Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Why Not Today podcast where we share and celebrate courage, determination,
- 0:07the power of saying why not today.
- 0:09I'm your host, Leslie Cain, and in each episode we dive into inspiring stories of individuals
- 0:14who have taken bold steps, faced their fears, and embraced the possibilities of today.
- 0:19From entrepreneurs to artists, dreamers to doers, we explore the moments when they said
- 0:23enough waiting, why not today?
- 0:26When it says we uncover the heartwarming, the audacious, and the transformative, whether
- 0:30it's pursuing a lifelong passion, overcoming obstacles, or simply choosing joy, our guests
- 0:35share their journeys and inspire us all.
- 0:37I started this podcast in honor of my father, Patrick Cain, who often said why not today.
- 0:42And it's funny that Why Not Today came from somebody my dad knew that shared something
- 0:49that he woke up one morning and he actually had to have some surgery.
- 0:55And he was wearing an eye patch, which the logo for Why Not Today is my dad.
- 0:58He had an eye patch on hand of our mustache.
- 1:00So this gentleman posted on Face Social Media how he met my dad.
- 1:05Or, no, he thought of my dad and he talked about all the things my dad did.
- 1:09And then he said, and we both said why not today?
- 1:11And that's where the name came from.
- 1:12And the reason I'm going this long story around, well, I met this man's wife the other last
- 1:17night and she's like, oh, you know, my husband, I know your parents.
- 1:20And then I'm like, this is my, where my podcast came from.
- 1:24Your husband, she's like, oh my gosh, I had no idea.
- 1:27So long story.
- 1:28But yeah, so Why Not Today is a movement to inspire people to live their dreams, pursue
- 1:34their dreams and just live their life.
- 1:36We are not promised tomorrow.
- 1:37We need to enjoy it.
- 1:39And so I'm excited about my guest, Kylie Doll, who I met via a Facebook group.
- 1:45And so if you're not playing on Facebook and you're not connecting and making friends,
- 1:48you're missing out.
- 1:50And we connected, she has a podcast that I was on a couple of weeks ago and I'm excited
- 1:54to have you here, Kylie.
- 1:55And I really don't know your backstory.
- 1:57So it's fun.
- 1:58People try to send me their bios ahead of time.
- 2:00I'm like, I don't want to know.
- 2:01I want to be able to uncover it together.
- 2:02So Kylie, welcome to the Why Not Today podcast.
- 2:05Share a little bit about you and your, or in your fun fact, and then we'll get started.
- 2:12So awesome.
- 2:13First of all, Leslie, thank you so much.
- 2:14I really appreciate the time that we get to spend together.
- 2:18So and I love helping podcasts out.
- 2:22As you said, I have a podcast.
- 2:23So that's how we're going to be able to learn and grow.
- 2:25So thank you.
- 2:26Absolutely.
- 2:27Thank you.
- 2:28About me, it's very, it's not simple, but I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 2:33I am a military brat.
- 2:36And I had a grew up in a very chaotic, large family, middle child.
- 2:42A lot of my siblings did not do well with the military life, but I did.
- 2:47And I know with military kids and siblings, it's either you either do really well or you
- 2:54don't, but I loved it, man.
- 2:56New school knew me like new hair knew me, you know, so I got to reinvent myself each
- 3:01and every single time.
- 3:03So that was great.
- 3:04My parents were kind of funny.
- 3:06They adopted anybody and everybody off the street that needed a place to go.
- 3:11And I had cousin brothers, literally my some crazy aunts would just drop their kids off.
- 3:16And I don't think some of them ever pick them back up again.
- 3:20So I think that's that chaotic energy a little bit where my father was an entrepreneur, self
- 3:28made after the military barely got a GED, but my parents were always working on stuff,
- 3:35working on projects, cleaning businesses.
- 3:37I mean, just you, you go and they encouraged the entrepreneurship in me.
- 3:42So I've got really lucky with that.
- 3:44I often ask people that are entrepreneurs or going looking to start a business, are
- 3:48your, what did your parents do?
- 3:50And often people whose parents were entrepreneurs, they follow the same footsteps because that
- 3:55was the model.
- 3:56Yeah.
- 3:57It's well, and like I said, my dad did retire from the military and then he just went into
- 4:02be a self, a self-taught home builder and actually did really well for himself.
- 4:07That's awesome.
- 4:08Yeah.
