- 1:19Philip Marlowe. The original air at eighth June eighteenth, nineteen forty nine,
- 1:25and the title is the Busy Body, Get This and Get It Straight.
- 1:33Crime is the Suckers Road and knows who travel had wind up in the gut
- 1:36of the prison of the Grave. There's no other end, but they never
- 1:38learned this time. It started as a routine search for a rich girl's fiance
- 1:42and the trail led to a silent house, haunted by a face at the
- 1:46window and blood in an open seated chest. But before it was over,
- 1:49it became a search for a cop that wouldn't sit still. From the pen
- 1:55of Raymond Tranfer, up Spending, author of Mister Rake, comes his most
- 1:57famous character and crimes most deadly enemy. As we present the adventures of Philip
- 2:04Marlow, now with Gerald Moore start as Philip Marlow, we bring you tonight's
- 2:16exciting story. The busy body phone jerked me up, off my back and
- 2:36out of the sports page at nine point thirty in the evening of an already
- 2:38two long day. On the other end was a warm, feminine voice,
- 2:43aged with the kind of self assurance that means money and lots of it.
- 2:47But the words were both hurried and panicky. So after I hung up,
- 2:51I reluctantly waded through the sports section with my feet instead of my eyes,
- 2:54and headed to the coffee shop at Franklin and Bronson, where my new client
- 2:59would identify herself as Liz Stewart said she'd be waiting a pair of blue eyes
- 3:04at a table in the corner. Measured me from haircut the shoelaces. So
- 3:07I took the queue and walked over. After we introduced ourselves, I was
- 3:10waved into the chair opposite her. She leaned toward me and started with a
- 3:15rush mister motto. I've got to find a man named Dean Howard as soon
- 3:16as possible. Not exactly a new switch. He's my fiancee. We planned
- 3:21to notify my uncle Hanley of our engagement tonight. Who is Uncle Hanley?
- 3:24Uncle Hanley Stewart of Stewart Aluminum. Okay, go ahead, Dean. Dean
- 3:29Howard was to meet me at seven, but he didn't show up, and
- 3:31then about a quarter to eight he called. He started to tell me something
- 3:35about something that he referred to as a horrible mistake, but before he could
- 3:38get it out, we were cut off. Or I tried to him cofee
- 3:42coffee, no noe. I tried to call him back, but there was
- 3:46no answer. So I went to his house, but it was locked and
- 3:49dark, and yet his car was still parked outside. Well, look this,
- 3:53Stewart, why don't you save hisself fifty bucks go home and wait for
- 3:54an apologetic phone call? Huh, what do you mean? Well? This
- 3:59tacks up as me case of cold feet or a little celebration that got out
- 4:01of hand. Either way, there's nothing to worry about it. I've come
- 4:04to you for help, Marlow, not a pat on the head. Okay,
- 4:06okay, I'll assume it's my error for the moment. How long have
- 4:10you known as Dean Howard? I met him at a party about three months
- 4:13ago. Uncle Henley and I both liked him tremendously right from the first.
- 4:16I suppose you've considered the possibility of another woman. Well, of course,
- 4:19I'm not a child. I can see that Dean have been deeply troubled for
- 4:25the past week. He wouldn't tell me why, but I'm certain that this
- 4:28business tonight is tied in with it. Something's wrong, and I want you
- 4:31to find out what it is. All right, but I'm no legman for
- 4:34Cupid, so if it turns out to be nothing more than a guy's heart
- 4:36beating in double time, I drop it. Fair enough, This is fair
- 4:40enough. She gave me a short list of push joints she and Dean Howard
- 4:48sometimes visited, and his address, which was three twelve Normandy. She said
- 4:54I could reach her at home, which was twenty eight Roxbury Drive in Beverly
- 4:57Hills, Well, fifty bucks is fifty buck. So after she left,
- 5:00I spent a handful of Nichols checking the list by phone and drew a complete
- 5:04blank. So I drove out Lost Phelis to normality and found the number three
- 5:09twelve. As I walked up to the door and lean on the bell,
- 5:12I got the feeling that I was being watched. There was no answer,
- 5:15so I tried the door. It was locked. I threw a look over
- 5:18my shoulder as I walked around the side of the house and caught a glimpse
- 5:21of a face in a window next door, just before the curtain was dropped
- 5:26back into place. The back door of three twelve was locked too. I
- 5:29found out is did the face next door, which was watching me again from
- 5:31one of the real windows. There was one answer to that, so I
- 5:34went out in the street and up the steps of the house next door and
- 5:36knocked good and loud. What do you want? My name's Marlow, Lady,
- 5:45I'm a detective. You may be able to help me. I did
- 5:46keep it will come right in Tomato. It's above times. All I have
- 5:51to say. I'm Agatha Lamb Bigger. What's he been up to? Who
- 5:57are you investigating that bachelor next door? Aren't you? Yeah? How'd you
- 6:00know? Sense? The reason? I've known all along he's a suspicious character.
