Transcript
- 0:00We must be cautious. Welcome to the Nerd Party. Hi. This is
- 0:08Nick and Ostasu, story editor on Star Wars, The Clone Wars and Star
- 0:13Wars bad Batch. And you are listening to aggressive negotiation from the far reaches
- 0:25of an unreachable place. Comes a broadcast, a broadcast that you have longed
- 0:29to hear from aggressive negotiations, the Star Wars podcast on the Nerd Party Network.
- 0:35I am one of your mysterious hosts from the nether Beyond region Secret Places,
- 0:41Jedi Master John Mills. And joining me in this weird place that nobody
- 0:46can find except the people that need to at certain times is Jedi Master Matthew
- 0:50Rushing. Matt did you forget to pay the electric bill again? Because why
- 0:55is everything dark? Why can't we at least have a nightlight or something?
- 0:58I don't understand. I thought I was going to ask you why you turned
- 1:02on all these strobe lights. I'm getting a little bit sick personally. I'm
- 1:07big on atmosphere and vibe. My friend, it's very important that that's what
- 1:11that is. Well, it's hopefully you know, maybe we should put a
- 1:15warning then for anyone, so you know, as you get the warning on
- 1:21TV shows or movies, there may be flashing lights here because wow, well
- 1:26listen, you had better close the fridge door next time, because you lost
- 1:30me a whole batch of snow clones last week and I'm still pretty sore about
- 1:34it. That's a huge cost expenditure right there, and I'm not going to
- 1:38the grocery store for more of them. You are, But while you're out
- 1:42there, if you could remind people to please give us a review on Apple
- 1:44Podcasts, and to go ahead and reach out to us on the socials and
- 1:48the at the Jedi Masters, at joy nerd Pard lah La, all those
- 1:52places where you can find us. You should know them by now, and
- 1:55we'll mention them again some other place inevitably. So, Matt, we find
- 1:59ourselves again at a crossroads of a weird topic. I want to throw at
- 2:04you. It's not really weird. It's more of a curiosity thing because I
- 2:07know this hasn't really been established and I want to sort of like reason it
- 2:10out in my brain, one of the things I've always struggled with. And
- 2:15here we are. You know, by the time this drops, this should
- 2:19drop pretty much. I think. On the day that The Rise of Skywalker
- 2:23was released, so it'll be like the anniversary that it was. Just it
- 2:25was December nineteenth, right, wasn't that when it came out or something like
- 2:29that close to it? Sure, yeah somewhere Okay, I was just gonna
- 2:31say that we're gonna say this dropped on the same day. Guess what if
- 2:35you're listening to it on that day, Maybe it did, maybe it didn't,
- 2:37who knows anyway, So you know, the dead speak mysterious transmission,
- 2:43and we know that in our world there was a piece of this transmission heard
- 2:47in Fortnite Star Wars, okay, and it was mentioned in the novelization,
- 2:53but there's no real discussion about the mode of the broadcast, like how many
- 2:59devices did it appear on? Was it? Was it a broadcast? It
- 3:01took over a whole region? Did where people flying in their ships and all
- 3:06of a sudden there was a broadcast through their thing? Did sound you know
- 3:09since sound travels in Star Wars space? Was it just really loud? Did
- 3:13they just have some loud speakers floating around in the unknown regions? So I
- 3:17kind of want to come at that though, because what do you imagine would
- 3:23be the delivery mechanism that would make it possible for that broadcast to be heard
- 3:29anywhere outside of well, I mean honestly, Exegle or anybody that was like
- 3:32tuned into the right frequency. Yeah, I'm I'm gonna say it's short Force
- 3:37radio. Uh. And so it's a it's a special form of radio there
- 3:43for Force users and other people can also hear the transmissions and they still exist.
- 3:49Of course, we're used during the New the Old Republic era when you
- 3:53know, Jedi were at their height, and that's how they would contact one
- 3:55another or talk to one another. Of course, do their you know,
- 4:00famous radio programs with continue. Next week is July Master Equan Jay finds out
- 4:08who murdered the Prince. I like it. I like where you're going with
- 4:11this, baby, we got us do going. I like this. I
- 4:14like this, but I don't know why I'm fixating on it and why it
- 4:16just suddenly came out of nowhere because I'm sitting here. This may surprise you.
- 4:20We're recording this for a podcast and for people to hear this podcast.
