- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Teleka Tech Podcast powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_05: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what's up, man?
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: Steven, I'm gonna ask you to do one thing and one thing only.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: And that's play the song for Lady Raiders that just clinched their first ever Big 12 title in the regular season, my sir.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: Fair.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: We are absolutely playing the song.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: They're winners.
- 1:09SPEAKER_05: We're playing the song.
- 1:11SPEAKER_07: Red Raider coming into the play.
- 1:15SPEAKER_07: With a few.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Soccer's the only sport that matters.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: We all know this.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Football school in the pretentious jackass way.
- 1:36SPEAKER_05: Football.
- 1:38SPEAKER_05: I watch I watch the Premier League.
- 1:40SPEAKER_05: Alright.
- 1:41SPEAKER_05: I get up at 6 a.m.
- 1:42SPEAKER_05: on a Saturday to watch my arsenal play Chelsea.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: It's not a field, it's a pitch.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about this.
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: It's not a game.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: Can we talk about this match?
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: I understand liking enjoying soccer.
- 1:59SPEAKER_05: How can you have any sort of fandom if you are an American-born person, never associated with England whatsoever, and be a diehard man you guy, or be a diehard like Tottenham hot spur guy?
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, diehard is one thing, but I can absolutely understand the interest in it.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: It's a really intriguing system.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Their professional soccer system is really intriguing, like the four levels where you can move up and down.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: That's really, really cool.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: And since it's the Premier League, it's the best soccer players in the world.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously, I'm gonna have a whole bunch of people arguing with me about Spain, Italy, and Germany.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: But you know, you can see why people would want to do that.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: It's like watching the NBA versus the Euro League, you know?
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: But I nobody watches the Euro League.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: That's I know, but it's I'm just like kind of comparing the MLS to that.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, the MLS is good, don't get me wrong, but it's it's not that level, is what I'm trying to say.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I guess it's it's like comparable to like Europeans watching the NBA or watching.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: That's what I mean.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: That's what I mean.
- 2:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay, okay, okay, okay.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: I yeah, not a soccer guy, sorry.
- 2:56SPEAKER_05: But I am a Texas Tech Soccer guy and Texas Tech Soccer, Big 12 champions.
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: I don't know the last time we won the Big 12, but we've never we've never won the regular season.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: Oh, well shit.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: This is this first time.
- 3:10SPEAKER_05: Great first time to do it.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: We love it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: The ladies absolutely killing it this year.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, undefeated in Big 12 play.
- 3:17SPEAKER_05: They did tie twice, but did not lose.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: Not a single time at home either.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: So just seriously a season of dreams here, man.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Uh, rolling into the postseason top 10 on any ranking you're looking at, dude.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: It's just things are feeling pretty gosh darn good in the LBK when it comes to that to that sport, which we should never neglect because that with the those ladies should be so proud of themselves.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: Coach Stone has done amazing work this past decade, and we got a really great set of coaches uh around the campus.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: So it's just really great to see these young ladies get it done.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: No doubt.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: Season's not over.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: Season is not over.
- 3:49SPEAKER_05: Big 12 tournament starts October uh October 28th, I think, 27th.
- 3:57SPEAKER_05: The first game for Texas Tech won't be until October 30th, because we are the one seed in this tournament.
- 4:03SPEAKER_05: We play the winner of Baylor Cincinnati, who will play in that first round of games.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: Uh if we win that game November 1st, we would play the winner of Texas, West Virginia, who are the four and the five seed.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: And then if we win that game, November 4th is the championship against you know one of the other half of the conference, BYU, TCU, likely, I think they're the two and the three seed.
- 4:26SPEAKER_05: So um Texas Tech Soccer doing doing the damn thing.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, with that, with that, you're just stacking bragging rights.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: It's the same thing in basketball, where it's it's the postseason tournament's great to grab a trophy from, but everyone really cares the most about the regular season.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Um, but um adding more hardware doesn't suck, adding more bragging rights doesn't suck.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: But what you're trying to do right now is obviously really trying to build up that resume for the postseason uh tournament.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: So congratulations, ladies.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: Let's keep it rolling and let's grab two trophies in one season.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: I would not suck.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: Absolutely killing it, taking away the pain that is American football.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Uh where do you want to go?
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: You want to go, you want to go football, or do you want to talk about the new the new branding here for Texas Tech?
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: Steve.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: What what why are you leaving this decision with me, dude?
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: You wanna I say we do the branding first.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Let's leave the disappointment for later.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: Adidas school.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: Starting summer 2024.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: Pat according to known college football insider Patrick Mahomes announcing that Texas Tech will be officially become an Adidas school starting in the summer of 2024.
- 5:37SPEAKER_05: Um, first off, for you, how do you feel about this move?
- 5:42SPEAKER_05: Are you happy we are leaving Under Armour?
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: Are you more happy about joining Adidas?
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: What are what are your kind of thoughts?
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: My thoughts with this is I'm happy about joining Adidas because I feel like you can really milk the Patrick Mahomes influence in it, especially with football.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, with other sports, I don't know how much you know it changes things, but with football, I feel like you're gonna be able to get all these exclusive, more Patrick Mahomes influence unis and gear.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, because I guarantee you, as soon as we are in uh like officially partnered with Adidas, they're gonna they're gonna make those shirts that he always wore with the duct tape over it like an actual shirt.
- 6:18SPEAKER_05: I can't absolutely, absolutely copying one of those.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: They're totally gonna do that.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's you you have the best player alive.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: You must you have to ride that train every which way you can.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: And so I'm I'm on board with it, especially from a football standpoint.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: What about you?
- 6:34SPEAKER_05: I love the move.
- 6:35SPEAKER_05: I love moving to Adidas, I love partnering with Patrick Mahomes, I love moving on from Under Armour.
- 6:40SPEAKER_05: I think the I I we've said this for a while now.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: As soon as these rumors were, I think we talked about in the offseason.
- 6:47SPEAKER_05: I I like being in Adidas or a Nike school over an Under Armour school.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: I think there's better products that are made from the other two.
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: I think that Under Armour is a less cool brand.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: Um, and it's all about being hip and cool in this new Big 12, according to Mr.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Yormark.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I love the move.
- 7:05SPEAKER_05: I love that we're doing it.
- 7:07SPEAKER_05: Where the controversy that happened on Twitter uh when I was flying home from a wedding I was at this weekend, I put on Twitter, I put listen, we all have to start coming to grips with the fact that Patrick Mahomes' logo is ass.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: It really looks bad, it looks horrible, and I don't want to put his brand on the jersey.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: I don't want to do that, and it's strictly from a stylistic standpoint because I'm not gonna be upset if we put his logo on the jersey and we become the first like Patrick Mahomes brand school per se.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Um I think it's innovative, I think it's a pretty cool idea.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: I just think the logo is stupid.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: I really think the logo looks like shit, and it's gonna look like shit on the jersey, and it's not gonna have people aren't gonna recognize it like I think people seem to think they are.
- 8:03SPEAKER_05: Like, yeah, we know what Patrick Mahomes' logo looks like, but that recruit coming up from high school is gonna look at it and be like, what brand is this?
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: What is going on here?
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: This is not the jump man logo that we're talking about.
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: This is Patrick Mahomes' personal logo that is put on a few Adidas products that nobody knows what it looks like, except if you're a Texas Tech fan.
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: So go ahead.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Steven, a few a few thoughts here.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: I personally think the gladiator-looking Patrick Mahomes thing is kind of cool looking.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: But it's not here's here's the thing, though, is it feels like people like you are way more opinion than people that are neutral or like it, like way more so.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: Like it disgusts you by looking at it, and I just I really don't think it's all that bad.
- 8:47SPEAKER_05: It didn't, it's a it's a logo, it's not gonna like trigger me or something.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: It it's bad.
- 8:53SPEAKER_05: It looks like how much can you do with PM?
- 8:55SPEAKER_05: You know, like that's you can probably do something better than that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, I guess until the the the collab with bar pm and patrick mahomes happens.
- 9:04SPEAKER_05: I don't know that now that I can get behind.
- 9:07SPEAKER_05: We're 100% down with the bar PM Patrick Mahomes logo.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: Why has nobody thought of this?
- 9:11SPEAKER_05: We just came up with a million dollar idea.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: There it is.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: The the logo first off, why gladiator?
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: I don't get it.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: There's no the connection you could do that with the M and the P.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Like you're able to do that with the M and the P.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: I see why they would do that.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: What like the way the P, the P and the M they form the gladiator helmets.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: No, I understand what it it how it makes how it looks like a gladiator.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: What's the connection?
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: Is Patrick Mahomes a big fan of the movie?
