- 0:00Speaker 1: I missed you, girl. Girl, let me tell you something
- 0:03Speaker 1: I missed you too. Look at that tricept though you
- 0:07Speaker 1: like that? Yeah, I mean for a guy that doesn't
- 0:09Speaker 1: even lift anymore, you got a nice try try I
- 0:12Speaker 1: left a little bit. I left a little bit. Now,
- 0:13Speaker 1: you said you're just doing Pelton, but you're not like
- 0:15Speaker 1: curling iron. Oh No, I got a couple of weights
- 0:18Speaker 1: that I curl every now and then, just to you know,
- 0:19Speaker 1: keep my ship quick. Oh. I just thought you were
- 0:22Speaker 1: doing you were you were on a quarantine trip where
- 0:24Speaker 1: you were just like Cardio nothing else. No, I thought
- 0:27Speaker 1: you were about to say carbs and nothing else. Yeah,
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm doing that too though. By the way, a lot
- 0:33Speaker 1: of love, a lot of love for the first animation
- 0:36Speaker 1: we put out. I love it. I love it, and
- 0:39Speaker 1: it's so funny. It's only thirty seconds, but I've watched
- 0:42Speaker 1: it like nine hundred times. Yeah, it's like when we
- 0:44Speaker 1: first heard the when we first heard the theme song.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Remember how crazy we were going for the theme song
- 0:50Speaker 1: when we first heard it. For those of you don't know,
- 0:52Speaker 1: um this company, Cartooner Radio is an animation company in Brooklyn,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and they did an animation of a moment of Donald
- 1:00Speaker 1: and O my podcast of this podcast, and um, they
- 1:05Speaker 1: just you know, tagged us on Instagram and we thought
- 1:07Speaker 1: it was so funny. We hit them up and said,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you know, can we work out a situation where we'll
- 1:13Speaker 1: obviously pay you, but will you do like some quick
- 1:15Speaker 1: little thirty second moments from the podcast. And they thought
- 1:19Speaker 1: that was awesome, and so now we were starting to
- 1:22Speaker 1: roll some of them out. In the first one we
- 1:23Speaker 1: just put on our Instagram today, although um, this was,
- 1:26Speaker 1: this was, this was, this will be like a week,
- 1:28Speaker 1: this will be a few this will be like a
- 1:29Speaker 1: week week later. But anyway, they did the moment with
- 1:31Speaker 1: Donald giving Jeff Zucker noogies and the animation is so funny. Dude,
- 1:35Speaker 1: your eyes are all fun blood shot dude, Like they
- 1:39Speaker 1: knew I smoked that shit and they knew I drank
- 1:42Speaker 1: that shit that night. Well, we did talk about how
- 1:45Speaker 1: fucked up we were, yeah, but I didn't talk about
- 1:48Speaker 1: how I smoked that shit. Like when you when you drink,
- 1:50Speaker 1: your eyes don't get red like that. They made pink.
- 1:54Speaker 1: But you know what they got Maybe they're listening and
- 1:57Speaker 1: they got because another episode I mentioned how when you're
- 1:59Speaker 1: hammered you have like this this. What do you call this?
- 2:01Speaker 1: When you do this? It's a high step. I got
- 2:04Speaker 1: that ship from you, though, dude, right anyway, just a
- 2:06Speaker 1: drunk high step. And then when they in the animation,
- 2:09Speaker 1: when you're headed over to Zooker, you're like, get over here.
- 2:12Speaker 1: That shit's hilarious. What's funny out out and what I
- 2:16Speaker 1: love about On Instagram, I'm sure they're doing it on
- 2:18Speaker 1: yours too. People are like saying, Oh, you gotta do
- 2:20Speaker 1: this moment, Oh you gotta do the washcloth to be
- 2:22Speaker 1: you gotta do this. They are doing that. What's crazy
- 2:25Speaker 1: is it? I think you need to tell each and
- 2:26Speaker 1: every one of your followers that you demand that they
- 2:30Speaker 1: follow me or fuck off, because I would never curse
- 2:33Speaker 1: of my followers, don't. I don't listen. I look at
- 2:37Speaker 1: what your numbers are, and I look at what my
- 2:39Speaker 1: numbers are on Instagram, And I gotta be honest with you,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm a little jealous, dude, like little Jeller. You're assuming
- 2:45Speaker 1: that they're all scrubs, folks. They might be some people
- 2:48Speaker 1: that love Garden State and uh and and so where
- 2:51Speaker 1: are my clueless people at? Huh? Where am I remember
- 2:53Speaker 1: that tightens people at? Where are my mother fucking I'm
- 2:56Speaker 1: telling you right now, where are my mother fucking waiting
- 2:58Speaker 1: to exhale? People at where my kids ran? Some people
- 3:02Speaker 1: at where my tripping? People at where Sabrina Listen. I
- 3:06Speaker 1: gotta put it out there, man, because where they at
- 3:08Speaker 1: they need to represent your Homie Spimoni people. Random, Homie
- 3:11Speaker 1: Spemoni where my next day are people at? Yo? Come
- 3:14Speaker 1: on now. Homie Spimoni is a film that Donald made. Um.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It's basically the plot of The Jerk, except instead of
- 3:20Speaker 1: a white baby being dropped off at a black family's home,
- 3:24Speaker 1: Donald's a black baby that's dropped off at an Italian
- 3:27Speaker 1: family's home. Right, No, no no, no, I'm not even dropped off.
- 3:29Speaker 1: They they literally kidnapped me pretty much o the kidnap. Yeah.
- 3:33Speaker 1: They find me floating in the river in Italy and
- 3:39Speaker 1: the mom kidnaps me like like Moses. Uh, well yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 1: I guess so, but Moses was you know, wasn't Moses
- 3:47Speaker 1: put in a basket and yeah, try to escape? Yes?
- 3:51Speaker 1: Do I have my old Testament? Right? Um? We didn't
- 3:54Speaker 1: they put Moses and the wife yeah, no, Moses putting Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and then Para's wife found found. I went to Hebrew
- 4:01Speaker 1: school now, Donald, I have a question for you, Um,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Homie s Pimoni for those of you who don't know
- 4:07Speaker 1: Whoppie Goldberg and the Great Paul, the Great Paul Mooney.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Now do you rock? You do an Italian New York accent? Right?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Give us a sa you want to hear a sample
- 4:19Speaker 1: of my This is the character right, listener right, my
- 4:23Speaker 1: name's Renato, all right, and this is how we do
- 4:25Speaker 1: things where I'm from. Okay, It's very simple. It's almost
- 4:30Speaker 1: like a New York accent too. It's like, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I've seen a lot. It was a lot thicker back
- 4:35Speaker 1: in the day when I was doing it. It was
- 4:36Speaker 1: so hard like it was thick, you know. Um, Jamie
- 4:40Speaker 1: Lynn Siegler, right, yes, yes, your love interest. She was
- 4:44Speaker 1: my love interest on it. She's like you sound like
- 4:46Speaker 1: the guys I grew up with. Oh, that's a compliment
- 4:49Speaker 1: because it was a compliment. I think she's a Jersey girl,
- 4:52Speaker 1: is she? I don't know. They got a lot of
- 4:54Speaker 1: Italians in Jersey. Listen, I gotta tell you something. I've
- 4:57Speaker 1: never seen that movie, but I dude, you've never seen
- 5:00Speaker 1: anything I've been now. I've seen a lot of bullshit, man.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I remember I showed you. Fucking remember the time. I
- 5:06Speaker 1: was like, yo, just watch remember the Titans on the Plane.
- 5:08Speaker 1: You got halfway through it and you were like, I mean, no,
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's cool. That's not a true story. That's not a
- 5:15Speaker 1: true story. I'm gonna watch that film because I know
- 5:17Speaker 1: how much people love it, and I love Denzel Um.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I love so you've never seen remember the Titans. I
- 5:22Speaker 1: have never seen Remember the Titans. See that's what I'm
- 5:25Speaker 1: talking about, right there, guy. But you didn't read the
- 5:26Speaker 1: Garden State script, so fuck off. But I saw the
- 5:29Speaker 1: Garden State script and I read it. You don't even
- 5:32Speaker 1: didn't even hold the script in your hand. Yeah I did.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I know. I said I would like you to read this,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and you said, are there any black people in it?
- 5:39Speaker 1: And I said there's two, but you're not right for them.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And I already cast method Man And you said that
- 5:43Speaker 1: I'm not That's right. I do. That is true. But
- 5:46Speaker 1: I will tell you this, what dick, What a dick, dude.

- 5:56Speaker 1: please do all right, I'm telling you right now, I'm
- 5:59Speaker 1: gonna lay it down. I'm gonna lay down the law.
- 6:00Speaker 1: You know you have? Where my kick Ass two? People at? Yo?
- 6:03Speaker 1: Where y'all at kick Ass two? If you Donald's and
- 6:06Speaker 1: Kickasso Donald's? Now I'm talking about Donald. Where y'all at? Oh,
- 6:10Speaker 1: you're circling back to Instagram. Well, Donald, I'm sorry that
- 6:13Speaker 1: you're upset about this, but the good not upset. I'm
- 6:16Speaker 1: just a little jealous. Well, I think that you should
- 6:18Speaker 1: give some love to the people that are following you
- 6:20Speaker 1: and so they don't feel like what we don't matter
- 6:23Speaker 1: to you, Donald, No, they definitely matter you. People that
- 6:25Speaker 1: are following me right now. I love you. I love you. Yes,
- 6:32Speaker 1: you are special to me and we together are building
- 6:37Speaker 1: a great foundation and an institution. But what is necessary
- 6:43Speaker 1: right now is for you to tell your friends that
- 6:46Speaker 1: six hundred thousand isn't enough. Tell your friends, tell your wife. Listen.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Today's a very special episode of this show because today's
- 6:55Speaker 1: the first time we're having on as our guest someone
- 6:58Speaker 1: who was not on the show. Him Um, someone who
- 7:01Speaker 1: had nothing to do with the show, but I wanted
- 7:04Speaker 1: to have him on. We wanted to have him on
- 7:05Speaker 1: because he's an incredible writer and amongst many things that
- 7:10Speaker 1: he's written, He's written a self published book about Scrubs
- 7:14Speaker 1: that I'm going to promote many many times. It's called
- 7:16Speaker 1: where do You Think We Are? And it's ten illustrated
- 7:19Speaker 1: essays about Scrubs and was written by sch Serrano and
- 7:23Speaker 1: it was illustrated by Arto Torres and it is really awesome.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And he is, I don't know how well you know
- 7:29Speaker 1: Shade Donald. We'll get We're gonna get him on before
- 7:31Speaker 1: you tell me anything about how you well you know him?
- 7:33Speaker 1: But I follow him on Twitter and he's very entertaining.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know him well before we
- 7:39Speaker 1: get into that five six, seven, eight stories about show
- 7:43Speaker 1: we made about a bunch of nurses stories. Yea, yeah, here,
- 8:05Speaker 1: wait for it. There he is wait fresh cutting, everything
- 8:10Speaker 1: is fresh there. Oh man, it's so nice to finally
- 8:16Speaker 1: meet you. I am I am like one of your
- 8:18Speaker 1: one of your many many Twitter followers, and I feel
- 8:21Speaker 1: like I know you. But it's so nice to finally
- 8:23Speaker 1: meet in person. Yeah. I'm excited. I'm really excited to
- 8:25Speaker 1: be here. I've been I've been waiting on hold since
- 8:28Speaker 1: twelve in the afternoon for three hours now, just for
- 8:31Speaker 1: that don't want I don't want to miss it. I
- 8:32Speaker 1: didn't want to miss this one. You know what, You've
- 8:34Speaker 1: been sitting there. You've been sitting there. We didn't put
- 8:37Speaker 1: you on hold. You just this was like a self
- 8:38Speaker 1: proclaim hole. Yes, he want he didn't want to fuck
- 8:41Speaker 1: up Donald. So he's been sitting there with his mic Now, Sha,
- 8:45Speaker 1: before you say anything, I gotta tell you. I was
- 8:47Speaker 1: doing research for the show on you because I know
- 8:50Speaker 1: you for being very popular on Twitter. I encourage you
- 8:53Speaker 1: to follow Sha and we'll get his handle out before
- 8:55Speaker 1: the show ends. But he I'm reading all about you
- 8:59Speaker 1: and your career is amazing. But I'm I started reading
- 9:02Speaker 1: like he wrote. Uh. This second book was called the
- 9:05Speaker 1: Rap Yearbook, the most important rap song from every year
- 9:08Speaker 1: since nineteen seventy nine. Then he's got another book called
- 9:12Speaker 1: Basketball and Other Things, that Obama said was one of
- 9:15Speaker 1: his favorite things. And then he's got another And I'm
- 9:16Speaker 1: sitting here going I'm gonna lose Donald phaseon to share
- 9:21Speaker 1: like I'm sitting here being like this this was a
- 9:24Speaker 1: bad idea. The man has written best selling books on
- 9:26Speaker 1: rap and basketball and I'm gonna lose him. And you
- 9:29Speaker 1: know what, I love and you know what I love.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Oh shit, you know what. What's what's funny is is uh,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I got a chance. I met Donald one time. I
- 9:39Speaker 1: don't know if you remember. I do remember. I remember
- 9:41Speaker 1: that I look the stook before I even read the book.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Oh you read it, Okay, I didn't read the whole thing. Yeah, so,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but before before I even knew that it existed, Zach
- 9:58Speaker 1: was like you were coming on and I look you
- 10:00Speaker 1: up on uh, I googled you, and I was like, oh,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I met this dude. I met this dude. And when
- 10:05Speaker 1: I was going to do first take, I thought you
- 10:08Speaker 1: were going to do first take that day. Also, but
- 10:10Speaker 1: I also met you. Your wife was with you, right,
- 10:12Speaker 1: that's your wife. Yeah, and she and I got to
- 10:15Speaker 1: talk a little bit more than you and I did.