- 4:26Technically it's a broadcast, but you have to make the conscious decision to seek
- 4:31it out and get it. And that's the world we live in now where
- 4:36we're not driving around with radios where like, but even when people were driving
- 4:42around with the radio, the idea of every broadcast channel being taken over,
- 4:46you go back to broadcast TV days, the station had to set up the
- 4:51you know, they could take it over the same time, but it was
- 4:54all on a certain frequency and that sort of Yeah, and obviously with a
- 4:58large galaxy, I'm just trying to to think, like, is it's something
- 5:01where there would be like a mesh network or something. So there's two different
- 5:05ideas. One they stole the technology from the Krytonians who did this in a
- 5:11Man of Steel where it took over all the screens, right even phones.
- 5:15Okay, so there's that. Or the second idea is that there was the
- 5:19emergency Empire system that was built into every single radio ship, anything that would
- 5:29allow a transmission to take over, just like the emergency Broadcast system takes over
- 5:33your television every week to just test. So I like where you are with
- 5:38that where there was like some sort of leftover emergency broadcast system that of course
- 5:44Cititius knew about that he exploits. Would it turn on a device like it
- 5:53would have to be something that would be standardized put into like every device capable
- 5:57of picking up a broadcast then, right, wouldn't it have to be?
- 6:00And so if he's on Exegle, was it Admiral Pride or was it General
- 6:08Pride? Was he a general or whatever Pride? Richard E. Grant's character
- 6:13did like somebody in the First Order have to flip the switch for the broadcast
- 6:16to go out? Or did the broadcast show up? Because we know that
- 6:20Operation Cinder, which has been acknowledged on screen, so we know it's like
- 6:27real, real there were those robots that went out and gave a you know
- 6:31command. Would it all like with this broadcast system? With how disparate the
- 6:38galaxy is? Do you think it's possible that like an Operation Cinder like bot
- 6:45shows up to the First Order and is like, okay, yeahn't this robot
- 6:49hasn't activated in a while, but send out this broadcast? Yeah? So
- 6:56well, I think another possibility along with this, so you know, in
- 7:00Imperial Broadcast system also comes down to the fact that you know, you knew
- 7:06that Palpatine had hideouts all over the galaxy. We know you know that of
- 7:12course from what we saw in the Aftermath books, right, they played a
- 7:17big part in that. You know, he had all these these places where
- 7:21they're gathering force relics and all this type of stuff, and so with those
- 7:27hidden all over the galaxy, you know, you could easily see how a
- 7:31signal could be triggered that would broadcast this to all of the places that you
- 7:39wanted via the Imperial broadcast system. And so I think that could work.
- 7:46That would that would be a very practical solution to it. I just like
- 7:48the fact that you're calling it the Imperial broadcast system because that's also IBS and
- 7:55you know, irritable ballo syndrome Imperial broadcast system, Like, there seems to
- 8:00be a nice symbolism there that lines up. I mean, it does cause
- 8:03irritable bowel syndrome when you hear this message, so it makes sense. So
- 8:09basically, though, we know that Pride at least was receiving messages from Sidious,
- 8:15So Pride probably had a network of people that he could activate, because
- 8:20it seems that Pride was a Sidious loyalist nested within the first Order, so
- 8:24he would have had a network of people that would have, you know,
- 8:30triggered this. But if I recall correctly, the Emperor's broadcast also is what
- 8:37sent kylo Ren in search of the wayfinder? Correct? Was that the reason
- 8:39he was looking for it? I believe so? Yes, So if Reren
- 8:46here's the broadcast, then it wasn't anybody like Reren. Wasn't the one that
- 8:50activated the signal, which has its own you know, sort of layering of
- 8:54questions. But wouldn't the Republic have moved to I mean, I guess it
- 9:01would make sense that the Republic would not have taken out any sort of emergency
- 9:05broadcast system. I mean, it's already established on screen that they're like inept
- 9:09during the Mandalorian timeframe, which I mean, heck, we even saw a
- 9:15little bit when Harah goes after you know Ahsoka, you know, on that
- 9:20mission, and you know you already see the ineptitude of you know, certain
- 9:26senators who you know want to basically pull in completely and take care of their
- 9:35own and pretend like no threats in the galaxy exists anymore. But if this
- 9:39system still existed, and we know that the Resistance is trying to get in
- 9:45contact with everybody, Lea would have known about this thing's existence. Would wouldn't
- 9:50she have used that to try to make contact with everybody? If it were
- 9:54that desperate. See that makes me wonder, like, you know, was
- 9:58the this is something like the Order sixty six conspiracy, that it's so hidden
- 10:07that this isn't something that anybody actually knows exists. It's just something that you
