- 0:32Yes, yes, yes. What's going on, world? This is your man, Buddy Romming,
- 0:35and we are back at it, y'all, with another episode of the Yeah, Buddy podcast.
- 0:40And you know how we do like every episode. I like to bring one of my friends
- 0:44in from the entertainment industry. We sit down, chop it up,
- 0:47see what we got going on in the entertainment business.
- 0:49And this episode is like no other.
- 0:52Man, this time we got my friend coming all the way from the Bay Area.
- 0:55This dude, He's an actor. He's a filmmaker, production assistant, location manager.
- 0:59He's a he's a jack of all trades out here in the Bay Area film industry.
- 1:04So right now, y'all, I want y'all to make it live and make it live.
- 1:06My good friend, Mr. Bobby, you sit up in the building, y'all. I'm here.
- 1:11Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Bobby, man. Thank you for sliding through. Thank you. Yeah, buddy.
- 1:16Podcast, man, for sure, for sure. Appreciate it. Appreciate it.
- 1:18Yeah, man. It's been I think the first time I remember,
- 1:21like, see you on set like connected stuff like that was on the it was like a
- 1:26it was a while ago it was like the the beats by drake commercial yeah dude i
- 1:29was just thinking the same thing yeah because every now and then on my facebook
- 1:33memories that that that picture will pop up and stuff like that do you johnny
- 1:37and then duane and stuff all like that we like yeah go warriors but that was uh.
- 1:41That was the beats by drake commercial we had who was on
- 1:44this it was um kevin durant was there kevin durant was there
- 1:47i i don't know if steph was there i don't think steph was there but
- 1:49i think draymond was there draymond was there yeah draymond was there that
- 1:52was cool commercial sets are are that's like
- 1:56probably the main thing to get like work out here yeah i
- 1:59believe so there's always commercials coming into the bay area
- 2:02and it's like for instance right now
- 2:05you got the nba all-star thing coming up and also
- 2:08the playoffs like there is some stuff coming up for the playoffs i saw the casting
- 2:13going on so it seems like there's a lot of commercials going on either even
- 2:18in just in tech too because there's that's the tech world over in bay area too
- 2:22there's tons of industrial videos and things going on for like salesforce or like.
- 2:28Apple especially apple too yeah yeah yeah yeah a
- 2:32lot of times like people will like especially like
- 2:35actors and stuff like that as we want to be like like be like the big movie
- 2:40star names on the posters and stuff like that but up here in the bay area like
- 2:44the industry is mostly like how will you just like how you just said it's commercial
- 2:49work and then it's like industrial work right.
- 2:55Well i like to say like big movies like they come
- 2:58in once in a while but to really stay in
- 3:01it the industrial commercial is a
- 3:03route to go up here because you'll continuously
- 3:06get work once in a while you know because that's always played
- 3:09out that way with the commercials but i feel like
- 3:12you have to be a jack of all trades to do other
- 3:15things to keep going like if you wanted to
- 3:18pa too or like jump into production that would
- 3:21be a great thing too and then do some acting that's what
- 3:24i kind of do is i do both sides of like
- 3:27acting and then the production to kind of keep
- 3:30the ball rolling if there's no acting going on then i go to production and
- 3:33if there's acting going on and i go back to acting um but
- 3:36i feel like that's just across the board too i know people in la
- 3:39that do the same thing too you know or like
- 3:42have some other side hustle that they do to continue it
- 3:45on i mean if if i mean
- 3:48if the movies ain't coming in right now you just
- 3:51gotta like find something to get you by like do the
- 3:53commercials do the print work do the industrials you know yeah i think especially
- 3:59with being up here in the bay area and in sacramento you definitely kind of
- 4:06have to have that mentality to where under understanding what the market is
- 4:11up here and understanding what the industry is up here.
- 4:13And if you want to make money up here, that's where it's going to be commercial work, industrial work.
- 4:20But if you want to, like how you say, be the movie star or say you get tired
- 4:25of just being on the commercial work and industrial work because you know it
- 4:29pays good, but it's not necessarily going to be something that's going to.
- 4:33Put on your go put on your resume you know totally i
- 4:36mean up here if you wanted to go to la and
- 4:39be on like a network series i mean you could do that too
- 4:42i mean you could just like move there but
- 4:45i mean it's a different vibe of course i mean
- 4:48if you wanted to still stay in the bay area you
- 4:51could just fly down to to la once in a while since it's
- 4:54so close you know it's not too far of
- 4:56a drive or flight to get over there to go do some work
- 4:59too so that's why i like staying in the bay
- 5:02area more than i like staying in la yeah it's because it's so
- 5:05close to go go there if i need to if i have to
- 5:08and then come back and just relax here yeah you know but
- 5:11and do my other work up here when things come along yeah how did you get involved
- 5:16in acting and filmmaking where you were acting first or you more so like pa
- 5:22in first well i got first into acting through my brother And back in 2009,
- 5:28he worked at the Filipino channel and he was a cinematographer.
- 5:32And there was a TV show coming from the Philippines to film in the Bay Area.
- 5:37And he asked me if I wanted to be one of the characters in this show.
- 5:40And I was like, yeah, dude, why not?
- 5:43So I end up being in the show. I robbed this old dude, take his money from the Bible.
- 5:49And I walk up and I'm like, yeah, dude, I just kept that dude.
- 5:53It's funny. It's funny. but after that i
- 5:56i didn't even really think about acting like a couple years
- 5:59went by and i was like oh okay whatever and a
- 6:02buddy of mine i was skateboarding with studio i don't know if he met studio i
- 6:05might have met him a long time ago probably probably
- 6:09a long time ago remember like on looking he was a short dude kind of right on
- 6:13looking which one was that one was that the hbo one that was hbo one oh so i
- 6:18did background on that one for like one day maybe yeah so i'm not sure if I
- 6:24worked with him or not. Yeah.
- 6:26Probably. Yeah. I probably did, but I don't know who he was. Yeah.
- 6:30Anyways, he was looking for extras for HBO for that show, and we were going to be skateboarders.
- 6:37And then I was like, oh, sign me up. I'm down. I'm going to be there.
- 6:41And he signed me. He talked to his agent, I guess, and got us to go be extras as skaters.
- 6:47But they changed it last minute. We become club goers at this bar.
- 6:51Was it a gay club? He was a gay club. Hey, bro. Hey.
- 6:55Hey, man. Finish the story, but we got some stories about that.
- 6:59What was so funny is they made us wear penis necklaces inside this thing.
- 7:04And it was like this bachelor party and we had to scream and get loud.
- 7:08But in that moment i was like this is
- 7:11kind of cool though yeah i mean there's big cameras there's lights
- 7:14i'll be part of this i mean despite that what was
- 7:17going on i was like dude i want to be part of this i like
- 7:20i asked people how do you continue doing this they were like sign up on casting
- 7:24networks and get an agent all these things yeah i just followed along and continued
- 7:30trying to do that and just apply on casting networks and before they had like
- 7:35bobano yeah yeah yeah because Bobineau created casting networks.
- 7:39Is that what it was? I didn't know that. Yeah, Bobineau had created casting
- 7:42networks. So I still think.
- 7:47Bobineau casting is just casting networks now. So he'll still post.
- 7:51Postings will still go through. I'll still see casting on it that says Bobineau
- 7:55casting and stuff like that, but I think it's some other lady that runs it or
- 7:59whatever. So that's what happened.
- 8:01Wait, Bobineau was a good company. How did this happen? He just took over the game.
- 8:08Like casting networks For anybody that doesn't know Casting networks That's
- 8:12where you go to To find work in the Bay Area Well actually no They changed it
- 8:17now To like It's almost like wherever now You can see work like LA,
- 8:20New York Wherever it may be If there's an industry For filming up there There's
- 8:25work being posted But yeah,
- 8:27Boba No changed the game With the casting networks Because it went from Having to like,
- 8:32finding the cast of directors going to the cast of directors to audition it
- 8:35and stuff like that to where it's all online now he just yeah yeah it's a a
- 8:40simpler interface for all of them they just go to one place submit and then
- 8:45you get audition you submit that and it was pretty self,
- 8:49self-sufficient you know yeah yeah but working on um looking because that was
- 8:54funny because that was like one of the first like cast like background jobs
- 8:57that i ever done but like how you say like The way they had posted on casting networks,
- 9:03the way the job was and stuff like that, it was so misleading.
- 9:09Nothing against the LBGT community or anything like that, but it's just the
- 9:13fact that they didn't say that at all the casting.
- 9:16So then I showed up to, I think it was a video game release party or whatever.
- 9:20And I'm like, all right, cool, whatever, stuff like that. But then you start
- 9:22noticing that when they start setting the backgrounds and stuff like that,
- 9:26they start setting all the guys up together.
