- 0:15Speaker 1: they're not playing. Yeah, I'm Ron Brigandy. Rest Anyway, Tune
- 0:19Speaker 1: in tonight to watch Curtis and Spencer Jones take on
- 0:24Speaker 1: the Philadelphia seventy six ers. Pregame for Nugget Sixers on
- 0:27Speaker 1: ninety two to five will start at six o'clock, powered
- 0:30Speaker 1: by Ramos Law. All right, Jeff Leke, Well, let's start
- 0:32Speaker 1: in the big picture here on a Monday afternoon, the
- 0:36Speaker 1: Broncos are fourteen and three, the number one seed in
- 0:39Speaker 1: the AFC. They will go from from the Nathaniel Hacket
- 0:44Speaker 1: Christmas Day debacle against the Rams, where they're they're fighting
- 0:48Speaker 1: each other, they're fighting the Rams, they're losing by a thousand,
- 0:52Speaker 1: they're getting their coach fired, and three years later they
- 0:56Speaker 1: are the number one seed heading into the postse And
- 1:00Speaker 1: as you have watched this build and let's start in
- 1:03Speaker 1: the biggest picture possible, what has stood out to you
- 1:07Speaker 1: the most about how George and Sean Payton have gotten
- 1:10Speaker 1: the Broncos here.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Bob asked people around the league about that too, who
- 1:15Speaker 2: know both of them, And just from what I've seen
- 1:19Speaker 2: over the years here and there of watching teams build,
- 1:27Speaker 2: it strikes me how they found a sort of the
- 1:31Speaker 2: common ground to work off of that. George Peyton has
- 1:34Speaker 2: a very good understanding of what kind of player Sean
- 1:39Speaker 2: Payton is looking for. And Sean Payton, you know, look
- 1:43Speaker 2: tons of people around the league. You know, Sean Payton
- 1:47Speaker 2: is a forceful personality. You know, like him, dislike him
- 1:52Speaker 2: in the middle ground if you've met him or haven't
- 1:54Speaker 2: met him, whatever. He has a strong personality, but he
- 1:59Speaker 2: knows as well what kind of player he's looking for.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And you can dispute any of that or you know,
- 2:07Speaker 2: argue some of the the you know, the little things
- 2:10Speaker 2: in there, but he has a very clear idea of
- 2:14Speaker 2: what he wants. And you can build a roster if
- 2:18Speaker 2: if the people looking for players know what you want,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and you are effective in getting those guys in roles
- 2:26Speaker 2: once you have them, and you know, I think you
- 2:31Speaker 2: know a big part of their developmental curve is the
- 2:34Speaker 2: assistant coaches they have. I think they have a good
- 2:37Speaker 2: developmental staff and just look at you know, like like
- 2:42Speaker 2: Vance Joseph for example, on defense, Look where Nick Benito
- 2:45Speaker 2: was two years ago, Look where he is now. You know,
- 2:48Speaker 2: look where Zach Allen was when he arrived. Look where
- 2:51Speaker 2: he is now. You know, you hit on certain who
- 2:55Speaker 2: was here when Sean Payton got here. But look at
- 2:59Speaker 2: how all of those people fit together with a clear
- 3:03Speaker 2: plan of how they want to play.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and it is absolutely fit. And the Broncos have
- 3:08Speaker 1: gotten to this place where they play Jeff a brand
- 3:12Speaker 1: of complimentary football that may make the locals a bit
- 3:16Speaker 1: restless at times. There sure was a lot of punting
- 3:20Speaker 1: happening in that game yesterday, But the point of the
- 3:24Speaker 1: exercise of professional sports is score more points than the
- 3:27Speaker 1: other guy, right, And that's what I think the Broncos do,
- 3:31Speaker 1: almost better than anything else. With that said, we have
- 3:37Speaker 1: two full regular seasons of sample size on what this
- 3:42Speaker 1: offense is in Sean Payton's mind from where it started
- 3:48Speaker 1: with the drafting of bon Nicks and the planting of
- 3:51Speaker 1: the Seeds a couple of years ago, and McGlinchey and
- 3:53Speaker 1: Powers and starting to construct this whole thing. Do you
- 3:57Speaker 1: believe that Sean figured his offense would be further along
- 4:02Speaker 1: by now.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I do you know if he were to admit it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: You know, I can't speak for him, but I have
- 4:10Speaker 2: spoken to him about football matters a few times, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: I it's hard for me to believe Nate that this season.
