- 0:18Speaker 1: It is time to leave your worries outside and laugh
- 0:22Speaker 1: with us inside the Treehouse. I'm Daniel Malley, along with
- 0:26Speaker 1: Trey Trenholm and Raj Sharman, winding down on week two
- 0:35Speaker 1: of our shift to five days a week inside the Treehouse.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I don't love by you, but I sure him enjoying it.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and thanks.
- 0:45Speaker 1: For the enthusiasm of tray And I'm especially excited anytime
- 0:51Speaker 1: we get to start a show with something so abjectly stupid,
- 0:57Speaker 1: it actually makes me wait to present you guys with
- 1:02Speaker 1: something else stupid. So it's like a heavyweight fight of stupid,
- 1:11Speaker 1: kind of like Jake Paul just shadow boxing, and that
- 1:18Speaker 1: is this. So I don't know if it's going to
- 1:23Speaker 1: happen today or if it's going to happen tomorrow. Today
- 1:26Speaker 1: being Thursday, August twenty ninth, twenty twenty four. So I
- 1:31Speaker 1: don't know if the big stupid thing I had planned
- 1:34Speaker 1: for today is going to happen today or if it's
- 1:36Speaker 1: going to happen tomorrow. The reason why we have to
- 1:39Speaker 1: push it just a bit is because something so stupid
- 1:44Speaker 1: is because something stupid or pushed it down the list,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and that is the city of Dallas. It's kind of
- 1:58Speaker 1: like how the bat like signals batman if there's a
- 2:02Speaker 1: stupid light. The City of Dallas comes a running. I
- 2:07Speaker 1: say that because a city of Dallas is paying an
- 2:11Speaker 1: agency to help them find a new city manager, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: one of the ways in which they decided to advertise
- 2:20Speaker 1: the position is through a handy dandy brochure. And on
- 2:28Speaker 1: this eight page brochure for the city manager position, they
- 2:36Speaker 1: made sure to include not a photo of the skyline
- 2:40Speaker 1: of Dallas, No, they used Houston's. So the City of
- 2:49Speaker 1: Dallas and its infinite stupidity, has paid an agency one
- 2:53Speaker 1: hundred and thirty four thousand dollars to find a new
- 2:57Speaker 1: city manager. And one of the tools they were us
- 3:00Speaker 1: using to find this new city manager is a brochure.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And on the cover of this brochure is a photo
- 3:06Speaker 1: of the skyline of Houston, not Dallas.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Maybe that was just they were just appealing to the
- 3:16Speaker 3: first forty eight people that watch that show. Because when
- 3:19Speaker 3: when you sometimes you get lucky and you get that
- 3:21Speaker 3: back to back, like the same episode, it'd be like Dallas, Texas,
- 3:23Speaker 3: and then right after that it's like Harris County. So
- 3:25Speaker 3: sometimes it's just a I hate to say it bleed through.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Maybe that's what it was.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Well, I look at it as the possibility that this
- 3:37Speaker 1: is just a really good example of how badly Dallas
- 3:39Speaker 1: needs a new city manager. They can't even get the
- 3:42Speaker 1: skyline on the brochure.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Right in twenty twenty four, we're still doing brochures. Yeah,
- 3:52Speaker 4: because because seriously, you're talking about a tiny, tiny sliver
- 4:00Speaker 4: of of people that are qualified to be city manager
- 4:04Speaker 4: and and and where the city manager basically runs the city. Yes,
- 4:11Speaker 4: I would venture to say there's probably twenty people that
- 4:16Speaker 4: are really qualified to do it.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I could do it, you think so? Yeah?
- 4:23Speaker 3: H I could do it. I mean I've I've I've
- 4:25Speaker 3: worked in restaurants. How hard could it be? I mean
- 4:34Speaker 3: about the right eyeline on the brochure.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Imagine a city council made up of servers and bartenders.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Oh, I have. It would work so much, It would
- 4:45Speaker 3: be so much more efficient.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I for one, would be on board with compensating city
- 4:52Speaker 1: and ye hang on, let me think about this. Yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 1: I think it's fair to pay city council members through
- 4:59Speaker 1: tips and the minimum wage.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yeah, two thirteen an hour plus tips.
- 5:03Speaker 5: M h.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I think that's right. You'll see a lot of work
- 5:06Speaker 3: get done.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that right there would save a lot of money.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah. See, look what I've started. Look at this as
- 5:12Speaker 3: your new city manager. Look what I started. Now we're now,
- 5:16Speaker 3: we're we're we're working on tips. Now I like it. Things.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So, Raj, you think you could do the city manager
- 5:23Speaker 1: position for Dallas?
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah? What do you gotta do?
- 5:25Speaker 2: All right?
- 5:26Speaker 1: Lights on, let's find out. Let's scroll down in the
- 5:29Speaker 1: brochure below the photo of Houston into the essential functions
- 5:37Speaker 1: of the position of city manager for Dallas. Uh, let's
- 5:41Speaker 1: see here. Can you yep? Okay? Can you direct and
- 5:49Speaker 1: coordinate the administration of city government in accordance with policies
- 5:52Speaker 1: and priorities determined by the mayor and City Council?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Sure?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Okay. Can you supervise, through deputy and assistant city managers
- 6:02Speaker 1: and lower level executives, the activities, operations programs of diverse
- 6:06Speaker 1: city departments.