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: Is he it's a good movie?
- 9:43SPEAKER_06: Really good movie, either.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: It's a good movie, yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: But like why why why does it look like that?
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Why did he choose that?
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: What he's not this gladiator, he hasn't that's no there's no significance to that branding with Patrick Mahomes being a gladiator, being whatever he's going for here.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: I don't know, a Roman soldier or whatever.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: It doesn't make any sense, and it looks bad.
- 10:06SPEAKER_05: We need to come to grips with this.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: It looks bad.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: You know, it may not be so much Roman gladiator as it is Greek hoplites, if we really sit here all right, history guy over here.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: But um no, okay.
- 10:18SPEAKER_02: This this is this is where I'm gonna go with this then.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, I know you're just comparing it to the jump man, and you're like, this is not the jump man.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's not the jump man, nothing's ever going to be the jump man at this point.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: It's the first to ever do it, okay?
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: We're never gonna we're never gonna re-re-capture that.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: But if you're thinking that you needed to do some sort of uh air uh the jump man like mirror of like him doing some sort of sidearm diving uh logo instead of his initials, I don't think that's necessary because it feels like you're just straight up bogarding it at that point.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: You don't need to do that, you know, posery.
- 10:49SPEAKER_05: You you know what's gonna come to brand putting the three stripes on the jersey, but that looks good, but they're trying to get the athlete brand behind that he is already involved in this, he doesn't need to go on the jersey, you can put his stuff elsewhere.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: He is going to wear Texas Tech branded Adidas stuff all the freaking time.
- 11:11SPEAKER_05: Like, you don't you don't need to put his logo as your branding on your jerseys.
- 11:17SPEAKER_05: And why would you what what are you gonna put it on the football jerseys, the basketball jerseys, the baseball jerseys?
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: No, you don't need to do any of that.
- 11:24SPEAKER_05: You can just have your three stripes on your uniform, make it look good, have Patrick Mahomes be aligned, make your Adidas times Texas Tech gear.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, some of it you can put his shitty logo on.
- 11:35SPEAKER_05: Great, you don't need to put it on the official uniforms that Texas Tech is going to play in.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: No, Steven, this this is what you do.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: I'm with you for your workhorse standard jerseys across all sports, especially basketball.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: You go Adidas like flat out.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: You just do the three classics, the classic three stripes.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: But one game a year, you do the Patrick Mahomes jersey.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Seriously, one game a year, and you have Patrick Mahomes do the marketing for it and everything, like him wearing it and everything.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Like have him just come in, come to Lubbock, do a photo shoot with it, have him design it or have a big say in it, and have him, you know, with his millions and millions of followers be like, here's my Tex Tech jersey.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: There's they sell that jersey with the PM on everything.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: I think that's how you do it because I think at that point it's cool because it's a wild.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: That's a good idea.
- 12:23SPEAKER_05: That's a good idea.
- 12:24SPEAKER_05: They just came up, we just compromised here and we're now on the same page 100%.
- 12:29SPEAKER_05: I like that idea.
- 12:30SPEAKER_05: I like that he comes back for a big I don't say it's homecoming, say we're blacking it out or whatever.
- 12:37SPEAKER_05: Patrick Mahomes has a quote unquote hand in designing the uniform, he puts it all over social media the week leading up.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: I love that idea.
- 12:45SPEAKER_05: We sell all the merch in the world at Red Raider outfit or what the official bookstore, who cares?
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: But what I don't want to do is instead of the three stripes logo, put Patrick Mahomes' logo.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: I if it looked better, and that may be petty, I don't know.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: That may be small-minded to think this.
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: The logo looks bad and it's not recognizable, it's not iconic.
- 13:12SPEAKER_05: I am not saying that Patrick Mahomes is not an iconic figure in the sport of football.
- 13:19SPEAKER_05: I am saying his logo is not well known and not iconic enough to put on the branding for the uniform.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Not right, but not yet.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: I'm not going to be.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: I know that.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: I I know it's never gonna be the jump man, but what I'm saying, like when I'm not a sports historian here.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: You would know more about this than I would.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: At what age did Michael Jordan have his jump man and when did it really take off?
- 13:41SPEAKER_05: It's it took off his rookie year.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: He sold a billion shoes.
- 13:44SPEAKER_05: His rookie year.
- 13:46SPEAKER_05: His rookie year when they put it on the shoe on the Air Jordan one is when it took off.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: But okay, but I mean again, that is it's a one-off because it's a different story.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: He's the first one to do it at the same time.
- 13:58SPEAKER_05: Sure, there's a lot of differences between the jump man and Patrick Mahomes putting his stuff.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: What I'm saying is that that logo will never be what the jump man logo is, it just won't.
- 14:08SPEAKER_05: And it's never going the Jordan, the Patrick Mahomes brand is never going to be the Jordan brand.
- 14:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's never gonna happen.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: And now you're talking different sports here.
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: I think basketball players are a little more marketable individually than football players are because there's less guys on the field, you see their face all the time, you see them doing crazy shit in the air.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: So that's a whole different conversation.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Well, do you do you do you think uh I don't know if it's a hot take to say that Patrick Mahomes is the most famous athlete in the country right now?
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: Is that a hot take?
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: I think it is.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it is.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: Do you think it's I mean, I feel like LeBron James is kind of a legacy pick for it.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Well, you don't think with the younger crowd, people are.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: Steph Curry is still playing.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: Steph Curry is more than Steph Curry more famous than Patrick Mahomes.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: I think more people know Steph Curry's name than they know Patrick Mahomes' name.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: Interesting.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: Tom Brady.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, you know more about this than me.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: Even Tom Brady when he was still playing.
- 14:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, Tom Brady right now would be more well known than who Patrick Mahomes is.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: I don't know about with the little guys anymore because you gotta think about the little kids.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: The little kids are growing up watching him play.
- 15:06SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying Patrick Mahomes isn't well known, I'm just saying there are there are more marketable players than Patrick Mahomes right now.
- 15:15SPEAKER_05: But this makes me seem like I'm anti-Maholmes.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: I'm not anti-Maholmes.
- 15:20SPEAKER_05: Everybody that is a Texas Tech fan loves Patrick Mahomes.
- 15:24SPEAKER_05: That doesn't need to be said.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: For some reason, when you criticize one thing about this guy's branding, some people think that you're like you hate him, or you are you are Logan, you you think he's trash.
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: You should see the comments that I'm getting on this one post.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: So some people are so butthurt by just saying that his official logo.
- 15:44SPEAKER_05: I don't people were butthurt, but plenty were, and there were also plenty that were on my side.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: So, like, there was one guy who was like, just here for the ratio.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: And it's like, if you look, if you look at the comments, it's really 50-50 on I totally agree with you, or you are ass, you are the worst, though.
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: Patrick Holmes is the best thing to ever happen.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: But you're saying facts right now.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: I'm saying facts in the tweet, is what I'm saying.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: Facts.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: His logo stinks, does not need to go on the uniform.
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: I love the partnership.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: Uh one game, that's fine.
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: We came up with a great idea.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: You came up with a great idea that we've said on this podcast that I am now claiming.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: So fantastic.
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: We should be lead marketers for Texas Tech.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, we've we've always said this.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: We're very smart people, so we we do great things with the marketing team 100%.
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: Uh I hope this cleared it up because there's some people that are still commenting.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, say Stephen, I I think uh way more so than football.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: I'm more excited about this for basketball, if I'm being honest, than than I am for football.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Because I I really don't know how much more Adidas has over Under Armour as a cool brand in the sport of football, but I feel like in basketball, it's unquestionable that Adidas is a bigger brand than Under Armour than that sport.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Without with like with zero question.
- 16:56SPEAKER_05: Easily.
- 16:57SPEAKER_05: Under Armour has Steph Curry as one of their spokesmen, and they still don't sell the shoes.
- 17:02SPEAKER_05: So it's not Under Armour.
- 17:04SPEAKER_05: The basketball gear has been pretty rough.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: And as you can see from our conversation a couple weeks ago, the new basketball uniforms are not great.
- 17:13SPEAKER_05: They're not they're not nice.
- 17:15SPEAKER_05: They but got that UA logo on there.
- 17:17SPEAKER_05: It's not a basketball brand.
- 17:18SPEAKER_05: Under Armour has not been a basketball brand since probably like 2003.
- 17:23SPEAKER_05: So, yes, I do think it'll make the biggest impact in just how the basketball uniforms look.
- 17:29SPEAKER_05: Like, I was fine with the Under Armour football uniforms.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: The shoes are gonna be great in basketball.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: Adidas is a much better basketball shoe than Under Armour.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Nike would have been the best, but hey, I'm cool with this.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: I'm I think we're both aligned on the move, is a good deal.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: I I'm with you.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: I I'm not one of the people that had any real beef with under armor.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: I didn't know.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: The way the the the way I'm with it now is just Under Armour just has an image problem right now.
