- 0:00Music.
- 0:23Everyone. This is our very first podcast. Well, it's a first for both of us.
- 0:28We're virgins here. This is Zone to Speak.
- 0:32This is a new podcast about cycling. I am Debbie. This is Juliana.
- 0:38We are best friends who met in cycling.
- 0:41There's fun backstory there. We'll get to that eventually.
- 0:41Music.
- 0:43But we wanted to do this because we love other podcasts. We love sharing.
- 0:48And we wanted to talk and get a platform out there. We're so excited.
- 0:53This is so new for us. We're both nervous, but we're going to go on the fly
- 0:57and we're going to hope that this resonates with people, that we get to engage this way.
- 1:02No other way to do it, right? Rip off that bandaid.
- 1:05Okay. We're going to do this episode like a fun formula. Who, what, when, why, where.
- 1:10So reigns us in, keeps us in check.
- 1:14So let's get started. This is Zone to Speak. Who are we?
- 1:20So we are your hosts debbie and
- 1:24juliana myself like debbie said
- 1:27we are best friends for many many years
- 1:30we met through cycling in miami i have a triathlon background and i learned
- 1:35so much about cycling with debbie and the triathlon evolved now into ultra cycling
- 1:41and gravel i think that's the fun part about cycling there are so many ways
- 1:46that you can do this you know not even Even as an athlete,
- 1:49you can use it for transportation, leisure, anything.
- 1:52But I love listening to podcasts. So does Debbie. We live in different continents.
- 1:58So we have our video calls here and there to catch up. And one day we're both
- 2:02talking about like, oh my God, we can go on forever. We should have our own podcast.
- 2:06And I was like, I was thinking about that.
- 2:10So here we are. Our idea is flourishing.
- 2:14That's why we also call it Zone 2, because we are on our Zone 2 of podcasts
- 2:18as well. It's our comfortable zone.
- 2:20And we hope to have the podcast evolve and that people will enjoy.
- 2:25We want to talk about anything and everything and have fun. So Debbie,
- 2:29tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 2:32Okay. Well, I am, just to kind of share a little bit, connect with my viewers.
- 2:37I grew up in Miami, Florida.
- 2:39I am a mother of two boys, six and nine.
- 2:43And I love cycling. I mean, I grew up cycling around my neighborhood and there's
- 2:49no mistaking why I'm in the industry right now.
- 2:52Right now, I currently work in a bike shop, a local bike shop here.
- 2:55Shout out Elite Cycling and Fitness. We love you.
- 2:58Yeah, it's a small business. It's a great bike shop.
- 3:01It's just kind of taken on a new role in my life. It's become kind of a way of life.
- 3:05It's more like building relationships, getting to help somebody realize their
- 3:09connection to cycling And how it works for them.
- 3:12So, and that's just kind of the way I approach stuff. I started out doing sales
- 3:17and that was the last thing I wanted to do. I was like, I don't want to work on commission.
- 3:21I don't want to be forced to do something that's going to take the love out of cycling.
- 3:25But there was never any pressure. And then throughout the years that evolved,
- 3:29I've been doing that for like seven plus years.
- 3:31And now I'm primarily doing fittings. I actually got retool certified.
- 3:35So that's fun. That kind of takes us back to zone two and why we named it that.
- 3:39And for me, I thought zone two was perfect because it's a conversation.
- 3:43It's building upon a conversation, building upon what we know and building that good, strong base.
- 3:49Music.
- 3:49And from that, it builds up and you can only perform better.
- 3:53Better so it's like a base starting point
- 3:56and I thought that was just awesome I thought it just
- 3:59went perfect it kind of organically came about plus two different
- 4:02time zones come on yeah coincidence there tool says
- 4:05I taught her a lot about cycling she taught me a lot about life and just a true
- 4:10friendship I think I always struggled sometimes trusting other women and it's
- 4:15funny that we actually met in a women's cycling group we knew of each other
- 4:20but we didn't and actually connect together and become friends till we reached out to each other.
- 4:24And we're like, you're actually cooler than I thought you were.
- 4:27And it was funny. The first ride, right? We were laughing at each other because of our backstory.
- 4:32Yeah, there was some tension on our backstory. But then once we met,
- 4:36immediately I knew I wanted to be your friend and nothing else mattered.
- 4:40So I'm so glad we were able to just, you know...
- 4:45Not be petty just you know we like you said you I
- 4:48think you were I don't remember dm each other and then
- 4:51we're like let's meet for coffee and then after that it
- 4:54was just like instant a true friendship you
- 4:57know like and I think that's one of the reasons we want to have this podcast
- 5:01because we always share so honestly and we want to talk about a lot of the topics
- 5:06we talk about that we think it's important with everyone and also funny stuff
- 5:11and fun stuff not just important stuff we We don't want to be serious all the time.
- 5:16We want to talk about the industry, about women issues, about guys issues.
- 5:20It's not also, this is not a just female podcast.
- 5:23We are having this first episode now, just voice, but we plan to also have YouTube
- 5:30channel so you can meet us as well.
- 5:33And we can interact in that platform as well.
- 5:37I agree. People have to get to know us. And it's nice to let them listen to
- 5:43us first and resonate with us.
- 5:45And then it's always fun when you get to put a face to the voice and say,
- 5:49now there's a new layer. I think it's more relatable.
- 5:52Right. I agree. It's a little bit more relatable. Yeah. We kind of cheated there. We said, what?
- 5:58We gave that away. Cycling!
- 6:02Yeah. I know. We love cycling. We're both obsessed with it.
