- 0:15Speaker 1: Hey everybody, and uh welcome to Pastor's perspective on this
- 0:21Speaker 1: Tuesday afternoon. Uh, this is not Brian Perez because Brian
- 0:25Speaker 1: Perez just bolted out the door and said, I'll be
- 0:30Speaker 1: right back. So,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Uh, he was planning to get back quicker than he
- 0:34Speaker 1: actually did, but he did just step back in the room.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So I am going to allow him to take the wheel,
- 0:42Speaker 1: you're from here. But yes, it's been good to just
- 0:46Speaker 1: say hi to everybody. And I, I do want to
- 0:49Speaker 1: mention that Phil Metzger is right here with us through
- 0:54Speaker 1: modern technology and Zoom or Teams or something like that.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And we're just.
- 1:01Speaker 2: No,
- 1:02Speaker 1: we're, we're gonna have, we're gonna have a fun day, right?
- 1:05Speaker 1: We are,
- 1:05Speaker 2: yeah, for a whole hour.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Why did you leave?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Because I forgot my Facebook question, you know, the questions
- 1:11Speaker 2: that people submit online, which is an option. They can
- 1:14Speaker 2: go to Facebook Messenger and or DM us on
- 1:17Speaker 2: Instagram.
- 1:18Speaker 1: To know though that you have such a, a great
- 1:21Speaker 1: teammate that you can just say yes I'm a great backup. Yes,
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm
- 1:24Speaker 2: out
- 1:24Speaker 2: on a moment's notice. I could have just left for
- 1:27Speaker 2: the day and just, OK, Brian, Brian's where would you
- 1:29Speaker 2: be without Brian right now? Where would you be without
- 1:32Speaker 1: without? Hey, we are the Brian's, you know, it's kind
- 1:34Speaker 1: of a, you know.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It's a two in one
- 1:37Speaker 1: thing.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I like it. So what's the phone number, Brian Broderson,
- 1:42Speaker 2: without looking at
- 1:42Speaker 2: the wall?
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yes, 888-564-6173. I mean, you know, Ed always used to
- 1:48Speaker 1: brag like he could, you know, like he knew that,
- 1:51Speaker 1: but he was always looking at the wall. And then
- 1:53Speaker 1: when he wasn't in the studio, you, you asked him
- 1:56Speaker 1: a couple weeks ago, Hey, Ed, give up the number,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and he just panicked. He was totally flustered.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I gave that number out so many times over so
- 2:04Speaker 1: many years that uh I wake up in the morning
- 2:08Speaker 1: saying 888-564-6173. That's how I begin my prayer in the morning.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a devotion and the K-wave phone number. That's right.
- 2:23Speaker 2: So, we do have Brian and Phil here today to
- 2:26Speaker 2: answer the questions that you guys have. So what kind
- 2:28Speaker 2: of questions do you have? Call in. We'd love to
- 2:30Speaker 2: hear from you at 888-564-6173. You can also watch us online, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram. Uh,
- 2:37Speaker 2: Phil Metzger, you guys doing anything for, uh, October 31st?
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah, well, we're, it looks like we're about to get
- 2:44Speaker 2: rained out. We normally do an outdoor kind of a, um,
- 2:48Speaker 2: trunk or treat slash skating night slash food and bouncy houses,
- 2:54Speaker 2: the whole deal, but it looks like it's gonna, um,
- 2:57Speaker 2: rain down here pretty good. So we're, we're kind of
- 3:00Speaker 2: moving indoors. We're still gonna have it 5 to 8 p.m.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Calvery San Diego.
- 3:04Speaker 2: And we, you know, recently renovated our sanctuary, so it's
- 3:07Speaker 2: a nice big open floor. We're gonna bring everything that
- 3:10Speaker 2: was outside, inside, and, um, it should be a lot
- 3:13Speaker 2: of fun, you
- 3:15Speaker 1: know, Phil, are you guys having the tide issue down
- 3:18Speaker 1: there where you've got, um, you've got water coming up
- 3:21Speaker 1: and covering the
- 3:23Speaker 1: streets?
- 3:23Speaker 2: Most of our coast had the same, same flooding kind
- 3:26Speaker 2: of things you guys did up there, yeah, Mission Beach
- 3:28Speaker 2: and
- 3:29Speaker 2: Uh, had pretty terrible flooding, yeah, yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I, I saw a bunch of that yesterday on, um, Instagram,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and I thought, what I mean, is this really happening?
- 3:39Speaker 1: And the crazy thing is I, I called the Huntington
- 3:43Speaker 1: Beach surf report and they just gave me the surf
- 3:45Speaker 1: report and basically said nothing about it. So I thought,
- 3:49Speaker 1: is this real? But then I saw um.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I saw a warning, you know, one of those alert
- 3:54Speaker 1: things come through on the phone today that said PCH
- 3:57Speaker 1: and Warner were shut down because of, uh, flooding. So,
- 4:01Speaker 1: so it is really happening and apparently Warner, wow, yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 1: apparently what it is, um, because, you know, they say
- 4:07Speaker 1: these king tide, 6 ft tides, a 6 ft tide
- 4:10Speaker 1: is a normal, I mean they're high, but they're, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: they've always been.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Uh, but apparently it's this, there's, you know, because of the, um,
- 4:18Speaker 1: El Nino and there's some other factor there that's causing,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, these surges of, um.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It's not big surf necessarily. It's just, you know, surges
- 4:29Speaker 1: bringing the water much further in than it would normally come,
- 4:33Speaker 2: yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And what about the Kelvin waves?
- 4:35Speaker 1: That's what
- 4:36Speaker 2: it
- 4:36Speaker 1: is,
- 4:36Speaker 2: yeah, yeah. Got those to contend with too, but you
- 4:40Speaker 2: still want to get out on the water. I know
- 4:41Speaker 2: you do as a former
- 4:42Speaker 1: surfer. Well, you know, I'm not a Calvinist, so I,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I don't know, you know, if I could actually boom boom.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Oh
- 4:52Speaker 2: man.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I haven't surfed in so long, it's not even funny.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I mean, it's like a joke. People ask me if
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'm a surfer. I'm like.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Let me show you a picture from many years ago
- 5:07Speaker 1: just to prove that I actually could surf at one
- 5:09Speaker 1: time in my life, but.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I don't know. At least you got documentation.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Documentation, yeah, it's important.
- 5:17Speaker 2: All right, let's begin with a question that was submitted
- 5:19Speaker 2: online through the pastor's perspective Facebook page using messenger. Zaida
- 5:25Speaker 2: wrote in a couple of days ago, I went across
- 5:28Speaker 2: a reel on Instagram, and this lady was saying that
- 5:31Speaker 2: the FDA.
- 5:33Speaker 2: had approved food with the halal seal, which means that
- 5:38Speaker 2: in any time during the process of making that food,
- 5:40Speaker 2: a Muslim person offered it to its idols, or at
- 5:43Speaker 2: least that's what I understood. I want to know if
- 5:45Speaker 2: you know anything about that symbol on some food products,
- 5:48Speaker 2: and if we as Christians should consume food with the
- 5:53Speaker 2: halal label. Thank you so much for taking the time
- 5:56Speaker 2: to answer my question, and uh this is Aida in Fontana.
- 6:01Speaker 2: So Phil,
- 6:02Speaker 2: What do you know about halal?
