- 0:00People vanish here. Cameras fail and blood runs
- 0:04cold. Those who come looking for
- 0:06answers often leave with scars they can't explain, if they
- 0:11leave at all. Locals call it cursed.
- 0:14Scientists call it an anomaly. Those who have stepped foot into
- 0:18it simply call it hell. Today we will be covering the
- 0:23terrifying and enigmatic place simply known as Hoyabashu Forest
- 0:30here on Mystery Archives. Nestled on the outskirts of
- 0:46Klushnapoka and Transylvania, the Hoyabashu Forest is a place
- 0:52where history and horror intertwine.
- 0:55Beneath its canopy lie traces of Romania's oldest Neolithic
- 0:59settlement, a 6500 year old burial ground, and the ruins of
- 1:05ancient houses. But it is not these
- 1:07archaeological relics that have earned Hoya Basu, its ominous
- 1:11name, the world's most haunted forest.
- 1:14That reputation comes from the countless modern tales of
- 1:18horror, which include mysterious disappearances, ghostly
- 1:22apparitions and uncanny phenomena that defies scientific
- 1:26explanation. Locals have long avoided this
- 1:29woodland. According to legend, centuries
- 1:33ago a shepherd named Bashu drove his flock of 200 sheep into
- 1:37these trees and was never seen again.
- 1:41To this day, many in Kluge refused to enter Hoya Basu,
- 1:45whispering at those who wander under its twisted bows risk
- 1:49vanishing into thin air. Those brave enough to test the
- 1:53forest boundaries often emerge shaken and marked, sometimes
- 1:57literally. Visitors speak of sudden rashes
- 2:01and burns that rise on their skin, intense headaches and
- 2:05nausea striking without warning, and an overwhelming feeling that
- 2:10something unseen is watching you from the shadows.
- 2:13Electronic devices go haywire, phones die, cameras refuse to
- 2:19function and compasses spend uselessly, as if the forest
- 2:23exists in a realm where North and South have no meaning.
- 2:27In older times, villagers attributed these disturbances to
- 2:31evil spirits or the devil himself, a curse on the land
- 2:35that made animals panic and humans flee and dread.
- 2:40Modern science is yet to offer a better explanation, which is why
- 2:44Hoya Basu's eerie lore only continues to grow.
- 2:48This grainy photograph of a disc shaped craft over the Hoya Basu
- 2:53clearing remains one of the forest's most iconic mysteries.
- 2:57Barnea, a 45 year old military technician, was spending a quiet
- 3:02August afternoon picnicking in the forest with his girlfriend
- 3:06and two friends when the silence was broken by a shout.
- 3:10It was shortly past noon on August 18th of 1968, a bright,
- 3:15clear day, and Barneu had wandered off to gather some
- 3:18firewood. His friend's urgent cries
- 3:21quickly made him Sprint back to the clearing where they'd laid
- 3:24their picnic. There, above the tree line, was
- 3:28a spectacular side unfolding. A round, metallic object hovered
- 3:33effortlessly in the sky, glinting in the sunlight.
- 3:37The thing was unlike any aircraft they knew.
- 3:40It was perfectly silent, drifting over the clearing with
- 3:44their hearts pounding. Barney raised to the 35mm camera
- 3:48he had brought along and managed to snap a sequence of three
- 3:52photographs through the lens. He watched the flying saucer
- 3:56circle slowly over the forest, then suddenly execute a strange
- 4:02tilting maneuver, almost a playful meteor tumble, before
- 4:06going out of sight at an incredible speed.
- 4:09In the span of a breath, the object was gone.
- 4:13Sitting stunned, Barnea and his friends realized that they had
- 4:17witnessed something truly extraordinary.
- 4:20And indeed, when his photos were developed, they revealed a clear
- 4:24Dome shaped disc against the afternoon sky, tangible evidence
- 4:29that would soon thrust Hoya Basu Forest into the international
- 4:33spotlight. Barnea's images, published in
- 4:36local newspapers, gave the forest its first taste of global
- 4:40notoriety. UFO enthusiasts around the world
- 4:43were astonished. Here was a credible eyewitness,
- 4:47a sober military man, presenting what appeared to be one of the
- 4:51clearest UFO photographs ever taken in Romania.
