35:32Ryan: But here's the
- 35:33Kearns: He's so tiny.
- 35:34I just watched Get
- 35:35Jon: So
- 35:36Kearns: last night, thanks to John, oh my God, is Danny
- 35:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 35:43and he makes Billy Crystal look giant, and he's not that big either
- 35:47Kearns: Billy Crystal's a little shorter than me.
- 35:50And I'm not very tall,
- 35:55But I know
- 35:55Jon: All right.
- 35:56Kearns: is
- 35:58Jon: All right, Ryan, here's your coin toss.
- 36:00Ryan: Yeah, but how evil are you?
- 36:01Would you
- 36:02Jon: Do you
- 36:02Ryan: Under Siege 2 as number one, or are you gonna put Silver Streak at number one?
- 36:06Because I love Throw Mama From a Train.
- 36:08Kearns: You gotta
- 36:09Jon: Uh-huh.
- 36:10Kearns: keep it then
- 36:10Jon: I mean, the…
- 36:12Ryan: But
- 36:13Jon: you…
- 36:13Ryan: it's
- 36:13Kearns: It's the bait.
- 36:14It's the bait, Ryan.
- 36:15Take it.
- 36:16Take it
- 36:16Jon: much,
- 36:17Ryan: Streak
- 36:18Jon: much have you lost on a coin toss?
- 36:21Ryan: I'm actually pretty good with it, but the thing is, is I know you.
- 36:24You might put under siege too,
- 36:26Kearns: Is that,
- 36:26Ryan: can't
- 36:27Kearns: is that a "No Country for Old Men" reference, by the way?
- 36:31Jon: It was.
- 36:32Kearns: Mr. Jon.
- 36:34That is very, that makes me very happy on our Cormac McCarthy
- 36:39Jon: That's, that's two Cormacs today.
- 36:42Kearns: I gotta get a Blood Meridian in there too
- 36:45Ryan: Well, you know what?
- 36:46I'm gonna stash it.
- 36:47I'll
- 36:48Jon: I think you have to because you're, you're just gambling that the last
- 36:52movie is, is gonna be w- y- you're assuming it's gonna be one of two
- 36:55Ryan: Oh, good.
- 36:57Jon: things, and it's not either of those two
- 36:59Kearns: Only a fool, only a fool takes the mystery box when he has
- 37:03a good thing in his hand already
- 37:06Jon: Oh, no, it's not gonna be Terra Train.
- 37:10Ryan: No?
- 37:11Jon: Any other guesses?
- 37:12I think this is a pretty obvious one
- 37:15Kearns: I got nothing
- 37:18Jon: All right.
- 37:18Movie number eight is Murder on the Orient Express
- 37:24Kearns: Damn, we, we are dumb.
- 37:26Oh, no.
- 37:29Well
- 37:30Ryan: you know what though?
- 37:31I'll accept Throw Mama Over the Train, even though is the original, right?
- 37:36We're, not the
- 37:37Jon: yeah.
- 37:38Ryan: this is a classic
- 37:40Kearns: Agatha
- 37:40Jon: Look at that cast.
- 37:42Kearns: I don't want
- 37:43Jon: Look at that cast
- 37:45Kearns: dead.
- 37:45They're all dead now.
- 37:48Oh, no
- 37:50Jon: yeah, I think they might all be dead now.
- 37:53Just doing a quick…
- 37:54Kearns: for sure.
- 37:56Jon: Conor, you… Jacqueline Bisset might be alive.
- 38:00Ryan: He's still alive.
- 38:01Jon: Who?
- 38:02Ryan: Yep, Michael York, Basil Expedition
- 38:05Kearns: Basil.
- 38:07Um, yeah, so let's, um, let's give us one back so we can keep that
- 38:13because that's the best movie on the list, and it's the last one.
- 38:17You
- 38:18Jon: it is.
- 38:19Kearns: But all
- 38:19Jon: You know the last movie's always gonna be the best one
- 38:22Kearns: It is.
- 38:24That's the game, and that's part one of Train to Busan.
- 38:27We're gonna get out of here, but you can find this part two on YouTube, and if
- 38:32you're listening on audio, guess what?
- 38:33We're cutting this out so you won't know about it
- 38:36Ryan: Yeah.
- 38:36Jon: Right,
- 38:39yeah
- 38:41Kearns: general vibes about South Korean horror.
- 38:44We kinda got into it a little bit already, but how does it stack up?
- 38:50Jon: Like it.
- 38:50I, generally find the South Korean stuff to be scarier at this point
- 38:54than a lot of the American stuff.
- 38:57Kearns: Ooh.
- 38:58Kind of like Ryan said earlier
- 39:00Ryan: It,
- 39:00Jon: Mm-hmm
- 39:01Ryan: that one step further.
- 39:03Like, I feel like there's too much… Now, I don't wanna say there's too
- 39:06much regulations, 'cause you got indie filmmakers doing what they gotta do.
- 39:10Um, we've seen with Obsession, you got the choice with the
- 39:13R rating, the NC-17 rating.
- 39:15But over in Europe and Asia, th- and there it's like
- 39:21Kearns: If we can't…
- 39:22Ryan: you want
- 39:22Kearns: Where else is producing?
- 39:23China's been trying to throw stuff out there.
- 39:26Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:26Kearns: Uh, they're doing a lot of anime and stuff now.
- 39:29I don't think I can think of a single Chinese movie, mainstream
- 39:33Chinese movie that got big worldwide.
- 39:35Um, what about Japanese?
- 39:38Jon: Oh, Japan is, Japan kills it too.
- 39:40Japan and South Korean horror are just amazing.
- 39:45and then you get the, like, little sneaky ones in, down in there that
- 39:49you, you don't ever think about.
- 39:50Like Thailand is killing it with, with some horror.
- 39:54you get occasionally some good stuff from, like, the Philippines.
- 39:58there may be a lot more than a little good stuff from some of these places,
- 40:01it's just not as popular now yet
- 40:06Kearns: We did two movies at the very least, Basilisk and Sweet Home.
- 40:10Not Sweet Home.
- 40:11What's the name of the giant chicken movie again?
- 40:13Zombiology.
- 40:14Zombiology is definitively Japanese, correct?
