- 0:26Hello and welcome to Kentucky smiles on talking facts.
- 0:29This is your host,
- 0:30Dr jennifer Hunter,
- 0:31assistant director for family consumer sciences extension at the University of Kentucky.
- 0:36Today I'm pleased to be joined by dr yo an oral surgeon with the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
- 0:43Welcome dr Yo thank you.
- 0:46Today's topic is really going to focus on oral cancer and what as an individual we need to know about oral cancer.
- 0:56I just want to kind of start with a really simple question of what exactly is oral cancer?
- 1:03So oral cancer is also known as mouth cancer.
- 1:06So it forms in your oral cavity or your mouth.
- 1:09So where it happens is it includes all parts of your mouth that you can see when you open wide and look in the mirror.
- 1:16That means that your lips,
- 1:17your gums,
- 1:18tongue,
- 1:18cheeks,
- 1:19roof or floor of the mouth.
- 1:21So what happens is oral cancer forms when the cells of the layer these the mucosa or the skin in that area changes and it becomes something bad as a person.
- 1:32What are some potential signs that I could look out for of oral cancer or when should I talk to my health care provider.
- 1:40So the oral cancer can come in many different ways.
- 1:44So you know,
- 1:45mouth sores or ulcers that don't heal red,
- 1:48a white patch inside the uh inside your mouth?
- 1:52Sometimes loose teeth,
- 1:53your pain,
- 1:55difficulty or pain while swallowing,
- 1:57opening your mouth for chewing.
- 1:59So look for signs like these.
- 2:01Are there certain activities or risk factors that can increase an individual's risk of developing oral cancer?
- 2:09So smoking is the number one risk factor.
- 2:12So you know,
- 2:13your risk of oral cancer goes up significantly.
- 2:16The more you smoke excessive alcohol usage to can also increase your risk of oral cancer.
- 2:22And of course anyone that drinks excessively and smokes at the same time can also at high risk for oral cancer.
- 2:29So I'm gonna ask what about like the smokeless tobacco products or things that are held in your mouth.
- 2:36That too,
- 2:37that can definitely be a big risk factor of oral cancer.
- 2:40Like the snuff of the dip that you put in your mouth.
- 2:42Is oral cancer something when I go to the dentist every six months for a cleaning.
- 2:49Is that something that my dentist is automatically looking for?
- 2:52Yes.
- 2:53So you know when you go see your dentist,
- 2:55they should be performing what we call a head and neck exam.
- 2:57So they'll kind of check for any lumps and bumps on your neck and then they will be looking all throughout your mouth to make sure that you don't have any things that deviate from normal.
- 3:06Is that what you would consider to be an oral cancer screening or is an oral cancer screening more in depth.
- 3:12Now that is the oral cancer screening,
- 3:14it is pretty simple and straightforward,
- 3:17how can the HPV vaccine help prevent some types of oral cancer?
- 3:23So the HPV vaccine is a very good vaccine to have,
- 3:28as it prevents you actually doesn't really stop you from getting oral cancer.
- 3:33It stops you from getting cancer actually in the back of your mouth.
- 3:36So it's a little past the oral cavity.
- 3:38That means in the base of your tongue,
- 3:40your tonsils and in the oral pharynx.
- 3:43And the HPV itself is one of the biggest risk factors for cancer back.
- 3:46So that's one of the things we push for people to get is to get the HPV vaccine to prevent cancers back there.
- 3:53So if someone has a concern,
- 3:56if they have maybe a sore in their mouth or spot in their mouth or they find a lump,
- 4:00what should their next step be,
- 4:02make an appointment to see your dentist or actually um your primary physician and they can go ahead and do an exam for it and they feel that that's something abnormal.
- 4:12They may probably refer you to an oral surgeon or otolaryngologist to have that area biopsy.
- 4:18Excellent doctor,