- 6:07Speaker 3: So basically that said, can you delegate authority? Yes, that's
- 6:12Speaker 3: also another way of going. Can you be lazy and
- 6:14Speaker 3: still keep your job?
- 6:15Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, it's government work.
- 6:18Speaker 3: I can do that.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Can you supervise, through the Chief Financial Officer the preparation
- 6:22Speaker 1: and presentation of the city's annual billion dollar budget.
- 6:26Speaker 3: Yeah, that means. What that's saying is I literally have
- 6:30Speaker 3: no control over what happens with the money at all.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And since you're supervising through the CFO the preparation and
- 6:38Speaker 1: presentation of the city's budget, you're just taking credit for
- 6:43Speaker 1: someone else's work.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, definitely, Okay, you can do that.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Can you coordinate activities with the mayor and City Council
- 6:51Speaker 1: to provide systemic efforts in serving the residents so.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Like a bake sale?
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yes, okay. Can you implement mayor and city count to
- 7:00Speaker 1: policies and long and short range plans for city government
- 7:02Speaker 1: to improve efficiency of operations and number and kind of
- 7:05Speaker 1: services provided to citizens?
- 7:07Speaker 3: Can I put the right skyline on the right brochure? Yes?
- 7:11Speaker 1: Can you represent the City of Dallas at conferences at
- 7:14Speaker 1: the local, state, and national.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Level, Oh, you bet your ass.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And finally, can you cultivate cooperative partnerships with other public
- 7:24Speaker 1: and private organizations to access resources and improve the efficiency
- 7:27Speaker 1: of service delivery?
- 7:29Speaker 3: That means, uh, can I take bribes and give them
- 7:32Speaker 3: a lug up? Yep, couldn't do that.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Gotta be careful though, because Dallas County commissioner's courts got
- 7:40Speaker 1: their hands pretty deep in that pocket. So you got
- 7:42Speaker 1: to make sure, you know, I.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Got grease a lot of wheels.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you got to make sure you increase the right
- 7:47Speaker 1: poems there.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I can, I can. This sounds this sounds like
- 7:51Speaker 3: this job was made for me.
- 7:53Speaker 1: It's kind of a dream job, right, Yeah.
- 7:56Speaker 3: What does it pay.
- 7:58Speaker 1: A lot?
- 7:59Speaker 3: Oh?
- 8:00Speaker 1: Okay, I forget how much TC Broadnax was making before
- 8:05Speaker 1: he left. That was the city manager before that left
- 8:09Speaker 1: to go to Austin.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I always wonder what he did after magnum p I.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Uh, he did Magnum p I, then ran the city
- 8:22Speaker 1: of Dallas, and now he's running the city of Austin.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, oh that's that's that's turning out really well. I hear.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Well. I mean it beats the hell out of the
- 8:31Speaker 1: you know, the autograph circuit. And at least as a
- 8:37Speaker 1: city manager he can still fly around in a helicopter.
- 8:40Speaker 3: He flies himself, so he can pay himself twice there
- 8:42Speaker 3: you go. Okay, And what's his last name, TC.
- 8:45Speaker 1: What broad Knacks?
- 8:46Speaker 3: Yeah, oh what they said brought Snacks. I was like,
- 8:48Speaker 3: that's a great name.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Well, that's another aspect of the position. That they would
- 8:53Speaker 1: expect you to do, because when you go to city
- 8:57Speaker 1: council meetings, you're expected to bring snacks.
- 9:02Speaker 3: What is the pay? How much does the city manager make?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Do we have a ballpark? Like half a mill?
- 9:09Speaker 1: It's it's six figures, I know that. I'm not sure
- 9:11Speaker 1: if it's quite half a mill. It's going to be in.
- 9:14Speaker 2: That around three I'm I'm out.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Oh is that is that not enough for you?
- 9:20Speaker 3: I mean three twenty five before bribes. I think I
- 9:24Speaker 3: can make it to half a mil. I think I
- 9:26Speaker 3: can do that.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I think you can squeak by.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I'm looking out for the three of us. Dan, It's
- 9:33Speaker 3: not just I'm not. It's okay. Now, I'll be the face,
- 9:38Speaker 3: but like you will be the decision makers. Like when hey,
- 9:41Speaker 3: so and so wants to pay us X amount of money,
- 9:43Speaker 3: should we take it? And they will be like, no,
- 9:45Speaker 3: ask so and so if they want to give us
- 9:47Speaker 3: a little bit more over here, and we'll do that.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I'll see. And then and then Tray slides in and
- 9:51Speaker 3: gives them drinks and we get them all little loosey goosey,
- 9:53Speaker 3: and then we get a little more money. You gotta
- 9:55Speaker 3: think long term.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah, this actually does sound exactly like government.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Work and only one of us will go to prison.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Well, now it sounds like radio lucky. If you're you,
- 10:10Speaker 1: we have experience in both.