- 40:17Jon: Mm-hmm
- 40:18Kearns: Zombiology's… So it's a Japanese-produced movie, and
- 40:21then Basilisk is produced in Turkey or Romania or some kinda…
- 40:25Jon: Uh, Baskin.
- 40:27Kearns: Baskin.
- 40:28Jon: yeah.
- 40:28Kearns: Basilisk.
- 40:29That's an anime, by the way.
- 40:31That's why I got, I got my wires crossed.
- 40:33Ryan: about,
- 40:33Kearns: But yeah- By the way, everybody, we are still talking about Train to Busan.
- 40:37Train to Busan Part
- 40:39Jon: Yes.
- 40:40Kearns: But all right, so we've done two foreign films far.
- 40:43This would make our
- 40:44Jon: Well, I mean, pans
- 40:46Ryan: Yep.
- 40:47Kearns: yeah, that counts.
- 40:48I mean, Guillermo del Toro's house is like in LA,
- 40:52Jon: Yeah, but it, I don't think it was when he did Pans.
- 40:56Kearns: Okay, fair
- 40:57Jon: I think Pans was still v- very foreign
- 41:00Kearns: Okay, we'll count it
- 41:02Ryan: they consider it a
- 41:02Jon: I ge- I generally count anything that's, that I have to
- 41:05watch with subtitles on as foreign
- 41:09Kearns: Okay, so four.
- 41:11Four
- 41:12Jon: Yeah.
- 41:13Ryan: Or
- 41:13Kearns: Well,
- 41:14Jon: mean, and then, and then the, the English and,
- 41:17Kearns: or something
- 41:18Jon: the English and the Irish.
- 41:19We, we hit Ireland.
- 41:21Kearns: we can count that, can't we?
- 41:22Jon: The boys from County Hell.
- 41:24Holcomb.
- 41:25Holcomb and Oddity
- 41:28Kearns: Bank- That, those are bankrolled by US studios
- 41:30Jon: Vanity maybe not.
- 41:32Boy, Boys from County Hell
- 41:34Kearns: That one I'll count.
- 41:36That one's the true Irish one.
- 41:37Ryan: All right, so five.
- 41:39Five.
- 41:40Kearns: Yeah, because if it's like Universal Studios presents
- 41:44Ryan: I
- 41:44Kearns: Eastern Romanian horror
- 41:47Ryan: Oddity though I feel was like more independent than Hokum.
- 41:51Hokum was more
- 41:52Jon: Hoca- Hokum's definitely more Hollywood.
- 41:54I think, I think Oddity you could count
- 41:56Kearns: oddity, yeah.
- 41:58can do it, so we can give it a six.
- 42:00Give it a six.
- 42:00That's also, like, we were talking
- 42:02Jon: Two more.
- 42:03Kearns: we
- 42:04Jon: Hold on.
- 42:04Kearns: w- Oh, wait, we got two
- 42:05Jon: The Dead Snows.
- 42:06Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 42:08Ryan: So we did
- 42:09Kearns: We did those
- 42:10Jon: We've done at least…
- 42:11Kearns: babies
- 42:12Jon: we're, we're, we're running about a, a 10th of our movies being foreign.
- 42:16There might be a few more
- 42:18Kearns: Yeah, there's a couple out there
- 42:19Ryan: Kronos on there.
- 42:20Let's throw Cure on there
- 42:22Kearns: Yeah, just to stack up the numbers.
- 42:25But all right,
- 42:25Jon: Yeah.
- 42:26Kearns: about this is that it's a nice blend of action and horror.
- 42:29Kinda like The
- 42:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 42:31Kearns: There was the one where the, the, like, demons from hell came and were, were
- 42:35rapturing, like anti-rapturing people.
- 42:37That was South Korean as well.
- 42:38I forgot to bring that up.
- 42:39That's a TV show.
- 42:41Maybe that is- maybe that's Hellbound
- 42:44Jon: Might be.
- 42:45Kearns: Yeah, 'cause that
- 42:46Jon: Might be.
- 42:46Kearns: 'cause that's very action forward too, but it's also scary.
- 42:50They just
- 42:50Jon: Mm-hmm
- 42:50Kearns: like you're in traffic, and then they just zap in and start tossing cars
- 42:54around, and they rip one dude out of the car, and then they bring him to hell.
- 42:57And people are, like, living in this world where that just happens sometimes
- 43:02Ryan: It's all right
- 43:03Kearns: They're steroided up like dudes like from the movie Ghost,
- 43:07when they used to take the bad guys away at the end of Ghost.
- 43:11Do you remember?
- 43:12Yeah.
- 43:13Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:17Kearns: on that one.
- 43:17He was like, "Ooh." But yeah, the
- 43:22Jon: Yeah
- 43:22Kearns: thing is fun, but there's a, there's a, a few scenes where they get out
- 43:26of the train, where they get to different stops and they have to get out and
- 43:29Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 43:30Kearns: right?
- 43:31And,
- 43:32Ryan: Well,
- 43:32Kearns: of the funny things you guys brought up was the audacity of
- 43:35asking if a pregnant woman can run.
- 43:38a pregnant woman can run
- 43:41Ryan: It's, you know, I mean, it was her husband because it's,
- 43:44um, oh God, uh, not Young Guk.
- 43:47What's his name?
- 43:48Uh, Sing, Sing Wa?
- 43:51Yep.
- 43:52Sing Wa,
- 43:52Jon: Yeah
- 43:53Ryan: says it to his wife, uh, Seong, Keong, um, that like she's
- 43:59got to run and I'm like watching it.
- 44:01I'm like the audacity to tell her to run.
- 44:03I mean, I get it.
- 44:05Zombies are chasing you, but
- 44:07Kearns: Well, he's also holding them off.
- 44:08I would've told her
- 44:09Jon: Yeah.
- 44:10Yeah
- 44:12Ryan: Fair.
- 44:13Kearns: Like I'm gonna sac- potentially sacrifice myself.
- 44:16Get, get to steppin'.
- 44:17We gotta make moves
- 44:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:21Yeah, yeah, he, he's the first guy that really steps up in this
- 44:25movie and, and to take it on
- 44:30Ryan: Wraps his arms up with the tape, like he's, he's in there.
