- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Tuesday, it is the 5th of
- 0:18March and I'm glad to have your company.
- 0:21How are you doing? Yeah well that's great.
- 0:26Well that's terrible and I'm so sorry.
- 0:27Or wherever you are in between those two extremes.
- 0:30OHP, today is a good day today. Today we finished the book of
- 0:35Ephesians and the last chapter, Chapter 6.
- 0:38It is as my boys would say, it's a banger.
- 0:40It is full of fantastic stuff. We're going to get to cover the
- 0:45whole armour of God. We're going to have a a
- 0:47quintessential Paul greeting at the end of his book, filled with
- 0:51sentimentality. And it's going to start off
- 0:54finishing what it began yesterday with some practical
- 0:56advice to households. So this is just a chapter so
- 1:01full of such good stuff. And what I love about reading in
- 1:07the New Living Translation is so often.
- 1:09I don't know about you, friend, but I have been reading the NIV
- 1:12my whole life, and these and and also the Super literal New
- 1:17Revised Standard Edition, etcetera.
- 1:20But reading it in the New Living Translation, it just it breathes
- 1:25life into these texts in a way that catches me off guard.
- 1:29And these verses that I've heard so many times, and I love
- 1:34reading it in the New Living Translation just just somehow
- 1:38opens it up for me in a way that that is fresh and surprises me
- 1:42often. So I always look forward to
- 1:44reading some of my favourite passages in this translation.
- 1:48So do you want to do it with me? You do.
- 1:50Oh, I'm so glad. Otherwise this would have been a
- 1:52bit awkward. Yes, let us read it together.
- 1:56Ephesians chapter 6. Children, obey your parents
- 2:11because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to
- 2:15do. Honour your father and mother.
- 2:18This is the first commandment with a promise.
- 2:21If you honour your father and mother, things will go well for
- 2:25you and you will have a long life on the earth.
- 2:29Fathers, to not provoke your children to anger by the way you
- 2:33treat them, Rather bring them up with the discipline and
- 2:38instruction that comes from the Lord.
- 2:41Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and
- 2:46fear. Serve them sincerely as you
- 2:49would serve Christ. Try to please them all the time,
- 2:53not just when they're watching you as slaves of Christ.
- 2:56Do the will of God with all your heart work with enthusiasm as
- 3:02though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
- 3:06Remember that the Lord will reward each one of us for the
- 3:09good we do, whether we are slaves or free masters.
- 3:15Treat your slaves in the same way, don't threaten them.
- 3:18Remember, you both have the same master in heaven and he has no
- 3:24favourites. A final word, be strong in the
- 3:30Lord and in His mighty power. Put on all of God's armour so
- 3:35that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of
- 3:39the devil. For we are not fighting against
- 3:42flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and
- 3:46authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this
- 3:51Dark World, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
- 3:57Therefore, put on every piece of God's armour so you will be able
- 4:02to resist the enemy in the time of evil.
- 4:05Then after the battle, you will still be standing firm, stand
- 4:10your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armour of
- 4:15God's righteousness for shoes. Put on the piece that comes from
- 4:21the good News, so that you will be fully prepared.
- 4:25In addition to all these, hold up the shield of faith to stop
- 4:30the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet
- 4:36and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of
- 4:40God. Pray in the Spirit at all times
- 4:44and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in
- 4:49your prayers for all believers everywhere and pray for me too.
- 4:55Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain
- 5:00God's mysterious plan that the good news is for Jews and
- 5:04Gentiles alike. I am in chains now, still
- 5:08preaching this message as God's ambassador, so pray that I will
- 5:12keep on speaking boldly for him as I should.
- 5:17To bring you up to date. Tikis will give you a full
- 5:21report about what I'm doing and how I'm getting along.
- 5:24He is a beloved brother and faithful helper in the Lord's
- 5:28work. I've sent him to you for this
- 5:31very purpose, to let you know how we are doing and to
- 5:35encourage you. Peace be with you, dear brothers
- 5:39and sisters, and May God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ
- 5:44give you love with faithfulness. May God's grace be eternally
- 5:51upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 6:04Lord, thank you for this book of Ephesians.
- 6:06Thank you for the truth that you communicate to us through it.
- 6:11And thank you for the way Paul writes.
- 6:13Thank you that he is in chains and struggling.
- 6:17But what does he do? He just shares your profound
- 6:21encouragement with his friends and he doesn't pray that his
- 6:27suffering would stop. He doesn't pray that he would
- 6:29have an easy ride. He praised that he would
- 6:33continue to be faithful to you and to share your good news with
- 6:37the people he encounters. Lord, shape our hearts as well,
- 6:43that we would see that there is so much that lies beyond our own
- 6:48comfort. And so often our days are spent
- 6:53trying to better ourselves and our own situation.
- 6:55But here you point us to your greater mission, to say that
- 7:03sharing your love and the good news about what you do for
- 7:07everyone, irrespective of who we are, that that is the most
- 7:11precious thing that we can do. So give us your boldness, give
- 7:17us your words to share with those people who will encounter
- 7:20today. We could really use the news
- 7:24that they are loved and whole in a year because of what you've
- 7:29done for them. Jesus.
- 7:31Oh, that's going to take some boldness and courage.
- 7:34So, Holy Spirit, well up in US that we would be mighty
- 7:40ambassadors for your Kingdom today.
- 7:45But ultimately, no matter how today goes, we'll know that we
- 7:49rest secure in your love and your grace.
- 7:52So we pray this all in your loving name, Jesus.
- 7:57Amen.