- 6:04He live there a here now comes and goes at all hours, drive
- 6:09that fancy car out there, wears fine clothes, but nobody seems to know
- 6:12what he does or where he gets all his money. Well look, missus
- 6:15lamb girl, Oh, believe you me. They don't come to clean His
- 6:19house never gets cleaned, but they come just the same my Only tonight there
- 6:25was one, some blonde and a white dress. I tell you, I's
- 6:28Lambregger. That the girl go inside? Well no, but she tried to
- 6:32the door was locked, and it's miss Lambriger, Oh stupid of me.
- 6:39Well tell me, did you notice mister Howard come home tonight? Well?
- 6:42I didn't exactly see him come home, but he was over there all right,
- 6:46And not at all either? Is that another girl? No, there
- 6:49was only some man. But it still bears out what I've been saying,
- 6:54because I just happened to glance out of my window at this one here cross
- 6:56and that one of his you see, Yes, Well a light was on
- 7:00over there and I could look straight down the hallway and do you know what
- 7:04those two grown men were rough housing like a pair of hooglims in that hall,
- 7:09wrestling. They were like ordinary ruffians. I tell you, I never
- 7:11saw the like. I got a good look at him, and i'd certainly
- 7:14know him if I saw him again. Well, how'd the fight come out?
- 7:16Right? Yeah? But oh the fight, Well, I can't say
- 7:21about that. My phone rang. It was Leonora Prowley. She simply talked
- 7:25it ear off when she got it. So when I finally got back to
- 7:28the window, when I happened to look out again, it was dark over
- 7:30there, So I never did sign off what actually happened? Yes, well,
- 7:33thanks very much for your help. I really must rude. Oh one
- 7:35another thing, the noise and the drinking that's gone on in that house.
- 7:41Why you wouldn't believe it. Oh you're leaving as soon as possible. Yeah,
- 7:44but you still haven't told me what he's up to. Well, I'm
- 7:46not at liberty to do that. I Oh, that's a shame. Well,
- 7:49I'll be here all the time, you know, and I'll certainly keep
- 7:53an eye on that house. Oh, I can't tell you how much I
- 7:55appreciate you're going to all this trouble just for me, Bo soir, Miss
- 8:00slam Brigade. I backed out of that wind tunnel, got in my car
- 8:11and drove noisily around the corner. Then I cut my lights, turned quietly
- 8:15into an alley behind the house and stuffed slipped through Howard's back gate and up
- 8:18the side of the house, found a window that could be persuaded, and
- 8:22went in. Howard was a lousy housekeeper, and everything that didn't get brushed
- 8:26off and normal traffic was covered with dust. I found my way to the
- 8:30room opposite Ageta Lambriger's observation window and ran smack into a first line where she
- 8:35said there was a hallway. There was a solid wall papered with purple roses
- 8:39and hung with four dingy pictures in bronze frames, two on each side of
- 8:43a big, ugly mirror. There were two hallways, but no angle at
- 8:46which either could be seen from her window. Furthermore, there was outside of
- 8:50a struggle. One hall led the study the out of the bedroom, and
- 8:54I checked both, but still there was no indication of a fight. My
- 8:58way out of my shin on the nose of a lion caught on the corner
- 9:01of an oversize seated chest, just as the abrupt sound of someone at the
- 9:05door brought me to a rigid halt. Whatever it was at the patience of
- 9:09an eight year old on Circus Day. So I set myself up as a
- 9:13typele might live in a joint like this. An entered, Eh, what's
- 9:18the matter with the lights out? Blow a few? How could this be
- 9:22some new economy measure? I like it this way. I don't think I
- 9:26know you. You should, Howard? You should? I called you yesterday
- 9:28about a certain money matter. The name is Leah. Don't go for your
- 9:33gun, howid well? Since yours is pointed at my third rib, why
- 9:37should I, Like I told you on the phone, my boss is anxious,
- 9:41you're way over do How would I want that fifty grand? The boss
- 9:43lonely three months ago, have it for me the day after the minle all
- 9:48of it without fail. He knows I'm good for my debts. Why all
- 9:52the pressure? Maybe figures your investments are so smile like? Maybe you've been
- 9:56blowing too much on that second rate canary. Carol. Oh, oh yeah,
- 10:01Carol, I remember she's your girl. Well, that's none of my
- 10:05business. See you day after tomorrow about the same time. And if you
- 10:09got a headache from worrying about paying off, just think of the one you'll
- 10:13have if you don't pay. It'll be like ten times now, good night.