- 44:34He's like a gladiator
- 44:36Kearns: He's, yeah, he's awesome.
- 44:37And is, did, does this predate World War Z or is it post World War Z?
- 44:43Ryan: I think
- 44:44Jon: It's pretty close to the same da- it's definitely after the book.
- 44:49Kearns: Definitely after the book.
- 44:50'Cause the wrapping of the forearm
- 44:52Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 44:52Kearns: in both movies as well, and I was
- 44:54Jon: Yeah
- 44:55Kearns: was borrowed
- 44:56Ryan: three years apart.
- 44:57Uh, World War Z came out 2013
- 45:00Kearns: Actually, both of those ripped it off from 28 Days Later anyway.
- 45:03I
- 45:04Jon: Yeah
- 45:04Kearns: that happens in the 28 Days Later movie as well, he pulls that move.
- 45:09Yep.
- 45:10So nevermind.
- 45:11They both are thieves.
- 45:13I'm glad you guys brought up, uh, what's his name, Sang-hwa, because
- 45:18he's, he's the only, like, hero through and through this movie.
- 45:22He's a hero from the first time you see him all
- 45:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:26Kearns: whereas Seok-woo is more of a, a growth, a character growth
- 45:31kind of experience where he becomes
- 45:33Jon: Yep.
- 45:33Kearns: Soo-an actually wanted and deserved
- 45:37Jon: Yeah
- 45:38Ryan: villain though, Yon-Sok, who's,
- 45:42Jon: Sucks.
- 45:43Kearns: He does suck.
- 45:44He
- 45:44Jon: He
- 45:45Kearns: manipulating.
- 45:46He does a lot of… So he, at one point in time, tricks the people
- 45:49into kicking out the survivors
- 45:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:52Kearns: waded their way through a ton of zombies throughout the train to
- 45:57Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:57Kearns: to go.
- 45:58It was like, "Ugh." And
- 46:01Jon: I mean, that's a gut punch, but I do ki- that's one of the only times I kind
- 46:06of understand where he's coming from.
- 46:08Kearns: Yeah, 'cause you don't know if they're
- 46:10Jon: You don't know.
- 46:10Yeah.
- 46:11Ryan: it's true.
- 46:12But
- 46:13Kearns: not
- 46:13Jon: You…
- 46:13Kearns: did it.
- 46:14He did it
- 46:14Jon: No.
- 46:15No.
- 46:17Kearns: him out
- 46:18Jon: Mm-hmm
- 46:19Ryan: He punched him and that's like where that whole incident happened.
- 46:22Jon: Yeah.
- 46:23Ryan: punches him in the face.
- 46:24He's like, "They're infected." But he's just a jerk the entire film
- 46:29Kearns: Yeah,
- 46:29Jon: Oh, absolutely.
- 46:31Yeah
- 46:31Kearns: two characters we haven't brought up yet, but it's Young-guk,
- 46:34who's the baseball player, and Jin-hee, who's the girl who had a crush on
- 46:39him, and they both happen to live
- 46:40Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:40Kearns: team gets wiped out, yada, yada.
- 46:43they go through some action sequences together.
- 46:45They're kind of just along for the ride.
- 46:46They're not really developed much or anything.
- 46:49Jon: No
- 46:49Kearns: purpose is for Yong-suk to be a jerk to her,
- 46:54Jon: Yeah.
- 46:54Kearns: wrecks her
- 46:56Jon: Yeah, he's consistently awful to her
- 46:59Kearns: The villain just gets her at the end.
- 47:01Basically, like trips her so he can get away, but it's worse than
- 47:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:05Yeah.
- 47:06Yeah.
- 47:07Kearns: Pretty brew
- 47:08Jon: he's, he's a bad, bad guy, and he, like, he's the kinda guy that you
- 47:15use in these movies to show that people are often worse than the zombies.
- 47:21Kearns: Yep.
- 47:22They don't
- 47:22Jon: And s-
- 47:23Kearns: They don't make it the theme,
- 47:25Jon: no.
- 47:26Kearns: which I like too
- 47:27Jon: No.
- 47:28But there, there's also, there's a lot of social commentary built in around him,
- 47:35and, you know, some of it is… W- one of the reasons we don't do more foreign
- 47:41so far is it's harder to talk about some of the commentary that comes up
- 47:45in there, because I'm not South Korean.
- 47:47I don't know what their society is really like.
- 47:50But they, I mean, they, he… The thing with him is a universal, you know,
- 47:57corporate greed, corporate villain guy keeping everybody below him down, and
- 48:04in this case, putting them all at risk
- 48:06Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:08That sounds about right.
- 48:10It sounds like kind of we can identify, Japanese can identify.
- 48:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:18Kearns: um, I don't know, I just… So much about this movie to talk about
- 48:22Jon: Yeah.
- 48:23They, there's definitely a lot of, lot of other social
- 48:26commentaries going on in here.
- 48:27A lot of it is South Korean specific.
- 48:30You know, the, the two older women on the train, there, there's a lot of
- 48:36things built around that about, you know, the loneliness of being elderly
- 48:40in South Korea, and, you know, it's, their, their sort of social security
- 48:46system is not fully functional.
- 48:49You know, a lot of, a lot of old people live in poverty and, you know, sort of
- 48:53abandoned by loved ones and, you know, alone, and they bond with one another,
- 48:59and that's kind of the case with those two
- 49:03Ryan: Yeah,
- 49:03Kearns: Sucks
- 49:04Ryan: too
- 49:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:06Kearns: That absolutely sucks.
- 49:09Well, thanks for that, Debbie Downer.
- 49:11Geez
- 49:11Ryan: oh yeah, I, I got an interesting question.
- 49:14Kearns: Okay
- 49:15Ryan: did these zombies become a- unalive?
- 49:19Because they've gotten cracked in the head multiple times with bats throughout
- 49:22the movie, they've been punched, right?
- 49:24Like, there's no ending, ending them.
- 49:26They're, like,
- 49:27Kearns: That's a good question because we didn't really see any
- 49:30of them get put down for good.
- 49:33Jon: No.