- 6:06I mean, there's a reason why you're doing ultra events. Because I never thought
- 6:10I would be able to do this.
- 6:12And what made me believe in myself was because I also did alpine climbing.
- 6:17And when you have those mountain summits that you are out there for 15,
- 6:2220 hours, I thought, you know, if I can do this on foot, I can probably also do it on a bike.
- 6:27It's different, but it gave me the courage to try.
- 6:32And I'm really enjoying it. Even though I have had a few DNFs,
- 6:36I still feel so accomplished, you know, super accomplished.
- 6:40When I did the race around Rwanda, it's a thousand kilometers around Rwanda. It's a small country.
- 6:46A lot of elevation gain. What is that? 1,600, no, 600 miles, I think.
- 6:52I did not finish. I did 730 something kilometers. I don't know what is that in miles, 500.
- 6:59But I still feel journey. It's such a journey and it's so beautiful to see a
- 7:04country like that and be totally emerged in that culture.
- 7:09So it's more than a sport.
- 7:12I'm really, really enjoying it.
- 7:15Yeah, I can see how it has already changed you.
- 7:19I mean, I always saw that from the start. I noticed it kind of leveled you out
- 7:24when you started cycling more, but especially when you started doing the triathlon.
- 7:29It wasn't just about, I'm joining for a group, somebody's going with me.
- 7:32It was something you said, this makes me feel good. I'm going to go do this.
- 7:36I don't care. Being a triathlete is really a singular sport.
- 7:40You can go train with other people, but when a push comes to shove, it is all you.
- 7:44And that comes down to you, just like with the climbing, everything.
- 7:48You're there. You're in the body. You got to make that work.
- 7:51You got to find those zones to tune into everything.
- 7:54It's that kind of a sport. And it's very mental, all of them in different ways.
- 7:59But you can train all you want, but if you don't have the mental strength to
- 8:04get through it or know what is your motivation, why you are doing this.
- 8:10It gets harder to get through it. You'll figure it out.
- 8:13If you're not in the right place, oh, it's going to come to mind and you're
- 8:17going to be like, fuck with my thinking.
- 8:19Absolutely. I'm stuck here now. And then it's funny when you do that,
- 8:23something turns off and you say, all right, I'm just going to enjoy this.
- 8:27And then you can kind of come back to it and say, I get it. This is what it's about.
- 8:31And that's what you realize too when you decide to do something for yourself.
- 8:36It doesn't become about joining and doing that.
- 8:40And that's all fun too. Trust me, there's a time and place.
- 8:43And then part of cycling is camaraderie and community too. But learning about
- 8:48that teaches you so much about yourself.
- 8:51I mean, I can't even begin. There's too much.
- 8:54We'll tackle that in a lot of episodes because it is such a mind, body, mental aspect.
- 9:01But what I can say is I saw that change you over the years.
- 9:06From all the reiterations of being triathlete, climbing, running,
- 9:11the different injuries, moving to Dubai, just the different climates,
- 9:16the different places you had to go. Yeah, you've been through all my stages.
- 9:20Like me, I'm always here in Miami. Where'd you go? Key Biscayne. Where'd you go? South.
- 9:24Like, there's what? But still, you are where everybody wants your vacations.
- 9:28I know, I know. I can't not. Tell us about where you are now because it's amazing. It's gorgeous.
- 9:34It's been three months. It's really a mecca of cycling and gravel.
- 9:39I'm still discovering, you know, there's so much to discover on the community,
- 9:43the culture, the cycling.
- 9:45So hopefully there's more to come here on the podcast that I can share with
- 9:49everyone. But I'm excited to be in this new location.
- 9:52Dubai was an amazing 10 years, but it was time for a change.
- 9:57But anyways, yeah, so we are here sharing with you who we are and why we started this.
- 10:04We are just gonna
- 10:07have fun with this new adventure and our
- 10:11plan is to have one or two episodes a
- 10:14month we want to have i don't
- 10:16want to say short but 30 to 45 minutes episodes we'll
- 10:20play with that and see where it goes if we decide to we want to do podcasts
- 10:24we're just us talking and then we do want to have guests on we want to have
- 10:29our community on anything from a professional cyclist to your everyday cyclists
- 10:34and how it's affected their lives. What does cycling mean to you?
- 10:37I think that's kind of where we're heading, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 10:41I mean, I think the podcast world is super vast and it's a beautiful community
- 10:47of content out there and we hope it will contribute and that you enjoy.
- 10:52There's so much for everybody out there, so why not, right? Yeah, so look for us on...
- 10:58All the platforms. We are at Zone to Speak, number two. So Zone, number two, Speak.
- 11:06We want to engage. We want to build a community.
- 11:09We can't wait to do that with everyone. We get to spend time together.
- 11:14That's the best part. We haven't done that enough.
- 11:17Like we're always messaging each other. And yes, we get to a bunch of cycling stuff.
- 11:21But this is really also a way for me and Juliana to plan our conversations and talk to fun people.
- 11:28We are looking forward to recording our next episode and have you there with us on this journey.
- 11:34Yes, we will release some sort of a teaser on our YouTube channel and Instagram
- 11:39about our first episode, when that will launch, what our topic will be,
- 11:43maybe a teaser if we have a guest.
- 11:45So zone in to speak with us, but just follow us, keep track,
- 11:52because we'll let you know when it's coming, okay? And we can't wait to go on this adventure.
- 11:58We hope you'll listen to us and give us a chance.
- 12:01This is an opportunity for us as well as our viewers. All right, everybody.
- 12:07Thank you. We did this. Thank you for listening. Ciao. Ciao.
- 12:12Music.
