Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Adam Ottavino joining us.
- 0:06Speaker 2: You can see him all over the place, including NBC games.
- 0:08Speaker 2: He's been great. Otto, good to see you. What's the face?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Nice shirt. Yeah, he's all biz. Nice shirt, nerd. Looks good.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I'm in between games right here, so,
- 0:18Speaker 3: you know, it is what it is.
- 0:20Speaker 4: I thought you were going to do our taxes or something.
- 0:22Speaker 5: Sweet.
- 0:24Speaker 4: I might look that way, but you don't want me
- 0:25Speaker 4: doing that. I'll mess that up real bad.
- 0:28Speaker 1: We're going to get into some analytics talk later, but
- 0:30Speaker 1: can we first start with Your thoughts on Aaron Judge
- 0:34Speaker 1: seeming like he's just about officially missing in action for
- 0:38Speaker 1: the wildcard round, rightfully so. It seems like a calf
- 0:41Speaker 1: strain that's going to sideline him maybe for that and more.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously the overall thought is it just sucks.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I mean, you know, they waited all year to get
- 0:49Speaker 3: him back. You know, you have visions as a Yankee
- 0:52Speaker 3: fan of, you know, getting the offense together to go
- 0:54Speaker 3: along with this pitching, and then you think the sky's
- 0:56Speaker 3: the limit.
- 0:57Speaker 4: But This injury is tough. You know, calves are not
- 0:59Speaker 4: to be messed with.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Every guy I've ever played with that had a calf thing,
- 1:02Speaker 3: it was a lengthy absence. And, you know, you got
- 1:05Speaker 3: to be careful in this area for sure. I know
- 1:08Speaker 3: he got this PPP injection today, which I never heard of.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I thought it was only PRP, but apparently this is another,
- 1:14Speaker 3: you know, attempt to get him healthy. I think, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 3: talking roles moving forward, I think best case scenario is DH,
- 1:20Speaker 3: but more than likely maybe a Kirk Gibson pinch hit
- 1:22Speaker 3: situation or nothing at all.
- 1:25Speaker 5: Is he... Has this team, nobody can, we've already talked
- 1:28Speaker 5: about it. You can't replace Aaron Judge. That's just, it
- 1:31Speaker 5: is what it is. Have they learned to hit together
- 1:34Speaker 5: without him this year from the games that you've seen?
- 1:37Speaker 5: Because like you said, they didn't have him for majority
- 1:40Speaker 5: of the season.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I think a little bit, you know, that pass the
- 1:45Speaker 3: baton mentality. You know, they do do a good job
- 1:48Speaker 3: of controlling the strike zone and trusting the next guy,
- 1:50Speaker 3: you know, to get the big hit. So they'll take
- 1:52Speaker 3: their walks and that sort of thing just for a
- 1:54Speaker 3: long stretch of time. Without him, they really weren't swinging it.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Ben Rice went through a period where he was struggling,
- 1:59Speaker 3: but now he's back swinging it well. Actually, over the
- 2:02Speaker 3: last week, quite a few guys are swinging the bat well.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Elliot Ramos is one of those guys. Lombard's kind of
- 2:07Speaker 3: popped back into things. So I think they have enough
- 2:10Speaker 3: guys to get some rallies, to sustain rallies, and that's
- 2:13Speaker 3: really all they need with their pitching staff is to
- 2:15Speaker 3: have one or two rallies a game. But again, they're
- 2:18Speaker 3: going to have to trust each other, and it's going
- 2:19Speaker 3: to come against the best pitchers in the world at
- 2:21Speaker 3: crunch time.
- 2:23Speaker 6: Well, is that going to be the thing, though, Otto?
- 2:24Speaker 6: Is that going to be the thing where can they
- 2:26Speaker 6: get enough hits? Because they always hit homers. And that's
- 2:28Speaker 6: kind of been the thing that's hurt the Yankees in
- 2:30Speaker 6: the postseason. And honestly, like in extra inning games during
- 2:33Speaker 6: the last few regular seasons, too, is they can't string
- 2:35Speaker 6: together a hit or two. If they don't hit a
- 2:37Speaker 6: home run, they don't win. And losing Judge and also
- 2:40Speaker 6: we always forget about Stanton. Stanton has been a monster
- 2:43Speaker 6: in the postseason the last few years for him. Will
- 2:45Speaker 6: they be able to hit enough, not just home runs,
- 2:48Speaker 6: against the Red Sox, who actually pitch really well, to
- 2:51Speaker 6: win that series and then move deep into the postseason?
- 2:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head there, AJ.
- 2:56Speaker 3: They've struggled in close games and against good teams. You know,
- 3:00Speaker 3: this is not a new thing. Waiting around for home runs,
- 3:03Speaker 3: you know, it can work in aggregate, but obviously in
- 3:06Speaker 3: the nitty-gritty of these close, tough games with the best pitchers,
- 3:09Speaker 3: you're going to need to find some clutch hits, some
- 3:11Speaker 3: big-time hits. So I think a lot of their roster decisions–
- 3:14Speaker 3: with the offense kind of hinge around this idea. You know,
- 3:16Speaker 3: McMahon's kind of found himself out of the lineup. Grisham's
- 3:19Speaker 3: not in there right now. Those are two guys that
- 3:20Speaker 3: are walk or home run or strikeout. You know, I
- 3:23Speaker 3: think Jones has been surprisingly a little bit better in
- 3:25Speaker 3: the contact department than we thought. So I think that's
- 3:28Speaker 3: the idea. Like maybe it's a Caballero, it's a Volpe,
- 3:31Speaker 3: it's a Jazz. I'm not sure exactly how it's going
- 3:33Speaker 3: to shake out, but they're going to need some guys
- 3:35Speaker 3: who can grind with two outs and runners in scoring positions,
- 3:38Speaker 3: you know, scenario. that sort of thing. And really, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 3: clutch hitting as crazy as it sounds, that could be
- 3:44Speaker 3: the difference in everything for this team, especially in the
- 3:47Speaker 3: first two rounds where the margins are so slim.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Do you feel like the Yankees are a spot and
- 3:52Speaker 5: Aaron Boone's at a spot where he's willing to make
- 3:55Speaker 5: the tough decisions? You already said McMahon. I'm not saying
- 3:58Speaker 5: that's a tough decision, but like, if you look at
- 4:00Speaker 5: Spencer Jones is left on left numbers, it's not strict platoon.
