- 0:35Speaker 1: great opposition territory pod coming your way. We are previewing
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles in Minnesota Vikings matchup that is going
- 0:43Speaker 1: to be right around the corner here.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Both teams have an interesting seasons to say the least.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And to dive into this pregame preview show with us
- 0:52Speaker 1: from the Locked On Vikings podcast. You know we love
- 0:56Speaker 1: Locked On Vikings, love our Locked On network.
- 1:00Speaker 2: You've got our good friend Luke Brown, Luke Buddy. How
- 1:02Speaker 2: you doing, man, Hey.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Jeff, We're doing interestingly over here.
- 1:07Speaker 2: The same here, man, same here.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Oh my interesting times.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yes, we are living in interesting times in the NFL
- 1:15Speaker 1: where you've got the Buffalo Bills dropping two games in
- 1:18Speaker 1: a row, the Philadelphia Eagles defending Super Bowl champions dropping
- 1:21Speaker 1: two games in a row, one to the New York Giants.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I could not believe what I was watching this.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Past week with everybody. It does, especially those division games.
- 1:31Speaker 3: You guys are the Giants and like they those teams,
- 1:33Speaker 3: know you, it's an eagilizer. I spent my whole childhood
- 1:36Speaker 3: growing up watching the Vikings beat Brett Farv with worse
- 1:40Speaker 3: teams than those Packers teams. Like it happens, It.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Does, it does happen. It's in the division.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Games are so very interesting and there the philadelph Eagles
- 1:47Speaker 1: are going to be playing the Giants actually right after
- 1:49Speaker 1: this Vikings game. So twice with the Giants in three weeks.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Fun times.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Oh god, that's gonna be They're gonna be mad.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Huh exactly, They're gonna be mad.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Absolutely well, Buddy, I wanted to get into this Minnesota
- 2:03Speaker 1: Vikings team, so I guess to start us off, you
- 2:05Speaker 1: know with folks who may not necessarily be following where
- 2:09Speaker 1: the Vikings are at at this particular point in the season. Look,
- 2:13Speaker 1: this NFC North is a strong division at this point here,
- 2:17Speaker 1: all four teams they have winning records coming into this
- 2:20Speaker 1: game against the Eagles.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Vikings are three and two here.
- 2:23Speaker 1: But let's kind of summarize what this Minnesota Vikings team is.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Who they are.
- 2:29Speaker 1: So if you had to describe one word to you
- 2:34Speaker 1: to you know, to really hone in on what the
- 2:37Speaker 1: theme of this Viking season has been and who this
- 2:39Speaker 1: team is?
- 2:40Speaker 2: What is that one word and.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Why right now? That word is probably potential. Okay, if
- 2:47Speaker 3: I could do two words, it's unrealized potential. Okay, they've
- 2:51Speaker 3: been this is an ugly three and two. It's like,
- 2:55Speaker 3: this is not the Seahawks when they were three and
- 2:59Speaker 3: two headed into last week where you felt really good.
- 3:02Speaker 3: They had their game against the Bears on Monday night.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I'm sure a lot of you watched that the opening game.
- 3:06Speaker 3: They played really bad for most of that game. Same
- 3:09Speaker 3: thing in London with the Browns. They played really bad.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Figured out away at the end. They've played bad football
- 3:16Speaker 3: more than they've played good football, and they've found a
- 3:18Speaker 3: way to win a couple of these stupid games. And
- 3:20Speaker 3: then they had Jake Brown and fall apart in front
- 3:21Speaker 3: of him. There he's doing that to everybody. That's their
- 3:25Speaker 3: three wins. So you walked into this season with a
- 3:31Speaker 3: phenomenal group of pass catchers, justin Jefferson, TJ. Howkinson. Yeah,
- 3:35Speaker 3: he didn't have Adison for the first three weeks. He's back.
- 3:36Speaker 3: That's over. You had this retooled O line. You were
- 3:39Speaker 3: really excited about the Brian Flores defense, it looked like
- 3:41Speaker 3: this totally stacked roster injury. The injury bug has beiten
- 3:46Speaker 3: like crazy. Now they're getting a lot healthier after the
- 3:48Speaker 3: bi So we're gonna watch these injury reports. But because
- 3:54Speaker 3: of problems up front with those injuries, specifically with backup
- 3:58Speaker 3: tackle justin School who will see if he plays and
- 4:04Speaker 3: other backups, problems up front, problems with the quarterbacks. JJ
- 4:07Speaker 3: McCarthy and Carson Wentz have both had had plenty of issues.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I'm sure you're familiar with the latter's, oh yeah. But offensively, especially,
- 4:18Speaker 3: this just has not been the unit you thought it
- 4:20Speaker 3: would be when you looked at that rosterant.
- 4:22Speaker 1: It's like a mirror image in a way of the
- 4:24Speaker 1: Philadelphia Eagles. From an offensive perspective, this is not the
- 4:27Speaker 1: offense that we knew from last season at all. It's
- 4:31Speaker 1: not and we're certainly going to get into some trenches
- 4:34Speaker 1: talk in a bit here, but we like to get
- 4:37Speaker 1: into the strengths and weaknesses of the teams that the
- 4:40Speaker 1: Eagles are facing on our opposition territory shows on a
- 4:43Speaker 1: weekly basis here.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So two part question for you.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Let's start with the biggest strength of this Vikings team
- 4:49Speaker 1: after their first five games of the season.
- 4:52Speaker 2: What is that strength and can you describe it to us?
