- 1:02Speaker 1: My son is a college student at the University of Colorado.
- 1:05Speaker 1: In this past school year, he and some of his
- 1:07Speaker 1: pals took a road trip to see Mount Rushmore. I
- 1:11Speaker 1: had a two part response, First, that's awesome and second,
- 1:16Speaker 1: how long was the drive. When I learned it was
- 1:18Speaker 1: only six hours, I knew what I would be doing
- 1:21Speaker 1: the next time. My wife and I visited him at
- 1:23Speaker 1: school in sure Enough. This week we made the track
- 1:27Speaker 1: to South Dakota to see what is truly an awe
- 1:30Speaker 1: inspiring achievement in art and engineering. A brilliant man named
- 1:35Speaker 1: Gutzon Borglum was the primary sculptor, and he made models
- 1:39Speaker 1: of the four presidents' heads in a studio that were
- 1:42Speaker 1: one twelfth the size of the actual project. Then his
- 1:47Speaker 1: crew used dynamite to carve away granted from the face
- 1:50Speaker 1: of the mountain and used a fairly primitive measuring system
- 1:54Speaker 1: to recreate the models to scale. The heads of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt,
- 1:59Speaker 1: and Lincoln are sixty feet tall. Next year will mark
- 2:03Speaker 1: the one hundredth anniversary of when the project began, and
- 2:06Speaker 1: if you've never been, I highly recommend it. There's plenty
- 2:10Speaker 1: of other cool stuff nearby as well, and Rapid City
- 2:13Speaker 1: is a fun place to stay. Mount Rushmore rules. Now,
- 2:18Speaker 1: let's get to football. When Dexter Lawrence traveled by private
- 2:22Speaker 1: jet to take a physical and then sign a contract
- 2:25Speaker 1: extension with the Bengals, his wife and daughter were on
- 2:28Speaker 1: the plane, and so was an old friend, BJ Hill.
- 2:32Speaker 1: The roots of that friendship go back to when BJ
- 2:34Speaker 1: was a sophomore in college and Dexter was still in
- 2:37Speaker 1: high school. Here's my conversation with a pair of best
- 2:40Speaker 1: buds who have been reunited as teammates in Cincinnati. Let
- 2:45Speaker 1: me start with this question. What is it about the
- 2:48Speaker 1: other guy that you like and respect so much?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Dexter?
- 2:52Speaker 3: You go first, really, just this is personality. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 3: ask anybody around the building. You know, he's a guy
- 2:58Speaker 3: that gets along with any buddy, but it's true to
- 3:01Speaker 3: himself always and I can respect that a lot.
- 3:04Speaker 1: BJ.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Mine.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Mine is more like off the field, like just who
- 3:07Speaker 4: he is as a man, like you, always have your
- 3:10Speaker 4: back no matter what. He's a guy who cares about
- 3:13Speaker 4: his brother, is always gonna take care of his brother
- 3:15Speaker 4: and always be there for you.
- 3:17Speaker 1: All Right, I'm gonna turn the clock back approximately eleven years.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Dexter Lawrence, five star recruit, number two recruit in the country,
- 3:26Speaker 1: goes on a visit to NC State and BJ Hill
- 3:30Speaker 1: is picked to be the guy to host. What do
- 3:33Speaker 1: you guys remember about that first meeting?
- 3:35Speaker 2: Bj?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Eure up first, It.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Was actually more than one person. It was just me.
- 3:38Speaker 4: We had like ten guys there, coaches, I think with
- 3:41Speaker 4: the David Busters, I believe, or something like that, or
- 3:44Speaker 4: tough golfer. We just sitting there, have a good time,
- 3:47Speaker 4: and you know, it just didn't work out.
- 3:50Speaker 1: BJ did a good job, I assume along with those
- 3:52Speaker 1: other teammates.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I remembered them, for sure, I remember them, but uh,
- 3:58Speaker 3: you know, it was for me. I feel like that's
- 4:01Speaker 3: kind of where we kind of connected. He stayed the Giants,
- 4:03Speaker 3: but for me it was it was on a visit.
- 4:06Speaker 1: You're both North Carolina guys. You're from wake Forest, You're
- 4:09Speaker 1: from Oakboro.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Similar towns, probably some wake Forest probably growed up, grew
- 4:16Speaker 3: up a little bit miles away, smaller than wake Forest
- 4:19Speaker 3: for sure, way smaller.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So you considered NC state. You obviously chose to go
- 4:25Speaker 1: to Clemson. In your first year at Clemson, your team's
- 4:28Speaker 1: played each other. Clemson was heavily favored in Death Valley.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You guys almost pulled off the upset. You missed an
- 4:34Speaker 1: easy field goal with like two seconds to go. Clemson
- 4:38Speaker 1: won the game in overtime. Is that one still hurt.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Because that was a teange a lot, you know, for
- 4:46Speaker 4: our program if we won that game, for sure, but
- 4:48Speaker 4: you know it is with us.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And does that one still rank among your favorites?