- 10:17Speaker 6: You're listening to the Treehouse. Visit us online at Treehouse
- 10:21Speaker 6: on Air dot com.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Let's get Daniel Cook into the Treehouse now. His number
- 10:31Speaker 1: to call is A three three COOKDFW the website cookdfw
- 10:35Speaker 1: dot com. It's kind of a combination of things in
- 10:37Speaker 1: your business, Daniel, because it's COOKDFW, roofing and restoration, and
- 10:41Speaker 1: included in that is remodeling. So you get some people
- 10:44Speaker 1: calling you saying, hey, man, I would really love to
- 10:47Speaker 1: do a new bathroom or redo my kitchen. What's what's
- 10:51Speaker 1: the remodeling project that you're working on right now that
- 10:53Speaker 1: you're into.
- 10:54Speaker 7: Dan, I actually got one better in that, man. We're
- 10:56Speaker 7: going to hit the trifecta. Are you ready?
- 10:58Speaker 2: Yep?
- 10:59Speaker 7: High winds may came through eighty miles an hour, knocked
- 11:02Speaker 7: the guy's chimney off of his house from the wind
- 11:07Speaker 7: being so piercing with the patio cover allowed rain for
- 11:11Speaker 7: four hours to rain inside the huge gaping hole inside
- 11:14Speaker 7: of his attic, which then, of course caused his sheet
- 11:17Speaker 7: rock on the ceiling to fall in, which then caused
- 11:20Speaker 7: his wooden floors to swell, which then caused all the
- 11:23Speaker 7: sheet rock obviously to have problems. So now it's taken
- 11:27Speaker 7: us a while. It's August. We had to get State
- 11:30Speaker 7: Farm out there. They weren't able to get out there
- 11:32Speaker 7: right away, so we tarped, prevented more moisture from building inside,
- 11:35Speaker 7: the house cleaned up, got the water dried out, got
- 11:37Speaker 7: to preventive measures to try to stop any more, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 7: problems from this home. But then we have been discussing
- 11:43Speaker 7: what the home actually needs with insurance now for almost
- 11:46Speaker 7: three months. We just now got it cleared up that
- 11:49Speaker 7: they agreed with us. Finally, after three visits with different adjusters,
- 11:53Speaker 7: different desk people, we actually got the whole roof approved
- 11:57Speaker 7: for replacement. His car part, his garage door that got
- 12:01Speaker 7: ruined with some debris, his whole interior, his insulation in
- 12:05Speaker 7: his attic needs to be replaced because it had a
- 12:07Speaker 7: whole bunch of moisture and mildew on it probably is
- 12:10Speaker 7: sheet rock. His wood were four repairs, all of his stuff,
- 12:14Speaker 7: and then that in turn his wife, we're sitting at
- 12:16Speaker 7: the dining room table, she goes you know what, this
- 12:17Speaker 7: happens all the time. I haven't liked that tile in
- 12:20Speaker 7: that thing. If we're already going over here to do
- 12:22Speaker 7: this for how much more were to come over here?
- 12:24Speaker 7: So now, unfortunately the husband doesn't like it, but they're
- 12:28Speaker 7: getting a they're getting a house remodel and he's not
- 12:31Speaker 7: ready for but he's getting one. And you know, the
- 12:33Speaker 7: good news is, and there is a silver lining here,
- 12:36Speaker 7: even though it's a traumatic event, they're getting a house
- 12:39Speaker 7: remodel for pennies.
- 12:41Speaker 2: On the dollar.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And that's what Daniel Cook at Cook DFW Roofing and
- 12:45Speaker 1: Restoration can do for you as well. Give the man
- 12:47Speaker 1: a call eight three to three cook DFW the website
- 12:49Speaker 1: cookdfw dot com.
- 12:56Speaker 5: You're in the Treehouse listen us online treups on air
- 13:01Speaker 5: dot com.
- 13:03Speaker 1: This segment of the tree House is brought to you
- 13:07Speaker 1: by COOKDFW Roofing and Restoration called Daniel Cook at eight
- 13:11Speaker 1: three three cook DFW for your free roof inspection as
- 13:15Speaker 1: well as to get yourself on the cook list eight
- 13:18Speaker 1: three three cook DFW The website cookdfw dot com. What
- 13:23Speaker 1: is it tray? You get a look on your face?
- 13:25Speaker 2: No, okay.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I've also learned over the years, raj that when Trey
- 13:30Speaker 1: responds by saying nothing that's gospel, you just take it
- 13:34Speaker 1: as nothing and you move the f on going back
- 13:37Speaker 1: to the City of Dallas trying to find a new
- 13:41Speaker 1: city manager by posting by putting together a brochure from
- 13:45Speaker 1: an agency and them using the city of Houston skyline
- 13:51Speaker 1: instead of Dallas. The sad thing about this is how
- 13:57Speaker 1: long it actually took for city count members to realize
- 14:02Speaker 1: in a public meeting that this was, in fact not
- 14:05Speaker 1: the city of Dallas that they were looking at in
- 14:08Speaker 1: the brochure. NBC News coverage of the meeting showed the
- 14:13Speaker 1: committee's less than enthusiastic reactions to the brochure. Unsurprisingly, their
- 14:21Speaker 1: first concern regarded the cover photo because it was Houston,
- 14:23Speaker 1: not Dallas, but it took a few minutes of discussion
- 14:26Speaker 1: to identify what exactly was wrong with it. They didn't
- 14:30Speaker 1: know immediately. District twelve council member Karen Mendelssohn said, I'm
- 14:35Speaker 1: just gonna say, first off, I hate this photo. I
- 14:37Speaker 1: don't think it's representative of Dallas. It's not because it's
- 14:41Speaker 1: not Dallas, And she said, and I had to look
- 14:44Speaker 1: at it for quite a few minutes before I realized
- 14:47Speaker 1: it was actually the city. She would soon learn her
- 14:51Speaker 1: instincts were correct. The featured skyline was in fact not Dallas,
- 14:55Speaker 1: it was Houston. Jesse Marino from District Too said to
- 15:00Speaker 1: this looks old and dated. Wow, we have one of
- 15:04Speaker 1: the best skylines in the country, and I think we
- 15:06Speaker 1: need to be able to highlight that.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Dallas actually has an incredibly distinctive skyline.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And yeah, they didn't notice that right off the bat.
