- 0:02Speaker 1: Take her out to picture, would he still be living?
- 0:07Speaker 1: So she was the main cause.
- 0:10Speaker 2: He was going to go on a date. He just
- 0:12Speaker 2: thought he was going on a date. About to go
- 0:14Speaker 2: on a date.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Good morning to you all.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Good morning, everybody.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I feel so bad for you, Jennifer. I know this
- 0:30Speaker 3: started January 23rd, first period science class, out of nowhere.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 3: First, it's kind of funny. It's not funny, is it?
- 0:38Speaker 5: Not no more, it's not.
- 0:39Speaker 6: No.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Not at all. If you have a cure for the hiccups,
- 0:41Speaker 3: she needs you.
- 0:42Speaker 7: She's hiccuping 24 hours a day.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Tonight, from media sensation to murderer.
- 0:49Speaker 8: If we take the facts as truth, she lured a
- 0:51Speaker 8: guy under false pretenses and he wound up dead.
- 0:53Speaker 9: Lock her up.
- 0:54Speaker 3: That's it.
- 1:00Speaker 2: What do you feel like to be called a murderer?
- 1:04Speaker 5: And it's like, damn, why did I do what I did?
- 1:13Speaker 5: Why did I hang out with the people that I
- 1:15Speaker 5: hung out with? Why did I do this and why
- 1:17Speaker 5: did I do that? And now I will carry this
- 1:21Speaker 5: title for the rest of my life.
- 1:22Speaker 10: Well, you'll carry two titles. You know, you were the
- 1:25Speaker 10: hiccup girl and now you're the murderer.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I'll never forget it.
- 1:30Speaker 5: When I first came on this compound, I had a
- 1:34Speaker 5: lady actually tell me, she was like, aren't you the
- 1:35Speaker 5: hiccup killer? And I just looked at her like, and
- 1:40Speaker 5: I just kept going because there's no justifying to what
- 1:50Speaker 5: took place that night.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I have a free call from.
- 2:10Speaker 11: Jennifer, me.
- 2:11Speaker 4: An inmate at Pinellas County Jail.
- 2:15Speaker 12: Hi, Mama.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Hello, Jennifer.
- 2:17Speaker 13: What's going on?
- 2:18Speaker 3: I'm in jail.
- 2:20Speaker 14: Why are you in jail?
- 2:21Speaker 3: For murder in the first degree.
- 2:24Speaker 15: Who'd you kill?
- 2:24Speaker 3: I ain't killed nobody.
- 2:27Speaker 13: Well, then how are they charging you with murder? Because
- 2:29Speaker 13: I set everything up.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Who were you trying to kill, Jennifer?
- 2:34Speaker 12: Nobody.
- 2:34Speaker 16: It wasn't supposed to happen like that, Mom.
- 2:37Speaker 13: Mom, I'll call you when I can because I gotta.
- 2:42Speaker 14: Go.
- 2:42Speaker 16: Mommy's trying to make visitation, please.
- 2:45Speaker 13: All right, Jennifer, I love you.
- 2:47Speaker 15: I love you too, Mom.
- 2:50Speaker 7: We're learning now more about the murder arrest of the
- 2:52Speaker 7: Florida teenager who gained fame for her persistent case of hiccups.
- 2:56Speaker 2: This case can be seen as a tragedy on several levels.
- 2:59Speaker 11: Certainly for the family of the victim, also for Jennifer
- 3:02Speaker 11: Mee's family.
- 3:03Speaker 15: I'm worried about my daughter right now, and I'd like
- 3:05Speaker 15: some privacy. Jennifer Mee's mother seems stunned by the murder
- 3:08Speaker 15: charge facing her daughter.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Can you tell me what your family's going.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Through right now, ma'am?
- 3:14Speaker 2: America was gripped by the unfolding story of the so-called
- 3:18Speaker 2: Hiccup Girl, now charged with murder. I was heading to
- 3:25Speaker 2: the crime scene with Dave Wozinski, the lead homicide detective
- 3:29Speaker 2: on the case, and one of the first to arrive
- 3:31Speaker 2: here that night. The victim was 22-year-old Shannon Griffin, a
- 3:38Speaker 2: talented high school footballer who had moved here from Mississippi.
- 3:43Speaker 2: He thought he was going on a date with Jennifer,
- 3:47Speaker 2: but she and her accomplices had other ideas. When you
- 3:51Speaker 2: got here, what was your gut reaction about what may
- 3:54Speaker 2: have happened?
- 3:54Speaker 11: We're really close to downtown, and... On a Saturday night,
- 3:58Speaker 11: it wouldn't be uncommon for someone to come downtown to
- 4:00Speaker 11: possibly look for narcotics or something have gone wrong during
- 4:04Speaker 11: a narcotic exchange. So you start in your mind, you
- 4:06Speaker 11: start thinking, okay, this is either a drug deal that
- 4:08Speaker 11: went bad or a robbery that went bad.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Were you to start with of the belief that Jennifer
- 4:13Speaker 2: Mee was involved or did you think that she was
- 4:15Speaker 2: just the girlfriend of one of the guys who died?
- 4:17Speaker 11: We had her come to the station, and then very quickly,
- 4:20Speaker 11: based upon the interviews that we did, it became very
- 4:22Speaker 11: apparent that she was involved. She was the prime person
- 4:25Speaker 11: who contacted the victim, who was Shanon Griffin. She contacted him,
- 4:29Speaker 11: she brought him down here, she lured him here, and
- 4:31Speaker 11: they were all gonna try to get some money from him.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Do you think that he thought he was coming on
- 4:35Speaker 2: some kind of date?
- 4:37Speaker 11: I think he thought he was coming to meet a girl,
- 4:39Speaker 11: that it was gonna be a social activity, and possibly
- 4:42Speaker 11: a small amount of marijuana was gonna be sold. But
- 4:44Speaker 11: I think that based upon the way he was dressed,
- 4:47Speaker 11: In the conversation that he had with his family before leaving,
- 4:50Speaker 11: number one, he was coming to meet a girl. That
- 4:52Speaker 11: shouldn't be a death sentence.