- 10:17Speaker 1: But I, I mean, and then I read the essay
- 10:19Speaker 1: and you made it seem like you were like all crazy,
- 10:22Speaker 1: like holy shit, holy shit, you got a little bit
- 10:25Speaker 1: cooler than that. Now my head his head, Yeah, absolutely,
- 10:30Speaker 1: inside of my head. It's only been a few times
- 10:32Speaker 1: in my life. I was starstruck. But it was me
- 10:34Speaker 1: Denzel Washington and Minael Jordan. I know, I know, I know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: I'm watching you walk in that room. I don't know
- 10:39Speaker 1: if it's because I was surprised or because I had
- 10:42Speaker 1: just finished, Like I was already working on the Scrubs thing,
- 10:44Speaker 1: so I had gone through the whole series again, whatever
- 10:47Speaker 1: it was. But yeah, when you walked in there, I
- 10:48Speaker 1: was like, holy fucking shit, Like I was trying so
- 10:50Speaker 1: hard not to not to wig out. You took you
- 10:53Speaker 1: were there for You were there for a book, right,
- 10:55Speaker 1: you were there for another book, but it was it
- 10:58Speaker 1: wasn't the rap book. It was the basketball book right now?
- 11:00Speaker 1: Was the basketball one? Came out in twenty seventeen October
- 11:04Speaker 1: of last year. I did movies and other things, movies,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and so that's when I was. I was in New York, um,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you know, doing all the press stuff. Okay, I'm sorry
- 11:13Speaker 1: before we talk. This is what's gonna happen. This is
- 11:17Speaker 1: my nightmare, right Joel. They just suddenly they turned my
- 11:21Speaker 1: mic down and they just go off. Well, I just
- 11:23Speaker 1: wanted to get into the basketball thing. You said, Mike,
- 11:26Speaker 1: you think my game would be more like like you
- 11:28Speaker 1: imagine my game being like PJ. Tucker. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna agree with that. I'm gonna I knew it.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna agree with that. I'd watched enough. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 11:37Speaker 1: a lot of jump shots, some defense, very competitive and
- 11:41Speaker 1: talks a lot of shit. Yeah that's me. That's I
- 11:46Speaker 1: wish I had a little bit of a you know,
- 11:47Speaker 1: a silkier game. I wish my game was more like
- 11:49Speaker 1: Clay Thompson. But PJ. Tucker was spot on. Man, he's
- 11:53Speaker 1: a he's a great Uh. I don't even know if
- 11:55Speaker 1: you would consider him a role player. He's just like
- 11:57Speaker 1: a glue guy, right, Yeah, he's in a central player
- 12:00Speaker 1: on that on that Rockets team. I lived in Laramy
- 12:03Speaker 1: and I lived in Houston for fourteen years, so we
- 12:05Speaker 1: were there like when he showed up. And then he's
- 12:07Speaker 1: one of those guys who, like, if you go to
- 12:09Speaker 1: the city where he's playing, everybody there just fucking loves him. Yeah,
- 12:12Speaker 1: because of all this stuff he does. Yeah, Now, Shay,
- 12:14Speaker 1: I have a question. Do you know do you have
- 12:17Speaker 1: your book? Like could Donald about your rap book? And
- 12:19Speaker 1: Shay is m Everything he writes becomes a best seller,
- 12:23Speaker 1: including um the Rap Yearbook, the most important rap song
- 12:27Speaker 1: from every year since nineteen seventy nine, discussed, debated, and deconstructed.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Billboard said this was one of the best hundred best
- 12:35Speaker 1: music books of all time, which holy shit, man, congratulations
- 12:39Speaker 1: on an accomplishment like that, un round of thunderous applause. Yeah, Dan,
- 12:43Speaker 1: please put in some thunder supause. You won't hear it, Shay,
- 12:47Speaker 1: so just imagine it. It's just it's like a stadium crazy.
- 12:50Speaker 1: You listen to the podcast, right, Shay. I've seen you
- 12:52Speaker 1: on so you know you know how Dan really brings
- 12:55Speaker 1: the thunder supplause. Um. Now, Shay, if Donald were to say,
- 12:58Speaker 1: because Donald loves rap, if you were to like mention
- 13:01Speaker 1: a year, you don't have this memorize, right, or do you?
- 13:03Speaker 1: Because if he would just say, like if Donald were
- 13:06Speaker 1: to be like, all right, ninety seven, would you be like, oh,
- 13:08Speaker 1: this is what I wrote about that I believe, so
- 13:11Speaker 1: ninety seven is is puff daddy? If I'm not mistaken. Um,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I want to say, you can look it up. It's
- 13:18Speaker 1: so good. As as sad as I am about how
- 13:21Speaker 1: much how well you guys are hitting it off. I
- 13:22Speaker 1: just feel like, once this rap conversation starts, It'll be
- 13:25Speaker 1: Donald's favorite conversation in the world because he really really
- 13:28Speaker 1: loves rap, Like as long as I've known him. Yeah,
- 13:32Speaker 1: it's the best music in the world. It was a
- 13:33Speaker 1: can't Nobody hold Me Down? Can't know? Okay with him
- 13:37Speaker 1: and with him and Mace. Yeah, Okay, that was one
- 13:39Speaker 1: because because that was when when when rap had like
- 13:45Speaker 1: they were doing the whole shiny suit thing. It was
- 13:46Speaker 1: like it became all about opulence and much High Williams
- 13:48Speaker 1: and the High Williams a mint music videos, right that
- 13:51Speaker 1: those ones came a little bit. Yeah, right around then,
- 13:54Speaker 1: I remember around ninety seven, I just picked Nobody hold
- 13:57Speaker 1: Me Down? Was High Williams. Yeah, because I was when
- 14:00Speaker 1: I was peeing fresh out of college. I was peeing
- 14:03Speaker 1: on rap videos in New York and I don't really
- 14:06Speaker 1: know the music that well, but I remember like Hype
- 14:08Speaker 1: Williams was a god at the time. And that's right
- 14:10Speaker 1: around the time all those Mace Puffy videos were coming out.
- 14:12Speaker 1: That was the one way they went in the desert, right,
- 14:14Speaker 1: And uh, isn't j Low in it too? Yeah? She's
- 14:17Speaker 1: in that one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, alright, Donald, do
- 14:19Speaker 1: you want to pick a year now that he's got
- 14:21Speaker 1: it up? Just pick us a year? I mean, but
- 14:23Speaker 1: I mean, okay, ninety two, that's a hard one. Nineteen
- 14:27Speaker 1: ninety two. Oh, like I don't have I don't have
- 14:29Speaker 1: the book up. I was just thinking the song i't
- 14:32Speaker 1: mean to put you on I don't mean to put
- 14:33Speaker 1: you on the spot. I just wondered if you knew.
- 14:37Speaker 1: But I will say I know, like I know, ninety
- 14:40Speaker 1: two was nothing but a g thing. Wow, Yeah, there
- 14:44Speaker 1: was a lot, Right, that's a great, great record, man, Right,
- 14:46Speaker 1: that's really really good. That Chronic was one of Oh
- 14:49Speaker 1: my gosh, man, there were a lot of great albums
- 14:52Speaker 1: that came out, though. I feel like in ninety two,
- 14:55Speaker 1: you know what I mean, that was a yeah, I graduated,
- 14:56Speaker 1: I think from high school. I'm pretty I liked that
- 14:59Speaker 1: song roll down the Street smoking and sipping on gin
- 15:04Speaker 1: and juice. So that's not the doggiest style album. And
- 15:09Speaker 1: there's like there's like a constant debate between which is
- 15:11Speaker 1: a better G funk album, between between the Chronic and
- 15:14Speaker 1: doggest Style both the dope man, pick one, pick one?
- 15:18Speaker 1: Which one do you want to listen to right now? Shit? Man?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Well because no, because what happened is with hold do
- 15:28Speaker 1: what happened is yeah, it's hard man, because Doggie Style,
- 15:31Speaker 1: Nate Dog, all these cats are on that record. Man,
- 15:37Speaker 1: it's hard because you know, I take it back, I
- 15:41Speaker 1: go chronic. Just because of deep Cover. I could feel
- 15:44Speaker 1: it heard that. I remember when deep Cover of the
- 15:47Speaker 1: movie came out and that song was on the deep
- 15:49Speaker 1: Cover soundtrack, and my boy played me that shit and
- 15:52Speaker 1: we listened to that ship over. We listened to that
- 15:54Speaker 1: song over and over and over again, and this is
- 15:58Speaker 1: before the beat with East Coast West Coast stuff, and
- 16:00Speaker 1: it was just like, Yo, this is the this is
- 16:03Speaker 1: the dopest thing I ever heard in my life. Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 1: It's one of those one of those moments where you like,
- 16:07Speaker 1: I've never heard something like this. Yeah, here's snoop sort
- 16:10Speaker 1: of lillygagging out into the song, like who is this guy? Yeah?
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yeah that and the beat was fucking fire and the
- 16:16Speaker 1: fucking and then the cook was yeah, and you don't
- 16:20Speaker 1: stop because it's one night seven on it, Undercover cop.
- 16:25Speaker 1: That should make a documentary about this, because I read
- 16:27Speaker 1: that there was talking of it. Did they ever make
- 16:29Speaker 1: it a documentary about of your book? Oh? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So what happened is a production company got the rights
- 16:36Speaker 1: for it, and then we signed up with the Roots.
- 16:38Speaker 1: They became like executive producers on it, and then they
- 16:40Speaker 1: sold it to We sold a series to AMC and
- 16:43Speaker 1: they did a six episode thing where it was like
- 16:45Speaker 1: six episodes. Each episode was about one particular song. They're
- 16:48Speaker 1: an hour long, and so it became like a video over.
- 16:52Speaker 1: It was really cool. I got to go out to
- 16:53Speaker 1: New York. They did like a concert, The Roost did
- 16:56Speaker 1: a concert before the and then they showed the The
- 17:00Speaker 1: one of the episodes is the one that they did
- 17:01Speaker 1: on Jesus Walks, and it was it was really really
- 17:05Speaker 1: cool to what's so cool? Because as I'm listening to
- 17:07Speaker 1: you talk about it, I mean, I just think it
- 17:08Speaker 1: would be such an amazing I can understan why I'd
- 17:10Speaker 1: be amazing series. I wouldn't check that out. I definitely
- 17:12Speaker 1: it was great, you know what his need is. So
- 17:14Speaker 1: they we got all signed up and they like, we
- 17:16Speaker 1: sold the series and they started working on it, and
- 17:18Speaker 1: they gave me a phone call and they're like, hey,
- 17:20Speaker 1: do you want to call in and like we're brainstorming
- 17:22Speaker 1: and helping out doing whatever. And I said, oh, yeah, yeah,
- 17:24Speaker 1: like that'd be cool because I like I know a
- 17:26Speaker 1: lot about REP we're doing this whole thing. And I
- 17:28Speaker 1: called in and Black Thought and quest Lever both in there.
- 17:31Speaker 1: And like everything that somebody brought up, like I had
- 17:35Speaker 1: like a third hand story, like oh yeah, I heard
- 17:37Speaker 1: a story about a party that happened at this thing.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And no matter what it was, quest lever Black thought
- 17:41Speaker 1: they were like, oh yeah, I was at that party.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I wrote to I don't want to I don't want
- 17:47Speaker 1: to help anymore, Like yeah, guys, clearly you got this.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I was gonna fall back. That's amazing. Yeah, you know,
- 17:53Speaker 1: I've been at some places like where crazy things happened,
- 17:57Speaker 1: like and I was just I just happened to be
- 17:59Speaker 1: there when the things happened, like you know what I mean,
- 18:02Speaker 1: Like I was at the party where Biggie got killed.
- 18:05Speaker 1: You know what you were? Yeah? Yeah? Yeah, yeah did
- 18:08Speaker 1: you did you? Did you hear? Like yeah, I heard guns.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I was outside, so I heard the gunshots. I also
- 18:15Speaker 1: I spoke to him before all of it happened. Oh shit,
- 18:17Speaker 1: you never told me this. You saved this for shape, dude.
- 18:21Speaker 1: You're not a hip hop You're not a hip hop
- 18:23Speaker 1: but I mean I'm not a hip hop dude, but
- 18:24Speaker 1: I'm a pop culture fan. You could have told me
- 18:26Speaker 1: you were at that event. Yeah, dude, I was at
- 18:29Speaker 1: that event event, and I spoke to him, and then
- 18:32Speaker 1: the next morning I found out he was there. I
- 18:33Speaker 1: actually found out that night that he had gotten shot.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Somebody came around the corner and told me, you know, yo,
- 18:39Speaker 1: they just fucking got bigg and I was like, get
- 18:41Speaker 1: the fuck out of here. I remember telling Ricky Bell
- 18:43Speaker 1: from Bell Bib de Vote and he was like, shut
- 18:45Speaker 1: the fuck up, dude, you don't know what you're talking about.
- 18:47Speaker 1: And then the next morning my boy Dion Richmond called
- 18:50Speaker 1: me up on the phone and was like, Yo, they
- 18:52Speaker 1: killed Big last night. And I was like holy and
- 18:54Speaker 1: and I was like, holy shit. I was there, dude.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I was. I spoke to him right before. You know
- 18:59Speaker 1: what I mean. I've did this couple of instances, like
- 19:01Speaker 1: I was at Nell's the night all that shit went
- 19:03Speaker 1: down with Tupac and the girl on the dance floor
- 19:06Speaker 1: and stuff like that. Like I was at I was
- 19:08Speaker 1: at the club hanging out with my friends and stuff
- 19:10Speaker 1: like that, and I was there like just a bunch
- 19:13Speaker 1: of things. Man, it's weird. It's it's My connection to
- 19:16Speaker 1: hip hop runs deep, man. I love I love it
- 19:18Speaker 1: so much. And when I was when I was younger,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I would be you would frequently find me at some
- 19:23Speaker 1: of these events that were considered you know, later on
- 19:28Speaker 1: that were considered iconic or pivotal moments in artists careers,
- 19:32Speaker 1: especially in Tupacs and bigs. Those were two big moment.