- 17:57SPEAKER_02: And it just it's not cool.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: Like it's the kids all think Nike is cool.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: And if you're gonna if you're gonna do a hierarchy, I think it's safe to assume that Adidas is cooler just for the fact that they're they're just way more out there.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Like they're there, they're there's so much more around than Under Armour is.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Under Armour is definitely more of a tertiary brand.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Um, and I don't I never had to beat with any of their stuff, but what will be kind of cool is all of our under armor gear is about to come vintage like instantly.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of cool.
- 18:23SPEAKER_05: But yeah, it is cool, it is cool.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: Um, side effects.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: No, I mean it's yeah, I'm gonna buy the first Adidas jumpsuit that comes out, the first Russian that comes out two piece sweats and all.
- 18:36SPEAKER_05: I'm the I'm there, the matching set with the Stan Smiths.
- 18:40SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be great.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: I am hyped.
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: As you know, Adidas is my kind of go-to everyday casual shoe.
- 18:46SPEAKER_05: I've been sure absolutely is three stripes, the three stripes.
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: It's it's a cool deal, cool brand, way to go, Texas Tech.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: That's why I thought you're gonna be, I thought you're gonna be more excited about it because of that.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Like, I've always seen you as an Adidas guy.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: And I think it was I think it was because like whenever we were growing up, NBA was Adidas, right?
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Like for the for the most of it, was it not?
- 19:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they switched to Nike in I want to say it was like 2014 or 15.
- 19:11SPEAKER_05: Doesn't that make a difference?
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: And you were most obsessed with NBA in high school, easily.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 19:15SPEAKER_05: I mean, I grew up a Spurs fan.
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: I grew up in San Antonio, that's the only professional team we had.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I'm I'm even still to this day, I'm more of a basketball guy than I am a football guy, just generally speaking.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: I know more about it, I watch it more.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: It's it's my favorite sport, yeah.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: So, yes, I love this move.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just just one last thought on this.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: I think what this means though is once we do a shift, you'll see like a complete rebranding in how all of our jerseys look.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Because you know, we we've been kind of running with a pretty familiar scheme for the past decade or so.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: So I feel like you're gonna see a big shift happen.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: And I don't know why I should be nervous or excited because I kind of like the way our jerseys look, I think they look fresh for the most part.
- 19:54SPEAKER_05: So there that's a it's a controversial take because a lot of people don't like our base jerseys, which I've never kind of agreed with.
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: I think they're fine, I think they're good in football, I think they're good in basketball.
- 20:04SPEAKER_05: Like the new ones in basketball, I'm a little more in on.
- 20:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think the last few years have been fine.
- 20:09SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I'm not really worried.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: I we have seen Adidas make some bad uniforms in the past.
- 20:16SPEAKER_05: There's been some bad AM uniforms, there's been some bad Florida uniforms.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: I think they're both Adidas schools.
- 20:23SPEAKER_05: So Adidas has missed in the past.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: So I'm hoping at least a base uniform, they you know, stick it pretty cool, pretty clean.
- 20:32SPEAKER_05: Um simple, simple.
- 20:34SPEAKER_05: You don't need to go too crazy.
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: You have a great colorway that you're working with, red and black.
- 20:38SPEAKER_05: You can't, it's hard to miss with red and black.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: So, you know, we'll see.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: It's just another another tidbit there.
- 20:45SPEAKER_02: So I again I think we're both aligned here.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: I think it's I think it's a it's nice to hit a fresh start, you know, kind of hit a reset button, especially with everything that's going on in the sport.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: And like we keep saying, Under Armor just unfortunately just doesn't seem to be cutting edge anymore.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: It used to be the shit when we were kids, but now it's it doesn't seem to be on top of the game anymore.
- 21:03SPEAKER_05: No, it's definitely on the downswing more than the upswing.
- 21:07SPEAKER_05: But um speaking of hitting kind of a pause on things, it's bye week for Texas Tech football.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: Praise God.
- 21:17SPEAKER_05: The bye week blues.
- 21:18SPEAKER_05: We don't have to be subjected to our Saturday being ruined by a bad showing for this week.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: Now, we do play TCU the next Thursday, so it's not like a true bye week.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: We don't get like those extra three days that most other teams get.
- 21:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's fine, whatever.
- 21:37SPEAKER_05: I I'm gonna be honest with you, I haven't watched the last two games.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: And I I've watched bits and pieces of Kansas State, but the last two weeks, we had my mom's surprise birthday party, and then I had a wedding last weekend, so it's been difficult to watch, and I'm kind of glad I haven't watched them because yikes on these scores.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: Um what I do know is that this is unfair.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: There's no way that we have another quarterback that's injured.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: But there's no way that we're being subjected to start our third string for like the third year in a row.
- 22:09SPEAKER_05: It's becoming just unfair at this point.
- 22:13SPEAKER_05: I can't be mad.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: It's just unfair.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think that that really captures the feelings big time.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: I know uh as fans, we're really looking for somebody to blame.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Like who do who's whose fault is this?
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: But honestly, guys, it really just feels like this is the football gods' fault.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: You know, just this just straight up luck as a knock on our way, any weight, shape, or form.
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: Obviously, we can sit here and say, hey, well, we had a healthy team at the beginning of the year, and the record wasn't good then either.
- 22:40SPEAKER_02: So obviously, there is some questions to be asked any which way.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: But right now, you are your most important position on the field is a true freshman, like literally in high school last year.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: So sitting it sitting there in government class, uh just uh goofing off.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: But now he is out there in P5 stadiums trying to do his best to put to uh to close out games.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: And unfortunately, as we've seen, that has led to an O and two start for our Jake strong friend here.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: And uh, I'm with you, man.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: It's just it's so frustrating just because it's so out of our control, and that's the worst way to lose, is whenever it's just flat out of your control.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: It's never where you just get smashed because you suck, but we're we're not losing because we suck, we're losing because of the luck, we're losing because of uh none of our players are healthy.
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: And what the heck can you do about that?
- 23:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's it's the one position that you just can't let get hurt, like it's the one position that seems to always get hurt for us.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: And there's it's pretty unbelievable that they navigated it last year and we were so successful with the quarterback situation injury situation that we had last year.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: I mean, it you know, so there's a lot of things we can go about.
- 23:55SPEAKER_05: I think the most frustration people are trying to find somebody to blame.
- 24:01SPEAKER_05: Like you said, it's just kind of what what it is at this point.
- 24:04SPEAKER_05: You know, you're starting a true freshman quarterback, you're not gonna win Big 12 games playing a true freshman quarterback.
- 24:10SPEAKER_05: Um yet some people look at Kansas State and say, well, they played a true freshman quarterback.
- 24:15SPEAKER_05: Well, that guy's much more prepared.
- 24:16SPEAKER_05: They have a very serious offensive line over there.
- 24:20SPEAKER_05: Their defense played great.
- 24:21SPEAKER_05: It there's a lot of different factors.
- 24:23SPEAKER_05: They're looking at Joey now.
- 24:25SPEAKER_05: I've been seeing a lot of Joey uh people turning the corner a little bit on Mr.
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: McGuire here uh the last several weeks because they don't have anybody else to blame.
- 24:35SPEAKER_05: That at first it was Kitley, now it's like, okay, it it was Shuck, and then it's back to Kittly, and now it's like you can't blame the true freshman, so let's just blame the head coach.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: So it's it sucks.
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: We're we're in a really shitty situation, man.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: I can't, there's no way to really go around that right now.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: It's it's really easy to jump to the head coach because at the end of the day, the uh the buck does stop with him.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, ultimately, if you're gonna place blame on anybody, the most logical person to put blame on with anything in the football program is indeed the head coach.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: It's all under his watch.
- 25:08SPEAKER_02: But the situation that we have right now is just so completely out of everybody's hands that laying blame on people is just quite frankly unfair.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: And I realize that the sport is unfair.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: You know, there's our there are winners and losers, it's not like everyone gets to go home with the trophy anymore.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's it I I know you're I know you're you're thinking it's crazy to blame Joey Maguire, but at the same time, do you not feel the honeymoon uh essence floating away at this point?
- 25:39SPEAKER_05: Sure.
- 25:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think naturally when you have a digression from previous success, and you brought back basically the same team, all that's true on paper, but when you realize that you've had to switch quarterbacks twice again, I mean it's like it's like what are you gonna expect, man?
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: What are you gonna expect when you have a true freshman starting a quarterback?