- 10:28Forty five in his hand caught the side of my head, and I
- 10:31went out cold. When I opened my eyes, the room had shrunk until
- 10:37there wasn't enough space left to stretch out in I'm I climbed to my feet.
- 10:41Oh, it's as easy as roller skating through a log jam. And
- 10:46it wasn't until I found a match and had a light that I knew why.
- 10:50Somebody had moved me from the front door and cramed me into a broom
- 10:52closet like a bag of wet wash. When I got out, I saw
- 10:56that my cubby hole was off the hall of the bedroom. Listen, but
- 11:00there was no sound in the house, so I started moving. Let's stop
- 11:03when I noticed something else, A big seated chest with carved lions on the
- 11:07corners that had been closed before and now was standing open. I struck another
- 11:11match. Inside on the bottom was a thick red puddle of blood. At
- 11:16the mansion was in the middle of a metal apology to the stewart. When
- 11:18it came I ran for the front door in time to see I get the
- 11:22charge out of the driveway and down the street. Start terror, twisting her
- 11:24face. Hey, let slam break a hold it. What is it?
- 11:31What happened? I saw it? He's dead, mister, follow head in
- 11:37my backyard? All right? All right? Now take it easy. What
- 11:41he dare? Not? Lying on his back close to the heads and he's
- 11:43dead. What do we do? Come on, we'll have a look.
- 11:46He can show me where he is. Alright here. I happened to look
- 11:52up my rear window and I saw something move. The dogs had been getting
- 11:56in my pens lately enough. I thought this was another, so I came
- 12:00out to chase him away. When I saw the body right back here,
- 12:07it's gone. Now look, miss Lamberger, I've got a headache. I'm
- 12:11getting a little tired of this. You saw a body here, just like
- 12:13you saw a fight in a hallway from your window. You're so anxious to
- 12:16be in the middle of thing. Should make up any kind of a story.
- 12:20I'm not. I saw that. I saw the Howard's body too.
- 12:22It was here, I did where show me exactly right right about there?
- 12:28Oh? Sure? Sure? And I suppose it? Hey, wait a
- 12:30minute. Yeah, my apologies, baby, there is something here could be
- 12:37blood. Here's two dimes and a borrow seat from the tulip room on the
- 12:41strip. What do you do now raid the place? You can use my
- 12:46phone. Thanks, But until we know with a buddy as we better play
- 12:48at KG. Now let's keep this a secret between us. That'll take a
- 12:52lot of courage, I know, but I can trust you can't. I
- 12:54I won't open my mouth to a sole mouth. Great, that's splendid.
- 12:58Now you better go inside and stay there until you hear from who knows you
- 13:01may yet be a heroine, Miss Lambrigger. The bar a sick was a
- 13:13long shot. When I was still two blocks away from a tulip room,
- 13:16I knew it had paid off because a fluorescent banner four x twelve draped over
- 13:20the front of a squat square building extole the vocal virtues of one Carol Cody.
- 13:26I popped across the street, went in and found a dressing room door
- 13:28and knocked. She distinctly said come in, But when I did, I
- 13:31thought the room was empty until a small handful of spangled satin costume hopped up
- 13:35from behind the screen in the corner. I made a sight unseen introduction.
- 13:41It was only a moment later that a tall brunette filling a white silk blouse
- 13:46and snug dark slack stepped on, tossed a few pounds of glossy black hair
- 13:52away from my face, and gestured me into a chair. Which paper did
- 13:54you say you were from? Moto? I didn't, honey, I'm a
- 13:58private detective. I can't use don't give odds on a baby, not yet
- 14:01anyway. Huh. Let's talk first presence. What's with you and Dean Howard.