- 6:04Speaker 2: Well, as I understand, um, I don't know a lot.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'll start there. Uh, how's that? Uh, but as I understand,
- 6:11Speaker 2: that's just a way of, um, expressing that it was
- 6:15Speaker 2: prepared and handled in a way that would be what
- 6:18Speaker 2: we would call kosher, right? Kosher, referring to food that, that,
- 6:23Speaker 2: that a Jewish person would eat that would have, that
- 6:26Speaker 2: would be acceptable according to their standards, right? We use
- 6:29Speaker 2: the word kosher pretty much in, in our regular, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 2: vocabulary now.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Um, but that would be referring to food offered that, that,
- 6:37Speaker 2: that a Jewish person would say is acceptable. Halal would
- 6:40Speaker 2: be what it would be considered for a Muslim person,
- 6:43Speaker 2: but I, I don't believe that means it was offered.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Uh, you know, there's no idolatry involved in that. It
- 6:50Speaker 2: just simply means it's food that like is, it passes
- 6:52Speaker 2: their criteria, that's it. So, if it's halal and you
- 6:56Speaker 2: like meat, then it's probably great, great tasting.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Brian. No, that's, that's exactly what I would have said. Yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think, um, you know, especially the part about idols. No, it's,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I mean, Islam is very, um,
- 7:13Speaker 1: You know, antagonistic toward idols in, in one sense, obviously,
- 7:17Speaker 1: you know, rigidly monotheistic with Allah. And so to think
- 7:24Speaker 1: that it would be offered to idols, I think is
- 7:26Speaker 1: a is a mistaken notion. And I think that's a
- 7:29Speaker 1: perfect comparison, Phil, is kosher food is basically food that
- 7:34Speaker 1: has been approved by a rabbinate, uh, which are the,
- 7:39Speaker 1: you know, the Jewish religious leaders.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And so I think you've got the same thing with
- 7:44Speaker 1: the um halal food.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So this is just one of those examples of people
- 7:49Speaker 2: posting allegedly we haven't seen this video that Zaida came across,
- 7:54Speaker 2: but just people posting this stuff that's supposed to make
- 7:58Speaker 2: Christians just freak out and say, see, this is what
- 8:01Speaker 2: the FDA is doing. They're allowing this in the US now.
- 8:04Speaker 2: There is a lot of stuff that the US is allowing,
- 8:06Speaker 2: but you know this, yeah,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you
- 8:08Speaker 1: know, the, the, yeah, I mean, it's, you know, I
- 8:11Speaker 1: think it could be a
- 8:14Speaker 1: Um, it's just an exaggerated situation, you know, they're, they're accommodating,
- 8:21Speaker 1: they're not imposing this on the general population. This is
- 8:27Speaker 1: something they do within their context. So I think that's
- 8:31Speaker 1: understandable and, you know, it's fine. Uh, there, there's a
- 8:34Speaker 1: big blow up in the UK, uh, over, um.
- 8:40Speaker 1: This whole issue of halal, um, food and meat, uh,
- 8:44Speaker 1: because a particular man who I think was a Sikhkh, uh,
- 8:48Speaker 1: had a, you know, has a, has a restaurant, and
- 8:51Speaker 1: he refused to prepare halal food and so they rioted and,
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, beat him up and all, all the nice
- 8:58Speaker 1: things that tolerant, yeah, they, they normally do, but
- 9:03Speaker 1: Um, but, but again, that was because they were trying
- 9:07Speaker 1: to impose it like, you know, you, you better make
- 9:09Speaker 1: this food or we're gonna make your life miserable. So,
- 9:13Speaker 1: I mean that does happen, but that's not what's happening
- 9:15Speaker 1: here and, and I've not even, I mean, I don't
- 9:17Speaker 1: even know if that's true if the, if, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I would imagine it's true just because it's not a
- 9:25Speaker 1: bad thing, but.
- 9:29Speaker 2: If the government
- 9:30Speaker 2: Uh, I was gonna say the amount of videos that
- 9:32Speaker 2: are out there that are like they only exist to
- 9:35Speaker 2: get you to watch it long enough so that they
- 9:38Speaker 2: feed their own marketing system is like unreal. It's just unreal.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I mean like you don't even have to say not
- 9:45Speaker 2: one word that you use has to be true anymore.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It's like the whole thing can be a lie and hey.
- 9:53Speaker 2: They'll even take everybody yelling at them. That's a lie.
- 9:55Speaker 2: That's a lie. That's a lie. Hey, good, keep on
- 9:57Speaker 2: bringing it. Just keep on, you know, because they make
- 10:00Speaker 2: money off this stuff. It's pretty wild because I've suddenly
- 10:02Speaker 2: amassed 3 million views and monetized and all that other stuff.
- 10:07Speaker 2: But yeah, if you guys come across these videos, feel
- 10:10Speaker 2: free to call in or write to.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Now, keep in mind, we do not watch all these
- 10:15Speaker 2: videos that come out. I mean, how many of them
- 10:18Speaker 2: come out every single day, you would imagine, and sometimes
- 10:21Speaker 2: people will send a link or a photo of something. Here,
- 10:24Speaker 2: what do you think of this? It's like, yeah, I,
- 10:25Speaker 2: we don't have 2 hours to listen to this whole
- 10:28Speaker 2: interview or whatever the case might be, but
- 10:31Speaker 2: This allows me to make my case for radio, for K-wave,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and how when you hear Bible teaching here on K-wave, um,
- 10:40Speaker 2: you can trust it because we vet everybody who's on K-wave,
- 10:44Speaker 2: we're not just gonna put anyone on, uh, whereas on
- 10:47Speaker 2: YouTube or Instagram or whatever, anybody can upload anything and,
- 10:52Speaker 2: and it's
- 10:53Speaker 2: You know, taken as gospel truth when it may not be. So,
- 10:57Speaker 2: you can trust what you hear on Kwave and uh
- 11:00Speaker 2: you can call in when you have questions about what
- 11:03Speaker 2: you hear anywhere else. 888-564-6173 is our number. Gonna be
- 11:08Speaker 2: here till 4 o'clock. We'd love to hear from you.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Here's another question that was submitted online. This one is
- 11:12Speaker 2: from Dan in Riverside, who uh says that he was
- 11:17Speaker 2: speaking to a Mormon concerning Colossians 1 verses 15 and 16.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Let me read that passage really quick.
- 11:26Speaker 2: The sun is the image of the invisible God, the
- 11:29Speaker 2: firstborn over all creation, for in Him all things were created,
- 11:34Speaker 2: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether
- 11:38Speaker 2: thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things have
- 11:41Speaker 2: been created through Him and for Him.
- 11:44Speaker 2: So, Dan asks, how do I argue for the divinity
- 11:48Speaker 2: of Christ through these scriptures when the literal meanings of
- 11:52Speaker 2: image and firstborn are just that, and then also when
- 11:55Speaker 2: it says all things were created for him. Is this
- 11:58Speaker 2: basically a problem of understanding Christ's dual identities? What would
- 12:03Speaker 2: you say, Brian?
- 12:06Speaker 1: Well, first of all, I think it's a common mistake
- 12:10Speaker 1: to think of first born in the sense of the
- 12:13Speaker 1: first one born, uh, which is, it can mean that, um,
- 12:19Speaker 1: but it means more than that in the Bible and
- 12:22Speaker 1: the the term actually means the, um, probably the best
- 12:27Speaker 1: way to understand it.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Is the preeminent one or the one who has um
- 12:32Speaker 1: supremacy overall. So that's that's what it means uh the
- 12:36Speaker 1: Lord in um I think it's Psalm 78, um, he,
- 12:42Speaker 1: he speaks of, um, I will make him speaking of
- 12:46Speaker 1: the Messiah, I will make him my firstborn, the highest
- 12:50Speaker 1: over the kings of the earth. So that's the idea,
- 12:53Speaker 1: the highest over. So, so don't, don't interpret that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Uh, as a, a statement that Jesus, because what the
- 13:03Speaker 1: cults will do is they'll say, see right here, Jesus
- 13:05Speaker 1: was the first, uh, of, of the creation, and, um,
- 13:11Speaker 1: it doesn't, it says that he's over. He's the firstborn
- 13:14Speaker 1: over creation. So even the word over kind of gives
- 13:17Speaker 1: the idea of, of what the word is actually referring to.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Um, what was the other part of the question?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Phil, Phil, do you remember? No, I'm, I think you
- 13:28Speaker 2: answered it, Brian. I was gonna say is that it? I,
- 13:31Speaker 2: I think you answered it. I was just gonna add
- 13:33Speaker 2: he should not try to argue, um.
- 13:36Speaker 2: You know, in just verses 15 and 16, probably like
- 13:39Speaker 2: read verse 17, it says Jesus existed before anything else
- 13:43Speaker 2: and he holds all creation together. So, you know, I
- 13:47Speaker 2: think a lot of times people wanna like pigeon us, like, hey,
- 13:50Speaker 2: this verse says this, it's like, yeah, but these other
- 13:52Speaker 2: 43 verses say this, like,
- 13:55Speaker 2: You know, if you, if you wanna try to hold
- 13:57Speaker 2: one thing, I, I don't know, it was, I heard
- 14:00Speaker 2: a professor say, basically every
- 14:03Speaker 2: Like Christian adjacent cults, you know, you can get from
- 14:06Speaker 2: the book of Job if you just take two verses
- 14:08Speaker 2: out of context. And uh I think it's pretty true.