- 4:56Speaker 3: It's a pass catchers. Everybody who's catching passes from of
- 4:59Speaker 3: course Justin Jefferson. He's still doing his thing. The last
- 5:03Speaker 3: time the Vikings played, they played against the Browns, and
- 5:05Speaker 3: the Browns man everybody up because they got Denzel Ward
- 5:07Speaker 3: and they had Greg Newsome. I don't really get why
- 5:09Speaker 3: they tragged him away, but they had these two corners
- 5:12Speaker 3: that they feel really really good about, so they man
- 5:14Speaker 3: everybody up. Justin Jefferson drops a buck twenty on him. Yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 3: doesn't matter how good your corners are, don't man up
- 5:20Speaker 3: Justin Jefferson. This has been the lesson for the last
- 5:22Speaker 3: like four years, right, And a big part of that
- 5:25Speaker 3: in the last couple years has been that Jordan Addison
- 5:27Speaker 3: can punish single coverage as well. And especially if you
- 5:32Speaker 3: just say, well, well, man everybody up, but we'll bracket
- 5:34Speaker 3: Justin Jefferson, it'll be fine. Addison's gonna scurt. Yet he
- 5:38Speaker 3: catches the game winning touchdown against the Browns, he gets
- 5:41Speaker 3: this huge busted coverage play against the Steelers, and all
- 5:44Speaker 3: that dude does is make huge plays in huge moments, right, TJ. Hawkinson,
- 5:49Speaker 3: reliable safety valve over the middle, has all kinds of
- 5:52Speaker 3: utility roles on this team, from chipping helping to stymy
- 5:57Speaker 3: these terrifying pass rushers TJ. Watt and Miles ga and
- 6:00Speaker 3: back to back weeks TJ. Howkinson has a huge role
- 6:02Speaker 3: in stymying them. Jalen Naylor, who is wide receiver three.
- 6:06Speaker 3: He has been open as much as a seven to eleven.
- 6:09Speaker 3: He is absolutely scorching guys. Not always getting the ball
- 6:12Speaker 3: for the reasons we mentioned before, right, but he's scorching
- 6:16Speaker 3: guys downfield, even you know, flipping the ball out to
- 6:19Speaker 3: Jordan Mason or just getting the ball out to Josh
- 6:21Speaker 3: Oliver and letting him try. You know, Josh Oliver has
- 6:23Speaker 3: a touchdown in Ireland. You're or no sorry in week
- 6:28Speaker 3: three Gains Spingles. There's so many places to throw the
- 6:33Speaker 3: ball that it really is is a truly QB friendly
- 6:37Speaker 3: offense once you block it up, Yeah, assuming you can
- 6:42Speaker 3: get at least two and a half seconds in the pocket.
- 6:44Speaker 1: All right, on the flip side of that, let's flip
- 6:46Speaker 1: the coin here. What is the biggest weakness on this
- 6:49Speaker 1: Vikings team as we're heading into this matchup with the Eagles.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'm thinking it's probably on the defense. If I would
- 6:55Speaker 1: have to say, am I correcting that?
- 6:57Speaker 3: The defense is like one of the best in the
- 6:59Speaker 3: leagues statistically, so it's kind of hard. I could talk
- 7:02Speaker 3: about the run defense, for sure. That's been a huge
- 7:04Speaker 3: and that's what I was thinking. Yeah, so far the
- 7:08Speaker 3: issue has been the O line. Hopefully it gets healthy,
- 7:10Speaker 3: so let's let's talk about the run defense. Ye and say,
- 7:13Speaker 3: you know, hey, they're getting four out of five intended
- 7:15Speaker 3: starters back this week. Hopefully there's question marks around all
- 7:19Speaker 3: of that. But the run defense has been putrid. It's
- 7:22Speaker 3: been really, really really bad. So they trade away Harrison
- 7:25Speaker 3: Phillips at the beginning of the season. He was really
- 7:29Speaker 3: their run stuffing D tackle. Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen
- 7:32Speaker 3: aren't really that. Those guys are guys who want to
- 7:34Speaker 3: single up on a guard in a pass play and
- 7:37Speaker 3: try to get a sack out of them, and they
- 7:40Speaker 3: have done that. The Vikings have gotten incredible pressure. They
- 7:42Speaker 3: have like the best pass defense in the league, but
- 7:45Speaker 3: their run defense is like bottom five. It's been really, really,
- 7:48Speaker 3: really really bad because those d tackles you get a
- 7:50Speaker 3: double team on them and you just sled them. And
- 7:52Speaker 3: so I'm looking at a team like the Eagles that
- 7:54Speaker 3: loves to be physical. I don't know what the deal
- 7:56Speaker 3: is with Lyndon Dickerson, but like who cares like Jordan
- 7:59Speaker 3: Malatta and I mean you can you can have whoever
- 8:02Speaker 3: you want at guard, whether it's Brett Toth or whatever,
- 8:04Speaker 3: double team, whoever's at that point in that B gap
- 8:07Speaker 3: they're moving because we just don't have a guy that
- 8:09Speaker 3: can hold onto that. Yeah, they've actually been putting in
- 8:13Speaker 3: Jalen Redman Moore, who is a very unknown not a
- 8:16Speaker 3: household name at all. That dude was an Arlington renegade
- 8:19Speaker 3: I think three years ago, and he is showing out
- 8:24Speaker 3: like crazy. He's he is having like a genuine breakout
- 8:27Speaker 3: season and is starting to maybe push Javon Hargrave out
- 8:32Speaker 3: of the rotation, which is pretty crazy. Wow, Like you
- 8:35Speaker 3: guys know Hargrave, like, oh, dude, I have loved in
- 8:37Speaker 3: the past taking his snaps man, Yeah, they're kind of
- 8:41Speaker 3: right to do it.