- 14:05Dean Howard is a low crawling thing that's strange. How did you love
- 14:09him? I didn't till the night when I found out that he has two
- 14:13heads. That's so he can lie and keep a straight face with one while
- 14:16he laughs of his sleep with the other. Nuts to him, nuts to
- 14:18his Steward and her money, and nuts to you. I hate Dean Howard
- 14:22enough to kill him, and I might just do that. I don't think
- 14:24you will know, because somebody beats you to it. You you mean Howard's
- 14:30dead looks that way. I'm not sure, because he won't stay in one
- 14:33place long enough. You're trying to shock me. You're wasting your time.
- 14:37I'm not sorry. What I think we've got company? Keep talking, I'll
- 14:39get him. Oh as you say, my friend, the music business is
- 14:43just as lousy as any other dodge and I can prove it. Come you're
- 14:46a good listener, but so join the party. Why why are you listening
- 14:50out there? Come on? Not just just a minute. I wasn't listening.
- 14:52I was looking for you, Mollow. I'm more older, mister Hanley
- 14:56Stewart's assistant. You're doing fine. Don't stop now. Since I learned that
- 15:00missus Stewart hired ju Marlow, I've been trying to talk to you. I
- 15:03followed you here from that place on Normandy because I must know what you found
- 15:07out so far. Why what business is it of yours? Because, mister
- 15:09Mallow, I doubt very much that you even know of the robbery? Robbery?
- 15:13What robbery? More than forty thousand dollars worth of negotiable securities was stolen
- 15:16from mister Stewart's safe this evening. You get all your information at key holes,
- 15:20and I have reason to believe that the man you're looking for took them.
- 15:24Of course, I don't dare accuse him without proof of his relationship with
- 15:26Liz, mister Stewart's niece. If I were wrong it, he would cost
- 15:31me my job. Did Liz know about the robbery when she hired me?
- 15:33Why? Of course, Oh, brother, looks see this. Her name
- 15:37is Carrol. She's involved right up to her mass Kara and the whole mess.
- 15:39I'll let her ready aside till I get back. Why shot that app
- 15:43and it's for being cheap. I'll take care of you when I get back
- 15:56in just a moment. The second act of Philip Marlowe, but first three
- 16:00gentlemen with highly varying but equally effective approaches to dealing with crime, entertaining you
- 16:04with their deeds of daring on CBS every Sunday. Jethro Dumont alias the Green
- 16:10Lama Police Commissioner, Bill Grant of Called the Police, and Dashal Hammet Sam
- 16:15Spade. These three sterling gentlemen all make their appearances tomorrow on most of these
- 16:19same CBS network stations. And now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned
- 16:25to the second act of Phila Marlowe and tonight's story The Busy Body. After
- 16:40convincing ward Odom that his greatest contribution to the cause would be staying close,
- 16:44but not too close to the violent lady in slacks. I piled into my
- 16:47car and start at the Beverly Hills in a beautiful liar named Liz. I
- 16:51didn't stop until I was at number twenty eight Roxbury Drive. Out of my
- 16:53car and walking fast up the semicircle of gravel driveway led to the carefully antique
- 16:59front door. But then, for two good reasons, I stopped again.
- 17:03First, the squad car parked ahead of me. That said everybody except Marlowe
- 17:07knew all about the bonds. Mister Hanley Stewart could no longer call his own.
- 17:11The second reason, and more important, was my client, Liz Stewart,
- 17:14sneaking out of his side door and hurrying toward a gray coop. I
- 17:17stepped back into the shadow of squat Palm and waited for it to come abreast
- 17:19of me. Late date, Miss Stewart, man, no, why you
- 17:25started considering everything? It's the least I can do. What do you mean?
- 17:27I don't like clients who lie to me, so if you don't mind,
- 17:30I just stroll along with you. While you were assure me you could
- 17:33explain everything, but I can. Don't. Just give me a chance,
- 17:36please, all right, why didn't you tell me that forty grand went from
- 17:40negotiable bonds disappeared? Tom, your uncle's safe at the same time as hard,
- 17:42because I didn't want you to be prejudiced to be looking for a thief
- 17:45from the start. If Dean did take ose body had to read like being
- 17:49fond of money, No, like being forced to do what he did.