- 4:52Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:53Speaker 3: All I remember was laying on the ground in the
- 4:55Speaker 3: crowd roaring like I'm like, what's going on to get up?
- 4:58Speaker 5: And he missed and we just took advantage of it
- 5:01Speaker 5: after that.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Did you guys maintain a friendship while you were in
- 5:05Speaker 1: college playing at different places or did it rekindle when
- 5:08Speaker 1: you were both with the Giants.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I think he rekindled at the Giants, Yeah, because we
- 5:12Speaker 3: wasn't messing.
- 5:13Speaker 2: With so it was cool.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So you got drafted by the Giants and then one
- 5:21Speaker 1: year later you were selected by the Giants. You're in
- 5:24Speaker 1: New York City to North Carolina, guys in the Big Apple.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Did that help that bond get stronger?
- 5:30Speaker 3: I think so, Like I think like just like like
- 5:32Speaker 3: we kind of knew each other, so that made it
- 5:35Speaker 3: for me. That made the transition easy. Just like here
- 5:38Speaker 3: like we know each other. So this transition has been
- 5:40Speaker 3: pretty smooth for me. But yeah, I say at the Giants,
- 5:43Speaker 3: that's where I kind of rekindled it and it ain't
- 5:46Speaker 3: gonna slow down.
- 5:47Speaker 1: New York City can be a little bit intimidating when
- 5:49Speaker 1: you're not from there. Did you help him adapt?
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it was good.
- 5:52Speaker 4: It was a good transition, especially for me coming from
- 5:54Speaker 4: a small town. Didn't know much about big cities or
- 5:57Speaker 4: anything like that, only Raleigh, North Carolina. But it was
- 6:00Speaker 4: kind of an easy transition because for one all that
- 6:04Speaker 4: they was focused on football. Same with him, we're all
- 6:06Speaker 4: about ball all We just wanted to win and play
- 6:08Speaker 4: be on the defensive line. So we really kept the
- 6:11Speaker 4: outside noise on the outside and did we had to
- 6:13Speaker 4: do on the film.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So when your teammates there together in New York, you
- 6:16Speaker 1: got to see the other guy on the field firsthand.
- 6:20Speaker 1: What do you respect about each other's games? You talked
- 6:22Speaker 1: about the off field stuff earlier, but how about the
- 6:25Speaker 1: on field stuff.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I think his approach to the game, he's real, he's
- 6:28Speaker 3: real consistent, Like you you know what his routine is
- 6:31Speaker 3: going to be. You know, like his mindset going into
- 6:33Speaker 3: the game, and you know that he's gonna do his
- 6:36Speaker 3: job and you just got to do yours. So like
- 6:38Speaker 3: I just I like his approach like and and that
- 6:41Speaker 3: kind of like what was molding me? Like like he's
- 6:43Speaker 3: like my vet kind of so like watching his approach,
- 6:46Speaker 3: go out to practice.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Early and go through his routines, and you know it
- 6:49Speaker 5: ain't changed. So that's what I respect.
- 6:51Speaker 1: And and the onfield stuff from your perspective, the.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Same with him, the way he approached the game, the
- 6:57Speaker 4: way he dominates games, and like he he had texted
- 7:00Speaker 4: the games or even practice like he don't know anything.
- 7:02Speaker 4: He asks questions like he don't know anything. So you
- 7:05Speaker 4: love seeing guys who your eight year or whatever ask
- 7:08Speaker 4: some questions, going out there and practice doing their all
- 7:11Speaker 4: and not just you know, taking it easy, because you
- 7:14Speaker 4: can get complacent in this game, especially how long you play.
- 7:17Speaker 4: But he at texts each and every day. If his
- 7:19Speaker 4: practice workouts games at a high level, you and you
- 7:24Speaker 4: love to see that.
- 7:25Speaker 1: So your teammates in New York for a few years,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and then BJ got traded to Cincinnati just before the
- 7:30Speaker 1: twenty twenty one season, where your heartbroken.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that was tough. That was tough, and I went
- 7:35Speaker 3: down with tough. I ain't believe him at first. I
- 7:40Speaker 3: was trying to fight it. But you know, I think
- 7:43Speaker 3: I think, you know, like just to be honest, like
- 7:45Speaker 3: I think everything happens for a reason, and I think
- 7:48Speaker 3: you know, me watching that and then talking to him
- 7:51Speaker 3: almost every every every day he was here, you know,
- 7:56Speaker 3: kind of just and now it's now we're back together,
- 7:58Speaker 3: and it's just trying to take advantage of it, you know,
- 8:01Speaker 3: like I tell him, like when I first got here,
- 8:03Speaker 3: said we're not gonna waste this moment.