- 26:00SPEAKER_05: You're not gonna go into Provo and win, you're not gonna finish off Kansas State.
- 26:05SPEAKER_05: Um, people want to blame Zach Kitley.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: Zach Kitley didn't turn the ball over eight times in the past two games.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: Joey Maguire didn't turn the ball over eight times these past two games.
- 26:15SPEAKER_05: Now you could go even deeper and be like, well, these guys need to get their players prepared.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: Sometimes the players make mistakes, you know?
- 26:23SPEAKER_05: It's a combination, is what I'm trying to say.
- 26:25SPEAKER_05: It's not one guy to blame here for our unfortunate record.
- 26:31SPEAKER_05: It's a whole lot of different pieces.
- 26:32SPEAKER_05: It was Tyler Shuck underperformed a little bit.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: Zach Kidley didn't call the right plays in certain games this year.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, we didn't use Taj Brooks enough.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: You know, we didn't we're starting a true freshman.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: We keep getting players that are getting hurt.
- 26:45SPEAKER_05: It's like there's so much going wrong that it's it's just like I don't know who to blame at this point.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: I'm just upset.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Um, I think we're going to attempt to put into words the comparison between this season and last season and the attitudes of the Texas Tech Red Raider fandom um and why I feel so different this year.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Um the reason why, especially at this point, last year wasn't a blast.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: It wasn't so much fun because of the eight-win record.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: It was only seven wins coming out of the season, and then it was a week, we got up to eight with the bowl game.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: It wasn't because of that record.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, that record is pretty mediocre in the grand scheme of things.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: That's like it's it's a decent season, if you want to put an adjective to it.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: It was fun because every single weekend you had a shot.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: Every single weekend, you're going to every game knowing that we're gonna at least keep it close.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: That we were gonna we're gonna at least give it, give him our damn best shot.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: And if we lose, it's gonna be by pretty slim margin.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: It's not gonna be disgusting to watch.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: This year, unfortunately, it has not felt that way.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Like these past two games, especially once Barron Morton got hurt.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: I had no hope that we were gonna beat BYU the last weekend.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: I was like, it has to take a miracle.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: BYU has to play like shit.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: They have to turn over a bunch.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: Like it, it's there's no way we we can pull this out.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: And same with K State.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: Whenever Baron got hurt, I was like, this game's over.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: You could there's no way you can rely on a freshman to do this.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Um, so I just feel like we are at such a futile stage in the football season that's just no not any fun anymore.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: So it's it's it's like I'm not pointing blame.
- 28:29SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying I feel like that is the comparison of the of the the whole aura between these two systems, these two seasons right now.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: Well, and let's be honest, the difference between this season and last season are expectations.
- 28:43SPEAKER_05: We didn't have any expectations going into last year.
- 28:46SPEAKER_05: You know, we were just hoping to make a bowl game, you know, show some improvement, potentially win a few more games, you know, see that Joey's got a good culture going, playing each game, everything like you said.
- 28:56SPEAKER_05: And we I think we accomplished that last year.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: This year, the expectations were sky high, they were through the roof.
- 29:03SPEAKER_05: And I've had a kind of internal back and forth with myself these last couple weeks on if that was even fair to have those expectations.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:15SPEAKER_05: Now we know who Joey McGuire is.
- 29:18SPEAKER_05: We know he is a cheerleader, we know he can sell you on basically anything.
- 29:24SPEAKER_05: We know that he's extremely, extremely overly positive.
- 29:29SPEAKER_05: That's who we know he is.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: To me, it's the fans' job to take what Joey says with a grain of side and to look at the results on the field and to look at the uh on-field product and judge expectations from there.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: It's hard to do that when you're coming out of the off-season.
- 29:51SPEAKER_05: I understand that.
- 29:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: You look you look at last season, you look at how we performed, you look at what Zach Kitley did, what Tim DeRuder did.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: So all this to say it's a fan's job to reasonably expect a record for Texas Tech and how we're gonna perform.
- 30:17SPEAKER_05: Looking back at Texas Tech football the last 10 years plus, probably 15 years at this point, there's no way in hell we should have had the expectations that we did.
- 30:28SPEAKER_05: There's just no way.
- 30:30SPEAKER_05: And even looking the last six years, where we haven't had a healthy quarterback play more than four games in a row, we shouldn't have expected that to happen again.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: But we did, and we fed into it.
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: And it's not Joey's fault that he is being positive coming into the season.
- 30:49SPEAKER_05: It's not his fault to have, it's not a bad thing, I should say, to have faith in his players and his coaching staff.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: Because what he's doing is he's building a positive culture.
- 31:01SPEAKER_05: He's building a good culture where everybody comes together.
- 31:05SPEAKER_05: Sometimes that works out, sometimes that doesn't work out, but for him, that's what he is.
- 31:10SPEAKER_05: That's what he is as a person, that's what he is as a head coach.
- 31:13SPEAKER_05: So I like that about him.
- 31:15SPEAKER_05: And I don't think he needs to change that part about him.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: What we need to do as fans is take what Joey says and be like, okay, let's slow down on some of these things.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: Or hey, I am going to buy into the hype on certain things.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: So that's what uh I've been getting frustrated about on uh the fan reaction the last couple weeks is I think we need to be uh a little more realistic about things and not just necessarily buy into everything Joey is feeding, but also Joey doesn't need to change.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: Steven, I signed up for this podcast thinking it was gonna be stupid takes exclusively.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: That was way too intelligent to for you to be just laying out there.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: I know you.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: You're not the intelligent protect, you're not the intelligent type.
- 32:03SPEAKER_05: It's not me.
- 32:04SPEAKER_05: It's not me.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: It's not you.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but I really I think you put it beautifully.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: My favorite part about that spiel was the fan expectation.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: And that you're 100% on point.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: It's our job to keep things in check because I want him to spew sunshine nonstop.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, unless obviously he's directing, like hitting on a very specific point that he wants to correct.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: Otherwise, sunshine and roses, we're gonna win every game.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: This is the greatest place on earth.
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: There's nowhere else I'd rather be.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: And you should you should feel the same way.
- 32:38SPEAKER_02: I want that to be our head coach.
- 32:40SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 32:40SPEAKER_05: That makes him a great recruiter.
- 32:42SPEAKER_05: That's the reason why we have a fantastic recruiting class coming in, is because he's the way that he is.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: Yes, are there things that have pissed me off about him saying that Miles Cole and Steve Linton are gonna be all pros in the NFL and gonna play on Sundays?
- 32:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that stuff kind of irks me a little bit.
- 32:57SPEAKER_05: But hey, I'd rather he say that than say that Steve Linton and Miles Cole suck.
- 33:02SPEAKER_05: You know?
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: And I all it says to me is that he is a fan of his guys, he is a fan of his coaches, he is a fan of his program.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: And what is fan short for?
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: Fanatic.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: So you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna act, you're gonna act irrationally whenever you're discussing these things, like we were in the offseason.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: And I it wasn't just flat out unsubstantiated.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of things to look forward to.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: But as we have said, the theme has been these past episodes is it's time to recalibrate.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: It's time to realize what's a success at this point.
- 33:37SPEAKER_02: And honestly, Steven, I think if we get to six and six, that's a massive W at this point in the season.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a massive uh that is a massive recoup from what a disaster.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: And it is, it's this has been a disaster of a season.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's one to forget.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: I don't give it.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: I know, I know it was supposed to be very special and for a lot of reasons, but this is one to forget at this point.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: And if you could just somehow get the six, and if heaven opens up seven wins, yeah, then that's a an enormous dub.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I'm not gonna lie, Steven, and in the shape of this team, I don't know if we're gonna win another game, if I'm being completely honest.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: And I'm not I'm not even just I'm not even trying to be a downer, I'm trying to be just flat-out level-headed here.
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if Jake Strong, and I'm not, it's not a knock on the kid, if Jake Strong and all the other injuries that are falling behind him is the starting quarterback for the rest of the season, six wins is a huge win if we make it there.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Because I just I don't see it happening, if I'm being completely honest at this point.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm not a downer.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: I'm not me, but I'm just trying to look at this at this at a as just real reality glasses as possible.
- 34:47SPEAKER_05: Well, it's not even it's not, yeah, it's based on just what we've seen.
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Jake Strong has not been good, and that again, it's not his fault.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: He's a true freshman being thrown into the fire playing power five football.
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: That's a really hard thing to do, man.
- 34:59SPEAKER_05: Oh, there's only been select true freshmen that have succeeded at any level.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: And with a team that's not clicking at all cylinders either.
- 35:07SPEAKER_02: Like we've been puffing all year, so it's not like he came in to this team that was winning every single game and like just annihilating opponents.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: No, we we've been we've been in a rock fight with everybody we've played, practically.
