- 0:12and the Cowboys. It is game Day. It's a game
- 0:15day edition of Football at four here on the Sports
- 0:19Past live on ninety seven to three ESPN. Eagles and
- 0:22Cowboys tonight, and we're gonna get the inside scoop from
- 0:25Inside the Birds contributor Andrew de Checko, who of course
- 0:30is going to be down there at Lincoln Financial Field tonight.
- 0:33Don't forget Lincoln Financial Field is the home for the Eagles. Tonight.
- 0:37We are the home of Eagles Football ninety seven to
- 0:40three ESPN, and of course the Eagles take on the Cowboys.
- 0:44We're gonna take a look at it with Andrew to
- 0:46Checko right now for today's Football at four. Eagles Game
- 0:49Day is here. And Andrew, you've been a part of
- 0:51this obviously since the beginning of OTAs in training camp,
- 0:55all the preseason games. It is finally kickoff night and
- 0:59the vibes are on this team seem pretty interesting. I
- 1:01want to kind of get your perspective is, you know,
- 1:03they're kind of moving the page. They've turned the page
- 1:06from last year, and that has been the messaging here.
- 1:09But overall the vibes around this team, does it feel
- 1:12a lot like last year's team entering the season or
- 1:15is just a completely different vibe around the twenty twenty
- 1:18five Eagles as opposed to the twenty twenty four Eagles
- 1:22when they start their season in Brazil.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels a little bit different, Mike, in the
- 1:27sense that last season the Eagles knew they had a
- 1:31good team. You bring in someone like a Saquon Barkley,
- 1:33you have Vic Van Joe joining the coaching staff, so
- 1:36there are elevated expectations and you get the sense that
- 1:40they're going to make a deep run. But there there
- 1:43was intrigue there. This season, there is more of a
- 1:46business like approach. They've accomplished this before, but they're not satisfied.
- 1:51They're trying to be where their feet are, take a
- 1:54day by day approach and work on continuous improvement. And
- 1:57they're not even acknowledging the fact that they won the
- 2:00Super Bowl and they're just trying to look at this
- 2:03as a clean slate. What you've done in the past,
- 2:06isn't relevant. That's kind of how they're viewing it. And
- 2:09I'm just seeing a laser focus from this group, and
- 2:11that all starts at the top with Nick Sirianni and
- 2:13Jay when hurts.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like it. They say we are the
- 2:15twenty twenty four world champions. That is in the past.
- 2:18They are ready to move on. They're moving on. They're
- 2:21gonna play Dallas and a couple of questions Andrew, get
- 2:23your feel on. They won't answer the questions, but let's
- 2:26see if you can. Is it pretty clear that it
- 2:28will be a Dori Jackson Sydney Brown playing safety tonight
- 2:34and sit and the Dori Jackson playing corner.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's an accurate assessment anyone who's been
- 2:40if you talk to any one of us who've been
- 2:42there for all eighteen training camp practices or just have
- 2:46an idea of the inner workings of it. Dori Jackson
- 2:50started the last three practices to end training camp with
- 2:53the first team opposite Quinion Mitchell. They didn't dress them
- 2:57in the preseason finale. That right there indicates that they
- 3:00like what they see. And then actually, oh, I believe
- 3:03it was maybe Monday, it was Quinya Mitchell and Adori
- 3:06Jackson working off to the side with defensive backs coach
- 3:09Christian Parker, and you had Keelei Ringo, Mac McWilliams and
- 3:13Jacoreyan Bennett working with the kickoff team. So you look
- 3:17at the breadcrumbs there that really shouldn't be a surprised.
- 3:19And then for Sidney Brown, he's simply just taken more
- 3:22of the first team reps this summer. He's gotten more
- 3:24opportunity to work through some things and really fine tune
- 3:28the details of a Dick Fangio defense. So mccouba is
- 3:33the superior player, he's a better fit ultimately in this defense,
- 3:36but he hasn't had enough reps to suggest that he's
- 3:40ready from week one, day one to be in there
- 3:44as the safety. It is going to take the healthy
- 3:48share of the snap, So I imagine it's going to be
- 3:51Sidney Brown to start, and then it just feels inevitable
- 3:54that Drew mccoba will eventually leapfrog him and become that
- 3:57starting safety opposite Red Blanket Ship.