- 4:04Speaker 5: He got cooked in the Booney got cooked in the
- 4:07Speaker 5: diamondback series because he He went with Hedrick, who's been
- 4:10Speaker 5: really good, against Carroll, who's been torching lefties recently. Is
- 4:14Speaker 5: he in a spot where he cannot make the chalk
- 4:18Speaker 5: decision that maybe would help the Yankees win if it's
- 4:22Speaker 5: a left-on-left or right-on-right situation?
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I think they have gotten to that point.
- 4:27Speaker 3: I think he is managing a little bit more on
- 4:29Speaker 3: hot hand and on the matchups that he thinks will
- 4:31Speaker 3: work out despite the numbers. You know, like you play
- 4:35Speaker 3: the regular season and you look at this large sample
- 4:37Speaker 3: size and I get that that's a good way to
- 4:38Speaker 3: operate in general with roster construction and all sorts of
- 4:41Speaker 3: things like that. But at this time of year, it's really,
- 4:44Speaker 3: it's really eye test, man. It's about who's swinging it
- 4:47Speaker 3: well right now, who you think can get the job
- 4:49Speaker 3: done against the opponent. And I do think that they
- 4:52Speaker 3: freed up to that thinking a little bit. I mean,
- 4:54Speaker 3: in the days when I was there, it wasn't so much.
- 4:55Speaker 3: It was much more by the numbers, much more by
- 4:57Speaker 3: that runway chart, you know, green or red. That pretty
- 5:00Speaker 3: much determined everything. But from watching this team this year,
- 5:03Speaker 3: You could tell Booney has a little bit more of
- 5:05Speaker 3: a footprint in terms of making some more gut decisions
- 5:07Speaker 3: and things that he's seeing with his eyes.
- 5:08Speaker 6: All right, hold on. I got to go back to
- 5:11Speaker 6: something you said before. You said the first two rounds
- 5:14Speaker 6: where the margins are smaller. What are you trying to say?
- 5:17Speaker 6: If they have to play the White Sox, the Guardians,
- 5:19Speaker 6: or the Rangers, there's more leeway for them? I don't understand.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Are you calling out the other side of the bracket,
- 5:25Speaker 6: not in the ALEs? That's not very nice. Not very nice.
- 5:29Speaker 5: No, I.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I think you're a little sensitive. I was more talking
- 5:32Speaker 3: about seven games versus five games in the three games.
- 5:35Speaker 4: You know, I.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Think you have a little more breathing room there where
- 5:38Speaker 3: the home runs might play out longer in a seven-game set,
- 5:40Speaker 3: you know, when you have a little more breathing room.
- 5:41Speaker 4: So that's what I was talking to.
- 5:42Speaker 3: But I see what you're getting at a little bit,
- 5:44Speaker 3: worried about those White Sox.
- 5:45Speaker 4: They'll be all right, I think.
- 5:47Speaker 6: I mean, listen, you're a national broadcaster now. You can't
- 5:49Speaker 6: have favorites anymore. You just have to be totally on
- 5:54Speaker 6: the straight and narrow.
- 5:56Speaker 4: No, you're right. You're right. You're right. It's got to
- 5:58Speaker 4: toe that line, no doubt about it.
- 6:00Speaker 6: That's okay. You'll learn. You'll get there, Otto. You're doing
- 6:02Speaker 6: a great job. Just keep doing what you're doing. Quit
- 6:04Speaker 6: rooting for those New York teams.
- 6:05Speaker 4: You'll be fine.
- 6:06Speaker 5: We could keep that split up there right as it
- 6:11Speaker 5: is now. I don't even need to be on. One
- 6:13Speaker 5: of the two of these people are homers, and the
- 6:15Speaker 5: other one is not.
- 6:16Speaker 4: That's it.
- 6:17Speaker 5: So that's that.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Nope, nope, nope.
- 6:20Speaker 6: He pointed to himself.
- 6:22Speaker 2: He pointed to himself. Yes. Dang it.
- 6:24Speaker 4: The camera got me.
- 6:26Speaker 5: The camera never lies. Is this the best rotation that
- 6:33Speaker 5: is going to be in the postseason this year?
- 6:35Speaker 4: The Yankees rotation?
- 6:38Speaker 3: I mean, it's hard to put anybody over them. But,
- 6:40Speaker 3: I mean, the Dodgers, you've got to say at the
- 6:42Speaker 3: same time. I mean, we don't know about Blake Snell's health,
- 6:45Speaker 3: but Yamamoto can match up with anybody. Obviously, Scooble's pretty
- 6:49Speaker 3: good as well. And, you know, Glasnow's pretty great.
- 6:52Speaker 5: As well.
- 6:53Speaker 3: I mean, they have plenty of options. So, I mean,
- 6:54Speaker 3: I don't know. I do like the Yankees, though. Schlittler, Freed, Cole, Rodon.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Hard to argue with that. Hard to argue with that.
- 7:04Speaker 6: I mean, here's his bias again. Scooble's pretty good. Yeah,
- 7:07Speaker 6: Scooble's all right.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Okay?
- 7:09Speaker 6: I mean, I know he only has the last two
- 7:11Speaker 6: Cy Youngs in the American League, and that includes the
- 7:14Speaker 6: Yankees with Garrett Cole, Max Freed, and Carlos Rodon, and
- 7:18Speaker 6: Cam Schlittler. I mean, Schlittler's going to win it this year,
- 7:20Speaker 6: so at least next year, But, I mean, gosh, we've
- 7:23Speaker 6: got to clean this up a little. We've got to
- 7:25Speaker 6: work on this, okay?
- 7:26Speaker 4: I like the Red Sox rotation, too. I mean, just
- 7:29Speaker 4: to show you.