- 15:19Speaker 1: It's just man, you would think they would. It seems
- 15:22Speaker 1: pretty easy.
- 15:24Speaker 3: But look for the just look for the green building
- 15:26Speaker 3: though with the green k neeon. If you don't see
- 15:28Speaker 3: that one, it's not it's not.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Dallas or Reunion Tower, yeah, or the Pegasus, I mean,
- 15:34Speaker 1: any of the things. But they actually So this all
- 15:39Speaker 1: happened on an on the ad hoc Committee on Administrative Affairs,
- 15:42Speaker 1: So it was five Dallas City Council members. They met
- 15:45Speaker 1: with representatives of Baker Tilley, the agency putting together the
- 15:51Speaker 1: package to lure a new city manager, which basically, maybe
- 15:55Speaker 1: this is just a really creative campaign on the part
- 15:58Speaker 1: of this agency to show how how badly Dallas needs
- 16:01Speaker 1: a new city manager. So maybe they planned it this way.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Okay, I like it, yeah, kind of pushing through, like hey,
- 16:09Speaker 3: if you didn't notice that, the city manager would have
- 16:12Speaker 3: I like it. I like a little passive aggressive. Oh yeah,
- 16:15Speaker 3: I like this agency. As city manager, I will use them.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Why didn't they just most you know, Fortune five hundred companies,
- 16:27Speaker 4: Most cities would use a head hunting service.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Hey, yeah, not the city of Dallas. They're gonna spend
- 16:34Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty four thousand dollars on this agency
- 16:37Speaker 1: to put together a brochure with the wrong city.
- 16:39Speaker 3: You never underestimate the power of a brochure.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Never underestimate the power of the City of Dallas to
- 16:46Speaker 1: waste money. I present to you Exhibit B into evidence
- 16:52Speaker 1: on wasting money in the City of Dallas. And that
- 16:55Speaker 1: is the story of Jabbari the Gorilla, all the way
- 16:59Speaker 1: back in March of two two thousand and four. This
- 17:04Speaker 1: was a story of rage and bullets and mystery at
- 17:13Speaker 1: the Dallas Zoo because in March of two thousand and four,
- 17:17Speaker 1: Jabari the Gorilla somehow got out of his enclosure and
- 17:21Speaker 1: for forty minutes terrorized zoo goers until he was taken
- 17:28Speaker 1: down by a swat officer's bullet. Over the next three months,
- 17:35Speaker 1: the city of Dallas spent hundreds of thousands of dollars
- 17:39Speaker 1: on an investigation to find out how did Jabbari get out?
- 17:44Speaker 1: And at the end of three months and hundreds of
- 17:48Speaker 1: thousands of dollars in taxpayer money, you know what they
- 17:52Speaker 1: found He took a running jump.
- 17:58Speaker 3: I was going to say he had a key.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I wasn't at the recommendation though, the higher fence and
- 18:05Speaker 4: the recommendation.
- 18:06Speaker 1: So that was a two It was a two pronged report.
- 18:10Speaker 2: How did it happen, how to prevent it, how to
- 18:12Speaker 2: have it?
- 18:12Speaker 1: Yeah, the first prong got to find out how did
- 18:15Speaker 1: Jabari get out? Well, they found out. They found out
- 18:17Speaker 1: that he just took a running He got a running
- 18:19Speaker 1: start is what they found out. And he jumped over
- 18:21Speaker 1: his fence. That's okay, the how they got that part
- 18:23Speaker 1: figured out. Then then the second part, as Trey mentioned,
- 18:25Speaker 1: was okay, how do we prevent it? What make the
- 18:29Speaker 1: make the make the fence higher, and give us our
- 18:33Speaker 1: six hundred thousand dollars. It really was one of the
- 18:37Speaker 1: great all time UH takes. And they did it, and
- 18:41Speaker 1: it's like this is like a heist, but The beauty
- 18:43Speaker 1: of stealing stuff from the city of Dallas is you
- 18:46Speaker 1: don't have to do it under the cover of darkness.
- 18:49Speaker 1: You don't have to do it with some sort of
- 18:51Speaker 1: seed underbelly happenings and goings on. Now you can just do
- 18:55Speaker 1: it the middle of the day and tell him I'll
- 18:56Speaker 1: write your report, give me half a million dollars, and
- 18:59Speaker 1: I'll all this stuff out for you, and then they
- 19:01Speaker 1: pay you.
- 19:05Speaker 3: It's also this was the Dallas Zoo, correct, that's Do
- 19:09Speaker 3: you expect more in depth report from the Dallas Zoo.