- 4:55Yet for Emil Barnea himself, the encounter brought misfortune.
- 4:59In 1968, Romania was under a communist regime, deeply
- 5:04hostile, filed as superstitions and paranormal tales.
- 5:08Admitting that he saw an otherworldly craft and worse,
- 5:11providing photographic proof did not sit well with the
- 5:15authorities. Barnea was derided by his
- 5:18superiors, and before long this upstanding technician was
- 5:22summarily fired from his job for daring to report a flying
- 5:26saucer. His sighting was officially
- 5:29ignored. There were no tabloids or TV
- 5:31shows in communist Romania that would celebrate such a story,
- 5:35but still the legend quietly grew.
- 5:38The photos survived, and years later, after the regime fell,
- 5:43they resurfaced abroad. In 1977, Barnea's remarkable
- 5:47pictures were presented at a UFO conference in Acapulco,
- 5:52astonishing researchers who deemed them some of the most
- 5:55compelling UFO images ever captured.
- 5:58To this day, no one has provided A definitive explanation for
- 6:02what Barnea captured on film. He gained no riches or fame from
- 6:06it, only a footnote in the halls of history of the unexplained.
- 6:11And Barnea was not alone in suffering consequences for
- 6:15delving into the forest secrets. As tour guide Marius Leisa notes
- 6:20darkly, many of the early researchers who poked into the
- 6:23forest mysteries met unsettling ends, some allegedly being found
- 6:28not long after in psychiatric wards, their sanity frayed by
- 6:32either the state's punishment or something far stranger that they
- 6:36had encountered among those trees.
- 6:39If UF OS initially brought Hoya Bachu fame, it's ghosts and
- 6:43phantoms that cemented its infamy.
- 6:46Over the years, scores of people have reported encountering
- 6:50apparitions in these woods, pale figures peering out from behind
- 6:55gnarled trunks, shadowy silhouettes that flit between
- 6:59the trees and then dissolve into thin air. 1 Early explorer of
- 7:03the forest, biologist Alexander Sift, found that his camera
- 7:08picked up things that his eyes did not.
- 7:11In the 1950s, Sift conducted a series of solitary expeditions
- 7:16into Hoya Basu and snapped hundreds of photos.
- 7:20When he developed them in his darkroom, he was astonished to
- 7:24see unexplainable shapes in the frames, faces, and figures
- 7:29lurking in the background. The local villagers to whom Sift
- 7:32showed the images to were terrified.
- 7:35To them, it confirmed what they had always suspected, that
- 7:39spirits roamed the forest. Decades later, a respected
- 7:43chemistry professor named Adrian Petrut spent years studying the
- 7:48site and also witnessed these eerie visions.
- 7:51Petrut reported seeing misty, ghostly beings materializing in
- 7:55the darkness under trees, sometimes an entire spectral
- 7:59form, other times just a floating, disembodied head
- 8:03drifting through the gloom. Such a accounts, coming from
- 8:06educated observers as well as from folklore, have led many to
- 8:10believe that the forest is some kind of gateway between the
- 8:14world of the living and that of the dead.
- 8:17The very air in Hoya Basu seems charged with unseen presences,
- 8:22giving anyone who enters an immediate prickling of the skin
- 8:26and the sense that they are never truly alone.
- 8:29For those who wander the crooked paths of Hoya Basu forest at
- 8:32night, it's often what you hear that provokes terror.
- 8:36Visitors frequently speak of an uncanny auditory hallucination,
- 8:41the crunch of footsteps pacing in the leaves, keeping an even
- 8:44distance just out of sight. Yet when they shine their
- 8:48flashlight towards the noise, nothing is there.
- 8:52Others describe whispers floating on the breeze, or burst
- 8:56of distant, disembodied laughter.
