- 0:00Hey, you guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. I just got back from a trip and
- 0:06so First off, I missed you guys, I missed recording, and I hope
- 0:10that you've been doing great. Feeling super grounded in the
- 0:13word and just good going into a new week.
- 0:17It's also the last week of April, which is insane.
- 0:21It's flown by, at least in my opinion, and I think that this
- 0:25is a really good moment to reset our focus, especially with what
- 0:30we're talking about today because we're going to be
- 0:32starting chapter 4 of First John.
- 0:35And I think it's something that we're honestly constantly
- 0:39navigating, whether we realize it or not.
- 0:41So let's go ahead and dive into the Scripture.
- 0:44It's going to be First John chapter 4 verses one to three
- 0:51delightfully loved friends. Don't trust every spirit, but
- 0:56carefully examine what they say to determine if they are of God.
- 1:01Because many false prophets have mingled into the world, here's
- 1:06the test for those with the genuine Spirit of God.
- 1:10They will confess Jesus as the Christ who has come in the
- 1:14flesh. Everyone who does not
- 1:16acknowledge that Jesus is from God has the spirit of
- 1:20Antichrist, which you heard was coming and is already active in
- 1:25the world. OK, I love these verses because
- 1:30John is not just warning us, he's actually giving us
- 1:34practical how to advice for how to navigate this in real time.
- 1:40And the first thing is super clear, do not believe everything
- 1:45that you hear. Beware of false quote UN quote
- 1:48truth and teachings because not every single person who claims
- 1:55authority is anointed. God appoints specific people as
- 1:59leaders and pastors and teachers, but not all leaders
- 2:04are ones who are relationally rooted in Christ.
- 2:08So with that, what do we do? Well, John tells us, test it.
- 2:14Test prophecy, test words from the Lord that you receive from
- 2:19other people. God absolutely can and wants to
- 2:25use other voices to speak into your life, but you still have to
- 2:29use discernment because the one thing that is always 100%
- 2:34accurate is the word of God. So if you want to hear from God,
- 2:39it is so important to go read your Bible to consume the verses
- 2:43on the pages. And so when you do hear
- 2:47something, I think it's good to ask a few questions.
- 2:51First of all, does this align with the Bible, what the Word
- 2:56says? 2 For the person that you're
- 2:59hearing it from, what does their circle look like?
- 3:02Are they committed to the church, to a body of believers?
- 3:063 What does their lifestyle reveal about their heart or
- 3:10their motivations? What are their pursuits?
- 3:13What are their priorities and what is their fruit?
- 3:18Because good fruit is evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in
- 3:23someone's heart. It shows whether a person is
- 3:26actually letting the Lord lead or if they're possibly quenching
- 3:31the Spirit and ignoring His work in their heart.
- 3:35And I think that this goes beyond just pastors and teachers
- 3:40because yes, John is talking about that here, but I think
- 3:43that this can also apply to friendships and relationships
- 3:48because we should be evaluating what someone truly believes by
- 3:53the evidence of their life. And that turns back on us too.
- 3:58So let me just give you all a question.
- 4:01What does your life communicate about what you believe?
- 4:06If someone took a magnifying glass and studied your life for
- 4:11a week, they looked at your speech, your thoughts, your
- 4:15interactions with other people, the way you treat others, what
- 4:20would they conclude? Because First Timothy 412 calls
- 4:25us to be set apart as believers, and that looks like being
- 4:28sanctified by our speech, by our conduct, by our faith, love and
- 4:34purity. Now here's a very critical point
- 4:38and kind of the point of this passage is the incarnation.
- 4:43What do they and what do you believe about Jesus Christ?
- 4:48That he is fully God and fully man.
- 4:52That he is the Son of God who came in the flesh, died and was
- 4:56raised again to fulfill prophecy of Scripture and is coming back
- 5:02not for the first time, but the second time.
- 5:05That is not a small detail. That is the core central message
- 5:10of our faith, and it's also where a lot of false teaching
- 5:13starts to drift, especially in other religions.
- 5:18So just remember, not everything is from God.
- 5:23That includes things you hear and even things that you believe
- 5:27about yourself. Scripture shows us that people
- 5:31can be used by the enemy to deceive if they belong to Him.
- 5:36And we live in the world as believers, but we're not of the
- 5:41world. So meaning we will encounter
- 5:44distorted ideas, worldly things, but our job is to not let those
- 5:50things shape our hearts. We have to determine to refuse
- 5:54the wayward path to stay pursuing the narrow straight. 1.
- 6:00So when you're unsure, come back to this filter.
- 6:05Does the Bible affirm it? Do I see genuine fruit in this
- 6:10speaker's life? And are they submitted to the
- 6:13Spirit not just out of convenience or comfort, but in
- 6:17full surrender? Because at the end of the day,
- 6:22credibility is built from consistent, daily communion with
- 6:27God. Let me repeat that.
- 6:30Credibility is built from consistent daily communion with
- 6:35God because you cannot fake it. When someone truly walks with
- 6:40the Lord, it shows they carry His presence in a way that is
- 6:45undeniable. So if you want to be an
- 6:48impactful ambassador for Christ, spend time with Him.
- 6:54Meet the Lord in the quiet place, and not just two minutes
- 6:58in the morning or when you have a moment at the end of the
- 7:01night, but throughout your day. Ask the Lord Holy Spirit, what
- 7:07do you want me to hear today? What do you want me to know?
- 7:11How do you want to use me? Right where I am, where my feet
- 7:14are planted. That could be in a library, at a
- 7:18lunch room, in the gym, in a coffee shop, in your own home
- 7:23with roommates or family. Y'all.
- 7:26This is where real discernment is built.
- 7:30So just a few take away reflection questions.
- 7:34Sit with these. Am I filtering what I hear
- 7:37through God's word or am I just receiving it?
- 7:41Who or what voices am I giving authority to in my life right
- 7:46now? And what kind of fruit do I
- 7:50actually see in the people that I'm listening to?
- 7:55And then turn it inward because we can't just look at other
- 7:58people, we have to look at our own hearts.
- 8:01What does my daily life communicate about what I truly
- 8:04believe? Do I really understand who Jesus
- 8:08is at the core, central part of my faith?
- 8:12So let's go ahead and closeout in prayer.
- 8:16Dear Father, thank you for your truth.
- 8:21Thank you that it never changes and you never change.
- 8:27Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- 8:31And so we cling to that. I pray for discernment in a
- 8:35world full of competing loud voices.
- 8:40I pray that you would help us to not just believe everything that
- 8:43we hear, but to evaluate and analyze it against your Word.
- 8:50Father, would you shape our lives so that it points to you
- 8:54in our speech, in our conduct, in our faith, in our love and
- 8:59our purity? Filter our thoughts, God, make
- 9:04our thoughts obedient to Christ. Cleanse our hearts.
- 9:09I pray that we would draw into a deeper and daily communion
- 9:13relationship with you so that we can recognize your voice clearly
- 9:18and so that we can walk in the truth.
- 9:21May we be children of the light, children of the day, in purity
- 9:26and righteousness and holiness. We love you Jesus, we thank you,
- 9:33thank you God, in your name we pray.
- 9:36Amen. OK guys, well that's today's
- 9:39podcast episode. So fun getting speed back on the
- 9:43podcast and record and I'm just praying for you guys.
- 9:47The all of a wonderful start to your week, a great Monday and I
- 9:51will see y'all on the next one.