- 8:42Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 8:44Speaker 3: So but you know that Javon Hargrave can't really hang
- 8:46Speaker 3: on in the run game too. So I feel like
- 8:48Speaker 3: the Eagles are gonna look at him a lot. Yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 3: They I believe, are expected to get Blake Cashman back
- 8:54Speaker 3: this week, which will should help with the run defense
- 8:56Speaker 3: a lot too. But it's really really hard when your
- 8:58Speaker 3: dtackles just can't hold their ground.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I was going to get into this
- 9:02Speaker 1: a little bit more, and we will, certainly, But I
- 9:06Speaker 1: do wonder if this is going to be for the
- 9:08Speaker 1: Eagles and for the rushing attack that has been suffering
- 9:11Speaker 1: so bad this year. I wonder if this is going
- 9:12Speaker 1: to be a quote get right game for Saquon Barkley,
- 9:16Speaker 1: as he's only averaging three point four yards per carry
- 9:18Speaker 1: this season on ninety i think ninety five carries, which
- 9:23Speaker 1: is like tied for fifth in the league. The rushing
- 9:25Speaker 1: attack of the Eagles just isn't there. So I think
- 9:28Speaker 1: we might get into this in a little bit here.
- 9:31Speaker 1: But as we're moving along with the discussion and conversation here,
- 9:34Speaker 1: Luke like the quarterback position, I really want to dive
- 9:38Speaker 1: into one. I think that is very interesting JJ McCarthy.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Of course, dealing with a high ankle spring and injury,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and former Eagles quarterback, as you mentioned, Carson Wentz has
- 9:49Speaker 1: been filling in.
- 9:50Speaker 3: He's been showing some good stuff legend.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yes, been Joe, Yes, yes, absolutely, look showing some
- 9:57Speaker 1: good stuff over here. He's also showing some not good
- 10:02Speaker 1: stuff from time to time on the field as well.
- 10:05Speaker 1: We still don't know, I guess, as of us recording this,
- 10:08Speaker 1: whether or not McCarthy or Wentz is going to be
- 10:10Speaker 1: playing this Sunday. How have you assessed both JJ McCarthy
- 10:15Speaker 1: and Carson Wentz thus far and how might both fare
- 10:18Speaker 1: against this Eagles defense that I mean, they've been struggling
- 10:21Speaker 1: as well, especially from a pass rush standpoint. Quinnyon Mitchell
- 10:24Speaker 1: if he's not able to play, we're still unaware of
- 10:27Speaker 1: as of recording this. That's a huge issue in terms
- 10:31Speaker 1: of the secondary. So how would you assess where the
- 10:33Speaker 1: quarterback position play is right now for the Vikings?
- 10:37Speaker 3: Yeah, So the question is twofold because there's the health
- 10:39Speaker 3: aspect of it, and then there's like, okay, what if
- 10:41Speaker 3: they're both healthy, what do you do right? Right? So
- 10:42Speaker 3: the health aspect of it, unfortunately, we're not going to
- 10:44Speaker 3: know a lot. Did They just aren't going to tell you. Yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 3: for obvious reasons. They don't want the Eagles to know
- 10:50Speaker 3: who's going to play quarterback. They want it to be murky,
- 10:52Speaker 3: so they're going to keep it murky. We'll see the
- 10:55Speaker 3: official injury reports. Of course that'll be super important, but
- 10:58Speaker 3: that's probably all you're going to get out of the biking.
- 11:00Speaker 3: So table that for now, assume both are gonna be
- 11:03Speaker 3: good to go and healthy. They're all practicing. We know that, ye,
- 11:06Speaker 3: So let's just for the sake of argument, assume that
- 11:08Speaker 3: they're both going to be healthy. What do you do? Right?
- 11:10Speaker 3: The Vikings have made that decision. Kevin O'Connell said, like,
- 11:13Speaker 3: there's the private answer in the public answer. The public
- 11:15Speaker 3: answer is we're not telling you the private answer. Am
- 11:17Speaker 3: not going to tell you, right, So that means that
- 11:20Speaker 3: they have a private answer, right. They know. And my
- 11:24Speaker 3: read on the situation is that they're going to go
- 11:26Speaker 3: back to JJ McCarthy. But if you ask other Vikings
- 11:29Speaker 3: media people, you'll get a different read. I think people
- 11:32Speaker 3: really struggle to read Kevin O'Connell's comments sometimes, But he's
- 11:36Speaker 3: never really been one to say that's our starting quarterback.
- 11:40Speaker 3: He doesn't want to give the dreaded vote of confidence.
- 11:42Speaker 3: He just kind of quietly started McCarthy and quietly stuck
- 11:45Speaker 3: with them all off season. In a turmoil of all
- 11:48Speaker 3: kinds of other rumors, none of which came to fruition
- 11:50Speaker 3: right quietly, they just kind of said, no, we're not
- 11:52Speaker 3: doing any of that, and JJ McCarthy went and started.
- 11:56Speaker 3: He struggled a lot in his first two weeks, but
- 11:58Speaker 3: he also had some good moments like there's grow it's
- 12:00Speaker 3: a young quarterback, right, and then Carson Wentz comes in
- 12:03Speaker 3: and had his own struggles in his own ways. It's
- 12:06Speaker 3: the same stuff you guys saw. It's no different than
- 12:08Speaker 3: what you were looking at in twenty nineteen. That he
- 12:12Speaker 3: makes some cool plays, improvises, He turns down inexplicably open
- 12:17Speaker 3: first reads, he holds onto the ball, He tries to
- 12:22Speaker 3: make the hero play when really he just needs to
- 12:23Speaker 3: get rid of it. Sometimes he panics and flips it
- 12:26Speaker 3: up out to a checkdown well before any routes have developed.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I've called him a first read and improvised quarterback, and
- 12:34Speaker 3: that's not really the kind of offense that Kevin O'Connell
- 12:37Speaker 3: wants to run. And when you ask him about JJ McCarthy,
- 12:40Speaker 3: he talks so much about all the things he's excited
- 12:43Speaker 3: for JJ McCarthy to get better at, not in a
- 12:46Speaker 3: way of like here's all the things he's bad at
- 12:48Speaker 3: and I need him to improve, But more like, oh,
- 12:50Speaker 3: he's getting this down now and this is happening and
- 12:52Speaker 3: we're working on that. That's really cool. He is just
- 12:54Speaker 3: like bright eyed when he talks about McCarthy. So I
- 12:57Speaker 3: think he's gonna go with McCarthy. I can't say that
- 12:59Speaker 3: for and they're not going to tell you until game time.