- 19:35Speaker 1: One one was the death of one and one was
- 19:37Speaker 1: where everybody started looking at somebody as a true troublemaker,
- 19:41Speaker 1: which was bullshit, but that was that was what. From
- 19:43Speaker 1: that moment on, Tupacs lane shifted from you know, actor
- 19:48Speaker 1: rapper to activists to you know, his whole run with
- 19:53Speaker 1: death Row and the whole East Coast, West Coast Beef
- 19:55Speaker 1: and all of that stuff. A lot of it stemmed
- 19:57Speaker 1: from that moment. Do you think it even? Do you
- 20:00Speaker 1: think any I wasn't that I wasn't. I don't know
- 20:01Speaker 1: what right? Right? You know, like that butterfly effect thing
- 20:06Speaker 1: where one thing happens and then it causes everything to happen. Right,
- 20:09Speaker 1: If I take myself out of the equation, everyone would
- 20:12Speaker 1: have got everybody would have got Donald. Donald like bumped
- 20:15Speaker 1: into some waiter who then got in a bad mood
- 20:17Speaker 1: and was rude to Tupac, and all of a sudden,
- 20:19Speaker 1: all this shit happened because Donald did do I do
- 20:21Speaker 1: either of y'all follow a rider named chio Hadari Coker. No, Okay,
- 20:27Speaker 1: so he like works on a ton of stuff, but
- 20:30Speaker 1: he like worked on the biggie movie um Low Riders
- 20:33Speaker 1: Creed too, like a bunch of the stuff that I liked.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I started following him. But just today he was talking
- 20:37Speaker 1: about I think it was today, maybe might have been
- 20:39Speaker 1: last night or yesterday, but he was talking about when
- 20:42Speaker 1: when Tupac did Juice, and he was saying, like when
- 20:47Speaker 1: he got the role of Bishop, which was like the
- 20:49Speaker 1: guy who causes all the trouble in it. Um, like
- 20:51Speaker 1: that was the beginning of his like gangster rapper, Like
- 20:54Speaker 1: it set him on that path, right, and like that's
- 20:56Speaker 1: just crazy to think about. Like I was a little
- 20:58Speaker 1: thing like that, you know what I'm saying. Yeah, I was.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I was in Juice. I had a really tiny role
- 21:03Speaker 1: in that movie. And the one thing I remember the
- 21:06Speaker 1: most about that movie was the premier and after seeing it,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and you know, Tupac walking into the it was like
- 21:15Speaker 1: it lows on forty second Street or something like that.
- 21:18Speaker 1: It was in Times Square, I remember that, and he
- 21:20Speaker 1: walked into the area where everybody was being let out
- 21:23Speaker 1: of the movie, and it felt like he had like
- 21:25Speaker 1: the glow around like the Bruce Leroy glow around him, man,
- 21:28Speaker 1: because you just knew at that moment he was out
- 21:31Speaker 1: of him and yeah, he was just out here. That's
- 21:34Speaker 1: when I became a fan of his, you know what
- 21:36Speaker 1: I mean, Like as an actor, I you know, checked
- 21:39Speaker 1: on his stuff all the time, all of the movies
- 21:41Speaker 1: he made and stuff like that. When I was younger,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I remember thinking he's a better actor than he is
- 21:45Speaker 1: a rapper. Dude. I remember thinking that that's like an
- 21:49Speaker 1: argument you could honestly, legitimately make, like he was unbelievable
- 21:52Speaker 1: as an actor. Yeah, yeah, he was a very good actor.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So Shaye, tell us like how you came to Scrubs
- 21:58Speaker 1: and wrote this book, because I just I was so
- 22:04Speaker 1: moved by a lot of it. I mean, it's funny
- 22:06Speaker 1: your book, but also there's moments I was reading and
- 22:10Speaker 1: would that would give me goosebumps? Could you articulate moments
- 22:12Speaker 1: and Scrubs sometimes I think better than moments and Scrubs
- 22:15Speaker 1: even were right? And I know, I mean, and I
- 22:18Speaker 1: appreciate that. We love what a fan you are. And
- 22:21Speaker 1: I was reading something you wrote about the episode we're
- 22:25Speaker 1: going to talk about today my occurrence and I got
- 22:28Speaker 1: goosebumps when you wrote it. It was about it was
- 22:30Speaker 1: about when I find out that Brandon Frazier's character has
- 22:33Speaker 1: leukemia and Judy's standing there, and I'm not bullshitting you.
- 22:36Speaker 1: When I rewatched the episode today, it was even more
- 22:39Speaker 1: moving to me. It was really unique. It was a
- 22:40Speaker 1: really unique experience because I don't even remember the moment
- 22:43Speaker 1: And then I read your essay in his book where
- 22:46Speaker 1: Do You Think We Are? And it gave me goosebumps.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And then I rewatched the moment today and I was
- 22:50Speaker 1: so much more moved by it because I had your backstory.
- 22:52Speaker 1: So so I encourage you, if you're a Scrubs fan,
- 22:55Speaker 1: to get this book. But anyway, I just wanted to know.
- 22:58Speaker 1: It's a long question, but how did you come to Scrubs?
- 23:00Speaker 1: And then how did you come to write this book.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I came to Scrubs late. This was this was back
- 23:05Speaker 1: when it was on Netflix, so it's a few you know,
- 23:08Speaker 1: several years ago. I didn't I had never really I
- 23:10Speaker 1: didn't watch it when it was like on an ABC
- 23:12Speaker 1: or MBC or anything like that. But I started catching
- 23:15Speaker 1: it when I think it showed up. I got in
- 23:16Speaker 1: a Comedy Central or you know, you know, on one
- 23:18Speaker 1: of those like cable channels. I was like, this is
- 23:21Speaker 1: this is like a cool show, but there was no
- 23:22Speaker 1: way to like rewatch the whole thing. You just catch
- 23:25Speaker 1: whatever episodes you can, and then it popped up on
- 23:27Speaker 1: Netflix and Laramie, my wife, she also likes the shows
- 23:30Speaker 1: who were like, oh, let's like I haven't seen like
- 23:32Speaker 1: the first four seasons or something, let's sit down and
- 23:34Speaker 1: watch it. And so you like that's how it started,
- 23:37Speaker 1: was a few years ago, and then it just became
- 23:39Speaker 1: one of those shows that we watched our whole way
- 23:41Speaker 1: through it. We like fell in love with everybody on there.
- 23:44Speaker 1: And it was one of the ones where it's like
- 23:46Speaker 1: it's been a long day and I needed like unwind
- 23:48Speaker 1: and relax and I need to like feel some emotions
- 23:51Speaker 1: of some sort. So let me put but this one
- 23:53Speaker 1: on because I think I wrote this in a thing,
- 23:56Speaker 1: but I think Scrubs is the best TV show ever
- 23:59Speaker 1: at like balancing between those two worlds. You'll talk about
- 24:02Speaker 1: it a lot of the time, like how hard of
- 24:03Speaker 1: a transition that is to make from going from something
- 24:07Speaker 1: like totally silly and like ridiculous immediately into something just
- 24:12Speaker 1: outlandish or you know, like crazy serious. Um. So that's
- 24:19Speaker 1: how we started watching that show, and it just became
- 24:21Speaker 1: like like a ritual. Every so often we're like, we're
- 24:24Speaker 1: going to restart Scrubs again and we're gonna watch it,
- 24:26Speaker 1: and then that's gonna be like what we do. Right.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I love it And you and your wife getting debates
- 24:31Speaker 1: about the show. I saw and part of the book
- 24:33Speaker 1: is an email conversation you have about whether or not
- 24:36Speaker 1: she likes JD or not. Yea, And I really appreciated
- 24:39Speaker 1: your point of view more than because Larmie Laramie loves
- 24:45Speaker 1: the show, but it's JD's not her favorite character. And
- 24:48Speaker 1: I appreciated Jay debating why he should be. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:52Speaker 1: that's like yeah. So that we started watching the show,
- 24:55Speaker 1: and I realized, like you watch a show, and depending
- 24:58Speaker 1: on like who you are, the type of person you are,
- 25:00Speaker 1: you just watched it a little bit different than everybody else.
- 25:02Speaker 1: And I realized at some point that we were very
- 25:04Speaker 1: much watching the show differently. I was watching it waiting
- 25:07Speaker 1: for like the JD moment to happen, when you like
- 25:09Speaker 1: make your eyes water or you like say a thing
- 25:11Speaker 1: real seriously, and she was watching it for like for
- 25:14Speaker 1: like a Turk and Carlos situation or a doctor Cox
- 25:17Speaker 1: situation or whatever, and so like, well we should, you know,
- 25:20Speaker 1: let's talk about this a little bit. And uh, my favor,
- 25:24Speaker 1: my favor. I was skimming through the book because you know,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I'm not but I don't take it personally. He skimmed
- 25:30Speaker 1: through the scripts for the fucking episodes. I'm not one.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I'm not a great reader. And my attentions, my my
- 25:36Speaker 1: attention focused on to if j D and Turk were
- 25:42Speaker 1: to ever do a buddy cop movie, what would it be?
- 25:44Speaker 1: And you go through a bunch of a bunch of
- 25:47Speaker 1: lists of what movies and I immediately went for running
- 25:50Speaker 1: Scared with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hinds, Like that's the
- 25:53Speaker 1: immediate one I went to. And I was like, I
- 25:55Speaker 1: bet you he doesn't have that on the list, And
- 25:57Speaker 1: sure enough, it's right there on the lists. Over the years,
- 26:03Speaker 1: we've always talked about it's never happened but so far,
- 26:06Speaker 1: but we've always talked about wanting to do a buddy
- 26:08Speaker 1: cop or buddy movie of some kind together. Um. I
- 26:11Speaker 1: was obsessed with trying to do like a Spies like
- 26:13Speaker 1: Us thing because I thought Donald and I could really do.
- 26:17Speaker 1: We both love playing guy wiyhing over his head and
- 26:21Speaker 1: the idea, and like, I mean, I don't want to.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I would never dare to attempt to remake Spies Like
- 26:25Speaker 1: Us because I love that movie. But the premise of that,
- 26:27Speaker 1: like two spies that are fuck ups that get in
- 26:30Speaker 1: way over their head. I thought Donald and I would
- 26:31Speaker 1: be really funny yet, but um, but it's funny. I
- 26:34Speaker 1: don't that you wrote a section in the book about that,
- 26:35Speaker 1: because Donald and I always talked about wanting to do
- 26:37Speaker 1: something like that. Yeah, but like, yeah, go ahead, man,
- 26:40Speaker 1: oh I was gonna say, that's how you could tell.
- 26:41Speaker 1: I was like, I had just finished up the movie
- 26:43Speaker 1: book at the same time I was doing the Scrubs thing,
- 26:46Speaker 1: and I had rewatched all of it like buddy cop movies,
- 26:48Speaker 1: and I was like, yeah, this is like this makes
- 26:50Speaker 1: too much sense, doesn't work. It does make sense, man,
- 26:54Speaker 1: I think Turk and j D would And and it
- 26:57Speaker 1: really comes through Zach on the episode your first episode
- 27:00Speaker 1: that you directed, where we're doing the whole Heather Gram thing.
- 27:04Speaker 1: It really comes through there, like that's a buddy cop
- 27:07Speaker 1: movie or a buddy comedy in itself right there. These
- 27:10Speaker 1: two dudes go on to adventure and it's a silly
- 27:14Speaker 1: one too, so his boy can get some ass, you
- 27:16Speaker 1: know what I mean. That's with a letter from Eliot. Actually,
- 27:19Speaker 1: Sha wrote you wrote that in the in the book
- 27:21Speaker 1: a little bit too, because you're talking about Molly Shannon's
- 27:23Speaker 1: character in that episode, and that's one of my favorite
- 27:25Speaker 1: episodes ever. I uh, we bring it up a lot
- 27:27Speaker 1: because it was a pivotal moment for me because it
- 27:29Speaker 1: was the first one I got to direct, and it
- 27:32Speaker 1: was it was epic and Donald and I went on
- 27:34Speaker 1: a quest that all took place over in one night.
- 27:36Speaker 1: You know. For budget, most of the time we would
- 27:39Speaker 1: you know, be confined to the hospital with with going
- 27:41Speaker 1: out a little bit here there. But uh, you know,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it's very expensive to bring a full film crew out
- 27:46Speaker 1: into the real world. And and sometimes what Bill would
- 27:48Speaker 1: do is he'd sort of save up, so we'd we'd
- 27:50Speaker 1: have episodes that were mostly contained to the world of
- 27:52Speaker 1: the hospital, and then he'd use the budget money he'd
- 27:55Speaker 1: save then we'd do like a big ass one. That's
- 27:57Speaker 1: why they'd be like the Wizard of Oz or the
- 27:59Speaker 1: Medieval Times one or this one with Heather where we
- 28:01Speaker 1: were you know, out all night long. Yeah, Um, I
- 28:05Speaker 1: wanted to ask you, Shay. I wanted to say, just
- 28:08Speaker 1: before we get in the episode, Um, I really even
- 28:11Speaker 1: impressed by how hard you hustle and work. And you know,
- 28:15Speaker 1: we're both on Twitter. We're all on Twitter, and I
- 28:17Speaker 1: always see a lot of writers asking you for advice
- 28:19Speaker 1: and how do I do it. I'm just so impressed
- 28:22Speaker 1: with how hard you work. You write your ass off,
- 28:27Speaker 1: you then go off and you really talk to your
- 28:31Speaker 1: followers and say, hey, support the cause I'm here working
- 28:34Speaker 1: my ass off and I made a thing I think
- 28:37Speaker 1: you're gonna like. And I don't know, I just I'm
- 28:39Speaker 1: I've always been impressed by how hard you work. And
- 28:41Speaker 1: I wonder if you, if you wanted to speak to
- 28:43Speaker 1: that for for anyone, it could be about anyone trying
- 28:46Speaker 1: to go after their dream, but you you particularly do
- 28:49Speaker 1: it with your writing. Yeah, well, I think that's that's
- 28:52Speaker 1: probably like an extension of several different things. We grew up.
- 28:56Speaker 1: We live in San Antonio now, but I grew up
- 28:57Speaker 1: like on the other side of town. We were like
- 29:00Speaker 1: real poor. You know, nobody was like finishing school or
- 29:03Speaker 1: anything like that. So like that's always in the back
- 29:06Speaker 1: of my head, like if shit goes wrong or if
- 29:07Speaker 1: I make like a few mistakes, we could fall all
- 29:09Speaker 1: the way back there. So that's that's part of it. Um.
- 29:13Speaker 1: But also like in the in the case of the
- 29:16Speaker 1: the Scrubs thing, like this was a thing that I
- 29:19Speaker 1: was publishing independently, though is you weren't going to find
- 29:22Speaker 1: that in bookstores. The only way anybody was going to
- 29:24Speaker 1: find out about it was directly through me at the
- 29:27Speaker 1: at the start of it, you know, So like, I'm
- 29:29Speaker 1: not gonna just sit there and cross my fingers and
- 29:31Speaker 1: hope somebody like bats their way into it. Yeah. Not.
