Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: I am Delacoma Rio and I'm the frontman for the
- 0:04Speaker 1: band Delacoma and I'm super excited to be releasing brand
- 0:09Speaker 1: new single more Than Survival through Heavy Magazine.
- 0:14Speaker 2: And Sational Dell hell things, brother, thanks for joining us.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Thank you so much for having me on.
- 0:19Speaker 4: Chris, I absolutely plays are the last time you spoke
- 0:21Speaker 4: like this, we were rocking out on a boat. It
- 0:23Speaker 4: was a whole different environment, completely wonted it.
- 0:26Speaker 3: It was a completely different environment.
- 0:29Speaker 1: And it's so wild because I used to do a
- 0:33Speaker 1: lot of the cruise ships like pre COVID, and that
- 0:37Speaker 1: was the first time that we've been back back on
- 0:39Speaker 1: on the boats and it was so wild, like running
- 0:43Speaker 1: into you as well, because like ran into you and
- 0:45Speaker 1: then so many other people that I knew, and then
- 0:48Speaker 1: having that converge with the cruising world was pretty pretty weird.
- 0:52Speaker 3: But cool at the same time.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Few day you look like you're having a ball, though,
- 0:55Speaker 4: made like one minute you'd be there and then you'd
- 0:58Speaker 4: be over there and we've thinking.
- 1:01Speaker 2: You were socializing, but you're having a ball.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely So.
- 1:06Speaker 4: As you mentioned before, brother, Della Coma released your new
- 1:09Speaker 4: single war Than Survive. We're actually not releasing it so
- 1:12Speaker 4: last week we released a song. This week we're releasing
- 1:15Speaker 4: the music video.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Is that correct?
- 1:17Speaker 3: That is absolutely correct?
- 1:19Speaker 1: Ye?
- 1:19Speaker 2: So run it running through the process of why you
- 1:21Speaker 2: do something like that.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Well, we decided we get the single out first.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It's the first single from a new album, so people
- 1:30Speaker 1: can actually listen to the single, and then we'll drop
- 1:34Speaker 1: the music video a week later so people can actually
- 1:37Speaker 1: see the I guess the visual side of that.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, well, can you give it a bit of a
- 1:42Speaker 2: sneak preview? What do we expect from the video? Like,
- 1:44Speaker 2: we've been waiting waiting a week and half of it, mate,
- 1:46Speaker 2: So it's gonna have to be special.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Absolutely, yes.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So we we've actually filmed it at the abandoned butter
- 1:55Speaker 1: factory in Your Monday So it's owned by the guy
- 1:59Speaker 1: that owns Your Monday Market, so we had to get
- 2:02Speaker 1: special permission to go in there. It's one hundred year
- 2:04Speaker 1: old building, so we've gone in there and we've filmed
- 2:09Speaker 1: in there. It was a fairly early shoot and it
- 2:13Speaker 1: was I directed this music video. It was the largest
- 2:18Speaker 1: film crew that I've actually ever been in charge of,
- 2:23Speaker 1: So it was a little bit scary kind of going
- 2:25Speaker 1: into it because I had a lot of deadlines.
- 2:27Speaker 3: You know this person on this site.
- 2:29Speaker 1: We had a guitarist flying in from Melbourne and he
- 2:32Speaker 1: couldn't get there until noon, so I had to send
- 2:35Speaker 1: somebody out to get him from.
- 2:36Speaker 3: The airport and then line up all the shots and everything.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But I'm super excited with how it came out.
- 2:42Speaker 3: And yeah, the song itself is I wrote this song.