- 5:03Speaker 14: All rise, please.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Everybody in the jail, please stand. Raise your right hand
- 5:08Speaker 2: to receive the oath.
- 5:10Speaker 17: Jennifer Meek.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Hi, this is me.
- 5:17Speaker 11: The allegation is murder in the first degree.
- 5:23Speaker 17: I do find probable cause.
- 5:24Speaker 7: Your bond is currently zero.
- 5:25Speaker 17: Can you appoint a lawyer to help you?
- 5:27Speaker 16: OK.
- 5:28Speaker 7: All right, I'll appoint a lawyer to represent you.
- 5:33Speaker 2: What fascinated America was this basic question. Even though Jennifer
- 5:38Speaker 2: didn't pull the trigger, had this seemingly innocent teenager knowingly
- 5:43Speaker 2: lured a man to his death? Jennifer is currently serving
- 5:49Speaker 2: a life sentence with little possibility of ever being released. Jennifer,
- 5:55Speaker 2: how are you?
- 5:56Speaker 3: Good, how are you, sir?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Good to meet you.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Nice to meet you, too.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Come with us. I've been granted an hour with the
- 6:02Speaker 2: hiccup girl. Just this way. Is this a prison tattoo?
- 6:12Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 2: What is it?
- 6:13Speaker 3: JDD.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Who does that in there?
- 6:15Speaker 3: I'm not allowed to talk about that.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Oh, you're not?
- 6:17Speaker 14: No.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So someone does it as a hacker. This guy, Shanon,
- 6:23Speaker 2: he's a nice guy. He came to the area from
- 6:28Speaker 2: Katrina where the hurricane had decimated so many lives. He,
- 6:33Speaker 2: like so many people, was attracted initially to you because
- 6:39Speaker 2: you were famous. You were the hiccup girl.
- 6:43Speaker 3: I could say that then most likely, yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Because back then a lot of people befriended me because
- 6:50Speaker 5: of the name that I had gotten and of course
- 6:52Speaker 5: the 15 minutes of fame.
- 6:53Speaker 3: You know what I mean, so.
- 6:55Speaker 10: What is your motivation for interacting with him?
- 6:59Speaker 3: At that time it was to sell drugs.
- 7:01Speaker 5: I didn't know nothing more, nothing less of the situation
- 7:05Speaker 5: that end up occurring.
- 7:07Speaker 2: He thinks he's on a date. He tells his cousin
- 7:10Speaker 2: he's going on a date.
- 7:12Speaker 5: See, and when I heard that, I was like, I
- 7:14Speaker 5: was blowed by it because last I knew he was
- 7:16Speaker 5: buying marijuana.
- 7:17Speaker 3: I didn't know nothing about no date.
- 7:18Speaker 10: We know he made himself look very smart that night.
- 7:22Speaker 10: He put on cologne. He told his cousin he was
- 7:24Speaker 10: going on a date.
- 7:25Speaker 2: He clearly had been led to believe by you that
- 7:28Speaker 2: this was perhaps partly to get some marijuana, but also
- 7:32Speaker 2: to have a date with you. Had you given him
- 7:35Speaker 2: any reason to think that?
- 7:37Speaker 3: Not that I can remember to tell you the truth.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I don't.
- 7:39Speaker 5: Remember like 100% facts of what really led up to
- 7:44Speaker 5: everything that night.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I mean, I suppose, Jennifer, what I would say is
- 7:48Speaker 2: you're not stupid. No. I can tell you're not stupid.
- 7:51Speaker 2: You're street smart.
- 7:54Speaker 10: It seems very odd to me that you can't remember
- 7:58Speaker 10: such critical parts of this because obviously the only reason
- 8:02Speaker 10: Shanon is dead is because you lured him to a
- 8:06Speaker 10: situation where he ends up dying. And so I would
- 8:08Speaker 10: have thought that your brain, especially sitting here for the
- 8:11Speaker 10: rest of your life, that your brain would think all
- 8:14Speaker 10: the time about the sequence of events, and yet you
- 8:17Speaker 10: seem incredibly vague.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Take her out the picture, would he still be living?
- 8:27Speaker 1: So she was the main cause.
- 8:32Speaker 15: Can't ever accept her being called a murderer. I know
- 8:37Speaker 15: what her conviction was, but I also know who she
- 8:40Speaker 15: is as a person.
- 8:55Speaker 12: On that night, Jennifer Mee had contacted Shanon Griffin for
- 9:00Speaker 12: the purposes of bringing him to downtown St. Petersburg so
- 9:05Speaker 12: that they could conduct a drug transaction. Part of that
- 9:10Speaker 12: conversation would have possibly included a date with Jennifer May.
- 9:16Speaker 18: Mr.
- 9:16Speaker 12: Griffin gets dressed up in new clothes, puts on cologne,
- 9:20Speaker 12: rides his motor scooter to the area. He meets with
- 9:24Speaker 12: Jennifer May in the front alleyway of a house that
- 9:27Speaker 12: was for sale. She indicates that the people that sell
- 9:31Speaker 12: them the marijuana are located down the alleyway. He is
- 9:36Speaker 12: confronted by Lamont Newton and Mr.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Leron Rayford.
- 9:40Speaker 12: They probably asked for his money. A struggle ensued where
- 9:45Speaker 12: a gun was pulled.
- 9:47Speaker 11: It's obvious there was a pretty good physical struggle that happened.
- 9:51Speaker 11: It seems to me that Shanon was winning. That's probably
- 9:55Speaker 11: the decision. At that point, when you're starting to lose
- 9:58Speaker 11: a fight, one of the problems with bringing a gun
- 10:00Speaker 11: to a fight is then now what do you do?
- 10:17Speaker 2: In Florida, if you commit a robbery and somebody dies,
- 10:21Speaker 2: everyone involved can be charged with murder. Which might explain
- 10:28Speaker 2: why Jennifer didn't mention the robbery in her first police interview.
