- 0:08In our busy world, family time is frequently neglected.
- 0:13It is vital that we give attention to our families while we
- 0:16can, and it is especially important to give attention to
- 0:20what God says in his word about our homes.
- 0:24For the next few moments, let's join Scott Pauley as we open the scriptures and
- 0:28and find God's message for your family.
- 0:40Hello friends, this is Scott Pauley, and I want to welcome you to Enjoying the
- 0:44Journey. Today I have my best friend with me for this particular
- 0:47episode. These are unique programs because we're having conversations,
- 0:52family talk, and today Tammy is joining
- 0:56me for a little discussion about the transitions of life,
- 0:59and I'm so thrilled she's with me. Tammy's my best friend.
- 1:03We met in college. We have been married
- 1:07almost a quarter of a century now, married on Friday the 13th. That was a
- 1:10lucky one for me. And we have 3 children that all look like their mother,
- 1:13praise God. But Tammy's been a faithful wife and mother and a real
- 1:17encouragement in the work God has given us to do. I want to
- 1:20begin with a scripture before we start our conversation. It comes from one
- 1:24of my favorite chapters in the Bible, Philippians chapter 3. The Apostle
- 1:28Paul said in verse 13, brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended.
- 1:32In other words, he hadn't arrived. We haven't arrived.
- 1:35But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind
- 1:39and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press
- 1:43toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ
- 1:48Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded. And if in
- 1:51anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto
- 1:56you. In other words, it's a process. On the
- 1:59journey, there are intersections and crossroads where you make conscious decisions
- 2:04which way you're going to go. There are also twists and turns that you didn't
- 2:07see coming, the transitions of life. Uh, Tammy,
- 2:11we've had a number of those. I'm sure we'll have more. But what would
- 2:15you say are 2 or 3 of the big transitions we've lived through?
- 2:19Well, the first one and probably the biggest one was when we got married.
- 2:22Wait a minute, you mean you had to adjust to me? Is that what you're
- 2:25saying? Yes. And, um, then our children, when we had our children and
- 2:30when they started going to school, then the last one when they were
- 2:33all in school. And of course now we're on the other side of it.
- 2:36Our first one is going to get married in January,
- 2:40so that's a big transition. Which means soon you're going to have a transition back
- 2:43to just having me. That's what it means. But that's true. When you transition
- 2:48from being single to being married, that's an adjustment. You start
- 2:52having kids. I used to tell people, one child changes your life, 3 turns your
- 2:56world upside down. But there are transitions in that.
- 2:59And all along the stages of child rearing,
- 3:03there are huge changes, and we are facing a
- 3:07new one ourselves at this juncture. But I think one of the biggest ones you
- 3:10and I have journeyed through together was nearly 6 years ago when God
- 3:14led us to leave where we were to step out by faith into full-time
- 3:19evangelistic work. That was a big transition, wasn't it? Absolutely.
- 3:22It was very big. And not just for me, for my family.
- 3:27I think one of the things I learned leading
- 3:31our family through that transition was that we get
- 3:35further along than the rest of the family.
- 3:39I mean by that, everybody doesn't hit the transition emotionally at
- 3:42the same time. That's right. That was instructive for me,
- 3:47and you have to give people time to work through things. Time makes a difference,
- 3:50doesn't it? It sure does. What would you say is one of the lessons that
- 3:54God really taught you during that transition season?
- 3:58Well, the first one I can think of is that God is faithful.
- 4:01No matter where you are and where he takes you in life,
- 4:04he's always faithful. Amen.
- 4:07He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. That's very
- 4:11true. What else would you say the Lord really instructed
- 4:15you in during that time? Well, of course, to be obedient to
- 4:19the Lord, what he's teaching you, what he wants you to do, and that
- 4:23it might not always be easy, or it might be easy, that you just
- 4:27be obedient to him. Yes, that's a great point. There are all kinds of transitions,
- 4:31but if you want to boil it down and make it really simple, it's this:
- 4:34what does God want? And if you find God's will,
- 4:39um, how did that affect your thinking in relationship even to our children?
- 4:44Well, the biggest thing is that if it's God's
- 4:47will for our life, then it was God's will for their lives. That's good.
- 4:51Yeah, I remember at a certain juncture in our decision-making
- 4:55process arguing with the Holy Spirit, um,
- 4:59about how this was going to affect our kids. Yes. And I still remember
- 5:03the Lord really, really speaking to me about the fact, if it's God's will for
- 5:07me and you, then it's God's will for them.