- 2:52Speaker 1: At the same time that I wrote the last song
- 2:54Speaker 1: of the last album, so even though they're very different
- 2:58Speaker 1: songs that were written within a day of each other,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and we thought about putting this on the last record
- 3:04Speaker 1: and decided it didn't quite fit. So I felt like
- 3:07Speaker 1: it's a good entry into this new record.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Well along those lines, bro tell us a bit more
- 3:13Speaker 4: about more than survival from a musical point of view.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Then what you're unfolded the song.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So this song, it's a fairly heavy song. It's I
- 3:24Speaker 1: guess it's probably it's quite sludgy. I guess, in a way,
- 3:31Speaker 1: quite grungy. It's a song that I wrote it during
- 3:37Speaker 1: lockdowns in Melbourne, and observationally i'd been through the years
- 3:44Speaker 1: prior to COVID had been quite difficult for me personally,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and then we kind of hit like twenty twenty. In
- 3:52Speaker 1: my head leading into twenty twenty, I thought was going
- 3:55Speaker 1: to be where I'd start kind of going up and
- 4:00Speaker 1: so to kind of like land in a lockdown felt
- 4:05Speaker 1: it was quite depressing for a lot of people, obviously,
- 4:09Speaker 1: But the song itself is about kind of sitting there
- 4:14Speaker 1: with feeling like you've been just keeping your nose above
- 4:18Speaker 1: water for a while, and when you do that, you
- 4:22Speaker 1: kind of get stuck in that routine of just getting
- 4:24Speaker 1: by and having the opportunity to kind of think, you
- 4:30Speaker 1: know what, I want to do more. You go, I
- 4:33Speaker 1: want to do more than just survive. I want I
- 4:37Speaker 1: want to thrive. You know, So that this this song
- 4:41Speaker 1: is yeah, I think you'll you'll see that through the
- 4:46Speaker 1: music video, probably even more so than than than the
- 4:51Speaker 1: music itself.
- 4:52Speaker 3: You'll you'll you'll hear it in the music and then you'll.
- 4:54Speaker 1: See it with the music video, just that the concept
- 4:57Speaker 1: of is, yeah, I I believe we're.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Here for more than just survival.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of those lines probably like the song.
- 5:07Speaker 4: It's one of those songs that's got a really familiar
- 5:09Speaker 4: feel to it, but it's still raw and fresh as fuck.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So how difficult is.
- 5:15Speaker 4: It to sort of bringing that sense of life. I
- 5:17Speaker 4: guess to a style of music that has been around
- 5:19Speaker 4: for a while and people sort of grew up with.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Interesting question.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Actually, I think I when I first went solo almost
- 5:31Speaker 1: ten years ago now, my vision, I guess, if you will,
- 5:37Speaker 1: was that I love this style of music. But I'm
- 5:41Speaker 1: also very aware that, you know, you can't reinvent the wheel.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You know, it's you know, it's it's kind of all
- 5:48Speaker 1: been done in a way before.
- 5:49Speaker 3: But we're speaking off air about how what you have as.
- 5:55Speaker 1: An artist is your perspective and no one can take
- 5:59Speaker 1: that away from you. No one can see the world
- 6:01Speaker 1: the way that you do. No one can see through
- 6:04Speaker 1: your eyes. You're the only one that can do that.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So my I guess, I try to say things in
- 6:14Speaker 1: the way that I think makes sense, and I write
- 6:19Speaker 1: music that I.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Want to listen to, and.
- 6:25Speaker 1: If it's if it appeals, if it appeals to people,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and it sounds, you know, like it's a style that's
- 6:32Speaker 1: been done before, that's cool.
- 6:35Speaker 3: But at the same time, we're.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Living in twenty twenty four dealing with things that people
- 6:41Speaker 1: have been dealing with for centuries.
- 6:43Speaker 3: You know, everybody deals with the same problems.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Everybody deals with the same joys, just at a different
- 6:49Speaker 1: point in history. So I guess, to sum it up,
- 6:53Speaker 1: how do you bring your life to it?
- 6:55Speaker 3: I guess you just live now.
- 7:00Speaker 4: One for you, But I don't think I've ever asked
- 7:01Speaker 4: this one before. But like, as an artist, when are
- 7:03Speaker 4: you writing a song? Like do you ever sort of
- 7:06Speaker 4: stop and listen back to it and sort of go
- 7:08Speaker 4: I don't think people are like that and you change it?