- 4:09So what's a fun fact about Kylie?
- 4:10We want to know.
- 4:11Fun fact about me, I got two of them, but they're kind of fun and easy.
- 4:16I met my husband, Dan, on an airplane back in about 2015.
- 4:22Literally, we sat next to each other.
- 4:26I was coming back and forth to, to what from South Africa at that time.
- 4:30And we had about a four hour flight from Tucson onto Atlanta with the best conversation.
- 4:38And he says, well, how can I stay in touch?
- 4:41And I'm like, well, hello, if you want to stay in touch with me, you have to be able
- 4:44to WhatsApp.
- 4:45So he says, well, what's WhatsApp?
- 4:47And so I showed him and then he got to his gate and he, what's that?
- 4:50And he goes, hi, I downloaded WhatsApp.
- 4:53And so, you know, the story is history.
- 4:56We started dating and then got married and that's what brought me to Virginia.
- 5:01And another quick fun fact is I have been very fortunate to do my 50 miler.
- 5:09So I'm very proud of that.
- 5:10I do run and I'm very active.
- 5:12And so I did my 50 mile race in Arizona.
- 5:17You do it all in one day.
- 5:20And it's about a 16 hour process, if you will.
- 5:23And that was back in about 2016.
- 5:25Wow.
- 5:26I'm impressed.
- 5:27Not me.
- 5:28Not my bucket list at all.
- 5:32So what does courage mean to you, Kylie?
- 5:36I like that question and I'm glad that I got to think about it before, but courage to me
- 5:41means to never give up.
- 5:44Never ever give up on your dream.
- 5:46And I love the fact and I can twist in the why not today because that is part of it.
- 5:51A lot of people get stuck in not accomplishing really what they want to their dreams because
- 5:57they're afraid.
- 5:58So I love that idea of why not today and then give that that can give you courage.
- 6:04So the courage is not to give up and to start now.
- 6:08Love it.
- 6:09Not wait.
- 6:10People I think over analyze over.
- 6:13Yeah, over thinking.
- 6:15And it's just one baby step at a time and I always say where we start where finish are
- 6:19going to be completely different, but just got to start or you're never going to get
- 6:22there.
- 6:23So as baby steps.
- 6:24Yeah, I was talking to some of the other day about businesses and doing things and it's
- 6:28like I have another business that I've been part of for 30 years and you know, how did
- 6:36I get to 30 years one day at a time?
- 6:39One one one courage step at a time and you know, and you wake up one day and like, how
- 6:44am I here?
- 6:45Like, how did that?
- 6:47But yes.
- 6:48So Kylie, let's talk about have you had let's talk about your courage journey and first
- 6:52I always start with, are there any times in your life as part of your journey or story
- 6:57that I call my why not today moments that you woke up in the middle of the night you
- 7:03were talking to someone you remember exactly where you were what you were doing that you
- 7:08made that decision on the spot and it totally checked change trajectory of your life.
- 7:13Oh yeah.
- 7:14Oh yeah.
- 7:15Absolutely.
- 7:16I can tell you it's 2010.
- 7:18And I in so some of you might know that I had a safari business and I still do safaris
- 7:24but I don't go safaris.
- 7:26Okay.
- 7:27So actual in South Africa real live safaris.
- 7:31Oh wow.
- 7:32That's like, yeah, 100%.
- 7:34I did it since 2004.
- 7:38And now I still do.
- 7:40I lead safaris amazing.
- 7:43But then I got out of Arizona summers and I would go and spend Arizona summers in South
- 7:48Africa which was the winter time.
- 7:51So during the time that we have that.
- 7:53Oh, that's another story.
- 7:54Hold on.
- 7:55I'll tell you that.
- 7:56All right.
- 7:57That's really cool.
- 7:58But during the time that we had a gap like where there was a long weekend and or we had
- 8:04three or four days without clients because safaris are like one like a like a cruise ship
- 8:10in the bushbelt.
- 8:12Right.
- 8:13And they stay seven days or 10 days and then they go.
- 8:17So my best girlfriends at the time and my creative director still today was out there
- 8:25and we were having a long weekend.
- 8:27Right.
- 8:28She came in from Jomsberg.
- 8:30And so we were chatting and talking and now my father again was a self-made home builder.
- 8:37So I grew up with subcontractors my whole life and they were basically like uncles.