- 10:11know, Palpatine has worked in to every ship system, you know, every
- 10:18transmission system, everything, without anybody knowing it. In the same way he
- 10:22had worked into the clones this trigger to allow him to add I'm almost notice
- 10:30trigger them all to you know, flip the switch and murder Jedi. And
- 10:33so I see how this idea that Palpatine could speak from beyond at least that's
- 10:43what everybody thinks, you know. Somehow Palpatine returned. So his message comes
- 10:48forth and it's it's it's a reminder I think of, you know, one
- 10:56of the deeper things I'm thinking in this is strange that I'm even thinking deep
- 11:01on this, but it really goes to show this idea of how careful you
- 11:11have to be of building on something that was evil, like the idea of
- 11:18oh oh, we can still use those people, you know, like especially
- 11:22I'm thinking of you know what happens in Ahsoka, right, you know,
- 11:26we have these people who are working behind the scenes for the enemy because everybody's
- 11:31like, well, we just can't get rid of everybody that was a part
- 11:35of the empire and not really vetting anyone. And I think this just creates
- 11:39a serious problem, you know, and especially you know, we know how
- 11:43devious Palpatine was in the first place, how much he worked to control every
- 11:50single little thing and think of every nuance that could happen, so he was
- 11:54ready for it at a moment's notice, And so you know the thought process
- 11:58that's something like this could exist so that Palpatine could basically have his people flip
- 12:05the switch and he could broadcast in the entire galaxy. Hey I'm back,
- 12:11you know, like Randy Quaid in Independence Day. You know, yeah,
- 12:20I just I see this as being like completely plausible for that person. Okay.
- 12:26See, the thing is two of the things that you said have triggered
- 12:28my constant desire to like make you know, like a little comedy bit out
- 12:33of something. Where number one, you know, like the I'm back thing,
- 12:35It's like, was there a holographic component to this where it like wasn't
- 12:39just audio, So like somebody has a holographic thing on their thing, and
- 12:41like all of a sudden, the little Emperor pops up was like boo,
- 12:43haha, I'm back, and they like disappear. So it was like,
- 12:46what just happened? Right? But additionally, given the fact that we know
- 12:52that there are a thousand thousand worlds and therefore one thousand thousand species out there,
- 12:58was he subtitled or was he auto translated when it goes out there?
- 13:03I know that this is a question that could apply to just about anything that
- 13:07happens in Star Wars. But was it just him speaking what we acknowledge is
- 13:11basic, which you know we hear his English, or was there like an
- 13:15option to hit a number and be like, you know, to hear this
- 13:16message again in Moncala press two and you know that sort of thing for people
- 13:22who are out there. Or do you think Palpatine just went for broke and
- 13:24was just like, ah, if you can't hear, you understand what I'm
- 13:26saying. So like, because think about thirty years later, all of a
- 13:30sudden, you hear this broadcast. It's a voice you've never heard before,
- 13:33and somebody just be like, who's that? What happened? You know,
- 13:37like his voice wouldn't mean anything to somebody who hadn't been alive during the time
- 13:41period, right, well, yeah, I mean what would happen is it
- 13:45would you know, your messaging system would say incoming message from Emperor Palpatine.
- 13:50To hear this message in Moncala, Press one, to hear this message in
- 13:56Tweelek, press two, to hear this message in Ewoka three, to hear
- 14:01this message in Kashik. Press four, you know, a wookie press four.
- 14:05You know. It's like it would be a really long list, and
- 14:07if you missed it, it's like to repeat this list press twelve, you
- 14:13know. And it's like Palpatine is like sitting there holding a piece of paper
- 14:18like for each one and the like by like the thousand, He's like,
- 14:20eh, you know, no, see now I've got like the robot Chicken
- 14:24Emperor in my head where he's like, you know, it's like okay,
- 14:26and we need that now in Rhodian. Can't somebody else read it? Can't
- 14:31just somebody else read it? You know, obviously we're we're having a little
- 14:35bit of fun with it. But the thing is, it's like it is
- 14:37something where I would always want to square it because this transmission now I say
- 14:43it flippantly a minute ago, but it's thirty years after the war has ended.
- 14:52Palpatine's voice hasn't been heard since he died. So somebody who's twenty who
- 15:00hears this thing where it's like, at last the Sith are back, We're
- 15:03going to take our revenge, they would be like, what the hell is
- 15:07that? Right? Like and just yeah, why would they pay the attention
- 15:11to it? So I'm expecting that it sounds kind of like what you get
- 15:15in The Princess Bride, where he's like, this is Emperor Palpatin, Sorry
- 15:24about that. It's been a while since I've talked. This is Emperor Palpatine.