- 10:34Speaker 4: Hello, this is Detective Gary Gibson. It's Sunday, 10-24-2010. With
- 10:38Speaker 4: me is Jennifer. Me, we're talking about a homicide that
- 10:41Speaker 4: occurred last night. Who was the aggressor?
- 10:45Speaker 3: I don't know what that is.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Who was the one upset?
- 10:50Speaker 13: When Leron found out that he had some type of
- 10:52Speaker 13: relation going on with his girlfriend, Leron snapped, grabbed the
- 10:56Speaker 13: man up, choked him, and pulled the gun out of
- 10:58Speaker 13: the book bag and put it to the man's head
- 10:59Speaker 13: and told the man not to say anything and brought
- 11:01Speaker 13: the man to the back of the house and shot him.
- 11:05Speaker 7: In police audio recordings, Jennifer is heard giving two versions
- 11:09Speaker 7: of what took place that night. First, she says the
- 11:12Speaker 7: shooting was part of a love triangle involving the victim,
- 11:15Speaker 7: Shanon Griffin, one of the suspects Leron.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Why did you lie?
- 11:19Speaker 3: I was afraid. I'm not even gonna lie, I was afraid.
- 11:22Speaker 5: When I started thinking about everything, I was like, oh
- 11:25Speaker 5: my goodness, I could possibly be going to prison for
- 11:29Speaker 5: the rest of my life, because I know in the
- 11:31Speaker 5: state of Florida, if you are charged with, I think,
- 11:37Speaker 5: I forget what they call it, principle or something like that,
- 11:39Speaker 5: you're just as guilty as the person that has pulled
- 11:41Speaker 5: the trigger.
- 11:42Speaker 10: I mean, this is an unbelievable moment. You're a 19-year-old girl,
- 11:46Speaker 10: No criminal record. You're with other people who, although they're
- 11:50Speaker 10: a bit dodgy, also have no criminal records. And suddenly
- 11:54Speaker 10: you're facing life without parole for first-degree murder.
- 11:58Speaker 3: It was mind-blowing.
- 12:03Speaker 5: It was mind-blowing because in my mind I was like,
- 12:07Speaker 5: how could I be so young and dumb and naive
- 12:12Speaker 5: to fall into a trap so easily, so to speak?
- 12:16Speaker 5: Why couldn't I ever just have stayed home? Why couldn't
- 12:20Speaker 5: I have been a good daughter?
- 12:22Speaker 3: Why did I.
- 12:24Speaker 14: Why?
- 12:26Speaker 5: Why did I want to do my own thing? Why
- 12:29Speaker 5: did I not want to listen?
- 12:30Speaker 12: I've seen her cry at the verdict, and I've seen
- 12:40Speaker 12: her cry at the sentencing, but I don't confuse those
- 12:43Speaker 12: with being remorseful as to her actions.
- 12:49Speaker 15: She is a very lovable little girl, but unfortunately she's
- 12:52Speaker 15: very impressionable and she likes to do things to make
- 12:55Speaker 15: her friends happy.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Jennifer's mother and sisters had agreed to meet me. They've
- 13:13Speaker 2: moved to Tennessee, but today they're back in Florida and
- 13:16Speaker 2: had just made a rare visit to see her in prison.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Hi there.
- 13:26Speaker 17: How are you?
- 13:27Speaker 2: Good to see you. Good to see you as well.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Hi there.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I'm Piers. Good to see you.
- 13:33Speaker 13: Hello.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Hello.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Oh, she doesn't seem very happy. I'm Piers. Good to
- 13:38Speaker 2: see you. So you've just been to the prison I
- 13:40Speaker 2: hear to see Jennifer. How was that for you guys,
- 13:44Speaker 2: her little sisters? Emotional.
- 13:47Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 13:48Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 13:49Speaker 2: How often have you actually physically been able to see her?
- 13:52Speaker 16: Like six times since we moved.
- 13:54Speaker 2: They're very hard for her, of course, when.
- 13:55Speaker 4: You all leave.
- 13:56Speaker 3: She cries a lot whenever we leave.
- 13:58Speaker 2: What do you feel about what happened to her?
- 14:00Speaker 16: That it wasn't fair.
- 14:02Speaker 14: Why?
- 14:03Speaker 3: Because I feel like she was sentenced too long. In
- 14:07Speaker 3: different states, you want to get that long, and different
- 14:10Speaker 3: people want to.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Get that much. I mean, you knew her better than
- 14:13Speaker 2: most people. Yeah.
- 14:15Speaker 10: To lure a guy that she didn't know... through social media.
- 14:20Speaker 5: She followed whatever other people wanted her to follow, and
- 14:22Speaker 5: if she was by herself or with her family, she
- 14:24Speaker 5: wouldn't ever do anything like that.
- 14:25Speaker 16: She was much different when she was around us, but
- 14:27Speaker 16: when she was with her partner, she was just, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 16: her friends or her partner, she was just a completely
- 14:33Speaker 16: different person.
- 14:33Speaker 2: She just acted all big and bad.
- 14:35Speaker 16: And just tried to stick out.
- 14:36Speaker 2: What kind of girl was Jennifer when she was growing up?
- 14:49Speaker 15: She was always very happy, always wanted to be the
- 14:53Speaker 15: little mother to her younger siblings. She helped me in
- 14:56Speaker 15: so many ways with her sisters growing up, whether it
- 14:59Speaker 15: be getting a bottle for them when they were very young,
- 15:02Speaker 15: to wanting to read stories to them when she could
- 15:04Speaker 15: read herself, and just a joy to be around.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Was she well behaved?
- 15:09Speaker 15: Always until we moved to Florida and she started being
- 15:13Speaker 15: in a area where, you know, she became a teenager
- 15:17Speaker 15: and things were a lot different from where we lived
- 15:19Speaker 15: in a very small town in Vermont. She started wanting
- 15:21Speaker 15: to explore. She started getting a little bit rebellious because
- 15:25Speaker 15: her and her stepdad didn't always see eye to eye.