- 13:02Speaker 3: But that's that's my reap.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And McCarthy's still growing. I mean, he is still growing
- 13:08Speaker 1: as a quarterback. This is essentially his first year, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: he is the type of quarterback coming out, honestly that
- 13:15Speaker 1: I had some concerns with. You know, I'm a I'm
- 13:17Speaker 1: a Penn State fan. I watched JJ McCarthy for many years,
- 13:20Speaker 1: and yes, he mainly was, you know, blowing up Penn
- 13:24Speaker 1: State's defense every down. And again, however, you know, he
- 13:28Speaker 1: goes to the NFL, and like every single NFL quarterback,
- 13:32Speaker 1: there are issues and there are certainly developmental aspects of
- 13:37Speaker 1: his game that need to be honed in on. He's
- 13:39Speaker 1: not going to be perfect right out of the gate.
- 13:42Speaker 1: So I'm wondering against a struggling Eagles defense, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: can we see a productive jj McCarthy if he is
- 13:49Speaker 1: going to be the starter.
- 13:51Speaker 3: I mean so like you're banged up in the secondary, Yeah,
- 13:54Speaker 3: which is going to be a big thing, right, you
- 13:55Speaker 3: have a banged up secondary and we have I just
- 13:58Speaker 3: said our greatest strength is probably the pass catcher. Yeah.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I learned quite a bit about the Vic Fangio defense
- 14:04Speaker 3: during the one year the Vikings ran that scheme, which,
- 14:06Speaker 3: said Donna Tell went horribly, but I learned the system
- 14:08Speaker 3: at least, and a lot of what I think the
- 14:12Speaker 3: Eagles are going to have to do is essentially call gosh,
- 14:18Speaker 3: I forget the name the play call they used to do,
- 14:21Speaker 3: but it was it would basically be quarter quarter half
- 14:24Speaker 3: their cover six, yeah, with cover two toward Justin Jefferson,
- 14:29Speaker 3: And that essentially guarantees that there's a safety over top
- 14:32Speaker 3: of Justin Jefferson. There's always going to be somebody low
- 14:34Speaker 3: on Justin Jefferson and then quarters the other side. So
- 14:37Speaker 3: the Vikings are going to bring out all their quarters
- 14:39Speaker 3: beaters and then run them to the to the side
- 14:42Speaker 3: opposite Justin Jefferson. If I'm the Vikings, that's a game
- 14:44Speaker 3: plan I'm coming up with. And I know that that
- 14:48Speaker 3: works because I saw the Vikings try to do that
- 14:51Speaker 3: stuff to other teams when they had good receivers, and
- 14:53Speaker 3: then we got lit up by everyone's wide receiver three
- 14:56Speaker 3: in twenty twenty two. So I'm hoping for those concepts
- 15:02Speaker 3: to really work out. But you gotta block those yea.
- 15:04Speaker 3: You gotta block it up, and you gotta keep the
- 15:06Speaker 3: oal line you got to. You gotta keep the quarterback
- 15:08Speaker 3: up right, no matter who he is. But with McCarthy,
- 15:12Speaker 3: if he does start, what I'm looking for is timing,
- 15:16Speaker 3: both timing of the actual plays right. Can you get
- 15:19Speaker 3: the ball out top of the drop, maybe a hitch
- 15:20Speaker 3: or two, get the ball out? Can you throw with anticipation?
- 15:22Speaker 3: All that McCarthy has thrown with anticipation this year, I
- 15:25Speaker 3: think better than Wentz has, so I can see that.
- 15:30Speaker 3: But he's also had plays where he holds the ball
- 15:31Speaker 3: where he doesn't quite see what he's doing, where he
- 15:33Speaker 3: gets to the read but he's too late, or he
- 15:35Speaker 3: gets to the rebody's too early and he's moved off
- 15:37Speaker 3: of something before it broke, and the timing is just
- 15:39Speaker 3: not quite there. He's getting used to it, but it's
- 15:41Speaker 3: also the timing in between plays the Vikings would break
- 15:44Speaker 3: the huddle with McCarthy, They break the huddle with ten
- 15:46Speaker 3: seconds left, they got delay of games, you got d
- 15:49Speaker 3: line and tea and off because they know you can't
- 15:51Speaker 3: hard count there's zero on the play cloth, so they
- 15:53Speaker 3: would tee off. You got to back up a line
- 15:55Speaker 3: and you give up a bajillion sacks. There was this,
- 15:57Speaker 3: and this problem didn't really get better with went So
- 16:00Speaker 3: that feels like more of a structural organizational issue, or
- 16:04Speaker 3: it got a little better with Wentz. So we'll see,
- 16:07Speaker 3: so like, can you get in and out of the
- 16:08Speaker 3: huddle right, he's twenty two? Can you take handle these
- 16:11Speaker 3: twenty five word Kevin O'Connell play calls, relay them properly,
- 16:15Speaker 3: get everybody lined up straight, and then actually play some quarterback.
- 16:20Speaker 3: And I think they're still learning how to work together
- 16:22Speaker 3: into that. So you're still getting a very much like
- 16:24Speaker 3: growing pains quarterback situation, or you're getting Carson Wentz and
- 16:28Speaker 3: you know how to attack how to attack them right.
