- 1:07Speaker 3: commitment to try to serve the people of the area
- 1:11Speaker 3: to the best of my ability and when they have
- 1:14Speaker 3: any illegal needs and receiving this it just.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Kind of.
- 1:21Speaker 3: It makes me want to work even harder and to
- 1:23Speaker 3: represent them even better than I have before. Well, I
- 1:26Speaker 3: very appreciative.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Well, you know that that is a great way and
- 1:29Speaker 2: that that speaks a lot about your ethics as well. Louise,
- 1:33Speaker 2: for the audience, kind of kind of tell a little
- 1:35Speaker 2: bit about your background.
- 1:37Speaker 1: How did you.
- 1:38Speaker 2: Say, you know, as a kid or whatever it may be,
- 1:41Speaker 2: how did you make the determination that, you know what,
- 1:43Speaker 2: I want to become an attorney.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Well, I mean I'm the only attorney in my family,
- 1:49Speaker 3: so I never had anybody that I really knew that
- 1:51Speaker 3: was an attorney.
- 1:53Speaker 4: I just went to.
- 1:54Speaker 3: College, was done with undergraduate, was not ready to get
- 1:58Speaker 3: out of Norman.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm a big o you uh.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Uh twice graduate from there, undergraduate in law school, and
- 2:07Speaker 3: I liked it so much that I decided, well, let
- 2:10Speaker 3: me see if I can get into law school.
- 2:11Speaker 4: And I just you know, decided to do.
- 2:13Speaker 3: That, went after it and uh and then I went
- 2:16Speaker 3: to work after I got out.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yeah, well, Boomer Sooner that's my alma mater as well.
- 2:20Speaker 4: So I love the.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Red tie today. By the way, Andrew, oh you pad
- 2:25Speaker 2: uh so uh what was it really that that attracted
- 2:29Speaker 2: you to to uh following the law and was there
- 2:34Speaker 2: some sort of a service behind that or did you
- 2:37Speaker 2: just find law fascinating?
- 2:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean I always thought I wanted to try
- 2:43Speaker 3: to help people.
- 2:44Speaker 4: You know, when you're younger, you.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Got this idea is that you're going to change the world,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and and and you know, then you start practicing, and
- 2:51Speaker 3: you meet people, and you do make some changes and
- 2:53Speaker 3: in some individuals lives, you know, as you're practice in
- 2:58Speaker 3: whatever area it is.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I mean, so.
- 3:02Speaker 3: I've just been driven by trying to assist people and
- 3:06Speaker 3: try to remember that on the other side of my
- 3:10Speaker 3: desk when I'm talking to that person, even though it
- 3:13Speaker 3: might be the millionth time that I'm dealing with that
- 3:15Speaker 3: type of situation, it's their one first time. So I
- 3:20Speaker 3: want to make sure that I try to make it
- 3:24Speaker 3: as as as bearable as possible whatever it is that
- 3:27Speaker 3: they're going on, and try to better their situation as
- 3:30Speaker 3: best as I can.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Once you got your your JD, your juristalker, your your
- 3:34Speaker 2: law degree, how did you get started?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Did you did you open up your own.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Firm or did you did you go and work under someone?
- 3:41Speaker 2: I mean, what what did you do after graduation?
- 3:43Speaker 4: Well?
- 3:44Speaker 3: I speak Spanish, so I decided to My brother lived
- 3:48Speaker 3: in the Houston area, so I decided to go down
- 3:51Speaker 3: there and see if I could land the job where
- 3:53Speaker 3: I could use my Spanish. I ended up starting working
- 3:57Speaker 3: in Fort Worth, N County, Texas. Worked for a solo
- 4:01Speaker 3: practitioner there and worked there for about a year. Once
- 4:07Speaker 3: I started working there, and so you know, kind of
- 4:11Speaker 3: how he was doing things and earnings that he was making,
- 4:15Speaker 3: I decided, well, you know what, I can try to
- 4:17Speaker 3: do this on my own. And nineteen ninety five, April first,
- 4:22Speaker 3: I started Lucy Orchies Law Office in Terran.
- 4:27Speaker 1: County, April Fools Day of all days.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yes, well, at least that was an indicative of the
- 4:34Speaker 2: success that you've had. So started with your practice in
- 4:38Speaker 2: Terran County in Texas, in the Fort Worth area.
- 4:42Speaker 1: What brought you to.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Bartoshell, Well, my parents moved here in nineteen eighty one.