- 7:29Speaker 3: I'm not a total homer. I mean, look, I mean, Holy, Sonny, Ranger, Bennett,
- 7:35Speaker 3: they got some arms.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Hey, if you tell me you like the Rockies rotation,
- 7:38Speaker 6: then we're really going to have to start questioning stuff
- 7:40Speaker 6: because it's all teams you played for, okay?
- 7:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I got you. I got you.
- 7:44Speaker 6: But, I mean, seriously, on that note, we had Carlos
- 7:46Speaker 6: Rodon yesterday, and we were joking with him. He's their
- 7:49Speaker 6: fourth starter, and he's really good.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 7:52Speaker 6: So if you go into a postseason matchup, I mean, honestly,
- 7:55Speaker 6: the Red Sox, yes, are good. And yes, you can
- 7:58Speaker 6: look at the Dodgers. But the Yankees and the Dodgers,
- 8:01Speaker 6: to me, I mean, if you go rotation for rotation,
- 8:03Speaker 6: you go, you know, Schlittler versus Yamamoto. And then you
- 8:07Speaker 6: go Cole versus Snell. And then you go Skubal versus
- 8:11Speaker 6: Freed and Rodon versus Glasnow. That's pretty solid. I'd like
- 8:16Speaker 6: to see that. I'd pay to see that.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I mean, that brings me back to my childhood, the
- 8:21Speaker 3: great starting pitcher matchups, you know, Clemens versus Pedro or,
- 8:25Speaker 3: you know, you go on down the line, but that's
- 8:27Speaker 3: the stuff you get excited for. And that could happen
- 8:30Speaker 3: four consecutive games and really every game of a seven
- 8:32Speaker 3: game series if those two teams were to lock up.
- 8:34Speaker 3: It's impossible to pick who you like more in that
- 8:36Speaker 3: situation because they're both just really loaded. I don't know
- 8:39Speaker 3: if we've seen the Yankees in this position in a
- 8:41Speaker 3: long time with that type of starting rotation.
- 8:44Speaker 5: With who they have, obviously Rodon slides to the bullpen,
- 8:48Speaker 5: or do you think he is maybe not active? Is
- 8:51Speaker 5: that tough for starting pitchers that you've talked to when
- 8:54Speaker 5: you've been in the postseason and you've looked down there
- 8:56Speaker 5: and these dudes are like sitting there all.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Nervous and you guys are like, what are you doing?
- 9:00Speaker 5: Relax. Is that tougher for the veteran guys to slide
- 9:05Speaker 5: down there, or.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Have you just seen it person to person? I think
- 9:11Speaker 4: I think it depends on the guys.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Most guys are chomping at the bit to get the
- 9:13Speaker 3: ball and get in there in some capacity. I think
- 9:16Speaker 3: in this Yankees situation in particular, you don't want to
- 9:19Speaker 3: get ahead of yourselves.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:20Speaker 3: But even if they were to win the first series,
- 9:22Speaker 3: the next series is a five game series and there's
- 9:24Speaker 3: an off day in there. They don't actually need four
- 9:26Speaker 3: starters even for that round. So given that fact, I
- 9:30Speaker 3: think Rodan has to be on the roster for both,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, for the wildcard series and beyond. because I
- 9:36Speaker 3: need him to get him in a ballgame. I can't
- 9:37Speaker 3: have him sitting on ice for potentially two weeks and
- 9:40Speaker 3: then having to pitch a CS start. I need him
- 9:42Speaker 3: in the ballgame, I think, given the way that Tim
- 9:44Speaker 3: Hill has looked this year and Hedrick a little bit lately,
- 9:48Speaker 3: looking like he's running out of gas. I mean, why
- 9:50Speaker 3: not have a disgusting lefty in your bullpen that wants
- 9:53Speaker 3: the ball? I mean, Carlos is that type of guy.
- 9:55Speaker 3: I don't think he worries too much about his routine.
- 9:57Speaker 3: I think he just wants in and wants to impact.
- 9:59Speaker 3: So I'd have him on the roster. I'd be curious
- 10:01Speaker 3: to see what they actually do.
- 10:03Speaker 6: Yeah, you ain't kidding. Plus, you know, the bullpen's a
- 10:05Speaker 6: little bit banged up for the Yankees right now. So,
- 10:07Speaker 6: Rodon down there could give them some innings if they
- 10:09Speaker 6: need them. If they need it. But, all right, let's
- 10:11Speaker 6: go to a different team. Your other favorite team in
- 10:13Speaker 6: New York is the Mets. And you also, you pitch
- 10:15Speaker 6: for the Mets. So, you're going to tell me how
- 10:17Speaker 6: great they are also. So, I get it.
- 10:18Speaker 2: It's cool.
- 10:19Speaker 6: It's cool.
- 10:19Speaker 2: But.
- 10:20Speaker 6: You see Freddy Peralta, and you see some other guys.
- 10:22Speaker 6: You see Jeremy Heffner left for the Braves, and they're
- 10:24Speaker 6: pitching instantly improved. You see Freddy Peralta leave. He goes
- 10:26Speaker 6: to the Rays. They figure out some stuff, instantly improves.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Are the Mets missing something in their pitching development program
- 10:33Speaker 6: or their pitching in general that guys are leaving and
- 10:36Speaker 6: then they're having success other places?
- 10:39Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I'm not there right now with the
- 10:41Speaker 3: current group. I mean, Heff was my guy. He's now
- 10:43Speaker 3: in Atlanta. Um, I know a little bit, uh, Eric
- 10:46Speaker 3: Jaegers who runs their, uh, minor league department.
- 10:48Speaker 4: He's excellent.
- 10:49Speaker 3: I mean, a lot of their guys in player development
- 10:51Speaker 3: have done really well. I think in Freddie's case, uh,
- 10:54Speaker 3: there's a lot at play there, you know, talking free
- 10:57Speaker 3: agent year, uh, first year in the big market. Doesn't
- 11:00Speaker 3: pitch as well as he wants in that middle part
- 11:03Speaker 3: of the year starts feeling it in a way he's
- 11:05Speaker 3: never felt it before. So I don't think it's necessarily
- 11:08Speaker 3: the Mets. I think the Mets were aware of a
- 11:10Speaker 3: lot of the things that were messed up with Freddie,
- 11:11Speaker 3: like his extension. maybe some of the pitch mix stuff.