- 15:30Yeah you, yes, exactly listen to this message. So so okay,
- 15:35So I mean there's that aspect to it, but I think it would
- 15:39actually be here's free story idea for you, Disney. Not that they listen
- 15:43to me anymore, whatever, whatever, but wouldn't it be a sincerely interesting
- 15:50story to follow, whether in book form or comic book form or something.
- 15:56There would be people who would be quote unquote conspiracy theorists post endor who would
- 16:03say, nah, that was false flag. The Emperor never died, he
- 16:07just went into hiding, And wouldn't it be interesting to have a story like
- 16:11that where one of these people feels incredibly justified and like I've been telling you,
- 16:17I said, so you ended Thanksgiving or you ended Life Day dinner early
- 16:21because you did you were sick of hearing me go on about it five years
- 16:23ago, but I told you he's still alive. Like, wouldn't that be
- 16:27a really interesting sort of story to like you have somebody feel vindicated by the
- 16:30fact that the Emperor's voice comes back where they're like, I told you,
- 16:33I told you wasn't really dead, and I've been saying it for years exactly
- 16:40exact. But that is an interesting type of story because the thing is then
- 16:45you you wind up having you know, Star Wars Love's, you know,
- 16:48telling these sorts of relatable stories where like, you know, sometimes the conspiracy
- 16:52theory isn't the wacky thing, it's more of a spoiler alert. Wouldn't that
- 16:56be interesting? I think so, you know, obviously we've been to tucking
- 17:00mostly humorously about this whole idea, and you know, I think it's it's
- 17:04so fascinating because as we're recording this, you know, we just had an
- 17:07interview with Adam Driver come out where he was talking about you know, how
- 17:11the direction for his character changed based off of where originally they were going to
- 17:18go with with his character, which is that he was not going to have
- 17:22a redemption arc. In fact, he was going to basically be the antithesis
- 17:25to to darth Ader. And then you know too that there were actually thoughts
- 17:30of having Ray be connected to Obi Wan Kenobi at one point and before they
- 17:38finally decided on in the end, you know, her being a Palpatine.
- 17:42And so I think it just goes to show that, you know, there
- 17:47was a thought process for this whole thing, and just how messed up everything
- 17:52got because of the change and director and because you know, they didn't take
- 17:59their time and really allow somebody to come up with a story that canvassed three
- 18:04movies, and then they you know, worked on the details in the same
- 18:10way George did. Right, Like, George didn't know every single detail,
- 18:12but he did know how it started and how it ended. You know,
- 18:15he knew the and you could massage the details from there and still get to
- 18:22where he wanted to go. It's just it's too bad that that didn't happen,
- 18:26because you know, the sequel trilogy itself is not full of a ton
- 18:32of terrible ideas, it's just not well executed, and I think you know,
- 18:36that's just the place that we kind of end up with it. But
- 18:38you know, with this like it's a funny story point in the sense of
- 18:44the way we've been discussing it, but it's also something to which you know,
- 18:48when you hear that that can happen what we've seen in the Star Wars
- 18:52galaxy, you already automatically buy it because you've already seen stuff like this.
- 18:57I think immediately any Star Wars fan's brain goes to Order sixty six, right.
- 19:03The fact that you can have an order that goes out to all the
- 19:07clones relatively quickly to have them turn so the idea that the Emperor has this
- 19:14setup so that he could have a broadcast go out to whoever he wanted,
- 19:18whenever he wanted. This just seems completely within the sheave wheelhouse, you know,
- 19:25to want to have up his sleeve or you know, in his cloning
- 19:30tank. It does, man, And it's the thing is, this is
- 19:33the space where I've never been bashful about saying I don't like that they brought
- 19:38back Palpatine. I don't think it was the right move by a country mile.
- 19:44I really think it was a grossly miscalculated error. But the fact that
- 19:49we can still operate within the space and throw some of these ideas out and
- 19:55try to ameliorate it a bit is why I think some of them hero that's
- 20:00coming out will be successful in making the sequel trilogy experience feel a little bit
- 20:07more organically tied to everything right right, And that's you know, we've talked
- 20:12about it before how Star Wars telling stories nonsequentially from the get go makes it
- 20:18possible for us to go back and say, oh, okay, well here's
- 20:21an additional part of the story. We go, okay, all right,
- 20:22all right, now I'll buy you know, X, Y and Z.
