- 0:00Hey everybody, this is your GM, your back row
- 0:01dominance, your hopium, hopium, hopium, hopium,
- 0:04hopium dealer, your GM who currently is not on
- 0:06a team right now, but don't you worry about it,
- 0:07Kale. Here to bring you episode 11 of the Stack
- 0:10and Shed series. Now in this series, we're covering
- 0:12all 32 teams, so everybody gets a chance to be
- 0:15talked about, all right? Now in this series,
- 0:17we're covering a few different topics, and they
- 0:18include what went wrong, what do they need, stack
- 0:22or shed, their draft picks. One move I would
- 0:26do in their cap space, all right? Now, in this
- 0:28episode, we're going to the Dirty South, all
- 0:30right? We're stopping by the Trill Burgers. We're
- 0:32stopping by the Screw Shop. We're stopping by
- 0:34a few different landmarks in H -Town, all right?
- 0:36We're getting ourselves a couple things to get
- 0:38ourselves acquainted with the culture and everything
- 0:40because we're talking about the Texans, all right?
- 0:42So make sure you guys go to Bucky's and get yourself
- 0:44and me a t -shirt. Get us some brisket. Get us
- 0:48some chips. Get us some snacks because we got
- 0:50a lot to cover with this team. So let's lock
- 0:53in. All right, let's get into it. So what went
- 1:02wrong in the Texan season? And I will eventually
- 1:05say it was regressing quarterback play. Going
- 1:07into last season, I had a lot of questions about
- 1:10C .J. Stroud due in part to his regression that
- 1:12we have seen within the last few years. And this
- 1:15isn't the type of regression that only former
- 1:16players or coaches or former offensive coordinators
- 1:20or people who've been around the sport of football
- 1:23can only see. This is the type of regression
- 1:25that everyone can see. He's not throwing the
- 1:28ball like how he used to. He's not executing
- 1:30the plays like how he used to. He hasn't been
- 1:33super consistent. When comparing CJ Stroud from
- 1:362024 to 2025, this is what you have according
- 1:39to Sumer Sports. So in 2024, CJ Stroud was 532
- 1:43passing attempts for 336 completions, 3 ,727
- 1:49passing yards, 219 .2 passing yards per game,
- 1:537 yards per attempt, 20 touchdowns, 12 interceptions,
- 1:56a 63 .2 % completion percentage. Now in that
- 1:59season, they made it to the playoffs and these
- 2:01are his stats. He was 41. for 51 which is 67
- 2:05.2 percent 527 passing yards one touchdown one
- 2:09interception and 8 .6 yards per attempt now when
- 2:12you look at his stats this past season this is
- 2:14what we have 423 passing attempts for 273 completions,
- 2:203 ,041 passing yards, 217 .2 passing yards per
- 2:24game, 7 .1 yards per attempt, 19 touchdowns,
- 2:288 interceptions, and a 64 .5 % completion percentage.
- 2:31Now when you look at his playoff stats, it's
- 2:33actually really bad. 41 for 79, which is 51 .9%,
- 2:38462 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 5 interceptions,
- 2:43and 5 .8 yards per attempt. Now, I'm not saying
- 2:47that CJ Stroud needs to be in the same stratosphere
- 2:49as a Burrow or Allen or Lamar or Mahomes, but
- 2:54CJ Stroud has the talent to be a really good
- 2:57quarterback. And in the past few years, we have
- 3:00not seen that in CJ Stroud. And there's nobody
- 3:02that he can point the finger at but himself.
- 3:05Going into the playoffs last season, the Texans
- 3:07were primed to go on a crazy run. Their first
- 3:10opponent was the Steelers, a Steelers team that
- 3:14hobbled themselves into the playoffs. And for
- 3:17a majority of the game, it was the Texas defense
- 3:19that was keeping the game close. Then your next
- 3:22opponent was the Patriots, a Patriots offense
- 3:24that wasn't playing their best ball. And you
- 3:27mean to tell me you wasn't able to capitalize
- 3:28off of the defensive plays and try to put some
- 3:31points on the board? Now, I wasn't expecting
- 3:33CJ Stroud to just light it up for four quarters
- 3:36straight, but what I was expecting was for CJ
- 3:38Stroud to capitalize every single time the defense
- 3:42put them in a great field position. But that's
- 3:45not what we saw. Instead, we saw a quarterback
- 3:47that looked like a deer in headlights. Understand
- 3:50this, my fellow football junkies. It is the playoffs
- 3:52that defines a quarterback's career, not the
- 3:55regular season. Jared Goff looks fine in the
- 3:58regular season, but when he gets to the playoffs,
- 4:00he folds. But guess what? When Mahomes gets into
- 4:03the playoffs, he is a completely different beast.