- 19:14Speaker 1: No, you're right, it actually it does track. I mean
- 19:18Speaker 1: we're talking about a zoo that has a prominent statue
- 19:23Speaker 1: out on you know, outside on I thirty five at
- 19:28Speaker 1: the entrance of a giraffe. I don't know what it's doing.
- 19:34Speaker 1: It looks like it's trying to lick the air. I
- 19:36Speaker 1: just assume it's screaming for help.
- 19:40Speaker 3: I have asked what the I have asked what the.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Giraffe is doing, and what did it tell you it's.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Supposed to be. How they eat leaves off of a
- 19:48Speaker 3: tree is they stick their tongue out and they grab
- 19:51Speaker 3: the leaf with their tongue and pull the Yeah, but
- 19:55Speaker 3: there's no tree, right. See.
- 19:56Speaker 1: That would make sense if there was a really tall
- 19:59Speaker 1: tree next to that statue of the giraffe, or.
- 20:02Speaker 3: An even taller giraffe or that too.
- 20:05Speaker 1: But like a lot of things in that area of town,
- 20:08Speaker 1: it seems to have gone missing mysteriously.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't expect for anything like I wouldn't expect
- 20:20Speaker 3: like a big book, like a one hundred and fifty page,
- 20:23Speaker 3: three hundred and fifty page report on what happened that day.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I just I would expect a brochure, you know what.
- 20:32Speaker 1: You'd never hear about problems like this coming out of
- 20:35Speaker 1: the Fort Worth.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Zoo, No or San Diego.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Actually they called an expert from the San Diego Zoo
- 20:42Speaker 1: into take part in this investigation into Jabbari's escape from
- 20:47Speaker 1: the Dallas Zoo.
- 20:47Speaker 3: And I see now in my head it's just the
- 20:50Speaker 3: guy from San Diego Zoo, just like eating a frozen banana,
- 20:53Speaker 3: go and got a running start and then he just
- 20:56Speaker 3: walks off.
- 20:59Speaker 1: That's probably a new a new dramatic series on ABC
- 21:02Speaker 1: this fall zero or or they go the opposite direction,
- 21:11Speaker 1: they go more slapstick, and it's just like a sitcom
- 21:13Speaker 1: with Jack Hannah. I would watch this and it's just
- 21:19Speaker 1: him just wrestling with gorillas.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Uh yeah, so they So the end the result was
- 21:26Speaker 3: higher fence. Did they build a higher fence?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, they increased the fence by three feet and added
- 21:31Speaker 1: a stronger shocking wire at the top.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't know there was shocking wires at the
- 21:36Speaker 3: top to begin with.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Well, there were, but he jumped over him the first time.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It also said it was a mild shock. I'm not
- 21:43Speaker 1: sure what a mild shock to a gorilla is.
- 21:45Speaker 6: But.
- 21:46Speaker 4: If memory serves They also they they weren't trimming the
- 21:51Speaker 4: like the shrubbery around the electric fence, so it it
- 21:56Speaker 4: was kind of grounded.
- 21:57Speaker 3: That's right, hilarious.
- 21:59Speaker 2: So that, yeah, keep keep branches away from electric fence.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Was that the third pronc? Yeah, sub section of it's
- 22:08Speaker 3: too prong, but subsection A also branches.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Yeah, landscaping.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Tell me that's not one of the stupidest things you've
- 22:19Speaker 1: heard all week.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I was gone for this, like I think
- 22:23Speaker 3: I was. I think I was already.
- 22:25Speaker 2: What year was this?
- 22:26Speaker 1: That was two thousand and four?
- 22:27Speaker 3: Oh no, then I was here.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Yeah, you were here for that, you were here for this.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I don't so the City of Dallas is keeping up
- 22:33Speaker 1: with its long held tradition of stupid, and it turns
- 22:37Speaker 1: out that when it comes to being shocked by electricity
- 22:43Speaker 1: and doing things stupid, the city of Garland does not
- 22:46Speaker 1: want to be left out.
- 22:58Speaker 6: You listening to the Treehouse, visit us online that Treehouse
- 23:02Speaker 6: on air dot com.

- 23:19Speaker 1: website Brooks Plumbingtexas dot com. When I had my house
- 23:22Speaker 1: in Dallas, Jacqueline, you came out a few times to
- 23:25Speaker 1: help us with some issues and your response time was phenomenal.
- 23:29Speaker 1: And it wasn't just because it was me. It was
- 23:31Speaker 1: because that's the kind of company you run. You go
- 23:34Speaker 1: out of your way trying to help every client and
- 23:37Speaker 1: try to get there as soon as you can.
- 23:38Speaker 8: Well, I mean the reality of it is is that
- 23:41Speaker 8: plumbing is unfortunately a need and not so much a want. Yes,
- 23:44Speaker 8: you can want to remodel the bathroom and that's not pressing,
- 23:48Speaker 8: but typically when it comes to service or leak investigations,
- 23:52Speaker 8: et cetera, et cetera.
- 23:53Speaker 2: If you've got to stoppage.