- 9:27You don't really notice that person like you're just best friends just be best
- 9:30friends together so all right cool whatever so we show all the
- 9:33guys just group together and then next you know they's like okay well
- 9:36you're not like i say what the fetus necklace is yeah all right now put
- 9:39this on we're like what the fuck are we talking about bro then next
- 9:43year you see all these sailors coming with like big buff ass
- 9:45sailors in these tight ass suits and we're like yo what the fuck
- 9:48can we just walk into bro like you make me think
- 9:51like that's why these last minute changed me to go to this bar
- 9:54yeah instead of we probably was all the same thing we probably was
- 9:57all the same stuff i like that i was just like i
- 10:00was like what yeah i didn't know what was
- 10:04going on i was like this is bizarre but
- 10:06i mean it's cool to be on a big set like yeah HBO that's the thing too because
- 10:11it's a HBO show so you're not gonna you're you're just taking it that experience
- 10:14and like how you said it was probably like one of your first times being on
- 10:16like a big set so you don't really understand like so you're just taking it
- 10:19all in and stuff like that but it wasn't it wasn't until went back and like
- 10:22trying to watch the tv show i was like oh.
- 10:33I got to do a couple of the episodes I remember I was like a bodyguard like
- 10:37a club bodyguard or bouncer at one of the clubs yeah that's funny oh my word yeah,
- 10:45yeah but after that like after getting that job I hopped on to Casting at Works
- 10:51and I started applying for other ones and there was like the other murder in
- 10:56the first came for a while with Taye Diggs.
- 10:59I got on a couple episodes on that one, too. That was fun, too.
- 11:06I really wanted to be part of that world after that.
- 11:10I continued to do extra roles as long as I could. Then I tried to get an agent
- 11:15at that time. Couldn't get one, couldn't find one.
- 11:18Then I tried to move to LA.
- 11:21In 2015, I tried to move to LA. It didn't work out. I came back up here.
- 11:25Then I decided to go into production work.
- 11:282018 2017 and when i
- 11:31hit that world it changed for a while it
- 11:34was like okay i'm a pa i'm just going to think about production for
- 11:37a while did that but it kept me
- 11:39in the in the game of of the acting world because like
- 11:42i met like people that were shooting projects and doing
- 11:45things and made me still connect to
- 11:49that community but it was
- 11:52weird because i kept on bouncing back and forth and my focus
- 11:55kept on shifting and from like 2018 to 2020
- 11:58or actually when COVID hit like
- 12:01that's when I really focused on production work and thought maybe I'll just
- 12:04stay in production yeah and then after COVID hit I went back to acting when
- 12:10when production kind of got back up to it and then I just balanced both now
- 12:15I try to do both I mean but my end game is really to be actor.
- 12:20Yeah, no, yeah, of course. How do you find that the balance between saying, okay.
- 12:26Focusing on now being in front of the camera now i'm gonna be like behind the
- 12:30camera is it more like just a like a mental fatigue that you go through you're
- 12:34like all right now i need to just,
- 12:36yeah it's it's a trip because like when i'm on set i don't want to be like too close to the camera,
- 12:43because i know i don't need to really be there and then
- 12:46when it's something like i as an actor that you need to
- 12:48be in front of the camera then i'll go there i'll be there like
- 12:51i i just balance it out like i don't need to be
- 12:54there i won't be there like i just focus on
- 12:57my work like damon damon was
- 13:01matt damon had a video and he was talking about if he could just focus on his
- 13:05work his teacher would just tell him to say just do your work kid so he always
- 13:09relies to that quote that his teacher his theater theater teacher told him was
- 13:13to just do his work so i always remind myself just to do my work that i'm supposed
- 13:17to be doing at that time like just if i'm supposed to be the actor, I'm the actor.
- 13:21If I'm supposed to be the production assistant, be the production assistant. Leave it at that.
- 13:25Unless they pull me in and do something and want me to be the actor at that
- 13:29day or be an extra or whatever. I kind of just separate it.
- 13:33I lock in what I need to do and I just focus on what I got to do. Just do my work, kid.
- 13:40You're one of the people where you're a member of the union with SAG and with
- 13:45the crew because you're a teamster too and stuff like that. Indeed.
- 13:49We'll jump ahead with the Teamsters in a little bit, but right now,
- 13:53because most people want to be a pair of actors and want to join SAG,
- 13:57what was the process like for you becoming SAG eligible and then deciding to,
- 14:05okay, now it's the time for me to join the union?
- 14:08So back in the day like you
- 14:11had to like collect your vouchers well you collect
- 14:14three vouchers a union vouchers and you
- 14:17could join the you the sag after union and you
- 14:20would have to keep the three hard copies and then like mail
- 14:23it in and i still have my hard copies but
- 14:26now it's different you have to be on the website and they they kind of
- 14:29like check you have to check in to see if you're eligible on
- 14:32there so like they send back the the voucher to sag
- 14:35and all that now but like it was hard to really get the three vouchers because
- 14:41like in the bay area there there is some union things going on like with shows
- 14:46and movies and there's only a number a small amount a number of union vouchers
- 14:50that go out sometimes and i remember one time i was working with.
- 14:56Or at San Andreas and they're, they're, they're, you got a story.
- 15:03Yeah. I got a story. Man, we got stories. That's funny, man. Yeah.
- 15:06It was like after an 18 hour day, do you know Lamar Stewart? Yeah.
- 15:11I asked him when we're signing out, are you guys giving union vouchers out?
- 15:15He goes, we did what he said. No, but what he did, he goes, Hey everybody,
- 15:21this guy right here, everybody look at him.
- 15:24He's asking for a union voucher. do you think we're giving out union vouchers
- 15:28today? He just put me on the spot.
- 15:31I was like, I felt hella motivated. I was like, oh, man, you know, I shouldn't have asked.
- 15:35But, like, I was researching about that, and I was like, you should ask sometimes,
- 15:39right? So I asked, and they weren't giving out vouchers. Yeah.
- 15:43But I talked to him, like, recently about that. He was like,
- 15:46dude, you know, that's how it goes, man.
- 15:49When someone asks for vouchers, you're going to have to put them on blast once in a while.
- 15:54But, yeah, that's – I mean, when I got my three vouchers, like it was one was I had to shave my head.
- 16:00And then one was like, I forgot the other one. I think the last one was I had
- 16:05to shave my head to be on set and they gave me a union vouchers.
- 16:08And that was the third one I needed to get to join SAG. And it took like five years to do that.
- 16:13It's like, it takes a while. Like it doesn't happen overnight.
- 16:17You just got to keep like going out and doing all these extra roles to get it.
- 16:23Even like famous people like what's her name Cherijan or Cherijani.
- 16:29What's her name I forgot she's a but she
- 16:32did her three vouchers doing extra roles too and she's a
- 16:35celebrity and she mentions you know just work to get your vouchers and then
- 16:40you could join SAG and then from SAG you know like if you want to join now you
- 16:44could join later it all depends like if there's a lot of SAG work going on then
- 16:50you should definitely join But if there's not,
- 16:53just wait a little bit and stay non-union because a lot of non-union work is around.
- 16:58But I mean, eventually you want to join SAG because if you're wanting to make
- 17:01it big and work on those big projects, you're going to have to make the jump
- 17:05because all the bigger productions are SAG or all union, I mean.
- 17:11Yeah yeah so the funny story i was
- 17:13gonna say about like san andreas and what was his name oh lamar yeah
- 17:17because how you said he wasn't giving out sag vouchers i
- 17:20got my very first sag voucher on san andreas yeah what happened was is is i
- 17:27did the same thing you did except i did it at the beginning of the day and i
- 17:30just asked i was like yo little papa i was like hey is it possible for me to
- 17:32get like a sag voucher or anything like that he's like nope we don't do that
- 17:35up here today, man. I was like, for real? He's like, nope.
- 17:38I was like, alright, shit, man. Whatever.
- 17:41And so now you know, like once you're on, you get breakfast and stuff like this,
- 17:44like laid down period, like just chill or whatever, like you know that actually
- 17:47you don't just sit around and do nothing or whatever.
- 17:49Yeah, so Lamar, he gets up from
- 17:51his boot and he just takes off because somebody needed him or whatever.
- 17:54And I just look at that desk and I walk up and I just snatch one of the sack vouchers off the table.
- 18:02Oh, dude.
- 18:05And I'm over here just looking at it like it's like the golden ticket.
- 18:10Like I just hit the lotto or something like this. I'm like, oh my god.
- 18:13And then another actor walks in and is like, yo, what is that?
- 18:15It's like, it's a SAG voucher.
- 18:17He's like, how'd you get it? I'm like, you stole it.
- 18:24Like they're right over there. And so then he walks over to the table and he
- 18:27gets ready to take it and they're like four or five PAs see him take it.
- 18:31They swarm over to him. Oh, yeah.
- 18:35Put that down i was like oh shit i'm like this is i don't know what the fuck i just did or whatever,
- 18:41and i was just walking around to all the other side actors on set this
- 18:43down like what do i do with this what do i do with this they're like just write
- 18:46th on it and then you'll be good or whatever and they're like and then i see
- 18:51lamar at the end of the day like you know they had union lines and non-union
- 18:53line yeah i slide into the union line and i give him my paper and he's looking
- 19:00and he's looking at the paper.