- 3:59Speaker 1: All right, let's get your thoughts in on how those
- 4:01two players, Jackson Sidney Brown factor into the game tonight.
- 4:05You look at Ceedee Lamb, George Pickens, Jake Ferguson, they
- 4:08do have a pretty powerful passing opportunity here the Cowboys.
- 4:12If they're gonna do something well this season, it's probably
- 4:15gonna be in the past game. What do you see
- 4:17in that matchup tonight?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm expecting them to really try to get things
- 4:22rolling with tight end Jake Ferguson. When you have a
- 4:25rookie linebacker like Jahad Campbell and an inexperienced safety like
- 4:29Sidney Brown who played seventy nine defensive snaps last season,
- 4:33and there's not a lot of tape on him, you're
- 4:35going to try and test him and Pepper the short
- 4:37to intermediate levels of the field. And if you're the Cowboys,
- 4:40you're gonna hope that you're gonna catch the Eagles in
- 4:43some coverage lapses. But you look at the other side
- 4:46of Quinnyon Mitchell and I assume that Jory Jackson's going
- 4:49to see a ton of George Pickens, and from a
- 4:52body type perspective, there's a big mismatch there. George Pickens
- 4:57is more of the physical, big body to bove the
- 5:00rim style receiver and the doriy Jackson is on the
- 5:03more diminutive side as a corner, and I'm expecting him
- 5:07to sort of play off coverage, probably give up some
- 5:09things underneath, with the emphasis on not giving up anything
- 5:12down the field. But whoever lines up opposite quinnyon whether
- 5:15it's the Dorry Jackson to start and maybe eventually ja
- 5:19Corean Bennett, They're going to get peppered and targeted heavily
- 5:22on that side. So I think George Pickens is going
- 5:24to see a lot of volume tonight. Ceedee Lamb is
- 5:27the top receiver on this offense, and ordinarily I would
- 5:30suggest that Quinnon Mitchell is going to travel with the
- 5:33top receiver, because that's what vic Vango indicated. But Ceedee
- 5:37Lamb reps an awful lot in the slot, and the
- 5:40Eagles have a pretty good one in Cooper dejen So
- 5:42I think you liked that matchup as well.
- 5:44Speaker 1: All right, to obviously, Andrew, a lot of the questions
- 5:47about the Eagles have been on the defensive side of
- 5:48the ball throughout training camp to hear, but they got
- 5:52joh Had Campbell in the first round. Let's ask a
- 5:54question about him and how he makes this defense different
- 5:57from the defense that had Na Kobe Dean lee year.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great question. So Nakobe Dean and it's
- 6:04important not to undersell what he did for this defense
- 6:07last season. Linebackers coach Bobby King said that the Eagles
- 6:10don't do what they did defensively last season without seventeen,
- 6:13and I wholeheartedly agree with that. But he's more of
- 6:16a tone setting, run defending downhill linebacker who improved in coverage.
- 6:21But now with Jahad Campbell, he arms the Eagles with
- 6:25another rangy, athletic, second level defender to pair alongside Zach Vaughn,
- 6:31and he covers a lot of ground. He has the
- 6:33length that I think should be able to narrow throwing windows,
- 6:37and he's a physical player. But I think it's the
- 6:40athleticism and the ability to have that sideline the sideline
- 6:44range that separates him from Nakobe in that area. Now,
- 6:48Nakobe's one of the smartest Eagles defensive players that they have,
- 6:51and he will have a role in my opinion, when
- 6:54he returns. But you're asking what separates the two, It's
- 6:58just the all encompassing skill set that you get in
- 7:01a Jahad Campbell, which I think that he and Zach
- 7:04Bonn really compliment each other, ideally.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Football for Andrew to check out from the Inside of
- 7:09the Birds podcast Inside the Birds dot Com Eagles and
- 7:12Cowboys tonight. I want to get your take, Andrew on
- 7:15if you've got to hold on what this offense will be.