- 14:11Speaker 2: So if you, if you look at verse 17, it's
- 14:13Speaker 2: pretty clear that he's speaking of the preeminence of Jesus
- 14:16Speaker 1: as
- 14:16Speaker 2: Brian used that word as a better word than the
- 14:19Speaker 2: idea of firstborn being chronological, but firstborn being preeminent. It's a,
- 14:23Speaker 2: it's a really important distinction.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And, and the passage goes on to speak of Jesus, um, as, uh, in,
- 14:32Speaker 1: in him.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Uh, all the fullness of the deity dwells bodily.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So that that's pretty clear right there. The fullness of
- 14:43Speaker 1: God dwells bodily in him. So, you know, uh, yeah, I,
- 14:49Speaker 1: you know, with the, with the cults, um, regardless of
- 14:52Speaker 1: which one it is, when it comes to their, their
- 14:55Speaker 1: teachings on Jesus, they are always taking a few passages.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Uh, most of the time taking them out of context, uh,
- 15:05Speaker 1: other times misinterpreting what they actually say, and then coming
- 15:09Speaker 1: up with a wrong view. But like Phil said, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: if you take the other 43 verses,
- 15:17Speaker 1: I, I heard some guy the other day, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 1: arguing about, you know, Jesus, the, the deity of Jesus,
- 15:24Speaker 1: and he was arguing against it because, you know, Jesus
- 15:27Speaker 1: said this and he did that, and my father is
- 15:29Speaker 1: greater than I and this sort of thing. And I
- 15:32Speaker 1: just thought, you know, this poor guy, I could give
- 15:34Speaker 1: him 10 verses right off the top of my head
- 15:37Speaker 1: that state, and he was basically saying Jesus never claimed
- 15:41Speaker 1: to be God. I thought, OK, well, you need to
- 15:44Speaker 1: read your Bible a little more closely.
- 15:48Speaker 2: So I found the other question that Dan had, uh,
- 15:52Speaker 2: it's just, when it says all things were created for him.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Uh, but we might have answered that already, right? Well,
- 16:00Speaker 2: I think is just basically a problem of understanding. When
- 16:02Speaker 2: I heard that, that doesn't make, I, I don't see
- 16:05Speaker 2: how that would be a contradiction of, you know, understanding
- 16:09Speaker 2: that there's no duality there. If he is the preeminent one,
- 16:12Speaker 2: then everything exists for him.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and, and doesn't the passage say by him and
- 16:19Speaker 1: for him?
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, in him for by him and through him, I think,
- 16:23Speaker 2: or for him, yeah, something,
- 16:24Speaker 1: yeah, and if, if Colossians doesn't say it, Ephesians does.
- 16:29Speaker 2: All right, Dan, thank you so much for sending in
- 16:31Speaker 2: that question through the pastor's perspective Facebook page using messenger. And, uh,
- 16:37Speaker 2: by the way, the number again 888-564-6173. Here's one more
- 16:42Speaker 2: that was sent in online. It is from Karen.
- 16:46Speaker 2: She says, I know the Bible does not state our
- 16:49Speaker 2: pets go to heaven, but in Genesis.
- 16:53Speaker 2: It states that God also made a covenant with all creatures.
- 16:59Speaker 2: It also states, there are animals in heaven.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I lost my dog 10 days ago or 10 days
- 17:08Speaker 2: after major surgery, and I am majorly devastated to the
- 17:13Speaker 2: point that my psychologist wanted to admit me to the
- 17:18Speaker 2: psych hospital. I did not go, but, um, what would
- 17:21Speaker 2: you say to Karen, Phil? Well, I would say that's terrible.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I'm so sorry. That's awful. Right after surgery and then
- 17:28Speaker 2: you lose your dog.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Um, yeah, that's, that's bad, and it sounds like that
- 17:32Speaker 2: puts you quite in a state. Um, I hope you're
- 17:35Speaker 2: doing better is what I would say, I guess, uh,
- 17:38Speaker 2: in terms of like pets in heaven and the covenant idea, um, I,
- 17:42Speaker 2: I do think
- 17:43Speaker 2: That there's pets in heaven, uh, for sure. Um, I
- 17:47Speaker 2: don't know that I would use the Genesis covenant to
- 17:49Speaker 2: animals as like that all animals, like every cockroach that's
- 17:54Speaker 2: ever existed will be in heaven because of that covenant.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Um, I wouldn't go so far as that, but because
- 18:01Speaker 2: God is so, um, so he's a consuming fire. He like,
- 18:06Speaker 2: he loves humanity so much, and, um, I'm absolutely certain
- 18:10Speaker 2: that he is thinking of you always, and that'll include
- 18:14Speaker 2: into your eternity. So, the idea that your pet will
- 18:16Speaker 2: be there for you when you're there, why not? I
- 18:19Speaker 2: don't see any reason why that couldn't happen.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Brian
- 18:25Speaker 1: Um, I, I agree. I, I agree with Phil. Uh,
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think I've shared this before, but I remember many, many,
- 18:32Speaker 1: many years ago where I, um, had a friend who, he,
- 18:36Speaker 1: he was a friend and he was, he was a
- 18:38Speaker 1: great brother, but he was so
- 18:42Speaker 1: Adamant that animals did not go to heaven and if
- 18:46Speaker 1: you even thought that they might, um, then you, you know,
- 18:51Speaker 1: you had some serious theological issues and, and I remember
- 18:55Speaker 1: kind of just debating with them and, and I don't
- 18:58Speaker 1: even like saying go to heaven because I mean we're,
- 19:01Speaker 1: you know, but, but meeting us in the place where
- 19:04Speaker 1: we will be ultimately, uh, I love, you know, Phil's brilliant.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Uh
- 19:12Speaker 1: Perspective of uh why not? I mean, you know, why not?
- 19:17Speaker 1: God loves us. He loves these creatures somehow, uh, we
- 19:23Speaker 1: fall in love with these animals and um, you know, there's,
- 19:27Speaker 1: I think there's something to, I think there's so much more,
- 19:30Speaker 1: you know, as, as I've mentioned and most people know
- 19:34Speaker 1: about the um the passing of my son-in-law 6 months ago,
- 19:38Speaker 1: 7 months ago now.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Uh, um, you know, it's caused us to really think
- 19:43Speaker 1: much more deeply about heaven and about the future and about,
- 19:48Speaker 1: you know, and, and I think we have just sold
- 19:50Speaker 1: it so short. I was listening to Randy Alcorn, who, uh,
- 19:54Speaker 1: is a great, you know, theologian, and he wrote the,
- 19:57Speaker 1: the book called Heaven. And Randy, Randy was saying, um,
- 20:02Speaker 1: you know, he's he's talking about being in seminary.
- 20:05Speaker 1: And you know, being in a class where they're talking
- 20:08Speaker 1: about eschatology, so eschatology is the study of the, the
- 20:12Speaker 1: end basically, and he said in, in the, in the
- 20:16Speaker 1: eschatology classes they would spend the majority of time debating
- 20:22Speaker 1: the rapture and then they would have like 10 minutes
- 20:25Speaker 1: at the end to talk about the new heaven and
- 20:27Speaker 1: the new earth and he said, you know, it's like
- 20:31Speaker 1: this is the place we are going to spend eternity.
- 20:35Speaker 1: But we put so little thought into really, you know, grasping,
- 20:42Speaker 1: you know, what it's gonna be about, and I think,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, with our family experience, of course, it's really
- 20:48Speaker 1: forced us in, in that direction, which, which has been
- 20:52Speaker 1: beautiful man, Phil, I'll tell you, you know who I
- 20:55Speaker 1: I I'll tell you a person who just got it is, uh, Spurgeon.