- 11:14Speaker 3: I mean, you got to credit Tampa for going heavy
- 11:17Speaker 3: change-up usage on Freddy Peralta as soon as he got there.
- 11:19Speaker 3: And I do think there's something to be said for
- 11:21Speaker 3: a change of scenery in the middle of a tough year.
- 11:23Speaker 3: I mean, Freddy's a really good pitcher. I know that
- 11:26Speaker 3: it didn't go well in New York.
- 11:27Speaker 4: But I do think.
- 11:28Speaker 3: There's some reality to, you know, if you've never played
- 11:31Speaker 3: in a big market like New York, Philly, or Boston,
- 11:34Speaker 3: or even Chicago, a place like that, and you start
- 11:36Speaker 3: to really struggle and you feel it from the fans
- 11:38Speaker 3: for the first time in a way you've never felt
- 11:40Speaker 3: it before, I mean, you're a human being that has
- 11:42Speaker 3: to affect you on some level. You know, I also
- 11:44Speaker 3: think about Freddie. You know, he signed a very team
- 11:46Speaker 3: friendly extension with Milwaukee. So he's coming into this year
- 11:49Speaker 3: with a lot riding on it financially. If I have
- 11:51Speaker 3: a great year, I think he in fact even put
- 11:54Speaker 3: out there what his asking price was. And to me,
- 11:55Speaker 3: that's a little bit of the kiss of death. It
- 11:57Speaker 3: shows you that maybe your mind wasn't in the right
- 11:59Speaker 3: spot to handle the New York scenario. So I think
- 12:02Speaker 3: for him, best thing that ever happened to him was
- 12:03Speaker 3: getting to Tampa. And then we can kind of reset
- 12:05Speaker 3: and show who he is again.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Otto, just make sure you know Chicago, only the north
- 12:10Speaker 5: side is a big market, okay? Only the north side,
- 12:13Speaker 5: not south side. Completely different. It's a small market team.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Small market team. But you went from a small market
- 12:20Speaker 5: in Colorado, a small media market, to the Yankees. I
- 12:24Speaker 5: know when you and LeMahieu came over, I heard you
- 12:27Speaker 5: guys talking about how much more information, how much more.
- 12:31Speaker 4: You guys got.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Do you feel like that could be possibly with– part
- 12:37Speaker 5: of the Freddie P like it just feels more comfortable
- 12:42Speaker 5: for him like for you numbers were more comfortable for
- 12:44Speaker 5: LeMahieu he was like they never gave us anything in
- 12:47Speaker 5: Colorado teams can be super far behind like that's okay
- 12:52Speaker 5: to say that the Mets are behind the Rays correct.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah I just I just don't actually know if that's
- 12:59Speaker 3: true I mean teams can be certainly I just don't
- 13:01Speaker 3: know that it's true I mean I never felt like
- 13:03Speaker 3: I had a lack of information or help with the
- 13:05Speaker 3: Mets uh to be fair I mean you know, I mean,
- 13:07Speaker 3: you get in arguments about their models and the things
- 13:10Speaker 3: that they favor and, you know, philosophy and things like that.
- 13:14Speaker 3: But I mean, make no mistake about it. Like the
- 13:16Speaker 3: Mets are trying to win ballgames. They're trying to put
- 13:18Speaker 3: the best people in position to help these guys. But yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 3: every time you move from one team to another team,
- 13:24Speaker 3: it kind of highlights the fact that you have to
- 13:26Speaker 3: be your own pitching coach. You have to know the
- 13:27Speaker 3: things that resonate with you because you're likely not to
- 13:30Speaker 3: stay with one team forever and have somebody holding your hand.
- 13:32Speaker 3: So That was the biggest thing for me coming from Colorado.
- 13:35Speaker 3: I kind of figured out who I was, so I
- 13:36Speaker 3: was able to go in New York and be myself. And, yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 3: they threw a lot of numbers at me, but I
- 13:40Speaker 3: was at a point in my career where I felt
- 13:42Speaker 3: like I could pick and choose what to listen to,
- 13:44Speaker 3: if that makes sense.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Gosh, that was such a good national reporter, national analyst
- 13:49Speaker 5: answer right there.
- 13:50Speaker 4: I love it.
- 13:51Speaker 5: I love it.
- 13:51Speaker 6: You're getting better. As this interview goes on, you keep
- 13:54Speaker 6: getting better and better, so it's awesome. I love how
- 13:56Speaker 6: you're growing. You're flowering in front of us. You mentioned
- 13:59Speaker 6: the Red Sox. The Red Sox play the Guardians these
- 14:03Speaker 6: next three games, and the matchup is pretty insane. Will
- 14:06Speaker 6: this help the Red Sox get ready for the postseason,
- 14:09Speaker 6: playing these playoff type of games for the Guardians? And
- 14:12Speaker 6: can the Guardians get through the Red Sox and hold
- 14:15Speaker 6: on and win this division?
- 14:18Speaker 4: Man, I mean, it is an interesting series.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Now that the Red Sox have clinched and their fate
- 14:22Speaker 3: is sealed, they just extended a whole bunch of people today, right,
- 14:24Speaker 3: Tracy and Brez?
- 14:26Speaker 4: So, I mean... I don't know.
- 14:27Speaker 3: You know, you got to be tricky to take your
- 14:29Speaker 3: foot off the gas. It's tricky to do that. I
- 14:31Speaker 3: think you got to just play it straight. Obviously from
- 14:33Speaker 3: a management side, you make sure no pitcher throws too
- 14:35Speaker 3: much and that sort of thing. But I think the
- 14:37Speaker 3: Red Sox play it straight. They practice competing at a
- 14:40Speaker 3: high level. You don't want to turn down the dial
- 14:42Speaker 3: before you head into a series in the Bronx. As
- 14:44Speaker 3: for Cleveland, they're going to be playing desperate baseball. I
- 14:47Speaker 3: think they've been doing that for a while, so they're
- 14:49Speaker 3: comfortable in that spot. But yeah, I mean, it's tough.