- 23:54Speaker 8: On the mainline and you don't know, and you keep
- 23:58Speaker 8: putting liquid or you know, waste into the drains, if
- 24:03Speaker 8: it has nowhere to go, it will come back in
- 24:05Speaker 8: the house. And at that point in time, it's no
- 24:08Speaker 8: longer a want, it's a need, and that sort of
- 24:11Speaker 8: thing can't wait. When you have those emergencies, you have
- 24:15Speaker 8: got to figure out how to manage the crew so
- 24:18Speaker 8: that you can have the best response time.
- 24:20Speaker 1: That's right, and they'll show up and they'll do it quickly.

- 24:56Speaker 1: your plumbing wants and needs. Brooks Plumbing, thank you very much.
- 25:01Speaker 1: City of Dallas is running them up with its stupidity,
- 25:03Speaker 1: and as I mentioned, going into that break, the city
- 25:06Speaker 1: of Garland is looking over and going, well, hey, we
- 25:09Speaker 1: want some of that. So I don't know if you
- 25:14Speaker 1: guys saw this the other day, but copper thieves are
- 25:21Speaker 1: now targeting power lines. I don't know if copper thieves
- 25:28Speaker 1: targeting power lines. I don't know if I've ever said
- 25:32Speaker 1: five words in the same sentence together like that that
- 25:35Speaker 1: added up to so much stupid in so few words.
- 25:38Speaker 3: M hm.
- 25:40Speaker 4: And I yes, Tray, I thought they had been doing
- 25:43Speaker 4: that for years. We've read stories over the years of
- 25:45Speaker 4: them frying themselves.
- 25:48Speaker 1: For some reason I didn't remember. Maybe I went on
- 25:50Speaker 1: a copper scavenger hunter shooting.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Maybe it's you know, what's old is new again and
- 25:57Speaker 4: they've forgotten a good ten fifteen years ago that.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Yeah, vintage thievery.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you're right, Just these things are cyclical. I mean, look,
- 26:08Speaker 1: we got fashion trends now. Things you know that were
- 26:13Speaker 1: hip when we were in school are hip again. So
- 26:17Speaker 1: you know, maybe you're right, Ray, Maybe it is it's
- 26:20Speaker 1: thievery is also cyclical.
- 26:21Speaker 2: I mean, and you know, stupid and cyclical.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I mean, it's like mullets both have come back.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Yeah, And it's.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Funny you mentioned mullets because I think in this video
- 26:32Speaker 1: report that we're about to watch from Channel eight, there
- 26:36Speaker 1: might be a couple of mullets in here. So here
- 26:40Speaker 1: we have from w FAA copper thieves running amok in Garland.
- 26:49Speaker 9: There we begin today with the new warning thieves going
- 26:51Speaker 9: to great lens to steal copper wire, not only impacting
- 26:55Speaker 9: service to some neighborhoods, but putting their own lives at risk.
- 26:58Speaker 10: You believe that tonight WFA.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yes, I can nathy.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Heroin is powerful.
- 27:07Speaker 8: Leave that tonight WFAS Teresa Woodard has a new plea
- 27:11Speaker 8: from police that if you see something, say something.
- 27:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna pause that briefly just to say I understand
- 27:17Speaker 1: that the police want you to say something if you
- 27:20Speaker 1: see something. But if I see a couple of dudes
- 27:21Speaker 1: trying to steal a copper out of a power line,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna see it. I'm not gonna say anything. I'm
- 27:27Speaker 1: just gonna pull up a lawn chair and watch.
- 27:30Speaker 3: If you see something, giggle, pull out.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Your phone and hit recording exactly because it's about to
- 27:38Speaker 1: get good.
- 27:39Speaker 9: And these criminals, they don't care about anything other than themselves.
- 27:43Speaker 10: Bold, brazen, that's one way to describe it, but it
- 27:47Speaker 10: is dangerous.
- 27:48Speaker 1: They're showing this guy, he's just got a long pole
- 27:51Speaker 1: that looks to be metal and he's just pulling the
- 27:53Speaker 1: power line down off the pole.
- 27:55Speaker 3: How's the car moving?
- 28:00Speaker 4: They don't care about anyone but themselves. Did you think
- 28:05Speaker 4: they were robin hood?
- 28:10Speaker 3: They're robbin from the hood.
- 28:12Speaker 2: You don't know their attentions.
- 28:15Speaker 3: They still copper and give it to the poor.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Yeah, there could be a sick child benefitting this.
- 28:21Speaker 1: They may have hearts of gold or teeth, even though
- 28:28Speaker 1: gold doesn't doesn't exactly you know, move electricity as good
- 28:32Speaker 1: as copper does. But sound sound, sound waves really good
- 28:35Speaker 1: with gold.
- 28:38Speaker 10: Julie Deadly Garland Police shared these images of a sudden
- 28:42Speaker 10: surge in copper thieves, going, that's my favorite.
- 28:46Speaker 1: I went back this up just a haird So this
- 28:47Speaker 1: guy's on in an alleyway on a ladder up against
- 28:51Speaker 1: a power pole with a buddy helping him. You notice
- 28:54Speaker 1: the tool he has in his hand.
- 28:55Speaker 10: Sudden serch.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Is it just me or does that look like a
- 28:59Speaker 1: hack saw.