- 19:02He's looking at my name. Doesn't see my name on the union list and he sees my
- 19:05name on the non-union list and he just looks at me. He's all like,
- 19:08motherfucker it just slides off on
- 19:10it is it to me that's like dude that's
- 19:14a good story i was like oh shit oh
- 19:18my god dude i would never think to still want to do it i think maybe at that
- 19:23time when i was starting like that too i'll probably do that too yeah but now
- 19:27when i look i'm like hell no hell no but back then that desperation kicked it
- 19:32i was like yeah yeah whatever fuck i You got to join SAG.
- 19:35That's what it was about, man. Yeah. You got to join. You got to join.
- 19:39And sometimes it takes some crazy moments to make it happen.
- 19:43Yeah. Yeah. I don't recommend doing that. But yeah, that's how I got my first.
- 19:47So what were the three projects that you worked on to get your vouchers?
- 19:50I think one was the Intrinsic Smile.
- 19:54Do you remember that one? I don't remember. But I mean, I think I remember seeing
- 19:58like a casting for it. But I don't think I got on it. It was like a trippy movie.
- 20:02Not a trippy movie. it was about like freemasonary or
- 20:06the scene that i was in was like freemasonary high
- 20:09upper class party and like elites
- 20:13and at city hall i was like okay whatever it is it sounds pretty cool and i
- 20:18played a waiter i was walking around just giving out drinks and but they gave
- 20:23me a voucher yeah yeah i got on that and then my my first one my first one was
- 20:28damn i can't remember what the first one was.
- 20:32Maybe Ant-Man. Maybe it was Ant-Man.
- 20:35You weren't stuck on the ferry, were you? Or the... Was that the ferry that
- 20:39went out to the ocean or whatever? Oh, yeah.
- 20:40I remember that. They went out and they got stuck and they couldn't come back.
- 20:43They couldn't come back for like...
- 20:44They were stuck out there for like 12 hours or something like that.
- 20:47Like, no lunch, no nothing. Just crap service. Nothing but chips and... Chips Ahoy's.
- 20:5212 hours. Crackers and shit. Yeah.
- 20:55Oh, more almonds. Let me get a handful of almonds. Yeah.
- 21:01I forgot which one I gotta come back to that one I know the last one I had to
- 21:06shave my head to be on behind enemy lines that shot in Alameda on the boat or the military thing,
- 21:15that was the last one I got and then.
- 21:18I was able to join but i waited for like a couple years to
- 21:21join it wasn't until actually i met the stunt
- 21:24stunt actor andrew niece and he
- 21:27was telling man you should just join zag you know
- 21:30you've been waiting this long already and i think
- 21:33you should just make the jump and i think you'll be good at it
- 21:36and i was like all right i'll just join and
- 21:39this is when they had the leonardo dicaprio movie
- 21:42shooting up here in sack okay yeah yeah and i got on
- 21:45to go on to that as bg i was
- 21:47like all right this is cool that's all you've been a union for only like
- 21:51a year okay okay i just joined like i've been
- 21:53sag eligible for like years like maybe seven years okay i just finally yeah
- 21:58yeah yeah that was dried up now all your hopes and dreams washed yeah now you
- 22:10just got to work under the car and shit.
- 22:12I heard people are working non-union in LA and so many of them are doing it
- 22:17that they could get away with that because they can't keep up with all the people working on union.
- 22:23I think that also, and I think that as long as they're paying their SAG dues,
- 22:27it shouldn't really matter. Yeah, exactly.
- 22:28Do something, man. Working slow. Yeah. We got to do something.
- 22:32It's not fair to all of us. Yeah.
- 22:35I hope we're able to do some other stuff at least. Yeah. So you worked on the.
- 22:43Leo DiCaprio movie that was the first project you did officially as a SAG member,
- 22:48how many days did you work on that?
- 22:50Two days that's funny the first day I get the email saying yeah we're going
- 22:56to have you on I'll email you the address where we need to meet,
- 23:00And I didn't get the email at night and I was like, oh, shit,
- 23:03dude, should I just go over there and just figure it out?
- 23:06So I just drove to Sacramento, not knowing where I'm going to go,
- 23:09hoping I'll get the email in the morning.
- 23:11And I sent them emails in the morning and they didn't get back to me.
- 23:15And I was like, I went to set and I was like, hey, do you know where base camp's at?
- 23:19They directed me to where base camp's at and I just go over there.
- 23:22And then once I get over there, I get an email and they're like,
- 23:24oh, you're here, blah, blah, blah.
- 23:26And then I walk in, I'm like, oh, yeah, man. What if I didn't show up?
- 23:30Because I didn't get no confirmation about where I should be going.
- 23:35I was like, oh, man, first day of being having a hard time.
- 23:40It gets better. Once you get the free breakfast, you're like,
- 23:43all right, this is cool. The breakfast was good, though. They had the good food.
- 23:47Did you work it on the set? Did you get to see DiCaprio or any of the actors? I didn't see nobody.
- 23:55What did they have you doing on set? I was the driver. I saw you there the same day.
- 23:59Yeah yeah okay yeah yeah yeah so you're just driving i
- 24:02was just driving okay yeah yeah was it the chase scene or i
- 24:06think it was a chase scene where they're running down the block yeah yeah
- 24:09yeah yeah yeah yeah oh so those are
- 24:12fun though i mean because you're chilling in your car the whole time that's always cool
- 24:15yeah yeah and you get the
- 24:17pay bump too for your car too yeah that's always nice that's
- 24:20always nice yeah i mean any bump
- 24:23is really good yeah they make you smoke cigarettes even though nasty as shit
- 24:27yeah yeah i smoked those motherfuckers like rain yeah right yeah i don't give
- 24:31a fuck yeah i smoke yeah smoke buff whatever it may be those herbal cigarettes
- 24:36taste like shit they're nasty as fuck but 20 bucks i'll take it though yeah it's worth it and then so,
- 24:44Working on, so the other projects that, so all the other like SAG projects that
- 24:48I've seen you working on and stuff like that, you were mostly like locations manager, PA and stuff.
- 24:54I was probably PAing or I was not location manager yet.
- 24:58I just joined location, the union location managing maybe three years ago or two years ago.
- 25:02So I haven't, I've only been on Shang-Chi.
- 25:07No, I did indie projects as a location manager and not a big one yet.
- 25:13Okay but you don't pf because yeah i saw well i went on to
- 25:16imdb yeah something like that but you also worked on you worked
- 25:19on was it the matrix 2 not the mate not matrix 2 but
- 25:21matrix revolution t-o-o-t-o yeah
- 25:25yeah matrix revolution the matrix 4 yeah matrix resurrection resurrection
- 25:28yeah yeah you're on there too aren't you yeah yeah yeah
- 25:31that was it was fine dude what did you feel about that what did you think what
- 25:35did you do on that i was a locations assistant locations okay so me working
- 25:41background on it it was like it was such a surreal experience it felt like the
- 25:46first time like i don't know how to describe it but like like i felt like i was
- 25:50in a movie if that makes any sense y'all like i
- 25:53know i'm on the move like i know like i'm in the movie but
- 25:56like like working on that movie it felt like the first time i was like like i'm
- 25:59on the movie like it was like this was like a surreal experience type of
- 26:02thing because like once they found out where we was
- 26:05filming at you had like they had a they had a rope off everything
- 26:08people it's just three thousand like three hundred people outside
- 26:11just cheer like yeah they had crowds like
- 26:14literally like and every corner they had signs too they're like keanu i love
- 26:19you and like even at one point we had to close like a building because so many
- 26:25people wanted to rush in to see keanu like it it was like a movie movie like
- 26:29how you explain it yeah like i didn't it was wild it It was wild.
- 26:34And it's like getting off the bus or whatever.
- 26:38People, they don't know who is who. You know what I'm saying?
- 26:40As far as they could be looking at us and be like, oh, that's the actor next
- 26:44to Keanu Reeves or whoever it may be.
- 26:46So they're treating you just like a movie star too as well.
- 26:50The exact same love that they show with Keanu Reeves. They're looking at you
- 26:53like, oh, I want a picture with you. Yeah, they'll take a picture with you.
- 26:55Like, you're not going to see me.
- 26:57No, trust me. The most you're going to see is the back of this head. But I appreciate it.
- 27:01It's the love man that they give the love they have the love and appreciation
- 27:04it's all like man like the movie may have sucked but it wasn't the greatest
- 27:09it wasn't the greatest my bad,
- 27:11maybe if they gave me a line or two but like the the just the fact that so many people was like i'm,
- 27:18Like, that was the first time I felt I seen the scope of what filmmaking was.
- 27:23Did you get to see it in the stunts or the explosion? Oh my god, yeah. Because I did.
- 27:28So, the one scene I did, it was like a lot of the office scene where we was
- 27:32like up on like the 28th story of the building or whatever it may be and shit.
- 27:36I was like, yeah, why the fuck are we so high up here and shit?
- 27:38Like, we could just green screen this shit. Like, we were so high up,
- 27:42they had to build an office building on top of like the other office buildings
- 27:45and stuff like that because like the building was like completely the floor was completely empty.