- 29:33Speaker 1: You know, I'm trying to be like the guys at
- 29:35Speaker 1: the at the fucking mall that comes spraying you with
- 29:38Speaker 1: a few you know what I'm saying, Like, I'm I'm
- 29:42Speaker 1: gonna be that. I'm gonna be that kind of salesperson,
- 29:44Speaker 1: or the guys in New York with the rap album
- 29:46Speaker 1: they always trying to get you to buy their strong Dude,
- 29:49Speaker 1: that's the strongest hustle level, because there's a part of
- 29:51Speaker 1: that hustle. It's also like strong arming you too. Yeah,
- 29:54Speaker 1: I always do it. I always do it because I
- 29:57Speaker 1: feel so bad by the time you've walked two blocks
- 29:59Speaker 1: with them, you're like, too, okay, okay, you're slick. There's
- 30:02Speaker 1: say they're smart. They're like, hey, hold this for me
- 30:04Speaker 1: real quick. And then you hold it and they're like,
- 30:06Speaker 1: all right, that's seven dollars, Like what the fuck even?
- 30:11Speaker 1: I wasn't even I wasn't even I wasn't even trying
- 30:14Speaker 1: to buy it, dude. But they're the best salesman, those guys,
- 30:17Speaker 1: because by the time you've walked a block with them, you're, yeah, yeah,
- 30:19Speaker 1: I do need to hear this. You're right, that does
- 30:20Speaker 1: sound good. Yeah. Sometimes sometimes it's like, dog, just give
- 30:28Speaker 1: me the ship. But then they're like, Donald, come on, Donald,
- 30:30Speaker 1: keep it real. Donald, I've seen this is what I
- 30:32Speaker 1: hate because I get a lot of this. I've seen
- 30:34Speaker 1: you in the movies. Dog, don't let me. Don't fucking
- 30:36Speaker 1: let me down. Now, I didn't let you down. Don't
- 30:41Speaker 1: let me down. All right? Well, I always think, you know,
- 30:45Speaker 1: in my career, the things I've done that you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: you have to put yourself out there. You have to really,
- 30:52Speaker 1: you know, I've write my own stuff. You get turned
- 30:55Speaker 1: down one hundred times, and you just got to keep
- 30:57Speaker 1: going and keep fighting for it. Keep believing yourself. And
- 31:00Speaker 1: I think that's one of the reasons I really like
- 31:02Speaker 1: what you say and do on on Twitter, because you
- 31:04Speaker 1: do a lot of philanthropic things as well. But you're
- 31:06Speaker 1: also someone who's just like, I'm going to do this
- 31:08Speaker 1: on my own. Sometimes sometimes a publisher will publish it.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Sometimes I'll publish it, but like I'm always going to
- 31:13Speaker 1: be doing my own hustle, which I really appreciate. Yeah,
- 31:16Speaker 1: thank you, Thank you very much. So, guys, we're going
- 31:18Speaker 1: to the episode. But UM, go buy Shay's book. It's
- 31:21Speaker 1: called go to the website Sacred Heart Gang dot com. Correct,
- 31:27Speaker 1: if you go to sacred If you go to Sacred
- 31:29Speaker 1: Heart Gang dot com, you can buy the book. It's
- 31:32Speaker 1: a pdf you can download. It's twenty bucks. It's really
- 31:35Speaker 1: worth it. It's amazing. I've seen some people on online
- 31:38Speaker 1: or are printing it out and kind of making their
- 31:40Speaker 1: own their own book out of it. But UM, support
- 31:43Speaker 1: independent writers. He's self published this with amazing illustrations by
- 31:48Speaker 1: Arturo Torres, and I can't I really recommend it if
- 31:51Speaker 1: you're a Scrubs fan. Um, it's it's very very entertaining parts.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Donald skimmed, he love can we talk about the illustrations
- 31:59Speaker 1: real quick. Yeah, illustration they kind of looked like the
- 32:02Speaker 1: New York Times. I'm not the New York Times the
- 32:04Speaker 1: Wall Street Journal. When they draw the pictures like they
- 32:08Speaker 1: look like when somebody sits in front of you and
- 32:11Speaker 1: poses and stuff like, they're very they're very lifelike, almost
- 32:14Speaker 1: like yeah, kind of kind of like a portrait. Yeah. Absolutely, yes, so,
- 32:19Speaker 1: especially the one with Brendan Frasier on the for the
- 32:22Speaker 1: title of the book. You know what I mean with
- 32:24Speaker 1: the inside when you get to that moment and you
- 32:27Speaker 1: even say, at that moment, I didn't want to talk
- 32:28Speaker 1: about that, you know, I hate talking about this, and
- 32:31Speaker 1: Zach you before we get into the store, I wanted
- 32:33Speaker 1: to say this. Also it made also me watching the
- 32:37Speaker 1: episode again, it made it more impactful for me because one,
- 32:41Speaker 1: I knew how it was going to work out the
- 32:43Speaker 1: way you laid it out in the book. I knew
- 32:47Speaker 1: how it was gonna end up, not only because I
- 32:49Speaker 1: was in it, but because of that. But um, but
- 32:54Speaker 1: but it made it more impactful because what the way
- 32:57Speaker 1: you described all of what was happening, Uh, you really
- 33:02Speaker 1: told the story. Well that's my point. You know, that's
- 33:04Speaker 1: good writing. When you're like when when when you he's
- 33:07Speaker 1: he's he's writing his thoughts on something we were a
- 33:10Speaker 1: part of. And I never had this experience before. I mean,
- 33:13Speaker 1: I guess occasionally when someone writes a good review of
- 33:16Speaker 1: something you've done, maybe it's similar. But you're writing his
- 33:19Speaker 1: thoughts on this moment, and it made the moment for
- 33:22Speaker 1: me as a part of it more impactful. I thought
- 33:24Speaker 1: that was really And then even where and then even
- 33:26Speaker 1: where it stems from how you bring it back to
- 33:28Speaker 1: the episode where we lose you know, where one in
- 33:31Speaker 1: three patients die when they go into the hospital and
- 33:34Speaker 1: everything like that, how you connect the This is how
- 33:37Speaker 1: Scrubs fucks you up. They fuck you up by making
- 33:39Speaker 1: you think you know everything's all right, everything's all right,
- 33:42Speaker 1: everything's all right, and then just when you're feel like
- 33:45Speaker 1: you're out of the woods and you're safe, they drop
- 33:47Speaker 1: the fucking hammer on you. You know what I mean.
- 33:49Speaker 1: And by the way, this is how good Shay's writing is.
- 33:52Speaker 1: He preempted Brendan Frasier being on this podcast. So I
- 33:57Speaker 1: want you to know, Shay that we and I'm telling
- 34:00Speaker 1: anouncing to the fans right here and now that the
- 34:02Speaker 1: next episode will have Brendan Frasier on this podcast. That's perfect.
- 34:06Speaker 1: That's perfect. Um, so we want SHA's gonna come on
- 34:08Speaker 1: and we're gonna talk through Brendan Frasier's first episode. Then
- 34:13Speaker 1: in the next episode, we're gonna have Brendan Frasier come
- 34:15Speaker 1: on and uh and talk about it, and then UH
- 34:18Speaker 1: will eventually, I guess it's season three, we'll get to
- 34:21Speaker 1: uh to the big one. That's a lot of people's
- 34:23Speaker 1: favorite episode of all time. This also when Brendan spoiler
- 34:27Speaker 1: alert dies, This also is kind of a it's precursor
- 34:33Speaker 1: the right word to that episode. Like this whole episode
- 34:37Speaker 1: pretty much is a dream dude that I didn't even
- 34:39Speaker 1: remember that by the way, you know what I mean? Yeah,
- 34:42Speaker 1: a lot of foreshadowing, right, I I didn't remember that either.
- 34:47Speaker 1: And I've truly went on this journey with j D
- 34:50Speaker 1: through this whole episode of him trying to, you know,
- 34:54Speaker 1: rationalize why this Oh this is a false positive test.
- 34:58Speaker 1: This test isn't it's not to co They're fucking up
- 35:01Speaker 1: all day. Yeah. I even made a note, and I
- 35:03Speaker 1: even made a note, Wow, Sacred Heart is making a
- 35:05Speaker 1: lot of mistakes. Yeah. Yeah. And also, by the way,
- 35:09Speaker 1: first of all. I was so fucking uncomfortable with Judy
- 35:12Speaker 1: hitting on me, and I didn't remember that at all,
- 35:15Speaker 1: but because Donald's my best friend in the world, I
- 35:17Speaker 1: was nervous that his TV wife was hitting me. I
- 35:20Speaker 1: was like, I was like, my stomach was getting uncomfortable.
- 35:24Speaker 1: And then I noticed the very subtle thing. I don't
- 35:26Speaker 1: know if you guys noticed this, because I'm just very
- 35:27Speaker 1: aware of the cinematography. I don't know if it was
- 35:29Speaker 1: Larry Trilling who directed by We mentioned that Bill Lawrence
- 35:32Speaker 1: wrote this one and Larry Trilling, one of our favorite directors,
- 35:35Speaker 1: directed it. And there was this weird, sort of a
- 35:38Speaker 1: very subtle filter on the camera for that fantasy, that
- 35:42Speaker 1: long dream sequence, and I didn't remember that it was
- 35:46Speaker 1: a dream sequence. I remember, like, Jesus, why is this.
- 35:48Speaker 1: It's usually a filter you you would reserve for a
- 35:51Speaker 1: close up of a woman of a certain age. We
- 35:53Speaker 1: wanted to maybe soften her wrinkles a little bit, or
- 35:55Speaker 1: her eyes. But if you go back and look, it's
- 35:58Speaker 1: on that whole sequence. And I was kind of like,
- 36:00Speaker 1: why is why is this filter on? Like what? And
- 36:03Speaker 1: then I was like this does look weird on my computer,
- 36:05Speaker 1: Like what's going on? And then when it was revealed
- 36:07Speaker 1: that the whole thing is a is a fantasy, I
- 36:10Speaker 1: was like, Oh, that was like a little subtle thing.
- 36:12Speaker 1: You know a lot. There's lots of little subtle things either,
- 36:14Speaker 1: but that's one thing I noticed with the cinematography. It
- 36:16Speaker 1: makes you want to go back and watch it again.
- 36:20Speaker 1: It's a good show. A good show. Thank you, thank you.
- 36:23Speaker 1: What I'm telling you when you get Chase, When you
- 36:25Speaker 1: guys get Chase's book, you're gonna want to when you
- 36:28Speaker 1: read his essays, then you want to go back and go, Okay,
- 36:30Speaker 1: now I gotta rewatch that episode with this with this
- 36:33Speaker 1: essay in mine. All right, we're gonna go to break
- 36:35Speaker 1: and we'll be right back and her back back. All right,
- 36:46Speaker 1: we're gonna go into this episode. Guys, all right, I
- 36:49Speaker 1: got one thing to say when we start off, What
- 36:51Speaker 1: the fuck? How do why do we have like a
- 36:53Speaker 1: cheese plate with a meat cheese meat plate the size
- 36:56Speaker 1: of like when you go to a party at you
- 37:00Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like it's it's it's it's our
- 37:02Speaker 1: cheese and and and we and we got like the
- 37:06Speaker 1: Ramps version of cheese and meat. It's like it's only
- 37:10Speaker 1: cheddar it's only cheddar and American and white white cheddar,
- 37:14Speaker 1: yellow cheddar and American cheese. And then it's the worst cheese,
- 37:18Speaker 1: beef turkey. It's cold cuts rolled up and when drinking
- 37:27Speaker 1: wine with that, and this is our and this is
- 37:30Speaker 1: our night out from the hospital. Yeah, it's a big
- 37:33Speaker 1: fancy man and Judy Carla says she got a nice
- 37:36Speaker 1: bottle of wine. And then Donald's right, if you freeze
- 37:39Speaker 1: frame at five seconds on the plate we're talking about,
- 37:41Speaker 1: it's basically cubes of cheddar and rolled up cold cuts. Well,
- 37:49Speaker 1: maybe maybe the rationalization was that we didn't know we
- 37:52Speaker 1: were just we were like, we were so busy being doctors.
- 37:54Speaker 1: None of us are cooks, and we're like, oh, we're
- 37:55Speaker 1: gonna have like an adult night. That's what we do.
- 37:57Speaker 1: They have. So this is a good example of like
- 38:00Speaker 1: one of the one of the reasons I like to
- 38:02Speaker 1: rewatch the show so much, because every time you rewatch it,
- 38:04Speaker 1: you're gonna find like another little neat thinking there. So
- 38:07Speaker 1: I noticed that she's saying same same as y'all did
- 38:09Speaker 1: when I rewatched it yesterday, and I was like, the
- 38:12Speaker 1: only person in this room who is upset about the
- 38:15Speaker 1: situation or the setup is Carla, which makes sense because
- 38:20Speaker 1: she for that whole first season, second season's she's like
- 38:23Speaker 1: the adult in the room. Yeah, and the other and
- 38:25Speaker 1: and the other three are just sort of pretending to
- 38:27Speaker 1: be adults, so they think like this is what it's
- 38:30Speaker 1: supposed to look like. And probably probably probably Sha, probably
- 38:35Speaker 1: Turk and Uh and JD were probably tasked with getting
- 38:38Speaker 1: a nice tea yea, And we went to fucking the
- 38:42Speaker 1: supermarket where I got one of those brand route jobs. Meanwhile,
- 38:47Speaker 1: she went to the liquor store and bottom expensive bott
- 38:50Speaker 1: and then we still fucked it up for um, how about?
- 38:53Speaker 1: I mean, I feel bad um the talking like JD
- 38:56Speaker 1: knowing so much about what celebrities are naked and what movies,
- 39:00Speaker 1: but it was pretty funny when he's like frontal and
- 39:03Speaker 1: touch to they have something like that on the Playboy.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I mean, never mind, this is obviously before a website
- 39:13Speaker 1: like this existed, so it does come up in the episode,
- 39:15Speaker 1: but I don't think we should actively advertise them unless
- 39:18Speaker 1: you want to hear it. Let us know. Okay, hit up,
- 39:22Speaker 1: hit up Donald on his instagram, on me, hit me
- 39:24Speaker 1: up on my Instagram. Yeah, but you gotta find only
- 39:28Speaker 1: I'll only respond if you follow, but make sure you
- 39:31Speaker 1: follow him because he's very upset about his follower account.