- 29:00Speaker 3: That is a hacksaw. Wow. That is.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Because of all the tools you could possibly use to
- 29:09Speaker 1: cut down a power line, let's pull out the old
- 29:12Speaker 1: trusty metal hacksaw.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I like how, I like how you think these guys
- 29:16Speaker 3: are using their brain.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I never said that. I never said they were using
- 29:21Speaker 1: their brains. I am wondering, though, how did they miss
- 29:25Speaker 1: all the Louis the Lightning Bug PSAs as kids.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Yes, you're assuming they came from good homes.
- 29:35Speaker 1: That stuff was on the Louis the Lightning Bug that
- 29:37Speaker 1: was every Saturday Sunday morning during kids programming. It would
- 29:41Speaker 1: be like the Louis the Lightning Bug public service announcement
- 29:46Speaker 1: would come on in between segments of Sesame Street or
- 29:49Speaker 1: The Muppet Show.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, or and this may be more to the point.
- 29:54Speaker 4: How did they not spend more time watching the bug
- 29:56Speaker 4: zapper in the living room?
- 29:59Speaker 1: Maybe the that was the problem. That's where they got
- 30:02Speaker 1: the idea.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Hard to watch TV when it's in the pawn shop, Dan.
- 30:10Speaker 1: You're watching it, you just can't hear all the important information.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Because I guess you're right. If you're just watching the
- 30:16Speaker 1: TV from outside, you don't hear all the important information
- 30:21Speaker 1: that Louis the lightning bug is sharing. He just looks
- 30:24Speaker 1: like he's at a rave.
- 30:26Speaker 3: He looks like he's stealing copper.
- 30:31Speaker 10: Urge in copper thieves going to great height.
- 30:34Speaker 1: I think this is my favorite, though. The guy that's
- 30:36Speaker 1: actually sitting on power lines trying to get copper out
- 30:40Speaker 1: of the power lines.
- 30:43Speaker 3: He's just channeling his inner squirrel.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Gonna be a crispy squirrel.
- 30:52Speaker 9: These cables at are twenty thirty feet above their head.
- 30:55Speaker 9: If they cut the wrong cable, they.
- 30:57Speaker 10: Could likely doe to steal utility.
- 31:00Speaker 9: And they're doing it in broad daylight in front of
- 31:02Speaker 9: the public.
- 31:03Speaker 1: That's a Garland police officer.
- 31:05Speaker 10: That's a new wire up there, because this intersection got
- 31:08Speaker 10: hit just a couple of weeks ago. Police say it
- 31:10Speaker 10: was six o'clock on a Wednesday night when summer, and
- 31:13Speaker 10: it just.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Sounds weird to say six o'clock on a Wednesday night,
- 31:16Speaker 1: as if the sun was down. I mean, at six
- 31:19Speaker 1: o'clock in summer North Texas, the sun it's still hot
- 31:22Speaker 1: as hell, it's super bright. So yeah, they are doing
- 31:24Speaker 1: it in the middle of the day.
- 31:27Speaker 10: One parked a U haul trailer out here and blocked
- 31:29Speaker 10: the lane of traffic. They were loading that U haul
- 31:32Speaker 10: with the stolen copper cable from up there.
- 31:34Speaker 11: They got caught after a police pursuit. Stop stealing stuff
- 31:39Speaker 11: that doesn't belong to you.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Yes, yes, there she is. I was wondering.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Ah, you know, whenever you go into a neighborhood and
- 31:48Speaker 1: you see the sign that says neighborhood watch, Yeah, it's
- 31:52Speaker 1: this lady's it's this lady's silhouette that you see on
- 31:55Speaker 1: that sign.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Because stealing things that did belong to you it would
- 32:00Speaker 4: be rather fruitless.
- 32:10Speaker 3: I think that's just called hide and seek.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Maybe that's their logic. Well, you know, like the guys
- 32:19Speaker 1: that got arrested by Garland police when they stole that
- 32:23Speaker 1: power line cable with the copper in it, and they
- 32:26Speaker 1: tried telling those guys you can't do that. You stole that.
- 32:29Speaker 1: It's like, well, it's mine now, so it's not stealing
- 32:31Speaker 1: if it's mine.
- 32:34Speaker 3: I can't steal what belongs to me.
- 32:36Speaker 4: I think this is a new PSA campaign, steal your
- 32:39Speaker 4: own stuff.
- 32:48Speaker 3: I like the idea of stealing from yourself.
- 32:51Speaker 1: And if we're being honest, if there's any city in
- 32:54Speaker 1: North Texas where that PSA would actually get approval and
- 32:58Speaker 1: run everywhere. It's from Garland. The city of Garland welcomes
- 33:02Speaker 1: you and remind you to you know, only steal your own.
- 33:08Speaker 3: That's the Garland motto, stealing your own stuff.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I like it.
- 33:12Speaker 3: You know it's bad when people in Mosquito are like
- 33:14Speaker 3: that bitch is dumb.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Even sunny veils looking down on them.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Don't even get me started on Saxy.
- 33:32Speaker 10: Stealing stuff that doesn't belong to you.
- 33:35Speaker 1: That woman and her infinite wisdom.
- 33:37Speaker 11: And must hear it again, stop stealing stuff that doesn't
- 33:42Speaker 11: belong to you.