- 15:27Speaker 15: That kind of brings us to where she had the
- 15:29Speaker 15: hiccups and it got a little bit worse because she
- 15:31Speaker 15: felt like, you know, who are you to tell me
- 15:33Speaker 15: what to do? Do you know who I am type
- 15:35Speaker 15: attitude towards her stepfather?
- 15:36Speaker 10: Can you believe that Jennifer got herself into a situation
- 15:41Speaker 10: where she would lure somebody she didn't know on the
- 15:45Speaker 10: internet for the very least a beating.
- 15:49Speaker 15: I find it very hard to believe and I do
- 15:51Speaker 15: know that it happened I don't believe that she was
- 15:56Speaker 15: the mastermind as people called her behind that I've been
- 16:00Speaker 15: told that it was the guys trying to get her
- 16:02Speaker 15: to do that and she just basically went along as
- 16:04Speaker 15: a bait if you will Jennifer on her own I
- 16:07Speaker 15: don't believe would ever do anything like that Have you.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Ever tried to contact the family of.
- 16:13Speaker 15: I talked to her during the trial, his mom, and
- 16:17Speaker 15: told her that I would basically give any limb in
- 16:20Speaker 15: my body to have things change from what happened that night.
- 16:23Speaker 15: Gave her a hug, told her how sorry I was.
- 16:24Speaker 2: She knew who you were, obviously.
- 16:26Speaker 15: During trial, we were in the cafeteria.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Did she say anything to you when you did that?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Just gave me a hug and.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Really, what can you say?
- 16:55Speaker 2: The murder victim, Shenon Griffin, had grown up here in Petal, Mississippi,
- 17:00Speaker 2: which had been hard hit by Hurricane Katrina. At school,
- 17:09Speaker 2: he was passionate about football and was an outstanding player.
- 17:24Speaker 19: I would hope that he fought for his life. I
- 17:26Speaker 19: would hope that his family and his coaches and his
- 17:31Speaker 19: peers had instilled in him that want to live and
- 17:34Speaker 19: that fight.
- 17:36Speaker 1: They couldn't have did it without a gun, because he
- 17:38Speaker 1: was that tough.
- 17:41Speaker 18: It's just a waste.
- 17:43Speaker 19: Of Shanon's life, of course, and of the three people
- 17:46Speaker 19: that were involved as well.
- 17:47Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 17:48Speaker 2: It's a waste of their lives.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Even today, his grandmother's still dealing with it, because when
- 17:52Speaker 1: I talked to her about it a couple days ago,
- 17:54Speaker 1: she just broke out in tears. She haven't got over
- 17:56Speaker 1: it yet. She's still suffering the loss, and it'll probably
- 18:01Speaker 1: be with her the rest of her life.
- 18:02Speaker 2: She can't even talk about it anymore.
- 18:04Speaker 1: That's how hurt she are.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Do you accept that if you hadn't lured him that
- 18:14Speaker 2: night in the way that you did, that he'd still
- 18:18Speaker 2: be alive?
- 18:18Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know what you mean by.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Well, let me spell it out for you.
- 18:26Speaker 10: You were the one that he contacted on the social
- 18:29Speaker 10: network site. You were the one that encouraged him to
- 18:33Speaker 10: come over, knowing he was at the very best gonna
- 18:36Speaker 10: get a.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Beating and be robbed. So you had all the power here.
- 18:40Speaker 10: You're the person he knows, albeit just through a social
- 18:44Speaker 10: network page. So you had the power to either lure
- 18:49Speaker 10: him to what happened or not.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Sometimes I wish, I wish I would have been more, I.
- 19:06Speaker 5: Don't know what the proper word to use is, more,
- 19:08Speaker 5: I don't wanna say open-minded, but more alerted to the situation.
- 19:13Speaker 10: More of a decent human being, Jennifer. I mean, let's
- 19:17Speaker 10: be brutally honest here. At the time, you were doing
- 19:19Speaker 10: loads of drugs. You were selling loads of drugs. You know,
- 19:22Speaker 10: it's a descent into a pretty dark kind of life.
- 19:26Speaker 10: There's a gun, and then this guy gets sucked into this,
- 19:30Speaker 10: and the gun ends up being used to kill him.
- 19:34Speaker 10: This is not a world of, I wouldn't hurt a fly.
- 19:38Speaker 10: This is a world of, you come into this world,
- 19:40Speaker 10: something bad's going to happen to you.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I mean, people have their own opinions. It is what
- 19:53Speaker 3: it is. But also at the same time, he didn't
- 19:57Speaker 3: deserve to die. He didn't.
- 19:59Speaker 5: And, you know.
- 20:00Speaker 10: What I'm trying to get inside is your.
- 20:04Speaker 10: How much responsibility you're prepared to take. You're serving life
- 20:07Speaker 10: without parole. As things stand, you'll never come out of here, right?
- 20:10Speaker 10: You've nothing to lose by being completely honest about this.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And I hear you.
- 20:16Speaker 10: Saying, I'd never heard a fly, everybody knows that. And
- 20:19Speaker 10: then I also hear you say, yeah, I got this
- 20:23Speaker 10: guy over and he was going to get beaten up,
- 20:24Speaker 10: he was going to get robbed. That doesn't sit very
- 20:27Speaker 10: easily with, I wouldn't have heard a fly.
- 20:29Speaker 5: I understand what you're saying, but also in the same
- 20:32Speaker 5: perspective of everything, is when somebody tells me they want weed.
- 20:36Speaker 5: I tell my co-defendant, the one that does deal with
- 20:39Speaker 5: the weed, listen, somebody wants weed.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Okay, tell him. I don't know if I have the weed.
- 20:46Speaker 3: Tell him I have the weed and we'll meet. Okay,
- 20:50Speaker 3: that's what I do.
- 20:51Speaker 10: You introduce him to the two guys and then you disappear.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Why do you disappear?
- 20:57Speaker 5: Because I thought they were going to just... I don't
- 21:01Speaker 5: want to say beat him up because it was two
- 21:03Speaker 5: against one, you know what I mean? Not both of
- 21:05Speaker 5: my co-defendants aren't, like, big guys, you know what I mean?