- 17:52All right, let's say it was forced. What then? Well, then
- 17:56I wanted to help him to get to him before the police. They'd arrest
- 17:59him in a minute. And you, on the other hand, would get
- 18:00the bonds back to your uncle, convinced him it was all a mistake,
- 18:03and talk him out of telling the law. Huh, And with your own
- 18:04dough you would help Howard out of his spotty was in? Is that it?
- 18:07Yes? But you haven't proved the Dean took the bond? No,
- 18:11I haven't. Could have been anyone in knew the combination of the library,
- 18:15say, which includes how many aside from Uncle Hannah and myself, just the
- 18:21family lawyer and mister Odom. Yeah, what about Odem? Could he have
- 18:25done it? Liz? No, I don't think so. As much as
- 18:27I dislike him, you see, Marlo for years, Odam's been very close
- 18:30to Uncle Hann He's had a thousand opportunities to steal if he wanted to,
- 18:33or like this afternoon, for instance, he had ten thousand dollars worth of
- 18:37the bonds with him today. What was he doing with all that dough paying
- 18:40gas bills? He was going to sell them for my uncle, but the
- 18:44transaction fell through, so he brought them back to the house and put them
- 18:47back in a safe Anyway, Marlowe, I don't think he'd have the courage
- 18:49to steal. I know what you mean. I've already met mister Otimo when
- 18:55about a half hour ago in a nightclub called the Tulip Room. Odam thinks
- 18:59Dean is guilty, Liz, but he's afraid to mention it publicly till he
- 19:00knows a little more what the nightclub got to do with Dean. Carol Cody
- 19:06who she's Dean's girlfriend, marlow you're creepy. I talked to her, honey,
- 19:11she's a singer there. Told me that she and Howard were more than
- 19:14chummy, but that she gave him the air to night when she found out
- 19:15about you. And you believe that, mm hmm. Now that I've had
- 19:21little time. I believe even more the tales that she never bothered to mension,
- 19:23the tales like Dean Howard and Carol Cody playing you for a sucker,
- 19:29he gains your confidence and the combination of the safe and then goodbye. But
- 19:33you see, the end was a switch, Liz, Dean didn't. Dean
- 19:38didn't. What what is it? Madam? What are you staring at back
- 19:42of my car? There? It's not guess stripping on the driveway. The
- 19:47color's too red. Let's stay back. Oh mallow, I don't want you.
- 19:49I want it's Dean. He's dead, Marlo. That is the switch
- 20:02I was talking about. I think being Howard not only crossed you, but
- 20:04Carol Cody as well. She did it. You got it, you got
- 20:08it? Because all right, all right, I listen, get inside,
- 20:11tell the police about this. Do you hear me? But first give me
- 20:15a five minute lead. I'll take your car. I want to get the
- 20:18Carrol Cody before the law does. Without saying another word, Liz Stewart,
- 20:22her face drawn and streak with tears, handed me the keys to a car
- 20:26and turned and walked slowly back to the house. I took one long look
- 20:30at the blood soaked shirt front on the body and had been a step behind
- 20:33all night. Then got into Lizz's car and pointed it back toward the tulip
- 20:36room. Twenty minutes later, when my knocking the lock dressing room door brought
- 20:40no answer, I had kicked my way in alone and half conscious in the
- 20:44middle of the floor was ward owed him the man I designed to stand sentry
- 20:47over the brunette. She tripped me, asked for a cigarette, and I
- 20:51went to light. She swung and adds owed him, And you're lucky she
- 20:53let it go. At that was more permanent in Howard's case than you found
- 20:57his body mak in the trunk of my car. Oh, oh, how
- 21:00awful. And she did all that, this Carol Cody. Yes and no,
- 21:06she must have had help odum, because first of all, it takes
- 21:08something stronger than the chanteurs to keep shifting her coughs from see the chest to
- 21:11garden the car the rate that Howard was being moved in the second, an
- 21:15old crow named Agatha Lamberger saw a man rough housing with Howard over his own
- 21:19place, not a woman. You mean there was a witness to the murder
- 21:22marrow more or less, and you have no idea who the murder is.