- 4:49Speaker 3: My dad worked for Philip sixty six in Puerto Rico,
- 4:53Speaker 3: and we moved over here.
- 4:55Speaker 4: In nineteen eighty one.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And I graduated from Bartowsville High School in eighty five, and.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Then I went to or You and or You Law School.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And then, like I said, I went to Texas just
- 5:05Speaker 3: because I know Spanish and I was going to try
- 5:07Speaker 3: to use it. And so when my children were like
- 5:11Speaker 3: three or four, my parents are still here, so I
- 5:14Speaker 3: decided to move back, and uh that was about two
- 5:16Speaker 3: thousand and eight.
- 5:18Speaker 4: So I started, uh set up a little shop here.
- 5:20Speaker 3: And you know, God, you know, went through some bombs
- 5:25Speaker 3: and Bruce is struggling a little bit at the beginning,
- 5:27Speaker 3: but then.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Eventually you just uh keet working hard at it. And
- 5:32Speaker 4: I'm I'm.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Grateful to the community that they see confidence in me
- 5:36Speaker 3: and and uh and they know how I serve them.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Well.
- 5:40Speaker 2: One thing I can say is, you know, one of
- 5:42Speaker 2: our things that we do as journalists, we we cover
- 5:45Speaker 2: a lot of the things that go on in the courtroom.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And I mean I've seen you in action, and so
- 5:51Speaker 2: I know your you are knowledgeable in the law. I
- 5:55Speaker 2: know that you have your client's best interests at heart.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You will fight for them even whenever the fight may
- 6:02Speaker 2: not you know, always get the right results or the
- 6:06Speaker 2: result that you're hoping to get.
- 6:08Speaker 1: So you know, Luis, I wanted to tell you that
- 6:11Speaker 1: I appreciate that and and I mean you have had
- 6:15Speaker 1: some success.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So the type of law in which that you practice
- 6:20Speaker 2: is it criminal law?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Is is it family law? Immigration law? I mean, what
- 6:24Speaker 1: what is most of.
- 6:26Speaker 3: What I deal with is a lot of family law,
- 6:30Speaker 3: criminal law. Accidents with injury. So that's the bulk of
- 6:36Speaker 3: my work. I will talk to anybody that comes in
- 6:39Speaker 3: the door, okay, and if I cannot assist them, I'll
- 6:42Speaker 3: try to find a way to have somebody help them
- 6:45Speaker 3: or refer them to someplace where they might be able
- 6:48Speaker 3: to get the assistance that they're looking for. Uh but
- 6:51Speaker 3: those are the three areas that that comprised my my practice.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Mostly.
- 6:56Speaker 2: We're talking to Luby's Ortiz local attorney. He has been
- 6:59Speaker 2: named Best of Bartlesville, best attorney here in the area
- 7:03Speaker 2: by our our our readers on our website at Bartlesviee
- 7:07Speaker 2: Radio dot com. And uh so you have your I'm
- 7:10Speaker 2: gonna just ask you just kind of a funny question.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Maybe I'm just wondering where we had to take the
- 7:15Speaker 2: bar exam in Texas, right, and then you had to
- 7:18Speaker 2: take the bar exam in Oklahoma? Which one was more difficult?
- 7:21Speaker 2: Called to you to be successful?
- 7:24Speaker 3: Well, I just had to take it in Texas, Okay,
- 7:27Speaker 3: and once you it was reciprocated.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Yeah, the reciprocity. So I had to come here and
- 7:32Speaker 4: let the.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Oklahoma bar know that I wanted to practice here, and
- 7:37Speaker 3: then I had to jump through the hoops that they needed.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I needed to jump through and then they gave providing
- 7:43Speaker 3: me a license in Oklahoma to practice here.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Good.
- 7:46Speaker 2: So are you are you just here in district court level,
- 7:49Speaker 2: state court level or can you do federal cases?
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 7:52Speaker 4: I've never worked in federal cases.
- 7:56Speaker 3: I'm just gonna stayed away from that. That's if somebody
- 8:00Speaker 3: needs some federal help. I got some people that I
- 8:03Speaker 3: can refer them to.