- 7:11Speaker 4: Or do you just sort of stick with your convictions
- 7:13Speaker 4: and if you like it, everyone else should come along
- 7:15Speaker 4: to the right g.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That is a really good question. I only do music
- 7:23Speaker 1: that I like, So I if I couldn't put out
- 7:30Speaker 1: a song that I couldn't see myself playing still in
- 7:36Speaker 1: thirty years, you know, because I don't think that's fair
- 7:40Speaker 1: on myself, and it's also not fair on my audience.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I don't believe if I don't.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I don't think there's a magic formula for this song
- 7:50Speaker 1: is definitely going to be a hit song.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I think there's a difference between.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I think you know as a songwriter when something is
- 7:56Speaker 1: a good song, when something is well written, you know that,
- 8:01Speaker 1: but you don't know.
- 8:04Speaker 3: How it's going to be received.
- 8:08Speaker 1: From a global standpoint, because there's plenty of songs that
- 8:12Speaker 1: I absolutely adore that are not really global hits, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 1: but they've connected with me and they've connected with other people.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I couldn't put my finger on why they haven't become
- 8:24Speaker 1: a global hit. You know.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Why?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Is Don't Stop Believing a bigger song by Journey than
- 8:29Speaker 1: Stone in Love.
- 8:32Speaker 3: By the same band.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I don't know, because personally I like Stone in Love
- 8:37Speaker 1: more than I like Don't Stop Believing. Don't Stop Believing
- 8:39Speaker 1: is a good song in my opinion, but I like
- 8:42Speaker 1: Stone in Love more. And I think when you were
- 8:47Speaker 1: writing a song, I think you have an opportunity to against.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Show how you see the world. And I'll give you
- 9:01Speaker 3: an example.
- 9:02Speaker 1: So the last song of the last record is a
- 9:06Speaker 1: song called Stay, which I wrote at the same time
- 9:08Speaker 1: as More Than Survival, and the chorus says, if you
- 9:14Speaker 1: want to stay, I will make some tea.
- 9:23Speaker 3: If you're going to stay, maybe I will maybe I
- 9:25Speaker 3: will too.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And when I first wrote it and I just put
- 9:30Speaker 1: it like, it just kind of came out, and I
- 9:32Speaker 1: wrote it down and I was like, that's kind of weird.
- 9:34Speaker 3: I'll make if you're going to stay, I'll make some tea.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And then I thought about it and I was like,
- 9:41Speaker 1: that's you know, it's kind of it's quite an adzy
- 9:44Speaker 1: thing to do. I guess if you're gonna, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 1: would you like a couppa? You know it's and I
- 9:50Speaker 1: showed it to my drum and he was like, oh, yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 1: I love the song. He goes, but that lie, did
- 9:55Speaker 1: you say you're going to make some tea? Like I said, yeah,
- 10:00Speaker 1: is I don't know about that line? Well, I was like,
- 10:05Speaker 1: appreciate your input that line. I think I'm going to
- 10:10Speaker 1: keep it because really I don't know. And it's.
- 10:18Speaker 3: The more the time goes on, the more I actually
- 10:21Speaker 3: am really glad that I stuck to my convictions on there, because.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I kind of I kind of like song in a
- 10:28Speaker 1: way thematically that you know, actually sitting with your own
- 10:33Speaker 1: dark emotions and choosing which ones you want to keep
- 10:37Speaker 1: and which ones you want to say no, you can't
- 10:39Speaker 1: stay right, So I kind of like the tongue in
- 10:43Speaker 1: cheek element of do you want.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Me to put the kill on? Stick around for a while?
- 10:50Speaker 1: I mean, is this is this cup of tea or
- 10:52Speaker 1: is this just you know, hide by.
- 10:55Speaker 4: The fact that the drama actually remembered that line though,
- 10:58Speaker 4: so it's an impact, do you know, Like it stood
- 11:01Speaker 4: out to him and he remembered it, so it's done
- 11:03Speaker 4: his job.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And I will I will say, I mean, this is
- 11:05Speaker 1: no offense to any drummers out there, but I was
- 11:08Speaker 1: just very impressed.
- 11:09Speaker 3: That a drummer actually knew a lyric.