- 49:34Kearns: They don't rely on
- 49:34Jon: No
- 49:35Kearns: which I think if they showed more use of firearms, we might
- 49:38get a definitive answer to this
- 49:40Ryan: Well,
- 49:40Jon: Well,
- 49:41Ryan: definitely
- 49:42Jon: yeah, and I, I would guess based on the end, they've learned
- 49:48that, that firearms are effective
- 49:51Kearns: Yep.
- 49:51I was gonna say because of that one scene.
- 49:54God, what a
- 49:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:55Kearns: ending
- 49:58What a great ending
- 49:59Ryan: good
- 50:00Jon: I mean, it really, you know, you get, you get a couple
- 50:04of small emotional scenes, you know, the old lady's kinda sad.
- 50:10But up un- up until… I mean, it's a, it's a little sad, you know,
- 50:15the one seeing the other turned,
- 50:18Kearns: Yeah
- 50:19Jon: on the other.
- 50:19Like, I mean, that's kind of emotional.
- 50:22But it's really
- 50:25The whole vibe changes once they're off the train
- 50:28Kearns: Oh, yeah.
- 50:29Ryan: Yes
- 50:32Kearns: I agree completely.
- 50:33Can you explain that a little bit more for the listeners, what you mean by that?
- 50:37Jon: The, the train is like the action.
- 50:39It's the zombie survival, and you get a little bit of that in the moments
- 50:43when they're first off the train where it becomes survival, but then
- 50:46it becomes, you know, really dramatic at that point where it's, you know,
- 50:54now we're not running, we're dying.
- 50:58We're losing, we're losing people in the cast now that you
- 51:02didn't think you were gonna lose
- 51:05Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:06And there's, it's a
- 51:08Jon: It, it's, it's probably a good time to, to… Yeah,
- 51:13we're gonna spoil this now.
- 51:15You're gonna, we're gonna-
- 51:16Kearns: job of not spoiling it yet too.
- 51:18Yeah, this is the point in the
- 51:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:20Kearns: we will spoil the ending of this movie
- 51:23Jon: So if you haven't seen this 10-year-old movie yet, uh,
- 51:26pause, watch it, come back in a couple hours and finish this up
- 51:32Ryan: It's free.
- 51:33Just get through the 10-minute SPCA commercials, you'll be fine.
- 51:37Jon: just, just go buy it.
- 51:38Just like,
- 51:39Kearns: Yeah, you can do
- 51:40Jon: I, I don't, I don't think the Blu-ray is more than $15 now.
- 51:44Go buy it
- 51:45Ryan: 12 bucks on Amazon and the steelbook I think right now is on sale for 20
- 51:50Jon: Yeah, just get it.
- 51:51Just go get it.
- 51:52It's, it's worth it.
- 51:55But anyway, back to the end, and the… That last 20 minutes,
- 52:04I'm te- they get off the train.
- 52:06They've reached, you know, there's a derailed train.
- 52:09They can't go down that line further.
- 52:12The, operator of the train hops off to try to find a functional train
- 52:18that he can continue on, and he does.
- 52:21Mm-hmm.
- 52:22Kearns: There's some other fun stuff that happens, causes a
- 52:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:26Mm-hmm.
- 52:28Ryan: the flaming
- 52:29Kearns: yeah, we get, we get,
- 52:31Jon: Oui
- 52:31Kearns: um, his name?
- 52:34Jan Sucks to, uh… He, he kills a few people trying to save himself
- 52:38and all that, and then we, we
- 52:40Jon: Yeah
- 52:40Kearns: our cast down to three survivors,
- 52:44Jon: Three survivors and, Yon-suk whose fate,
- 52:47Kearns: Yep.
- 52:48Sealed
- 52:49Jon: un- unclear for a, a bit there.
- 52:52You know, you get… Our, our operator gets a train in motion, Yon-suk gets
- 52:59on that, and then eventually, uh, Seong, Su-an, and, um, Seok get to
- 53:06that running train, and they're able to get on and fight off zombies.
- 53:12they go to open the driver's car and there's just zombie businessmen
- 53:20Kearns: Yep.
- 53:20And he's waiting there sucking, and there's a
- 53:23Jon: Yep.
- 53:23Ryan: yet.
- 53:24Kearns: Old-- Yep.
- 53:25Ryan: turn yet
- 53:25Kearns: He turns
- 53:26Jon: Yeah, he's…
- 53:27Kearns: like af- yeah, they do a good job with that.
- 53:29He turns
- 53:30Jon: Yeah.
- 53:31Kearns: which is
- 53:32Jon: Yeah.
- 53:33Ryan: Which
- 53:34Jon: Yeah
- 53:34Ryan: rewind real quick before that.
- 53:37What did you guys think of the, what, the train car when they're
- 53:41crushing down, you see the zombies going through the glass and stuff?
- 53:45Like, weren't you on the edge of the seat
- 53:46Kearns: Loved it.
- 53:47Ryan: watched it?
- 53:48Jon: I l- I, I love the, really love the scenes of the zombies
- 53:51and the glass in this movie.
- 53:53Kearns: Yep.
- 53:53Jon: In the, first train station when it's the zombie soldiers crashing through glass
- 53:58Kearns: Mm-hmm
- 53:59Ryan: Uh, yep
- 54:00Jon: And then, you know, crashing through the glass of a train car.
- 54:04Like, that's, that's really good.
- 54:07I like that
- 54:08Kearns: And it's unique the idea of zombies suspended above you w-
- 54:13and a pane of glass being between you and them is just great tension
- 54:17Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:19Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 54:20Jon: Yeah.
- 54:22Ryan: It's just that close quarters, that claustrophobia, you know?
- 54:25Jon: Yeah
- 54:25Kearns: can we just discuss at the end when, when Seok-woo decides
- 54:29to shove his hand into mouth?
- 54:33That's completely unnecessary.
- 54:34Am I the only one
- 54:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:36No, you're not, and there…
- 54:38Ryan: No.
- 54:39Jon: When we get to, when we get to reviews, you'll hear,
- 54:41you'll hear more of that.
- 54:43Um
- 54:44Kearns: Good because what the hell, bro?
- 54:47Ryan: I, what, what else was he gonna do?
- 54:48I mean, if he, he was trying to protect his daughter
- 54:51Kearns: I can think of like seven or eight things that he could have done
- 54:53besides shoving his hand in the mouth
- 54:55Jon: Yeah.
