- 0:00Most religious and spiritual paths have addressed the issue
- 0:04of sexuality from a viewpoint that turns it into some kind of
- 0:08sin or morality. Concern and proscriptions about
- 0:13sex and responses to the sexual impulse mirror this focus on
- 0:18morality versus immorality. People who engage in sexual
- 0:22behaviour outside the accepted norm in a particular society are
- 0:28stigmatized by those activities. The determination of what
- 0:33constitutes moral or immoral is clearly based on the view of
- 0:38specific societies and thus can be seen as a temporal
- 0:42determination, not some kind of universal law or judgment.
- 0:47Obviously, forcing oneself sexually on another person
- 0:51without mutuality, or using sex as a way to control, bully, or
- 0:56dominate another person shifts the general conversation
- 1:00somewhat where it breaches moral, legal, and interpersonal
- 1:05human constraints. Regardless of how a particular
- 1:09society views sex and sexual practices, the spiritual seeker
- 1:14needs to strip away the opinions, the prejudices, the
- 1:18prejudgments and the accepted morality to understand how the
- 1:23sexual power functions, what role it plays, and how it needs
- 1:27to be addressed in the context of the evolution of
- 1:31consciousness and the transformation of human
- 1:34existence. In order to accomplish this,
- 1:38Srioro Bindo has taken an entirely different view of sex
- 1:42and the sexual impulses. He places it in the context of
- 1:46the evolution of consciousness and the focus and use of the
- 1:50energy in relation to the required focus and force needed
- 1:55to accomplish the yogic objectives.
- 1:57As well as by looking at it in the context of the high
- 2:01probability of distraction by the arising of the sexual
- 2:05impulse or by misuse of the higher powers when they open the
- 2:10lower vital chakras and instead of acting to transform the
- 2:15energy, simply enhance the action of the original vital
- 2:18powers through increase of energy.
- 2:23There are numerous examples of this misuse of spiritual force
- 2:27to gain sexual power. The idea that it can somehow be
- 2:31managed is for most people an illusion perpetrated by the
- 2:36vital nature, eager to continue its old ways with new forms of
- 2:41energetic support. This can lead to serious
- 2:45imbalances and failure in the spiritual pursuit for the
- 2:48individual seeker and can cause extreme disruption to the
- 2:52environment within a spiritual community.
- 2:56Sri Ro Bindu observes Quote I have stated very briefly in my
- 3:01previous letter my position with regard to the sex impulse and
- 3:05yoga. I may add here that my
- 3:07conclusion is not founded on any mental opinion or preconceived
- 3:12moral idea, but on probative facts and on observation and
- 3:17experience. I do not deny that so long as
- 3:22one allows a sort of separation between inner experience and
- 3:26outer consciousness, the latter being left as an inferior
- 3:30activity, controlled but not transformed, it is quite
- 3:34possible to have spiritual experiences and make progress
- 3:38without any entire cessation of the sex activity.
- 3:43The mind separates itself from the outer vital life parts and
- 3:47the physical consciousness and lives its own inner life.
- 3:52But only a few can really do this with any completeness.
- 3:56And the moment one's experiences extend to the life plain and the
- 4:00physical sex can no longer be treated in this way, it can
- 4:05become at any moment a disturbing, upsetting and
- 4:09deforming force. I have observed that to an equal
- 4:13extent with ego, pride, vanity, ambition and rajasic greeds and
- 4:19desires, it is one of the main causes of spiritual casualties
- 4:24that have taken place in Sadhna. The attempt to treat it by
- 4:28detachment without complete excision breaks down.
- 4:32The attempt to sublimate it favoured by many modern Mystics
- 4:36in Europe is a most rash and perilous experiment, for it is
- 4:41when one mixes up sex and spirituality that there is the
- 4:44greatest havoc. Even the attempt to sublimate it
- 4:48by turning it towards the Divine, as in the Vaishnava
- 4:51Mathura Bhava, carries in it a serious danger, as the results
- 4:57of a wrong turn or use in this method so often show.
- 5:02At any rate, in this Yoga, which seeks not only the essential
- 5:06experience of the Divine, but a transformation of the whole
- 5:11being in nature, I have found it an absolute necessity of the
- 5:16Sadhana to aim at a complete mastery over the sex force.
- 5:21Otherwise the vital consciousness remains a turbid
- 5:24mixture. The turbidity affecting the
- 5:27purity of the spiritual must mind and seriously hindering the
- 5:31upward turn of the forces of the body.
- 5:35This Yoga demands a full ascension of the whole lower or
- 5:38ordinary consciousness to join the spiritual above it, and a
- 5:43full descent of the spiritual, eventually of the superimental,
- 5:48into the mind, life and body to transform it.
- 5:53The total ascent is impossible so long as sex desire blocks the
- 5:58way. The descent is dangerous so long
- 6:02as sex desire is powerful in the vital, for at any moment an
- 6:07unexcised or latent sex desire may be the cause of a mixture
- 6:11which throws back the true descent and uses the energy
- 6:15acquired for other purposes, or turns all the action of the
- 6:20consciousness towards wrong experience, turbid and delusive.
- 6:25One must therefore clear this obstacle out of the way,
- 6:29otherwise there is either no safety or no free movement
- 6:34towards finality in the Sadhna. End Quote Reference Sri