- 39:33Speaker 1: But if you really, if you don't want to take
- 39:35Speaker 1: the time to google it, just that on Instagram, Shay,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you want some of this, man, we could we can
- 39:39Speaker 1: hijack we can hijack some of Zach's followers, man and
- 39:42Speaker 1: get them on on teams. He's blowing up, Shay, share
- 39:47Speaker 1: some of yours with me, brother, yea, all right, one
- 39:51Speaker 1: day one twelve, I was kind of taken, and I
- 39:53Speaker 1: think this comes up in your essays if I'm not mistaken.
- 39:57Speaker 1: But we finally see Cox like someone. Yeah, right, you know,
- 40:00Speaker 1: it seems that he seems to never like anybody or
- 40:04Speaker 1: at least be snarky with anyone and everyone. This is
- 40:07Speaker 1: this is sort of the first time that he's really uh,
- 40:11Speaker 1: we see how much he genuinely is no bullshit. Has
- 40:14Speaker 1: a friend, Yeah, that's really It's really like an interesting
- 40:17Speaker 1: creation of a character is to put somebody in in
- 40:20Speaker 1: his orbit who just sort of takes away all of
- 40:24Speaker 1: his like protective armor immediately, like he has another friend.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Later on the show, Michael Boatman's character Ron and when
- 40:30Speaker 1: he shows up and they're like clearly close friends. But
- 40:33Speaker 1: but at the same time they're like poking each other
- 40:34Speaker 1: in the eye every once in a while with something.
- 40:36Speaker 1: But Brendan Fraser's character Ben is the only time we
- 40:39Speaker 1: see him where he is just wide open and like
- 40:41Speaker 1: just having a good old time and he loves him. Yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 1: it's it's it's very It really mirrors JD. And it's
- 40:48Speaker 1: like his Turk in a way. Um, just solely in
- 40:51Speaker 1: the fact that like they're on you know, they're hugging,
- 40:53Speaker 1: and they're and they're joking about hugging and um, and
- 40:57Speaker 1: they're just very they're being playing silly games, the thing
- 41:00Speaker 1: with the card on their head, and they're just like
- 41:02Speaker 1: they're unabashedly themselves. Yeah, all of all of the things
- 41:06Speaker 1: that doctor Cox says annoys him about JD. Yeah, the
- 41:09Speaker 1: things that Brent like he talks in the voices, he's
- 41:11Speaker 1: very affectionate, and I'm seeing like like, oh, this is
- 41:14Speaker 1: like you begin to understand. This is like why he
- 41:18Speaker 1: has such a fondness for JD is because he reminds
- 41:20Speaker 1: him of this count. That's great, Ja, I really love
- 41:23Speaker 1: that analysis. And I didn't see it, um, but it's funny.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I was I was watching Brendan Frasier's choice in this
- 41:29Speaker 1: character for the first time in twenty years, and he
- 41:31Speaker 1: is playing it very goofy and silly, and it's very
- 41:34Speaker 1: JD like. And it's funny that you say that that
- 41:38Speaker 1: I never thought of it like that. It's like you're seeing,
- 41:41Speaker 1: even though Cox has to keep it down because he
- 41:44Speaker 1: like has to be Cox to JD, there is there
- 41:48Speaker 1: must be some aspect of JD that reminds him of
- 41:50Speaker 1: his good buddy. You know, there's no question about it.
- 41:52Speaker 1: There's no question. Um. I like when I got the
- 41:56Speaker 1: bar one twenty three, when I go neat hug. Yeah,
- 42:02Speaker 1: what hu. This is something that kind of bugging me
- 42:09Speaker 1: the whole time we made this show, but later on hindsight,
- 42:12Speaker 1: being twenty twenty nowadays, it's I I wish, I'm so
- 42:17Speaker 1: happy that this happened. But Brendan Fraser brings a camera
- 42:20Speaker 1: into the episode and it's a polaroid camera, the old
- 42:24Speaker 1: school Paroi, old school polaroid camera. And I'm not sure
- 42:28Speaker 1: if we were doing this before or if this is
- 42:31Speaker 1: where it started, but because of this moment right here,
- 42:35Speaker 1: it's like I have polaroids from you know what I mean? Okay,
- 42:41Speaker 1: let's let's let's get into it, because I I was
- 42:45Speaker 1: wondering we have all of these memories on celluloid because
- 42:50Speaker 1: because of someone bringing a camera, and then it became
- 42:55Speaker 1: this is this where it began. Yeah, So here's the thing.
- 42:57Speaker 1: Krista Miller and I are both photographers as our hobby,
- 43:00Speaker 1: and we both are camera geeks. We love new cameras,
- 43:03Speaker 1: we love old cameras, will like send each other eBay
- 43:05Speaker 1: listings of cameras. She's a really a talented photographer and
- 43:09Speaker 1: I like to think I'm not too bad myself. When
- 43:12Speaker 1: Brendan Frasier came in, this was his real hobby, shooting
- 43:16Speaker 1: with these old school polaroids. As you guys see in
- 43:18Speaker 1: the in the in the movie that the kind of
- 43:20Speaker 1: polaroid film, not that just comes out automatically. You pull
- 43:23Speaker 1: it out and then you got it's like shake it
- 43:24Speaker 1: like a polaroid picture of these you actually did have
- 43:26Speaker 1: to wait for a minute for them to cook, and
- 43:28Speaker 1: then you'd peel it off and there'd be a beautiful shot.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And this camera that he's shooting with was actually Brendan's
- 43:34Speaker 1: and he brought it in and of course and he
- 43:38Speaker 1: was taking pictures all the pictures you see at the
- 43:40Speaker 1: end of the episode in that tin that he has,
- 43:43Speaker 1: We're all shot by him over the course of his
- 43:45Speaker 1: week hanging out with us, and then Krista and I
- 43:49Speaker 1: of course got so into it. We're like, oh my god,
- 43:51Speaker 1: we gotta get one of those. Where do we buy him?
- 43:53Speaker 1: And then over the years, Donald that you have a
- 43:56Speaker 1: lot of Polaroid pictures, because I have a bunch of
- 43:59Speaker 1: these cameras now right, and I'm sure I'm sure Chris
- 44:02Speaker 1: has given you some too, because she does too, but
- 44:04Speaker 1: the bulk of the ones you have, I'm sure. I
- 44:06Speaker 1: got super into it, and I was going on eBay
- 44:08Speaker 1: and buying all these old cameras. That's why. That's that's
- 44:11Speaker 1: it all started with this, Okay, So all right, that's
- 44:13Speaker 1: what I was. That's what I was running because it
- 44:15Speaker 1: got ridiculous too at some point. At some point it
- 44:17Speaker 1: was like a battle between everybody who took pictures on
- 44:21Speaker 1: the fucking show to bring in their new toy, you
- 44:24Speaker 1: know what I mean, whether it was a lika or
- 44:26Speaker 1: a cannon, or a fucking or a point this is
- 44:29Speaker 1: the this is the rolls Royce of point and Shoot,
- 44:32Speaker 1: or how do you think I feel when you're talking
- 44:37Speaker 1: about your new animation gadget. But listen, I don't fucking sit.
- 44:41Speaker 1: I don't go to you, dude. Man, I just fucking
- 44:44Speaker 1: got a c stand. Man, I'm really excited. I don't
- 44:46Speaker 1: fucking hit you up and do that shit. No, but
- 44:48Speaker 1: on your Instagram you post shit like I'm doing on
- 44:50Speaker 1: this is on the ones and I just got this
- 44:52Speaker 1: new gadget called L two five nine. Do you think
- 44:57Speaker 1: I give a funk how your animating? Just show me
- 45:02Speaker 1: to show me to finished product. No, but he's right.
- 45:08Speaker 1: In addition to Kristen I, there's also a huge camera
- 45:11Speaker 1: department and and uh and with all sort you know,
- 45:13Speaker 1: everyone in the camera department loves cameras. So yeah, there
- 45:15Speaker 1: was a lot of camera talk on this. Sorry, I'm
- 45:17Speaker 1: sorry we annoyed you with that. It wasn't annoying. I
- 45:20Speaker 1: look back at it now and I'm so grateful for
- 45:22Speaker 1: it because I have all of these memories captured. Yes,
- 45:25Speaker 1: now I want to know why JD, who's we've established
- 45:27Speaker 1: as a very good doctor a'llbit young, is passing out
- 45:30Speaker 1: at a nail in someone's hand. I mean, hasn't he
- 45:32Speaker 1: seemed far right? Things? That ship is gross though, no
- 45:36Speaker 1: matter how you look at it, man, really, how you
- 45:39Speaker 1: for some reason, he's he's fucking cleaned out people's rectums. Yeah,
- 45:43Speaker 1: but when the ship's still in you, that's scary, man,
- 45:45Speaker 1: because it has to come out. And when it comes
- 45:48Speaker 1: Look you see in the movies, all right you ready, one, two, three,
- 45:52Speaker 1: and then they pull it in. The person's like that
- 45:58Speaker 1: was the first thing I thought about. It's like, they
- 46:00Speaker 1: gotta take that shit out. It didn't cross your It
- 46:02Speaker 1: didn't cross your mind. As I understand. Being a fake doctor,
- 46:06Speaker 1: you don't want to pull it out before you get
- 46:07Speaker 1: to the ear because then that's what the that thing
- 46:09Speaker 1: is stopping the blood from coming out. In some cases, yes,
- 46:13Speaker 1: in some cases take this as medical. Please google, Please
- 46:17Speaker 1: google the right thing to do it all because in
- 46:19Speaker 1: some movies when dude gets shot with the bow and
- 46:21Speaker 1: arrow or something like that, or or or or get
- 46:25Speaker 1: stabbed with a knife. Yeah, and they gotta make the escape.
- 46:28Speaker 1: You know, it's the icon. It's the close eye contact
- 46:31Speaker 1: and everything when they're looking face to face and they're like,
- 46:34Speaker 1: all right, you ready, I'm ready on three, one two,
- 46:41Speaker 1: you sit on three. That's true. Well, anyway, I thought
- 46:49Speaker 1: it was surprising that there's The episode begins with JD
- 46:52Speaker 1: passing out at a nail in someone's hand. He literally faints.
- 46:56Speaker 1: He literally faints like a like a person in old
- 46:59Speaker 1: movies faints right, like be still yeah, like like like
- 47:04Speaker 1: like yeah, backham hand the vapor. Now there's a real
- 47:10Speaker 1: thing in hospitals, you know, mix ups are. I mean
- 47:12Speaker 1: they've they've taken all these steps in the intervening years
- 47:15Speaker 1: between this show in twenty twenty to make sure that
- 47:20Speaker 1: fuck ups are very, very very rare. I just started
- 47:23Speaker 1: watching this show on Netflix. There's a documentary show if
- 47:27Speaker 1: you're into real doctor situations called Lennox Hill, where they're
- 47:29Speaker 1: following around real doctors and I just noticed that they
- 47:32Speaker 1: go into do brain surgery on someone and there's those
- 47:34Speaker 1: whole process where they're like they're like, we'll be doing
- 47:37Speaker 1: this on the right side of the brain. Does anyone
- 47:39Speaker 1: here right, raise your hand if you heard right? And
- 47:41Speaker 1: there's this whole system in place now where the nurses
- 47:44Speaker 1: are like I heard right, I heard right, I heard right,
- 47:46Speaker 1: and they're like sign he signs his name on the
- 47:48Speaker 1: woman's skull before the surgery. Like my point is everyone
- 47:52Speaker 1: in the medical community who listens to the show is
- 47:54Speaker 1: laughing at me because I'm explaining it so horribly. But
- 47:57Speaker 1: it made me think of that because there's so many
- 47:59Speaker 1: systems in place now to make sure fuck ups happen
- 48:01Speaker 1: less because it is a thing in hospitals. But it's
- 48:04Speaker 1: also really funny how they figure out the mess up?
- 48:06Speaker 1: What was happening? You know what I mean? Wait a second,
- 48:09Speaker 1: I imagine that this guy is Jewish, Yeah, of course
- 48:12Speaker 1: he is. Then why isn't his penis circumcised? And then
- 48:16Speaker 1: Todd runs in, Hey, doctor Wynne wants to know if
- 48:19Speaker 1: there's some sort of mix up because our appendix surgery
- 48:23Speaker 1: doesn't have an appendix. And then he walks into the
- 48:25Speaker 1: room and he's like, can you believe what the whoa
- 48:30Speaker 1: it's going on here? Let me laugh so hard by
- 48:34Speaker 1: the way, I laughed so hard at that, but I
- 48:37Speaker 1: didn't understand something. I mean, I laughed so hard at that.
- 48:39Speaker 1: But isn't it just an uncircumcised pen is? Why Tod whcised?
- 48:45Speaker 1: He's not freaked out by it, But what it is
- 48:48Speaker 1: is it's it's you know, the person's covered in a
- 48:51Speaker 1: complete uh a sheet, right, and it's covering their whole
- 48:55Speaker 1: body and the only thing sticking out and there's a
- 48:57Speaker 1: big light shining on it. Obviously is this dude's veetis
- 49:02Speaker 1: and his balls and his balls? Yeah, but why do
- 49:04Speaker 1: we Donald? If you, if you fans are listening, go back.
- 49:07Speaker 1: You can see when when Rob comes in and says, whoa,
- 49:10Speaker 1: what is going on here? You can see Donald under
- 49:13Speaker 1: his mask start to laugh and like, Donald, I can
- 49:16Speaker 1: see you biting your fucking cheeks. That ship was hilarious.