- 54:56I mean, I mean they, there, there are a few moments even before that
- 55:00where it looked like he could have had some leverage to, to just sort of let
- 55:05gravity take Hyun Suk off the train.
- 55:10Kearns: But
- 55:10Jon: he, you know
- 55:12Kearns: I'm glad that I brought it up then.
- 55:13Well, it'll come up in the reviews.
- 55:14We'll hear what the other people have to say.
- 55:16Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:16Kearns: only, the only thing that irks me about this movie.
- 55:18I was like, if you're gonna do that, make it a non-negotiable.
- 55:22Make it something that had to happen to him, not a choice
- 55:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:27Kearns: that doesn't look like he had to have made that choice in the first place.
- 55:30But
- 55:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:32Kearns: Speaking
- 55:33Ryan: I was gonna say when he keeps focusing on the train, the chain
- 55:36on the train, I kept thinking that he would've went over and then he
- 55:40would've been caught on the chain and maybe bit his ankle in that direction.
- 55:45Because, I
- 55:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 55:50Ryan: that part.
- 55:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 55:53Ryan: but
- 55:53Jon: Yeah
- 55:54Ryan: talking to her, like you lose that scene then,
- 55:57Kearns: true
- 55:58Ryan: an important part
- 55:59Jon: Well, I mean, you don't have to lose it.
- 56:02You can get there in other ways.
- 56:04It's just the blatant hand in his mouth is
- 56:09Kearns: they do that scene, Ryan, is what we're talking about.
- 56:11And
- 56:12Ryan: it.
- 56:13Jon: I mean, I mean the,
- 56:14Kearns: it, but the guy
- 56:15Jon: the
- 56:15Kearns: write a bad review is gonna say exactly what I'm thinking, I'm sure
- 56:18Jon: the outcome works.
- 56:20The, like him, Seok-woo getting bit works.
- 56:24you had already established Suwon had a, recital at school and she was
- 56:30supposed to sing and she wouldn't sing, and it's because he wasn't there
- 56:34so she didn't wanna sing her song for other people and not for him.
- 56:39Like he… And that, and that's the growth.
- 56:42He, but it's also, you know, it's also kind of in doing that, it sort
- 56:48of minimizes his growth too because now he's leaving his daughter anyway
- 56:57You know, heroic or not, he's now forced himself to get bit, and, you know, we
- 57:03know that's the end, and we're left with just, uh, pregnant Seong and Suwon
- 57:09Ryan: Yep.
- 57:10And that's, you know, after that scene, mean, that's a nail-biter
- 57:15too at the end with the soldiers.
- 57:17And I really thought we were gonna get a unhappy ending, and
- 57:21I would've been fine with it.
- 57:22Jon: Oh.
- 57:23Oh, absolutely.
- 57:24Kearns: I
- 57:24Jon: But
- 57:25Kearns: with it
- 57:26Jon: I, it didn't, it didn't need the unhappy ending, but my goodness,
- 57:30if you didn't believe in the, in those last few moments that you
- 57:33were about to get the unhappy ending
- 57:36Kearns: the choice of even putting that in there worthwhile to me as well,
- 57:39because like, if they had, they had just had them walk into safety, it wouldn't
- 57:44have had nearly as much impact as being
- 57:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 57:46Mm-hmm
- 57:48Kearns: And then they have her singing her little song, which like
- 57:50he said, harkens back to the whole relationship with her dad, which is
- 57:54the whole thing the movie's about.
- 57:56I think it's a movie about being a decent father and not wasting
- 57:59your time at work, but actually
- 58:01Jon: Yep.
- 58:02Kearns: which is why I declare today that I am quitting my job.
- 58:06I gotta feed them and clothe them and house them.
- 58:08Never mind, but maybe
- 58:10Jon: Yeah
- 58:12Kearns: Yeah, I doubt it
- 58:13Jon: Yeah, probably not.
- 58:15Well, maybe
- 58:16Kearns: we just gotta start robbing bitches.
- 58:19r- not like ladies, I mean like bitches.
- 58:22Like the, the metaphorical ones.
- 58:25Like the people like, like Seok Woo.
- 58:29They be robbing us, let's be robbing them
- 58:32Ryan: I got my pantyhose ready from Racing Arizona.
- 58:34Kearns: I bet you
- 58:35Jon: That was… So is that why you have pantyhose, Ryan?
- 58:39Is that really why you have pantyhose?
- 58:42Ryan: Yes, it's one of my favorite movies.
- 58:44Coen Brothers, 1992?
- 58:47'92?
- 58:48Jon: 90?
- 58:49No, it's 80s for sure.
- 58:52Ryan: '89.
- 58:53Kearns: Ryan.
- 58:54Ryan: I, I know I'm slipping a little bit
- 58:56Kearns: No, I'm more concerned about the pantyhose
- 58:59Jon: Yeah
- 59:00Ryan: just to cover, cover the face
- 59:02Kearns: Oh.
- 59:03Jon: I mean, I mean, this all said, we've j- we've just put our cr- our
- 59:07criminal conspiracy on record, so we should probably not commit crimes
- 59:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:14Yeah, this isn't about actually committing crimes.
- 59:16I'll see
- 59:17Jon: No crimes.
- 59:20Kearns: But yeah, let's get into, uh, some reviews.
- 59:24Jon: All right.
- 59:24Five stars.
- 59:26One of the best zombie movies out there.
- 59:29The storyline was great.
- 59:31Character development was there.
- 59:33Action-packed and suspenseful scenes.
- 59:36You truly feel yourself hating the main antagonist, which is
- 59:41surprisingly not the zombies.
- 59:44Overall, great story
- 59:46Ryan: It's a good
- 59:47Kearns: Okay, I'll take it
- 59:49Jon: Yep.
- 59:51All right, and now we get to the one stars.
- 59:53This one's a little longer than I usually include, but it touches on
- 59:58some of the stuff that I, I think people would find issue with, and
- 1:00:02some of it they just don't understand.
- 1:00:06Uh, one star.
- 1:00:08"This film is an absolute joke.
- 1:00:11It makes no sense whatsoever.
- 1:00:14First of all, why did they cast a woman who is clearly in
- 1:00:18her 30s to play a grandmother?