- 14:51Speaker 3: They're running into the hardest opponent compared to the White Sox,
- 14:55Speaker 3: certainly here down the stretch in the Red Sox. So
- 14:57Speaker 3: I think it's a good series. I think both teams
- 14:58Speaker 3: will fight hard. The only scenario I think that really
- 15:02Speaker 3: benefits Cleveland here is I don't think Sonny Gray is
- 15:06Speaker 3: going to throw 120 pitches or anything like that. Ultimately,
- 15:10Speaker 3: the Red Sox are going to be kind of half
- 15:12Speaker 3: managing their workloads, but at the same time, I think
- 15:14Speaker 3: they'll be playing hard.
- 15:16Speaker 5: Who are you most concerned about going into the playoffs?
- 15:21Speaker 4: Team-wise? Team-wise. You know, probably the Cubs.
- 15:29Speaker 3: For me, I mean, as good as their offense is,
- 15:31Speaker 3: I'm worried that Bregman won't be back. You know, that
- 15:33Speaker 3: injury was pretty horrific. You know, he's going to try
- 15:36Speaker 3: to fight through it.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Obviously, he'll play. But I'm worried about their pitching.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I just don't see enough swing and miss with their
- 15:41Speaker 3: pitching to get through some of the big boys in
- 15:44Speaker 3: the NL. So I think they're a really good team,
- 15:46Speaker 3: but I think they're deficient in one area. And unless
- 15:50Speaker 3: these balls are hit in a place where their spectacular
- 15:52Speaker 3: defense can impact all the time, I think they're going
- 15:55Speaker 3: to run into it a little bit.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Gosh, I like you. I like you, Otto. I like you.
- 16:00Speaker 6: You just keep growing on me. You just keep growing
- 16:03Speaker 6: on me. Man, I like you. I've always liked you,
- 16:06Speaker 6: but now I really like you.
- 16:07Speaker 4: So thank you. Thank you.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Thank you for having my back.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 16:12Speaker 6: With all these teams, Cratch, clinching postseason bursts, geez, a
- 16:16Speaker 6: lot of teams have already clinched. You know what that means? SeatGeek.
- 16:18Speaker 6: You can plan ahead and start buying your postseason tickets
- 16:22Speaker 6: on SeatGeek.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Just because you're not a fan of those teams, though,
- 16:26Speaker 5: doesn't mean that these last games of the season aren't
- 16:30Speaker 5: going to be electric. It doesn't matter who you're playing.
- 16:32Speaker 5: You're playing the worst team, the game matters. You're playing
- 16:35Speaker 5: the best team, the game matters. You've got to get
- 16:37Speaker 5: on SeatGeek and look ahead for when your team's in
- 16:40Speaker 5: the home.
- 16:40Speaker 6: Find the seat you want. If it's green, it means
- 16:42Speaker 6: a good deal. If it's red, eh, not so much.
- 16:44Speaker 6: But you might love the seat and you might love
- 16:46Speaker 6: the angle and you might get a foul ball. So
- 16:48Speaker 6: go on SeatGeek, find the game you want, find the
- 16:50Speaker 6: matchup you want, and go watch the game because it's
- 16:53Speaker 6: Major League Baseball and it matters down the stretch. Pennant

- 17:11Speaker 6: you can use it later.
- 17:19Speaker 2: That's what he said. Yeah, that's what he said, presented
- 17:21Speaker 2: by Lorainco.
- 17:22Speaker 1: We're bringing back Adam Adovino to help us with this
- 17:25Speaker 1: one because it actually could be defining for the World
- 17:29Speaker 1: Baseball Classic. Otto, Paul Skeen's pitches in the WBC does
- 17:33Speaker 1: not have a Paul Skeen's year. velocity, not what it
- 17:36Speaker 1: looks like. And there's a good story that's out. Colin
- 17:40Speaker 1: Beasley wrote it. And there are quotes from Skeen saying
- 17:43Speaker 1: there are a lot of other factors. So I don't
- 17:44Speaker 1: want to put everything on that, but I feel like
- 17:47Speaker 1: that was kind of the root of it a little bit.
- 17:48Speaker 1: He's referring to the WBC said, usually that time of year,
- 17:51Speaker 1: you're kind of ramping up.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It's a little bit slow.
- 17:53Speaker 1: You kind of get into that slope and find your
- 17:55Speaker 1: body one live BP you're topping at 97. Then the
- 17:58Speaker 1: next year, 98, 99. That wasn't the case this year.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Looking back, I don't think that really helped. So Your thoughts,
- 18:04Speaker 1: can you break this down for us and also spin
- 18:06Speaker 1: it forward to how it could cause a problem when
- 18:10Speaker 1: Paul Skeen's very notable name is putting quotes out there
- 18:14Speaker 1: to knock the WBC for potentially hurting his season?
- 18:19Speaker 3: Yeah, actually, when I saw the quotes, I was like,
- 18:21Speaker 3: rest in peace, WBC. Like, people are going to be
- 18:23Speaker 3: panicking now. Like, don't play in this thing.
- 18:25Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know. It bugs me a little.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Bit because I just felt like he's been asked about it,
- 18:30Speaker 3: him and Logan Webb, 100,000 times this year.