- 4:06Tom Brady can struggle the entire regular season,
- 4:09but if he gets into the playoffs, it is hell
- 4:11to pay for any team that has to face him, regardless
- 4:15if it's home or away. That's what defines who
- 4:18you are. And so far, what can we say about CJ
- 4:21Stroud in the playoffs? What can we say about
- 4:23CJ Stroud in the regular season? Because everything
- 4:26that I have to say about him really isn't that
- 4:28good. And I know that he has the potential to
- 4:31do it. You just have to put it together. Now,
- 4:34I'm not saying this was a Super Bowl roster,
- 4:37but this was the closest thing to it. This should
- 4:39have been the year that you would have went on
- 4:41that run. Because at that time, guess what? Mahomes
- 4:45was in the playoffs. Lamar was in the playoffs.
- 4:48Justin Herbert was in the playoffs. It was wide
- 4:51open for you. The only team that was a true threat
- 4:54in the playoffs for the AFC was the Broncos.
- 4:57So the only thing that you had to worry about
- 4:59was the defense. And as long as you kept the
- 5:01defense in check, you had a legitimate chance.
- 5:04And that's not what we saw. We saw somebody that
- 5:07folded under pressure when the team needed him
- 5:10the most. And that's not what you need in a quarterback.
- 5:13You need your quarterback to elevate their play
- 5:16when all the pressure is on their shoulders.
- 5:18And you can't say that Texas haven't done their
- 5:21job because they've surrounded you with endless
- 5:23weapons. You have a really good receiving core.
- 5:26You have a productive tight end. You just got
- 5:28David Montgomery. They just signed Braden Smith.
- 5:31They just signed Wyatt Teller. You have everything
- 5:33that you need to be successful. All you have
- 5:37to do is just deliver. If you made it to the
- 5:40AFC Championship this past season, nobody would
- 5:44say anything about you. But because you guys
- 5:47failed to make it to that point, and because
- 5:49you guys failed to capitalize on a year where
- 5:53Patrick Mahomes was not in the playoffs, now
- 5:55everybody is looking at you, asking the question,
- 5:58is CJ Stroud the franchise guy, or is he just
- 6:02the bridge for somebody else to come in? Now,
- 6:05with that being said, what do the Texans need?
- 6:07And that is more consistency from CJ Stroud.
- 6:10I don't know if they need to bring in somebody
- 6:12to just refine CJ Stroud. I don't know what it
- 6:15is. But whatever the Texans need to do to maximize
- 6:18CJ Stroud's potential, do it at this point. Because
- 6:21this is a very loaded roster. And this roster
- 6:25can go to the Super Bowl. All they need is for
- 6:29CJ Stroud to get his act together. As long as
- 6:32C .J. Stroud can play to where he's either the
- 6:34best or the second best quarterback in his division
- 6:37and maybe the 10th or 15th best quarterback in
- 6:40the AFC, I think the Texans have a chance. But
- 6:43if he fails to reach that point, then we need
- 6:46to have an honest conversation about C .J. Stroud.
- 6:49Especially with next year coming up where everybody
- 6:52is saying there's supposed to be a robust amount
- 6:55of quarterbacks that are going to be available.
- 6:57And we also have to remember that the Texans
- 6:59have a major financial decision that they have
- 7:01to make with CJ Stroup because they either have
- 7:03to pick up his fifth year option or they're going
- 7:05to have to pay him 60 plus million a year. And
- 7:07at this point, I would venture to say the Texans
- 7:09are probably going to let this thing play out
- 7:11all the way to the end. Now, with that being
- 7:14said, the question we all need to ask ourselves
- 7:16is stack or shed. And I would venture to say
- 7:18stack. And the reason why I say that is because
- 7:20this is a very loaded roster. I would venture
- 7:23to say this is the best roster in their division.