- 7:18Is it going to be different? Is it going to
- 7:20have a different kind of feel and look to it,
- 7:22or is it going to be Hey Sakwem Barkley the
- 7:24Belcal big year for him and the past game is
- 7:27what it is.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I'm not so sure that I have a charm grasp
- 7:32on what the offense is going to look like, nor
- 7:33do I think that anyone really can, because training camp
- 7:37is not the ultimate indicator of what it's going to
- 7:40look like come Week one when everything's live. But if
- 7:44I'm to kind of connect the dots and look at
- 7:47some of the background, like Chan Gaily, a forty six
- 7:50year coach who had a forty six year coaching career,
- 7:53was a mentor at Patullo and some of the other
- 7:55coaches that Kevin has been around in his career, I
- 7:58think it's fair to surmise that you might see something
- 8:01of a West Coast style offense that's timing based and
- 8:04predicated on getting the ball out of the quarterback's hands
- 8:07quickly and the short to intermediate passing game. I do
- 8:11think you're going to see them push the ball down
- 8:13the field a little bit more because to evolve suggests
- 8:16that you take a next step forward and expand on
- 8:19something that maybe you didn't get a chance to fully
- 8:22showcase last season. So to me, that's the passing game.
- 8:25Perhaps you see the running backs a little bit more
- 8:27incorporated in the receiving game, but that's kind of my
- 8:31read on it right now. We're all going to kind
- 8:33of learn about what this offense looks like in the
- 8:35coming weeks, especially what they roll out there tonight. But
- 8:38I have full confidence in Kevin Patullo, just based on
- 8:41being around them, talking to him, listening to what he
- 8:44has to say, and seeing how he coaches on the
- 8:47field and how he engages with his players. He's been
- 8:49in the building for a number of years. He's entering
- 8:51his fifth year with Jalen Hurts. So until proven otherwise,
- 8:55I think a lot of folks should be optimistic about
- 8:57the Kevin Patulo era.
- 8:58Speaker 1: As our guy on this often, you know, as you
- 9:00had Barkley Brown and obviously Smith Goddard. You know he
- 9:04has his role too, but is there somebody else this
- 9:06year that you're going to have yours eyes on that
- 9:09can add another layer to this offense.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Yeah. To me, it's simple. It's second year of running
- 9:14back Will Shipley. You talk about the receiving element. In
- 9:18my opinion, he's the Egal's most natural pass catching running back.
- 9:21He's a work in progress in pass protection, but he
- 9:24adds another dimension to the offense. He's twitchy, he's explosive,
- 9:28he's good in space, and I think more importantly, Mike,
- 9:31is that the Eagles, specifically Jaywhen Hurts, trusted him as
- 9:34an outlet option on many occasions this summer. And what
- 9:38we've learned from Jaywen Hurts is that if he doesn't
- 9:40have a lot of reps with you, if he doesn't
- 9:42fully trust you, or he's trying to really establish that
- 9:45rapport and that's a work in progress, he's not going
- 9:47to look your way all that much. Johan Dotson's probably
- 9:51a really good example because it wasn't until later in
- 9:53the season where Jaylen started to turn to him in
- 9:56critical moments. So I think Will Shipley because he's the
- 9:59ideal in game change pace option to say, Kwon Barkley
- 10:02and can be that Kenny Gagwall role and serve as
- 10:05that two and four minute running back that the Eagles
- 10:08so highly covet. That's where I could see him carving
- 10:11out a role.
- 10:12Speaker 1: All right, Andrew to check o, let me get your
- 10:13take then on where you know Michael Parsons no longer
- 10:16here big pass rushing loss here? Where do you attack
- 10:19this Dallas defense tonight? If you're Kevin Batula game one,
- 10:22you're looking over this defense, I'm going after what.
- 10:26Speaker 2: I would say, it's the secondary. You attack the secondary.
- 10:29They're going to have trouble covering. I know they just
- 10:30paid to Ron Bland and tray Von Diggs is there
- 10:33Their safeties leave a little something to be desired, and
- 10:35Malie Hooker and Donovan Wilson. This could be a big
- 10:39Dallas Godter game where he threatens that second level and
- 10:42really starts to make plays between the numbers, which is
- 10:45something we haven't seen an awful lot of. But I
- 10:47also think that the inside zone runs tonight for the
- 10:50Eagles should have a lot of success because osa O'deigi
- 10:55Zua their defensive tackle. He's undersized. Kenny Clark's a new
- 10:59addition there, and you have to wonder about the other
- 11:02players behind them in terms of who's swing in for
- 11:05Micah Parsons, and they have some undersized players like Donavanza Raku.