- 8:43And and and it really kind of like heart crushed me when the sense of like they could they
- 8:48were great at home building at you know painting construction drywall this or that.
- 8:55But they all suffered which is how do I run my business like they would say constantly
- 9:00you know I've got I've got invoices that I'm still two months of giving delivering because
- 9:05I'm so busy.
- 9:06Right.
- 9:07So I said I'm going to solve this problem.
- 9:10I'm going to build a platform that helps them automate their businesses and and and figures
- 9:16out a way to start a business.
- 9:18And that was my aha moment with business in a box and my girlfriend again Nadine my creative
- 9:25director still today we birthed business in a box over a weekend.
- 9:31Love it.
- 9:32And that is such a big need.
- 9:34And you know people are like oh you just started a business and I found and yeah I just started
- 9:40a business and it's easy to get LLC and it doesn't take any time.
- 9:44But because I had a direct selling business for years that I had a corporation behind
- 9:48me doing everything started my own business it's like how do you find out all the things
- 9:52you're supposed to know.
- 9:53And I keep saying I didn't know what I didn't know.
- 9:56Right.
- 9:57And there's a lot that goes into this and to have a checklist or to have somebody guiding
- 10:03you and also systems like that's one thing I teach a lot about and have a course about
- 10:07systems and putting and I was talking to another friend of mine and I think one of both of
- 10:12our strengths is you have those systems in your business that if you do something more
- 10:17than once I would say it should be a system like it should just you shouldn't spend time
- 10:24recreating the wheel over and over and over and over.
- 10:26Right.
- 10:27So creating that system and you know somebody else has done it for you by all means copy
- 10:33it.
- 10:34Right.
- 10:35And borrow but exactly exactly you don't make it don't make it complicated borrow it and
- 10:40use it.
- 10:41Somebody also I heard one time said copy you can copy but make sure you're copying the
- 10:45right cat not somebody that's not successful.
- 10:49So what exactly is business in a box and thanks for asking how do you mark that and how do
- 10:55you help people.
- 10:57Yeah it's so back in 2010 now this is kind of funny think about this 2010 automations
- 11:03were like huh what and then chat GPT and the internet.
- 11:06I mean well of course when I started my Mary Kay business in 94 I always say we didn't have
- 11:11Internet and we didn't have cell phones like that was like a long you know like what.
- 11:17Yeah I spent commercial real estate I spent 25 years in commercial real estate exactly
- 11:22at that right time and it's like we're talking glossy fax days you know big cell phones that
- 11:28took a brick to carry around and now we're dating ourselves by the way Leslie I'm just
- 11:32saying.
- 11:33Yeah I know.
- 11:34We started in New York too.
- 11:36That's true that's true we were youngsters.
- 11:39Business in the box it's very simple my passion is to help people start their business and
- 11:45stay out of a minimum wage nightmare it's very simple and a lot of people get stuck
- 11:51in the well I've got to have all of this in place before I actually start my business
- 11:57and I base this on mostly service based businesses because I like to be able to help people that
- 12:06never thought they could actually start a business and I'm not going to help you get
- 12:11a PhD I'm not going to help you you know start a trucking company right now I can't help
- 12:19you with that but my goal is to start a service based business that is cost effective that
- 12:28gives you all the systems all the coaching everything that you need all of your branding
- 12:33materials your package your website your all of your social pages your cover pages I have
- 12:40an amazing CRM that goes along with it that has texting and email capability to make it
- 12:46easy for you but also to build funnels so that you can go if you're a cleaning business
- 12:53for example or your consultants you know we help you with like a quiz whatever that lead
- 13:00magnet is I offer weekly coaching which is part of it you can't have one without actually
- 13:05having direction and understanding where okay now Kylie you gave me this I did the work
- 13:12here is the results where do we tweak it so we literally work on your business every Tuesday
- 13:18at four o'clock which is a weekly coaching call it's our workshop that's where all the
- 13:23work gets done that's awesome and I think where that's so powerful is that accountability
- 13:29that you know when I started my why not today business is I talked about a year and a half
- 13:35doing an LLC and I'm more deadline driven than anything so literally January 1st I'm like okay
- 13:40before the end of this day I'm doing it but to have that accountability because it just
- 13:44can slide because you're so busy busy whether you're working in the business and not on the
- 13:50business which is such a big difference or a lot of people start these businesses as a
- 13:56side hustle to build to a full-time business but you're so busy you don't have time to do
