- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:33Today's episode is all about something amazing that's inside
- 0:37your head right now. It helps you think, feel, dream,
- 0:41and even move your fingers and toes.
- 0:45That's right, we're talking about your brain.
- 0:47Get ready for some super cool human brain trivia.
- 0:51Let's see how many answers you can get, right?
- 0:54Remember, after each question you'll have a few seconds to
- 0:58think before I reveal the answer.
- 1:00Let's get started. Here comes our first question.
- 1:04What is the main job of the human brain?
- 1:10The answer is the brain controls everything you do, from thinking
- 1:15and learning to breathing and moving.
- 1:18It's the boss of your whole body.
- 1:20Next question about how much does an adult human brain weigh?
- 1:24About as much as a loaf of bread, a soccer ball, or a bag
- 1:28of apples. The answer is a human brain
- 1:35weighs about as much as a loaf of bread, or around 3 lbs.
- 1:40That's about 1/4 kilograms. Here's another one.
- 1:44Which part of your body uses the most energy from the food you
- 1:48eat? Your legs, your stomach, or your
- 1:51brain? The answer is your brain.
- 1:58Even though it's small, your brain uses about 20% of the
- 2:02energy from the food you eat. Here comes a tricky question.
- 2:06True or false? Your brain feels pain when you
- 2:10get a headache. The answer is false.
- 2:17The brain itself doesn't have pain sensors, so it can't feel
- 2:21pain when you have a headache. It's actually other parts around
- 2:24your brain that are hurting. Time for a cool one.
- 2:28What is the wrinkly outer layer of your brain called?
- 2:32Is it the cortex, the cerebellum, or the brain stem?
- 2:40The answer is the cortex. The cerebral cortex is the
- 2:45wrinkly part on the outside of your brain.
- 2:47All those folds help fit lots of brain cells into a small space.
- 2:52Let's try this About how many brain cells does a human brain
- 2:56have? About 100 thousand?
- 2:59100 million? Or 100 billion?
- 3:06The answer is about 100 billion. That's more brain cells or
- 3:11neurons than there are stars in our Galaxy.
- 3:14Here's a quick one. What is the name of the gap
- 3:17between two brain cells where messages jump from one to
- 3:21another? The answer is that gap is called
- 3:28a synapse. Messages cross synapses using
- 3:31tiny chemicals called neurotransmitters.
- 3:34Now for something amazing, How fast can your brain send
- 3:38messages? Is it about one mile per hour,
- 3:4220 mph, or over 200 mph? The answer is over 200 mph.
- 3:54Brain signals can travel super fast along special cells called
- 3:58neurons. Let's go a little deeper.
- 4:01What is the part of your brain that helps you balance and
- 4:04coordinate your movements? Is it called the cerebellum, the
- 4:07hippocampus, or the medulla? The answer is the cerebellum.
- 4:17It's a small part of the back of your brain that helps you keep
- 4:20your balance and move smoothly. Here's another Which part of
- 4:24your brain helps you remember things and learn new
- 4:27information? The hippocampus, the pituitary
- 4:30gland, or the pons? The answer is the hippocampus.
- 4:40It's shaped a bit like a seahorse and is super important
- 4:43for memory. OK, here's a fun one.
- 4:46Is your brain more active when you're awake or when you're
- 4:49asleep? The answer is your brain is
- 4:56actually very active when you're asleep.
- 4:59It does important jobs like sorting memories and helping
- 5:02your body grow. Let's try something about your
- 5:05senses. Which part of your brain helps
- 5:07you see? Is it the occipital lobe, the
- 5:10frontal lobe or the temporal lobe?
- 5:17The answer is the occipital lobe.
- 5:20It's at the back of your brain and helps you process everything
- 5:24you see. Ready for another?
- 5:26What percentage of your brain do you use?
- 5:2910 percent, 50%, or almost all of it?
- 5:37The answer is you use almost all of your brain.
- 5:41The idea that we only use 10% is a myth.
- 5:44Now for a smell question, which part of your brain helps you
- 5:48recognize smells? The olfactory bulb, the brain
- 5:51stem, or the amygdala? The answer is the olfactory
- 6:00bulb. It's at the front of your brain
- 6:03and helps you notice and remember different smells.
- 6:06Here's a quick one. What is the largest part of your
- 6:09brain called? The cerebrum, the thalamus or
- 6:13the hypothalamus? The answer is the cerebrum.
- 6:21It makes up most of your brain and is responsible for thinking,
- 6:25speaking, and decision making. Here's a challenging one.
- 6:30What is the thick bundle of nerves that connects the left
- 6:33and right halves of your brain called?
- 6:35Is it the corpus callosum, the spinal cord, or the optic nerve?
- 6:44The answer is the corpus callosum.
- 6:48It lets the two sides of your brain talk to each other.
- 6:51Time for a fun fact. Can your brain grow new
- 6:54connections when you learn something new?
- 6:57Yes or no? The answer is yes.
- 7:05When you learn, your brain grows new connections between brain
- 7:09cells, which helps you remember. Let's talk about reflexes.
- 7:13What part of your nervous system controls quick reactions like
- 7:17pulling your hand away from something hot?
- 7:20Is it your brain, your spinal cord, or your heart?
- 7:27The answer is your spinal cord. It handles fast reflexes before
- 7:32your brain even knows what happened.
- 7:35Here's another cool question. What is the name for the folds
- 7:39and bumps on your brain surface? Are they called gyri and sulci,
- 7:43lobes or ventricles? The answer is gyri and sulci.
- 7:53They make your brain surface look all wrinkly and help fit
- 7:57more brain power into your head. Let's try a taste question.
- 8:01Which part of your brain helps you taste food, the temporal
- 8:04lobe, the insula, or the occipital lobe?
- 8:11The answer is the insula. It's deep inside your brain and
- 8:16helps you taste and enjoy your food.
- 8:19Here's a memory question. When you remember your first day
- 8:22at school, which part of your brain is working hard?
- 8:25The cerebellum, the hippocampus or the brain stem?
- 8:34The answer is the hippocampus. It's especially important for
- 8:39remembering events and facts. Ready for one about growth?
- 8:43Which tiny part of your brain controls hormones and helps you
- 8:46grow? The pituitary gland, the
- 8:49medulla, or the thalamus? The answer is the pituitary
- 8:58gland. It's sometimes called the master
- 9:01gland because it helps control growth and other hormones.
- 9:05Here's a language question. Which side of your brain is
- 9:08usually more active when you speak or right, Left or right?
- 9:16The answer is the left side. For most people, the left side
- 9:21of the brain controls language skills.
- 9:23Let's finish with something amazing your brain is made
- 9:28mostly of what? Bone, muscle, or water?
- 9:36The answer is water. About 75% of your brain is
- 9:41water, which is why it's important to stay hydrated.
- 9:45And now it's time for today's super challenge question.
- 9:49This one is extra tricky, so get ready.
- 9:52What is the longest cell in your body and how does it connect to
- 9:56your brain? The answer is the longest cell
- 10:04in your body is a motor neuron. Some motor neurons stretch all
- 10:08the way from your lower back to your toes, sending signals from
- 10:12your brain and spinal cord to your muscles.
- 10:15Thanks for playing along with today's human brain Trivia.
- 10:18Whether you got every answer right or learned something new,
- 10:22you just gave your brain a great workout.
- 10:25Keep asking questions and stay curious.