- 21:08Speaker 3: But for one dude, you know what I mean?
- 21:10Speaker 5: I thought they could, you know, get what they were
- 21:12Speaker 5: going to get from him and then go on about
- 21:14Speaker 5: their business.
- 21:15Speaker 2: But get that how?
- 21:16Speaker 10: By physically dealing with him?
- 21:19Speaker 5: Yeah, not, you know, trying to kill him.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Because who would want... Now, this is how I think.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Why would somebody want to kill somebody over whatever, how much,
- 21:27Speaker 5: half ounce of weed is what? $ 55 or something like that,
- 21:32Speaker 5: $ 55 or $ 60.
- 21:33Speaker 3: Why would somebody want to kill somebody over that? I still,
- 21:35Speaker 3: to this day, I don't understand that.
- 21:37Speaker 10: He was killed because he put up a fight. He's
- 21:39Speaker 10: a big guy, it turned out. And he's got these
- 21:41Speaker 10: two blokes trying to rob him.
- 21:44Speaker 2: And so he puts up a fight, as a lot
- 21:46Speaker 2: of people would. You know that he's going to get robbed,
- 21:49Speaker 2: and you know he's going to get a beating. It's
- 21:51Speaker 2: not a massive leap to imagine, particularly if there's a
- 21:55Speaker 2: gun in the house, that this could escalate very quickly
- 21:57Speaker 2: into something very nasty.
- 21:58Speaker 14: I mean.
- 21:59Speaker 2: How shocked really could you be?
- 22:02Speaker 5: People ask me all the time, they're like, did you
- 22:04Speaker 5: know about this gun? I was like, no, I didn't
- 22:06Speaker 5: know there was a gun involved until after I got arrested.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Right, but you did know that they had a gun?
- 22:12Speaker 3: No, I didn't know. I did not know.
- 22:14Speaker 2: You told the police that you were aware of a
- 22:17Speaker 2: gun a week before?
- 22:18Speaker 5: No, after the fact, after everything happened, of course I
- 22:22Speaker 5: knew there was a gun because he was shot and
- 22:24Speaker 5: killed three times.
- 22:25Speaker 2: But you told the.
- 22:25Speaker 10: Police that you were aware a week before there'd been
- 22:29Speaker 10: a gun?
- 22:29Speaker 2: A gun around.
- 22:31Speaker 3: No, I don't remember that.
- 22:32Speaker 5: I don't recall that at all because I didn't even know.
- 22:35Speaker 5: If I knew there was a gun in the house
- 22:36Speaker 5: that I lived in, I would have been in fear
- 22:37Speaker 5: for my own life. So I don't want to say
- 22:40Speaker 5: that I knew weeks prior to all this that there
- 22:42Speaker 5: was a gun in the house.
- 22:43Speaker 3: No, that's incorrect.
- 22:52Speaker 4: About five minutes ago, you identified a photo of a
- 22:57Speaker 4: revolver And you said a person's had that the last week,
- 23:02Speaker 4: had the gun. Who's that person?
- 23:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Do you know his last name?
- 23:06Speaker 5: Okay.
- 23:07Speaker 4: And that's the person who has had that gun.
- 23:09Speaker 20: Okay.
- 23:23Speaker 11: I don't give a damn who did it. I give
- 23:26Speaker 11: a damn about proving they did it.
- 23:33Speaker 12: Well, she told her mother in her own words that
- 23:35Speaker 12: she set the whole thing up.
- 23:42Speaker 5: Even now, it's like I still don't understand why they
- 23:45Speaker 5: shot and killed him. But LaRon had to sit there
- 23:51Speaker 5: and kill this young man.
- 24:04Speaker 2: How many bullets were actually fired and how many actually
- 24:06Speaker 2: hit Shanon?
- 24:08Speaker 11: It was a six-shot revolver. All six shots were fired.
- 24:11Speaker 11: Four struck Shanon Griffin. Three of them went center chest,
- 24:15Speaker 11: just a little bit over by the right side of
- 24:17Speaker 11: the nipple. One hit through the shoulder and was a
- 24:19Speaker 11: through and through. The three that went in the chest stayed.
- 24:21Speaker 11: The through and through, when it passed through his body,
- 24:24Speaker 11: changed direction and impacted on the building. And there's also
- 24:28Speaker 11: where you can see a visible sign back there. That's
- 24:30Speaker 11: where we believe the sixth round also impacted.
- 24:33Speaker 2: One of the really perplexing parts of all this is
- 24:36Speaker 2: that having shot Shannon dead, these two guys leave the
- 24:40Speaker 2: gun at the crime scene.
- 24:42Speaker 11: The fact that they left the murder weapon behind certainly
- 24:46Speaker 11: indicates the panic that was going on with them, depending
- 24:50Speaker 11: on which one you want to believe left the gun.
- 24:55Speaker 2: As Shannon was left for dead in the alleyway, Jennifer,
- 24:58Speaker 2: her boyfriend Lamont, and Laurent fled to an apartment on
- 25:02Speaker 2: the other side of the city. They had desperately tried
- 25:11Speaker 2: to cover their tracks. Blood-stained clothes were found soaking in bleach.
- 25:19Speaker 2: And the murder victim's wallet was found hidden in an
- 25:22Speaker 2: air vent. Jennifer, what are you thinking? You're now on
- 25:28Speaker 2: the run with.
- 25:31Speaker 10: Two people who've just killed somebody that you have lured
- 25:34Speaker 10: to their death, albeit not thinking he's gonna die, but
- 25:37Speaker 10: you've lured him to be robbed and beaten, and now
- 25:39Speaker 10: he's dead. And you're now on the run with the
- 25:41Speaker 10: people who shot him dead.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I had nowhere to go.
- 25:44Speaker 5: I was not gonna go back to my mom's house
- 25:46Speaker 5: and explain to my mom, oh, well, I'm back home
- 25:48Speaker 5: because I'm scared for my life now. I'm not gonna
- 25:51Speaker 5: put my mom in that predicament or danger when she.