- 16:30Speaker 3: But I would say that health probably impacts this more.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I think if both guys were fully healthy, I think
- 16:36Speaker 3: Kevin O'Connell says, Okay, let's resume this JJ McCarthy thing
- 16:39Speaker 3: and try to get this to work, because I think
- 16:41Speaker 3: that's the vision for the offense that they had going
- 16:43Speaker 3: in and they're not going to give up on that
- 16:44Speaker 3: after two games which entailed fifty four dropbacks total. They
- 16:48Speaker 3: just didn't run a lot of plays in those two
- 16:49Speaker 3: games because the defense couldn't get up the field against Atlanta.
- 16:52Speaker 3: So it's way too early for them to just put
- 16:56Speaker 3: their their young quarterback that they were super excited about
- 16:59Speaker 3: in Rice and limp through the rest of the season
- 17:01Speaker 3: with Carson Wentz and just resolved to go six and eleven.
- 17:03Speaker 1: There's a lot of grown pains to go around as
- 17:05Speaker 1: it pertains to this coming game, whether we're talking about
- 17:08Speaker 1: the Vikings or whether we're talking about the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and we're certainly going to be getting into more of
- 17:11Speaker 1: those growing pains after our break that we're gonna be
- 17:15Speaker 1: taking right now. But Luke, tell everybody where they can
- 17:18Speaker 1: find you on the socials out there again. It's locked
- 17:21Speaker 1: on Vikings podcast, folks, I listen on Apple podcasts. You
- 17:24Speaker 1: should listen on whatever podcast platform you're listening to us on.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I believe you're on YouTube as well. Tell everybody where
- 17:30Speaker 1: they can find you out there, man.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Yeah, anywhere you listen to podcasts. Just look up Locked
- 17:34Speaker 3: on Vikings, Locked on whatever, right, locked on Eagles. If
- 17:36Speaker 3: you wanna, you know Louis I'll be hopping on with
- 17:39Speaker 3: him later this week. Ny nice, But yeah, you can
- 17:44Speaker 3: find Lockdown Vikings wherever you find your favorite podcasts. If
- 17:47Speaker 3: you want film breakdowns, if you want something a little
- 17:49Speaker 3: more visual, my Patreon page, Patreon dot com, slash Lupron NFL.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Most of what is on there is free except for
- 17:55Speaker 3: the most recent few videos. And actually I have a
- 17:57Speaker 3: big long one on Carson Wentz if you want to
- 17:59Speaker 3: watch how once is doing big long one that's totally
- 18:02Speaker 3: free to watch.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Sounds good, sounds good, folks.
- 18:04Speaker 1: We are going to get into some offense, more offense
- 18:07Speaker 1: and defense when we get back from the break stick
- 18:09Speaker 1: with us.
- 18:09Speaker 2: We'll be right back.
- 18:12Speaker 1: All right, We are back and again we are with
- 18:15Speaker 1: Luke Brawn from the Locked On Vikings podcast, and let's
- 18:19Speaker 1: now dive into some trenches talk here, because the Eagles
- 18:24Speaker 1: offense and they're lined that they're having some trouble to
- 18:28Speaker 1: say the least. Yes, they're injury issues. There's just some
- 18:32Speaker 1: timing issues as well that we have been seeing. They've
- 18:35Speaker 1: only been able to score the defense or the offense
- 18:38Speaker 1: themselves a maximum of seventeen points in both of their
- 18:41Speaker 1: last games against the Broncos and the Giants. And with
- 18:45Speaker 1: regard to third down, this is what is most troublesome
- 18:48Speaker 1: as an Eagles fan for me. In terms of the offense,
- 18:50Speaker 1: They're three of twenty on third down over these past
- 18:53Speaker 1: two games, which is absolutely horrendous for a team that
- 18:57Speaker 1: dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl this
- 19:00Speaker 1: past year. So we'd like to talk about the trenches
- 19:04Speaker 1: on our Opposition Territory podcast here at Luke. How do
- 19:07Speaker 1: you see the Vikings defensive front stacking up against the
- 19:09Speaker 1: Eagles offensive line that is having its troubles to say
- 19:12Speaker 1: the least. I know, we kind of got into it
- 19:14Speaker 1: before with regard to the defensive pass rush or the
- 19:20Speaker 1: defensive I'm sorry, the defensive run stoppage we talked about before.
- 19:23Speaker 1: In terms of the pass rush, you know, how are
- 19:26Speaker 1: you seeing things shake out here?
- 19:29Speaker 3: So for the Eagles, I think the interior pass rush
- 19:33Speaker 3: is the scarier thing. The Jalen Carter of it, all right, Yeah,
- 19:37Speaker 3: so that'll be interesting. The one starter we know the
- 19:40Speaker 3: Vikings won't have is Ryan Kelly. He's still on IR.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Michael Jurgen's dealing with a hamstring injury. No idea what
- 19:45Speaker 3: you're getting with that. I think he's supposed to return
- 19:47Speaker 3: to practice this week, but that's enough. The injury report
- 19:49Speaker 3: on Wednesday is gonna be a big deal. Yeah, there's
- 19:51Speaker 3: gonna be a lot of answers on it. And so
- 19:55Speaker 3: you have Blake Brandle, who played center for the first
- 19:57Speaker 3: time ever in London against the Browns pretty well, but
- 20:01Speaker 3: first time ever centers naps weren't quite right. And that's
- 20:03Speaker 3: and and he's a backup player for a reason, right,
- 20:06Speaker 3: I think that's exploitable. You've got a rookie and Donovan Jackson,
- 20:08Speaker 3: who I think has played well coming off of a
- 20:10Speaker 3: risk thing. He got a minor surgery. He should be
- 20:14Speaker 3: back this week. And then Will Fryes at right guard
- 20:17Speaker 3: is a veteran who's been up and down as well.