- 14:03the things so to have that deadline that accountability updating my website and you know I want to
- 14:09spend time you know working on it so it's effective and I find during the week when I'm so busy I
- 14:14don't have time so they usually give me something during the week and on weekends I spend out a
- 14:19couple hours trying to you know reviewing it but I have that deadline and that makes such
- 14:24difference so what kind of industries do you focus on Kylie I know you said service but if you're
- 14:29all service-based businesses at this year in January I had a really good aha moment and
- 14:36some people well there you go why not today moment I've been with I've done a lot of ministry work
- 14:44with Kyros prison ministry so it's the women's prison ministry and we get to go into the prisons
- 14:50and our whole purpose there is just encouragement that's just it we do encouragement we bake
- 14:55cookies we talk with them and that's it and it's it's it's just amazing but I I sat there and I
- 15:02thought wait a second if anybody needs business in a box I learned about the reentry team the
- 15:10reentry community and it's people that are about 90 days from getting out right they've been
- 15:19incarcerated it's typically you know we're not sorry we're not talking people that are going to
- 15:25be forever in because of whatever they've done I never ask anything like that but it's they're
- 15:3190 days and they're going to get out and what do they do when they get out they go look for a job
- 15:37and they can't get a job because they have a record and so at that moment I said all right
- 15:43why not today and I built a department of corrections side of business in a box and I've
- 15:52spent all this year with the flagship program inside of the women's prison here in my area
- 15:59and I have done unbelievable amount of work trying to get inside of the prisons so now your question
- 16:08is I have a department of correction side of business in a box but everything is service based
- 16:14so a really good thing of any kind of construction business whether you're a handyman a painter a
- 16:21landscaper you know you hang sheetrock you do floors whatever it might be also any kind of
- 16:29cleaning business which also can be construction auto detailing homes offices commercial any of that
- 16:37and um companion care is a really big one coaching can still be part of it I know you you never
- 16:44been to be think out of my flagship prop program four of the ladies identified that they would
- 16:51like to start a companion care and I'm not talking to cna I'm talking about listen you're
- 16:56gonna go I need somebody to go and sit with my grandma cook her a meal maybe you're gonna go
- 17:02pull some weeds for her do a little bit of folding of the laundry and you're gonna sit there for four
- 17:08hours and you're gonna she needs companion care I know somebody who needs that right now who's got
- 17:13dementia lives on her own and the doctor just says she shouldn't be driving and she is climbing the
- 17:18walls because she's so bored yep yep you should be in a home soon but yeah but there's like there's
- 17:25a gap there so that is that is a really good one and the other one that dawned on me believe it or
- 17:30not Leslie is um and I will push for lists like in my 2025 this is part of my goals is to have
- 17:38bi be coaches and what better coach for the department of corrections especially than somebody
- 17:45that's already been through the program and have been incarcerated and understand what these people
- 17:52need yeah um that is such an amazing ministry and I do I mentioned the other day of somebody I need
- 17:57to connect you with but have you also thought about working and this could be a whole nother
- 18:01thing to work in the recovery of abuse or like addiction well I've got a couple of domestic
- 18:09violence but also addiction um that there's an organization called Christopher Atwood Foundation
- 18:18okay I don't know if you've ever heard of him but um his family started this nonprofit there um the
- 18:24woman that's in charge her brother died of an overdose but at 20 or in when he was in high school
- 18:32he was addicted in reston virginia which is a pretty affluent area he was addicted to heroin
- 18:37and went out of rehab and finally passed away but they were never educated on like
- 18:44Narcamin things that could save people and so they're a nonprofit like days after he passed away
- 18:50but their whole program is they educate people and a lot of the people in their program that are
- 18:55their educators and their coaches and their counselors are recovering addicts and so no no
- 19:02that's a good idea be in a nice partnership because you know people need just that hope that
- 19:08it's overwhelming like all the things of opening a business that I love what you're doing and
- 19:16I'm sure there's areas that you can get public funding to help with that yeah it is and and
- 19:22speaking of that it's like we we just talked a little bit about how much time you spend on things
- 19:26right and that is like cobwebs of time and you can go down rabbit holes and grants and
- 19:33it's really really difficult it's um I started my nonprofit which is kind of interesting in when