- 1:00:20And why on earth would this grandmother open a door to a bunch of zombies?" I
- 1:00:26think we explained that. "Then there's the guy at the end who decides to put
- 1:00:31his hand in the mouth of a zombie.
- 1:00:34Real cinematic brilliance there.
- 1:00:37Because as everyone knows, the best way to fight a biting zombie is to
- 1:00:42literally offering up your own body parts.
- 1:00:46Genius.
- 1:00:47Can someone also explain why the weird limping guy at the start of the film goes
- 1:00:53on about how everyone is dead, only for us to never find out who he is or how
- 1:00:59he knew everything before anyone else?" Watch Soul Station, you'll understand.
- 1:01:05Um, "It felt like they put so much effort into building his character, but he
- 1:01:10ended up being as irrelevant as any NPC.
- 1:01:14That was seriously disappointing.
- 1:01:17And why is there just one guy clever enough to fight the zombies while half
- 1:01:22the world, including the military, is completely useless?" I think you've
- 1:01:27staggered into a different movie here. Um, "The lack of logic is staggering.
- 1:01:33I could go on and on, but it's pointless since everyone else apparently thinks
- 1:01:38this is the most amazing zombie movie ever made for some reason.
- 1:01:44Long story short, a pretty terrible movie with terrible acting.
- 1:01:48P.S. Love the Audi product placement, though."
- 1:01:55Kearns: I'm trying to
- 1:01:55Ryan: we know
- 1:01:55Kearns: think
- 1:01:56Ryan: know they drive an Audi.
- 1:01:57That's
- 1:01:58Jon: Yeah, or at least long to drive an Audi.
- 1:02:01Kearns: Yeah
- 1:02:02Ryan: wish.
- 1:02:03Jon: Yeah
- 1:02:04Ryan: I disagree.
- 1:02:05I mean, I get the hand thing as we were discussing, but I, I mean, to each its own
- 1:02:12Kearns: None of that stuff pulls you away from all the amazing aspects.
- 1:02:15Yeah, I, I hadn't really thought about the fact that they cast a 30-year-old
- 1:02:18to play the grandma and, like, did her
- 1:02:20Jon: Yeah.
- 1:02:20Kearns: I don't know if that's his
- 1:02:21Jon: Yeah.
- 1:02:22Kearns: Whatever.
- 1:02:23But she does the job.
- 1:02:25Jon: Yeah
- 1:02:26Kearns: you know, peels the boiled egg and all that stuff.
- 1:02:30It's fine.
- 1:02:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:32Yeah.
- 1:02:33Like, I mean, that doesn't really affect me in any way watching this movie.
- 1:02:38The only thing that he says that I, I can get behind is the
- 1:02:42sticking the hand in the mouth
- 1:02:43Kearns: Yep.
- 1:02:44And that to me is like you're, well, you're gonna find out when I give my
- 1:02:47review, it's not that big of a deal
- 1:02:49Jon: Nope.
- 1:02:50Um, and one more one star.
- 1:02:53One star.
- 1:02:55I'm literally furious right now.
- 1:02:58It gets plus half a star for granny opening the train doors after her
- 1:03:03sister gets eaten, but I am so mad at the rest of this dumbassery.
- 1:03:08The emotional
- 1:03:10Kearns: in the movie
- 1:03:13Jon: the emotional high at the end doesn't really hit when you put your hand
- 1:03:19over a zombie's mouth and then get bit.
- 1:03:23He could have tossed him over the side before he got combative.
- 1:03:27He could have used literally any other part of a-hole dude's body, but no.
- 1:03:35We're stuck with this, and then you give the sad pinky piano music
- 1:03:40like I should be sad and feel bad.
- 1:03:43Nah.
- 1:03:44That's all you, buddy.
- 1:03:46I feel nothing but vitriol for this film.
- 1:03:50Kearns: is right.
- 1:03:51So
- 1:03:51Jon: Yeah
- 1:03:52Kearns: who didn't pick up on the entire character arc of Seok-woo
- 1:03:56becoming S- Soo-an's dad, and like that whole over… Which they hammer home
- 1:04:02further when they're walking through the tunnel and she sings the song,
- 1:04:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:06Kearns: is gone, but like
- 1:04:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:10Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:11Kearns: It's just,
- 1:04:11Jon: was present when I needed him
- 1:04:13Kearns: Exactly.
- 1:04:15And just like how gripping and heartbreaking that is.
- 1:04:18So this guy also sucks.
- 1:04:20This
- 1:04:21Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:21Kearns: chud review.
- 1:04:23Jon: So
- 1:04:24Kearns: a chud, sir
- 1:04:25Jon: let's see if either of you are chuds or did you love Train to Busan?
- 1:04:31Kearns: Let's, I want Ryan to go first 'cause he, he
- 1:04:31gets corrupted by our reviews
- 1:04:35Ryan: Uh, I don't get corrupted.
- 1:04:37I- everyone thinks I get corrupted.
- 1:04:39It's a little bit sometimes, but I see the view.
- 1:04:42But, um, I'm gonna give this a 4.05, 4.25 out of 5.
- 1:04:50Jon: That's it?
- 1:04:53Ryan: it's not, uh
- 1:04:53Kearns: I guarantee you he would've gone higher after if you said five.
- 1:04:59You would've been like, "You know, I had like a four, seven, you
- 1:05:01know, it's a five. It's a five."
- 1:05:02Ryan: it's a 4.25.
- 1:05:04It's a really good zombie film.
- 1:05:05Uh, I was telling John that it's definitely out of my top five zombie
- 1:05:10films to watch besides the first George Romero trilogy and Return of Living Dead.
- 1:05:15I feel Train to Busan hits not only with the horror, the thrill,
- 1:05:19but there's emotion in it.
- 1:05:21And I feel like watching a lot of zombie films recently more, has
- 1:05:26to be this message that resonates with the audience besides zombies
- 1:05:32un-aliving everyone, this hits home.
- 1:05:35And it's just beautifully done.
- 1:05:37I mean, yeah, okay, puts his hand in the zombie's mouth.
- 1:05:41was his only way he thought he can save his daughter and, you know,
- 1:05:46the pregnant woman, you know?
- 1:05:47Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:48Ryan: Quick thinking.
- 1:05:50I- 4.25.