- 25:53Speaker 3: Has four other kids.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Were you panicking?
- 25:56Speaker 3: Yes, I was panicking.
- 25:57Speaker 5: I mean, who in their right mind would want to
- 26:00Speaker 5: stay with somebody that just killed somebody, not knowing what
- 26:03Speaker 5: could be next?
- 26:03Speaker 2: Did you sleep with Lamont that night?
- 26:06Speaker 5: I don't even think we slept. I think we were
- 26:07Speaker 5: up all night. I was trying to wonder in my head, like,
- 26:11Speaker 5: what is going to happen next? What is going to
- 26:13Speaker 5: happen next? What is going to happen next? Are they
- 26:17Speaker 5: going to try to kill me?
- 26:18Speaker 10: The police eventually catch everybody. You're not initially part of
- 26:24Speaker 10: the investigation. They don't think you're involved. but you get interviewed,
- 26:29Speaker 10: and in the process of.
- 26:29Speaker 2: The interview, you.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Became involved.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Right. Why did you offer information in that moment?
- 26:37Speaker 5: Believe it or not, when everything was all said and
- 26:39Speaker 5: done and we were sitting in the house, LaRon was like, Jennifer,
- 26:43Speaker 5: you need to tell them you knew about everything because
- 26:46Speaker 5: you're the youngest, you know, you're already famous, you won't
- 26:50Speaker 5: get in trouble, so to speak. And I did just that,
- 26:53Speaker 5: and here I am now, six.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Years later, They thought you'd get off because you were
- 26:59Speaker 2: the Hiccup Girl.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Yeah, they thought my 15 minutes of fame would help
- 27:04Speaker 5: me in a situation, but it didn't.
- 27:07Speaker 17: Ms.
- 27:20Speaker 21: Mi's admissions to Detective Warinski evidencing her willingness to engage
- 27:25Speaker 21: in this violent conduct in this case and her lack
- 27:27Speaker 21: of appreciation for the consequences of such conduct speak for themselves.
- 27:33Speaker 21: The only two possible sentences if she were to be
- 27:35Speaker 21: convicted are the death penalty or life imprisonment.
- 27:47Speaker 2: The severity of the punishment Jennifer faced if found guilty
- 27:52Speaker 2: stunned many Americans. What is going on in the world?
- 27:57Speaker 2: She's on trial for murder. Hiccup girl on trial for murder.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Take a look at this.
- 28:01Speaker 8: And no one is claiming that she pulled the trigger,
- 28:03Speaker 8: but still facing murder charges.
- 28:04Speaker 6: That's right, felony murder. So if she had the intent
- 28:07Speaker 6: to commit the robbery and someone dies, she's on trial
- 28:11Speaker 6: now for felony murder. That's all they have to prove
- 28:14Speaker 6: in the context of this case is that she had
- 28:15Speaker 6: the intent to commit that robbery.
- 28:29Speaker 2: You offered to do her case pro bono, so you
- 28:32Speaker 2: wouldn't take a fee for that. Why was that?
- 28:35Speaker 18: Uh, it was a very high-profile case. Uh, she seemed like, uh...
- 28:42Speaker 18: kind of a cliche, but she seemed like a really
- 28:44Speaker 18: nice girl.
- 28:45Speaker 2: When you realize what the police had in this case, particularly...
- 28:51Speaker 2: Statements from all of the people concerned, all identifying Jennifer
- 28:55Speaker 2: for her role in luring Shannon to what turned out
- 28:59Speaker 2: to be his death. Her on tape with her mother saying,
- 29:03Speaker 2: I set it up, and so on. From a legal perspective,
- 29:09Speaker 2: did that scream guilt to you as the statute of
- 29:13Speaker 2: the law applies in Florida?
- 29:15Speaker 18: My concern was, is her involvement was as nearly minimal
- 29:19Speaker 18: as you could possibly have to make the threshold for
- 29:23Speaker 18: a felony murder type case. And what it really came
- 29:27Speaker 18: down to was, did the jury believe that she knew
- 29:30Speaker 18: in advance that there was going to be a robbery
- 29:33Speaker 18: that was taking place? She didn't have to know there
- 29:34Speaker 18: was a homicide that was going to occur. But did
- 29:37Speaker 18: she know that there was going to be a robbery?
- 29:42Speaker 12: We're here today and this week because Jennifer Mee set
- 29:46Speaker 12: everything up. More correctly, she set up Shanon Griffin.
- 29:51Speaker 2: For a robbery.
- 29:53Speaker 12: I really have to look no further than her jail
- 29:55Speaker 12: phone call. and I relied on it during the prosecution,
- 30:00Speaker 12: that she set the whole thing up. Really, without her,
- 30:03Speaker 12: this does not happen.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Why are you in jail?
- 30:11Speaker 3: For murder in the first degree.
- 30:13Speaker 12: Who'd you kill?
- 30:15Speaker 3: I ain't killed nobody.
- 30:17Speaker 13: Well, then how are they charging you with murder?
- 30:20Speaker 3: Because I set everything up.
- 30:23Speaker 11: I'm sure for a jury, hearing her own words to
- 30:26Speaker 11: her own family that I set this up, that it
- 30:29Speaker 11: was a robbery, I'm sure that was incredibly compelling for them.
- 30:33Speaker 11: It's not a detective. It's not the police saying she
- 30:36Speaker 11: said this. It's her telling her mom.
- 30:39Speaker 17: ¶ ¶ ¶ ¶.
- 31:06Speaker 14: Thank you. Okay, would the defendant please rise? Madam Clerk,
- 31:10Speaker 14: you may publish the verdict.
- 31:14Speaker 2: We, the jury, find as follows the defendant in this case.
- 31:17Speaker 1: The defendant is guilty of murder in the first degree
- 31:20Speaker 1: as charged.
- 31:21Speaker 7: So say we all.
- 31:23Speaker 14: Um, the jury having found you guilty of murder in
- 31:26Speaker 14: the first degree, Miss Mee, I will adjudicate you guilty
- 31:29Speaker 14: and sentence you to life in prison without parole.