- 27:50That's how far separated it was for all the rest of the businesses.
- 27:54I'm like, why the fuck are we so high up right now? This don't make no sense.
- 27:59With the stunts, the whole third act of the movie where they're chasing him
- 28:03on the motorcycle and all that type of jazz.
- 28:05All the people is running after him. They're chasing after him.
- 28:08I was there all those nights.
- 28:11I knew up to you, man. It was fucked, dude.
- 28:16Oh, my word. it was so overnight those overnights
- 28:19was horrible i did like maybe like the first night like
- 28:22i was like and then after that i was like you know what man like it was
- 28:25funny because like we would be like having us just running
- 28:28down the street or whatever like chase after all right you know back to set
- 28:31now back to one and then running chasing after him again all right y'all back
- 28:34to what chasing after him back to what i was like god damn after like the first
- 28:37the third time i was all like i booked it and i made a left and i just ran down
- 28:44this alleyway i just pulled out this and I was just fucking smoking shit.
- 28:47I was just looking at them like, man, that can't be me right now.
- 28:53And then they're like, all right, y'all, we're going to sign up for the next
- 28:55thing. Y'all go back to Holden or whatever. The second they can clear Holden, I'll put that blood out.
- 29:00Like, I did something. Oh, that was tiring, y'all. That was...
- 29:04No matter having to run so many times yeah
- 29:07that dude i could feel like yeah it was like brutal
- 29:11and they didn't really tell people that they
- 29:13have people dressed up like some people are dressed up like in like like they're
- 29:18like stuff that they go to sleep in and stuff like that like philip was i didn't
- 29:23want to say his name but like oh my god i felt so bad yeah he was in his like
- 29:27underwear almost pretty yeah he was in his underwear in a robe he was in his underwear,
- 29:31a white feeter, and a robe from 6 o'clock at night to 6 o'clock in the morning in San Francisco.
- 29:39The Bay, like, it's just freezing cold. And this is in January.
- 29:43No, in February. In February.
- 29:46So it's still cold. Up in February, man. And he's over doing this for 12 nights.
- 29:5012 nights in a row. And he's, like, committed.
- 29:54It's like, Phil, you're not even sad here, bro. Just go home.
- 29:57Yeah, just go home. No, don't give up, but just go on the phone.
- 30:01They're torturing you right now, bro.
- 30:04It was... Oh, yeah. And then the stunts. The stunts was horrible, too, because.
- 30:11The Wachowski lady, she kept switching up.
- 30:14Well, I don't know. Maybe you could speak on as far as locations,
- 30:17how it was trying to manage the locations, because I just felt like she kept
- 30:20switching up, like what Cesar was going to do and all that type of stuff.
- 30:23But for the most part, well, that third act we were chasing,
- 30:26that took place on the same highway, or that same street anyways and stuff all like that.
- 30:30Yeah, Montgomery or like one of those streets.
- 30:33Yeah, but like she had switched up like one of the stunts that they was going
- 30:38to do for the day, so I'm going to just do something completely different.
- 30:41And they wasn't like prepared for that or whatever, so they had to just create
- 30:45like a contraption out of like,
- 30:47just whatever they could make it out of and shit like that so it was supposed to be like
- 30:51like keanu was on his motorcycle where he's like dudes like powers were
- 30:54like you know what i'm saying it was supposed to like and they get yanked back
- 30:57yeah yeah did you see that were you there there was someone that got injured yeah
- 31:00he did i saw that man it was horrible like it was supposed to that stuff was
- 31:03supposed to yank him back and then like just like he's like oh you know but
- 31:08like what happened was instead of yanking him well first off i don't know why
- 31:11they there was no mat anyways for him to land on but like that's dangerous already
- 31:15it was dangerous already because this it on the street.
- 31:18So instead of shooting him backwards, it shot him straight up.
- 31:21Oh. Fuck. It shot him straight up. He went...
- 31:25And then he went... They shot him up maybe like 20 feet up in the air or something like that.
- 31:29And then he just went smack, right down on his head, right on the fucking concrete.
- 31:34Now cold and shit. And then what happened was the stunt coordinator,
- 31:39he comes all running through like, oh my God, what's going on? What's going on?
- 31:43And he looks and he sees the dude or whatever. And I guess what happened was
- 31:47is the stunt person who got knocked out cold that was the stunt coordinator's son.
- 31:53Oh shoot. He had the one who set up the whole stunt or whatever.
- 31:56So now he looks at he sees his son knocked out cold or whatever so that he passes out.
- 32:01So now they got to call another ambulance but the other people they're like
- 32:05oh we need another one. So there was back to back.
- 32:09But the dude was back on set like the next day he had
- 32:12a lump on his head or whatever but he was like yeah it's all
- 32:15right let's get back to work man i'm brave
- 32:18man yeah what was your experience like working on the matrix i'm
- 32:21kind of biased like what i'm not biased oh in
- 32:24a sense i am just because i won an award on that
- 32:28a team in a award oh we all we all won
- 32:30that though but there was also some negatives also
- 32:34on that job but it's like i got
- 32:37hit in the face i got punched in the face actually oh shit there's there's
- 32:41a thing called lockups where pas and who are
- 32:44pas or us location assistants go to
- 32:47a corner and we don't allow anyone to walk on set we
- 32:50block out the the the public and so there's
- 32:53these rollerbladers coming down the street somehow they got through us and they
- 32:57went almost to set and they're causing ruckus and then they leave and they came
- 33:01to us and i try to stop them and next thing you know he swings and punches me
- 33:06in the face oh shit and i'm like what the fuck And I'm like,
- 33:09what's up, dude? I'm about to kick your ass.
- 33:11And then I held back and I was like, no, I can't. I just don't want to do it.
- 33:16And after that, the police came and was like, do you want to do anything with
- 33:19these guys? Do you want to take them to court? I was like, dude,
- 33:21I don't want to go to court, man.
- 33:23It's like, I got work. I got all this. And so I just was like,
- 33:27let's let them go. It's kind of one of those. Let me just punch him in the chest one time. Yeah.
- 33:31Yeah. I want him one of those. Let me get an even. Yeah. Yeah.
- 33:34Just hold him like this for me one time. I'm going to kick him in the ass. Yeah. yeah.
- 33:39But yeah, that's what happened on one of the nights. I mean,
- 33:43it was a tough job, too, because the nights were just like, it was days and nights, both.
- 33:49And it was cool at the end, though. We had a wrap party, kind of.
- 33:54One of the PAs, her parents owned Vesuvio's, the bar over in North Beach.
- 34:00And we went to North Beach after, and we opened the bar at 6 a.m.
- 34:03In the morning, and we all got drunk and shit.
- 34:05And after it was done, we all just got wasted.
- 34:11One thing about the film crews and stuff like that is rap parties.
- 34:15Rap parties are always a good time. Yeah, it's always a good time.
- 34:19You celebrate your wins with this party and you put everything into it and you end it on a good note.
- 34:27Yeah, and it's weird because that's one of the only times where you literally
- 34:29will see everybody who worked on that film set in the same room.
- 34:34The people who do the clerical work to the PA to the A-list actors.
- 34:40What the hell is everybody doing here, man? Yeah.
- 34:43The official, actually, Vucemia was a crew kind of party we had,
- 34:47but the official wrap party for The Matrix was at this other bar in,
- 34:51the mission and keanu was there the which
- 34:55which is hockey was there and everyone was there
- 34:57it was cool just the vibe in this place and like they
- 35:00had like free weed and all this
- 35:03stuff that was going on i bet there's a
- 35:06lot of free alcohol and yeah but
- 35:11that was probably one of the coolest rap parties i've been to yeah one
- 35:14thing i will say though about like working like
- 35:18with these um because whenever like these big time movie studios come up here
- 35:22to like work up in the Bay Area there's always like a select number of crew
- 35:26that they bring up from like LA to like work with them and stuff like that well
- 35:30them guys is assholes yeah dude we're different vibes in different LA when you
- 35:34said that somebody punched you I thought you was going to say somebody from LA did it.
- 35:39I wouldn't be surprised I'm like yeah yeah we both got that it's definitely
- 35:45a different vibe and stuff like
- 35:47they're like it's you could tell that like down there in LA there's such,
- 35:52so competitive up there just.
- 35:56So competitive up here like up here it's competitive but it's still community,
- 36:01so we're up here helping each other out and stuff like that they may do the
- 36:04same thing but instead of calling you by your name they just may call you asshole,
- 36:09yeah yeah yeah get your ass over here like no no I'm sorry that's not your name
- 36:16my best it's whatever but today your name is asshole for now for today your
- 36:20name is asshole i'll learn your real name,
- 36:22never mind i'm not gonna learn your real name it's just asking just asshole
- 36:25for today yeah yeah dude like comparing the
- 36:29crews in la and bay air i felt
- 36:32like when i worked in la as a crew member i felt
- 36:35like i was either getting backstabbed or someone was trying to just outdo me
- 36:41try to be really competitive and try to do things better than i was in the bay
- 36:46area it's like no we all work together we we you know we're a team you know
- 36:51we're a community we all help each other out,
- 36:55la is just very competitive i guess you know it's just the way it is i mean
- 36:59it's i guess that's how it has to be it's there's the shows there the movies
- 37:04being constantly shot yeah there's,
- 37:07there's just so much work up there
- 37:08to where it's like yeah you got to be competitive up here we're Like,
- 37:11whatever project's coming on, we just got to be lucky enough to get on that shit.