- 7:26You have all the things that you need in order
- 7:29for this team to be successful and to go on a
- 7:32long playoff run, maybe even go to the Super
- 7:34Bowl and win the Super Bowl. All you need is
- 7:37for C .J. Stroud to elevate his play. If you
- 7:39can play like how Sam Darnold played last season,
- 7:42that is enough for the team to make it to the
- 7:44Super Bowl. Because Sam Darnold wasn't spectacular
- 7:47last season. Sam Darnold really didn't start
- 7:49cooking until he made it into the playoffs. If
- 7:52you don't believe me, look at the stats. The
- 7:54stats don't lie. The play don't lie. The tape
- 7:56don't lie. All right. Now, with that being said,
- 7:58when we look at their draft picks, they have
- 7:59their first. They have two seconds, a third,
- 8:02two fourths, two fifths, and a seventh. Now,
- 8:04we all know the Texas GM loves to be fluid when
- 8:07it comes to the draft. Sometimes he'll trade
- 8:09up. Sometimes he'll trade down. Sometimes he'll
- 8:11trade away some picks to get a player. He likes
- 8:14to do it all. All right. But the question is
- 8:16this. Do you believe there is a position of need
- 8:19on your team right now that requires you to be
- 8:21aggressive and trade up? Or do you feel complacent
- 8:24on how your roster is right now and you can trade
- 8:26down? And speaking of that, the one move that
- 8:29I would do is entertain trading out of the first
- 8:32round. And the reason why I say that is because
- 8:34this draft class isn't a draft class where you
- 8:37need to take somebody in the first round. Instead,
- 8:39this is a draft class that you can see how the
- 8:42board falls and you can trade out of the first
- 8:44round and still get a high quality player. The
- 8:47Broncos have been looking for a high quality
- 8:50wide receiver. And this is a wide receiver class
- 8:52that's really good. But they said, you know what?
- 8:55We want the proven tech. over the potential talent.
- 8:58And that makes sense. So if you're the Texans,
- 9:01I would trade out of the first round. I would
- 9:04play around in the second and third round, maybe
- 9:07use the fourth or fifth round to, you know, add
- 9:09some depth and maybe some competition for, you
- 9:11know, for certain positions. And then I would
- 9:13just go from there. Because at this point, what
- 9:16do you really need on this roster? You have Will
- 9:18Anderson. You have Daniil Hunter. You have your
- 9:21quarterback for now. You have your wide receivers.
- 9:23You have your running back. You have your offensive
- 9:25line. The only position that I would say the
- 9:28Texans... probably need to address is interior
- 9:30defensive line. But even then, there's not a
- 9:33lot of high quality prospects that they can go
- 9:35after. Unless you go after Caleb Banks, unless
- 9:38you go after Daryl Jackson, unless you go after
- 9:41Dante Corleone, or you make a move for Lee Hunter,
- 9:44there's no need for you to allocate a first round
- 9:46pick on a defensive tackle, especially when you
- 9:49know that some of these defensive tackles may
- 9:51fall. There's a good chance that Caleb Banks
- 9:54may fall because he has a fracture in his foot.
- 9:56There's a good chance that Lee Hunter may just
- 9:59be a high -end second -round pick. There's a
- 10:01good chance that Dante Corleone, Daryl Jackson,
- 10:04Zane Durant, and all those defensive linemen
- 10:07may still be available in day two and day three
- 10:10of the draft. And I want to put y 'all on game
- 10:12real quick. There's a lot of teams right now
- 10:14that are preparing for the 27 draft class because
- 10:17a lot of people believe that the 27 draft class
- 10:20is going to be another spectacular draft class
- 10:22because you have people such as Jeremiah Smith,
- 10:25Ryan Williams, Lenore Sellers, Archie Manning
- 10:28possibly. So really think about this for a second.
- 10:30If you're the Texans, it's better for you to
- 10:33just trade down, recoup some picks for this draft
- 10:36class as well as the 27 draft class to position
- 10:40yourself. to make a major move if you want to
- 10:42do it in 27 or in 26 at the trade deadline instead
- 10:46of just taking somebody that you're really not
- 10:48high on in the first round looking at the texans
- 10:51cap situation they have 28 .5 million now that
- 10:54number can fluctuate a little bit because we
- 10:56all know they're going to pay will anderson and
- 10:58we all know that they're probably going to save
- 10:59a lot of that money for the draft but my question
- 11:02is this If you're the Texans, do you try to be
- 11:05players in that second and third wave of free
- 11:07agency? Because there's a lot of notable players
- 11:10that are still available. You can go after Cam
- 11:12Jordan if you want to. You can go after Deebo
- 11:15Samuel. You can go after Jawan Jennings. You
- 11:17have a lot of options, but only time will tell.