- 49:23Speaker 1: He's fucking dude. Man. I forgot how I say this
- 49:27Speaker 1: over and over again. Robert Machio, Holy shit, I forgot
- 49:33Speaker 1: how funny he is. Man. And we used to we
- 49:36Speaker 1: used to fucking fuck with him all the time and oh,
- 49:38Speaker 1: let's go run line and everything, but he fucking crushes
- 49:41Speaker 1: it every time. Every time, dude, that's the funniest line
- 49:45Speaker 1: on the show. WHOA, what is going on here? Going
- 49:48Speaker 1: on here? Even in my brain I was thinking, like, well,
- 49:51Speaker 1: why is he so surprised to see the fetis? But Donald? Oh? Man.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Then I looked at Donald and I know that look
- 49:57Speaker 1: better than anyone. You're lucky that he's like, he's like
- 50:02Speaker 1: his face. Nicole Sullivan's back, Christa Miller's back on this episode. Yeah,
- 50:13Speaker 1: Christ's back really Yeah, then Nicole Sullivan story you know,
- 50:18Speaker 1: uh sare you can speak on this also. This was
- 50:22Speaker 1: one of those things where you throw her in there
- 50:24Speaker 1: just so you can, just so the audience remembers, Okay,
- 50:28Speaker 1: there's this character, and we have plans for her later
- 50:32Speaker 1: on and to make this connection, to make to make
- 50:35Speaker 1: what happens to her, to make you feel it more.
- 50:37Speaker 1: We're gonna introduce her on some silly shit just so
- 50:40Speaker 1: you're comfortable, like, oh, this is just somebody who comes
- 50:43Speaker 1: into the space, into the universe for Elliott to make
- 50:47Speaker 1: funny jokes with and you kind of don't realize. Okay,
- 50:50Speaker 1: at the end of this something's bad's gonna happen, even
- 50:53Speaker 1: though we're laying out the crumbs, you know what I mean,
- 50:54Speaker 1: some something's you know. Yeah, she talks about that in
- 50:58Speaker 1: his book actually with with the Brendan arc of it
- 51:00Speaker 1: all about how Bill wasn't was was totally not afraid
- 51:04Speaker 1: to play the long game with these people, right Chay,
- 51:06Speaker 1: like like they laid the foundation from Brennan and then
- 51:08Speaker 1: that episode is having all two years later. Yeah, So
- 51:11Speaker 1: that's the like the one question I wanted to make
- 51:14Speaker 1: sure I asked, when I came on here, was when
- 51:16Speaker 1: you all are doing that stuff with with the with
- 51:19Speaker 1: the the Cole selling character, with or with the Brinnen
- 51:21Speaker 1: Fraser character. Do you know ahead of time, like okay,
- 51:24Speaker 1: in in fucking three years, is when we're gonna get
- 51:27Speaker 1: rid of No, you just sort of we should throw
- 51:30Speaker 1: it to Bill. Let's throw that. Yeah, well, well let's
- 51:32Speaker 1: let's throw the Brendan one to Bill, because that's I
- 51:34Speaker 1: was thinking about doing that as well, Bill, when you
- 51:38Speaker 1: had Brendon on in season one for these two awesome episodes.
- 51:42Speaker 1: We have Sha Serrano here and of course building those
- 51:44Speaker 1: who you are shake because he I see him hitting
- 51:47Speaker 1: you up on Twitter as well. Bill, was was it
- 51:50Speaker 1: your intention that you would kind of play the long
- 51:53Speaker 1: game and then bring Brendan back in season three for
- 51:56Speaker 1: the episode Everybody Loves at the Funeral? Was that on
- 51:59Speaker 1: your radar this far out? And because we're because you
- 52:02Speaker 1: know we're talking about also in the Cole Sullivan character,
- 52:05Speaker 1: and how one of the things you did really well
- 52:07Speaker 1: in Scrubs was not be afraid to play the long
- 52:09Speaker 1: game with these characters. But first, well Bill, please don't
- 52:12Speaker 1: don't don't hey, guys, I guess we'll just continue this
- 52:19Speaker 1: relationship in which you only reach out to me when
- 52:21Speaker 1: you need me. Uh, and I'm supposed to feel good
- 52:24Speaker 1: about that. Um, now I do feel good. Look Brendan, Um,
- 52:29Speaker 1: he's an old family friend, good friend of Christa's. And
- 52:33Speaker 1: when we brought him on, initially we thought, wow, that
- 52:38Speaker 1: was back when we kind of bring guest stars on
- 52:39Speaker 1: and get to know him and kill him. But we
- 52:41Speaker 1: thought it was kind of a good enough thing to
- 52:43Speaker 1: give him, uh leukemia and um, you know kind of
- 52:49Speaker 1: see doctor Cox rise to the occasion and deal with it.
- 52:51Speaker 1: The first episode is based on a short story called
- 52:54Speaker 1: Occurrence at al Creek Bridge by Ambrose Beers if anybody
- 52:57Speaker 1: wanted to look that up. Second episode to cool excuse
- 53:00Speaker 1: to use the worthless peons, Ted's band and all you guys.
- 53:05Speaker 1: And Brennan was so good when he agreed to come back. Uh,
- 53:09Speaker 1: it was perfect because we were able to do you
- 53:12Speaker 1: know that um sixth sense homage. So we always knew
- 53:16Speaker 1: we wanted to kill him, but we hadn't planned. Uh.
- 53:19Speaker 1: We had hoped, but hadn't planned for him to come back.
- 53:21Speaker 1: And when that happened, it's one of our favorite episodes ever.
- 53:24Speaker 1: All right, we were were we have a fan that
- 53:26Speaker 1: we're gonna take, we're commercial and then we come back.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Do we ever go to a fan and then go
- 53:31Speaker 1: to commercial after the fan? How come we always got
- 53:34Speaker 1: to go to commercial before the fan? Is this? Like?
- 53:36Speaker 1: Is it because and it's a sec it's a segment thing.
- 53:40Speaker 1: I got it, it's a segment thing. Yeah, I mean
- 53:42Speaker 1: there's when Joel we first started making the show, Joel
- 53:45Speaker 1: had a very organized list of the way the show
- 53:47Speaker 1: would go, right, and since all we do is ramble
- 53:50Speaker 1: all over the place, we just occasionally asked her if
- 53:52Speaker 1: we should go to commercial. I know, but it's always like, well,
- 53:55Speaker 1: it's always a tease though for the it's always a
- 53:58Speaker 1: tease for the people listening to the podcast. Oh we've
- 54:00Speaker 1: got a listener here, let's you know what, we should
- 54:02Speaker 1: probably go to fucking commercial. But I think that I
- 54:05Speaker 1: think that, you know, on real TV shows and radio shows,
- 54:08Speaker 1: you want it. You want the audience to stay on
- 54:10Speaker 1: the line, right on the right, on the fishing line.
- 54:12Speaker 1: You want to when we come back, we're gonna have
- 54:15Speaker 1: an exciting caller. But we don't do it that way.
- 54:17Speaker 1: We never do it that way. We always try it
- 54:19Speaker 1: that way. Let's try and sell it this way. You
- 54:20Speaker 1: want to try and sell it, like, pretend that they
- 54:22Speaker 1: might change the channel or switch to the No no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 54:25Speaker 1: no no. Don't you touch that doubt. When we come back.
- 54:28Speaker 1: We'll have that caller. Don't you touch that doubt. We're
- 54:30Speaker 1: back in two and two. Oh, hi, guys, guy, gentlemen,
- 54:44Speaker 1: it's Dylan and who else? This is Cam Dylan and Cam.
- 54:49Speaker 1: There's your official Oprah voice. Guys. That's the prize you
- 54:52Speaker 1: get for making it on the show. You get an
- 54:53Speaker 1: Oprah voice intro. Dylan and Cam, where are you guys at?
- 54:57Speaker 1: It looks like you're like in a bunker underground around
- 55:00Speaker 1: with Yeah, we have a little barrier in our basement.
- 55:04Speaker 1: We're kind of hunkered down that here, but we're in
- 55:06Speaker 1: a lacrosse with scot Okay, Wisconsin in the house. Nice. Well,
- 55:11Speaker 1: welcome guys to the show. We um. We we have
- 55:13Speaker 1: Shay Serano joining us, who's written an awesome book on
- 55:16Speaker 1: Scrubs and an incredible best selling author. And he probably
- 55:21Speaker 1: knows more about Scrubs than Donaland and I, but he
- 55:23Speaker 1: definitely you can. Well, that's because Donaland smokes a lot
- 55:26Speaker 1: of weed. But you can ask us any question or
- 55:28Speaker 1: maybe you're off. Are you off this hour? Down? Do
- 55:31Speaker 1: you mean did I smoke today? No? Because well there
- 55:33Speaker 1: was a couple of podcasts ago you said you were
- 55:35Speaker 1: taking a break from weed, and I wonder if that's stuck. No,
- 55:38Speaker 1: that night, didn't didn't take. Didn't take that night. That
- 55:44Speaker 1: night I went back to the well. Uh. He always
- 55:47Speaker 1: tries to brag Shay. He's like, yeah, I'm off weed.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I'm like for how long? He's like an hour. That's
- 55:52Speaker 1: how it starts. That's how it starts. One step at
- 55:54Speaker 1: a time, one step at a time. All right, Dylan
- 55:57Speaker 1: and Cam, what's up? What's your question? Guys? Welcome, Yeah,
- 56:00Speaker 1: get to be here. Man. Really big fans and really
- 56:03Speaker 1: huge fan of Shade too, So that's oh nice? Oh
- 56:07Speaker 1: yeah great, Yeah you guys have do you guys printed
- 56:13Speaker 1: it out for you for you listeners. They held up
- 56:17Speaker 1: Shay's book on the office and they had printed it
- 56:20Speaker 1: out and binded it. So these guys are real Shae fans.
- 56:22Speaker 1: Oh I love yeah, I love shit probably my favorite author. Yeah,
- 56:28Speaker 1: thank you, Oh wow, nice sham. All right, A question
- 56:32Speaker 1: for I guess it's probably gonna be for Shay, But
- 56:34Speaker 1: Donald and I are here too. Um So, I guess
- 56:38Speaker 1: if you guys gonna hosp in with this too. But
- 56:40Speaker 1: for Shay. Um So, you've written obviously, conference room five minutes,
- 56:44Speaker 1: for the Office, you've written where do you think we are?
- 56:47Speaker 1: For Scrubs? Um? Is there another show that you've been
- 56:49Speaker 1: thinking about her? Is there maybe one that maybe Donald
- 56:53Speaker 1: or Jack would really like to kind of see from
- 56:55Speaker 1: you as well? Oh? That's I like, I like my part,
- 56:57Speaker 1: but you go for a show? There hasn't been one
- 57:00Speaker 1: that I thought of yet. Usually whenever I'm working on
- 57:02Speaker 1: one of these, people will like start tweeting me, Oh,
- 57:04Speaker 1: do the Wire? Do Arrested Development? Do Sons of Anarchy
- 57:09Speaker 1: or Madman or whatever? But but mostly these things just
- 57:12Speaker 1: sort of happen organically. Like I've been I've been watching
- 57:15Speaker 1: Scrubs for so long. I've seen it so many times,
- 57:18Speaker 1: and it was like, well, you know, let me let
- 57:20Speaker 1: me do something with all of the times I've watched it.
- 57:23Speaker 1: And then it becomes like, oh, I was actually just
- 57:24Speaker 1: working hard all of that time instead of just sitting
- 57:27Speaker 1: around watching TV. You know what I'm saying, Yeah, that's
- 57:29Speaker 1: a nice way to spin it. You're like, You're like,
- 57:31Speaker 1: I wasn't wasting those hours. I was writing a book.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Yeah exactly. I mean it's like one hundred and eighty
- 57:36Speaker 1: something episodes of the show. You watch a point ninety
- 57:39Speaker 1: hours of TV that you've seen four or five times
- 57:42Speaker 1: all the way through. But yeah, usually just if a
- 57:46Speaker 1: show will grab a hold of me, then I don't
- 57:47Speaker 1: then I'll write about it. But I haven't. I don't
- 57:49Speaker 1: have any plans right now to do to do another one?
- 57:51Speaker 1: All right, I have a nice which one? Which one
- 57:53Speaker 1: do you want him to do? I was just well,
- 57:55Speaker 1: the whole time he was talking, I was half listening
- 57:57Speaker 1: and half thinking. I think, I think. I don't know
- 58:01Speaker 1: if you watch the show, Shay Donald, I don't think
- 58:03Speaker 1: watches it. But I really loved Atlanta. Oh, Atlanta is great,
- 58:07Speaker 1: and I think it's right for analysis because it's got
- 58:10Speaker 1: so many trippy storylines and so much social commentary, and
- 58:14Speaker 1: I just I just think it's incredibly done. Yeah, that's
- 58:17Speaker 1: a really that's a really good But they're not done yet.
- 58:20Speaker 1: It doesn't till they're done. Yeah, you gotta wait till
- 58:22Speaker 1: you get Now the Wire, A lot of people say
- 58:24Speaker 1: The Wire is I have to admit I only watched
- 58:27Speaker 1: season one, so please don't yell at me. But a
- 58:29Speaker 1: lot of people think that's the greatest TV show of
- 58:31Speaker 1: all time? Is that Is that on the top of
- 58:33Speaker 1: your list? Yeah, that's absolutely on there, the Wire, Breaking
- 58:36Speaker 1: Bad Soprano, like you know, all of the all of
- 58:38Speaker 1: the main ones, right, I've never seen any of these shows.
- 58:42Speaker 1: You haven't. No, you've never seen You've never seen Breaking Bad. No, no,
- 58:46Speaker 1: you only watch you only watch the finale, the only
- 58:49Speaker 1: episode you ever saw. So here's my thing. Here's my thing.
- 58:52Speaker 1: I have a hard time investing in shows because what
- 58:55Speaker 1: happens is either they get canceled or they disappoint you
- 58:58Speaker 1: in the end. Right, that's my that's my issue with things.
