Speaker 1: Chapter seventeen, Pinocchio eats sugar but refuses to take medsin.
• 0:07
Speaker 1: When the undertakers come for him, he drinks the medsin
• 0:10
Speaker 1: and feels better. Afterwards, he tells a lie, and in punishment,
• 0:16
Speaker 1: his nose grows longer and longer. As soon as the
• 0:23
Speaker 1: three doctors had left the room, the fairy went to
• 0:26
Speaker 1: Pinocchio's bed, and, touching him on the forehead, noticed that
• 0:31
Speaker 1: he was burning with fever. She took a glass of water,
• 0:35
Speaker 1: put a white powder into it, and, handing it to
• 0:39
Speaker 1: the marionette, said lovingly to him, drink this, and in
• 0:44
Speaker 1: a few days you'll be up and well. Pinocchio looked
• 0:48
Speaker 1: at the glass, made a wry face and asked, in
• 0:52
Speaker 1: a whining voice, is it sweet or bitter? It is bitter,
• 0:58
Speaker 1: but it is good for you. If it is bitter,
• 1:02
Speaker 1: I don't want it. Drink it. I don't like anything bitter.
• 1:10
Speaker 1: Drink it, and I'll give you a lump of sugar
• 1:12
Speaker 1: to take the bitter taste from your mouth. Where's the
• 1:16
Speaker 1: sugar here it is, said the fairy, taking a lump
• 1:21
Speaker 1: from a golden sugar bowl. I want the sugar first,
• 1:27
Speaker 1: then I'll drink the bitter water. Do you promise yes?
• 1:36
Speaker 1: The fairy gave him the sugar, and Pinocchio, after chewing
• 1:40
Speaker 1: and swallowing it in a twinkling, said, smacking his lips,
• 1:45
Speaker 1: if only sugar were medsin, I should take it every day.
• 1:51
Speaker 1: Now keep your promise and drink these few drops of water.
• 1:55
Speaker 1: They'll be good for you. Pinocchio took the glass in
• 2:00
Speaker 1: both hands and stuck his nose into it. He lifted
• 2:04
Speaker 1: it to his mouth and once more stuck his nose
• 2:07
Speaker 1: into it. It is too bitter, much, too bitter. I
• 2:11
Speaker 1: can't drink it. How do you know when you haven't
• 2:14
Speaker 1: even tasted it. I can imagine it, I smell it.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: I want another lump of sugar, then I'll drink it.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: The fairy, with all the patience of a good mother,
• 2:29
Speaker 1: gave him more sugar and again handed him the glass.
• 2:34
Speaker 1: I can't drink it like that, the marionette said, making
• 2:39
Speaker 1: more wry faces. Why because that feather pillow on my
• 2:46
Speaker 1: feet bothers me. The fairy took away the pillow. It's
• 2:51
Speaker 1: no use. I can't drink it even now. What's the
• 2:56
Speaker 1: matter now? I don't like the way that door looks.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: It's half open. The fairy closed the door. I won't
• 3:07
Speaker 1: drink it, cried Pinocchio, bursting out crying, I won't drink
• 3:13
Speaker 1: this awful water. I won't, I won't. No, no, no, no,
• 3:18
Speaker 1: my boy, you'll be sorry. I don't care. You are
• 3:23
Speaker 1: very sick. I don't care. In a few hours, the
• 3:30
Speaker 1: fever will take you far away to another world. I
• 3:34
Speaker 1: don't care. Aren't you afraid of death? Not a bit.
• 3:41
Speaker 1: I'd rather die than drink that awful metsin. At that moment,
• 3:47
Speaker 1: the door of the room flew open, and in came
• 3:50
Speaker 1: four rabbits as black as ink, carrying a small black
• 3:54
Speaker 1: coffin on their shoulders. What do you want from me, Pinocchio?
• 4:02
Speaker 1: We have come for you, said the largest rabbit. For me.