- 21:02Speaker 1: Man, Spurgeon got it. He just, he has so many
- 21:05Speaker 1: unbelievably rich things on the future and on heaven and yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 1: such good stuff, so.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I think sometimes like theology, which is like the study
- 21:19Speaker 2: of God, the study of the Bible, and so on
- 21:21Speaker 2: in a general sense, I think it's almost like we're
- 21:24Speaker 2: a little, it's like we're, I don't wanna say afraid,
- 21:27Speaker 2: but like we hesitate too much on
- 21:31Speaker 2: Heaven because it's like we don't know, like we just
- 21:34Speaker 2: don't understand, right? So we're gonna like spend all of
- 21:37Speaker 2: our time on what we think we can understand and then,
- 21:40Speaker 2: but it really does a disservice to the average person
- 21:42Speaker 2: like the rest of us because it's like I'm gonna
- 21:45Speaker 2: spend a lot less time here on earth than I
- 21:47Speaker 2: do in heaven and um yeah, it's a, it's a,
- 21:50Speaker 2: that's a really great observation. I wanna, I'm gonna think
- 21:53Speaker 2: on that a little bit more. I like that. And
- 21:55Speaker 2: we're gonna spend a lot less time in the rapture than.
- 22:01Speaker 2: In on earth or in heaven, right? It's like the
- 22:04Speaker 2: twinkling of an eye, and here we are spending 90%
- 22:06Speaker 2: of the time.
- 22:08Speaker 2: Figuring out what it's gonna be like and everything else
- 22:11Speaker 2: and you'll, you'll have flossed more in your lifetime than
- 22:14Speaker 2: the rapture will take. I mean, basically everything you do
- 22:16Speaker 2: will have been faster or longer than the rapture,
- 22:19Speaker 1: even blinking your eye.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Yes, a yawn.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Thank you, Karen, for sending in your question on uh
- 22:28Speaker 2: Pastor's Perspectives Facebook page, and I will go to the
- 22:31Speaker 2: phones at 888-564-6173, 888-564-6173. Catherine in Monrovia. Hi, welcome to
- 22:39Speaker 2: the show. Hi, you guys, thanks for having me. If
- 22:43Speaker 2: God knows everything,
- 22:45Speaker 2: including choice, what we make, the choices
- 22:48Speaker 2: we make.
- 22:49Speaker 2: What does it mean in the Bible in Genesis 6:6
- 22:53Speaker 2: when God said he regretted making mankind? I'm confused.
- 22:58Speaker 2: What do you say, Phil?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great question and um thanks for asking that,
- 23:04Speaker 2: and it's, it's not so, so oftentimes the Bible uses
- 23:10Speaker 2: rhetoric or words like linguistic words that we, language that
- 23:15Speaker 2: we humans would understand so that he can express something
- 23:20Speaker 2: that we could understand.
- 23:22Speaker 2: It, so the language of that God regrets is not the, the, the, the,
- 23:28Speaker 2: the takeaway is not that God actually felt the emotion
- 23:31Speaker 2: of regret or that he made a decision and then
- 23:36Speaker 2: realized he made the wrong decision, but it's a way
- 23:38Speaker 2: of expressing his sadness. It's a way of God expressing
- 23:42Speaker 2: His, um, like what the New Testament would call, like,
- 23:45Speaker 2: would say, do not grieve the Holy Spirit. Well, how
- 23:47Speaker 2: can you grieve the Holy Spirit if the Holy Spirit
- 23:49Speaker 2: knew you were going to do that in the first place, right?
- 23:52Speaker 2: If the Spirit knew I was going to sin, then
- 23:55Speaker 2: wouldn't he have already prepared himself for that, so as
- 23:57Speaker 2: not to be grieved.
- 23:59Speaker 2: And yet that wouldn't, that wouldn't teach me the lesson
- 24:02Speaker 2: the Bible wants me to learn, and that is that
- 24:04Speaker 2: my sin impacts God. And so the language that is
- 24:08Speaker 2: used is used to express a sense of emotion that
- 24:12Speaker 2: God feels, even though he knows all things, he still
- 24:15Speaker 2: feels a sense of sorrow and sadness and grief and
- 24:19Speaker 2: what we would call regret, though it is not the
- 24:21Speaker 2: regret of human language. Brian. Wow, that was good.
- 24:27Speaker 2: That was a good answer, pastor. Thank you. I, that
- 24:30Speaker 2: was my next question, whether he experienced grief. Pastors, thank
- 24:35Speaker 2: you so much. I love you guys. Keep up the
- 24:38Speaker 2: great work,
- 24:39Speaker 1: OK? Thank you. Yes, if
- 24:41Speaker 1: you
- 24:41Speaker 2: insist,
- 24:43Speaker 1: well, I
- 24:43Speaker 2: love you. Thank you.
- 24:46Speaker 1: You know, just looking at that passage, Phil, and that
- 24:49Speaker 1: was a great answer. Um, you know, verse 5 says,
- 24:53Speaker 1: and you know, before that we're talking about, um, you know,
- 24:57Speaker 1: God says that the spirit will not always, uh, contend with,
- 25:01Speaker 1: with humans and, um, and then the Nephilim were on
- 25:05Speaker 1: the earth in those days. Sons of God went into
- 25:08Speaker 1: the daughters of, of humans and and so forth. But then,
- 25:12Speaker 1: Um, verse 5, the Lord saw how great the wickedness
- 25:17Speaker 1: of the human race had become on the earth and
- 25:20Speaker 1: that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart
- 25:23Speaker 1: was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that
- 25:27Speaker 1: He had made human beings on the earth, and you think, OK,
- 25:29Speaker 1: so God knows in advance that He, of course He
- 25:33Speaker 1: knows everything, so He knows that this is, I'm gonna
- 25:36Speaker 1: create this world and this is where it's gonna go.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But now it's actually it's, it's, it's being actualized. It
- 25:43Speaker 1: it is, it's actually going where he knew it would go,
- 25:47Speaker 1: and it's a grief to him.
- 25:50Speaker 1: That and I think, you know, your point, Phil, is,
- 25:53Speaker 1: is the right point. It's not like God's like, oh
- 25:56Speaker 1: dang it. Why did I do that? I thought, I
- 25:59Speaker 1: thought that it was going to go a different direction. Oh,
- 26:02Speaker 1: I regret that decision. That's not what we're talking about
- 26:06Speaker 1: because that would be in conflict with other things that
- 26:08Speaker 1: we're told about God. So yeah, but, but as God is,
- 26:13Speaker 1: you know, experiencing it in real time, the, the wickedness
- 26:18Speaker 1: of humanity.
- 26:19Speaker 1: This is the.
- 26:21Speaker 1: The saddening thing, the grieving thing.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Phil, any other thoughts? No.
- 26:27Speaker 2: All right, Catherine, thanks so much for your phone call
- 26:30Speaker 2: today on Pastor's Perspective. 888-564-6173 is our number. Uh, here's
- 26:36Speaker 2: one that Martha sent in on Facebook. Uh, you know,
- 26:40Speaker 2: we're seeing all the Halloween decorations up in the stores,
- 26:43Speaker 2: which means it's time for a Christmas question. And, uh,
- 26:47Speaker 2: Martha's question is about Jeremiah 10. Does this refer to
- 26:51Speaker 2: Christmas trees? Should we not have Christmas trees in our home?
- 26:56Speaker 2: Brian.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Uh, well, that all depends. If you like a Christmas tree,
- 27:02Speaker 1: you should have one. If you don't, then you don't
- 27:05Speaker 1: have to have one. There's no rule either way, but
- 27:09Speaker 1: Jeremiah has zero to do with a Christmas tree. Uh,
- 27:15Speaker 1: Jeremiah is describing the process of making an idol and
- 27:21Speaker 1: bowing down to it. You're taking the wood, the tree,
- 27:25Speaker 1: and then decking it with gold.
- 27:27Speaker 1: And this is the process of, of making an idol. Isaiah, uh,
- 27:33Speaker 1: chapter maybe 44, 45, 46 in there describes the same,
- 27:40Speaker 1: almost the same exact thing. And um, so.
- 27:45Speaker 1: No, nothing to do with the Christmas tree. Um, people think, oh,
- 27:52Speaker 1: you know, this all originated in Babylon and to be
- 27:56Speaker 1: participating in this is to be, uh, involving yourself in,
- 28:01Speaker 1: in pagan idolatry, and this is just not.
- 28:04Speaker 1: The case and you know there have been people in
- 28:07Speaker 1: church history that just they just are allergic to fun
- 28:11Speaker 1: and joy and those kinds of things so they come
- 28:15Speaker 1: up with dumb ideas and then put everybody under bondage
- 28:20Speaker 1: so they don't have any fun and whoever came up
- 28:23Speaker 1: with that.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Might have been Alexander Hyslop. I, I'm not gonna totally
- 28:27Speaker 1: blame him, but he did write The Two Babylons, so
- 28:31Speaker 1: it could have been him, but, um.