- 8:05Speaker 5: So that's what that's what it was about.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The trade worked out well for you right off the bat.
- 8:09Speaker 1: The Bengals went to the Super Bowl that first year.
- 8:11Speaker 1: But were you sad that your buddy was left behind
- 8:14Speaker 1: in New York?
- 8:15Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure.
- 8:16Speaker 4: Just like I said, this is the way when all went down,
- 8:19Speaker 4: Probably I probably had one of my best camps I
- 8:21Speaker 4: ever had there, just given to all I got, just
- 8:23Speaker 4: to give myself a chance to get on the field there,
- 8:25Speaker 4: and it just didn't work out. Even some of your
- 8:27Speaker 4: best friends. It sucks, especially when you've been there for
- 8:30Speaker 4: almost four almost there for four years.
- 8:33Speaker 2: It sucked.
- 8:33Speaker 4: But you know, like you said, everything happens for a reason.
- 8:35Speaker 4: I'm here for a reason, and that's the one games.
- 8:38Speaker 1: What was the Bengals Super Bowl run? Like for you?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Watching DJ so like, so I wasn't.
- 8:46Speaker 5: I didn't my rookie.
- 8:46Speaker 3: I didn't watch too much of him until the playoffs started,
- 8:49Speaker 3: and I was like, he's really about to do this.
- 8:52Speaker 5: About to do this, and then he's talking joke, talking
- 8:55Speaker 5: joke all day every day.
- 8:58Speaker 3: And then they get there and I'm like, wow, he
- 9:00Speaker 3: made it to the super Bowl, and I was happy.
- 9:02Speaker 3: I was like my wife, you guysd her, I was
- 9:05Speaker 3: just in the in the living room, just cheesing and
- 9:07Speaker 3: smiling the old time, just happy, you know, for him
- 9:09Speaker 3: and his success, early success being traded.
- 9:13Speaker 1: So this year, after seven years in New York, he
- 9:16Speaker 1: decided to see ka trade. Did you reach out to
- 9:18Speaker 1: be Ja for advice?
- 9:20Speaker 5: I did? I did? I did?
- 9:23Speaker 3: And you know, I say it was a little biased,
- 9:26Speaker 3: but like I kind of understood where he was coming
- 9:29Speaker 3: from because we just talked a lot, and I kind
- 9:31Speaker 3: of understood, you know, how how the Bengals were and
- 9:34Speaker 3: how they how they ran things around here. So it's
- 9:37Speaker 3: it's it's been smooth. And I think, you know, his
- 9:39Speaker 3: influence helped a little bit.
- 9:42Speaker 1: P j On behalf of all of us. Thank you?
- 9:46Speaker 1: What did you say to help sell it?
- 9:49Speaker 2: I just tell him the truth.
- 9:51Speaker 4: And that's why as me as a man, as a brother,
- 9:53Speaker 4: like I just got to tell him the truth. What
- 9:54Speaker 4: I thought about the organization, teammates like this, said everybody,
- 9:58Speaker 4: and he made a decision.
- 10:00Speaker 1: So it came down. The news came down on a
- 10:02Speaker 1: Saturday night, the night before you two guys were together
- 10:06Speaker 1: for Bjay's early birthday party. Did you have an inkling?
- 10:09Speaker 1: Did you know what was gonna happen the next day?
- 10:12Speaker 5: Slightly?
- 10:13Speaker 3: But on my end, I didn't truly know, you know,
- 10:16Speaker 3: so I always had to be like, you know, I
- 10:19Speaker 3: couldn't fully commit until I fully fully knew it.
- 10:22Speaker 5: But at the back of my mind, I was kind
- 10:24Speaker 5: of understand.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I kind of understand what was going on behind the scenes,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and you know, when it came to fruition, I had
- 10:30Speaker 3: to jump.
- 10:30Speaker 1: We've learned since that it was in the works for
- 10:33Speaker 1: a couple of weeks, or at least the Bengals were
- 10:35Speaker 1: trying to get something done for a couple of weeks.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Did they ask you what kind of guy is he?
- 10:40Speaker 1: Is this something we need to do?
- 10:42Speaker 5: Oh? I didn't know anything about it.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Okay, I didn't know anything about it until everybody else
- 10:46Speaker 4: knew about it.
- 10:47Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 10:49Speaker 4: But you know, I guess I just had We had
- 10:52Speaker 4: a great conversation with some guys. Of course, you want
- 10:55Speaker 4: a great guy like like DEXI and locker room who's
- 10:58Speaker 4: good on the field at the field, go to other
- 11:00Speaker 4: people to get along with other people. So you want
- 11:03Speaker 4: to go like the senior locker room. So it's nothing
- 11:05Speaker 4: about to say about him.
- 11:07Speaker 1: What have these first few weeks been like together here
- 11:10Speaker 1: in Cincinnati.
- 11:11Speaker 3: It's for me, it's been It's been good because now,
- 11:14Speaker 3: like you know, I lead a lot in New York.