- 1:05:52I'm sticking with it
- 1:05:53Kearns: 4.75 on me.
- 1:05:55Uh, the, the
- 1:05:56Ryan: five
- 1:05:56Kearns: down, the, the, the .25 off is the hand thing.
- 1:06:01I get that Seok-woo needed to turn, but they could have done it better.
- 1:06:05That's all.
- 1:06:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:10Kearns: sticks out because it's a stain on an immaculate film.
- 1:06:14Uh,
- 1:06:14Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:15Kearns: I probably would've given it a five.
- 1:06:17It's not quite there to be like the blue star rating, but
- 1:06:20it's, I mean, it's so good.
- 1:06:23I was excited for the first time in a long time bef- like, Pans made me excited
- 1:06:27too, but, uh, to see this come up on the rotation, I was like, "Oh my God, I
- 1:06:31remember this movie," and just got excited 'cause I really enjoyed this movie.
- 1:06:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:36Kearns: The end.
- 1:06:37Jon: Yeah.
- 1:06:38And I, I'm right with you.
- 1:06:40This is a 4.75 for me.
- 1:06:42It's about as close to a five as you can get without getting a five,
- 1:06:47and it really is that one moment that keeps it from being a five.
- 1:06:53Any other way for Siact to get bit, I, I, I'm cool with.
- 1:06:58I can make that work.
- 1:07:00But to just, to do it that way sort of misses me a bit.
- 1:07:07But the rest of this is just as good as you can get for me
- 1:07:12Kearns: I mean
- 1:07:16It's like,
- 1:07:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:17Kearns: It's
- 1:07:18Jon: Yeah.
- 1:07:19Kearns: other option.
- 1:07:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:22Kearns: to go.
- 1:07:24Jon: Yep.
- 1:07:24Kearns: I digress
- 1:07:27Jon: But yeah, 4.75
- 1:07:29Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:07:30All right.
- 1:07:31guys, it is time for your top fives
- 1:07:37Ryan: Top fives.
- 1:07:37Top fives tonight I am going with top five foreign films, and we're gonna
- 1:07:42start it off, we're going to 1972 with a Spanish-Portuguese horror film.
- 1:07:47It's a film I should have never watched at a young age, but I watched it.
- 1:07:52I snuck in my uncle's closet, he had his horror films.
- 1:07:55in the VCR, and I got to see… Oh,
- 1:07:59Jon: movies
- 1:08:00Ryan: not the title.
- 1:08:01Yes, uh, there are boobies in Tombs of the Blind Dead.
- 1:08:05the background is it is that the legend has it that in a abandoned medieval town
- 1:08:10of Borzano, the Knights of Templar, a fictionalized version of the real-life
- 1:08:14order that was dissolved in the 14th century, leave their tombs at night and
- 1:08:18come back from the dead as revenants.
- 1:08:20Their reanimated corpses are blind because their eyes were pecked
- 1:08:24out by birds because witchcraft.
- 1:08:28But it's a great film.
- 1:08:29It's got a few sequels.
- 1:08:32If you love the medieval horror, it hits it right, and it's not
- 1:08:36a happy ending, which, you know.
- 1:08:40And that leads to my number four.
- 1:08:42My number four, we've talked about it before, and that's
- 1:08:44House by the Cemetery, 1981.
- 1:08:47I- released in America, but it is definitely a foreign film because it
- 1:08:51was produced in Italy, edited in Italy.
- 1:08:54So, it's a great film, too.
- 1:08:56The idea of being in house of a murderer basically, and then the murderer's
- 1:09:02still living after all these years.
- 1:09:04It's a slow build, but it hits the spot.
- 1:09:07And then we get to number three.
- 1:09:09We mentioned this, too, before.
- 1:09:11Cronos, Guillermo del Toro's first film outing.
- 1:09:18I thought you were gonna say something.
- 1:09:19What, Guillermo?
- 1:09:21Kearns: No, we're just gonna let you
- 1:09:21Jon: Guillermo.
- 1:09:22Kearns: We're, we're done, we're done mocking you
- 1:09:25Jon: Guillermo
- 1:09:25Kearns: Gr- great
- 1:09:27Ryan: Well, Gla- Glamour, the idea of a antique owner finding a scarab
- 1:09:31that allows you to live forever is just a brilliant idea of the vampire
- 1:09:36story in relation to Egyptian lore.
- 1:09:40And then we get to number two.
- 1:09:42I just saw this today for the first time, and that's Ju-On: The Grudge.
- 1:09:47If… Yeah, I'd never seen it before.
- 1:09:50Yeah.
- 1:09:51Yeah, I've never even seen the American version either.
- 1:09:53I avoided, av- I avoided all of that, and to be honest, I'm happy I did because
- 1:09:59the original one is where you have to go.
- 1:10:02Don't watch the American remakes.
- 1:10:04Go with the original one.
- 1:10:05I didn't even know The Ring was a Japanese remake until we talked about it.
- 1:10:09yeah, Japanese remake.
- 1:10:12But digress because number one is definitely something we need to cover.
- 1:10:17don't wanna get into it a lot because I don't wanna spoil it.
- 1:10:20It's called Cure.
- 1:10:23Uh, John recommended.
- 1:10:25Watched it, loved it.
- 1:10:26If you love Se7en, you're going into that world minus the gore
- 1:10:31because it's more of the psychology.
- 1:10:34The psych- psychological horror than the gore horror, and
- 1:10:37Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:37Ryan: all I'm gonna leave it at that.
- 1:10:39But those are my top five, uh, horror foreign films.
- 1:10:42And John, what's, up to you tonight, man?
- 1:10:45What's your top five?
- 1:10:47Jon: All right.
- 1:10:48So my top five is, winds up being more than a top five, but you'll
- 1:10:52understand as I go through it.
- 1:10:54Um, so my top five is really five more zombie movies where people are the
- 1:11:02bigger threat than the zombies are
- 1:11:05Kearns: Nice
- 1:11:06Ryan: Okay
- 1:11:12Jon: So my number five, we talked about episode three, so go back and listen.
- 1:11:15It's Overlord.
- 1:11:18And how can, a zombie style movie that has Nazis in it have the
- 1:11:24zombies be any worse than the Nazis?