- 28:34Speaker 1: We're not under such superstition
- 28:37Speaker 1: here,
- 28:37Speaker 2: but that said, if you read, if anybody just reading
- 28:41Speaker 2: the verse maybe for the first time ever or something,
- 28:44Speaker 2: it does talk about, you know, cutting a tree and
- 28:46Speaker 2: like you read, like you said, Brian, the adorning it
- 28:49Speaker 2: with silver and gold and everything else, so we can
- 28:52Speaker 2: see why people would think that. Well,
- 28:55Speaker 1: I think you would only think it if somebody put
- 28:57Speaker 1: it in your head that you should think it. I
- 28:58Speaker 1: don't think the average.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I don't think a new Christian would read that and go,
- 29:03Speaker 1: oh my gosh, he's talking about a Christmas tree there.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I mean, maybe they would, but I think you'd have
- 29:09Speaker 1: to have somebody say to you, hey, did you know
- 29:11Speaker 1: that that's a Christmas tree.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Phil, 30 seconds. I was just thinking, 0, 30 seconds. OK,
- 29:16Speaker 2: here we go. I was just thinking about this is
- 29:18Speaker 2: one of the actual, like the issue we're talking about,
- 29:21Speaker 2: and I think of Halloween in the same way. This
- 29:23Speaker 2: is one of the issues that makes like Google and
- 29:25Speaker 2: the internet so great because we used to get away
- 29:28Speaker 2: as pastors with saying things that were just like, we
- 29:30Speaker 2: heard threads of things from people before and before and before,
- 29:34Speaker 2: and it was a lot of nonsense. And now people
- 29:36Speaker 2: will Google that stuff before you finish your sermon, they'll
- 29:39Speaker 2: have the full answer.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And I actually think it's really good for the world
- 29:43Speaker 2: that we have these things now. Yes, I remember when
- 29:46Speaker 2: Snopes.com came out. Yes, and that was, yeah, because even
- 29:52Speaker 2: after it came out, I remember pastors telling these tall
- 29:55Speaker 2: tales of whatever, and I'm like, no, that's been disproven,
- 30:00Speaker 2: and I wanted to get up from my seat and
- 30:01Speaker 2: tell them, but I didn't. All right, we'll be back
- 30:03Speaker 2: on pastor's perspective.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Hey, we're back on Pastor's Perspective. Phone lines are open
- 30:22Speaker 2: till 4 o'clock. 888-564-6173 is the number to call. You
- 30:27Speaker 2: can ask your questions of Pastor Brian Broderson, Pastor Phil Metzger.
- 30:32Speaker 2: We'd love to hear from you at 888-564-6173. Phil is
- 30:37Speaker 2: not back yet.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Uh oh, well,
- 30:41Speaker 1: You'll have to fill in. OK, so we'll do our best.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna ask the next question and I'm gonna give
- 30:46Speaker 1: it to you. Oh man, wait, no, because you know
- 30:50Speaker 1: I am actually the host today because remember I started, um,
- 30:54Speaker 1: but let's go back to the Christmas tree. Oh, sure, sure, OK, so, um, with,
- 30:59Speaker 1: with the Christmas tree and the idea of, of its
- 31:02Speaker 1: pagan origins, um, most people believe that, um, Martin Luther.
- 31:09Speaker 1: was most responsible for what we know today as the
- 31:14Speaker 1: Christmas tree, and for him there was all this rich symbolism.
- 31:19Speaker 1: It was an evergreen tree which spoke to us of
- 31:22Speaker 1: everlasting life, and then the tree was taken and it
- 31:26Speaker 1: was decorated and it was all decorated. It was decorated
- 31:29Speaker 1: in gold because of the royalty of Jesus and things
- 31:32Speaker 1: like that. So I think that's a much better uh.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Understanding of this tradition than trying to see, um, you know,
- 31:45Speaker 1: paganism always sort of trying to make its way, you know,
- 31:50Speaker 1: into the church. I mean, obviously that did happen at
- 31:54Speaker 1: times and.
- 31:56Speaker 1: You can read the New Testament and you find that
- 31:58Speaker 1: there's some of that that they're dealing with then. But,
- 32:01Speaker 1: but I think, again, I think that there is just
- 32:04Speaker 1: that tendency sometimes for people to um
- 32:09Speaker 1: You know, just kind of see a demon under every rock,
- 32:12Speaker 1: and it's just, it's not the case.
- 32:15Speaker 2: OK, now we'll go to the phones. Soraya, listening to
- 32:20Speaker 2: K-wave in Irvine, California. Thanks for calling 888-564-6173.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Hey, hello, what's your question?
- 32:31Speaker 2: Hi, how are
- 32:31Speaker 1: you? Thank you so much for your time.
- 32:33Speaker 2: My question
- 32:34Speaker 1: is, you know,
- 32:35Speaker 2: in, I'm, I'm not very, uh,
- 32:37Speaker 1: I haven't been a very good student about reading my Bible,
- 32:42Speaker 1: but in Genesis, there's just Adam and Eve, and then
- 32:45Speaker 1: we have the, the Cain and the other guy, Cain
- 32:49Speaker 1: and who is the brother? Abel.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Abel, OK. And then one of the boys, I guess
- 32:57Speaker 1: it's Cain, he goes to the other village and marries
- 33:00Speaker 1: a girl. So where did those people come from?
- 33:05Speaker 1: If you only have Adam and Eve, and then they
- 33:07Speaker 1: have their children, right? So one of the boys goes
- 33:11Speaker 1: to the village, cross the whatever, cross this freeway, and
- 33:17Speaker 1: there's a girl.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Where did they come from? This is such a great question,
- 33:23Speaker 1: and I'm really glad you're calling and asking it in,
- 33:27Speaker 1: in all sincerity. I mean, it's, it's great because it.
- 33:31Speaker 1: This has been a, this has been a question that
- 33:33Speaker 1: even some leading atheists have brought up in debates to,
- 33:37Speaker 1: you know, try to prove that the idea that all
- 33:41Speaker 1: of humanity, you know, came from just two people and
- 33:44Speaker 1: so forth is nonsense. And, you know, where did King
- 33:48Speaker 1: get his wife? That's been asked many times. Well, here's
- 33:52Speaker 1: the thing to to know. The Bible.
- 33:56Speaker 1: It's, it's not a history book in the sense that
- 34:00Speaker 1: it tells us, you know, all of the details of
- 34:03Speaker 1: the lives of the people that it discusses. The Bible
- 34:07Speaker 1: is what you call a history of redemption. So it
- 34:10Speaker 1: tells us about the people primarily who are involved in
- 34:14Speaker 1: the redemptive process. And so in the fifth chapter of Genesis,
- 34:20Speaker 1: we read about Adam.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Who there it's uh talking to us about another son
- 34:26Speaker 1: of Adam named Seth and it says that Adam had
- 34:30Speaker 1: many sons and daughters so we only know the names
- 34:36Speaker 1: of three Cain, Abel, and Seth but he had many
- 34:40Speaker 1: sons and daughters and so this would be where the
- 34:44Speaker 1: um
- 34:46Speaker 1: The, the woman would have come from, uh, who would
- 34:50Speaker 1: become the wife of Cain. So, of course, in those times,
- 34:53Speaker 1: there wasn't the issue of, well, wait, she's your sister,
- 34:56Speaker 1: you can't marry her. Um,
- 34:59Speaker 1: You know, all of that would would come later when
- 35:03Speaker 1: God gave the law to Israel. But at the time,
- 35:07Speaker 1: the world was repopulated initially through the children of Adam, uh,
- 35:12Speaker 1: marrying one another and having children and then the the
- 35:15Speaker 1: population growing.
- 35:17Speaker 2: What do you think, Soraya?
- 35:21Speaker 2: Oh.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Oh,
- 35:23Speaker 1: wondering.
- 35:24Speaker 2: OK, I mean, I have to accept
- 35:27Speaker 1: what, what, what can I say.
- 35:30Speaker 2: The other thing is that when we pray, we say,
- 35:33Speaker 1: you know,
- 35:33Speaker 2: we say all of our prayers, and then we say
- 35:35Speaker 2: in Jesus' name,
- 35:37Speaker 1: I bring this prayer to you or what.