- 8:58Echo following between the trees, as though some unseen
- 9:01figures are mocking their very presence.
- 9:04And occasionally the encounters turn physical.
- 9:08More than one traveler has felt an invisible hand on their
- 9:11shoulder or pushed them in the back, delivering a shock of
- 9:14adrenaline and fear. I was not entirely alone, and
- 9:19something shoved me, one visitor insisted.
- 9:22Yet no branch or route had caused their stumble.
- 9:26Tour guides have learned to take such reports seriously, as they
- 9:30occur with alarming consistency. People enter the forest brimming
- 9:34with skepticism, only to emerge pale and wide eyed, convinced
- 9:39that they were touched or even stalked by unseen entities.
- 9:43The Ford's suppressive atmosphere amplifies every fear.
- 9:47It is easy to imagine eyes watching from the dense
- 9:49undergrowth, or to misinterpret a swaying branch as a human
- 9:54figure. But in Hoya Basu, so many
- 9:57independent witnesses have described the same phenomena,
- 10:00the same giggling echoes, the same dark silhouettes sitting on
- 10:04the edge of vision. One especially harrowing
- 10:08incident illustrates just how these experiences can feel.
- 10:13On the evening of August 18th of 1999, exactly 31 years to the
- 10:18day after Emil Barnea's UFO sighting, a group of five
- 10:23Kluchna Puka locals decided to camp near the infamous central
- 10:27clearing of Hoya Basu. They had heard the legends and
- 10:31came equipped with flashlights and a healthy dose of
- 10:34skepticism. As twilight fell, however, the
- 10:37forest mood seemed to change. An unnatural coldness descended
- 10:41around them, drastic enough that the friends found themselves
- 10:45shivering on a warm summer night.
- 10:48Their compass needles began spinning erratically, and their
- 10:52GPS units flickered out. Phone batteries that were fully
- 10:56charged an hour before suddenly drained to 0, cutting off their
- 11:00connection to the outside world. Then came the footfalls.
- 11:05They were heavy, deliberate steps, trudging in a circle
- 11:08around their campsite. The group fell silent, shining
- 11:11their flashlights into to the black timber line, expecting at
- 11:15any moment to catch the gleam of an animal's eyes, but the lights
- 11:19revealed nothing except gnarled tree trunks.
- 11:22The footsteps persisted, now accompanied by faint whispering
- 11:26voices and a single peel of muffled laughter that sent a
- 11:30jolt of panic through the campers.
- 11:33With their fears rising, they huddled together back-to-back.
- 11:37That's when one of them spotted a shape between the trees.
- 11:40A fleeting shadow, Humanoid, but impossibly fast, fleeting from 1
- 11:46trunk to the next. In the distance, another cry
- 11:50rang out as one of the hikers felt a sharp pain across his
- 11:54forearm. Under the beam of the
- 11:56flashlight, 3 fresh scratches were revealed, slashed across
- 12:00the skin. It was as if an invisible claw
- 12:03had raked him. That was enough to send the
- 12:06party scrambling out of the forest and a blind stumbling
- 12:09dash. They didn't stop running until
- 12:12the trees thinned and they burst out onto the nearest Rd.
- 12:16Only later, after catching their breaths under the safe glow of
- 12:19St. lamps, did they realize that the footsteps and whispers had
- 12:24ceased as abruptly they began and their previously dead phones
- 12:28flickered back to life. Their batteries mysteriously
- 12:32restored, the group could only conclude that something in that
- 12:36clearing had toyed with them. Their story, passed down among
- 12:40locals, has become one of the forests well known cautionary
- 12:44tales. A modern campfire story with the
- 12:47power even to make cynics reconsider a nighttime hike.
- 12:52Of all of Hoya Basu's legends, perhaps the most settling is the
- 12:56tale of the little girl who vanished.
- 12:59The story has many variations, but most can agree on the core
- 13:03details. In the early 1980s, as some tell
- 13:07it, a family from Kluchnapoca was picnicking in a sunny Meadow
- 13:11at the forest edge when their five year old daughter wandered
- 13:15away chasing a butterfly. In just a few minutes, the
- 13:19parents had taken their eyes off her.