- 11:18Speaker 3: But now I'm like, you know, I'm picking up on
- 11:20Speaker 3: some of his habits, you know, to help me grow
- 11:22Speaker 3: as a as a.
- 11:22Speaker 5: Player and a man.
- 11:23Speaker 3: So I think that this transition, you know, has just
- 11:27Speaker 3: been what was what was bound to happening.
- 11:30Speaker 1: What's been special for you?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Uh, just having him around the building.
- 11:34Speaker 4: I feel like just having him here at at least
- 11:36Speaker 4: two or three more years on on my career. Yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 4: So like I'm all smell, Like I said, I really
- 11:44Speaker 4: have nothing about to say say about Decks man. You,
- 11:47Speaker 4: like I said, you love to have people in the
- 11:50Speaker 4: building like him to make, for one, make your job easier,
- 11:52Speaker 4: and the guy who's gonna help lead this group, and
- 11:56Speaker 4: just a great teammate that you love.
- 11:59Speaker 2: You love guys like that.
- 12:00Speaker 1: He's the godfather of your kids.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Correct.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I mean really, that's about the highest compliment you can
- 12:07Speaker 1: pay to somebody in all seriousness.
- 12:09Speaker 3: That a true honor. That was a true honor. And
- 12:13Speaker 3: you know I got a boy. You know, well that
- 12:17Speaker 3: was when they called us. We couldn't we couldn't turn
- 12:19Speaker 3: that down.
- 12:20Speaker 1: All right, I want to play a little game. I
- 12:23Speaker 1: call know your best bud. I'm going to ask you
- 12:26Speaker 1: five questions about the other guy. See how well you
- 12:29Speaker 1: know your friend? All right, we know your current numbers.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Bjware's ninety two, you wear ninety seven. Do you know
- 12:36Speaker 1: the other guy's college number? What did bjwar at NC State?
- 12:42Speaker 5: Ooh ninety eight?
- 12:44Speaker 1: Boom, well done, well done? What did Dexter wear at Clemson? Ninety?
- 12:51Speaker 1: All right, let's let's take it back a step further.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Both of your high school numbers were retired. What did
- 12:59Speaker 1: bj waar right? West Stanley went.
- 13:02Speaker 5: To the retirement It was a little dude, no single.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Five.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Do you know what he wore at wake Forest High?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:15Speaker 4: It was office line correct, seventy seventy six, seventy one?
- 13:22Speaker 4: What all right, Dexter has taking the lead.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Do you know the other guys like high school team
- 13:31Speaker 1: name the West Stanley Watts.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Ooh, that's a good one.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Oh, this sounds like it flows, Lions.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It kind of flows. But it's the Cults, the wake Forest.
- 13:46Speaker 2: What's rebels? I know that, all right?
- 13:54Speaker 1: That was a tough one.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Each of you guys has interceptions in the NFL. BJ
- 14:00Speaker 1: actually has three, two in the regular season, one in
- 14:04Speaker 1: the postseason. Dexter has one, but it was last year,
- 14:07Speaker 1: so it's fresh on your mind. Can you name a
- 14:10Speaker 1: quarterback that the other guy has picked off? Dexter? Do
- 14:16Speaker 1: you know one of the three quarterbacks the BJ.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Is picked remember him?
- 14:20Speaker 2: I know?
- 14:20Speaker 3: It was like a funky one. He was like one
- 14:22Speaker 3: on he's on the ground and kind of it was
- 14:27Speaker 3: a home game too. I think I can't. I can't.
- 14:30Speaker 5: I can't remember the quarterback.
- 14:32Speaker 1: That was Nick Mullins. I think was that the Vikings game?
- 14:35Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 14:36Speaker 1: Yeah, he had one in the AFC Championship game. That
- 14:39Speaker 1: was the one. I thought you would know, Patrick Mahomes,
- 14:42Speaker 1: that was big. Do you know who he picked off
- 14:44Speaker 1: last year?
- 14:45Speaker 4: The one he got says down inside the five tackled
- 14:49Speaker 4: by the quarterback?
- 14:53Speaker 2: Oh man, was it the Vikings? I believe no Chargers Chargers. Yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 2: justin Herbert.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like three yards from a big man touchdown
- 15:08Speaker 1: that was in New York too, Right, yeah, all right,
- 15:10Speaker 1: one more question. This is like the most obscure thing
- 15:13Speaker 1: I could find about you guys. Do you know what
- 15:16Speaker 1: part time job DJ Hill had in high school?
- 15:21Speaker 5: I'll say something working with his hands.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I'm sure that's accurate. It's a hard guess if he
- 15:31Speaker 1: doesn't know it, know.
- 15:32Speaker 5: It building, building construction or something.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Bag to groceries at the food lineages.
- 15:43Speaker 2: What you need, call me, all right?