- 11:13Speaker 4: I remember, I didn't be still panther once, I didn't
- 11:15Speaker 4: beat sticks. And I said to him, I said, mane,
- 11:18Speaker 4: I reckon. Probably two percent of the people that I
- 11:20Speaker 4: chat to were drummers. I said, what do you think
- 11:21Speaker 4: that is? You said, because we're all fucking stupid. Mate,
- 11:27Speaker 4: sums it up.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I'm not going to go that far, but I will
- 11:32Speaker 3: say I remember being absolutely flabbergasted the drummer that I
- 11:37Speaker 3: had on the South of Everything record, my first touring
- 11:41Speaker 3: puring drummer in Della coma mad led Zeppelin fan, and
- 11:47Speaker 3: and he.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Uh, there was one time he wanted to do a
- 11:50Speaker 1: cover of one of their deep tracks and he said
- 11:52Speaker 1: the name of it and I didn't recognize the name,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, which one is that? And he,
- 11:59Speaker 1: kind of true drummer fashion, he's like, oh, it's one
- 12:02Speaker 1: that goes, you know whatever, you know, and then I
- 12:05Speaker 1: was like, oh, I think I know that one. Is
- 12:07Speaker 1: that the one where the chorus goes and I sang
- 12:09Speaker 1: the chorus and he goes, I don't know.
- 12:13Speaker 3: I was like, how can you not know? And he's like, oh,
- 12:16Speaker 3: you know. It's got the drum, Like how did you
- 12:19Speaker 3: not know the lyrics? I'm like, come on.
- 12:23Speaker 4: It blames the wide completely different to the rest of
- 12:25Speaker 4: the world. That's all you can say. So more than
- 12:30Speaker 4: Survival is the first single taken from your third album,
- 12:33Speaker 4: which will be released next year.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Bro, So what else can you tell us about the album?
- 12:38Speaker 1: Well, the album is I'm not going to reveal the
- 12:41Speaker 1: title just yet. It's going to be for future interviews,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but it's.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Going to be a progression from the last record. It's
- 12:49Speaker 3: going to be.
- 12:50Speaker 1: This will be the first time that I've actually got
- 12:52Speaker 1: a five piece, so that's exciting for me. I've always
- 12:57Speaker 1: wanted to have two guitars, and I've got the added
- 13:01Speaker 1: blessing of adding my little brother to the lineup. And
- 13:05Speaker 1: he is a multi instrumentalist, so he plays keys and guitar,
- 13:09Speaker 1: so I can actually have that versatility when I'm playing
- 13:14Speaker 1: live about either having one guitar and keys or having
- 13:18Speaker 1: two guitars, So I think we're going to take the
- 13:22Speaker 1: last record. I feel like I took more risks than
- 13:25Speaker 1: the first one, and I'm definitely going to continue that
- 13:29Speaker 1: on this one takes some more risks. I think there's
- 13:35Speaker 1: going to be some heavier stuff on here, but there's
- 13:38Speaker 1: probably also going to be some lighter stuff, So probably
- 13:40Speaker 1: a bit more scope on this record.
- 13:42Speaker 4: So why more than Survival as the lead single? It
- 13:46Speaker 4: bro because that song is pretty much representing your next
- 13:49Speaker 4: body of work, So why did you choose that particular song.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think coming out of I mean, it's four years
- 13:58Speaker 1: in our rearview mirror, I guess, if you will. But
- 14:00Speaker 1: in many ways, the world is still kind of recovering
- 14:03Speaker 1: from the lockdowns and the shutdowns and all that kind
- 14:06Speaker 1: of stuff, and I think that there's a lot of
- 14:08Speaker 1: people out there that are doing it really tough, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: I think a lot.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Of people are still in that survival mode, if you will.
- 14:20Speaker 1: So for me, it's a I guess it's an opportunity
- 14:26Speaker 1: to acknowledge that it's okay to just be getting by
- 14:32Speaker 1: but also be hopeful for the future. And I think
- 14:36Speaker 1: that that probably encapsulates this next body of songs that
- 14:40Speaker 1: there's going to be some darkness in this this body
- 14:45Speaker 1: of work. I think where we've been as a nation
- 14:48Speaker 1: and as a as a society and as a as
- 14:52Speaker 1: a world, there's been a lot of darkness.