- 35:40Speaker 2: If we believe in trinity, then why do you say Jesus' name?
- 35:47Speaker 2: Why don't we say in the name of the Father,
- 35:49Speaker 2: the Son, and the Holy Spirit?
- 35:51Speaker 2: Right, yeah, Phil.
- 35:54Speaker 2: I, you know, Brent, I didn't hear, it's, it's a
- 35:56Speaker 2: little bit bummer, I didn't hear the question. OK, so,
- 35:58Speaker 2: Soraya's second question was, uh, since we believe in the Trinity,
- 36:03Speaker 2: why do we close out our prayers, and it sounds
- 36:06Speaker 2: weird to say close out our prayers. It's like, you know,
- 36:09Speaker 2: writing a letter and saying sincerely, um, but, uh, why
- 36:13Speaker 2: do we close out our prayers by saying in Jesus'
- 36:15Speaker 2: name instead of, you know, the Father, the Son, and
- 36:18Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Oh, got it. Well, you know, in like in, in
- 36:22Speaker 2: the Gospel of John, John 14, probably 15 and 16 too,
- 36:25Speaker 2: but for sure 14, Jesus says, whatever you ask in
- 36:28Speaker 2: my name, I will do. So we just kind of
- 36:31Speaker 2: take that really like right to the point, and, and
- 36:35Speaker 2: I don't wanna um take away from the fact that
- 36:37Speaker 2: Jesus is God, right? So when we are praying to, in,
- 36:41Speaker 2: in Jesus' name.
- 36:43Speaker 2: We are, it's not just like the name like the
- 36:46Speaker 2: word Jesus, those letters, but it's also the character, uh,
- 36:50Speaker 2: like he is God. So we're, we're praying in the,
- 36:53Speaker 2: in the authority of the triune God. Uh, we just don't,
- 36:57Speaker 2: that's a lot to say at the end of a
- 36:59Speaker 2: prayer for dinner. We just, we just were told in
- 37:02Speaker 2: John 14, Jesus says, whatever you ask in my name,
- 37:05Speaker 2: I will do it. So, the church has taken on
- 37:08Speaker 2: the practice of praying in Jesus' name.
- 37:11Speaker 2: What was that, Soraya?
- 37:12Speaker 1: Whatever we ask is given to us, it's they, he
- 37:17Speaker 1: sure takes his time,
- 37:18Speaker 2: the Lord God.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Really, I mean, 25 years of begging for my pain
- 37:24Speaker 1: to go away.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Well, rheumatoid arthritis and it's me crying every day, 3
- 37:32Speaker 1: or 4 times a day and praying and asking God.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I mean, really, some of this stuff is really not
- 37:39Speaker 1: fair for us human beings. And I know they say God,
- 37:43Speaker 1: you know, gives it in His timing and not our timing,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and I know that for every question.
- 37:50Speaker 1: We the human beings to have the answer, and sometimes
- 37:55Speaker 1: it makes me think about the mullahs in Iran where
- 37:59Speaker 1: I was born. Everything, every time you ask a contradicting question,
- 38:05Speaker 1: they give you some kind of answer that to me
- 38:08Speaker 1: sometimes it doesn't make much sense. But I guess there's
- 38:11Speaker 1: a lot that we don't know. End of question, right?
- 38:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think too, you know, we, I think
- 38:17Speaker 1: sometimes we have expectations that are, are not really biblical expectations.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I mean, we, everybody who's in pain wants to be
- 38:26Speaker 1: out of pain. No question about it. And everybody wants
- 38:29Speaker 1: to be out of pain as soon as possible. But
- 38:33Speaker 1: there's no place in scripture that guarantees that we will
- 38:37Speaker 1: not experience pain or that if we, you know, ask
- 38:40Speaker 1: God to deliver us from the pain that he's going
- 38:42Speaker 1: to do it.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Um, sometimes we suffer and sometimes it doesn't seem like
- 38:47Speaker 1: God hears us at all because nothing's changing. Like you said,
- 38:51Speaker 1: you've been crying out for 25 years and you still
- 38:53Speaker 1: have this, this tremendous pain. Um, and so I think
- 38:58Speaker 1: what it comes back to in your case is maybe
- 39:01Speaker 1: realizing that
- 39:03Speaker 1: God, it's, let me give you an example from the
- 39:07Speaker 1: life of Paul. Remember, Paul describes his own experience that
- 39:12Speaker 1: he has um um
- 39:15Speaker 1: He has this thorn in the flesh, he calls it, um, to,
- 39:19Speaker 1: to me was given a thorn in the flesh. And
- 39:22Speaker 1: I think just that description is, um, indicating that there's
- 39:27Speaker 1: some
- 39:29Speaker 1: Uh, amount of, of pretty serious discomfort that he is
- 39:33Speaker 1: living with. He doesn't tell us what it is, but he,
- 39:36Speaker 1: he refers to it as a thorn in the flesh,
- 39:38Speaker 1: and then he does say it's a messenger of Satan
- 39:41Speaker 1: to buffet me. And then later he talks about rejoicing
- 39:45Speaker 1: in his infirmity. So putting all those things together, you think, OK,
- 39:50Speaker 1: Paul has some physical condition that causes him to suffer.
- 39:56Speaker 1: And he says, I sought the Lord 3 times, and
- 40:00Speaker 1: I think when he says I sought the Lord 3 times,
- 40:02Speaker 1: I don't think he prayed about it 3 times. I
- 40:05Speaker 1: think he's talking about seasons of really 3 seasons in
- 40:09Speaker 1: his life where he said, God, you have got to
- 40:12Speaker 1: deliver me from this. You have got to, uh, help me.
- 40:15Speaker 1: I can't live with this anymore, you know, that sort
- 40:18Speaker 1: of thing.
- 40:19Speaker 1: And then he says, but the Lord spoke to him
- 40:22Speaker 1: and said, My grace is sufficient for you. My strength
- 40:27Speaker 1: is made perfect in your weakness. So basically God said,
- 40:31Speaker 1: I'm not gonna heal you. I'm gonna give you grace, uh,
- 40:35Speaker 1: to persevere. And so Paul said, So then since that.
- 40:41Speaker 1: I rather rejoice in my infirmities and afflictions, knowing that
- 40:47Speaker 1: when I am weak, then I am strong.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Anything to add, Phil?
- 40:56Speaker 2: No, that was great. Yes, Soraya, thank you for calling
- 40:59Speaker 2: in today to Pastor's Perspective.
- 41:01Speaker 1: I, I just want to say that, I love Soraya's honesty.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I mean, I think that was, that was beautiful, you know.
- 41:06Speaker 1: It's because it's true. It's like, yes, you know, and,
- 41:10Speaker 1: and it is confusing sometimes because, you know, Jesus said,
- 41:13Speaker 1: whatever you ask in my name, I will give it
- 41:15Speaker 1: to you. And you're like, OK, well, Lord, I've, I'm
- 41:17Speaker 1: asking these things and you're not giving them to me. Why? Well,
- 41:20Speaker 1: I think again, I think sometimes we, even when we
- 41:23Speaker 1: read the Bible, we have to recognize that.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Uh, you know, somebody put it this way, and I,
- 41:28Speaker 1: I think there's, I think there's a lot of truth
- 41:30Speaker 1: to this.
- 41:32Speaker 1: The Bible was not written to us, but it was
- 41:34Speaker 1: written for us, and I think so often we overlook
- 41:39Speaker 1: Jesus is talking to certain people when he says these words,
- 41:44Speaker 1: and sometimes these words apply directly to those people, and
- 41:49Speaker 1: if we take them and we try to apply them
- 41:52Speaker 1: beyond that, they might apply, but they don't necessarily apply.
- 41:59Speaker 1: So in John chapter 14 through chapter 7 or 1617
- 42:04Speaker 1: is a prayer, but in those three chapters, Jesus is making,
- 42:08Speaker 1: he says, um, uh, the works that I do, you're
- 42:11Speaker 1: gonna do greater works than these. You're like, Jesus, where,
- 42:15Speaker 1: where is that? Who is Jesus talking to? He was
- 42:19Speaker 1: talking to the apostles. He was talking to the people
- 42:21Speaker 1: that he was going to send into the world who
- 42:23Speaker 1: did do the things that he did.