- 15:46Speaker 1: Dexter attended a type of camp for a couple of
- 15:49Speaker 1: summers in high school. It was not a sports related camp.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Any idea what camp he went to or what type
- 15:56Speaker 1: of camp he went to?
- 16:00Speaker 4: Whoa, I'm gonna say, you boy.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Scout incorrect, math cam, math camp. You get a map
- 16:13Speaker 1: A little bit, a little bit? All right, this has
- 16:15Speaker 1: been fun. Let's wrap it up on this note. This
- 16:20Speaker 1: trade from the Bengals perspective, what statement do you think
- 16:23Speaker 1: it made to the entire NFL PJ You go first.
- 16:28Speaker 2: So we're here to win win games.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Bringing a guy like this, this is not even just him,
- 16:34Speaker 4: this is who he just brought in. This off season
- 16:36Speaker 4: that we mean, we mean business and we were ready
- 16:38Speaker 4: to win games.
- 16:39Speaker 2: We really went now.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Extra Yeah, just just feeding off that.
- 16:43Speaker 3: For me, I told it, it was easy for me, you know,
- 16:45Speaker 3: to make this decision and for them, you know, like
- 16:50Speaker 3: one of my friends really was like they really giving
- 16:52Speaker 3: a ten for you like not like being like I'm like,
- 16:55Speaker 3: They was like, that's pretty big, and I was like,
- 16:57Speaker 3: you know, for me, I'm just like I'm in a moment,
- 17:00Speaker 3: like I'm trying to, you know, just understand. But he
- 17:02Speaker 3: was had he had me think about, you know, the
- 17:04Speaker 3: tenth overall pick. That's a big pick. And you know,
- 17:07Speaker 3: when my mom said got to that, it was probably
- 17:09Speaker 3: like the day of really where I truly understood what
- 17:13Speaker 3: that meant and you know and just now I just
- 17:16Speaker 3: got to, you know, be the guy, you.
- 17:18Speaker 5: Know, uh, be the guy b be who I.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Am, and you know, just continue to work and you know,
- 17:23Speaker 3: continue my career.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Best buds reunited in Cincinnati, adding years to BJ Hill's career.
- 17:30Speaker 1: We've learned today, Dexter Lawrence and BJ Hill, thanks for
- 17:33Speaker 1: your time.

- 17:37Speaker 1: pick this year, Texas A and M standout Cashus Howell.

- 18:06Speaker 1: draft pick Cassius Howell. Here's the person under the pads.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts with second round draft pick
- 18:13Speaker 1: Cassius Howell out of Kansas City, Missouri. You're no longer
- 18:18Speaker 1: a Chiefs fan, but you used to be, so I
- 18:21Speaker 1: want to get your reaction January of twenty twenty two,
- 18:25Speaker 1: when the Bengals went to Arrowhead and beat the Chiefs
- 18:28Speaker 1: to go to the Super Bowl. How depressed were you
- 18:30Speaker 1: that day?
- 18:31Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I was definitely a little shook a,
- 18:33Speaker 6: you know, just because we had been doing good. But yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 6: you know, I was definitely, know, definitely mad whenever y'all
- 18:39Speaker 6: came in and it kind of got right with us.
- 18:42Speaker 6: But you know, like I said, I'm at a point
- 18:43Speaker 6: time where I don't really care about the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 18:46Speaker 6: and I'm just I'm just thankful and so blessed to
- 18:48Speaker 6: be in a situation where I'm man, I'm thankful to
- 18:50Speaker 6: be a Cincinnati Bengal.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You are a Bengal now, and we are delighted to
- 18:53Speaker 1: have you here in Cincinnati. You attended Rockhurst High School
- 18:57Speaker 1: in Kansas City, the alma mater of Ted Lass star
- 19:00Speaker 1: Jason Sudakis, among others. It sounds like you were a
- 19:04Speaker 1: late bloomer physically. How big were you, say, in ninth
- 19:08Speaker 1: or tenth grade?
- 19:08Speaker 6: Yeah, ninth grade, I was probably like five six, five seven,
- 19:13Speaker 6: like one hundred and forty pounds. I was a freshman
- 19:15Speaker 6: B team running back in safety, and yeah, so I
- 19:19Speaker 6: was just like you said, I was a late bloomer.
- 19:22Speaker 7: That next year, summer wind of my sophomore year, I
- 19:24Speaker 7: had had a.
- 19:25Speaker 6: Decent little grossburg grew, you know, kind of got some
- 19:28Speaker 6: muscleamia stuff.
- 19:28Speaker 7: And that was my first year playing defensive end actually,
- 19:30Speaker 7: so yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yeah, things clearly changed. You had six sacks in one
- 19:35Speaker 1: high school game. What was that like?
- 19:38Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, that was crazy.