- 1:11:27so the, survivors are worse than the zombies in this case, like, 'cause
- 1:11:33they're Nazis, and they're not only more dangerous, they're also creating the
- 1:11:38undead army that is causing the threat in an attempt to build a super soldier.
- 1:11:45small group of Americans on a secret mission stumble upon the
- 1:11:48experiment and must stop the Nazis.
- 1:11:52Go back and listen to episode three
- 1:11:56Kearns: Okay.
- 1:11:56Jon: and see what we, thought about Overlord.
- 1:11:59Kearns: Overlord
- 1:12:00Jon: f- absolutely
- 1:12:02Ryan: that's the one with our animated features too
- 1:12:05Kearns: Yes, sir
- 1:12:06Jon: Yep.
- 1:12:07My, number four is a remake, and it's a remake of Romero
- 1:12:17I'm going with the crazies.
- 1:12:19Kearns: Oh,
- 1:12:19Jon: The crazies, yep.
- 1:12:21so a toxin turns townspeople into flesh-starved monsters.
- 1:12:26Survivors a- attempt to band together and escape, but escape will not be easy as
- 1:12:31the military has set up a perimeter with instructions to shoot all citizens in
- 1:12:38this remake of a George Romero classic.
- 1:12:41so yeah, it's the military.
- 1:12:42The military, and generally when you see the military show up in
- 1:12:46a zombie movie, they are going to be worse than the zombies.
- 1:12:50See Day of the Dead
- 1:12:53Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:12:55It's on your shirt too
- 1:12:57Jon: Yeah, it is on my shirt.
- 1:12:59my number three, we're gonna go to Robert Rodriguez and his half of Grindhouse.
- 1:13:08And you get the double, you get the bad military guys, but
- 1:13:12you also get the bad doctor.
- 1:13:15so in Robert Rodriguez's half of Grindhouse, it's not just the
- 1:13:19military that puts survivors at risk, but also a deranged spouse.
- 1:13:25Dr. William Block is not willing to let his wife, Dr. Dakota Block,
- 1:13:30leave him, and go- goes to great and horrifying lengths to ensure that if he
- 1:13:38can't have her, no one will and here's where we get into more than one per.
- 1:13:45my number two, I'm g- we'll call it 28 Days Later, but it's the entire franchise.
- 1:13:51The people are just as bad as the zombies in 28 Days Later.
- 1:13:58It's the military again.
- 1:13:59so recurring theme in the entire franchise is the hell of other people.
- 1:14:05In the aftermath of a viral outbreak, survivors in England attempt to flee
- 1:14:10the city to a remote area that promises a safe haven, only to discover that
- 1:14:16the soldiers in charge are just as ravenous as the infected chasing them
- 1:14:24Ryan: Work
- 1:14:26Jon: And I think we can all guess where I'm going number one, because
- 1:14:32I can't do a list of anything related to zombies without George Romero.
- 1:14:37my number one is gonna be Dawn, but you can- Dawn of the Dead, but it can really
- 1:14:42be any of the Romero zombie movies, because there's always the underlying
- 1:14:47theme of how awful the other survivors is.
- 1:14:51And in Dawn, it's consistent, whether it's a TV producer ordering closed
- 1:14:58rescue stations to stay on the air, or a SWAT team member losing it
- 1:15:03in, losing it on a, on a apartment complex, to a marauding biker gang
- 1:15:10wrecking the sanctity of the mall.
- 1:15:13The survivors in Dawn are every bit as dangerous as the zombies, and you can
- 1:15:19say that about people in Night, you can say that about the military in Day, you
- 1:15:25can say it about Dennis Hopper in Land.
- 1:15:29It's the whole s- everything he did, people are, just as bad,
- 1:15:33and that's my top five this week
- 1:15:36Ryan: Now that was a twist.
- 1:15:37I thought you were gonna say Night of the Living Dead, uh, for the one character.
- 1:15:40Um, I'm forgetting his name, the father.
- 1:15:43Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:15:43Ryan: you were gonna go in that direction.
- 1:15:44But Don, no, Don was… You nail it right on the head.
- 1:15:48I feel like
- 1:15:48Jon: Super.
- 1:15:49Ryan: on, you
- 1:15:50Jon: Yeah.
- 1:15:51Ryan: with that, with a love society compared to day and
- 1:15:54Jon: yeah.
- 1:15:55Every ste- every step of the way in Dawn, it's the people
- 1:15:59Kearns: You can go so many ways with these movies.
- 1:16:01Like, we, we touched on that this one's really an eco-terror movie,
- 1:16:04but it's 100% also talks about, like, what types of people suck.
- 1:16:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:09Kearns: And Romero's movies are all have that deeper theme as well
- 1:16:14about people being the real problem.
- 1:16:16And, and most movies you watch,
- 1:16:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:20Kearns: screwed up by a guy or a gal
- 1:16:22Jon: Yeah.
- 1:16:24Kearns: You know,
- 1:16:25Jon: Yep.
- 1:16:25I think…
- 1:16:26Kearns: Later, it's the kids outside banging on the door, and they gotta
- 1:16:29Jon: Yep
- 1:16:30Kearns: I mean, we all probably would've done the same thing, but human error.
- 1:16:34Jon: Yep.
- 1:16:35And the, the f- the first bad dad we encountered
- 1:16:39Ryan: Yep.
- 1:16:41It's like one of the best, best scenes in…
- 1:16:44Kearns: Oh, it's so brutal.
- 1:16:45She gets hit sticked in the window and you're like, "Oh, no." And
- 1:16:48that's, that's William Wallace's wife.
- 1:16:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:16:52Kearns: gets taken out.
- 1:16:54Two movies that we've
- 1:16:55Jon: Yep
- 1:16:57Kearns: It's terrible.
- 1:16:58But anyway, guys, that was Train to Busan.
- 1:17:00We hope you enjoyed
- 1:17:01Ryan: uh, yep.
- 1:17:03Check it out, watch the film, watch the podcast, and don't take any trains
- 1:17:08Kearns: Or do,
- 1:17:09Jon: Or take them.
- 1:17:10Kearns: public transit, yeah.
- 1:17:11Jon: Yeah.
- 1:17:12Ryan: fifty
- 1:17:14Jon: See ya
