- 0:00SPEAKER_00: If you're dating again after a divorce and you don't want any more kids, don't underestimate the chances of getting someone pregnant.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: You're back in the birth control business.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Maybe your ex handled most of it.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe you haven't used condoms in years.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: And maybe you're dating someone who still could get pregnant.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: And if another child would seriously change the life you're building now, well, we'll be careful is not much of a plan.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And at some point, is sex worth the risk?
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: It becomes a real question.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And that's where permanent birth control starts to become a real consideration.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: But before you go there, there is one thing I'd want you to be very sure about.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: We're in vasectomy clinics in Chicago.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: We focus exclusively on vasectomy.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: So we have this conversation with men every day.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about it.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Are you really done having kids?
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: There's a difference between I'm getting a divorce and I don't want any more kids.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: After divorce, your next relationship may look very different from your last one.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: You may meet someone younger.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You may date someone who has never had children.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: Or you may meet someone who absolutely wants kids.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So before you make any permanent decisions, you need to know whether I don't want more kids still holds up if the right person comes along.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: If the answer is maybe with the right woman, I could see it, then keep your options open.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: If the answer is no, I love my kids, but that part of my life is complete, then you're in a different position.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And once you're really sure about that, the next issue gets real very quickly.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Because now you have to decide how you're actually going to prevent another pregnancy.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: What are you relying on now?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're using condoms.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe the woman you're dating uses birth control.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And either can work.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: But if another pregnancy would be a major problem, you should know exactly what you're relying on and how much room for failure you're comfortable with.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: That is especially true if you've been out of the dating world for a long time.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: You may not have had to think about or manage birth control for years, but now you do.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And that's one of the reasons vasectomy comes up for men in this stage of life.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Because for a man who is genuinely done having children, vasectomy is one way to make pregnancy prevention something he controls instead of having faith that it's being managed by his partner in every new relationship.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But there is an important limit to what a vasectomy gives you.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So vasectomy solves one problem, but not all of them.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: A vasectomy is about pregnancy prevention, but it does not protect you from sexually transmitted infection.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: That means if you're dating new partners, condoms can still be important even after you've had this vasectomy.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I'd separate those two issues completely.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: One is whether you can cause a pregnancy.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: The other is about protecting your sexual health.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: A vasectomy only addresses the first one.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: That's important because permanent birth control can sound like you never have to think about protection again.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: But if you're dating, that's not the case.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And once men understand that, there's another question that comes up.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: What is a vasectomy going to change about sex itself?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: What actually changes sexually?
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: This is one of the biggest concerns men have before vasectomy.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: They worry about testosterone, erections, sex drive, ejaculation, and whether sex is somehow going to feel different afterwards.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: A vasectomy is not designed to change any of those things.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: You still produce testosterone, you still get erections, and you still have a sex drive, and you still ejaculate.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: What changes is that sperm no longer enter the semen.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: So physically, sex should still feel the exact same.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: What can change is the worry around it.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: If you already know you do not want another child, every new relationship comes with the same underlying question.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: How are we preventing pregnancy?
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Once a vasectomy has been confirmed successful, at least that part can come off your plate.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: You're no longer relying on a partner's birth control to prevent a pregnancy that you don't want.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: For a man starting over after divorce, a vasectomy can take a lot of the worry out of sex.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: But there is one important word in what I just said.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: It's confirmed.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Because that peace of mind does not start on the day of the procedure.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: You are not sterile right away.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: After a vasectomy, there can still be sperm remaining in the reproductive tract.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So even if everything goes perfectly, you still need to use contraception until testing confirms that you are sterile.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Feeling normal does not mean you're sterile.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And until the semen analysis confirms that sperm are gone, pregnancy is still possible.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: At vasectomy clinics in Chicago, we don't confirm sterility until the testing shows it.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: We don't treat the surgery itself as the finish line.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Confirmed sterility is the finish line.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So when does a vasectomy make sense after divorce?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: I'd look at it this way: if there's any real part of you that could want another child in the future, choose a less permanent form of birth control.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: If you know you are done having kids, regardless of who you meet next, then permanent birth control becomes much more reasonable.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: And if you want pregnancy prevention to be something you control directly, vasectomy is one option worth considering.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: At our practice, we perform no needle, no scalpel vasectomies in the office with local anesthesia.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: The appointment itself is usually less than 30 minutes, and most of our patients return to work the next day.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: But we don't schedule the procedure without seeing you first.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Every one of our patients comes in for a consultation and physical exam with one of our physicians.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And during that appointment, we'll review your history, look at your anatomy, talk through any concerns, and make sure an in-office vasectomy is appropriate for you.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Not every man is the same, and not every case should be approached the same way.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: One more thing before you decide.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: There's a difference between making a permanent decision because you're positive you don't want any more children, versus making a hasty decision based on a failed relationship.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: That's probably the biggest thing I'd want a divorce man to think about.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you're six months out from a bad marriage and everything about your old life feels like something you want to close the door on, give yourself enough time to know what you actually want next.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: But if you've thought it through, you know you do not want any more children, and you want to remove pregnancy risk from the next chapter of your life, then it makes sense to look seriously at permanent birth control.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And if vasectomy is the option you're considering, get your questions answered before you make that decision.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: If you're considering a vasectomy, schedule a consultation with vasectomy clinics of Chicago.