- 18:32Speaker 4: And eventually you're going to be like, all.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Right, maybe it's a thing. Look, I mean, it's a
- 18:38Speaker 3: different preparation. I played in three of these things. Obviously,
- 18:41Speaker 3: I'm not a starting pitcher. I'm not on the level
- 18:43Speaker 3: of Paul Skeens. But I feel like, you know, you
- 18:46Speaker 3: prepare accordingly. It shouldn't be. the root cause of a
- 18:50Speaker 3: down year and when I watch Paul pitch this year
- 18:53Speaker 3: yes the velocity is down but it's plenty enough to
- 18:56Speaker 3: get guys out you know he's averaging right around 97
- 18:58Speaker 3: miles an hour so for me it was more his
- 19:00Speaker 3: delivery was out of sync he hasn't executed the same
- 19:03Speaker 3: and then on top of that he's running to some
- 19:04Speaker 3: bad luck so combination of things I'm very curious to
- 19:08Speaker 3: watch him and what he does this offseason to rectify
- 19:11Speaker 3: because that's the mark of a truly great pitcher somebody
- 19:13Speaker 3: will remember forever is not their peak but how they
- 19:16Speaker 3: were able to get back to that peak time and
- 19:17Speaker 3: time again uh, despite the adversity.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Did you ever have something in spring training? Cause essentially
- 19:22Speaker 5: a WBC is spring training that you pitched really well
- 19:27Speaker 5: through for two months. And then you're like, June, you're like, ah, man,
- 19:31Speaker 5: this thing is creeping up. I knew it was going
- 19:33Speaker 5: to creep up at some point because essentially that's what
- 19:35Speaker 5: skeins is saying here.
- 19:36Speaker 6: Correct.
- 19:39Speaker 3: I think so. Um, I, I, I, I think he
- 19:42Speaker 3: doesn't really know. I mean, I think he's throwing stuff
- 19:45Speaker 3: at the wall. I mean, he, looked good in the WBC, right?
- 19:49Speaker 3: There has been times with your arm where you feel
- 19:52Speaker 3: like you're compromised and you can either get that cleaned
- 19:54Speaker 3: up and get back to 100% over time or it
- 19:57Speaker 3: can kind of slide the other direction when you're a
- 19:59Speaker 3: younger pitcher and you've been largely healthy like he has
- 20:02Speaker 3: been the last few years. Sometimes you don't really have
- 20:04Speaker 3: your head wrapped around how to fix something. it's one
- 20:06Speaker 3: of the things that I always talk about with young pitchers. Like, yeah,
- 20:09Speaker 3: I could tell you what I did to stay healthy,
- 20:10Speaker 3: but you're going to face different challenges. You throw different
- 20:13Speaker 3: than me. You have a different body. So until you've
- 20:15Speaker 3: kind of been through the pitfalls of your own delivery
- 20:18Speaker 3: and your own process, like, oh, sometimes this creeps in
- 20:21Speaker 3: or that creeps in, you don't necessarily have all the
- 20:23Speaker 3: answers when you're 24 years old.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:25Speaker 3: So for me, it's like, we'll see how he responds
- 20:28Speaker 3: to this, but yeah, it's not uncommon.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You're a human.
- 20:31Speaker 3: So you're always dealing with something and At times, things
- 20:34Speaker 3: you think you can hold them off, and then eventually
- 20:36Speaker 3: they become bigger and bigger.
- 20:37Speaker 6: All right, here's my question. We've heard Cal Raleigh mention this,
- 20:41Speaker 6: Paul Skeens, Logan Webb. Paul Skeens had a great first
- 20:44Speaker 6: two months, and, you know, Pete Crow Armstrong played in
- 20:47Speaker 6: the WBC, and he's going to be the MVP. I mean,
- 20:51Speaker 6: there's a there's a long list of guys that have
- 20:53Speaker 6: played in it and have done good or bad. But
- 20:55Speaker 6: why is it? Is it just the easy excuse, you think,
- 20:58Speaker 6: to say, oh, well, he was in the WBC. So
- 21:00Speaker 6: he's he's not doing as well as he did last
- 21:02Speaker 6: year just because he missed those, you know, two, three
- 21:05Speaker 6: weeks or whatever. I mean, Gunnar Henderson played in the WBC.
- 21:08Speaker 6: He's not having a great year. Right. So there's a
- 21:10Speaker 6: long list. Jack Caglione played in the WBC. He's having
- 21:13Speaker 6: a kick ass year. So it just is it just
- 21:15Speaker 6: the easy excuse to say, oh, well, he did this
- 21:18Speaker 6: and he's not having a great year. It's that thing's fault.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Kind of, yeah. I kind of feel that way.
- 21:24Speaker 3: It's like a superstitious thing, almost. I mean, I remember
- 21:26Speaker 3: I played with Raphael Betancourt, who had his worst season
- 21:28Speaker 3: ever of his career was after he played in the WBC,
- 21:30Speaker 3: and he's telling me, I'll never play in that again.
- 21:33Speaker 4: You know, that ruined my season, right?
- 21:35Speaker 3: But then, like, some of my best years were following
- 21:37Speaker 3: the WBC individually, and I've seen it go both ways.
- 21:39Speaker 4: So, I mean, I don't know.
- 21:41Speaker 3: If you get asked about it enough, eventually maybe it
- 21:44Speaker 3: creeps into your head, so I'm not blaming Paul for
- 21:47Speaker 3: saying that it might have contributed, because I know he's
- 21:49Speaker 3: been asked... almost every time after he pitches what's wrong
- 21:53Speaker 3: with you and that's just a tough place to be
- 21:55Speaker 3: and you're going to start searching for answers and you
- 21:56Speaker 3: look for the variable that was different and it was
- 21:59Speaker 3: like you know what we did have a wbc this
- 22:00Speaker 3: year so i'm not blaming these guys for uh maybe
- 22:04Speaker 3: thinking it could have something to do with it but
- 22:05Speaker 3: it's just like anything else in baseball oh i pitch
- 22:08Speaker 3: bad with my socks high and now i'm gonna wear
- 22:10Speaker 3: pants down you know okay this glove not getting outs
- 22:13Speaker 3: anymore i'm chucking it away i'm starting fresh so i
- 22:15Speaker 3: don't know if you always have the answers like Who knows?
- 22:19Speaker 3: I honestly have no idea what the impact of the
- 22:21Speaker 3: WBC is or isn't on the season. And we've seen
- 22:23Speaker 3: guys go both ways to your point. So for me,
- 22:25Speaker 3: it just feels like a little bit of an excuse,
- 22:27Speaker 3: but maybe an excuse that makes sense given how often
- 22:29Speaker 3: you're asked about it.