- 20:19Speaker 3: So those guys are all kind of question marks. We've
- 20:22Speaker 3: been mostly happy with the starters there, but we just
- 20:24Speaker 3: haven't gotten the starters as much, and so I would
- 20:31Speaker 3: say that's probably it. They've been pretty rough at picking
- 20:33Speaker 3: up stunts, but just the vanilla rush for hope to
- 20:38Speaker 3: win hasn't quite been enough to get through this O line.
- 20:41Speaker 3: If you run some stunts some games, some blitzer and stuff.
- 20:43Speaker 3: You gotta do that, but does take time. Those have
- 20:45Speaker 3: costs to them as well. Right, if you pull a
- 20:47Speaker 3: guy out of coverage, you can probably make that happen.
- 20:52Speaker 3: But one interesting thing with the Vikings because of that
- 20:54Speaker 3: physicality issue I was talking about, is the Toush push.
- 20:59Speaker 3: I wanted to bring this up with you, so.
- 21:01Speaker 1: We got to get into the Toush push because you've
- 21:03Speaker 1: got a big article coming out about this. I believe
- 21:05Speaker 1: a three thousand article. Oh nice, I have a three
- 21:08Speaker 1: thousand word touch push. Oh nice, Folks left football. Ye,
- 21:13Speaker 1: not all three thousand are about the touch push.
- 21:14Speaker 3: There's a lot of history of the QB sneak, okay.
- 21:17Speaker 3: And you know, I'm like the QB sneaky's ancient football, right.
- 21:20Speaker 3: The the formation that you see with the Toush push,
- 21:23Speaker 3: there is a clip from a game from nineteen oh
- 21:25Speaker 3: three Princeton versus Yale using that formation. I mean this
- 21:30Speaker 3: is like age old traditional stuff, okay, which is was
- 21:35Speaker 3: a kind of a retort to the Micah Parsons tweet
- 21:37Speaker 3: from that Thursday night game of where He was like,
- 21:39Speaker 3: this isn't football.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Oh yes it is, Yeah, exactly, this football that your
- 21:42Speaker 1: great grandpa will watch. I'm loving Luke's take on this
- 21:46Speaker 1: so far. Keep it going, buddy, Yeah, I.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Think Eagles fans will like my take. My take is,
- 21:50Speaker 3: go ahead and ban the pusher. You won't stop the Eagles,
- 21:53Speaker 3: right because I don't think the pusher himself actually has
- 21:56Speaker 3: that big of an impact on the play. I think
- 21:58Speaker 3: more often than not, the day is by the time
- 22:00Speaker 3: the pusher gets involved. Yes, so go ahead and ben him.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Go ahead and take it away ben pushing of the runner.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Ban the defense from doing it too, and you won't
- 22:07Speaker 3: get all these like forward progress scrums if you if
- 22:10Speaker 3: you really want to do that, But I think that's
- 22:11Speaker 3: hard to do without getting a lot of collateral damage
- 22:14Speaker 3: on other plays. And like the proposal that the Packers
- 22:18Speaker 3: put forth last year, I think would have had collateral
- 22:21Speaker 3: damage and I'm glad that it failed. They'll probably try
- 22:23Speaker 3: again this offseason. The vote was close for the first time,
- 22:25Speaker 3: so we'll see. But I went into kind of this.
- 22:30Speaker 3: The scheme of the touch push is more than just
- 22:32Speaker 3: everybody get together and push nuance to it.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Yes, there is the offensive line is so key. I mean,
- 22:38Speaker 1: there's a reason why. George Malota said, you know, I
- 22:41Speaker 1: fifty percent love it and I fifty percent hate it.
- 22:43Speaker 1: He's like, after like the fifth or sixth time, it's
- 22:47Speaker 1: really taking its toll on my body, and he's like,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I hate it. At that point, it's it's a very honest.
- 22:52Speaker 3: Basically, the sled players hate the sled yep the like, Okay,
- 22:57Speaker 3: I know he's hurt right now, but I've been on
- 23:00Speaker 3: record on Lockdown NFL saying Landon Dickerson's the best guard
- 23:02Speaker 3: in the league, and what he does on the two
- 23:04Speaker 3: pushes part of it. Him and my lotta. So when
- 23:07Speaker 3: most people want to attack a QB sneak, they think
- 23:10Speaker 3: this thing is going up the A gap. This is
- 23:11Speaker 3: the thing that I don't get is I don't know
- 23:13Speaker 3: how everybody watches all these and all these teams think
- 23:16Speaker 3: that this play only ever goes up the A gap
- 23:18Speaker 3: because it doesn't. It doesn't, right, So they point four
- 23:20Speaker 3: players at the A gap and they tilt all their
- 23:22Speaker 3: alignments so everybody's diagonal and everybody's showing their oblique to
- 23:26Speaker 3: Jordan Malatta, and then he pushes them over. If you
- 23:29Speaker 3: watch George car laftis on all of the ones that
- 23:31Speaker 3: you ran against the Chiefs. Oh my god, he's getting destroyed.
- 23:34Speaker 3: He's five yards downfield and he's asked over te kettle
- 23:37Speaker 3: what's going on? And then you see, you know, the
- 23:41Speaker 3: next team line up the exact same way against them,
- 23:43Speaker 3: and the next team line up the exact same way
- 23:44Speaker 3: against him, and it's it's like, I don't understand, Like,
- 23:48Speaker 3: are people not watching this? Yeah, what's going on here?