- 21:26No, that odem is all the more reason why I want to catch up
- 21:30with Carol Cody happen. I know where she lives, well, yes,
- 21:33yes, just at the gray Field Apartment hotel on North Haven, hers Striving.
- 21:37It's a room room and I think that, by the way, my
- 21:41cot coady is got what Yes, and she was wearing slacks, remember Malo.
- 21:47Maybe she's leaving town disguised as a man. It's a point, Odin.
- 21:51I still think I'll try the Apoptment hotel first. In the doors open
- 22:04the boys? Did you get the test? Fallow? What are you doing
- 22:08here doubling for a bell hop? So get over there, sit down and
- 22:11keep your hands in your laugh because if I have to, I'll shoot.
- 22:14I'll make it real. Plane. I think you murdered Dean Howard because he
- 22:17double crossed you after he emptied handleys tow it's safe and I think you're out
- 22:19of your mind, which brings us to a position calls tailmate, and that
- 22:22in turn makes us a good time to call a cop. I didn't kill
- 22:26Dean. I swear I didn't listen to me what you said about Dean double
- 22:29crossing me after he stole the bonds. It is true, but not the
- 22:32way you think it is. Second verse. He didn't want to just cut
- 22:34me out of my share, Marlow, He wanted to return all the bonds.
- 22:37Intact, he really fell in love with Liz Stewart and decided to play
- 22:41all American boy. I mean he decided to call it all off after he'd
- 22:44stolen the bonds. Yes, that was the reason, we argued. Tone.
- 22:47That's a stronger reason the one I already had for you, your committing
- 22:49murder. Baby, you wanted that money bag. I'm back here. Why
- 22:53did you belt out him and run? I don't bother denying that you did,
- 22:56because I just left him and he's minus good health in that top coat
- 22:59of there. So if you think that you that I was scared that a
- 23:03confession out of Dean would get me into hot water. And when you showed
- 23:04and then odin just a minute we're here, I think I've got the answer.
- 23:11It's dust, Carol. Dust, what an old gossip sweat she saw
- 23:14of from my window. Right now, I've got to get over to her
- 23:15place before she ends up looking like the late mister Howard. Can you believe
- 23:19me, mar about not killing Dean. I don't know since you've been in
- 23:22and this cheap swindle from the start was just talking one on an old fashioned
- 23:25wardrobe just for safe keeping baby outside, and was his car. I slammed
- 23:37my foot down hard against the accelerator and didn't needs up until I switched to
- 23:40a stop away from three to ten north, normally where I knew murder was
- 23:42scheduled to happen again, and I was next to a pair of half open
- 23:45French doors, to which I could see Agatha Lambricker sitting erect in a straight
- 23:48back chair. I was happy that I hadn't taken any longer than getting there.
- 23:53I was also happy that the man standing opposite her gun in hand,
- 23:56the man who would murder Dean Howard at his back to me a firm grip
- 24:00on a thirty eighth in my hand, and so nosy, miss Lambrigger.
- 24:03But it's too bad that Marlow had to let me know you've been a witness
- 24:04when I killed Dean Howard. A roughhouse I think you called it a rough
- 24:07house, is what I thought at the time. But when I saw Dean
- 24:11Howard's body out in the alleyway, I knew, you know my children.
- 24:15Everything would have been simple if you hadn't had your nose out a mile.
- 24:18I was going to run over him and it would have looked like an accident,
- 24:21but I had to move the body. After you saw it. Marlow's
- 24:23car looked good until could dispose of it. But there's no point telling you
- 24:26all this. You won't be able to guess up about it. Miss Lambriger.
- 24:30I'm sorry, sorry, but that's the way it has to be.
- 24:33You or me. I vote for you. Ortum brought your gun before I
- 24:37closed the poles for good, real noise. You're like, come on,
- 24:38drive it, well, don't shoot. I dropped it. I dropped it,
- 24:42Okay, I'm moved to the middle of the room, hands high.