- 13:21The girl had slipped past the tree line and into the shadows.
- 13:25Hoya Bashu. And she did not come back.
- 13:29Distraught, the family initiated a massive search.
- 13:33Police combed every trail. Volunteers and shepherds scoured
- 13:37the woods for weeks, but not a single clue turned up.
- 13:41Was as if the forest had swallowed the child hole.
- 13:45Years passed, and then, on a misty autumn day, five years to
- 13:49the day of her disappearance, the little girl emerged from the
- 13:53forest at the same exact spot where she had vanished.
- 13:57She was calm, standing and calling for her mother as if
- 14:01nothing had happened. To the shock of it all, the girl
- 14:04had not aged a single day. She was still five years old,
- 14:09wearing the same cotton dress and shoes.
- 14:11She had gone missing. In strangest of all the garments
- 14:16looked clean, not tattered by five years worth of elements.
- 14:20The child was taken to the hospital and investigators
- 14:24gently questioned her. She appeared healthy, unharmed
- 14:28and utterly confused. She could recall nothing of
- 14:31where she had been and her mind no time had passed.
- 14:35One moment she was following a butterfly into the trees and the
- 14:38next she was stepping back out. How do you explain such a case?
- 14:44Some locals conclude that Hoya Basu's supernatural forces had
- 14:47pulled the girl into a time vortex or an alternate
- 14:51dimension, holding her outside of time for five long years.
- 14:56Others, more cynically, suggest that it was all a hoax or a
- 15:00tragic mix up with another lost child.
- 15:03And in truth, there are no official records to verify this
- 15:06story. It lives on his folklore rather
- 15:09than documented fact, yet many swear it's true.
- 15:13The tail of the time traveling girl.
- 15:15It's often recounted in hushed tones by those who claim that
- 15:18the forest can bend the very rules of reality.
- 15:22Deep within Hoya Basu, even the forest vegetation appears to
- 15:26bear a curse. Trees themselves grow and
- 15:29distorted in human shapes. Trunks abruptly bend at sharp
- 15:3490° angles, then twist back upright.
- 15:37Others curl and spiral into Corkscrew patterns as if melted
- 15:42by some infernal heat and certain Groves.
- 15:46The bases of the trees bulge out like misshapen tumors and
- 15:50multiple trunks, views and arch away from the ground and eerie
- 15:54symmetry under the silvery light of the moon.
- 15:57These deformed trees cast monstrous shadows, resembling
- 16:01giant hooks or gnarled claws stretching towards the sky.
- 16:05It's no wonder that visitors describe the forest as creepy,
- 16:09even in broad daylight. One glance at these woods and
- 16:13it's easy to believe that some power warped them into such
- 16:16forms. Explanations have been
- 16:18attempted. Some scientists thought strong
- 16:21winds might have blown the young trees as they grew, or that soil
- 16:25might contain an unusual amount of radiation that mutated their
- 16:29growth patterns. A detailed investigations have
- 16:32found no clear evidence of any environmental factors to account
- 16:35for the tree's grotesque shapes. So the mystery stands.
- 16:39Amid these tortured woods lies Hoya, Basu's most famous
- 16:43landmark, a round, completely barren clearing.
- 16:47Poyana Rotunda, the round Meadow.
- 16:51Imagine hiking through dense thickets of oak and beach, the
- 16:54twilight growing deeper under the canopy, and then suddenly
- 16:58the woods just stop. You step out of the tree line
- 17:01into an open, almost perfectly circular Meadow, perhaps a few
- 17:06100 feet across. Here there are no trees at all,
- 17:10only a thick carpet of grass and wildflowers stretching under the
- 17:14open sky. The circle's edges are well
- 17:17defined, as if someone took a giant cookie cutter to the
- 17:20forest and sliced out all the trees in a neat ring.
- 17:23Yet foresters and scientists have studied the soil.