- 37:14Like, whatever we got to do to get this shit done, man, let's get this done
- 37:18as a team or whatever. Yeah.
- 37:20So that's always fun and stuff like that. What other...
- 37:24Jobs have you worked on as a PA?
- 37:27Well, yeah, as a PA. Then after that, talk about what's the process like joining
- 37:33the teamsters, like the process of joining the union.
- 37:36So a couple movies I worked on as a PA was Shang-Chi, a locations PA.
- 37:43And then Obi-Wan Kenobi, I was a PA, but also a locations PA. I was in LA.
- 37:51And then other numerous jobs where I was just a PA on commercials and all that.
- 37:55But how I first got into PA was through a friend of mine that I met at an award show.
- 38:01And his buddy was a PA. And I asked him if I could be a PA. And shout out to
- 38:06Jabari. I mean, you're a good dude, man. You got me my first job.
- 38:09You got me on this paid job. And I remember my first day on that job,
- 38:13I was like, what do I do? How do I do that? I was like, confused.
- 38:17When he was calling out the rolls, like, hey, cut.
- 38:21It's rolling. like i was like am i supposed to say that too and i was like i'm
- 38:25kind of shy i don't want to say,
- 38:27but eventually i ended up starting to do that and i
- 38:30remember also shout out to greg sumner i
- 38:33tell i tell you this story all the time he's the one that was a
- 38:36producer and i drove a truck or i
- 38:39didn't drive a truck but someone else did and i had to take
- 38:42out the the skid marks on the on the driveway so
- 38:46greg got me told me to go get some sandpaper home
- 38:49depot and scrape out all the tire marks on the
- 38:52on the driveway and i had to do that all day to get
- 38:55those out it was it's probably like a funny thing but it showed how much work
- 39:00i would put into being a pa like i'm down to be here let me i'll get this out
- 39:05whatever you need me to do and that's how you got to go about it as a pa you
- 39:09just gotta get the job done yeah you know it's okay like in between all that.
- 39:14A good attitude you know be ready be
- 39:17a listener be friendly be kind to everyone help anyone
- 39:21that needs help and you know just be
- 39:23a helping hand really on set yeah pa slash
- 39:27production assistant is probably the least glamorous job yeah there is on on
- 39:35a film set but like y'all i kind of like the back like i don't want to call
- 39:39it like the ants you don't say but like the working ass where y'all or all these
- 39:42moving parts and stuff like that people don't understand.
- 39:46That's making this whole thing go on.
- 39:48And sometimes production assistants, not even all production assistants will
- 39:50get even a credit in the film, you know what I'm saying?
- 39:53But y'all play major parts, especially with you doing locations.
- 40:00Break that down and what that means to be locations PA.
- 40:04For locations PA, so you deal with all the work that all the location managers
- 40:11don't need deal with, like putting the tables up, putting the chairs, putting cones out.
- 40:16If you have to do a lockup, you do a lockup. All depends on the situation.
- 40:22On Obi-Wan Kenobi, we brought tents through this forest and just brought them
- 40:26back and forth, tables and chairs.
- 40:29It's the heavy duty work that the location manager or assistant location manager doesn't do.
- 40:35It's basically just It's a PA, but you're attached to a department.
- 40:39It's almost like you're a camera PA and you do everything for camera.
- 40:43But for locations, you're a location PA and you do everything for the location department.
- 40:48So it's like maybe it could be office work or go get a sign printed or whatever it may be.
- 40:54It could be a bunch of different things, but it all deals with the location's,
- 40:58And I don't know, like, I had a great time doing locations PA stuff too. So I really enjoyed it.
- 41:04Like my time, like being there and then growing into a location manager.
- 41:08Like I kind of like had this idea that that's what I wanted to do was when I
- 41:12first heard about locations and what they do, I was like, Oh, I'll do that.
- 41:15You know, I'll just, I'll just go for that. You know, at first I was like,
- 41:20camera, should I be a camera guy?
- 41:21And I was like, I don't want to be on set all the time like that.
- 41:24At least with locations, you could kind of disappear into it. Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:28You need a little bit of break the down time and stuff like that.
- 41:30There's not as much pressure working with the director, the AD,
- 41:35all the actors, stuff like that.
- 41:37I just set this code and I chill. Yeah, that's all it is. I just put the tent
- 41:40up and instead I'll just go back to the corner to go sit there for a while.
- 41:44Because I'm already being an actor. I don't need to shine in the production
- 41:48world, man. That's their thing. They'll do that.
- 41:51I don't need to take the cake like that. I'm alright with where I'm at.
- 41:55As long as I get a paycheck and I can pursue my acting with that.
- 41:58Yeah, that's what's up. So that was an interesting thing you pointed out when
- 42:03you were talking about, okay, I've been working as a PA, but then choosing to
- 42:08go pursue the locations department as opposed to camera department, things like that.
- 42:13A lot of people may not understand that being a production assistant is almost
- 42:20as good as going to film school.
- 42:22You know because well it's a job in the
- 42:24film and then once you once
- 42:27you gain the trust of the other crew members now you
- 42:31can choose where you want to
- 42:34like what direction you want to take your career because unlike
- 42:38other jobs like this isn't this
- 42:40isn't something we're like oh i'm gonna go do a job interview fill
- 42:43out an application yeah fill this out it's really referral
- 42:47based and reputation based definitely referral
- 42:50based reputation based how they see you if you're friendly good
- 42:53kind all those things they take account for and and
- 42:57your reputation kind of leads you to where you want to go
- 42:59you know people hear about you and they hear your name and that
- 43:02was one of the reasons why i got into pa too is like like when
- 43:05i worked in i worked for free to get my name out so
- 43:09i can meet people to hear my name yeah and so and
- 43:12my work that ethic i thought was good so i just continued doing
- 43:15that and then i i figured out i met people
- 43:18in locations and they led they taught
- 43:21me all these things about locations and i just went with that way but i mean
- 43:24you could go any way like you could talk to like the ac you could talk to the
- 43:27grip department and they'll be happy to help you i mean here in the bay area
- 43:31yeah you know i don't know how la could be so but in the bay area i mean everyone's
- 43:36pretty helpful about wanting to help you pursue your dreams.
- 43:41But it really relies on, you know, being a good dude, good woman or whoever,
- 43:45and just, you know, standing out a little bit and make sure you get your work
- 43:49done, be a good person, all those things, all those above. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:54Because what they had, like you say, up here, the Bay Area is a great stepping stone.
- 44:00Like if you want to go down to LA to get to build up your resume build up all
- 44:06the credentials that you do need like if you want to be be member of SAG and
- 44:11stuff all like that the opportunities,
- 44:13up here like you can get it it's easier to get your SAG card up here yeah than
- 44:19it is down in LA now like that's up to us as the actor to like strip our ego
- 44:24and understand that we may not get our SAG card from,
- 44:28you know being like being the you know the top of the list you know like oh
- 44:33I just auditioned for the newest Star Wars film now you know I'm all this and
- 44:36stuff all like that TV show or whatever it may be you know that's how it is
- 44:42up here you're going to get your SAG card from doing background work but because there's such little.
- 44:48Competition up here as far as like SAG goes like you can easily get
- 44:52your SAG card on like with 13 Reasons
- 44:55Why I was filming up here for four seasons like like i
- 44:58mean like that's a gold mine up there yeah they're
- 45:01giving out sad life what are you talking about
- 45:04because at first there wasn't at first i heard they wasn't trying to do that at
- 45:06first they was trying to keep everybody like non-union but they're like
- 45:09once you found out the benefits like what's going on like no yeah you gotta
- 45:12run that up here that's four seasons that's 13 episodes i'm like yeah that's
- 45:18that is work right there man that is that's automatic right there if you just
- 45:22show up that's the way you gotta do that's it that's it just show You get the
- 45:26voucher, and then you could join SAG.
- 45:28It is easier to join up here because there's not a big crowd of SAG actors up here.
- 45:34Especially when it comes to minorities and stuff, all like that.
- 45:38I wouldn't doubt that there's a lot of SAG work that I just got because we just need a black person.
- 45:44I'd be looking around these back, like I'd go onto these sets,
- 45:47and I'd be looking around, I'd be counting the black people that I'd be seeing.
- 45:50I'm like, I see why I got hired.
- 45:53It's like a further action yeah i'm like i must be the safe black guy okay,
- 45:59all right whatever i guess i'll take this job i would see the same folks too
- 46:04yeah i see timothy yeah i see the way it's the it's the same it'd be the same.