- 23:53Speaker 3: So I don't think it's an unbeatable play. I actually
- 23:56Speaker 3: did a statistical analysis to the Eagles are thirteen of
- 23:58Speaker 3: seventeen on QB rushes with the yard or less to go,
- 24:01Speaker 3: excluding or I think that includes one scramble one one
- 24:05Speaker 3: Jalen Hurt scramble that was a run, that was a
- 24:07Speaker 3: pass play that happened. I think it was like a
- 24:08Speaker 3: two minute riller, but still right, thirteen to seventeen, which
- 24:14Speaker 3: is as bad as it they have ever been at it.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Usually that is an eighty percent play. That's well below
- 24:18Speaker 3: eighty percent. All QB sneaks for the last ten years
- 24:21Speaker 3: have been an eighty percent play. Teams on average are
- 24:24Speaker 3: like seventy nine point six percent conversion rate on one
- 24:27Speaker 3: yard to go QB rushes. I'm sure that includes some
- 24:30Speaker 3: zone reads, but like for the most part, that sneaks right,
- 24:33Speaker 3: So this is not an unstoppable play. It's a sneak.
- 24:36Speaker 3: It's a sneak like any other, with a pretty good
- 24:39Speaker 3: line and a pretty good schematic. Little wrinkle with attacking
- 24:43Speaker 3: that tilted nose. Get good, that's my thing. Get good.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And I think the Vikings.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Voted to ban it.
- 24:50Speaker 3: I disagree with them. They also tried to run it.
- 24:53Speaker 3: They're really bad at it. They because other teams don't
- 24:57Speaker 3: understand what's happening here. This is now just a rugby scrum, right,
- 25:01Speaker 3: and all of the talk is about the rugby scrum
- 25:04Speaker 3: or the pusher behind and everything like that. No, this
- 25:06Speaker 3: is a sea gap run play that goes behind the tackle.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Look, Louke, tell everybody again where they can
- 25:13Speaker 1: find the article that you wrote about this, this three
- 25:15Speaker 1: thousand word article.
- 25:18Speaker 3: So you can find a uh. Look, there's like Greek
- 25:21Speaker 3: felank stuff in there. It's it's it's it's wide ranging
- 25:25Speaker 3: wide left dot football. Yep, there's Look, there's a famous
- 25:29Speaker 3: battle in ancient Thebes that's like kind of a perfect
- 25:32Speaker 3: metaphor it's fine the weeds.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I love it.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Yes, uh and I'm a trench guy too, okay, yeph
- 25:42Speaker 3: the You can also find a film breakdown of I've
- 25:46Speaker 3: broke down every single twitch push the Eagles have run
- 25:48Speaker 3: so far on my patre dot com slash Luke Brunn NFL. Wow.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Fantastic. All right, Well, moving along with the conversation. Look,
- 25:55Speaker 1: the Eagles have had some injuries on the defensive side
- 25:59Speaker 1: of the ball, specifically Nolan Smith. He's been missing some
- 26:02Speaker 1: time also their number one cornerback, and Quinyon Mitchell now
- 26:07Speaker 1: dealing with a hamstring injury. Not sure if he is
- 26:09Speaker 1: going to be able to play this week. As of
- 26:11Speaker 1: us recording this defense, they're just going through a bunch
- 26:15Speaker 1: of these mid season challenges.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Here.
- 26:17Speaker 1: When you look at this Eagles defense, where do you
- 26:19Speaker 1: think the Vikings can really exploit it? I'm thinking probably
- 26:22Speaker 1: the secondary based on what we talked about the answer exactly, Ora,
- 26:26Speaker 1: Dori Jackson. If he's in there, Oh my gosh, just
- 26:29Speaker 1: been an absolute mess. What are your thoughts here? I
- 26:32Speaker 1: would think the secondary is where the Vikings can exploit
- 26:35Speaker 1: the Eagles defense.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Correct, Yeah, so I remember the word as zeus. This
- 26:39Speaker 3: is the Fangio word for you. When you play quarter
- 26:43Speaker 3: quarter half with the half over a player that you
- 26:46Speaker 3: really don't want to go off, Right, there's a there's
- 26:48Speaker 3: a Justin Jefferson across from you. You would play zeus.
- 26:51Speaker 3: It would be called zeus. Eighteen would be the coverage call. Okay,
- 26:54Speaker 3: And so that's half over number half cover two over
- 26:57Speaker 3: the side with eighteen and quarters for the other side.
