- 0:00The quality of rajas, when it predominates in the action of
- 0:04the individual seeking spiritual growth, can have quite
- 0:08disruptive effects. A certain amount of focus and
- 0:12energy is required for any spiritually endeavour, to be
- 0:16sure, but there is a fine line between too little energy and
- 0:21too much. Rajas is the guna that prods the
- 0:25vital nature and can raise up desire as a motive force.
- 0:29Desire in the sada can take the form of an attempt to attain
- 0:33spiritual experiences or realizations with an emphasis on
- 0:38doing it quickly and successfully from the standpoint
- 0:42of the ego personality. If we examine how Rajas works,
- 0:47it first lures the seeker into establishing a particular desire
- 0:51as the purpose or result to be attained.
- 0:54It tends to act with abandoned, without planning, without due
- 0:59consideration for the right manner, right time, right place
- 1:04and right circumstance. Which considerations are the
- 1:08province of the Suttwick quality.
- 1:11This can lead to considerable waste of energy, increase of
- 1:15friction, development of unintended consequences or an
- 1:20energetic atmosphere that is chaotic, pressured were overly
- 1:24demanding. In fact, just the opposite of
- 1:27what is needed by the spiritual force as it seeks for aspiration
- 1:33and receptivity as the basis it needs to accomplish its purpose.
- 1:39On the other side, when Rajas fails to achieve its desires, it
- 1:44tends to fall back into a state of Thomas, characterized by
- 1:48torpor, despondency, depression and fatigue.
- 1:53This oscillation between rajas and Thomas is well known and
- 1:57characteristic. Even if the rajasic effort bears
- 2:02some fruit, it tends to have some serious potential negative
- 2:06effects due to the energy that was deployed and the manner in
- 2:10which it was deployed. There are seekers who attempt to
- 2:14storm the gates of heaven. They may actually call forth
- 2:18various forces, but at the risk of ill health, disharmony,
- 2:24mental disturbances, or even death.
- 2:28They frequently discover that calling forth the power into the
- 2:31limited ego personality can be A2 edged sword.
- 2:35On the one side, they acquire, at least temporarily, a new
- 2:39power, a new great experience, a new energetic level.
- 2:45On the other side, the human frame is not capable of holding
- 2:48and managing that energy and may breakdown or spill the energy.
- 2:55Goethe explored the issue of calling forth powerful forces
- 2:59without the requisite readiness in Faust.
- 3:02Doctor Faust uses various spells and formulae to bring forth a
- 3:06great vital power. When the being embodying that
- 3:10power actually appears, Faust is distressed to learn that he
- 3:14cannot control that power, that it far exceeds the scope of his
- 3:19human personality, and he quakes with fear.
- 3:23He later accepts the guidance and leadership of
- 3:26Mephistopheles, who opens the path to the fulfillment of his
- 3:30desires, including his sexual exploitation of a young maiden,
- 3:36his seeking for power and influence as he also undertook
- 3:40to expand his knowledge and powers of action in the world.
- 3:44Faust struggled with the forces he called forth through his
- 3:48rajasic desire filled energy and only at the end, through the
- 3:53strength of his soul was he able to be redeemed.
- 3:56At the point of his death, many people, lured by the desire for
- 4:02great new power, practice extremes of pranayam or other
- 4:06methods and are thereby able to experience the influx of great
- 4:11force. There are numerous cases of
- 4:13hidden, unfulfilled desires rising up from the depths of the
- 4:17subconscious when these forces come and shake the being to its
- 4:21core. One of the characteristics of
- 4:24rajas is the push to gain power, wealth or sexual dominance.
- 4:31There are instances of mental or emotional imbalance, vital
- 4:35disruptions and even physical imbalances and disturbances.
- 4:41One of the reasons it is considered to be essential to
- 4:44have an experienced guide or guru when 1 undertakes practices
- 4:48of this sort is to help the seeker find and maintain a
- 4:52suitable balance to integrate the new force and energy
- 4:56effectively without this type of potentially harmful effects
- 5:01ruining the individual's life and spiritual practice.
- 5:06There are cases where people suddenly start hearing voices
- 5:09that they believe are divine. As they begin to carry out the
- 5:13guidance or direction provided by these voices, they may soon
- 5:18find out that they were listening to deceptive beings
- 5:22who are controlling them and feeding off their energy.
- 5:27There are other cases where individuals find their nervous
- 5:30being shaken and disrupted and they develop tremors or other
- 5:34characteristics that speak to the inability to hold the energy
- 5:38they are receiving. In other cases, there can be
- 5:42mental or emotional breakdowns, mood swings, schizophrenic
- 5:47episodes, emergence of multiple personalities, development of
- 5:51feelings of dominance or greatness that mislead the
- 5:55seeker into arrogating to his personal being.
- 5:58A sense of some kind of destiny, of pre eminence or leadership,
- 6:03or other manifestations of some kind of lack of integration in
- 6:06the being and the corresponding lack of balance.
- 6:11In some instances, lower impulses, including bullying,
- 6:16sexual exploitation, exercising domination over others, anger
- 6:23can come to the fore, particularly if the sodic has
- 6:26left certain impulses unfulfilled or suppressed prior
- 6:31to beginning the practice, Sri Aurobindo writes.
- 6:35Quote. Desire often leads either to
- 6:39excessive effort, meaning often much labor and a limited fruit,
- 6:44with strain, exhaustion, and in case of difficulty or failure,
- 6:50despondence, disbelief, or revolt, or else it leads to
- 6:55pulling down the force. That can be done.
- 6:59But except for the yogically strong and experienced, it is
- 7:03not always safe, though it may be often very effective.
- 7:07Not safe first because it may lead to violent reactions, or it
- 7:12brings down contrary or wrong or mixed forces which the sodic is
- 7:17not experienced enough to distinguish from the true ones.
- 7:21Or else it may substitute the Sodic's own limited power of
- 7:25experience, or his mental and vital constructions for the free
- 7:29gift and true leading of the Divine.