- 46:14Like and we know what we know we go we're gonna see at least
- 46:17one of us on set like you know it's just it's the
- 46:20same that sounds like it's easier for us to get it up there without having to
- 46:23worry about the the competition factor we just look at that like yeah yeah which
- 46:28one of y'all is the standard today which one of y'all is the standard man all
- 46:31right do your thing for real which speaking of which man shout out to uh tim
- 46:36johnny and uh edwayne and shit like that yeah what's up y'all yeah,
- 46:40And then, so with, like I said, it being easier up here to get like sad work,
- 46:46you feel like that's the same thing with you doing like PA and like joining the Teamsters?
- 46:51Like it's easy. Like do you think it's, was it easy for you to find work up
- 46:55here like doing PA work in the Bay Area or LA?
- 46:59I think it was easier for me to get PA work up here.
- 47:03I had a network. I still do of like people that I just communicate with still.
- 47:10And i mean you get past jobs and
- 47:13that's how it works you you know someone can't work this job so
- 47:16they say hey you get a call or a text whatever we need somebody to work this
- 47:20job you know and there's like groups too on facebook you can get jobs on important
- 47:24too those are helpful but i felt it was easier to do it up here when i went
- 47:29to la to try to do it i had to restart a network and try to make everybody and try to get that going.
- 47:37But as far as joining Teamsters, it was hard. Like...
- 47:43Usually you get like a recommendation from like three people and they,
- 47:47then they call the office, but I kind of worked up pretty quickly.
- 47:51And I think I might get like some slap, like a little bit of heat from that
- 47:55because I kind of moved quickly to join.
- 47:57Yeah. But I think it was based on because I location managed Fremont movie that
- 48:03came out in Sundance and I did a pretty good job at it.
- 48:07And I think that kind of opened the door for me to join the Teamsters at that time.
- 48:12So I kind of earned my way in and I think I did a hell of a good job on that movie.
- 48:17So I mean after getting Teamsters it was kind of tough waiting for work because
- 48:22you know I'm still new and I mean people in commercial world doesn't know who
- 48:26I am yet and big movies they don't know who I am yet some of them do but no,
- 48:33I just gotta stay around and hopefully it'll work out.
- 48:37Yeah I feel like that's the same kind of hurdle that you go through like when
- 48:40you join the union because like you I feel like there's some sort of,
- 48:43there's like this momentum that goes into it with the non-union work that you're doing.
- 48:47I know before I was doing that, I was constantly either doing all the short
- 48:51films or whatever projects it was I was doing.
- 48:53I was either the lead, the co-star, whatever it may be, stuff like that,
- 48:57that kind of built that momentum up for me to be like, all right,
- 49:00cool, let me go now enjoy the union and stuff. I'm like, man, I got that confidence.
- 49:05But then you go with it, you join, and now you're doing these auditions and
- 49:08that confidence is still there, but now you're looking at it,
- 49:10And I'm all like, I'm over like, shit, man, I'm over auditioning it for the
- 49:13same person I was just the stand-in for.
- 49:16I was like, it was a whole different ballgame, man. I was all like,
- 49:20so it's definitely like I.
- 49:21Did it feel like more pressure towards you since you had to do more auditions and all this?
- 49:27No, the pressure didn't come from having to do more auditions.
- 49:30The pressure came from having less auditions now because it was because like the work had dried up.
- 49:36And my folks were solely on like, OK, you need work, you need work, you need work.
- 49:40But because there was such little union working, like, even with that,
- 49:44like, the auditions that did come up here, like, they only really came up here
- 49:49because there was an obligation for them to have an audition for these roles and stuff like that.
- 49:54But then realize that those roles are still kind of already delegated to maybe,
- 49:59like, a certain actor, you know. Yeah, they already premeditated, kind of, had their idea.
- 50:03Yeah, had their idea of, like, who they want. Like, I mean, that's just that
- 50:06audition process in general.
- 50:07Like going in and going into the audition knowing
- 50:11that they don't want you like they already have somebody else
- 50:14yeah i feel that man i feel like am i really doing anything here am i supposed
- 50:19to be auditioning or should i just pass on it yeah but no we gotta audition
- 50:23we gotta that that's the struggle but no yeah we gotta we gotta audition but
- 50:27that's that was the one thing that i did take away from like what i did join the uni was just,
- 50:32Just like I said, it's a different ballgame now because I even just auditioned
- 50:37for, what was it? Like, oh, all day of the night or whatever.
- 50:42The Netflix audition, you know, all day of the night or whatever.
- 50:44But then, like, when you look at it, you audition.
- 50:47You're like, fuck, even if you kill the audition, you look at the person who
- 50:50got the job, and I'm like, oh, this is the Duke of Snowfall. Like, fuck.
- 50:55That's somewhere away above. Somewhere above, yeah. But I guess I'll be here
- 50:58standing. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I'll stand and do it. I'll be there. Yeah.
- 51:02Might as well i mean i i
- 51:05i that tendance there's a ted danson show that
- 51:08came up this bay area and i got an audition for a
- 51:11role and i didn't get it but i saw who
- 51:14got it it was like this white dude i was like dude i'm totally completely different
- 51:17from what he looks like yeah so they kind of had it probably a
- 51:20white dude in mind the ted danson show that was yeah i
- 51:23know exactly what you're talking about too yeah but i want to yeah yeah
- 51:27yeah it's probably the same role yeah yeah like the the peaches the
- 51:30which one was it the peaches you had to talk about the peaches i think so
- 51:33like the yeah i think i think that's what it was yeah because you're like a
- 51:37food vendor or something like that yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah they just took everybody
- 51:42everybody we're gonna go with we're just gonna go with billy yeah let's yeah
- 51:49let's just go with jeff we don't we don't want no dominique.
- 51:55Oh man yeah and then so let's uh
- 51:58let's get into it man this is a portion of the show i like to call
- 52:01it the the mount rushmore the four
- 52:08top pa gigs i did yeah so
- 52:11the mount rushmore mount rushmore is a game that we play every episode
- 52:14with our guests it's where you do like i said your top
- 52:17four uh some subject that i gave gave you ahead of time you know sometimes i
- 52:21don't do that to me sometimes i just surprise them on the spot they're like
- 52:24fuck now yeah but i'll give you so yeah so we're gonna do your top four productions
- 52:32that you worked on first one i want to say,
- 52:35i talked about earlier is matrix that's because the stunts and the and the explosion
- 52:41scenes on that movie was amazing to be part of and you know it was just the
- 52:47matrix you know you thought it was and be like this big movie,
- 52:50even though it didn't blow up.
- 52:51But, you know, we had our idea about what it was going to be like,
- 52:55too, but it didn't happen. But, I mean, it was a great movie.
- 52:58Second one, Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi was cool to work on. That's what Simu Lee or
- 53:04whatever the guy's name is.
- 53:05That was in San Francisco, a little bit of it. Some of it was shot in Australia,
- 53:09but that was a really cool movie to work on to see the muni bus crashing to
- 53:14the side of these cars over by Fisherman's Wharf.
- 53:18What else? Dead Wrong was a movie I worked in LA with and that had Rob Schneider.
- 53:26And that was really cool because I got to talk to him a little bit and be a funny dude.
- 53:31And my last one would probably be Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- 53:37Actually, probably in a scale from one to two or one to four,
- 53:43I think number two would be Obi-Wan Kenobi and then three Shang-Chi and then four Dead Wrong.
- 53:48Okay cool so let's get into it let's debate it so the
- 53:52first thing i would say the the two things about the interesting about matrix
- 53:554 and then shang chi is that matrix 4 was like the very last production that
- 54:01they started before the pandemic happened yeah shang chi was like the very first
- 54:07one yeah and it was i didn't work on shang chi but like for a reason you know I was like, I had that,
- 54:13but like, it was two totally,
- 54:17different like, vibes and energy, like, but we was on the Matrix and it was
- 54:23literally like the second they finished rapping, like,
- 54:26last day of filming the next day San Francisco went on the whole lockdown with
- 54:31the coronavirus and everything like that so if they had had to push anything
- 54:35back any further, that production would have been screwed.
- 54:38Yeah, dude, a lot of money would have been lost and all that shit i mean
- 54:42it ended right when that movie was done and
- 54:45then i was hearing things about china and shit while we're on
- 54:48that and that was the thing too because we was like there's like 300
- 54:51of us on set and we're just stuffed in this this
- 54:53room and we're all and that's all that's going on is everybody's just
- 54:56panicking like and this is back when everybody thinking like bumper's gonna
- 54:59turn into zombies and like that and i felt bad it was racist but there was this
- 55:05one there's this one asian dude like in the middle of us and he just came to
- 55:10set one day just hella sick and he just started coughing he's like he's like.