- 22:31Speaker 5: I pitched in your glove and I gave up a
- 22:33Speaker 5: home run. So is that my fault, your fault, or
- 22:38Speaker 5: did it not really matter?
- 22:41Speaker 3: I mean, you know, the answer is probably it didn't matter,
- 22:43Speaker 3: but I'll take the blame for it. I mean, my gloves,
- 22:45Speaker 3: you know, I gave it up sometimes.
- 22:48Speaker 5: I'm taking the blame for it because I have broader
- 22:50Speaker 5: shoulders and my ERA doesn't matter as much. My last
- 22:53Speaker 5: question for you on the Paul Skeen stuff. You said
- 22:56Speaker 5: RIP WBC. Maybe RIP WBC in the format that it's in.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Could you see it moved to a mid-season classic?
- 23:09Speaker 3: I mean, the format I would like personally is to
- 23:12Speaker 3: play the pool play where they play it now and
- 23:15Speaker 3: then play all the knockout round in the midseason. I
- 23:17Speaker 3: think it would be so exciting. You know, there's so
- 23:19Speaker 3: much talk about it leading up to it. And I
- 23:22Speaker 3: think it would just be epic in the middle of
- 23:23Speaker 3: the summer with everybody at full bore. But I don't
- 23:25Speaker 3: know if that'll ever happen. I mean, that's just me
- 23:28Speaker 3: putting my fan hat on and what I would like
- 23:29Speaker 3: to see for the most excitement. I don't know what
- 23:32Speaker 3: the answer is for the timing of this thing. I've
- 23:34Speaker 3: heard a lot of people who are a lot more
- 23:35Speaker 3: passionate about it than me. I never had a problem
- 23:37Speaker 3: with the timing. I was like, I'm a reliever. I'll
- 23:39Speaker 3: get ready a little bit earlier. I'll pitch and it'll
- 23:40Speaker 3: be great. And I'll just go off of adrenaline and
- 23:43Speaker 3: whatever it is, it is. It's a little bit of
- 23:44Speaker 3: a different situation, but you know, we'll make do and
- 23:47Speaker 3: we'll enjoy it. You know, it's fun playing for your
- 23:49Speaker 3: country and playing in an international tournament. You don't get
- 23:52Speaker 3: to play tournament style baseball like a lot. So I
- 23:54Speaker 3: love that. But yeah, if it were me for fun,
- 23:56Speaker 3: I'd like to see something in the mid season just because.
- 23:59Speaker 4: I like the buildup before a big.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Game, a big event like that, you know, especially over
- 24:02Speaker 3: a couple of months.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Here, I'll finish with this, my prediction, and let me
- 24:06Speaker 1: know if you agree with me. RIP WBC, I would
- 24:10Speaker 1: say to pitchers that are pre-contract, right? Like pre-free agency,
- 24:15Speaker 1: a pitcher in Paul Skeen's place. That's where I think
- 24:18Speaker 1: there's a separation. I know there are some bets that
- 24:20Speaker 1: don't want to mess with this either, but you tell me, right?
- 24:23Speaker 1: Like you're out of the game now. And I know
- 24:25Speaker 1: for players are always talking about winning and all that,
- 24:27Speaker 1: but Contract and individualism matters in the sport too. And
- 24:31Speaker 1: before you get paid as an arm, it's a big deal.
- 24:34Speaker 1: So do you think that will be a big factor
- 24:37Speaker 1: going forward? I think that's the separator. Skeens to me
- 24:39Speaker 1: was a little different because you're like, oh, Paul Skeens
- 24:42Speaker 1: is going to pitch before a big season for him.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I know he's still got a few years away from
- 24:45Speaker 1: spring training, but you don't see as much of that,
- 24:47Speaker 1: especially from American pitchers.
- 24:50Speaker 4: I couldn't agree with you more. I mean, yeah, people
- 24:52Speaker 4: will be thinking twice.
- 24:53Speaker 3: We've now got a couple examples of things going wrong,
- 24:56Speaker 3: whether it be poor performance or like a freak injury
- 24:58Speaker 3: like the Edwin Diaz situation or even this year with Scooble.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Like Scooble pitched where he pitched the one game and
- 25:03Speaker 3: then it's like, is he going to keep pitching?
- 25:04Speaker 4: Is he going to not keep pitching?
- 25:06Speaker 3: And he was kind of on the fence the whole
- 25:07Speaker 3: time because his contract thing is obviously up in the air, too.
- 25:10Speaker 4: So I don't know. I think you're right.
- 25:12Speaker 3: If guys have too much to lose, I think now
- 25:14Speaker 3: they'll use his examples and they'll they'll shy away.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Adam, thanks for the extended time, dude.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Really appreciate it. Helpful insight for us. Just two catchers
- 25:22Speaker 1: and a dude who has never played, so.
- 25:24Speaker 6: The pitching helps. Can I ask one more question before
- 25:27Speaker 6: we go? This popped into my head, and I was
- 25:28Speaker 6: thinking about Adam's career. He had an unbelievable career. But
- 25:31Speaker 6: you were a two-pitch guy, right, your entire career?
- 25:34Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I invented a lot of other pitches
- 25:36Speaker 3: along the way to have a full arsenal, but they
- 25:38Speaker 3: were all a distraction. I mean, everything else was just like, hey,
- 25:41Speaker 3: I don't want to throw as many sinkers or sliders.
- 25:42Speaker 4: So I had a cutter. I had four seam. I
- 25:45Speaker 4: had change up. I had all these pitches.
- 25:47Speaker 3: But it was all just like, hey, just not to
- 25:49Speaker 3: overexpose the sinker-slider combo.
- 25:51Speaker 4: Okay, that was my point.
- 25:53Speaker 6: Because I did Refuse to Lose Territory today, which is
- 25:56Speaker 6: our Mariners show. And we were talking about Andres Munoz.