- 35:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there are, and there are parts of this team that need to be better coached.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: I'm not trying to make any excuses for Zach Kitley for Coach Juice, who the receiving core probably the most disappointing unit of this whole season.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: Um, I'm not trying to make excuses for Stephen Hambey, who has not had a good offensive line.
- 35:39SPEAKER_05: I'm not trying to make excuses for the Zarel Fitch, who has had a bad defensive line unit, or Coach Ayu, who has had a bad you know, outside linebacking core.
- 35:49SPEAKER_05: Miles Cole, those guys have been very disappointing.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: It's there are people to blame here, but overall this season, it's just it's hard.
- 36:00SPEAKER_05: It's hard to there's been so many outside factors that have affected us, and I still truly do believe in what Joey is trying to do here for sure.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: That does not change the way I feel about Joey McGuire.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: I think he is the right coach for this job.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: I think good days are ahead.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: And this hiccup of a season should have been last year.
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: It should have, if we're, you know, we I wish it was last year.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: I wish we were having the season we had last year this year.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Um, but it he obviously has a vision for this program.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: And the recruiting class, uh the recruiting class tells that whole story because um that is how you're going to win games consistently, is with the talent on the field.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: That is how you're gonna consistently win games.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: It's how powerhouses do it.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: It's not because they have these better coaches top down, it's because they have better players.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: So if we can get that going, which it looks like it is, I have zero doubts that we're gonna be looking back at the season going, what a hiccup that was.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: Thank God where we're at now.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 37:01SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 37:02SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Um, um, but one but one last thing before uh because I I can I can feel you winding down and I don't want to get too far from the coach talk.
- 37:11SPEAKER_02: Um Steven, I I don't want to be a downer here, but do you envision heads rolling at the end of the season?
- 37:19SPEAKER_02: Or do you think we just we we we just bite the bullet, take them all again, and re-roll next year?
- 37:25SPEAKER_05: It's gonna depend on who's at quarterback for me, because I think the only guy whose job is at stake is Zach Kitley.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: What about the US, the offensive staff?
- 37:33SPEAKER_05: I think they're gonna stick with it.
- 37:35SPEAKER_05: Um I you know, I I guess I could potentially see Stephen Hamby, but he's a Texas tech guy, so that makes it a little difficult.
- 37:42SPEAKER_05: So is Kitley.
- 37:43SPEAKER_05: I know, so yeah, but Kitley's in more of a spotlight because he's the OC and not just a position coach.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: But to me, it's like Zach Kidley's the guy to talk about here.
- 37:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, everybody's been kind of pissed off at him at one point or another this season.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Um my whole thing with him, Zach Kidley hasn't been the problem the last couple weeks.
- 38:06SPEAKER_05: He hasn't.
- 38:06SPEAKER_05: He's done what we've asked him to do and what he should have done, which is run Taj Brooks.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: Zach Kiddley hasn't turned the ball over eight times.
- 38:14SPEAKER_05: That's not he didn't physically do that.
- 38:17SPEAKER_05: His true freshman quarterback did that, or his running back did that, or it's so no ultimately to answer your question, no, I don't think there's gonna be any big changes after this year, but I think it does depend.
- 38:32SPEAKER_05: If Jake Strong goes and starts the rest of the year, no way does anybody get let go.
- 38:37SPEAKER_05: Now, if Barron Morton comes back into play and we're still putting up these performances, uh potentially, if we don't win another game this year, potentially.
- 38:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if we if we finish the season with three wins, potentially.
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you're right.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Uh but that's that's that's a bar that's just too low for a school at tech.
- 38:55SPEAKER_05: But that's not something I can determine right now because Baron Morton potentially had a chance to play last week.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: We're going through a bye week now.
- 39:03SPEAKER_05: If he plays against TCU and is healthy the rest of the year and we win some games, there's no way nobody's getting fired or anybody's getting fired.
- 39:10SPEAKER_05: So it's it's it's just kind of up in the air.
- 39:13SPEAKER_05: It's it's not for me to determine right now whether something's gonna happen.
- 39:18SPEAKER_05: I wish I could predict the future, but I can't.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: It's crazy how much of the season hinges on Barron Martin right now.
- 39:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's night and day.
- 39:28SPEAKER_02: Like in my head, it's Jake Strong for the rest of the year, and we're not winning any other games.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: When Baron Morton comes in, we're back in it, like 100%.
- 39:35SPEAKER_05: What I will say is that after watching what has unfolded, the first what are we, seven games in, eight games in, is Baron Morton should have been the guy.
- 39:49SPEAKER_05: That's what I can confidently say.
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: That's what I can confidently say right now is that I think Barron Morton should have been the guy.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: And and if you've been listening to this podcast, you know that we're we were Shuck guys.
- 40:00SPEAKER_05: We liked Tyler Shuck.
- 40:01SPEAKER_05: We thought Tyler Shuck should have been the starter.
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: Now I can pretty confidently say that I think Barron Morton probably should have been the starter at the beginning of the year.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: And we maybe won a couple games that we didn't at the beginning of the year with him.
- 40:12SPEAKER_05: Um, I just see the impact that that guy has, even on a bum elbow or whatever his AC joint shoulder, I guess, uh injury that he's been dealing with these last couple weeks.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: He knows how to win games and he knows he is the best opportunity for Texas Tech to get a win offensively.
- 40:31SPEAKER_05: Um and yeah, so I I think I think everybody's expectations are a little reset at this point.
- 40:38SPEAKER_02: Well, I have good news for you because I think we have Baron Morton for the next two years at starting quarterback.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: So that's that's a damn good vision to have right now.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Um, I know you're saying like maybe he balls out next year and goes to the NFL, which I'd love.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: Don't get me wrong, that means we had a kick-ass season, but I see us with two years without Baron Morton, and I love that.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: So hopefully the guy gets better because man, we need him.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: At this point, I'm just not gonna expect a quarterback to stay healthy at Texas because it's not gonna happen ever again, apparently.
- 41:05SPEAKER_05: And yeah, the football gods are against us in that line.
- 41:09SPEAKER_05: Um, so whatever.
- 41:10SPEAKER_05: We'll see.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Speaking of Baron Morton, does your wife have an opinion on short hair versus long hair, Barron Morton?
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: Um, she doesn't.
- 41:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: I haven't.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: My wife's a pet red, so yeah, that's true.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 41:22SPEAKER_05: Uh I haven't talked a lot of football with my wife lately because I'm more upset than I need to be.
- 41:29SPEAKER_05: And so I've been all in on basketball.
- 41:31SPEAKER_05: And to the listeners, I am all in on basketball.
- 41:34SPEAKER_05: Just to the lady listeners at this point.
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: All in on basketball.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: If you're asking my opinion, I think the long hair works.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: I think it does.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: He's got the wavy hair.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: It works for him.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: He's got the thick wavy hair.
- 41:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:47SPEAKER_05: No, I think I think so.
- 41:48SPEAKER_05: I uh he's a good looking guy.
- 41:49SPEAKER_05: What do you think?
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: He is.
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: Hey, what are you gonna do?
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: What are you gonna do?
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: Oh, let's not talk about football anymore.
- 42:02SPEAKER_05: How about how about well, I guess we gotta do picks.
- 42:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, all right, let's do it, let's do it.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: Recording regulating picks.
- 42:15SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's right, that's right.
- 42:17SPEAKER_05: Okay, let's do this.
- 42:20unknown: Oh my god.
- 42:20SPEAKER_05: Oh, I will give overalls.
- 42:22SPEAKER_05: Um, you're back in the lead.
- 42:23SPEAKER_05: I had a really poor week seven.
- 42:26SPEAKER_05: Um, this is very far back.
- 42:29SPEAKER_05: Uh I'm now 51 and 51 of 80.
- 42:32SPEAKER_05: You are 52 of 80.
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: So we're both doing pretty shitty.
- 42:36SPEAKER_05: Uh both doing pretty shit.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: Both doing pretty bad.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: A lot of that is due to us both picking Texas Stack in a lot of games that we've lost the shit.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: So go ahead.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: Damn it.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: Steven, all right.
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: This is the this is this is how this is gonna go down.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna scroll down the schedule.
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: I don't care if the pack or the Big 12 team comes up first, okay?
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: That's fine.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: All right, okay, go.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: All right, so OU at Kansas.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: OU is favored by 10.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: OU.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm going OU on that one as well.
- 43:06SPEAKER_05: OU's gonna win.
- 43:07SPEAKER_05: They're good.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Kansas is still playing their backup quarterback.
- 43:10SPEAKER_05: It's Oklahoma.