- 31:43Speaker 3: When she read that, I just.
- 31:48Speaker 16: The only thing I remember is turning around and looking
- 31:51Speaker 16: at my mom. I knew right then and there my.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Life was over.
- 32:13Speaker 2: And for me, that's one of the most troubling aspects
- 32:16Speaker 2: about this case. Jennifer will likely never be released from prison,
- 32:21Speaker 2: even though she didn't pull the trigger, she wasn't there
- 32:24Speaker 2: when it happened, and she didn't know that Shannon would
- 32:27Speaker 2: be killed.
- 32:29Speaker 17: MUSIC PLAYS.
- 32:35Speaker 2: I mean, short of hearing your daughter is dead herself,
- 32:39Speaker 2: to hear that she has gone to prison in her
- 32:43Speaker 2: early 20s for the rest of her natural life with
- 32:46Speaker 2: no possibility of ever having any chance of getting out,
- 32:52Speaker 2: it's like losing your child, isn't it, in a way?
- 32:54Speaker 2: I mean, of course you can talk to her.
- 32:56Speaker 15: I've said that multiple times. It's like I lost a child.
- 33:00Speaker 15: I died inside.
- 33:01Speaker 2: It was pretty rough. There was a lot of crying.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Did you assume, were you led to believe by the
- 33:09Speaker 2: lawyers that she was going to get off?
- 33:12Speaker 15: I believe that even her lawyer thought, you know, that
- 33:17Speaker 15: she would get some kind of lighter sentence than what
- 33:19Speaker 15: she did. I never once entertained that she would get
- 33:23Speaker 15: life without the possibility of parole. Never once I allowed
- 33:25Speaker 15: it to cross my mind. I thought 10 years at
- 33:28Speaker 15: the very most good time out in seven And, you know,
- 33:32Speaker 15: she'd be done with that.
- 33:40Speaker 8: John, I practice down here in South Florida. I've handled
- 33:43Speaker 8: cases like this. I'm still troubled by the plea bargains.
- 33:46Speaker 8: I'm bothered that she got a life sentence for this
- 33:48Speaker 8: the same way as if she had pulled the trigger.
- 33:50Speaker 8: And while legally that's the case, in terms of sentencing,
- 33:52Speaker 8: I think it's too harsh. So let's go back to
- 33:54Speaker 8: the plea. You offered 15. They said no. What about
- 33:57Speaker 8: 18 or 20, just to avoid a life sentence?
- 34:03Speaker 2: One of the big unanswered questions here is why there
- 34:06Speaker 2: was no plea bargain deal. to stop what has been
- 34:10Speaker 2: for her Armageddon of life without any possibility of parole.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Why was there no plea deal?
- 34:17Speaker 18: There were many attempts to try to facilitate one, but
- 34:21Speaker 18: in the end, the state took a position, don't even
- 34:24Speaker 18: come to us with anything less than starting at 25 years.
- 34:29Speaker 10: You're a very experienced lawyer. You can see the way
- 34:32Speaker 10: the prosecution are taking this. They're playing hardball. If she's
- 34:37Speaker 10: convicted under.
- 34:39Speaker 2: the pretext that they're charging her with, she's never coming
- 34:42Speaker 2: out of prison. Is it not then your duty to
- 34:46Speaker 2: say to her, this is likely to happen, you need
- 34:49Speaker 2: to take this deal, even if it's 25 years, even
- 34:52Speaker 2: if it's 30 years?
- 34:54Speaker 18: I don't think it's our obligation to say, you need
- 34:57Speaker 18: to take this deal. I think what we need and
- 34:59Speaker 18: what we did do is say, this is what the
- 35:01Speaker 18: evidence is against you. This is what they're going to argue.
- 35:05Speaker 18: there is a substantial possibility of a conviction in this case,
- 35:09Speaker 18: which means you'll get life. It just simply, that didn't
- 35:12Speaker 18: come up in that fashion. She was adamant she wanted
- 35:15Speaker 18: to move forward. She was willing to run the risk.
- 35:17Speaker 18: It wasn't just myself. All the attorneys involved in this
- 35:21Speaker 18: talk with her about that, even during the course of
- 35:23Speaker 18: the trial.
- 35:23Speaker 2: There's a theory by those who want to criticize you that,
- 35:27Speaker 2: you know, you're a kind of celebrity case ambulance chaser
- 35:32Speaker 2: that grabbed a hot case.
- 35:34Speaker 11: Right.
- 35:35Speaker 2: And then took a big punt on your gut feeling
- 35:38Speaker 2: that a jury would buy into poor hiccup girl inadvertently
- 35:44Speaker 2: caught up in murder and would fine for her, which
- 35:46Speaker 2: is why you didn't push harder for a deal. That's
- 35:49Speaker 2: what people who don't like you say.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 35:53Speaker 18: And I've heard them say that. And that's fine, but
- 35:57Speaker 18: that's not what happened in this case. What happened in
- 35:59Speaker 18: this case is She understood, Jennifer clearly understood that there
- 36:03Speaker 18: were options.
- 36:10Speaker 10: If she hadn't been the hiccup girl, she'd just been
- 36:13Speaker 10: any other girl who got caught up in this exact murder.
- 36:16Speaker 10: Let's play hypotheticals here.
- 36:19Speaker 2: What do you think the state may have done in
- 36:22Speaker 2: terms of a deal on the years she would serve
- 36:25Speaker 2: in prison?
- 36:27Speaker 18: I would say I would have gotten her 10 years
- 36:30Speaker 18: or less.
- 36:32Speaker 19: Wow.
- 36:57Speaker 11: Shanon Griffin, he's doing exactly what every 20, 21, 22-year-old.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Male's supposed to do.
- 37:05Speaker 11: Work, go meet girls. And he wound up dead.
- 37:13Speaker 12: Sharon Fermi's fame as the hiccup girl affected the public
- 37:16Speaker 12: perception and the fact that people were just more shocked
- 37:18Speaker 12: that she could be involved in a crime like this,
- 37:21Speaker 12: where someone ultimately dies.