- 5:10That helped me. That helped my faith. Of course,
- 5:14now we have the beauty of hindsight, don't we? That's right.
- 5:18That's right. You know, our— your children they
- 5:22don't always understand what God's teaching you,
- 5:25where, where he's leading you, and they can't see it. They can't see—
- 5:29they can only see what they know, and so they can't see what's on the
- 5:32other end, that it might be better, you know.
- 5:36And so they just, they have to work for that. They have to trust God
- 5:39for themselves. And the definitely in this transition is that God grew
- 5:43their faith, that when there were very, very hard moments
- 5:47I think especially with one of our children,
- 5:51um, to see that first, that struggle
- 5:54in her life and her doubting even
- 5:58the Lord, who he, who he is, and then just see
- 6:02her come out on the other side. It was like the light bulb switched on
- 6:05and God came so real to her. So that, that was just so
- 6:09rewarding to see. Yeah. God makes everything beautiful in his time.
- 6:12That's right. That verse is found in the same passage in Ecclesiastes
- 6:17that talks about to everything there is a season. And that's really what we're
- 6:20talking about today, the seasons of life, the, the ebb and flow. And I
- 6:24don't know who's listening today, you know, not everybody goes through the kind of transition
- 6:27we went through, but I do think the principles
- 6:31learned in these transition seasons would help everyone.
- 6:35Um, I know for me, when we went through that decision-making
- 6:38process, the move all the life change,
- 6:42the 2 things interestingly enough that came alive to me was the Bible
- 6:46and prayer. Yes. And isn't that interesting? It's always the basics,
- 6:50isn't it? Always back to that relationship with the Lord.
- 6:53So the Bible came alive to me. God started showing me things. How would you
- 6:57say God spoke to you during that season?
- 7:00Well, especially after we moved, that was the hardest time for
- 7:04me. Were times I felt like my spirit
- 7:08was grieving, and of course I really felt like the devil was working extra time.
- 7:12And there were just, uh, I think a big thing was
- 7:16that when I would listen to the word of God in church
- 7:19through preachers, the— that would come so alive to me
- 7:23that sometimes when I didn't even know exactly what to pray,
- 7:26uh, the Lord, he would still show himself so real. So good,
- 7:30isn't it? Yeah, and, and, and the Bible does come
- 7:34alive, especially at the dark seasons. It's a, it's a lamp to our
- 7:38feet, a light to our path, and God always confirms his will with
- 7:42his word. The other, the other thing for me was prayer,
- 7:45and I specifically remember you and I setting aside days. I think
- 7:49it was one day a week for several months we fasted and
- 7:53prayed, and that was a very personal thing to us.
- 7:58Those days affected me. Did they you? Oh, absolutely. And I, I had
- 8:02never fasted before, really. There might have been a couple of times in life before,
- 8:08um, but I, I saw the importance of what fasting
- 8:11does. And it strengthened our relationship. We got closer to
- 8:15the Lord, and as we did that, we got closer to each other when we
- 8:18did it together. Yeah. And if you're facing some major decision or dilemma
- 8:23seeking direction, I would encourage you set aside
- 8:26some time to fast and pray and,
- 8:29and bring your family along in that and teach your kids to pray.
- 8:33I was thinking about this the other day, just our kids seeing answers to
- 8:37prayer. That's great for us to see answers to prayer, but when your kids
- 8:40start seeing answers to prayer, it grows their faith. And we saw
- 8:44that through, through this process. Again, none of us have arrived.
- 8:48We're all just pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling.
- 8:53Tammy, if you could give one word of encouragement, you could say
- 8:56one thing to the people who are listening at whatever season they are in
- 9:00life, whatever transition they're facing, what would that word of encouragement
- 9:03be? To trust him, to know he's in control
- 9:07and he will work through all of it. Just trust him.
- 9:11It really is a faith life. We walk
- 9:15by faith and not by sight. And I'm sure because we've
- 9:19lived this, Right now, some of you can't see how you're going to get through
- 9:22something, how it's going to be good, how the Lord's going
- 9:25to turn it, um, what the next step is to be even.
- 9:29But I'm telling you, if you will live by faith,
- 9:33uh, it will be for God's glory and your good.
- 9:36And we've seen that, haven't we? Yes, we have. We give God the praise
- 9:39and glory for it. We appreciate so much folks praying for our family,
- 9:43and we want you to know we're praying for your family today. That God will
- 9:47guide you and lead you in a plain path as
- 9:51you work through the transitions of life. God bless you, friends.