- 14:55Speaker 3: In the last four years.
- 14:56Speaker 1: In my own life, there's been there's been a lot
- 14:59Speaker 1: of struggle in the last four years, but there's also
- 15:02Speaker 1: a lot.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Of hope to come. And I think this song it
- 15:09Speaker 3: offers both. So I think it's a good It's a
- 15:13Speaker 3: good doorway, if you will.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Because this next record is going to have some dark
- 15:20Speaker 1: times and it's also going to have some hope and
- 15:22Speaker 1: they're going to be holding hands.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Just gave me warm, fuzzy feeling.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Then, Delacoma has been around for a while as a
- 15:32Speaker 4: band made but you only settled on the current lineup last.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Year with the addition of Rob Moody and John Justice.
- 15:38Speaker 4: So tell us about those two guys and what they
- 15:41Speaker 4: bring to Della Coma.
- 15:41Speaker 2: In your sound, they bring a lot.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So I I came back. I didn't do any live
- 15:50Speaker 1: Delacoma shows for basically three years, and when I was
- 15:57Speaker 1: putting back together a live lineup, that was when I
- 16:01Speaker 1: got Bailey on drums and Caleb on bass, and I
- 16:06Speaker 1: had a couple of guitarists go through and my brother
- 16:10Speaker 1: John Justice.
- 16:11Speaker 3: He has been a musician in.
- 16:15Speaker 1: His own right for several years at the time, so
- 16:20Speaker 1: I asked him if you'd like to join the lineup
- 16:22Speaker 1: for the US tour and Rob.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Rob plays with me in the Inaccess show in excess
- 16:29Speaker 3: tribute show that I.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Do, and so we've been doing that together for six
- 16:34Speaker 1: or seven years now, so we know each other really well.
- 16:38Speaker 1: And he'd never been to the US, so it was
- 16:42Speaker 1: kind of an opportunity for him to come over.
- 16:44Speaker 3: So it was really cool for me to be able
- 16:47Speaker 3: to bring I guess all of that together.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Was the first time I'd ever played music with my
- 16:51Speaker 1: little brother, and it was the first time that Rob
- 16:54Speaker 1: had ever been to the US. A bass player is
- 16:58Speaker 1: like he had his twenty four birthday in the US
- 17:01Speaker 1: on tour, his first time in the US, you know.
- 17:04Speaker 1: So in terms of what they bring, they all bring excitement,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I think in their own way, and they.
- 17:13Speaker 3: All bring I guess, exuberance. I can. I've been doing
- 17:24Speaker 3: it a while now, so sometimes I can get a
- 17:26Speaker 3: little bit jaded, and.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I feel very blessed to have people around me that
- 17:34Speaker 1: are excited about about this next chapter of Della Coma,
- 17:38Speaker 1: because sometimes it can feel like, oh man, I'm getting
- 17:43Speaker 1: back on the horse again because I've gone through a
- 17:45Speaker 1: few lineups and all that kind of stuff, you know.
- 17:47Speaker 3: So they they really do bring a lot of encouragement.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Now you mentioned the US too, Brolight. I was your
- 17:55Speaker 4: first trip back there for five years. Mate, So did
- 17:58Speaker 4: you find that your base that you had before was
- 18:01Speaker 4: still with you when you went back or were you
- 18:03Speaker 4: more or let's starting over again.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I've been both.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I think there was my uh, you never know where
- 18:11Speaker 1: you're gonna blow up, and I guess my heartland, if
- 18:15Speaker 1: you will, in the US has become Wisconsin and Vegas.
- 18:22Speaker 3: I didn't get to Vegas.
- 18:23Speaker 1: This last time, but I did get to Wisconsin, and
- 18:26Speaker 1: it was it was really humbling to see people that like, legitimately,
- 18:32Speaker 1: they they've missed me being on tour and I used
- 18:34Speaker 1: to go. I used to tour the US at least
- 18:37Speaker 1: once a year, and so there were people that literally
- 18:40Speaker 1: I think I did six or seven shows in Wisconsin.