- 37:26Speaker 19: I personally think some people probably deserve the death penalty.
- 37:30Speaker 19: In this case, they don't. They need to live that
- 37:33Speaker 19: life out and think about what they've done every day.
- 37:35Speaker 19: And to me, that's more of a punishment, if they
- 37:39Speaker 19: have a conscience.
- 37:46Speaker 2: You've never been here before, have you?
- 37:48Speaker 15: I have never been.
- 37:50Speaker 2: How do you feel being at the crime scene?
- 37:56Speaker 15: Very nervous inside, knowing that this is where everything happened.
- 38:01Speaker 14: Sad.
- 38:02Speaker 15: Knowing that somebody's life was taken, so many lives were changed.
- 38:07Speaker 15: Kind of makes it seem like it's just happened coming
- 38:09Speaker 15: back here.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Why do you want to see this?
- 38:17Speaker 3: I don't know why.
- 38:19Speaker 9: I just felt compelled to come.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Back this way.
- 38:27Speaker 2: This is where Jennifer led Shannon. into this corner. This
- 38:32Speaker 2: is where the other two men were waiting. This is
- 38:38Speaker 2: where Jennifer then walked away.
- 38:40Speaker 15: I do remember this in the crime scene, so he
- 38:43Speaker 15: must have been found, right?
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Jennifer left. She walked off down there and left.
- 38:48Speaker 2: And this is where Shannon was shot dead and where
- 38:51Speaker 2: his body was later found.
- 38:53Speaker 9: I don't understand why.
- 39:01Speaker 2: How do you feel standing here? Very sad.
- 39:07Speaker 9: Shanan shouldn't have died. Those things should never have happened.
- 39:13Speaker 9: Young man, 22 years old, never got to enjoy life.
- 39:18Speaker 9: I wish I could do something to change everything that night.
- 39:24Speaker 3: And I know I can't.
- 39:25Speaker 17: I'm sorry for you. you.
- 39:33Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 39:53Speaker 1: At first, I was, you know, I was like, well,
- 39:57Speaker 1: that was just a fire. They deserved what they got.
- 40:00Speaker 1: But then as the years passed, I think, like Coach.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Leggett, that's four kids.
- 40:05Speaker 1: That's just life. It's just gone. I mean, you got
- 40:08Speaker 1: to have some kind of compassion for them just as
- 40:11Speaker 1: well as Shanon. Not only did they take Shanon's life,
- 40:14Speaker 1: they also took theirs, too.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Do you feel you deserve to be called a murderer?
- 40:25Speaker 10: I know you've been found guilty of first-degree murder, but
- 40:28Speaker 10: there will be people watching who, even though they hate
- 40:30Speaker 10: what you did, they will think, well, you weren't there.
- 40:34Speaker 10: You didn't know he was going to be shot dead.
- 40:38Speaker 10: You weren't directly involved in this murder. Why are you
- 40:43Speaker 10: here for the rest of your life for murder? Do
- 40:45Speaker 10: you feel that a bit?
- 40:48Speaker 5: I don't feel like I should be called a murderer, no. Now,
- 40:51Speaker 5: do I feel like I should have gotten time in prison?
- 40:55Speaker 13: Yes.
- 40:56Speaker 3: The amount of time?
- 40:57Speaker 1: No.
- 40:58Speaker 5: But then when you actually sit and let it wander
- 41:01Speaker 5: through your mind, sometimes I do because he's never going
- 41:06Speaker 5: to be able to see his life. So without him
- 41:09Speaker 5: seeing his life, how I feel, even though I wasn't
- 41:15Speaker 5: the one who actually pulled the trigger, but because of
- 41:18Speaker 5: my co-defendants, I'm just.
- 41:21Speaker 3: As guilty as they are.
- 41:23Speaker 2: So you've come to terms with that?
- 41:24Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 41:25Speaker 5: But then also in my mind, you know, there are
- 41:29Speaker 5: people that have hearts.
- 41:31Speaker 3: There are people that will see. Give her a second chance.
- 41:37Speaker 5: Let her be able to, you know, show the world
- 41:41Speaker 5: she's not this cold-hearted killer, murderer, whatever people make me
- 41:45Speaker 5: out to be.
- 41:46Speaker 10: What are the things that you're saddest about being in
- 41:49Speaker 10: here for the rest of your life in terms of
- 41:51Speaker 10: what you will now not be.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Able to enjoy?
- 41:53Speaker 16: The saddest thing as of now is, like, I just.
- 42:01Speaker 3: I just found out that, um, my sister.
- 42:03Speaker 5: Well, my sister just had a baby and I'll never
- 42:06Speaker 5: see her to grow up.
- 42:15Speaker 14: For.
- 42:16Speaker 10: a robbery of $ 60.
- 42:27Speaker 2: When you finally met Shannon for the first time that night,
- 42:30Speaker 2: because you'd never seen him before, what was your impression
- 42:33Speaker 2: of him?
- 42:35Speaker 3: He was very handsome.
- 42:37Speaker 5: I don't really remember what he was wearing or nothing
- 42:42Speaker 5: like that, but I do remember he was a strong,
- 42:46Speaker 5: built man.
- 42:47Speaker 3: That's all I remember. And I remember he had such
- 42:50Speaker 3: flawless features.
- 42:52Speaker 10: Did any part of you in that moment when you
- 42:55Speaker 10: physically saw him have any doubt or regret about what
- 42:59Speaker 10: was about to happen to him?
- 43:00Speaker 5: Yeah. When I knew I was turning away, that's when
- 43:06Speaker 5: it really dropped in because I was just like, what
- 43:09Speaker 5: did I.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Just leave him to? Did I leave him to, to, um,
- 43:15Speaker 3: What's a good word to use? To the wolves, basically.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Could I have told him, no, don't go back there,
- 43:26Speaker 5: and allowed him to get back on his motorcycle to leave?
- 43:36Speaker 3: I wish that I could have just stopped it right
- 43:38Speaker 3: then and there.