- 26:00Speaker 6: And he's given up more home runs this year, and
- 26:01Speaker 6: his numbers are a little bit worse. And I said, well,
- 26:03Speaker 6: as a two-pitch guy, you know, you get into patterns.
- 26:06Speaker 6: Because he does throw a changeup to lefties, but not
- 26:09Speaker 6: a lot. It's mostly fastball slider. And I just wanted
- 26:12Speaker 6: to say, did you ever have to look at, like,
- 26:13Speaker 6: pitch count, count charts? Did you have to look at
- 26:16Speaker 6: patterns that you threw? So to try to get guys
- 26:19Speaker 6: a little bit off of what you would normally throw
- 26:21Speaker 6: in situations?
- 26:23Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, 100%.
- 26:24Speaker 3: And I mean, especially in the days of playing in
- 26:26Speaker 3: the division so often, like when there was more divisional games,
- 26:29Speaker 3: you face the same guys over and over and over again. So,
- 26:32Speaker 3: I mean, I literally created a cutter at one point
- 26:34Speaker 3: just to steal first pitch strikes and to hold back
- 26:37Speaker 3: throwing my slider and sinker as much. Like, again, it
- 26:39Speaker 3: was all just smoke and mirrors. because if you just
- 26:42Speaker 3: go sinker, slider, or if you're just fastball changeup like
- 26:45Speaker 3: a Devin Williams, no matter how nasty they are, guys
- 26:48Speaker 3: can sit on one or the other. They know they're
- 26:49Speaker 3: going to get them, and they know what window to
- 26:51Speaker 3: look for them in. So I was trying to create
- 26:53Speaker 3: as much distraction as possible. Hey, go ahead, pay attention
- 26:56Speaker 3: to my cutter, pay attention to my changeup, whatever. That
- 26:59Speaker 3: way I could go back to my bread and butter
- 27:00Speaker 3: when it mattered.
- 27:02Speaker 5: And you talk about the hit charts and pitch charts
- 27:05Speaker 5: or pitch counts and stuff. AJ, 100%, I saw this guy. Maybe...
- 27:11Speaker 5: One of the top three most prepared relievers, because I
- 27:14Speaker 5: guess you weren't necessarily closing when I was there with you,
- 27:17Speaker 5: but most prepared, but also most thought out. You would
- 27:22Speaker 5: talk about pitching for somebody that only pitched an inning.
- 27:26Speaker 5: You probably talked about pitching more than majority of the
- 27:29Speaker 5: bullpen guys that I ever played with.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair. I mean, I was like confident, but
- 27:35Speaker 3: paranoid at the same time. I did not want to
- 27:38Speaker 3: walk into a first pitch ambush. I wanted to find
- 27:41Speaker 3: a way to steal strikes. I wanted to find a
- 27:42Speaker 3: way to be convicted. So that was my whole thing.
- 27:45Speaker 3: And I remember arguing with some analysts over the years, like, hey, yes,
- 27:48Speaker 3: I know this pitch sucks by the metrics, but it's
- 27:52Speaker 3: still valuable because it's keeping me away from them seeing
- 27:55Speaker 3: my best stuff. So if I can throw it in
- 27:57Speaker 3: a take situation or get ahead with this thing, well,
- 28:00Speaker 3: now all of a sudden they're really up against it.
- 28:01Speaker 3: They haven't seen my sinker three times or my slider.
- 28:04Speaker 3: So I've been fighting this fight for a long time.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Seems like people are starting to come around with bigger
- 28:08Speaker 3: arsenals and that sort of thing. But Obviously, you have
- 28:10Speaker 3: to command them, and that's part two of the issue.
- 28:14Speaker 2: See, that's next level.
- 28:15Speaker 6: Otto, that's like the reliever that won't stop throwing. You
- 28:18Speaker 6: know he's nervous. When you get a reliever that's a
- 28:20Speaker 6: veteran guy and he throws like 10 pitches and he's
- 28:22Speaker 6: just standing there, you're like, that guy, he's ready and confident.
- 28:25Speaker 6: When you look in their head and you see the
- 28:27Speaker 6: guy that won't stop throwing, you're like, oh, gosh, when
- 28:30Speaker 6: we bring him in, please, please let him.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Be okay today. Yeah, you're right.
- 28:37Speaker 3: I mean, the best, that's why the best bullpen coaches
- 28:39Speaker 3: will go stand in front of the guy. Like, Hey,
- 28:41Speaker 3: just that you've thrown enough, man.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Like relax. Like you gotta, you gotta do it in
- 28:44Speaker 4: the game.
- 28:45Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Give me the ball.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Well, we appreciate you again, extended time. Hopefully we'll have
- 28:50Speaker 1: you on for some post-season action too, on the FT network,
- 28:52Speaker 1: busy band NBC.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Yes. Network too.
- 28:54Speaker 1: You got a double dose of auto today with the
- 28:57Speaker 1: double header, with the Yanks and the race. So appreciate you, man.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Really good catching up with you.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Thanks guys. Don't Michael.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:03Speaker 6: I didn't steal his water. Tell Michael K I didn't
- 29:05Speaker 6: steal a Snapple, okay? Pass that along.
- 29:08Speaker 2: You will like that. You will like that. See you, Adam.
- 29:11Speaker 4: All right. See you, guys.
- 29:14Speaker 1: All right, so that's what he said, talking about Paul
- 29:17Speaker 1: Skeen's calling out what happened in the WBC and how
- 29:20Speaker 1: that could affect velocity.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Baseball fans, time to lock in, okay? Lorraine Co.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Remineralizing pouches are nicotine-free. They're made with powerful nootropics to
- 29:29Speaker 1: keep you mentally sharp, even while you are losing your
- 29:32Speaker 1: voice as you're talking. but they do support your teeth.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Go to Ilarayne.com. Use code FT10 at checkout for temperature
- 29:38Speaker 1: and off. See, I was able to power through with
- 29:40Speaker 1: Raidco having a pouch in. I actually got rid of
- 29:43Speaker 1: the voice going away. So coming up next, Julian McWilliams,
- 29:47Speaker 1: fascinating article on the state of modern hitting.