- 55:18He brought it over here get him out of here yeah get this dude out of here but
- 55:24um the one thing that i the matrix for that didn't talk about we talk about
- 55:28it now and stuff like that was,
- 55:31what was i about to say oh yeah that wasn't
- 55:35like would they talk about like celebrities and like you know like they talk
- 55:39about like like keanu reeves kind of has that reputation for being like a good
- 55:43guy just a real cool down to a dude yeah like if you'd ever seen like keanu
- 55:47like like on the set like interacting with people like it's true yeah it's true as like he was like,
- 55:54walk over to like the like the extras like because i i had met him in the bathroom
- 55:58and shit and like super awkward like because he was like because like they had
- 56:02finished filming a scene or whatever and he's just walking up to the like the
- 56:05other extras and he's very much like his um his bill and ted type of personality
- 56:09shit like they he's like hey man where's the bathroom you know,
- 56:14and then all the other extras I'm looking like it was Keanu Reeves talking to
- 56:18us like oh my god they're like it's that way it's that way and then like he
- 56:22was walking into the bathroom as I was like walking out of the bathroom I just
- 56:24opened the door like what the fuck face to face he's all like hello.
- 56:31I gotta use the bathroom,
- 56:35you should have closed the door I was like no too late it was Occupado no but
- 56:40I just walked down like yo what the fuck this happened man but then like the
- 56:45thing was is like when we was filming all the stunt scenes and stuff all like that.
- 56:50Whenever the camera's like facing Keanu on him and stuff all like that he always do like that
- 56:56that like you know use like his powers or whatever like that like he's in character
- 56:59stuff like that he's all you know what i mean or whatever but they're like when
- 57:04they did like from the opposite angle like and it's like the camera's like behind
- 57:08him or whatever yeah this fool's just he's still doing the action but he's just
- 57:11laughing and he's just getting he's like,
- 57:13oh my god yeah like he's a fucking kid or whatever i was like oh what the fuck like it kind of like,
- 57:21made you like i said give you that that motivation
- 57:24or like inspiration just lets you know that like oh not everybody's an
- 57:27asshole or like like this is work but like we
- 57:30can have fun with this type of yeah don't take it too serious yeah don't
- 57:33take it too like if he's not taking this serious he's number
- 57:36one he's number one he's over here laughing having a
- 57:39good time like he's a like he's a kid in a toy store
- 57:41or whatever come on man we we kids then yeah dude
- 57:45i i feel like keanu rius is that dude that
- 57:48is just a good guy all around man like on
- 57:51set he does his thing but he also helps out
- 57:54the crew too you know there's even videos of him carrying like equipment upstairs
- 57:59for the crew yeah you know he's just a good dude all around man yeah it's like
- 58:04where's the coffee you guys want some coffee you want some coffee it's like
- 58:08yo keanu bro it's cool man just do your thing bro,
- 58:13just go act man.
- 58:16By the way get me some toilet paper yeah.
- 58:22And then and then you had did Shang-Chi and like I said that was the very first
- 58:29production that happened coming out of the pandemic and for anybody that doesn't
- 58:34understand like what it was like,
- 58:37filming a movie during the pandemic bro like well coming out of the quarantine
- 58:42where they probably lifted everything and like having to get the COVID test
- 58:46and everything like that like COVID test before shooting,
- 58:50COVID test after shooting like we was getting COVID tests like three times a
- 58:54day on a set. That's true.
- 58:55Like man so what was that experience like now like back from set like and like,
- 59:01bagged lunches and whole bunches.
- 59:03Yeah the lunches were different before it was like
- 59:06a buffet for sure and you get to eat like open food
- 59:09but it was like more packaged and shit like that but like
- 59:12going back when covid was going on we
- 59:16had to take covid tests like throughout the day like three times you
- 59:18know because like actually on on
- 59:22chang chi someone caught covid and we we ended
- 59:25up going home for the day and then they called us back in to take covid tests
- 59:29and then they told us to go away and then wait until the results come in and
- 59:35they didn't know how to plan this out like when do we come back to set set the
- 59:38shoot again yeah so it was all new things going on and how to,
- 59:43go through it all.
- 59:45We eventually came back to shooting, but it was more strict.
- 59:48We kept each department very...
- 59:52They called it zones and stuff all like that. It was just...
- 59:56That was the first time I tried to go back to working movie sets during COVID.
- 1:00:03That really made you question, do I love making movies?
- 1:00:07Is it worth like me going out to kill myself. Yeah, because like it was like,
- 1:00:12because it's still the long work times.
- 1:00:14It's still like the same thing, but like all the good things that you went into, like expected,
- 1:00:20like craft service like the little things that you took for granted like
- 1:00:24craft service just being able to walk up to craft service and like grab grab
- 1:00:26a pack of oreos and then walk away and just snack on it
- 1:00:29yeah to where it's all like my brother's got like a tarp
- 1:00:32over it and like they're over sliding through the things like
- 1:00:35one at a time and all this type like having to people have to
- 1:00:37hand you food and how you say like the lunches were
- 1:00:40no longer like you just grab what you want yeah bag
- 1:00:44lunches and everything was cold and it was just it
- 1:00:47was like man this is like everyone's wearing masks too i
- 1:00:50mean everyone was concerned about catching it you know
- 1:00:53at that time it was very scary yeah i mean shoot
- 1:00:56i mean yeah and everybody's on edge nobody really wants to talk nobody talk
- 1:01:00to each other yeah very anti-social it was like that was the first i felt like
- 1:01:05i was like at a job like you know what i mean like you don't look like that
- 1:01:08that that that vibe that you get when you're at job like damn i'm at work right
- 1:01:11now yeah it felt like Like,
- 1:01:14I'm at work now. I'm at work. Damn.
- 1:01:17What are these damn cameras doing here? Get these cameras out of my face.
- 1:01:20Take them out. Get them out of here.
- 1:01:22It's like, that's your job. You're the PA. Oh, my bad. I'll be all right.
- 1:01:26Take you down the street. You're up there about six feet. Yeah.
- 1:01:31Yeah, but Shang-Chi was like one of the first ones that came up after COVID.
- 1:01:35And no one knew how to handle a set, you know.
- 1:01:40Everyone was still learning. They had people like the CCO and that was like
- 1:01:44the COVID compliance officer.
- 1:01:46And that was a new job for everyone on set was to have a CCO.
- 1:01:50And no one understood how to follow protocols sometimes, you know.
- 1:01:55And then they had those other, like, mobile tests you could take where you could,
- 1:01:58like, that's what we'd do. Before, you had to come into office and take that shit.
- 1:02:03And now, like, it just changed gradually.
- 1:02:06And then eventually it ended up, like, being nothing after a while.
- 1:02:10But, I mean, during that time, it was just tough, like, how to maneuver around
- 1:02:13all that and still make a movie. Yeah.
- 1:02:16Yeah. It was because they was trying to. And I bet the production company spent
- 1:02:20a lot of money just dedicated to like COVID testing.
- 1:02:25So we're like, we could tell just
- 1:02:29how much of a shortage there was with work because it's just so much money was
- 1:02:35dedicated to having to put forth towards COVID testing that it was just impossible
- 1:02:40to get all these projects off the ground how it normally would have been.
- 1:02:46Yeah there is a lot of money to be spent too on
- 1:02:48these movies too and then all they all went to covid like
- 1:02:52i remember being in la and one of the things that we had to
- 1:02:55do for covid testing was to drive up and they'd take the test inside the car
- 1:02:59yeah or you drive away and i was like something i was like oh what the hell
- 1:03:02that's different you know and like there's yeah so much things that they had
- 1:03:08to waste on covid compliance and all that and we had to drive to a certain specific,
- 1:03:14COVID tested place.
- 1:03:16To get that, to get the swab or whatever.
- 1:03:18And it's like, they're like, if you live somewhere like Sacramento,
- 1:03:22like me, like live in Sacramento, well, can I just go down the streets and like
- 1:03:25write it? Like, no, you got to go to the specific one in Oakland.
- 1:03:29And it's like, oh my God.
- 1:03:31Was it by the Children's Hospital that one? Yeah.
- 1:03:39Yeah, man. Yeah, it's tough, dude. I wish it was more like you just go Walgreens
- 1:03:43to take it instead of having to do all that.
- 1:03:45Yeah, it was a headache and a pain and stuff like that.
- 1:03:49And then the thing that sucked about that is the second they ended all the COVID
- 1:03:56protocols and were thinking that things were getting ready to get back up and
- 1:04:00running, the strike happened.
- 1:04:03Dude, it was one thing after another. I got hit with the strikes.
- 1:04:08That kind of demolished a lot of things.
- 1:04:11Money was being sent to more to the executives and they didn't want to share
- 1:04:17and they didn't want to help crews out and make films.
- 1:04:22There's a bunch of things going on. It was weird.
- 1:04:26Because a lot of people don't realize a lot of movies that came out last year,
- 1:04:29like 2024 and stuff like that, from a consumer standpoint, they'll be watching
- 1:04:34it and they'll be like, oh, this is my first time. Deadpool and Wolverine or whatever.
- 1:04:38They're like, oh, it came in theaters like now, but they don't understand.
- 1:04:41Like that movie went into production.
- 1:04:43Before those strikes you know i mean it was a it
- 1:04:46was a production during the middle of the strike so a lot of
- 1:04:49these movies have been coming out like over like
- 1:04:522024 was carry over from 2022 2023
- 1:04:56that never got released because of the strike so it's like it's like a it's
- 1:05:00like a like a log jam a back jam of work yeah to where like so now consumers
- 1:05:05they're seeing that they're seeing this content all these movies being put out
- 1:05:08but from our standpoint for people who try to work and shit.