- 18:43Speaker 1: And there were some people, you know, took a week
- 18:45Speaker 1: off work so they could hit you know, a bunch
- 18:48Speaker 1: in a row and all that kind of stuff, and
- 18:49Speaker 1: it was it was really humbling from the aspect of,
- 18:52Speaker 1: you know, you never know how you've connected with with
- 18:57Speaker 1: people with your music, you know, and until you actually
- 19:00Speaker 1: meet them, until you actually hear the stories. And and
- 19:04Speaker 1: I got the opportunity to do that a little bit,
- 19:08Speaker 1: having having taken some time away from touring, I guess
- 19:11Speaker 1: if you will. So that was that was that was
- 19:13Speaker 1: pretty cool. And there were some spots, you know, that
- 19:15Speaker 1: were a little bit disappointing, not in Wisconsin, but that
- 19:21Speaker 1: I was hoping that the fan base would still be
- 19:23Speaker 1: there and it just wasn't quite what I was expecting.
- 19:27Speaker 3: But it happens.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Yeah, just say someone stumbled upon this interview by chance,
- 19:33Speaker 4: mate and they don't know too much about it, but
- 19:35Speaker 4: they reckon you sound like you're an interesting guy. Give
- 19:38Speaker 4: us three dither Coma songs that they should listen to
- 19:40Speaker 4: get to know the band.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Well, you should listen to. Moving on to something new,
- 19:48Speaker 3: Adrenaline and.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I mean, I have to say more than survival, right
- 19:54Speaker 1: because that's but if I wasn't saying that when I'd
- 19:57Speaker 1: say vampires, because I think I think the three probably
- 20:02Speaker 1: show the scope of what I'm about now.
- 20:08Speaker 4: I know we're here today to talk about your original stuff, Robert.
- 20:12Speaker 2: You also do front of the.
- 20:13Speaker 4: Australian and Excess Tribute show as well, so you've got
- 20:16Speaker 4: a couple of different hats on.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Robert. How's that being gone that band? You keep it busy?
- 20:22Speaker 3: He's been very busy man. That's that. That was a
- 20:24Speaker 3: real blessing as.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Well in my life because I'd only gone original music
- 20:29Speaker 1: before I joined the show. And then, as I mentioned before,
- 20:32Speaker 1: we did a bit of cruising sort of pre twenty
- 20:36Speaker 1: twenty and got to go across the South Pacific and
- 20:40Speaker 1: Asia and Hawaii and play a lot of really cool places.
- 20:45Speaker 3: And then the last couple of.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Years we've we've moved into theaters and entertainment centers, which
- 20:52Speaker 1: has been really cool for me because my music has
- 20:56Speaker 1: been better received in the US and Europe historically than Australia,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and that's always been a little bit hard, I guess
- 21:08Speaker 1: in a way, because you're always having to go away
- 21:10Speaker 1: from home, Whereas it's been kind of cool to be
- 21:13Speaker 1: able to play stages in Australia consistently, and we've been
- 21:20Speaker 1: on tour now pretty consistently across the countries since February
- 21:25Speaker 1: last year and we're booked right through till June next year,
- 21:28Speaker 1: so I'm slotting in my Delacoma dates in between those
- 21:33Speaker 1: when we had like little.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Breaks here and there.
- 21:35Speaker 1: It's like, Okay, I could book a few tour dates
- 21:38Speaker 1: there and a few tour dates there.
