- 0:00Good morning, y'all. It's friendly.
- 0:02Welcome back to In the Stillness.
- 0:04Thanks for joining me on today's podcast episode.
- 0:07Today we're going to be continuing in First John chapter
- 0:111. And this is such a needed
- 0:13reminder, I believe, especially if you have ever wrestled with
- 0:18guilt, shame, or even feeling distant from God.
- 0:23I really was thinking about during my quiet time, how easy
- 0:27it is to either minimize sin or on the opposite end, to feel so
- 0:33crushed by it and defeated. And so this passage that we're
- 0:38going to be in, it brings us back to truth both about our
- 0:42condition and ultimately about God's heart.
- 0:46So we're going to be reading from chapter 1, verses 8 through
- 0:5010. If we boast that we have no sin,
- 0:55we're only fooling ourselves and our strangers to the truth.
- 0:59But if we freely admit our sins when His light uncovers them, He
- 1:05will be faithful to forgive us every time.
- 1:09God is just to forgive us our sins because of Christ, and He
- 1:14will continue to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 1:18If we claim that we're not guilty of sin when God uncovers
- 1:22it with His light, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
- 1:29So once again, John is super direct in the way that he
- 1:33writes. There's a few big things that
- 1:36stood out to me here that I'm going to go through.
- 1:39First of all, we are all capable of sinning.
- 1:44John says that clearly, if we say we have no sin, we're
- 1:49deceiving ourselves. And something I jotted down was
- 1:53talking about how in the commentary that I was reading,
- 1:57the false teachers at the time basically believed that people
- 2:01did not have a natural inclination or tendency to sin.
- 2:06So they were teaching this and therefore did not take sin
- 2:10seriously. They were kind of brushing it
- 2:12under the rug and honestly, in a different format.
- 2:17I think that we can still do that today.
- 2:20It may be not as loud, but it can be in how we live.
- 2:25Because this can be seen in minimizing sin, maybe justifying
- 2:31them or avoiding calling things what it actually is.
- 2:37And truthfully, all humans are sinners by nature and by
- 2:42practice. However, this is when the gospel
- 2:46comes in. Because of Jesus Christ, because
- 2:51of his blood, we are no longer identified by our sin.
- 2:56Our sins are mistakes in the past, in the present, and in the
- 3:01future. They're completely forgiven.
- 3:04So yes, we are capable of sinning, but we're no longer
- 3:09bound to that sin and also we don't have to fall into it every
- 3:14time. Scripture is so clear that there
- 3:17is always a way out. In 1st Corinthians 10 verse 13,
- 3:21it talks about that. So we are not in bondage to our
- 3:26sin anymore and there is a choice.
- 3:29There is always a crossroads when you face that decision.
- 3:35The second thing is, confession is not about earning God's
- 3:39acceptance. This part really stood out to
- 3:42me. Confession is meant to free us,
- 3:46not to trap us in fear. I think some people can confess
- 3:54the same sins over and over because of that feeling of guilt
- 3:59or fear that they're missing something and that if they don't
- 4:03confess it perfectly that that makes them risk losing their
- 4:08salvation. But it is so important to
- 4:11realize that is not the heart of God because our relationship
- 4:16with Jesus Christ is secure. We don't confess because we're
- 4:21afraid that God will reject us or remove our salvation.
- 4:26We confess so that we can enjoy closeness and intimacy with the
- 4:31Father. Again.
- 4:32I wrote this in my notes. Confession removes the barrier
- 4:36like a guilty conscience that gets in the way of intimacy with
- 4:41God. Because really, think about it.
- 4:45It's hard to be close with someone if you always feel like
- 4:49you're walking on egg shells or you're having to hide things
- 4:53because you don't know how they're going to react.
- 4:55The truth is, God already knows your sin.
- 4:59He already knows your weaknesses and your struggles.
- 5:03So your confession to Him is not informing Him.
- 5:08It's actually agreeing with him. And that leads into the third
- 5:13thing that I want to talk about. True confession includes
- 5:17repentance. It's not just saying, OK, yeah,
- 5:21God, I'm sorry I messed up. But it's shifting to a heart
- 5:26posture of I don't want to stay in this.
- 5:30I don't want to keep living this way.
- 5:32Think about it like this. If you were genuinely
- 5:35confessing, you would not plan to keep doing the same thing and
- 5:43just seek temporary forgiveness. That checked me a little in a
- 5:48good way, because real confession is saying God.
- 5:52I see this the way that you see it.
- 5:55It is sin and it is separating me from you and I genuinely need
- 6:00your help to turn from it. It's not in our own strength,
- 6:04but it's relying on His power to overcome it.
- 6:08The next time that we face it, the next time we face that
- 6:11obstacle. Another thing that I loved
- 6:16reflecting on was we are not to run from God.
- 6:19We are called to run to Him. I think so often when we sin,
- 6:26our instinct or our first response is to pull away.
- 6:30We feel the shame, we feel distance and we hide.
- 6:34Think about it in the Garden of Eden.
- 6:37But James 4 verse 8 says come near to God and He will come
- 6:41near to you. So God is not pushing you away.
- 6:47He wants to forgive you. He wants to restore you.
- 6:52That's why it says He is always faithful and just to forgive.
- 6:56He is so willing, you guys. He's so willing to restore our
- 7:01first love, passion for him because He wants that closeness
- 7:05with you too. And to round it out, I want to
- 7:11talk about how confession brings us back into alignment with the
- 7:15truth. Because when we admit our sin
- 7:18and confess, we are agreeing that sin is actually sin.
- 7:25We're choosing to not hide it, and we're also recognizing our
- 7:30desperate need for the Lord's power.
- 7:33It keeps our hearts tender and soft because we can only confess
- 7:38what we're truly aware of. But when God does reveal
- 7:43something, we're faced with a choice and decision.
- 7:47We can either ignore it, we can brush it off, or we can come
- 7:52into agreement with Him. It admit our mistakes and when
- 7:57we do that, it leads to restoration.
- 8:00It cleanses us, it purifies our conscience and our heart before
- 8:04him. So with all of that, let's go
- 8:07ahead and move into prayer. Dear God, thank You that You are
- 8:14so faithful and just to forgive us of our sins every single
- 8:21time. Thank You that we don't have to
- 8:25continue living in guilt or shame or fear.
- 8:31There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
- 8:36We get to live in freedom and closeness with You.
- 8:41Would You help us to just be honest about our sin, but also
- 8:47learn how to be confident in Your grace?
- 8:50May we have hearts that run to You quickly, not away from You.
- 8:57Would you aid us, God, to reject what is pulling us away from You
- 9:03when we are faced at a crossroads between choosing Your
- 9:08way and our flesh's desires? I pray that we would be governed
- 9:12by the Spirit, that we would be led by You, and that You would
- 9:16empower us to choose what is pleasing and honorable to you.
- 9:20God, may we walk in the truth of who you've called us to be and
- 9:26live lives worthy of the calling that you have placed on our
- 9:29lives. We praise you, we thank you, we
- 9:34surrender our hearts to you today.
- 9:36God, in Jesus name, Amen. OK guys, well that's today's
- 9:41episode. I hope that y'all can take some
- 9:44things away, really learn as I did in my quiet time, and sit
- 9:49with the word of truth and ask God to continue speaking to your
- 9:54heart. I will see y'all on the next
- 9:56episode.