- 19:39Speaker 6: That was my first year playing varsity as a as
- 19:42Speaker 6: a defensive end the second year playing defensive end as
- 19:44Speaker 6: a whole.
- 19:45Speaker 7: And it was crazy.
- 19:47Speaker 6: I was really just in a flow state, like I
- 19:49Speaker 6: really wasn't out there thinking. I was just instinctively reacting
- 19:52Speaker 6: and I was getting home. So you know, I'm just
- 19:55Speaker 6: glad to be able to have my name in the
- 19:57Speaker 6: history books for something so so so crazy and so positive.
- 20:00Speaker 1: The poor tackle that you abused in that game. He
- 20:02Speaker 1: feels a lot better now that you're a second round
- 20:04Speaker 1: NFL draft yeh.
- 20:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm I'm already know he probably definitely feels better.
- 20:07Speaker 6: You know, it wasn't didn't go through all that hectic stuff,
- 20:10Speaker 6: you know, go go fail algebra examined and have to
- 20:14Speaker 6: go guard me. You know, I probably probably makes it
- 20:16Speaker 6: feel better about itself for sure.
- 20:17Speaker 1: We're chatting with cash Is Howell. Despite your high school
- 20:21Speaker 1: high school success, you are not heavily recruited. Did you
- 20:25Speaker 1: get any indication from college coaches why that was the case.
- 20:29Speaker 6: Honestly, it was really just COVID, you know, from from
- 20:32Speaker 6: from tots of Bomb. They just all say, you know,
- 20:34Speaker 6: they just with the roster spots, you know, the rosters
- 20:36Speaker 6: being filled up with the seventh year you know, COVID guys.
- 20:39Speaker 7: You know, they just.
- 20:40Speaker 6: Didn't really feel like it was worth the risk to
- 20:43Speaker 6: take it on, you know, just with me not being
- 20:44Speaker 6: able to get to any visits or any camps. Uh,
- 20:48Speaker 6: you know, just just no, no team honestly felt like
- 20:50Speaker 6: I was I was worth the worth the offer.
- 20:52Speaker 1: So did it put a chip on your shoulder? And
- 20:54Speaker 1: is it still there?
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 20:56Speaker 6: One of many chimps chips on my shoulder. You know,
- 20:58Speaker 6: I've kind of had to deal with being overlooked since
- 21:01Speaker 6: high school, you know, just from from freshman. It is
- 21:03Speaker 6: where I'm in now, at every score that I've been to,
- 21:05Speaker 6: so you know, it's it's put one of mini chips
- 21:08Speaker 6: on my shoulder. And like I said, I if I
- 21:10Speaker 6: could go back and do it again, I'd have exactly.
- 21:13Speaker 7: How it is right now.
- 21:14Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:14Speaker 7: Like I said, I feel like it's.
- 21:15Speaker 6: Definitely helped develop my character and develop me into the
- 21:18Speaker 6: man that God sees so best fits today.
- 21:20Speaker 1: You got your college start at Bowling Green. You spent
- 21:23Speaker 1: three years with the Falcons. What was that experience like?
- 21:25Speaker 6: Yeah, it was definitely a great experience, you know, regardless
- 21:27Speaker 6: of not getting any Power five offers or anything like that.
- 21:30Speaker 6: A high school you know, I appreciate the excuse me,
- 21:33Speaker 6: the whole Bowling Green staff that you know, decided to
- 21:35Speaker 6: take a risk on a guy that you know, didn't
- 21:37Speaker 6: really never see me before, and yeah, you know came
- 21:40Speaker 6: in developed me, you know, into the honestly the player
- 21:43Speaker 6: that I am today. So you know, like I said,
- 21:45Speaker 6: it was a great experience. Met a lot of great teammates,
- 21:48Speaker 6: met a lot of great coaches, and.
- 21:50Speaker 7: Yeah, it was great experience for sure.
- 21:52Speaker 1: In your final year there, you led the mac in sacks.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Then you elected to transfer to a bigger school, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: I imagine the recruiting process was very different. What was
- 22:01Speaker 1: it like to now be courted by everybody?
- 22:03Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, you know, it was night and day
- 22:05Speaker 6: just coming out of high school. You know, I was
- 22:07Speaker 6: able to go on my first you know, official visit
- 22:10Speaker 6: and stuff like that to SEC school, you know, thankfully.
- 22:12Speaker 7: So no, it really just just just blew my mind
- 22:14Speaker 7: out of the water. It was such a great experience
- 22:17Speaker 7: to you know, just really just kind of had that
- 22:19Speaker 7: feeling like you know, you're not crazy.
- 22:20Speaker 6: Like that feeling that you got you can play at
- 22:22Speaker 6: the highest level, like you know, you could really do
- 22:24Speaker 6: this and you had the platform right Now, it's just
- 22:25Speaker 6: really about how you're going to do it once you
- 22:27Speaker 6: get there.