- 17:26They found no clear reason why trees refuse to grow on the
- 17:29spot. Soil samples from the clearing
- 17:32show nothing poisonous or extraordinary that could even
- 17:35contribute to causing this. Nevertheless, seedlings planted
- 17:39here wither away, and even the native grass never seems to
- 17:43overgrow. It stays at a strangely uniform
- 17:46height, as though the clearing is maintained by an invisible
- 17:50groundskeeper. Many who enter this Meadow
- 17:53report any media change in atmosphere.
- 17:55The air feels heavier, the normal chirping of birds and
- 17:59insects falls silent, and a deep hush blankets the area.
- 18:04Animals avoid it. You'll seldomly see a squirrel
- 18:07or even a butterfly cross the clearing center, and some
- 18:11visitors describe the stillness as soothing.
- 18:14But more often, it's reported as intensively foreboding, a
- 18:18silence so thick that one's own breath and heartbeat feel too
- 18:23loud. This clearing is the heart of
- 18:26Hoya Basu's mysteries. It was above this very spot that
- 18:30Emil Barnea's UFO was said to hover in 1968, and indeed, many
- 18:35later sightings also concentrate here.
- 18:38Over the years, people have captured dozens of curious
- 18:42photographs on or near the clearing, or black lights
- 18:45floating above the ground and even white shapes that look like
- 18:49silhouettes or wraiths drifting through the trees at the
- 18:53clearing's end edge. Paranormal investigators
- 18:56frequently flock to this spot with measurement equipment.
- 18:59Those who bring an EMF meter, a device that detects
- 19:03electromagnetic fields, often see its spike inexplicably when
- 19:07they sweep it over the clearing. Then, on some nights, the
- 19:10clearing is a glow with an eerie green or orange radiance.
- 19:14Photographs have shown strange colored mists hanging above the
- 19:17grass, defying most explanations.
- 19:21Compasses 2GO haywire here, spinning and pointing in random
- 19:25directions. Batteries drain at a frightening
- 19:28rate. Locals have even started calling
- 19:31the clearing the dead zone, not only for its lack of vegetation,
- 19:35but because of so many mechanical and electronic
- 19:38devices dying in its vicinity. Some believe the Meadow hides a
- 19:42portal to another dimension. Even tour guides like Marius
- 19:46Lazine introduced the clearing with a nervous smile, referring
- 19:50to Hoya Basu as the Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania, a
- 19:55place where people and things vanish, and where reality itself
- 20:00might fray at the edges. For all its horrors and wonders,
- 20:04Hoya Basu Forest remains an enigma, a place that sits on the
- 20:08boundary between legend and reality.
- 20:12On one hand. Skeptics can and do argue that
- 20:16there is nothing here beyond overactive imaginations and
- 20:19natural phenomena misinterpreted as supernatural.
- 20:23After all, there are no scientific investigations that
- 20:26have ever conclusively proven a paranormal presence in the
- 20:29forest. Researchers have logged hours of
- 20:32data on magnetic fields, soil composition, and wildlife
- 20:36behavior and have found nothing definitive that points to ghosts
- 20:40or aliens. However, they do have a hard
- 20:43time explaining away the sheer volume and consistency of the
- 20:46reports from the forest. How is it that person after
- 20:50person, from rural villagers in the 1800s to tourists all the
- 20:54way into 2025, describe the same sensations, the same unseen
- 20:59eyes, and the same malicious whispers?
- 21:02Perhaps the true power of Hoya Basu is the effect on the human
- 21:06psyche that it has. It seems as though the forest
- 21:09feeds on our deepest fears and curiosities, leaving us to
- 21:13wonder whether we've encountered something truly not of this
- 21:16world, or merely the ghosts of our own imagination.
- 21:21Either way, once you've walked among the twisted trees of Hoya
- 21:24Basu, you carry a piece of its darkness with you.
- 21:28A story to tell, a shiver of a memory, a reminder that some
- 21:33places are marvelously, irreducibly unknown.