- 8:04Speaker 1: There you go.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I mean, like I said, I will speak with whoever
- 8:07Speaker 4: comes in that door.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Well, since two thousand and eights, you have served the
- 8:11Speaker 2: community of Bartlosold Dewey surrounding areas. I know that you
- 8:14Speaker 2: also practice in Nowada. Yeah, so did you do some
- 8:18Speaker 2: court there? Kind of Luisa, kind of go over your
- 8:22Speaker 2: your primary area where you will serve your clients.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I mean, I've practiced pretty much a lot of places
- 8:29Speaker 3: in Oklahoma. I go as far down as Tulsa, but
- 8:34Speaker 3: I've gone to Cherokee Nation down in Tahlequah, I've gone
- 8:38Speaker 3: to Cleveland County. I go to Pony on a regular basis,
- 8:45Speaker 3: Osage County, Nowada County. I've gone all the way to
- 8:49Speaker 3: Delaware County. So I try to, you know, if somebody
- 8:54Speaker 3: needs help, and they're willing to have me represent them,
- 8:58Speaker 3: then I'll take care of them.
- 9:00Speaker 4: There you go.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So basically the entirety of northeast Oklahoma and sometimes down
- 9:05Speaker 2: in Cleveland County. You don't mind going down to Cleveland County,
- 9:10Speaker 2: especially on Saturdays.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Saturdays, absolutely absolutely.
- 9:14Speaker 2: And you just made something that that was interesting to
- 9:17Speaker 2: me that you've also represented in Cherokee tribal court. So
- 9:21Speaker 2: so that that is that is more of a specialty now,
- 9:24Speaker 2: especially you know, after McGirt and all of that, to
- 9:27Speaker 2: have an attorney that is not only able to help
- 9:31Speaker 2: you and represent you in state court, but if you
- 9:33Speaker 2: happen to be a tribal citizen, you're able to help
- 9:36Speaker 2: in Cherokee Nation too.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that's correct, because I mean we are in Indian territory.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah, so.
- 9:45Speaker 3: If the state cannot have jurisdiction because of the McGirt ruling,
- 9:49Speaker 3: then if they want me to and and they're able to,
- 9:53Speaker 3: then we'll go to.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Travel court. We go.
- 9:57Speaker 1: We'll won't stop Louis Ortiz. Hey there there we go.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I like, Hey, that's a that's a good little tagline
- 10:02Speaker 1: for nothing will stop me. I'm Louis Ortiz anyway, So
- 10:06Speaker 1: for folks who who might need your services. Are you
- 10:12Speaker 1: accepting new clients or.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I mean, my door's always open. I've got a good
- 10:17Speaker 3: digital presence. I got a website that can reach me
- 10:20Speaker 3: out and just give me a call or reach out
- 10:24Speaker 3: to me through the through the website, and I try
- 10:29Speaker 3: to respond to everybody within the day or no later
- 10:33Speaker 3: than twenty four hours.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You go, all right, what is that website, Louise, it's I.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Believe it's Luisy Ortiz Law office.
- 10:40Speaker 2: There you go, and right here in Barlowsville is where
- 10:42Speaker 2: your primary office is, and he will.
- 10:45Speaker 1: You can give him a call.
- 10:46Speaker 2: He will take care of you as you as you
- 10:48Speaker 2: heard here. He is dedicated to clients here in northeast Oklahoma,
- 10:52Speaker 2: regardless of you, if you're Cherokee Nation or if you
- 10:55Speaker 2: are you know, a jurisdiction under the state of Oklahoma
- 10:59Speaker 2: criminal court, family court, personal injury. He's got you covered
- 11:04Speaker 2: at Louis Ortiz's law offices right here in Bartolsville. Louise, again,
- 11:09Speaker 2: congratulations on being named Best of Bartlesville.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And for.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Folks who may be looking for a career in law,
- 11:20Speaker 2: you know people are we're talking graduation time. Now, what
- 11:23Speaker 2: advice would you have for somebody who is getting ready
- 11:26Speaker 2: to get their undergraduate degree and maybe thinking and considering
- 11:29Speaker 2: about law school.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I mean, you just got to follow whatever you're passionate about.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I mean, if you're passionate about law and or you
- 11:39Speaker 3: have an interest in it, then start looking at it.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Go to the courthouse. I mean, it's it's open to
- 11:43Speaker 3: the public for the most part, and just watch what
- 11:47Speaker 3: we do there and see if that is something that
- 11:49Speaker 3: you really want to get after and then just work.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You got to work.
- 11:53Speaker 2: And if you want to go to the University of
- 11:54Speaker 2: Oklahoma Law School, he will give you the best advice
- 11:59Speaker 2: to pass school there. Louis Ortiz, attorney in law, best
