Latest / Doctor Turned Health Coach / My Simple Grocery Philosophy for Eating Better on Less
Transcript
- 0:21So my own approach to eating and eating out, groceries and all that stuff,
- 0:27I thought I would share a little bit about it.
- 0:29Maybe my philosophy, it might help some of you guys, especially if you're trying
- 0:35to save money on groceries, you're trying to eat healthier, you're trying to
- 0:38eat better, all of these things.
- 0:40So for myself, I try to keep it simple and I try to keep it to things that I
- 0:46can prepare myself. So bulk items, things that I can store easily,
- 0:51all of that is perfect, in my opinion.
- 0:54Maybe starting kind of like broad, right? Think of a huge sack of potatoes,
- 1:00a huge sack of onions, a big bag of dried beans and brown rice.
- 1:07I mean, right there, just those things alone, you could have your entire nutritional profile met.
- 1:14Literally every nutritional profile that you
- 1:17can think of is met with those items that's a big deal of course you want some
- 1:23fresh stuff right we want a little bit of fresh lettuce fresh herbs and some
- 1:30fresh fruit that's always nice but i guess for me when i shop seasonally.
- 1:37Makes it a lot easier. If I go, one of the best ways to know what's in season
- 1:42is to go to most farmers markets.
- 1:44You don't have to buy anything, but just go to the farmers market and you'll see what's in season.
- 1:48In your area, you can also look it up and see what's in season given your climate.
- 1:53And if you buy those foods that are in season, you're going to save a lot of money.
- 1:58And of course, the goal is to eat healthy, but you don't want to break the bank.
- 2:02You want to eat in a way that's sustainable.
- 2:05As we get into the winter, we're going to see less tomatoes, less fruits.
- 2:11You're pretty much never going to see avocados, right? In most part of the country,
- 2:15avocados just don't grow very well. But no, they do.
- 2:18They do for some, like California and Florida. It's not uncommon to find avocados,
- 2:23but you're probably going to spend a lot of money on avocados.
- 2:27And they're good, but they're not as nutritious as, well,
- 2:32social media claims, and they have to be flown from a very far distance,
- 2:37which means they have to be sprayed and given a lot of chemicals in order for
- 2:43them to survive these long trips.
- 2:46So one of the ways to eat very healthy is to eat the kind of things that are grown locally,
- 2:51that you can find locally, and if you live in a certain place,
- 2:55call around and see if there are any farms near
- 2:58you if there are local farms near you chances
- 3:02are they're going to have a lot of um maybe overripe
- 3:05items items that aren't as pleasing to the eye and they're going to give it
- 3:11to you at a big discount in fact there is that there's a there's a farmer's
- 3:14market that delivers to people it's called like imperfect produce or ugly produce
- 3:19there's a lot of different versions of it and basically all of their leftover
- 3:22stuff that people didn't pick up at the farmer's market,
- 3:25they just give at a big discount and you can get those CSA,
- 3:31it's called CSA boxes, for pretty cheap.
- 3:34But yeah, so I think, try to think of ways that you can buy bulk.
- 3:39If you go to a traditional Ralph's, Albertson's, Fred Meyer,
- 3:43or if you go to Trader Joe's, or Sprouts, or Whole Foods, these are expensive grocery stores.
- 3:50And they have a lot of waste, because they have to make their food be very presentable.
- 3:55And to make it presentable, they have to throw out a lot of stuff that goes bad.
- 3:59And it's not like they can sell it somewhere else
- 4:02at a discount because that's the whole point they're
- 4:05charging the extra money for their
- 4:07produce to look good if they sold it at a discount they
- 4:10would lose that profit so now whole
- 4:14waste thing aside let's forget the whole waste thing it's just good to shop
- 4:19at a place where you get the best deals the best deals are usually at the bulk
- 4:22grocery stores these are usually grocery stores that sell things in big bulk
- 4:26often to restaurants often to commercial businesses.
- 4:31So think of Costco Business, Winco, and there is U.S.
- 4:37Foods, and there's a bunch of other places like that where you can get your
- 4:40foods and all of your groceries and your meats and your spices.
- 4:44You can get this giant box of Italian herb mix. That's amazing.
- 4:50That's a great deal. You can get a huge box of, what is it, garlic sprinkles, you know.
- 4:57Um yes that's the best deal you're ever going to get for 15 the little containers
- 5:01you buy for five or seven dollars imagine you're getting probably about 15 times
- 5:08as many of those containers for,
- 5:11twice the price it's a great deal anyway so yeah try to think outside the box
- 5:16when you go shopping and at least keep some of your stuff in um in from get
- 5:21some of your stuff from these larger bulk stores.
- 5:24If you get onions and potatoes, if you keep them in a very dark place,
- 5:28in a basement, somewhere in your garage, that's going to save you a lot of money
- 5:33because that doesn't go bad. It stores very well.
- 5:36Root vegetables generally store
- 5:38very well. A lot of fruits can also store really well in colder places.
- 5:43And if you get it fresh and you know how to can and how to put things in the
- 5:47freezer and store it really well, that's another great place to pull things out and make your food.
- 5:52So anyway, that's a little bit about grocery shopping, maybe the way I do things.
- 5:57And I would love to hear what you do. How do you save on groceries?
- 6:01How do you make sure you get good groceries?
- 6:03In another podcast episode, I'll talk about organics versus traditional produce.
- 6:09I guess for me, it's not as important as other items, but I would love to hear your story.