- 43:11SPEAKER_05: Uh uh OU's vulnerable-ish.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: I mean, I don't know.
- 43:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, they didn't play fantastic last week.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: I didn't say coming off the bye.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: But C F could have had them.
- 43:20SPEAKER_05: Some say some say Texas is their Super Bowl.
- 43:23SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 43:23SPEAKER_02: Indeed.
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Indeed.
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Some some I hope they lose.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: I hope they lose every game.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: I hope Texas every game.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: No, no matter who it is.
- 43:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm gonna pick OU over Kansas.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: All right, this one's even easier.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: U of H at K-State.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: Dude, it's the cats.
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: Give me a break.
- 43:38SPEAKER_02: I love Donovan.
- 43:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, U of H was this freaking close, man.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: I I watched that game because I was at when I was at my ET Uncle's uh house.
- 43:46SPEAKER_05: But they got boned on that fourth down.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: They got they had no reason to overturn that call.
- 43:51SPEAKER_05: And I I'm gonna go, I'll go K State.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: K State's kind of rolling at this point for sure.
- 43:57SPEAKER_02: And it's it's at it's in Manhattan.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: All right, so uh next up we have West Virginia at UCF.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: This is a trickier game.
- 44:05SPEAKER_05: This is a trickier game because West Virginia, I think they've lost two in a row at this point.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: Um the Neil Brown fired stuff is starting to, you know, the climb is people are falling off the mountain.
- 44:16SPEAKER_05: Climb is no longer trusted.
- 44:18SPEAKER_05: People are falling off the mountain at this point.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't know.
- 44:22SPEAKER_05: I think I'll go UCF.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: UCF played OU pretty good last weekend.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: Uh I'll go, I'll go with the Knights.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: I was gonna pick whoever you didn't pick, but I wanted to pick West Virginia.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: Damn it.
- 44:31SPEAKER_02: I'll go I'll go the fighting Browns, fighting Neil Browns.
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna trust the climb, I guess.
- 44:36SPEAKER_05: That team is not good.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: That team is not good.
- 44:40SPEAKER_05: They were four and two, and they still weren't good.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: Next up.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: This is a terrible game.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: Good lord.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Iowa state at Baylor.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: Oof.
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: I'm going Iowa State.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: Damn it! Yeah, no, Iowa State's gonna win this.
- 44:56SPEAKER_05: Baylor's buns, dude.
- 44:57SPEAKER_05: Baylor's buns.
- 44:58SPEAKER_05: Baylor stinks.
- 44:59SPEAKER_05: They almost lost to Cincy last week when they had no business almost losing to Cincy last week.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: I think we've noted the Baylor disappointment.
- 45:08SPEAKER_05: It's on par with Texas Tech disappointment.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Um, they're three and four.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: It's not like they're having a much worse season, that's for sure.
- 45:18SPEAKER_05: Yes, that's true.
- 45:19SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 45:21SPEAKER_02: All right, shut up.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: Iowa State.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: All right, me too.
- 45:24SPEAKER_02: I'm going clones.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, with this one, this one, this is the first game we're talking about that actually has stakes.
- 45:29SPEAKER_02: I guess I mean the OUKU does, but uh this one has real stakes, um, even in the playoff.
- 45:34SPEAKER_02: Um, Oregon at Utah.
- 45:37SPEAKER_05: Ooh.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is uh this is one spicy.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: Oregon lost uh I think two weeks ago.
- 45:45SPEAKER_05: They lost to Washington.
- 45:46SPEAKER_05: That's what it was.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: Ut and Utah beat USC and Caleb Williams, and everybody's kind of clowning Caleb Williams, which is great.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: Um I'll go Oregon here.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: Cool, I'll be fun.
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: I'll pick the Utes.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: Another pick's crazy, it's it's only a six and a half uh spread there.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, next up the Storm and Mormons are gonna go to the hippie land of Texas in Austin.
- 46:11SPEAKER_02: Ooh, that's kind of a fun game.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: That is a fun game.
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: This is a fun game.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: UT is favored by 17 and a half, so Vegas has a lot of faith in the Horns at home.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: Where are you going?
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: Now we need to talk about it.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: Quinn Ewer's not playing.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: That's hilarious.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: He's gonna be out.
- 46:26SPEAKER_02: He's gonna be out.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: I thought he was I thought he was the second coming of Jesus Christ.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: He's not.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: He's not Malik Murphy, probably gonna start this game.
- 46:35SPEAKER_05: We might see some arch in here.
- 46:37SPEAKER_05: Um BYU, man, they have looked at points, they have looked really good.
- 46:45SPEAKER_05: And again, I didn't watch the game last week.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: I'm sorry.
- 46:48SPEAKER_05: I know this is a Texas Tech podcast.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: I should watch it.
- 46:51SPEAKER_05: Good environment.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: I'm so depressed right now when it comes to Texas Tech football that I'm just not gonna go watch it.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: Are you not at the numb phase yet?
- 46:58SPEAKER_05: I feel like I'm this close.
- 47:00SPEAKER_05: Okay, I'm pretty there.
- 47:02SPEAKER_05: And you were depressed earlier than I was depressed, though.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like I was still holding on to Wyoming was a four big kick to the balls.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna lie.
- 47:10SPEAKER_05: Wyoming was a this season stinks.
- 47:15SPEAKER_05: Um I'll I'll take Texas.
- 47:20SPEAKER_05: Boo! I'll go Mormons.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Screw it.
- 47:23SPEAKER_05: No, it's screw it.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: F it.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: Football season doesn't matter anymore.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: I'm not I and I I just I can't pick UT unless it's just like unless it's just blatantly obvious.
- 47:31SPEAKER_02: I mean 17 and a half is pretty obvious, but you know, whatever.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: Let's ride.
- 47:36SPEAKER_05: I will say the only thing I want is that Barron Morton plays against Texas this year.
- 47:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, me too.
- 47:40SPEAKER_05: All I want.
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: Me too.
- 47:41SPEAKER_02: Even if even if we're even if we only had three games, only three wins.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: Because we will show up.
- 47:46SPEAKER_02: We will show up.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: Yes, I don't care if we lose to UCF, Kansas, and TCU before that.
- 47:52SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 47:53SPEAKER_05: Play Baron Morton against UT, please.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: Please.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 47:57SPEAKER_02: This next one is a bit more confusing.
- 48:00SPEAKER_02: This next one is Colorado at UCLA.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: UCLA.
- 48:07SPEAKER_02: I'm going with the Bruins as well.
- 48:09SPEAKER_02: I feel like the wheels have completely fallen off in Boulder.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: A little bit, yeah.
- 48:12SPEAKER_05: I haven't I haven't paid much attention since Colorado started uh, you know, kind of falling off.
- 48:17SPEAKER_05: So um, but they they did lose to Stanford a couple weeks ago and yikes on that one.
- 48:24SPEAKER_02: Well, regardless, this season has been a success for Colorado.
- 48:27SPEAKER_02: I think they're only supposed to win like two two games, and they've done well beyond that.
- 48:32SPEAKER_05: I kind of compare it to what we're dealing with with Joey.
- 48:35SPEAKER_05: Like our recruiting looks great.
- 48:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and Dion's recruiting is gonna look great moving forward.
- 48:40SPEAKER_05: So I'm still hyped Colorado's coming to the Big 12.
- 48:42SPEAKER_05: Yes, it wasn't gonna happen this season.
- 48:44SPEAKER_05: First three games were an anomaly for them, but hey, uh, we're here now.
- 48:49SPEAKER_05: I will still pick UCLA.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: This next one it uh is going to be a new matchup.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: Cincinnati at Oklahoma State.
- 49:01SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 49:02SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma State's kind of rolling.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: They are a little guy, and it's Alan Bowder.
- 49:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Bowman the Showman.
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: Since he's kind of buns, I'm not gonna lie.
- 49:12SPEAKER_02: We'll take the pokes.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna roll pokes as well.
- 49:15SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma State.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: Because Cincinnati is might be the worst team in the whole conference.
- 49:20SPEAKER_05: They might be.
- 49:20SPEAKER_05: I we're up there, but they might be.
- 49:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, unintentionally, we're up there since then.
- 49:26SPEAKER_05: Unintentionally, yes.
- 49:27SPEAKER_05: If Jake Strong is starting quarterback, we're up there.
- 49:29SPEAKER_05: But yeah, you know, it's just it's not shit.
- 49:32SPEAKER_05: Move on.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: This these next couple, the last two here, are kind of funny because it's the it's it's the it's the uh it's the poor orphaned pack two versus the two that are coming to the Big 12.
- 49:52SPEAKER_02: It's Washington State at Arizona State.