- 42:25Speaker 1: He wasn't talking to everybody. So I think we make
- 42:28Speaker 1: a mistake sometimes of applying to ourselves things that God
- 42:34Speaker 1: uh did not necessarily speak directly to us. Now, could
- 42:39Speaker 1: he speak those things to us? Sure, he could.
- 42:42Speaker 1: But I think that's where we come to, you know,
- 42:46Speaker 1: these individual moments where we say, yeah, I know, I
- 42:49Speaker 1: know God spoke this to the apostles there, but I
- 42:53Speaker 1: also know that he's spoken this to me as well.
- 42:56Speaker 1: And that's the beauty of the, the personal relationship that
- 43:00Speaker 1: we have with the Lord. Sometimes the Lord does do that.
- 43:03Speaker 2: And we do get the question often, and Amber, we're
- 43:06Speaker 2: gonna get to you in a moment, so don't hang up,
- 43:07Speaker 2: but there are some verses that we see in Scripture.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Jeremiah 29:11 comes up frequently where example, yeah, where people
- 43:15Speaker 2: will say, well, I claimed this for myself, and can
- 43:19Speaker 2: I claim this for myself, you know, because it was.
- 43:21Speaker 2: It was for someone else in that time. So how
- 43:25Speaker 2: do we apply that to today? Or do we, do
- 43:27Speaker 2: we just read it as a historical account, or, or what?
- 43:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and, and I'm glad you brought that up because
- 43:31Speaker 1: I think that that is a great, a great example because,
- 43:34Speaker 1: you know, what a great passage. I know the thoughts
- 43:35Speaker 1: that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of
- 43:38Speaker 1: good and not of evil to give you a future
- 43:39Speaker 1: and a hope.
- 43:41Speaker 1: And um if you look at the context, Jeremiah chapter 29,
- 43:46Speaker 1: God is speaking very specifically to the people of Israel
- 43:50Speaker 1: about the future blessing that he has for them.
- 43:53Speaker 1: So that's the first interpretation. That's who it came to
- 43:57Speaker 1: and that's who it's for, and that will be uh
- 44:01Speaker 1: the reality at the time. But I think because we
- 44:05Speaker 1: are also the people of God.
- 44:08Speaker 1: God can take that same passage that he originally spoke
- 44:11Speaker 1: to Israel and he could say, hey, guess what? This
- 44:15Speaker 1: is for you today too. I, I wanna give you
- 44:18Speaker 1: this truth that you take this truth and you embrace
- 44:22Speaker 1: it yourself. And, and I believe 100% that we, uh, are,
- 44:28Speaker 1: are to do it. That's what that's basically what taking
- 44:31Speaker 1: God at His word means. Now I've heard, I've heard
- 44:34Speaker 1: people wanna get, you know, super.
- 44:38Speaker 1: You know, well, theologically this is speaking to Israel, so we,
- 44:42Speaker 1: you know, don't try to take it and make it
- 44:44Speaker 1: a promise for yourself. Well, if that's your approach to
- 44:47Speaker 1: the Bible, you're gonna be a very poor Christian because, uh, and,
- 44:53Speaker 1: and the New Testament tells us that the things that
- 44:54Speaker 1: were spoken, the things that were written before were written
- 44:58Speaker 1: for our learning.
- 45:01Speaker 1: That we through the patience of the and the comfort
- 45:03Speaker 1: of the scriptures might have hope. So this is a
- 45:05Speaker 1: bit of a pet peeve, as you can tell because
- 45:07Speaker 1: I'm off on a tangent.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Tell us how you really feel about it. No, I
- 45:13Speaker 2: love it actually. I just, I was gonna kind of
- 45:15Speaker 2: chime in there too as you were speaking about it
- 45:17Speaker 2: and just say like it is like a common mistake
- 45:20Speaker 2: that a lot of us like in, in teaching roles
- 45:22Speaker 2: will make where, you know, you study something, you learn something,
- 45:26Speaker 2: and then you, you jump immediately more to the application
- 45:30Speaker 2: element of that and you.
- 45:32Speaker 2: You know, that's why we always learn like when you're
- 45:34Speaker 2: learning like how to like study the Bible, the hermeneutics
- 45:37Speaker 2: behind it, you, we always learn context is king, right?
- 45:41Speaker 2: So we want to stay within the context and then
- 45:44Speaker 2: the character of God allows us to extend that beyond
- 45:46Speaker 2: just that literal context into, you know, if God loves
- 45:50Speaker 2: Brian and I know the character of God, that means
- 45:52Speaker 2: he also loves me.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Or whatever, but sometimes we miss the the earlier steps. And,
- 45:57Speaker 2: and it does, it becomes confusing to people. I like
- 46:00Speaker 2: the way you've expressed that, Brian. It was great. Yeah.
- 46:02Speaker 1: And sometimes too, like when you take, and this is
- 46:05Speaker 1: where people get into all kinds of trouble with like
- 46:07Speaker 1: a prosperity doctrine and stuff, because they take promises that
- 46:10Speaker 1: God gave to the nation of Israel in covenant with him.
- 46:14Speaker 1: And then they try to apply them broadly to the church,
- 46:18Speaker 1: or they try to apply them to their own lives, like,
- 46:22Speaker 1: You know, God says this right here, you know, that
- 46:24Speaker 1: if you do this and this and that, then he's
- 46:26Speaker 1: gonna prosper you, he's gonna bless you, your, your fields
- 46:29Speaker 1: are gonna be full of crops and your, uh, you know,
- 46:32Speaker 1: your flocks are gonna flourish and all of this kind
- 46:36Speaker 1: of stuff. And and basically you're gonna prosper.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Well, maybe, but the promise was originally there and that's
- 46:46Speaker 1: where it starts. God might give it to you as
- 46:49Speaker 1: an individual Christian, but to take it and transfer it
- 46:52Speaker 1: to the church in its entirety or to your congregation
- 46:58Speaker 1: if you're a pastor.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Then that's where you cross a line, I think.
- 47:03Speaker 2: And, and aren't they making the very same mistake when
- 47:05Speaker 2: you get into that prosperity doctrine? Is that like, oh,
- 47:08Speaker 2: you know, if you do this, and God's gonna bless
- 47:10Speaker 2: you and give you lots of land and flocks, it's like,
- 47:12Speaker 2: so they, they spiritualize the blessings because none of us
- 47:15Speaker 2: got land in flocks. I mean the majority of us.
- 47:17Speaker 2: So they have no problem to spiritualize what blessings looks like,
- 47:21Speaker 2: but then they claim a promise literally that isn't, you
- 47:24Speaker 2: know what I mean, it's just out of context completely.
- 47:28Speaker 2: And I don't own sheep. I don't have any sheep,
- 47:30Speaker 2: and they wouldn't be a blessing to me in San Diego.
- 47:32Speaker 2: They would not, I would not see in my little
- 47:35Speaker 2: home that having a bunch of sheep would actually be
- 47:38Speaker 2: a blessing.
- 47:39Speaker 2: This is true,
- 47:40Speaker 1: but you could get a goat, and man, they, they
- 47:43Speaker 1: are so fun, you know, the way they run around
- 47:46Speaker 1: and ram people and jump up and down here and
- 47:50Speaker 1: there and everywhere. Goats
- 47:52Speaker 2: are
- 47:53Speaker 1: really
- 47:53Speaker 2: fascinating little.
- 47:56Speaker 2: Pastor Brian wants a goat.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Uh, well, you know,
- 48:00Speaker 2: for his birthday we can get him a goat. OK, perfect.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Amber in Monterey Park watching us on YouTube. Let's wave
- 48:07Speaker 2: hi to Amber. Thanks for calling 888-564-6173. What did you
- 48:12Speaker 2: want to ask?
- 48:15Speaker 2: My question is, I have nieces and nephews that have
- 48:18Speaker 2: gone through just a horrible time in their home.
- 48:22Speaker 2: One of them is really struggling right now because she
- 48:25Speaker 2: has a mom who is really her grandmother that sat
- 48:29Speaker 2: her down and told her that she was gonna give
- 48:32Speaker 2: her away because she was such a bad little girl.
- 48:35Speaker 2: She was already calling residential services when this little girl
- 48:39Speaker 2: is the sweetest girl on the face of the earth.