- 22:28Speaker 1: You certainly showed it at Texas a and m SEC
- 22:30Speaker 1: Defensive player of the Year last year eleven and a
- 22:32Speaker 1: half sacks to lead the conference, including sacks on three
- 22:36Speaker 1: consecutive plays in the second game of the season. I
- 22:39Speaker 1: asked you about six in a high school game, but
- 22:40Speaker 1: how surreal was it to get to the quarterback on
- 22:43Speaker 1: three straight snaps.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it was just kind of like just
- 22:46Speaker 6: kind of just throwing it back to the high school.
- 22:48Speaker 6: It's just kind of like one of the things like
- 22:49Speaker 6: it was almost like a flow state. Like I'm just
- 22:51Speaker 6: I just wasn't thinking. I was just letting my body
- 22:54Speaker 6: do whatever it felt like based on you know, what
- 22:57Speaker 6: I was giving, and uh, yeah, you know ended up
- 22:59Speaker 6: working out in my favor. So you know, I'm just
- 23:01Speaker 6: I'm just thankful for for God for giving me this
- 23:04Speaker 6: vessel and uh, you.
- 23:05Speaker 7: Know, just putting me in his positions today.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I've seen references to your ghost move or ghost moves
- 23:12Speaker 1: as a pass rusher. Explain the ghost move.
- 23:15Speaker 6: Yeah, the ghost of all that is is just getting
- 23:17Speaker 6: a good get off on the ball and then once
- 23:19Speaker 6: you get to the point of attach, you know, throwing
- 23:20Speaker 6: that that long arm extension, extension out to you know,
- 23:24Speaker 6: give the tackle the illusion that you're gonna go power
- 23:26Speaker 6: and then obviously, you know, once he anchors and stops
- 23:28Speaker 6: his feet, you kind of just you wipe that that
- 23:31Speaker 6: arm through, bring that wipe that shoulder through, and uh,
- 23:34Speaker 6: you know, accelerate your feet, bring up the rip and
- 23:36Speaker 6: reach and you know, go get the sack.
- 23:38Speaker 7: Go get you a strip sack, Go get paid. Brother.
- 23:40Speaker 1: Yes, sir, do you disappear like a ghost with that move?
- 23:43Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 23:44Speaker 6: You know it's a couple of clips from this past
- 23:45Speaker 6: year where you know, you can see you can see
- 23:48Speaker 6: it firsthand. So I feel like that's why I like
- 23:50Speaker 6: to call it a ghost, because it's kind of like
- 23:52Speaker 6: now you see me, now you don't, so you know, yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 6: for sure.
- 23:55Speaker 1: We're chatting with Cashius. Howel you were the ninth pick
- 23:57Speaker 1: of the second round, number forty one for all. Describe
- 24:00Speaker 1: your draft experience.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it's been a honestly a crazy experience,
- 24:05Speaker 6: just from you know, the season ending to to heading
- 24:08Speaker 6: right into you know, combine training at to combine you know,
- 24:11Speaker 6: doing all the means and meeting with the with the
- 24:13Speaker 6: teams there, going straight into Pro day training, right after
- 24:16Speaker 6: Pro Day, thirty visits, right after thirty visits draft. So
- 24:19Speaker 6: you know, it's been a kind of a crazy experience,
- 24:21Speaker 6: but you know it's been a great, great experience overall,
- 24:25Speaker 6: you know, And like I said, I'm just I'm just
- 24:26Speaker 6: so thankful to be a Cincinnati manger. Like man, it's
- 24:29Speaker 6: just God has blessed me in so many ways and
- 24:31Speaker 6: gave me so much grace.
- 24:32Speaker 7: Like I'm just I'm just so thankful.
- 24:34Speaker 1: There's a website, Cassius Enterprises dot com that's pretty impressive.
- 24:39Speaker 1: It's part football, it's part business. Did you start it?
- 24:42Speaker 1: Did somebody started for you? Tell me a little bit
- 24:45Speaker 1: about that website.
- 24:46Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, it was kind of a family thing
- 24:48Speaker 6: we decided to do to you know, just kind of
- 24:50Speaker 6: give give you know, people more of an insight of
- 24:52Speaker 6: who I am, who I am, you know, outside just
- 24:54Speaker 6: the football flair, because you know, I feel like oftentimes,
- 24:57Speaker 6: you know, just with the fans and everything, you know,
- 24:59Speaker 6: player can get caught up and you know kind of
- 25:01Speaker 6: not feel like a human like you know, people just
- 25:03Speaker 6: kind of treat them as a football player, you know,
- 25:05Speaker 6: And like I said, I just kind of wanted to
- 25:07Speaker 6: be viewed that as more than that. You know, like
- 25:09Speaker 6: I said, I'm uh, you know, just just kind of
- 25:11Speaker 6: getting my feet wet within the real estate to.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Sign off of my first house. That's where I have
- 25:14Speaker 7: my draft party actually.