- 27:00Speaker 3: So what I would want to do is attack that
- 27:02Speaker 3: by either putting bunches to Justin Jefferson's side, so you
- 27:05Speaker 3: now have cover two versus three players. That's really hard
- 27:08Speaker 3: for uh, there's a lot of cover two beaters that
- 27:11Speaker 3: come from that, or I'm gonna leave Justin Jefferson over
- 27:15Speaker 3: on that side. I'm gonna make sure I line up
- 27:17Speaker 3: Justin Jefferson away from Kieley Ringo because I believe the
- 27:20Speaker 3: Eagles play sides right, they do where Ringo's on the
- 27:23Speaker 3: same side every time. Yeah, So I'm gonna put Justin
- 27:25Speaker 3: Jefferson away from Kieley Ringo counterintuitively, so that Kieley Ringo
- 27:30Speaker 3: has to play quarters. And then I'm gonna have Jordan
- 27:32Speaker 3: Addison and Jalen Naylor over there, and I'm gonna run
- 27:35Speaker 3: quarters beaters at him, much of which might be you know,
- 27:39Speaker 3: posts or just like a fade, and I'm taking my
- 27:43Speaker 3: chances at that matchup with Addison and Keeley Ringo just
- 27:47Speaker 3: trying to like isolate that That's how I would do things. Also,
- 27:50Speaker 3: Kevin O'Connell, because he coached with a Fangio style defense
- 27:53Speaker 3: with ed Donnatel for so long, or for one year
- 27:56Speaker 3: at least, he learned a lot of what he practiced
- 27:59Speaker 3: against it. He learned a lot of ways to just
- 28:00Speaker 3: have beaters for those middle of field open defenses, and
- 28:05Speaker 3: then you just got to be on your p's and
- 28:07Speaker 3: ques with blitzes. Because the thing that separates Fangio from
- 28:09Speaker 3: all of his little spawn that and all of all
- 28:12Speaker 3: of the people that have come off the Fangio tree,
- 28:13Speaker 3: and then DC's all suck. They've all been absolutely terrible.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Fangio has not. And the difference is that Fangio is
- 28:20Speaker 3: way more aggressive with Blitzer and for some reason, nobody
- 28:22Speaker 3: else gets that memo when they leave. Yeah, so you've
- 28:24Speaker 3: got to be on your p's and ques with blitz
- 28:26Speaker 3: pickups and stuff, which is, again, do we have a
- 28:29Speaker 3: young quarterback that doesn't know how to do that? That
- 28:30Speaker 3: could be a really big key here. But if you
- 28:33Speaker 3: do that, then I'm trying to isolate Kieley Ringo. You're
- 28:36Speaker 3: probably not gonna let us do that with Justin Jefferson. Yeah,
- 28:39Speaker 3: but I can do that with Addison and and sort
- 28:42Speaker 3: of put Jefferson away as the decoy and he's still
- 28:45Speaker 3: gonna be able to run basics and stuff and cover
- 28:48Speaker 3: two beaters on his side and still get his Yeah, it's.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Gonna be interesting to see this matchup for sure.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And as we end our pregame preview show here, like
- 28:57Speaker 1: we do on all of our Opposition Territory podcasts, briefly here,
- 29:01Speaker 1: we're going to talk about what both teams are gonna
- 29:03Speaker 1: need to hit on for a win this week against
- 29:06Speaker 1: the other.
- 29:06Speaker 2: So let's start off first.
- 29:08Speaker 1: What's the one thing the Vikings are going to need
- 29:09Speaker 1: to hit on for a win against the Eagles this week?
- 29:12Speaker 3: Luke, you have to keep the quarterback up right, whichever
- 29:15Speaker 3: quarterback it is, keep him upright. Hopefully four out of
- 29:19Speaker 3: five starters are back on the O line and we
- 29:21Speaker 3: have a better job, a better chance to do that.
- 29:24Speaker 3: We won't have to use TJ. Howkinson to chip an
- 29:26Speaker 3: edge all day long because we have some idiot at
- 29:28Speaker 3: tackle that doesn't know what he's doing, but hopefully they
- 29:34Speaker 3: can keep the quarterback up right. If they can do that,
- 29:36Speaker 3: then all of these then so much pressure gets put
- 29:40Speaker 3: on an Eagle secondary that I think is too banged
- 29:42Speaker 3: up to hold up to that pressure. And the Vikings
- 29:45Speaker 3: can probably move the ball with a lot of chunks
- 29:47Speaker 3: all right.
- 29:47Speaker 2: On the flip side of that, what's the one thing
- 29:49Speaker 2: the Eagles are going to need to hit on for
- 29:51Speaker 2: a win against the Vikings this week?
- 29:53Speaker 3: If the Eagles can't run with Sakwon Barkley against this
- 29:57Speaker 3: run defense, yeah, I think that you are sounding a
- 29:59Speaker 3: lot of a arm bells about it. I think you're
- 30:01Speaker 3: starting to you gotta go do trade deadline stuff or something. Yeah,
- 30:06Speaker 3: if the Eagles can't run on this, like, you have
- 30:09Speaker 3: to get the run game going, even if that doesn't
- 30:11Speaker 3: lead to a win. Even if you end up losing
- 30:13Speaker 3: and you're disappointed but the run game worked a little bit,
- 30:16Speaker 3: I would still say you could walk away with that
- 30:19Speaker 3: and say we're leaving here with something. We figured out
- 30:21Speaker 3: one problem and that'll help us going forward. But I think,
- 30:26Speaker 3: I mean, look, if Saquon Barkley gets going, I don't
- 30:28Speaker 3: really see a world where that doesn't turn into a win, right,
- 30:30Speaker 3: But I think it's so important for the Eagles with
- 30:33Speaker 3: where they're at right now, how weird the vibes are.
- 30:37Speaker 3: You've got to get Saquon Barkley going, have that element,
- 30:41Speaker 3: get those boxes loaded up again. You got to see
- 30:44Speaker 3: Saquon go off for two hundred in this one and
- 30:46Speaker 3: you walk into the next game and then all the
- 30:47Speaker 3: boxes are loaded and AJ Brown's one on one all day. Yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 3: that's how you turn back into the Eagles that won
- 30:52Speaker 3: the Super Bowl.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Ast. Yeah, he is.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Luke bron Folks from the Locked On Vikings podcast, fantastic
- 30:59Speaker 1: content out what they got going on over there, and
- 31:02Speaker 1: they're gonna have their crossover show a little later this
- 31:04Speaker 1: week with our good buddy Lou Debassi from the Locked
- 31:07Speaker 1: On Eagles Podcast. Again, Luke braun Locked On Vikings podcast,
- 31:11Speaker 1: My friend, it was great having you on the show

- 31:17Speaker 1: and join us, my friend.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Let's see if the Vikings can get you in like
- 31:21Speaker 3: a two seven wildcardbine round matchup. Maybe all right, sneak
- 31:24Speaker 3: in like idiots and then go get killed in the
- 31:25Speaker 3: wildcard and we'll do this again.
- 31:28Speaker 1: That's gonna do it for us here on Opposition Territory