- 1:05:11We're like, that's cool and all, but shit is slow.
- 1:05:13Yeah, there's nothing going on. We don't got nothing.
- 1:05:16It's like, we're just waiting. We see these movies, but none of those are new
- 1:05:20movies. Yeah, to us, they're not new movies.
- 1:05:22We're like... We're still waiting for Freaky Tales.
- 1:05:27Yeah, Freaky Tales is supposed to come out this year.
- 1:05:30I want to see that. I worked on that for a little bit.
- 1:05:34I left early, but it was fun while I was there.
- 1:05:37Yeah so the other
- 1:05:40movie that you have worked on it was you said dead wrong yeah rob
- 1:05:44schneider i was one of those that actually that
- 1:05:47job gave me my union days to join the union
- 1:05:50in la but it gave me 19 days you need 30 days
- 1:05:53to join so basically you have to have 30 days to join the local 399 teamsters
- 1:05:58union in la that that job gave you 19 days okay on set and that was a fun event
- 1:06:05or a fun set because like the the crew was fun to work with i had one of the coolest managers,
- 1:06:12shout out to romeo you're a good dude he always helped me out when i needed
- 1:06:15the help i mean he got me the job too and it was a fun set like different places
- 1:06:20to go to i've been talking to rob
- 1:06:22schneider and just being a part of that production was fun to work in l.a.
- 1:06:27And you said it was 19 days or it was 30 days to join the union?
- 1:06:33To join the union. And that job gave you 19 of those days?
- 1:06:36Yeah. Now, when they break that down, is it like you just show up for the day?
- 1:06:40Does it count? Or is it like an hour scale that the hours have to accumulate to like 30 days?
- 1:06:45I think it's on the paycheck or your payroll.
- 1:06:50It should say your hours that you worked on. and
- 1:06:54then it should give you like your day as in those
- 1:06:57hours like your 12 hour day so that's one day
- 1:06:59okay and then you know they count it from
- 1:07:02there and okay and it's weird because you have to send it
- 1:07:05to a third-party company called contract services
- 1:07:08for them to vouch to verify your
- 1:07:11your days that you worked and then you go back to teamsters and it's like a
- 1:07:16whole mess you know that's interesting yeah but i mean not a lot of people understand
- 1:07:21how much like you got to do to join the union there you have to get 30 days
- 1:07:25sometimes you that's not the best way to do it sometimes you have to go on a
- 1:07:29non-union shoot that flips to a union shoot.
- 1:07:32I don't know i just got it that way i didn't join yet
- 1:07:35by the way okay but still yeah but
- 1:07:38you got the eligibility or what i didn't get the eligibility i got
- 1:07:41the 19 days okay okay i needed 11 more okay i
- 1:07:44get what you're saying and i try to get i try to get it like throughout the
- 1:07:47last couple years but i never ended up being 11 days so it
- 1:07:50actually expired those 19 days those expire yeah
- 1:07:53after three years holy smokes yeah that seems
- 1:07:57like a hassle from like from
- 1:08:00a like a like i said a production assistant standpoint to where
- 1:08:02i guess i could see why because like i heard the thing that say like production
- 1:08:06assistants they like have like a five year like you know after five years and
- 1:08:10so they kind of like either they move up or they just don't do it no more i
- 1:08:14guess I can see how you say if your hours reset after three years,
- 1:08:19stuff like that, you don't want to.
- 1:08:21If you're sitting around at 24 hours or something, I'm only six hours away,
- 1:08:24but shit's about to reset at six months. You'd be like, ugh.
- 1:08:29It was like, dude, I tried so hard to get on that, and it didn't happen.
- 1:08:34But it left me with the union in San Francisco to stay with.
- 1:08:38So I was like, all right, I'll stay here. And if time ever comes to come to LA,
- 1:08:42if LA calls me back to go there to work, and that might happen this spring but
- 1:08:45I don't know if that's going to happen in a movie but if it does happen to work
- 1:08:51that way then I'll come back to
- 1:08:53LA and do that and then chase acting over there. It very leads me there.
- 1:08:58And is there a way for them to like grandfather you in like.
- 1:09:02Being a local up here in San Francisco to where like.
- 1:09:06Transfer to the Teamsters to them. Yeah. I think the only thing they do is you
- 1:09:12don't pay the initiation fee when you join. Okay.
- 1:09:15But you pay like some other fee. Yeah.
- 1:09:18Because I think like with the union, you could be like me. I'm local up here
- 1:09:23for San Francisco. But like if I wanted to join down in LA, I'd have to pay
- 1:09:28the remaining half or whatever. The 15. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:33I mean i want to join all nationwide yeah
- 1:09:36i think it'd be it'd definitely be beneficial because it's like
- 1:09:39from a like just a career-wise standpoint
- 1:09:42the way i look at it is like me being a member of the union or whatever it's
- 1:09:46kind of just like like it like in a video game or whatever like you know you
- 1:09:48have like you reach like a checkpoint in a video there's like no matter what
- 1:09:51happens after this point i know i'm gonna restart right here you know what i
- 1:09:54mean it was kind of like that's like i know no matter what happens like with
- 1:09:57the acting or whatever like falls off or whatever it may be.
- 1:10:01I know if I want to restart it wherever I travel to or whatever,
- 1:10:05I want to restart it. I'm starting right here.
- 1:10:07As a SAG member. As rather as opposed to be non-union now I got to fight for the SAG vouchers.
- 1:10:14Basically go through that whole hassle again.
- 1:10:17That's a whole hassle in its own. I don't think anyone wants to go through all that again.
- 1:10:21If you get it to this mark, you're staying at that mark. I'm like,
- 1:10:24I ain't going back. Have you ever considered like FICOR?
- 1:10:27I heard about it I don't even know how to go about it yeah I don't know how
- 1:10:30to go about it either but I mean it's just basically from what my understanding
- 1:10:33is you just give up all your union rights so you basically you just you're just
- 1:10:37basically doing it for the paycheck.
- 1:10:39No residuals no I don't think I don't know I'm pretty sure the residuals still
- 1:10:43still apply yeah but like I'd have to like do like I said I'm not too familiar
- 1:10:48with that's not me or whatever stuff like that but,
- 1:10:52James over like I might be recording right now let me alone.
- 1:10:58You see we got the show going on man,
- 1:11:02you wanted to say hi yeah you just wanted to say what's up,
- 1:11:06but then um okay so then last one what was
- 1:11:08the second one on your list was uh ob-wan for star
- 1:11:11wars yeah what was that like oh that was cool
- 1:11:14man like we shot in on location and
- 1:11:18usually like the star star wars movies at that
- 1:11:21time were shooting in studio like Mandalorian like they
- 1:11:24had the green screen behind the actors and all
- 1:11:26that but with Obi-Wan Kenobi they were shooting on
- 1:11:29site at a location and one
- 1:11:32of them was in Sun Valley in LA and it was like five football fields big of
- 1:11:38a like a field that goes down and that was like the place of Tatooine and that
- 1:11:45was like a cool place to see man it looked just like the village in Star Wars
- 1:11:49and like It was just realistic.
- 1:11:52It's like the way that they made the homes and all that.
- 1:11:57Probably one of the coolest sets I've seen. And also, I got to see Darth Vader.
- 1:12:01I got to see, like, Obi-Wan. What's his name? I forgot his name.
- 1:12:07Oh, Hugh McGregor? Yeah. Was it Hugh McGregor? Who played Obi-Wan? It was the other guy.
- 1:12:13Christian. Oh, Hayden. Hayden. Oh, Darth Vader. That was Darth Vader. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:12:19Okay. I got mixed up. Yeah, it's all good.
- 1:12:24Like, are you even a Star Wars fan to be on this set? Honestly,
- 1:12:27I forget the characters. I don't remember all of them.
- 1:12:30But it was cool to be on a Star Wars flick and be part of that.
- 1:12:35Probably one of the greatest times. Great times. Were you on that for the whole time?
- 1:12:38For the most part, yeah. Because it took breaks in between.
- 1:12:42Yeah. And sometimes I wasn't working. I was like, dude, I need to be on.
- 1:12:45Because I moved to LA too at that time. I was trying to live there.
- 1:12:48I needed the work. Yeah. So I paid my bills.
- 1:12:50But it wasn't working out. And that's why I ended up having to leave to come back too.
- 1:12:55So one of those things. Yeah. It's all good. You back up here?
- 1:12:59Back up here? Back with the community? Back with the family making moves and shit like that?
- 1:13:02It won't be... I mean, way LA is looking right now anyways.
- 1:13:07That's probably a blessing. You have to be burnt down.
- 1:13:11Praise to the family and everybody that's being affected by that,
- 1:13:14but from a filmmaker's standpoint, having to move away from all that,
- 1:13:18it was probably just a blessing in disguise.
- 1:13:20Yeah. Good way of putting it, man. Yeah.
- 1:13:24Alright, man. Yeah, Bobby, you said, man, that's We're going to wrap this here episode up, man.