- 59:02Speaker 1: I hate when you know something, there's a cliffhanger at
- 59:04Speaker 1: the end of the season, and then the show gets
- 59:08Speaker 1: canceled and you don't get to finish, you know, and
- 59:11Speaker 1: then really, there's a series. What's a series that you
- 59:13Speaker 1: watched like that? You just loved all of it? The
- 59:16Speaker 1: Clone Wars, it's got to be Star Wars. It's only
- 59:20Speaker 1: Star Wars. Yeah that that that well, yeah, I I
- 59:25Speaker 1: you know, uh, that was anything non Star wars No No,
- 59:33Speaker 1: Like you know, Bill Lawrence used to say it all
- 59:35Speaker 1: the time, and it's so true. You you tell people
- 59:37Speaker 1: when you when people meet you and they say, I'm
- 59:41Speaker 1: such a huge fan of your show. Nine out of
- 59:43Speaker 1: the ten times, they've only seen it like a handful
- 59:45Speaker 1: of times, you know what I mean, and haven't seen
- 59:48Speaker 1: it more than that. Um, And so I fall in
- 59:53Speaker 1: that category. If I were to see Brian and Aaron,
- 59:58Speaker 1: I would be like, I'm such a hug. I was
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: such a huge fan of Breaking Bad. I only saw
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: the final episode. I would let you admit that I
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: already told them it's all over the air. Now that's
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: somebody's gonna come back to him and say that shit now.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: But you know what I mean, Like, like I watch
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: every now and then I'll check out a c W show, right,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Like I love superhero movies, right, so I'll check out
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: The Flash, or I'll check out Legends of Tomorrow, or
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I'll check out you know, uh arrow U. And I've
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: only seen, like you know, out of all of them,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I've seen maybe you know, thirty of them total, like
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: of all of the show's total. But when I see
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the actors and stuff in it, I genuinely do love
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: what I have seen, so I'll be like, I'm such
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: a fan of your show, even though I've only seen
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: each show. So the message for all those actors is
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: that Donald is totally bullshitting you. I'm telling the honest
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: to goodness truth. I like Supergirl, I have seen that
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: a few times. You like it? What about Small About?
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: I only saw that show a couple of times also,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: And I'd like, you know, because Angel, which one was
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: Dark Angel? This one with Jessica Alba. I didn't watch
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: that one. I didn't watch. I never you also used
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: didn't you used to watch? There was a sci fi
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: show you Battlestar Galactica. I take it back, if you
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: do Battlestar, Yeah, you should do Battlestar Galactic Yeah, there
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: we go. Thank you, Zach. Thanks. I remember, I remember
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I got I was searching my brain for you. I
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: was like, I know there was one sci fi show
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: you actually watched. There wasn't a fucking Star Wars animated cartoon. Yeah.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I remember. I got into an argument with my girlfriend
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: at the time because I thought she uh taped over
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: my Battlestar Galactica episode. I remember, um, did you watch that? One, Shay,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I did not watch Battlestar you guys, Dylan Cam did
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: you watch batle Stalactica? Yeah? Yeah, do you lie like it? Yeah?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I'm not super big and like sci fi. By that one,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: I was pretty I think as far as like sci
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: fi shows that people have liked, that's one of those ones.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Everyone says it was canceled too soon, and people Katie
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: saf Is she's a g if you ask me, you
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: know what I mean. Like, she's one of those action
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: heroes that is a good Like she's straight up as
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: a true action star who deserves the opportunity to carry
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: some project. They say she's going to be in the
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Mandalorian this upcoming season as uh Bokatan, which would be
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: really fucking dope. My grandmother used to live in Boca Raton, right, Well,
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: these characters, these these characters all travel from does it
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: take place at an old Jewish community center and Flora
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: can eat and as Joel, do you watch battle Started
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: Galactica because you like the sci fi stuff? Yeah? I
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: came very very late to Battlestar Galacticus. I'm currently in
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: the middle of season one but really loving it. It's amazing.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: It's excellent's good writing. If you're a Star Trek and
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: or Star Wars fan, you'll probably find something like in
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Battlestar Galactica. All right, Um, so guys, um, to finish
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: that question off, do you have a show that that
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: like you would love Shay to one day do a
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: book about each We're gonna ask both of you each. Yeah, okay,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: I would love Breaking Bad personally. Breaking That would be
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: really sick. I think it's a really really good show. Um. Yeah,
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: that would probably be my top two. Like many parts
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: and Rap would kind of be a more fun one.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: I'm more lighthearted, but I would probably say Breaking That
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: would be a really cool one. All Right, how about you, Um,
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: I've always been a huge fan of the show dexter Um,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: I would love to see you do that in my
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: opinion at Born in the best show start and then
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: kind of drop co operating to finish where I think
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Breaking Bad better in the series where I think that's
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: best Sexter is better. Yeah, I think I think that's
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: that's my kind of fall in line with Donald's of
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: kind of a slight disaployment at the very head. But yeah,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I was gonna say that's one that's another show where
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: I only watched the last episode and I was like,
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: what the fuck is this? Strang that's bullshit? Say when
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Harry Matzally, that's a totally different example. Do you remember
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: when Billy Crystal when she's asking when when she when
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: he tells her how how dark he is, and he's like,
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: I read the end of the book before I start.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: That's me with movies. That's me with television shows that
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: everybody's trained. But that's me with television shows that everybody's like,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: you should watch this, you know what show you would like,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: You would like this show, but you miss you missed
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: like the whole build up of everything, like you can't. Okay,
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: we're talking about Nicole Sullivan character. Yeah, yes, and the
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: and in the season eight finale when Jade is doing
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: the walk down the hallway and she pops up out
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: of the out of the thing and she's like, there
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: you are and you can it's so fucking excited, Like
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: there's like a real jolt of joy in your body
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: when you see that. If you haven't watched all the
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: other episodes, you don't understand what that. You think this
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: is just a person who happens to be other how
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: do you can't just watch? So then that is the
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: final episode of Scrubs. A good episode. It's a great,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: fantastic because the Breaking Bad. For the Breaking Bad finale,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: it's a fucking movie. All I needed to know was
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: that this dude, Walter White, was this freak. Why because
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: you you you will get So I mean, let's just
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: take Breaking Bad because I feel like it's a show
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: that everyone listening to this problem that last that last right,
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: But that last episode is a movie. It's a fucking movie.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: It's a movie, like like it's just like the twenty
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: sixth hour with Edward Norton where he finally where he's
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: a board twenty I forget the name of a dann movie,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: but I forget how many hours. There was a lot.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: There's a lot of them. But he fucking uh yeah,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: he's a drug dealer who goes to jail. You don't
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: need to know everything that goes on before the movie.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: With the movie starts, you're invested the minute he gets
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: caught out there after you know what I mean, And
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: it is going to jail and it's the end of
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: the story. It's but you can watch that movie and
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: understand all of the parts by the time you get
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: to the end of it. If you only watch the
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: finale of Breaking Bad like you, kind of you don't
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: understand why it's so important that he saves Jesse in
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: that moment. You're like, I don't get it. Why did
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: he save this one kid and kill everybody else. I
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: don't understand why he had to walk through the meth
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: lab the last time. I don't understand why they played
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: this particular song. Like you, you're missing so much of
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: this thing. You gotta watch the rest of the episode.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: You gotta watch it, all right. Wait, let's let's ask
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the guys if they have another question. Go ahead, guys,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: do you have another one? So you guys have mentioned
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: earlier in the podcast series that you guys used to
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: be roommates, right, Yes, we were roommates for a year,
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: I mean for our half for summer, for summer, summer,
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: for a summer. So maybe I'm trying to stir in
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: the pod a little bit here, But what we've got
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: from your biggest pet peeves living with each other. So
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I got to the loft first. We rented this loft
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: for the summer, and the loft it was enormous. It
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: was like your dream loft in terms of size, but
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: it didn't wasn't really that set up in terms of
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: like two nice bedrooms, two nice bathrooms. So I claimed
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: the nice bedroom because you know I got there first, right,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: that's what you do. Right. Then I gave Donald what
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: was technically the second bedroom, but it had a washroom
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: and dryer in it, and he goes, who do you
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: think I am? Benson? And for you guys are young,
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: you don't know if but Benson was a show where
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: how do you play Benson? Benson was a show. Robert
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Guillon and played Benson, and he was he worked for
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: the mayor. He was an assistant to the mayor. He
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: was saying pretty much like who do you think I
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: worked for? And Benson was the one that pretty much
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: ran the country while because the mayor was this you know,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: uh bumbling Uh. Well he wasn't a bumbling mayor, but
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: he was. Benson was the one that handled everything right,
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: He handled the house, he handled everything. Uh. And for
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: some reason, uh, to me, that ship was kind of
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: fucked up that you can never like, Benson should be
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: the mayor. Benson should have been the mayor, and the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: mayor should not have been the mayor. But that's not
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: why I was pissed up. I was pissed up because
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: it was like, yea, you're gonna put me in the
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: fucking room with the washer and dryer of all the room. Look,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: it was either that or like a law. It was
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: like a there was a cot right outside of his
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: room and I was not the cot. Take the fucking cot. Yeah,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: and then I didn't really have a door. So we
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: we we were very open with each other that summer.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: We were very very open with We touched tips. No, no, no,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: we didn't do we did dock? Did we do? And
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: we never docks? We never docked. That was the middle
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: of a dream. This is all gonna get, This is
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: all boy. Now we're not cutting this out. Listen. This
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: is what always happens on the show. We say something
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: like that and then Dolly goes, we're cutting this out,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: and then we almost never cut it out. We used
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: to play ping pong in our in our box and
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: our underwear do. We had a lot of great times.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I remember the writer Amy Tan. Is that a famous
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: writer Joel Okay? As I understand it, the writer Amy
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: Tan lived beneath us and she was not happy that
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: two guys partying all summer were in the loft above her. Yeah,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and we would get a note like, we would get
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: notes like Amy Tan is furious, you guys need a
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: fucking quiet down. She was like, she would write notes like,
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: do you guys have fucking elephants upstairs? Yeah? Because the banging.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I can only imagine. She would write some pretty unique
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: notes though she was well, she was a good writer.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: She they were beautifully written. She wrote the joy Luck Club.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: Holy shit, we were fucking with the lady who wrote
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: the joy Luck We weren't funny with her. We were
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: just having fun. And I remember her very well worded
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: angry letters. Yeah, I wish you still had them. Yeah,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: she pulled out the thesaurus for some of those. I know,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: we could probably sell them on eBay. Those are worth something.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Amy Tan's angry letter Donald, all right, we gotta keep going.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Thank you guys for coming on, Donald, thank you, Hey,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: thank you guys. Did what is that on your hurts?
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: The summer league? Yeah, Vegas summer league. So Sha probably
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: knows about summer league. Yeah, and yeah basketball. Thank you
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: probably don't know too much about Donald, does Donald? Are you? No? Yeah,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: we're big Bucks, then Bucks plans and okay, right on,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: how long do you think you can hold at Tokompo
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: there for he's resigning? Yeah he heard it. Yeah you
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: believe he's not coming to stand in your show. I mean, look,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: here's the thing. Do they come out of the I
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: mean there is no East this year or West for
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: the for this bubble round that they're talking about at Disney, right,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: it's just a bunch of teams thrown into a pot. No,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: I think I think they are still doing the East West.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: It's something weird. It's kind of weird how they have
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: set up. But it would be nice if they just
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: threw teams into a pot so you can get you know,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: first rounds with like Houston verse Milwaukee or Houston verse
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: you know Washington. That'd be really cool. But what's his
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: name again? I want to try and use it to kumpopo? Yes,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: a story. Well, I gotta tell you he's a really
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: great player. And what I like about him is he's
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: always in the paint. That's actually true. Actually, he reminds
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: me of Rodman because he's always getting those rebounds. Wow. Again,
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: not bad, not bad, not bad. Kind of a quick
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: little shared story. We uh um. I think back to
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: the episode where I don't think it was the standards.
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: It's like a flashback to where you guys got to
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: go see Michael Jordan. Yeah, and when we were in
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: high school. I want to take it to Bucks Lakers
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: game and shout out and I rest in peace Kobe Bryant.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: But we have to go see Kobe Bryant playing. Yeah,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: we wrote rolled up that we're doing. Don't see Kobe
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Bryant and I take it. Take it Unlike unlike Jade
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: and Turk. You guys remember the tickets. I take it right? Yeah?
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Is it? That? Is that like in Scrubs? Lord Donald?
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: Is that how you began to lose your hair? You
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: first started pulling it out. I don't know how I
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: began to lose I don't know how Turk started to
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: lose his hair, but that was the first moment. First,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: that's one of the first moments. All right, guys, thank
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: you so much for coming out. I really appreciate it.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: Appreciate Hey, do you ever in Wisconsin come play tennis
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: of the Zack for tennis coaches too? Oh? Really? Oh
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: right on? Whatever is I love it? I love it.
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: I'll find you guys. All right, guys, you know, I
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: appreciate that they knew how to tap into the one
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: sport that I could talk about, and there they were.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: They were very good guests, like MASSI is back Insode, Yeah,
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: which is great. He went on to become a time
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: traveling hero. That was another show I watched, Shay Heroes.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: I watched that all the way through. Yeah. Yeah, by
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: the way, a couple of goose I had goosebumps multiple
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: times in this episode. The first was nine fifty six
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: when they're playing cool in the bar and Ben's hand
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: is still bleeding and the look Cox gives to JD.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: It really moved me because for an inspitement because I
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: was reading your essays and now was all emotional, Shay,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: but I went My first reaction was Cox can't hide
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: the fact that he respects JD as a doctor, to
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: know that he'll know what that could mean. Yeah, immediately,
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: do you know what I mean? It was like, you know,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Cox is always fronting like, oh your girl's name and
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: JD you sucking, but obviously under undercurrent trying to build
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: him up. But that was a moment of shock where
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: he looked to it as a peer as a peer
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: and when you know what that could mean, Yeah, that's
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: like it. So you see you see him do it
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: in the in the pilot, it was like the first
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: time he expressed some sort of like not admiration, but
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: like you know, I'm gonna grab a hold of you
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: and take it, take care of you. And then this
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: time was the first time when he doesn't say anything.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: There's no words at all. He just looks and he knows,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: and JD knows, and the only person who doesn't know
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: in that moment as Ben. Yeh, He's like, oh, it's
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: about it. I was really stuck by the respect that
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: he should I mean, but obviously in his mind wasn't
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna now respect this person. It was just it didn't.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: He didn't have a moment to put on his airs
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: if you will. He didn't have a moment to put
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: on his front. He just had an instant reaction to
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: a fellow doctor and went, oh, fuck, you know what
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: this could mean. It's totally it's it's totally different than
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: when you see him at the very beginning of the
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: next episode when he walks into the room and JD
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: and and Jordan and Ben are in there, and Jad's
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: doing the thing about like we knew, you know you
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: you don't need a we don't need a resident, we
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: need like a hero. And then he comes walking in
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: and now now he's prepared for the situation and doing
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: the whole thing. But yeah, you're exactly right in that
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: moment and then um and the second time. First of all,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: I just want to say at ten or five, there
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: was a really cool transition moment that Larry Trilling did
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: from I love how they went from the bar right
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: to the exam room. That was cool. Before we before,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: before we move forward with that, you know, he says,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: I've never asked you out for a beer before, but
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: he had asked you out for a beer before, and
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: that was when he lost his shit and tore up
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: the lab that day, U and he was having his
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: worst day and you got caught up in it. He
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: does invite you out for a beer. You guys go
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: to a bar and you drink beer and you drink together.