- 21:42Speaker 4: I know those people out there because I've spoken to
- 21:44Speaker 4: a heap of and brow and there's people out there
- 21:46Speaker 4: that think real musicians shouldn't be in tribute bands. But
- 21:50Speaker 4: at the end of the day, it's like it's financing
- 21:53Speaker 4: your original music, Like you're getting paid good money for
- 21:56Speaker 4: doing that, which I'm sure a lot of that goes
- 21:57Speaker 4: straight back into Dela Comas. So at the end of
- 21:59Speaker 4: the day, you enjoy it. But it justifies it means
- 22:03Speaker 4: as well, don't it.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it does.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And I really I had a bit of a chip
- 22:08Speaker 1: on my shoulder when I was younger about doing tributes
- 22:10Speaker 1: to the current show, and one of the things that
- 22:13Speaker 1: changed my mind was touring a lot in the US
- 22:14Speaker 1: and Europe and a lot of the musicians over there. Man,
- 22:20Speaker 1: there isn't a differentiation between original music and it's just music,
- 22:26Speaker 1: you know, So you just you play music, and sometimes
- 22:31Speaker 1: you know, you might play your own music, and sometimes
- 22:34Speaker 1: you might play somebody else's music, but a lot of
- 22:36Speaker 1: the full time musicians and you may not even know
- 22:40Speaker 1: that they might play in, you know, a Nirvana tribute
- 22:43Speaker 1: on the Friday, and then they're playing in a Brian
- 22:45Speaker 1: Adams tribute on the Saturday, and then the Sunday they're
- 22:48Speaker 1: on tour with their own band. It's like supporting some
- 22:51Speaker 1: big band on a big tour. And I kind of
- 22:55Speaker 1: came back from one of the tours that I'd done
- 22:58Speaker 1: overseas and I got asked to do this show, and
- 23:01Speaker 1: I thought, you know what.
- 23:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna give it a.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Crack because I like the music and if I can,
- 23:11Speaker 1: if I can actually gain an income, I guess and
- 23:15Speaker 1: also do something that I really enjoy.
- 23:18Speaker 3: And it is open my eyes, I.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Guess to how big an excess actually is in this
- 23:26Speaker 1: country because I knew they were big, but I had
- 23:30Speaker 1: no concept of how big they really were until I
- 23:35Speaker 1: started doing the show and people start unloading their stories
- 23:39Speaker 1: to you and how it's impacted them and all that.
- 23:41Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, as a musician,
- 23:43Speaker 1: right I feel like you're you want to write songs
- 23:47Speaker 1: that people can create memories to right and leave you remark.
- 23:51Speaker 3: If you will.
- 23:52Speaker 1: And the cool thing about a tribute, I think if
- 23:57Speaker 1: it's done right, you can help people access memories that
- 24:01Speaker 1: they created to yes, somebody else's music, but you get
- 24:06Speaker 1: to help them do that, you know, which is which
- 24:10Speaker 1: is pretty cool.
- 24:12Speaker 2: I know if you're actually aware of this or not brave.
- 24:14Speaker 2: But last time we interviewed.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Him was for the Inaccess show and this one's with
- 24:18Speaker 4: Della Coma, and it's not massively different, but you're two
- 24:21Speaker 4: different people. Like when on an excess one you had
- 24:23Speaker 4: a bit more swagger about you and it was not
- 24:27Speaker 4: a bad thing at all, But it's actually like interviewing
- 24:30Speaker 4: two different people.
- 24:31Speaker 2: It's cool.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Well that's I could just be tired from the day,
- 24:40Speaker 1: but you never know, but that's actually interesting.
- 24:45Speaker 4: But it's like, i'd say, more of a swagger, like
- 24:47Speaker 4: you had more of a swagger. Maybe it's because the
- 24:50Speaker 4: boat was rocking like a motherfucker and there's a couple
- 24:55Speaker 4: of subtle differences. A big bit of music news for
- 25:01Speaker 4: Della Camera is you signed recently with emerging Australian label
- 25:06Speaker 4: X Music. So tell us about that and what sorts
- 25:08Speaker 4: of things that's going to open up for the band.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Ex music is super exciting.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I I'd run across him a couple of times, and
- 25:21Speaker 1: I reached out to him because I saw some of
- 25:24Speaker 1: the work that he was doing with other Australian artists,
- 25:28Speaker 1: and I was signed to an American label and I'm
- 25:31Speaker 1: not touring over there as much and still have really
- 25:35Speaker 1: close ties with them, but I just I felt like
- 25:38Speaker 1: I needed a bit more of a presence here on
- 25:40Speaker 1: the ground in Australia. And so we've come up with
- 25:44Speaker 1: a plan for this for this next record, and you'll
- 25:48Speaker 1: see it sort of unfolding, I guess across the next year.