- 24:47Well, I didn't want to do it. I had to tell best Dean
- 24:49Howard was going to return the bonds he took. And they would have left
- 24:52you in a spot, wouldn't it, because Howard only stole thirty grand out
- 24:55of that. Say, if you were taking ten grand legitimately selfia boss,
- 24:59and when you went through a and then you saw that beneffect and you decided
- 25:02to make the most of it and let somebody else take the rap for the
- 25:03whole forty grand don't worry. A man who shoots another man in the back
- 25:07has no guts. You won't try anything while I'm looking at him. No,
- 25:11no, Mama, I don't have any more guts. It takes the
- 25:15jumping out a woman's skirt. Olidia chumps that down. Did you take one
- 25:19more stuff? No? Loja gonna listen? All right? Let I got
- 25:23him? Sure, sure, let it go, just as long as you
- 25:26cooperate, Mama. Hollo mio, don't shut up, shout you're killed me
- 25:32anyway? Shoot? No shot, shut down. Hm, you were right,
- 25:47Marlow, no guts. It was an ambulance, a half a dozen
- 26:00squad cars and a police captain included in three long hours of questions and answers
- 26:04in triplicate. Later before a three ten North, Normandy and environ settled back
- 26:08to being just another quiet house on just another quiet street, with of course,
- 26:15the exception of Miss Agatha Lamberger, who now would never return to normalcy.
- 26:21And as we stepped hot tea together in a clock someplace seeper the other
- 26:25rooms struck twice. She was still going strong. Howard owed money, so
- 26:30he and that Worthis Singer decided that he should get friendly with your well played
- 26:33client and end at a propitious moment, Robert Uncle, Correct. Correct,
- 26:37But what I don't understand is how you knew it with that awful man Oedem.
- 26:41Well, there were two things, honey of his anxiety to get me
- 26:42to Carol, together with a streak of dust the length of Otem's topcoat sleeve,
- 26:47all added up to a hunch back, Philip, I don't understand.
- 26:49Well, you got to take him in a reverse order. I saw a
- 26:52dust on Otem's topcoat sleeve when I was in Carroll Cody's apartment that reminded me
- 26:56of the dust all over Howard's place. Oh, I messed that house luckily,
- 27:00And the dust was the length of the sleeve, as though somebody had
- 27:03brushed against the wall, coated thick with it. One. We're in searching
- 27:07for something there. That's right, that's right. Now, there's another thing.
- 27:11You saw Howard and another man rough housing in a hall by looking out
- 27:14of that window where Miss Lamberg and no hall is visible, but where there
- 27:18is a mirror. Oh, then you mean I actually saw a reflection,
- 27:23He's darling, you did, Dean Howard hid the bonds behind the mirror,
- 27:27which tilted so that I saw the reflection of a side hall. That's right
- 27:33now, feel one last question, why did Odin move the body? Well,
- 27:38if it's the last, I'll answer it. Because he didn't want Howard's
- 27:41death to appear a murder on the night the bonds was stolen. It was
- 27:45better if he died accidentally. It wasn't connected with the theft. Oh I
- 27:48see, yeah, well now look miss Yeah, but miss Lamberg, yeah,
- 27:56Miss Lambrigger, really, Miss Slamberger, I have a long minute,
- 28:10I'm sure. Goodbye girl. When I got outside, the silence was deafening.
- 28:33Then I remember that I still had a client up on Roxbury Drive who
- 28:37I had to see, and that they were automobiles to be exchanged, and
- 28:41maybe if I could find them some right words to say to a girl had
- 28:45a very rough night. So when I started driving that way slowly, But
- 28:49ten minutes later, when I was halfway there, I stopped, turned around
- 28:52and headed back to three to ten, No Normaldy and my thirty eighth that
- 28:56I'd forgotten after a handful of policemen had finished. Example, it wasn't until
- 29:02I was at Agatha Lambriga's front door again that I realized something more important well
- 29:07than did odem. This killer grabbed me the shield Judith and told Marrow he
- 29:11had guff enough. Yes, well I could get my gun another day.

- 31:18Well, this was a really fun episode. There's a lot that I
- 31:21really liked about it. The whole title, of course, has a double
- 31:26meaning. Busy body could be seen to refer to Agnes. It could also
- 31:30be a reference to the body keep getting moved around. I love the concept
- 31:36of Agnes taking a role in this case and being the one who asked the
- 31:41final questions of the episode, which is an interesting change from always being the
- 31:45client or a beautiful lawn. And I thought the way the intro line was
- 31:51read was perfect and really just a very well done episode overall, with a
- 31:56nice twist on Philip Marlow. All right, well that will do it for
- 32:00today. We will be back tomorrow with Nick Carter, and then next Wednesday
- 32:05join us for another episode of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. In the meantime,