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: Actually so right. That was very weird that he was like,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: you know, I've never asked you out. Maybe he blocked
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: it out. Whatever. I'm just you know, you're just trying
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: to show off that you're like Scrubs Wiki guy ought
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: to me a lot of laughter on on my Insta
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: comments about Scrubs WICKI guy. They were like someone was
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: like that guy pulled a total Dorian uh um, and
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: that people were just laughing about how but no, friends, Trevor,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: we we we we got you. Now you're gonna be
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: our Scrubs wiki guy, right, Donald, I mean he doesn't
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: necessarily want him. No, but I kind of like that
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: about his character. No, but I kind of like that
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: about his character in the show. He's like a reluctant.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: He like a reluctant. He's reluctant. So, yeah, that's what
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: you do. Think of it as like the hero's journey.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: In the beginning, you don't really want to do it. Yeah,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: once you get on board, you're off to a adventure,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: that adventure of a lifetime. Yeah, Trevor, by the time
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: we do one hundred and eighty two episodes, you'll be
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: happy that you came along on the journey. And the
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: other moment and the other moment we got goose bumps.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: As I said earlier, Um, that's that that Sha writes
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: about it in his essay was when j D reads
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: the chart and sees that Ben has leukemia, and Carla
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: comes up and she says, are you okay? And I
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: just say no. And it was just really, really powerful
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: because it was one of those moments that she's talking
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: about where there had just been a silly moment of
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: the fantasy of what happens in that in that blood
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: test guy's office, and and and and and Doug being
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: you know Doug, and then all of a sudden, bam,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: we just drop in with, Hey, this guy we just
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: made you fall in love with he's got leukemia. She's
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: so good and like every single moment, like she has
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: this like like her player efficiency rating has gotta be
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: fucking outrageous, yeah, which looks like you know what I'm saying. Yeah,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: she's if you were playing, if you were playing uh
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: NBA two K, she's like ninety six ninety seven. She
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: was just straight up like she's a glitch mode man.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Judy three rushed at that time. Yeah. I think that
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: she is incredible actress and in the show she was
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: the perfect tool to use for moments like this because
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: she was the heart, you know, she was the heart
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: of She was the conscience and the heart for everybody
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: at least the first two seasons. I think as the
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: show went on, she you know, she became as much
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: of a uh character as we you know, as all
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: of us did. But in the first two seasons she
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: was definitely the grounding factor to all of you know
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: what I mean, to everything. So then we go into
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: this fantasy that we don't know as a fantasy delivery
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: end of the show. Um and all of this happens
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: in Jady's imagination, which which again we talked about it
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: early in this podcast, but you know that totally foreshadows
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: the giant mislead we do in season three with with
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Johnny not knowing that that that Ben's gone. So it's
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: just really interesting that that bill not only introduced Ben
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: for for the long haul, but then mirrored that sort
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: of whack fantasy structure. So when when when you reached
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: out and asked which episode I wanted to be on,
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: like if I could, if I wanted to be on
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: the thing that that was the whole reason that I
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: ended up picking this one because I think this episode
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: in season one especially is like the one episode where
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: we see the most amount of tricks that Scrubs is
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: able to pull off that maybe a lot of shows
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: aren't so, so if we have if we put a
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: list together, you have that great scene where where Elliott
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: makes yourself cry to get the toe to redo the
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: thing right. So this is like her being very silly
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: in this situation. But to do that as an actor,
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: I imagine, is incredibly tricky, just like pull that out
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: of you. So you have her doing that. You have
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Carlo with JD in the hallway and Carlo's doing her
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: quick missile strike right here where she's just like gonna
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: pump a scene full of emotion. You have the thing
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: where they're playing with timelines, which they used to even
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: greater effect later on. You have the gag with we
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: we find and out the janitor is in like the
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: background of all of these pictures that there's so much
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: we have. We have doctor Cox using his serious voice.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: He didn't do it very often, but when he does it,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: you feel it, and he gives He tells JD like
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: your only job today as he gets these test results back,
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: like you'd love to see him drop everything to do that.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: You have Turt sticking up for JD. You have Brendan
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Fraser swooping in and being just like the perfect cameo
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: character where you you have to be able to tell
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: a joke, but you also have to be able to
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: stick this landing. Yeah, there's just so much stuff going on.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: This one episode's perfect. By the way, Sha, you just
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: made me think of something else, which was Sarah's a
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: bit which he really did live on camera obviously, which
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: which actors often have to do and can't always do,
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: but Sarah does literally live on camera. Here is get
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: themselves in a headspace where they can produce tears, and
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: that momentum really encapsulates exactly what you're talking about in Scrubs,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: being able to dance between comedy and drama. Because what
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: Sarah's doing is very funny, but if you look at
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: the words she's saying to get herself to cry, it's
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: very serious and it's the painful stuff from her life
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: and trying to impress her father and whatever whatever she
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: was saying. But it was like happening simultaneously, is this
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: thing you're laughing at, But what the woman is saying
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: is is so Sash, do you know what I mean?
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: And then it ends with her with tears streaming down
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: her face. If it was a really great acting woman
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: for Sarah, she's amazing. Um what about Chop Chop Nancy
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: Rappido Rap? I remember that, dude, I remember that day.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: I remember. I think that's one of the first times
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: where I was having a hard time with lines. I
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: remember Chop Chop Nancy. No. I had the whole thing
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: where I was like, you're gonna go back there and
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: you're gonna do this and blah blah blah. I think
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: that was one of the first times where I was like,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: I didn't study this. Oh shit. Leonard makes an appearance
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Hire without a hook arm, though without a hook on
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: his head. So what is the story? I read on
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: scrubs Wiki that the guy wrote perhaps this episode is
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: before his ice machine accident. I think it is. I didn't.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: I didn't remember that that Leonard had lost his arm
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: in an ice machine accident. Did you? I did not either,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: But I love that. I love that on scrubs Wiki,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: it's like this may have occurred before, but I have
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: to because he had a hand. So for those of
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: you who don't remember, that's Randall Winston, our line producer
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: who not only played Death but also played Leonard. This
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: is his first appearance in his wig Um and the
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Afrow wasn't that big yet either. It's like he was
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: he was keeping his tighter right, but he does he
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: does not yet have a hook hand. This might be
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: I believe the only appearance of Leonard without his hook
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: can so the ice machine. But then again, sorry, I'm
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: going all over the place. But this was a fantasy.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: So maybe in Jad's weird daydream, Leonard didn't have yet.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: He didn't recognize Leonard had a hook yet he had.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: I hadn't noticed that Leonard had a hook yet, so
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: when I had a fantasy, that seems like something you
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: would notice, though, I just want to I've probably noticed that. Um.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: So it took me a moment because I've forgotten well,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I wanted to just mention in eighteen thirty six, again,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Brennan took all those pictures, and they're pretty great pictures.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I believe CHRISTI still saved the bunch of them, um
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: and um. And then j D. Yeah. So then I
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: was kind of surprised by that reveal. You know, again,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: I've watched Theason twenty years. I thought it was cool
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: to see this, you know. And and Bill was smart
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: directorially and writing wise. You needed something very specific to
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: make the audience go, this is the exact same moment.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: You need a device because the audience is gonnasentarily track it.
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: Keep in mind, when people watching these they had commercial
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: breaks in and everything, so that you need the audience
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: to make sure they tracked that whole run. And he
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: came up with the device of the exact playing cards
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: on their foreheads. Right. But here's the thing. He also
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: made it seem like it was a curveball. That's you know,
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: not only did it curve, but the ship was a
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: change up too, you know what I mean, Like, because
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: you don't think that the whole thing is a day dream.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: You think, just when he gets the paper the second
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: time and he meets U Brendan Frasier outside, Yeah, you
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: think that's all the fans, that's just the fantasy. I'm
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: gonna go out there and hey man, it's just leukemia.
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: It's not leukemia. You're You're fine, And I was wrong.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: I was wrong, and you know, the circle comes around
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: and it's got this weird Yeah, you think, okay, so
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: this parts the fantasy. And I expected you to be
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: at the door of the exit telling him, no, dude,
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: here's what I think you need. You need to come
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: back inside. Actually, and it doesn't even do that. It
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: jumps all the way back to the moment. And so
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: it was like it was like a not It wasn't
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: just one pump fake. It was like he was under
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: the rim giving you the dream shake, you know what
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: I mean? And then you know what I mean? You
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: know it is funny about that fantasy. You know, it's
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: the writing is such that it's supposed to be. Oh,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Ben says he doesn't like posed pictures. You'll know it's
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: a fantasy because here we are taking a post picture.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: But what what tipped it off even more for me
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: was that Kelso's happily getting in a picture with everyone.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I was like, Kelso would never want to do with these. Yeah,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: I think that's it, guys. I think we did the
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: whole We did the whole episode. Yeah we did. Chay,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: did you have fun? Are you glad you did this?
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: I'm really glad. This was like a you know, part
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: of me is like, these are two guys who I
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: have been watching for so long. I'm kind of nervous
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: to me and I don't really like to meet the
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: people who I admire because what if it turns out
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: there dicks so I had that in my head. But no,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: y'are cool. Hold hope you're you're better than I was.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: You come back on? Yeah? Will you come back on? Yeah,
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: I'll come back on later on after I'll do all
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: of the other stuff for sure, because I have a
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: feeling what's going to happen on all of our social
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: media is everyone's gonna say Shay was the best. Guess
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: you need to have Shay back all the time. Carol
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: Melbart definitely hashteck. Yeah, whatever happened, we don't know. He
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: freaking we went into the party and he got he
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: got jumped to something like that. Yeah, he definitely died
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: on the show. In real life, he's still working. But
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: on this show. You know he has a twin brother, right,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: yea identical Yeah. And I remember one night we were
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: out and his twin brother. Everybody thought his twin brother
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: was him, and they were coming up to him going
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: pedro pedro, and as I recall, the twin brother was
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: rolling with it, rolling with it, loving it, and he
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: was like, don't tell anybody. I was like, I'm not
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: gonna say shit, dude, I thought that I thought you
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: were the other one. Oh. I had people telling me
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: that I'm always say that's funny, like Manny Moore's character
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: does on the show, and then I need to stop
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: saying that. Donald I had someone write that to me.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: You guys did date Maybe that rubbed off on you.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Well I don't know if that's the case, but all right, guys,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: I want to get out. I want to know you
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: can leave it. Listen Shay's handle on Twitter at Shay
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: Serrano s h e A s E R R A
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: n O follow him on there. He is one of
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: the most popular fellows on Twitter. He does a lot
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: of amazing I just talk for a second, shape before
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: we go about this cool thing you do with the
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: fo h army, tell people what that is. Shay will
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: have like drives for people that need help. He'll be like,
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: all right, who's whose bills are we paying this week?
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: And then he'll like just then mow them cash. So
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: just talk about that for a second. Yeah, that's like
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: the silly little sort of gorilla philanthropy thing we started
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, or it was like after
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: we had enough people following me on Twitter, or we
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: were all grouped up together. If we got got one hundred,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: two hundred three hundred thousand people following we could raise
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: a lot of money real fast if everybody sends like
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: a dollar or two dollars or whatever. And so you know,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: we started doing that and then yeah, when the coronavirus
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: stuff hit, when the Black Lives Matter movement started up
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: after the George Floyd to murder, and we're like, you know,
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: we're gonna try to help out in order any situation
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: we can. So like people will send stuff to me
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: and we're like, all right, cool, we're gonna fund this.
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: We're gonna send some money out. So yeah, I think
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: like since March twelve, it's been you know, two hundred
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: and fifty two hundred and forty thousand dollars of just
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: like straight cash. We've given two places of people. And
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: do people give you I think just from following you
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: to some people who can afford it, give you like
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: large sums and hey, say hey, Shay, distribute this. Every
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: once in a while somebody will hit me up, like
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: at my DMS and be like, hey, I don't want you.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: That's like say where this came from, but like here's
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: five thousand dollars. Can you pay bills for people? Until
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: this has gone like that happens every once in a while.
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: Mostly though, it's like we're all gonna chip in five bucks,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: ten bucks and see what happens. That's really awesome, man,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: that's really awesome. And he's so sweet about it. People
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: will write him things like, oh, thank you so much,
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: say I'm having trouble with my bills, and he's like,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: fuck that noise, and he'll send them back money. It's awesome, awesome. Um,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: all right, everybody, that's the episode I want to thank,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: We want to thank on behalf of my co host
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: and I because say, you're an awesome guest, right Donald,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: amazing guests. Well, dude, this was this was you know,
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: uh always you never know how your guests are gonna be.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: And you're somebody who wasn't on the show. Uh, but
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: you fit in so well man. And your insight on
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: our show. I'm dead serious, man, your insight on our
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: show is is very awesome. Man, Like I I appreciate. Yeah,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: and since and since the old Caramel Bear died, I

- 1:31:54Speaker 1: I'll show up. All right, We'll wait, hold on, now come.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: I heard something about Tim Duncan and that being your
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: favorite player of all times. Jeffs absolutely absolutely Why why
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Tim Duncan? Why before we go? Why this doesn't even
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: have to be on the podcast act. I just need
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: to know this because Tim is one of my favorite
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: players too. He's not my favorite player. Why Tim Duncan? Okay,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: let me tell you that there's a very personal connection
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: that Tim Duncan has with San Antonio and that he
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: showed up and all of a sudden a city that
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: had an inferiority complex, you know, we're not as as
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: hip as Austin, We're not as cool as as as
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: Houston or whatever. They beat us in the playoffs. Blah
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: blah blah. He shows up and all of a sudden,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: we have the guy on our team that everybody's afraid of,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: and he's going to war and he's not backing down.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: You gotta fucking kill this guy in the playoffs if
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: you want to beat him. He shows up, he delivers
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: five championships for us. All of a sudden, we have
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: that we I think he's the fifth or sixth greatest
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: basketball player of all time. We have him on our team.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: He allows you in your chest to feel like a winner,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: to feel like a Champian, you know how I fee
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: when the team that you love wins a thing and
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: you feel like you're a part of it. It's like