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: Where are you going with that one first?
- 49:58SPEAKER_05: Washington State got murdered by Arizona a couple weeks ago.
- 50:04SPEAKER_05: Arizona's not bad though.
- 50:06SPEAKER_05: No, okay.
- 50:07SPEAKER_05: A little spicy.
- 50:08SPEAKER_05: You're you're a fish believer.
- 50:10SPEAKER_05: I'm a big fisher.
- 50:11SPEAKER_05: You're a big fish guy.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: I'm a big I will I will go it's not the name at all.
- 50:16SPEAKER_05: No, it's totally, it's totally not the guy, the fact that the this guy's name is Jed Fish.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: Uh I'll go I'll go wazoo here um over the Sun Devils because Arizona State is ass.
- 50:34SPEAKER_02: Arizona State stinks.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: I will be going Washington to see it as well.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: How Arizona State won a game is a freaking miracle.
- 50:42SPEAKER_05: I don't get it.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: Alright, next up.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: Fishbowl?
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: It is the fishbowl.
- 50:50SPEAKER_02: It is the Oregon State Beeves versus the Arizona.
- 50:54SPEAKER_05: Oh no! These are two teams that I love.
- 50:57SPEAKER_05: I love the Beevs.
- 50:59SPEAKER_05: I know, right?
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: Are you Jed Fish?
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: Are you a Jedfish guy?
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: Listen, I like the fish.
- 51:05SPEAKER_05: The guy's name is fantastic.
- 51:09SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go with the Beaves.
- 51:12SPEAKER_02: I am gonna go Jedfish, baby.
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: Arizona all day.
- 51:18SPEAKER_05: My man.
- 51:19SPEAKER_05: LFG.
- 51:21SPEAKER_05: I hope Arizona wins.
- 51:23SPEAKER_05: Kind of.
- 51:24SPEAKER_05: I feel bad for the Beavs.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: I feel bad for the Beaves more than I feel bad for the Kooks.
- 51:29SPEAKER_05: Why?
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: I like the Beavs.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 51:33SPEAKER_02: They're they're having an amazing season.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: Oregon State's number 11, bro.
- 51:37SPEAKER_02: I know, they're killing it.
- 51:38SPEAKER_02: Go Beavs.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be in no conference next year.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: All day.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: No conference.
- 51:45SPEAKER_02: Did you see the news that came out for those two, though?
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: No, what happened?
- 51:48SPEAKER_02: They're gonna be in a scheduling alliance with the Mountain West teams.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: They are not officially, as of right now, they're not officially joining the um uh the Mountain West, but looks like they're about to be in this like sort of quasi-independent where they're still technically in the Pac-12 because they'll be technically still alive, sort of idea.
- 52:05SPEAKER_05: Is George Kleevkov still there?
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: Did he not like retreat to like Mexico?
- 52:09SPEAKER_05: And he's no one has seen it in weeks.
- 52:11SPEAKER_05: So I yeah, that dude, that dude is gone.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: He's like no one is quite sure.
- 52:16SPEAKER_05: He's like, I am not showing my face after all the shit I talked.
- 52:19SPEAKER_05: I am I can't I can't be there.
- 52:22SPEAKER_02: You won't replace it in my head.
- 52:23SPEAKER_02: It's the uh so whenever the uh the at the Pax Ball media days, whatever they were uh so do you have any um response?
- 52:29SPEAKER_02: Did Brett Your Mark's remarks about how perhaps they are interested in out west?
- 52:34SPEAKER_02: It was oh yeah, I remember uh the big it's like we'll think about the big 12.
- 52:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we haven't decided we're shopping there yet.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: In that moment, I was like, You're so dead, bro.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: It's like you're so you are fine.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: You are so cooked.
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: George Kleevkoff might be the most down bad person in the world, and we exist, and we exist, we exist, and he's even lower right now.
- 53:00SPEAKER_05: George, it think about this.
- 53:03SPEAKER_05: We could always be George Kleevkoff.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: Having a bad day, you'll be a guy being paid millions of dollars to drive a conference into the ground.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: Hold on a second.
- 53:11SPEAKER_05: Okay, wait a minute.
- 53:12SPEAKER_05: I would sign up for this.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: Hold on, I can do this.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: I could do that, I could do that real quick.
- 53:18SPEAKER_05: Put me up, put me up at uh SEC commissioner and I would throw that conference away.
- 53:23SPEAKER_05: This is easy.
- 53:25SPEAKER_05: Easy peasy, baby.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: Oh are we done with picks?
- 53:33SPEAKER_02: All right, so you're gonna you're gonna take us home.
- 53:35SPEAKER_05: I want to talk about positive stuff first because you and me are gonna come out with a basketball preview here soon.
- 53:41SPEAKER_05: But we need to talk a little bit about basketball because Graham McCastan came out with this first press conference of the year, first like Texas Tech official press conference.
- 53:50SPEAKER_05: And media day just happened.
- 53:53SPEAKER_05: Basketball's ramping up.
- 53:54SPEAKER_05: We play AM this coming Saturday uh in an exhibition game for the Maui River.
- 53:59SPEAKER_06: Saturday?
- 54:00SPEAKER_05: It's this Saturday.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: Is it gonna be broadcasted?
- 54:03SPEAKER_05: No, it's not broadcasted.
- 54:04SPEAKER_05: They said it's not broadcasted, but tickets are available.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: I guess if you're in the DFW area, go see it.
- 54:10SPEAKER_05: But um I'm ready.
- 54:14SPEAKER_05: I've been doing a lot of research.
- 54:15SPEAKER_05: I've been hitting the film on our Red Raiders for basketball.
- 54:20SPEAKER_05: I'll say more in the preview, but I tell you what, I think we got the right guys to be successful in year one.
- 54:27SPEAKER_05: Now, I'm not gonna get overly hyped.
- 54:30SPEAKER_05: Football has kind of tempered my expectations for what I'm expecting for basketball, which doesn't correlate, but it does somehow.
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: Um I love what Grant McCastan's doing, and I love the players that he's brought in.
- 54:44SPEAKER_05: I love the players that he's retained.
- 54:46SPEAKER_05: I think we have a lot of good coming into this year and a lot of stuff that we could be pleasantly surprised about.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: I mean I'm I I've been thinking about it all day uh after he said that we gotta put together a basketball preview soon.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: It's been on my mind all day.
- 55:01SPEAKER_02: You know, I've been I've been eyeballing the Twitter page over there, and I'm with you, man.
- 55:05SPEAKER_02: I really like Grant McCasslin.
- 55:07SPEAKER_02: And I I I really don't want I I'm really I'm really ready for our hearts not to be broken by the the basketball head coach.
- 55:13SPEAKER_02: I want a guy to uh and I'm not just saying that.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: Like I really want a guy to believe in again.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: I want a guy to trust can take us into a decade, hopefully decade plus sort of um tenure and really, you know, and believe in this program and what he does.
- 55:28SPEAKER_02: And he's been saying the right things.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: I think he is in it for the long haul.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: And if he does things right, I feel like we got a really good dude at the helm.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: So I'm really excited to see what he does with the players and see what he does with this program.
- 55:38SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna say this just like we've been harping on all episode.
- 55:43SPEAKER_05: Expectations are huge here.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: Fan expectations, it is what you think it's gonna be.
- 55:50SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, if we uh for me right now, the expectation is NCAA tournament or just missing it, but competitive in pretty much every game, which is what it should be in year one of a new head coach.
- 56:05SPEAKER_05: But this league is so freaking good that you cannot reasonably expect what we've seen the last couple years, you know, obviously excluding last year for Texas Tech, in my opinion.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: So that's what I'll say.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: We're gonna say more in the preview coming up, but uh but I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna just uh tadpole on that.
- 56:25SPEAKER_02: I'm just gonna just gonna follow the tail on that one and and say just saying that alone, that tournament making the tournament is is you know kind of where you're it's kind of the the bar area, just making it says so much about where this program is at.
- 56:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that it's saying that to a fan 10 years ago sounds crazy.
- 56:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so even just having the resources that we have now, having the guy, the new guy at the helm, the new staff.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: I am so high on the new staff of just what we are going to be.
- 57:00SPEAKER_05: Not what we're gonna be next year, but what we're going to be, because I think we got so many good guys there in that building and ready to make this program, you know, bring it back to going to Final Fours and going to Suite 16s and doing all that every year.
- 57:14SPEAKER_02: Hey, the media seems to like us again.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: So that's good stuff.
- 57:18SPEAKER_02: That's always good.
- 57:18SPEAKER_05: It's always fun.
- 57:19SPEAKER_05: Love to see that.
- 57:21SPEAKER_05: Um okay.