• 4:09
Speaker 1: But I'm not dead yet. No, not dead yet, but
• 4:15
Speaker 1: you will be in a few moments, since you have
• 4:19
Speaker 1: refused to take the mets in, which would have made
• 4:22
Speaker 1: you well. O fairy, my fairy. The marionette cried out,
• 4:29
Speaker 1: give me that glass quick, please. I don't want to die. No, no,
• 4:34
Speaker 1: not yet, not yet, And holding the glass with his
• 4:39
Speaker 1: two hands, he swallowed the mets in at one gulp. Well,
• 4:45
Speaker 1: said the four rabbits. This time we have made the
• 4:49
Speaker 1: trip for nothing, and turning on their heels, they marched
• 4:55
Speaker 1: solemnly out of the room, carrying their little black coffin
• 4:59
Speaker 1: and mutter and grumbling between their teeth. In a twinkling
• 5:05
Speaker 1: Pinocchio felt fine. With one leap, he was out of
• 5:09
Speaker 1: bed and into his clothes. The fairy, seeing him run
• 5:14
Speaker 1: and jump around the room gay as a bird on
• 5:17
Speaker 1: a wing, said to him, My medicin was good for
• 5:21
Speaker 1: you after all, wasn't it good? Indeed, it has given
• 5:26
Speaker 1: me new life. Why then did I have to beg
• 5:30
Speaker 1: you so hard to make you drink it. I'm a boy,
• 5:35
Speaker 1: you see, and all boys hate medsin more than they
• 5:38
Speaker 1: do sickness. What a shame boys ought to know after
• 5:44
Speaker 1: all that medsin taking in time can save them from
• 5:48
Speaker 1: much pain and even from death. Next time, I won't
• 5:53
Speaker 1: have to be begged so hard. I remember those black
• 5:58
Speaker 1: rabbits with the black coffin on their show, and I'll
• 6:01
Speaker 1: take the glass and poof down it will go. Come
• 6:05
Speaker 1: here now and tell me how it came about that
• 6:08
Speaker 1: you found yourself in the hands of the assassins. It
• 6:13
Speaker 1: happened that fire eater gave me five gold pieces to
• 6:16
Speaker 1: give to my father. But on the way, I met
• 6:19
Speaker 1: a fox and a cat who asked me, do you
• 6:22
Speaker 1: want the five pieces to become two thousand? And I
• 6:26
Speaker 1: said yes, And they said, come with us to the
• 6:30
Speaker 1: Field of Wonders, and I said, let's go. Then they said,
• 6:36
Speaker 1: let us stop at the Inn of the Red Lobster
• 6:38
Speaker 1: for dinner, and after midnight we'll set out again. We
• 6:43
Speaker 1: ate and went to sleep. When I awoke, they were gone,
• 6:47
Speaker 1: and I started out in the darkness all alone. On
• 6:52
Speaker 1: the road, I met two assassins dressed in black cold sacks,
• 6:57
Speaker 1: who said to me your money or your life, and
• 7:00
  Speaker 1: I said, I haven't any money for you. See, I've
• 7:04
Speaker 1: put my money under my tongue. One of them tried
• 7:07
Speaker 1: to put his hand in my mouth, and I bit
• 7:10
Speaker 1: it off and spat it out. But it wasn't a hand,
• 7:13
Speaker 1: it was a cat's paw. And they ran after me,
• 7:17
Speaker 1: and I ran and ran till at last they caught
• 7:20
Speaker 1: me and tied my neck with a rope and hanged
• 7:23
Speaker 1: me to a tree, saying to morrow we'll come back
• 7:26
Speaker 1: for you, and you'll be dead and your mouse will
• 7:29
Speaker 1: be open, and then we'll take the gold pieces that
• 7:31
Speaker 1: you have hidden under your tongue. Where are the gold pieces. Now,
• 7:37
Speaker 1: the fairy asked, I lost them, answered Pinocchio. But he
• 7:44
Speaker 1: told a lie, for he had them in his pocket.
• 7:48
Speaker 1: As he spoke, his nose, long though it was, became
• 7:52
Speaker 1: at least two inches longer. And where did you lose them?
• 7:59
Speaker 1: In the wood near by? At this second lie, his
• 8:04
Speaker 1: nose grew a few more inches. If you lost them
• 8:07
Speaker 1: in the nearby wood, said the fairy, we'll look for
• 8:11
Speaker 1: them and find them. For everything that is lost there
• 8:15
Speaker 1: is always found. Ah, now I remember, replied the marionette,
• 8:21
Speaker 1: becoming more and more confused. I did not lose the
• 8:24
Speaker 1: gold pieces, but I swallowed them when I drank the medicin.
• 8:30
Speaker 1: At this third lie, his nose became longer than ever,
• 8:34
Speaker 1: so long that he could not even turn round. If
• 8:39
Speaker 1: he turned to the right, he knocked it against the bed,
• 8:42
Speaker 1: or into the window panes. If he turned to the left,
• 8:46
Speaker 1: he struck the walls or the door. If he raised
• 8:49
Speaker 1: it a bit, he almost put the fairy's eyes out.
• 8:54
Speaker 1: The fairy sat looking at him and laughing. Why do
• 8:58
Speaker 1: you laugh, the marionette asked her, worried now at the
• 9:03
Speaker 1: sight of his growing nose, I am laughing at your lies.
• 9:08
Speaker 1: How do you know I'm lying. Lies, my boy, are
• 9:13
Speaker 1: known in a moment. There are two kinds of lies,
• 9:17
Speaker 1: lies with short legs and lies with long noses. Yours
• 9:22
Speaker 1: just now happened to have long noses. Pinocchio, not knowing
• 9:29
Speaker 1: where to hide his shame, tried to escape from the room,
• 9:33
Speaker 1: but his nose had become so long that he could
• 9:36
Speaker 1: not get it out of the door. End of Chapter seventeen.