- 33:43Speaker 10: This woman lives in northwest Dallas.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I just realized they actually blurred her face. Do they
- 33:50Speaker 1: think they're that they're trying to protect her? Are they
- 33:53Speaker 1: trying to keep her anonymous? No?
- 33:55Speaker 3: I think the camera was embarrassed. The camera was trying
- 34:02Speaker 3: to blur itself, like I don't want to be here.
- 34:05Speaker 1: The cameras from Garland, I'm sorry. The cameras from Mesquite.
- 34:12Speaker 3: I love the idea this is. That's such great old
- 34:14Speaker 3: white lady logic. Well, stop stealing stuff that doesn't belong
- 34:18Speaker 3: to you.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Yes, she expects it to work.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Oh that's so great.
- 34:26Speaker 1: All right, let me finish.
- 34:27Speaker 10: Those stealing stuff that doesn't belong to you. This woman
- 34:32Speaker 10: lives in northwest Dallas. Her neighborhood's been hit. The thieves
- 34:35Speaker 10: are back multiple times. It's happened in Fort Worth, Arlington.
- 34:40Speaker 10: This video came from a man who lives in southern
- 34:42Speaker 10: Dallas's Redbird neighborhood. That's another suspect posing as a worker.
- 34:48Speaker 1: So I'm starting to think and posing as a worker,
- 34:50Speaker 1: meaning he's wearing a neon vest. I've seen those vests
- 34:53Speaker 1: at Walmart. Maybe we're at the point in time where
- 34:56Speaker 1: we've got to start, you know, showing ID for those vests.
- 35:02Speaker 1: You have to put those in the section next to
- 35:03Speaker 1: the spray paints.
- 35:07Speaker 3: It's Walmart. I don't think you don't have to show
- 35:10Speaker 3: ID for a shotgun. I don't think they're not.
- 35:12Speaker 1: They put the baby formula in a locked box.
- 35:17Speaker 3: Yes, I understand that, but we're going back to shotgun.
- 35:22Speaker 3: You don't have to show an ID for a shotgun.
- 35:24Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure they're gonna give you. See if you
- 35:26Speaker 3: just have the vest, and if they went into the
- 35:27Speaker 3: school supplying section and just got a clipboard and.
- 35:31Speaker 1: No, oh yeah, I'm a firm believer and I've seen
- 35:33Speaker 1: it with my own eyes. You can accomplish many things
- 35:36Speaker 1: with a clipboard, Yes you can.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Nobody thinks Nobody thinks ahead, like, hey, I've got the
- 35:41Speaker 3: vest I have to steal copper. What would keep me
- 35:45Speaker 3: from looking like a suspect? Clipboard pencil pen behind the
- 35:49Speaker 3: ear m official.
- 35:52Speaker 10: Each crime leaves customers without internet and cost providers thousands
- 35:57Speaker 10: of dollars.
- 35:57Speaker 9: This is not one huge we're gonna holding on a
- 36:00Speaker 9: crime syndicate. This is individual people, community starts of crimes,
- 36:03Speaker 9: and they're doing it right in front of us.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Say it, lieutenant, say what you mean these This is
- 36:07Speaker 1: not some organized crime syndicate. These are individual idiots with
- 36:13Speaker 1: really big scissors, climbing power poles and trying to hit
- 36:16Speaker 1: a payday.
- 36:17Speaker 3: I would love to see this crime syndicate. I would
- 36:20Speaker 3: love to. I would love to sit in on on
- 36:25Speaker 3: their crime meetings. Like there's a like it's the mafia,
- 36:28Speaker 3: Like there's like there's the dawn and the crime meeting. Yes,
- 36:34Speaker 3: they have to have meetings.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Is that is that across tray? Are there are those
- 36:38Speaker 1: meetings across the hall from your alcoholics anonymous.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Meetings the copper syndicate. Do some people shift between meetings?
- 36:49Speaker 4: The throne is a twenty year old lazy Boy.

- 37:56Speaker 1: really like, share with a friend. We appreciate that. And
- 37:59Speaker 1: now we got a chance to hear a little bit
- 38:04Speaker 1: of that. I believe it was lieutenant with the Garland
- 38:08Speaker 1: Police Department talking about how this is not an organized
- 38:11Speaker 1: crime syndicate going after the copper inside the power lines,
- 38:16Speaker 1: but works of individuals, Okay, And it's always great to
- 38:22Speaker 1: see when a community rallies around its police in the
- 38:29Speaker 1: name of public safety. And I cannot think of a
- 38:33Speaker 1: better example that I've seen of that recently than this
- 38:38Speaker 1: one in which in Oxford, Mississippi, the police were flooded
- 38:46Speaker 1: with offers to help after a truck spilled cases of
- 38:51Speaker 1: beer in the in the college town.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Yep, that sounds about right.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Yeah, police flooded with offers of help after truck spills
- 39:03Speaker 1: cases of beer in college town. That college town, of course,
- 39:05Speaker 1: being Oxford, Mississippi.
- 39:10Speaker 3: I ever wonder when you heard a red back go,
- 39:11Speaker 3: I went to Oxford, That's where That's where they went.
- 39:15Speaker 1: In the photos shared by the police department on Facebook,
- 39:18Speaker 1: cases of Natural Light bud Light Corona, michelob Alter, and
- 39:24Speaker 1: Medello are seen covering the street and sidewalk. And the