- 57:22SPEAKER_05: Quick before we get to song of the week, pro sports.
- 57:26SPEAKER_05: Gotta talk about it a little bit because we involved uh a couple different Texas teams playing baseball against each other.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: The missions and who the Round Rock Express?
- 57:37SPEAKER_05: The their season's over.
- 57:39SPEAKER_05: Uh, you hate to see it.
- 57:41SPEAKER_05: We're diehard mission guys over here.
- 57:43SPEAKER_05: Um congratulations to Dallas.
- 57:47SPEAKER_05: Dallas won in Dallas versus Houston, you know, as a as a neutral party from both of us.
- 57:53SPEAKER_05: Congratulations to Dallas.
- 57:55SPEAKER_05: They did it, they beat the Astros.
- 57:57SPEAKER_05: What what did you enjoy this?
- 57:59SPEAKER_05: What's going on with the with the big Texas versus Texas to the World Series?
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean, I I just stood back and watched.
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, the the the I I think the funniest parts have I'm I'm not I'm not trying to just say this as a knock on the U of H fans.
- 58:12SPEAKER_02: I mean not U of H.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I'm so sorry, guys.
- 58:15SPEAKER_02: I am so sorry.
- 58:16SPEAKER_02: The the H Town fans, but just just all like the receipts being yeeted out, which would have happened either way, but it's been hilarious, and it really has been so funny.
- 58:28SPEAKER_02: Like the like the the clowning on the bot, not built not bot.
- 58:32SPEAKER_02: Like, guys, it's not a professional team.
- 58:35SPEAKER_05: We're talking about we're talking about a team that spent like three million more dollars than the other one here, and they're saying built not bot.
- 58:42SPEAKER_05: It's kind of funny.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: It is really funny.
- 58:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's but yeah, just the the clowning that's been happening after the fact, I think it's been the funniest part, more so than what's been going back and forth.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: Like, because I feel like it's just been like mostly introspective, like, oh god, just get uh get us back home, kind of thing.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: But with the the post uh like the post final scores here has been the funniest to me.
- 59:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but it has been.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: Okay, so to me, the Astros fandom, and I put this in our group text earlier.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: Um, the Astros fandom's wild because like at the beginning of their run, we were like I was like all in on the Astros as a neutral party.
- 59:20SPEAKER_05: I was like, okay, cool, good for them.
- 59:21SPEAKER_05: They're going and winning a World Series.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: This is awesome, they're competitive.
- 59:25SPEAKER_05: This is great for Texas or whatever.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: And then the scandal came out, and they were found cheating, uh, using trash cans, using buzzers, all this kind of stuff.
- 59:36SPEAKER_05: Um, think what you want about it.
- 59:38SPEAKER_05: The then the rest of the league really pushed back, started booing the Astros at everything.
- 59:46SPEAKER_05: They stink.
- 59:47SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, you're just a bunch of cheaters.
- 59:49SPEAKER_05: And then the fan base did like a weird villain arc where they're like feeding into it and they're like, Yes, we cheated, we're still winning.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: F you and this kind of stuff.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_05: And then the Astros like fan base became insufferable as a neutral party.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_05: And so to me, at this point, seeing that version of the Astros fan base lose is awesome because you fed into the cheating, you fed into this, you were like, Oh, we don't care if we're cheating or not, whatever.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_05: Um, Carlos Correa rules.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_05: I fucking hate Carlos Correa too.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_05: That's another part of this.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_05: But what the Rangers did, they built, they bought what they needed to do.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_05: That's the story of major league baseball.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_05: Hate to break it to you, you have to spend money to win.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_05: It's what happens every year.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_05: Um, and they have Josh Young, so yeah, I was kind of rooting for the Rangers.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_05: Sorry, yes, seeing Josh go in the world series at his age is amazing.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_05: It's awesome, it's really cool seeing Josh go to the World Series.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_05: You know, the Rangers fully endorse Creed, which I am a full endorser of.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_06: Hell yeah.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_05: Hey, I was I'm a Rangers fan at this point in time.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_05: I do root for both.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_05: If this was the Astros playing against the I don't know, the twins or something, I would say yes, go Astros.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_05: But no, I I'm I'm glad the Rangers won as a neutral party.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_05: You know, the Astros are gonna be fine.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: I think they're freaking out a little too much.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_05: That's what happens when dynasties end.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, so you know, we'll see.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_02: I think I think another funny thing is, dude, I I feel like Astros Nation was 1010 convinced they were going to destroy the Rangers, like it wasn't gonna be.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, they were 100% convinced, and that's so fun.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_05: That's the funny part about it, too, is because yeah, I'm so glad they were wrong because they were so overconfident going into the season.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: They were they were they were convinced, like it was like no, like guys, you're not realize this is a professional sports.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_02: This isn't Alabama playing Kent State.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's two equally strong teams, yes.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_05: That and it's baseball too.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_05: What do you think can happen in baseball, man?
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_05: Like, you know, just some guys hit better one night, but it is it is funny.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_05: I'm glad the Rangers won.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_05: I am sorry for the Astros fans, uh, the good ones, that is.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, and you know, well, I guess we'll see.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_05: Uh well, I'm you know, we're rooting for the Rangers, obviously.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_05: Sure, sure, absolutely.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, go Low Star State, without question.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_05: Go Rangers.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_05: I will also say NBA kicks off this week, whether you're a Mavs, Rocket Spurs fan.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_05: The NBA kicks off.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_05: The the NBA kicks off.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_05: That's a figure of speech.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_05: The NBA tips tips off, bro.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_05: Whatever.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_05: NBA tips off this week.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna be glued to the TV watching Wemby tomorrow, uh, beat the Mavericks.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_05: Sorry.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_05: Uh I'm ready.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_05: I'm ready for the NBA, baby.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_05: I'm ready for basketball.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: Let's go basketball.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, yeah, I can't imagine why we'd be ready for basketball at this point.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_02: No, no reason.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_05: Football is a sport for Neanderthals.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_02: Hey, Patrick Mahomes is kicking ass.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_02: Okay, one NFL team we all get behind.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_05: So Chiefs are the only team that matters.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_05: All right, man.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_05: Let's finish her off.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_05: Song of the week.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_05: Go ahead.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_02: All right, dude.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_02: Song of the week.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna do one of uh your and I favorites.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_02: Uh love it group.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: Um, proud Tex Tech fans.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: Um, and they they they do stuff for the for the university all the time.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm gonna go with Mason and the Gentline.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: God, they have such a great sound, man.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_02: And they're such a cool story, too.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: You know, they're older gentlemen that just like finally had, you know, like, you know what?
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: Let's do this, let's do this whole band thing.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_02: You gotta admire it.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go with Sangray, the title song of the title of the of the album, Sangre.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_02: Um, and dude, you just you put it on and you feel like you're immediately in some like cool western movie where you're either on the Texas Plains or you're like down in Mexico about to do some outlaw shit.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: And it's just you feel like you just groove when you hear that like bluesy riff, like start off the song.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh yeah, let's let's go.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_02: So I'm going sangre on sangre, Mason and the gin line.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: And the mother's child is waiting in her arrival.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_00: It's called Sangre.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_05: Good choice.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_05: Mason and the gin line, you've got to love them.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_05: Local, local favorite.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_05: They're on Twitter.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_05: It's great.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_05: Great band.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_05: Um, my song of the week, couple meanings.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's a Joe Nichols song.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_05: Been listening to a lot of Joe Nichols uh as of late.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_05: I think he's a very underrated artist from the 2000s.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_05: Um, shape I'm in is my choice for Song of the Week for Joe Nichols, uh, because the shape I'm in is very mixed feelings, as you can tell from this uh from this podcast.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_05: I'm very down because of football, I'm very high because of basketball.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, but the shape I'm in is decent, and that's what I'll say.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_05: Nice song of the week, shape I'm in, Joe Nichols.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I'm doing all right.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_07: I'm doing all right, I'm doing all right.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_02: For the shape I'm in.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: You know, funny you say that.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_02: One and only time I ever saw uh Joe Joe Nichols was um opening up for Josh Abbott at the Lone Star Amphitheater while we were in college.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_02: That's a good show.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_02: I think it was like, no joke, I think it was like Cody Johnson, Joe Nichols, Josh Abbott.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_02: Like so show that dates the the that that concert for sure.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_05: That is a great that's a great lineup, right there.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's a great lineup.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_05: I'd be all in on that one, but um any final thoughts?
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_05: Any final thoughts?
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_02: No, I think I think uh I think that does it, dude.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_05: Enjoy the bye week.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_05: Enjoy the bye week, enjoy basketball, enjoy the peace.