- 20:26But it's just yeah, man, I think I think where I really fixate
- 20:32is on the conspiracy theory. People that could have a really interesting story told
- 20:37about them. I want to go down to the book publisher and be like,
- 20:41look, I got a book idea. Well, you know that's paid
- 20:45a lot of money, just enough that I could just like take two months
- 20:47off of work. I'll do my best. What's interesting about this whole thing,
- 20:51though, is is you and I have both read you know, Shadows
- 20:53of the Sith, right and in a lot of ways. That's kind of
- 20:56what that book is trying to do. It's trying to find a way to
- 21:02bring together a lot of the questions that were raised by the sequel trilogy that
- 21:07weren't answered and kind of pull pieces together, you know. And so I
- 21:12think that that's interesting that that was a book that happened, because you know,
- 21:18once it ended, there were still so many questions that people had,
- 21:22and it makes me wonder, you know obviously too. And I think we've
- 21:25talked about this before, but I think most fans have thought about this idea
- 21:29of you know, you have the Mandalorian series in Ahsoka and all these things
- 21:34happening in that time period, and they are building into you know, where
- 21:41we're going. We've already seen connections in that, right, We've seen a
- 21:45lot of connections, you know, these little threads of things that lead us
- 21:49into the sequel trilogy, and so, you know, it's just it's one
- 21:56of those things where I'm I'm continually interested to see the ways in which they
- 22:00will maybe find and have a possibility of these things making more sense in the
- 22:07end. But I don't know who knows, but it is fun to be
- 22:11able to have these kind of conversations. I do think, you know,
- 22:15as we've done, we've talked about the Holiday special and all sorts of crazy
- 22:19things that have happened in Star Wars over the years, and you know,
- 22:23not everything's a surefire winner, even in my beloved Clone Wars. You know,
- 22:27there are still some episodes that I'm not huge fans of, but we
- 22:32find ways to enjoy it all, or at least be able to think about
- 22:36it. And so, yeah, to be able to have a discussion about,
- 22:41you know, how Palpatine was able to contact the entire galaxy at the
- 22:45beginning of the Rise of Skywalker. I mean, that's a legit question,
- 22:52it is. And before we start going down another road where I'm like,
- 22:55well, you know, if somebody had an answering system, was it just
- 22:57like a message left on their machine. You're in the shower and you come
- 23:00out and it's like, oh, there's a message from people, one message
- 23:03waiting for you. Yes, this is Emperor Palpatine. Lou, you played
- 23:11a prank on me? Again, what's going on? But if people want
- 23:14to reach out to you, Matt and broadcast you there imminent evil plans so
- 23:18that everybody can get ready for them, and try to thwart you yet again.
- 23:22Where can they find you online? Well, you caught me monologuing.
- 23:26Well, you could find me all over social media under the name mattterssing zero
- 23:30two. Of course, here on the network, outside of aggressive negotiations,
- 23:33you'll find owl posts where I talk with drag Kauffman about every single chapter the
- 23:37Harry Potter series, one chapter time. You can also find me on the
- 23:41TFM network with a bunch of shows. The six oh two Club is the
- 23:44main place there where just enjoying all of the fantoms we love. John's a
- 23:48frequent guest. You can also find me there doing literary trecks, the orb
- 23:52Warp, five Saddle Up, and the Artificial Tango. But John, you
- 23:56know, maybe people want to do a side by side comparison of your voice
- 24:02and Emperor Palpatines. Where would they find you, Well, they would find
- 24:07me on exit go. I mean you would find me online. It's Kessel
- 24:10Junkie, isn't it com x Now ooh that's a ooh oh my gosh,
- 24:15just saying. Okay, so the first thing is the yes, a social
- 24:21media app in the Star Wars Galaxy gets updated. Oh okay, yeah,
- 24:25we got some ideas here anyway, find me is Kessel Junkie out there,
- 24:29and you can find me here on the Network hosting another show called house Lights
- 24:33with Tristan Raddell and Darren Mosa, where we look at the director the works
- 24:36of directors, because films are fun to talk about. But something else that's
- 24:41fun is going and removing all of the secret broadcasting stuff from all the equipment
- 24:48in my house and from the Jedi temple, which is going to take some
- 24:52time. So Master Rushing, I think it's time to close these negotiations.
- 24:56John, negotiations are closed. Join the Revolution, Join the Nerd Party.