- 19:40during my why not today a ha moment starting in january of 2024 and I'm like oh okay well I'm just
- 19:47going to start a nonprofit to help these people so I did a lot of work I did it's it's called wings
- 19:53of growth and again you've got to fundraise fundraise fundraise and grants and everything it's just
- 20:00really really hard for you to do everything on your own and that's why even through through that you
- 20:08know I I there's there's coaching programs out there to actually have a successful nonprofit
- 20:14right I'm very big believer on find a coach find a mentor find a program which is going to help
- 20:20fast track you and actually honestly save you time and money period as I said find the right cat
- 20:26and copy him and learn that mentorship yeah that's awesome yeah one of the courses I've
- 20:32thought about doing is how to do a podcast because yeah that's you but I had to figure it out of my
- 20:36own it took a lot of work and a lot of time it does it does yeah so um yeah I love the nonprofit
- 20:44wing wings of growth and one of the things with why not today merchandise is I want to be partnering
- 20:50with nonprofits that to give people the courage to say why not today which aligns with everything
- 20:55everybody's doing but to have a partnership with anybody that buys why not today swag merchandise
- 21:01whether it's a shirt or a mug that a percentage is going to go back to these nonprofits to help
- 21:05support them because I think the why not today message resonates very very much with the nonprofit
- 21:12world what people are doing they need courage to do all the things and help the people I agree
- 21:17I agree and it gives them that support so that's awesome Leslie yeah I love your business in a box
- 21:22idea so any other why not today moments or courage that you want to share before yeah before we wrap
- 21:29it up I'll just be quick on you this is because it actually was it's um you asked about Africa
- 21:35and um I was I'm gonna say the early oh my goodness 89 uh probably early perhaps I was deep in commercial
- 21:45real estate I was getting ready to show a property in Tucson nearest to our Sonoran Desert Museum
- 21:54and the guy said you came um highly recommended because he knew that my family were big into the
- 22:01outdoors and so here it is this is glossy fax days I um sent him the package of the listings and my
- 22:09you know photo shopped card and all that stuff my glamour card and um he uh gets it like a few days
- 22:18whatever caught princess you know you might think I'm nuts but I'm he now this guy was a um safari
- 22:25guide so he had a a booking business and stuff he goes Kylie I um am getting ready to go to
- 22:31Africa in about six weeks the person that was going to help be a gopher for me can't go would you
- 22:37want to go and I'm like go to Africa he goes I can't afford to pay you but I'll pay your way
- 22:43and it is a month though now this was east Africa and I'm like I didn't even care I'm like yes yes
- 22:51and I told my group my entire office like I just got on board and they're like oh my god you don't
- 22:57even know this guy well I'm a practical person it's like he had five or six doctors on safari and we
- 23:03were getting to do some community work in the hospitals in the schools in the prisons and I'm
- 23:08like listen I could be the train wreck that smashes his safari so I'm the one that's like I'm easy this
- 23:13is great I went spent a month and I was like the safari princess I'm like Lord thank you very much
- 23:19I sent a postcard back to my dad with a push pilot I said dad I'm not coming home I'm gonna stay here
- 23:24and raise monkeys and that was my that was my love I loved I I knew amazing story God put Africa in my
- 23:32heart and my dad and I got to go back and forth to Africa several times because he was a big
- 23:39outdoorsman and I said I'm gonna start a safari business I'm gonna start something that's really
- 23:44great and I got to do some really great after school programs and I instilled very much giving back
- 23:52into every single client that came in that's such a cool story and you know when we have to be open
- 23:58I did it a podcast episode a couple months ago called the why not today scavenger hunt like you
- 24:03never know who that person's gonna be that's gonna take you to that place you need to be and we need
- 24:09to be open and aware and be willing to say yes I'm gonna do that you know and not overthink it and
- 24:15not over analyze it because you just never know there was a devotion I read one time and this woman
- 24:20talked about they went somewhere and did something and at a conference and her daughter they had
- 24:25elephant there and her daughter got to ride an elephant and so the whole premise is and it aligns
- 24:30with your safari but you never know when you wake up in the morning where at the end of the day you
- 24:34can ride an elephant so you never know when you get up you have the perfect plan for your week your
- 24:38day your hour and it blows up and but something else comes around so love that so how would you
- 24:44encourage some good attitude if you keep a good attitude you're gonna make that a lot easier on
- 24:48yourself absolutely we have a choice um so how would you encourage somebody else to start a business