- 11:10I feel like the Eagles should be able to kind
- 11:11of bully them in the running game, all.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Right, Andrew. The other thing is here, Obviously, when you
- 11:16look at the Eagles, we think about that offensive line
- 11:19and how good and how deep they are. Tyler Steen
- 11:22is the one newcomer there. Obviously Landon Dickerson. There were
- 11:25some questions whether he would play. It looks like he
- 11:26will play tonight. But is Tyler Steen going to be
- 11:31an issue this year where Makai Becton was last year?
- 11:34Do you think that that spot is solid and secure?
- 11:40Speaker 2: I don't think that Tyler's Stein is going to be
- 11:41an issue this year. And anyone who of any member
- 11:45of your audience who's listened to me, anyone who's read
- 11:47my work or heard me elsewhere, knows that I've been
- 11:50bullish on Tyler's Steen, even dating back to last season.
- 11:53I've had a lot of conversations with him, and what
- 11:55I've observed from him is a player who when he
- 11:59started a stack days in training camp productive days. That's
- 12:03where I saw the confidence really start to manifest. He's
- 12:06a quiet guy by nature, but I'm starting to see
- 12:09the way that he carries himself in a much more
- 12:12confident manner. And that's what happens when you're out there
- 12:15and you're executing your coaching from Jeff Stoutland. You're hearing,
- 12:18whether it's Lane Johnson, Landon Dickerson, Jeff Stoutland offer ringing
- 12:24endorsements for him, or even defensive players that are singing
- 12:28his praises. I think there's something to be said for that.
- 12:31And he spoke, I guess it was late last week,
- 12:36and he was very transparent. He doesn't want to be
- 12:39the guy that is perceived to be the weak link.
- 12:41There's all pros, there's household names on that offensive line,
- 12:44and then more or less there's him, and he just
- 12:47wants to be able to do his part. And he said,
- 12:49feeling very confident.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Give me a thing from you that you're looking tonight
- 12:54and worried about, like Dallas does this well, I want
- 12:57to see how Philly responds.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I think just Dak Prescott being a veteran quarterback, knowing
- 13:04where to take advantage of deficiencies on the back end,
- 13:09So just throwing it up there and throwing some toutasses
- 13:13and with George Pickens and trying to capitalize on the
- 13:16Eagles the second cornerback and maybe some inexperience there at safety.
- 13:22Just when you have a savvy veteran quarterback like that,
- 13:25that really is their hallmarkets certainly not in the running
- 13:27game Withyvonte Williams and Miles Sanders. I think when you
- 13:30look at the Dallas Cowboys, the only way that they
- 13:33can sort of threaten the Eagles is via the passing
- 13:36the game, and that's what I'm expecting, all.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Right, Andrew. Obviously you take a look at what the
- 13:41Eagles and Cowboys bring to the table game, one banner, passion, energy,
- 13:46coming off the championship, you've seen them all. Is this
- 13:49a tough spot to play Dallas or is this the
- 13:53perfect team to kind of start this season off with.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's the perfect team because, as if
- 14:00you need any other motivation, it's the season opener at
- 14:03home in front of a raucous and passioned crowd. But
- 14:09you're going against a division rival, so you have to
- 14:12be hyper focused because you want to get off to
- 14:15a good start in that case, and it's also an
- 14:19opportunity for the Eagles to go out there and I think,
- 14:22really not a measuring stick because they're they're head and
- 14:26shoulders better than the Cowboys, but but really start to
- 14:29showcase who you are and start to establish an identity.
- 14:32And when you look at it in those terms, I
- 14:35think that there's all that's all the more reason for
- 14:37them to be fully dialed in, and I think it's
- 14:39a really good spot, a perfect opponent for them to
- 14:42be playing Opening night.
- 14:43Speaker 1: All Right, Andrew checko at link at Financial Field tonight.
- 14:46He'll be there the coverage over at Inside the Birds
- 14:48dot Com, the Inside the Birds podcast, and all week
- 14:51long of course during Football at four here on the
- 14:53Sports Past Live on ninety seven to three ESPN. Andrew,
- 14:57enjoy the game tonight. We're looking forward to your coverage.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Thanks man.
- 15:00Speaker 1: All right, and you to check out Football at four.