- 25:16Speaker 6: And yeah, just just like I said, just kind of
- 25:18Speaker 6: given given the fans more of an insight that you know,
- 25:21Speaker 6: I'm It's bigger than a football.
- 25:22Speaker 7: Political you know, I'm a god fearing man.
- 25:24Speaker 6: You know, I'm a man that you know wants to
- 25:26Speaker 6: do right by his finances and just do the right
- 25:28Speaker 6: things in life.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And real estate is the area where you see yourself
- 25:32Speaker 1: making an impact off the field.
- 25:33Speaker 6: Most definitely, you know, like I said, I'm just starting
- 25:35Speaker 6: to get my feet wet right now with like with
- 25:37Speaker 6: me just signed off on my first house, but you know,
- 25:40Speaker 6: most definitely want to get into more you know, commercial
- 25:43Speaker 6: real estate with residents of real estate, and you know,
- 25:46Speaker 6: just just really just expand my knowledge and expand the
- 25:48Speaker 6: expand you know, expand the spand the land.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Honestly, yeah, make that money grow, all right. A few
- 25:54Speaker 1: wild card topics now for Cassius Howell. Who is your
- 25:57Speaker 1: all time favorite athlete in any sport and why Paul George.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Man, I don't know if y'all remember what year is that,
- 26:06Speaker 6: Probably like twenty thirteen Paul George and he was on
- 26:08Speaker 6: the Pacers twenty four he was going crazy on Lebron.
- 26:12Speaker 6: Like I remember, I had a fat head of Paul
- 26:15Speaker 6: George in my room. I made a in third grade.
- 26:17Speaker 6: I have made a like a little presentation on him
- 26:20Speaker 6: about him and stuff like, Man, he was just a dog.
- 26:22Speaker 6: He was one of the ones before he got injured.
- 26:24Speaker 7: So so I definitely would say, Paul.
- 26:26Speaker 1: George, other than sports, what do you do well?
- 26:30Speaker 2: Other than sports?
- 26:31Speaker 7: What do I do well?
- 26:33Speaker 6: I feel like I just am a good person overra
- 26:35Speaker 6: you know, like I said, Uh, you know, I like
- 26:37Speaker 6: to you know, put God at the forefront of you know,
- 26:40Speaker 6: just every decision at the forefront of my life, honestly,
- 26:43Speaker 6: and uh you know through that, I just you know,
- 26:45Speaker 6: I just feel like, you know, I like to treat
- 26:47Speaker 6: my neighbor with respect no matter who you are. You know,
- 26:49Speaker 6: you could be homeless, man, you could be the president.
- 26:51Speaker 6: I'm gonna treat you all with the same respects. And
- 26:54Speaker 6: you know, like I said, I just I just like
- 26:55Speaker 6: to go about my life and you know, the righteous
- 26:58Speaker 6: way and the way.
- 26:59Speaker 7: That God was see so best fits.
- 27:00Speaker 6: So just just trying to really just just just live
- 27:03Speaker 6: like Jesus honestly, all right.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Final fun fact, This one's kind of deep. If you
- 27:07Speaker 1: could meet anyone in history, living or deceased, who would
- 27:11Speaker 1: that person be.
- 27:12Speaker 6: Jesus Christ, you know, just as I, you know, just
- 27:15Speaker 6: continue to strengthen my relationship with God and to keep
- 27:18Speaker 6: just taking deep, deep, deep guds into the Bible, into
- 27:21Speaker 6: the Scripture. It's just like I want to I would
- 27:24Speaker 6: really want to talk to him and.
- 27:25Speaker 7: See like how like how he did that?
- 27:28Speaker 6: Like you know, that's the It's only been one perfect
- 27:29Speaker 6: man to walk this world, and it was Jesus Christ,
- 27:32Speaker 6: and they crucifix him and just constantly just just just
- 27:35Speaker 6: just went down to him, and I just want to
- 27:37Speaker 6: really just pick his mind and see like.
- 27:38Speaker 7: Like how did he do that? Like how did he have.
- 27:41Speaker 6: So much persistence through through so much adversity and to
- 27:44Speaker 6: where he was able to carry the the weight of
- 27:48Speaker 6: everybody in the world sins and fulfilled prophecy and and really,
- 27:52Speaker 6: you know, for the better man of humanity, to give
- 27:54Speaker 6: humanity another chance have to fall in so short from
- 27:57Speaker 6: God's grace to give humanity another.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Shot, you know, salvation with our creator.
- 28:02Speaker 6: So you know, I'll we just pick his mind and
- 28:04Speaker 6: just just ask him just about how it was, how
- 28:07Speaker 6: he was able to do the things.
- 28:08Speaker 7: That he was able to do.
- 28:10Speaker 1: You're off the hot seat. I appreciate your time. Welcome
- 28:12Speaker 1: to Cincinnati.