- 25:51Speaker 4: I'm not sure if you actually remember or not, but
- 25:53Speaker 4: your first meeting with him, when I was there anyway,
- 25:55Speaker 4: it was a little bit awkward because you brought me
- 25:57Speaker 4: in a T shirt and a Vinyl album and Stuggy
- 26:00Speaker 4: Caller and he was there too, and you had nothing
- 26:02Speaker 4: for him. He said can I have something? And You're like, sorry, bro,
- 26:05Speaker 4: I haven't really got anything. And I'm thinking, maybe, well,
- 26:11Speaker 4: you know.
- 26:11Speaker 1: What you're speaking off air like, it speaks volumes to
- 26:15Speaker 1: who Tim is, because he is he is so down
- 26:19Speaker 1: to earth and his is.
- 26:23Speaker 3: He is so straight.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Down the line, but so cool that when I when
- 26:30Speaker 1: I messaged.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Him about like, I said, oh, you know, can I
- 26:34Speaker 3: send you some stuff? And he brought that up.
- 26:36Speaker 1: He was like, we've actually met before, and I was like, oh, man,
- 26:41Speaker 1: so sorry, dude.
- 26:44Speaker 4: I've still got I'm looking at the album now, mate,
- 26:46Speaker 4: so I've still got it.
- 26:47Speaker 2: So it didn't go to waste.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Well, that's good, that's good. I still well, I probably
- 26:53Speaker 1: owe him multiple albums. Now, I'll give him a new one.
- 26:55Speaker 2: How's that nothing to give him the new one?
- 27:00Speaker 4: Before I let you go, Mane, I'm going to put
- 27:01Speaker 4: you on the spot a little bit because I've started
- 27:03Speaker 4: a new segment up called photo Bomb, which basically, before
- 27:06Speaker 4: I speak to you, guys, I troll through your social
- 27:08Speaker 4: media and I find a couple of photos that need
- 27:11Speaker 4: a little bit of explaining. Yeah, I'm going to chuck
- 27:16Speaker 4: this in the back here, and I want to know
- 27:19Speaker 4: how far this relationship went.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Well, look, Caleb, Caleb and I have a very special bond.
- 27:32Speaker 1: We both love coffee, and I took him to the
- 27:34Speaker 1: US for his twenty first So.
- 27:39Speaker 2: All right, I've got one more for you too.
- 27:41Speaker 4: This is the typical Aussie out of water overseas bro
- 27:45Speaker 4: like you are the only one there I with no
- 27:47Speaker 4: shirt on and be with jeans on.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Ha ha.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Okay, can I tell you a really quick story about
- 27:55Speaker 1: this one. So a tornado had just gone through this
- 27:59Speaker 1: fact and so there was a mud pit in front
- 28:05Speaker 1: of the days, right, and I was like, you know
- 28:12Speaker 1: what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna jump off stage and
- 28:15Speaker 1: go to her people.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Wow.
- 28:17Speaker 1: So I jumped off stage and ran all the way
- 28:20Speaker 1: out there, and there was a security guy that followed
- 28:22Speaker 1: me to make sure that I was okay and everything,
- 28:24Speaker 1: and and I was like, and I saw him and
- 28:27Speaker 1: I was like, can you just take a photo? And
- 28:28Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, cool man, So that's security take that's
- 28:32Speaker 1: that photo.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Security taking a photo.
- 28:34Speaker 3: Yeah yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 2: I gets bashed.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Exactly festival that would have been rack Blahoma in Oklahoma.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Very fucking good.
- 28:54Speaker 4: All right, bro, Well that is all I've got for
- 28:56Speaker 4: you tonight. But the song more Than Survival is out now.
- 28:59Speaker 4: The video comes out October eight, eighth premier and through heavy.
- 29:03Speaker 2: There's lots of more to comes from Dellakova.
- 29:05Speaker 4: You guys a no where near finished there, bro, So
- 29:07Speaker 4: jump on the train and have a crack.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Thanks so much for having me in and I look
- 29:13Speaker 1: forward to getting you more new music very soon.