- 48:42Speaker 2: She has an uncle that told her that it was
- 48:45Speaker 2: her own fault that she got beaten up in mental
- 48:49Speaker 2: health hospital.
- 48:50Speaker 2: And I'm wondering, why does it say in the Bible that, um,
- 48:54Speaker 2: would a parent give their child a stone instead of
- 48:58Speaker 2: an egg or a snake instead of an egg? Why
- 49:01Speaker 2: would this parent basically give the worst kind of stone
- 49:05Speaker 2: or egg to this child when they're supposed to be
- 49:08Speaker 2: the parent? Or how is it that her angels are
- 49:12Speaker 2: protecting her? Cause in Matthew, I think it says something
- 49:16Speaker 2: about a child's angels see the face of God.
- 49:20Speaker 2: So why is this poor child going through this horrific
- 49:24Speaker 2: Maltreatment in her home, um, when I ask God every
- 49:30Speaker 2: single day to protect her, and, um, I have the
- 49:34Speaker 2: oldest daughter living with me, but I'm not able to
- 49:36Speaker 2: take this particular one in just at the moment we're
- 49:40Speaker 2: working on it.
- 49:42Speaker 2: But these children have just been in a horrible home,
- 49:45Speaker 2: and I've been praying for years, decades, actually, and why
- 49:49Speaker 2: can't we seem to get any help or assistance, or,
- 49:53Speaker 2: I've been praying for the mother to change her heart,
- 49:56Speaker 2: and their uncle to change his heart, and to be saved,
- 50:00Speaker 2: and we're supposed to pray.
- 50:02Speaker 2: Um, in God's will, isn't it God's will for them
- 50:06Speaker 2: to be saved when I've been praying for decades for
- 50:09Speaker 2: these abusive people to be saved, and I would also
- 50:14Speaker 2: like a prayer request. Yeah, Amber, how old is your niece?
- 50:19Speaker 2: The particular one I'm talking about is 14.
- 50:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Amber, you know, you've called several times and basically
- 50:26Speaker 1: told us the story over and over again, and I remember,
- 50:31Speaker 1: I think you called maybe last week, and I, I
- 50:34Speaker 1: remember Phil specifically asked you about, you know, what have
- 50:37Speaker 1: you done, and, and you told us about the older, um,
- 50:41Speaker 1: niece that you've taken to, to live with you, uh,
- 50:44Speaker 1: which is wonderful.
- 50:46Speaker 1: And uh but my question is, you know, what are you,
- 50:51Speaker 1: are you calling us and, and repeating this story over
- 50:54Speaker 1: and over again, um, because you just want more people
- 50:58Speaker 1: to pray, uh, with you? I mean, it sounds like
- 51:02Speaker 1: there's always a little bit of a why hasn't God,
- 51:06Speaker 1: you know, and if God said this and you know,
- 51:09Speaker 1: why hasn't he done that, um, but I, my question
- 51:13Speaker 1: to you is what specifically.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Are you calling us regularly telling us the same story for?
- 51:24Speaker 2: Um, I want prayer and I want answers on what
- 51:28Speaker 2: to do, how to do it, because I would love
- 51:31Speaker 2: to take her in at this particular moment. I'm just
- 51:35Speaker 2: not able to right now, but I'm, I'm trying to
- 51:37Speaker 2: work on it.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Um, so I don't know if God, I don't know
- 51:42Speaker 2: what God wants me to do or how to proceed
- 51:45Speaker 2: or what I'm supposed to do because if I report it,
- 51:50Speaker 2: it's their grandmother and she's 70 years old. So do
- 51:53Speaker 2: you report that? Or what do you do in this situation? I.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Literally pray every day. I don't know what to do.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I don't know how to handle it. I'm trying. I used,
- 52:04Speaker 2: I take the kids in to visit with me all
- 52:08Speaker 2: the time as often as possible just to get them
- 52:11Speaker 2: out of the house. So I guess my question is,
- 52:15Speaker 2: I don't know what to do and this has been
- 52:17Speaker 2: going on for so long, and I just want it
- 52:20Speaker 2: to be over and I'm exhausted and I guess I
- 52:23Speaker 2: just need prayer.
- 52:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's.
- 52:28Speaker 1: Exactly what, what we are able to do. We can
- 52:32Speaker 1: pray for you and, and will pray for you. And I,
- 52:36Speaker 1: you know, I think on one level, you know, you
- 52:39Speaker 1: are doing.
- 52:42Speaker 1: You're doing all you can do.
- 52:44Speaker 1: And I, I don't think you have to live under
- 52:49Speaker 1: this weight of somehow you have to solve this. So
- 52:53Speaker 1: you're doing what you can do from a practical standpoint,
- 52:56Speaker 1: you're praying regularly, um, God, even though the circumstances are
- 53:03Speaker 1: not what you hope they will be at some point, uh,
- 53:07Speaker 1: God is still working, um, and I think that there
- 53:12Speaker 1: is a place where you just have to.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Just rest and say, OK, I, I'm doing what I
- 53:17Speaker 1: can do, and you keep praying and you get prayer
- 53:20Speaker 1: like you're doing today and keep trusting the Lord, uh,
- 53:25Speaker 1: you know, we've all seen so many things where we think, God,
- 53:29Speaker 1: this is so wrong and it needs to be righted,
- 53:34Speaker 1: but for whatever reason, God has not seen fit to
- 53:39Speaker 1: write it at this time and this is life in
- 53:42Speaker 1: a fallen world.
- 53:43Speaker 1: And it's just the way it is. One day it'll
- 53:48Speaker 1: all be fixed, and we will all marvel at the,
- 53:52Speaker 1: the wisdom of God. But in the meantime we kind
- 53:56Speaker 1: of scratch our heads sometimes and think, uh, and you know,
- 53:59Speaker 1: the Psalms are full of this. I would say just
- 54:01Speaker 1: camp out in the Psalms because the Psalmist have the
- 54:04Speaker 1: same kind of perplexities that you're experiencing. Lord, why, why
- 54:07Speaker 1: is this happening? If you said this, how is it
- 54:11Speaker 1: that this is going on?
- 54:12Speaker 1: And Lord, we know that you do not delight in
- 54:15Speaker 1: the wicked, but why do the wicked seem to prosper?
- 54:18Speaker 1: How come they seem to always get a break? And
- 54:21Speaker 1: the righteous people, it just seems like all day long
- 54:25Speaker 1: we are suffering and miserable, and you're not delivering us. So, so, Lord,
- 54:33Speaker 1: we do pray again for Amber today. We join.
- 54:36Speaker 1: With her in crying out for these kids, Lord, and
- 54:40Speaker 1: all of this just sounds like so many uh injustices
- 54:44Speaker 1: taking place, so many things that just are not right
- 54:49Speaker 1: with these parents and relatives and God we just pray
- 54:53Speaker 1: for mercy, we pray for deliverance, we pray, Lord, you're
- 54:57Speaker 1: able to be with these kids in a way that
- 55:01Speaker 1: no human can even be with them.
- 55:03Speaker 1: So we just entrust them into your care. Pray that
- 55:07Speaker 1: you would bring about the right thing at the right
- 55:11Speaker 1: time in Jesus' name. Amen.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Amen. Everybody watching and listening is gonna be praying for
- 55:17Speaker 2: your family, Amber. If we had more time, I would
- 55:19Speaker 2: have asked you, what is your hesitation in reporting 70
- 55:23Speaker 2: or 73 year old grandmother, cause I mean,
- 55:27Speaker 2: Come on,
- 55:28Speaker 1: I mean, you know, 70 year old people are plenty
- 55:30Speaker 1: capable of doing bad things and are plenty, uh, accountable
- 55:36Speaker 1: for them.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:37Speaker 2: So maybe I, I don't know. That's just my opinion.
- 55:40Speaker 2: I'm not, I'm, it's just me.
- 55:42Speaker 2: I'm not saying it on behalf of the radio station
- 55:43Speaker 2: or the church or anything, just, but, um, that might
- 55:46Speaker 2: be your next step. I don't know. I don't know,
- 55:50Speaker 2: but we'll be praying for you. God bless you guys.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Thanks for watching and listening to Pastor's Perspective. Thank you, Brian.
- 55:55Speaker 2: Thank you, Phil. Talk to you guys later.