- 4:20Speaker 2: In August, I could have walked up to Sean Payton
- 4:24Speaker 2: and said, if you end the year and bow Knicks
- 4:28Speaker 2: leads the NFL and pass attempts, have you played offense
- 4:32Speaker 2: the way you want to? I don't believe the answer
- 4:35Speaker 2: would have been yes, you know in my heart. But
- 4:39Speaker 2: here we are, and bow Knicks led the NFL in
- 4:43Speaker 2: pass attempts, and you know, in a league when only
- 4:48Speaker 2: two quarterbacks finished with more than six hundred, he is
- 4:52Speaker 2: one of them. And you go to the other side
- 4:56Speaker 2: of it, he's twenty ninth and off target throws and
- 5:00Speaker 2: I think twenty first in completion percentage. So you're doing
- 5:04Speaker 2: something more than every other quarterback in the league. And
- 5:10Speaker 2: you either aren't built at wide out or tight end
- 5:13Speaker 2: to be efficient enough doing it to be in the
- 5:16Speaker 2: league's top fifteen even but you're still doing it more
- 5:20Speaker 2: than everyone else. And that's the question I don't really
- 5:24Speaker 2: have a good answer to. And I've looked at it,
- 5:26Speaker 2: and I've charted it, and I've asked people, and I'm
- 5:30Speaker 2: not sure anyone does. I think they're they just go
- 5:33Speaker 2: week to week, you know, during the season and trying
- 5:36Speaker 2: to get by attack the opponent. I think these big
- 5:40Speaker 2: picture things get addressed later, you know, when they're when
- 5:44Speaker 2: you can step back and look at it. But don't.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I don't think the offense is worried. I think they
- 5:50Speaker 2: they'd like more in the middle of the field, whether
- 5:53Speaker 2: that's a tight end or a running back, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I don't know, but they want more there. They need
- 5:58Speaker 2: more explosives. I mean JK. Dobbins hasn't played since November sixth,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and he still has seven more explosive runs than any
- 6:09Speaker 2: running back on the Broncos roster. You know, there are
- 6:13Speaker 2: definite things they need more of for him to have
- 6:16Speaker 2: the offense he had for a lot of years, and
- 6:20Speaker 2: that he'd like.
- 6:20Speaker 1: I think that is Jeff Legwald. Everybody breaking it down
- 6:24Speaker 1: with us on a Monday afternoon. Jeff Legwald brought to
- 6:26Speaker 1: you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW Local
- 6:29Speaker 1: sixty eight. You start with a job, you end with
- 6:32Speaker 1: a career. Jeff, let's get into some of the news
- 6:35Speaker 1: of the day. It's Black Monday. Coaches are getting canned
- 6:38Speaker 1: all over the place, as they typically do. We have
- 6:42Speaker 1: seen reports that Vance Joseph is going to get an
- 6:45Speaker 1: interview with the Tennessee Titans. We have seen other reports
- 6:49Speaker 1: of Davis Webb, Jim Leonard garnering interest around the NFL.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Right now, when it comes to Sean Payton's coaching staff,
- 6:58Speaker 1: typically a number one seed is going to generate some interest.
- 7:02Speaker 1: What do we know how many phone calls are Broncos
- 7:05Speaker 1: assistants going to get right now?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Well, I mean Sean Payton is always contended. Ah, it's
- 7:11Speaker 2: a good sign when people want your coaches, and that
- 7:14Speaker 2: if people don't want your coaches, you're not doing much,
- 7:19Speaker 2: you know. So I think he takes this as just
- 7:21Speaker 2: part of the part of the deal.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Uh.
- 7:25Speaker 2: And I know he expects it, and he you know,
- 7:27Speaker 2: he will have spoken to all of his assistants who
- 7:31Speaker 2: get interest you know, about this many times. H And
- 7:36Speaker 2: I think I think the assistants here believe in what
- 7:42Speaker 2: they see around them enough, they're not just gonna this
- 7:45Speaker 2: isn't gonna be like a lot of staffs where people
- 7:48Speaker 2: are just gonna go for a promotion.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:50Speaker 2: They they know what this is going to look like here.
- 7:54Speaker 2: They know what kind of ownership is here, they know
- 7:57Speaker 2: what kind of investment is going to be in the
- 8:00Speaker 2: in the team.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And they're not all just going to leave here just
- 8:04Speaker 2: you know, I believe Davis Web wants to call plays
- 8:09Speaker 2: at some point that is very unlikely to happen here.
- 8:14Speaker 2: You know, he could be given more responsibilities here and
- 8:17Speaker 2: more game plan you know, all of those things, but
- 8:20Speaker 2: I don't think on game day he will have game
- 8:25Speaker 2: you know, those play calling experiences, So he may have
- 8:28Speaker 2: to go for that. But guys aren't going to just
- 8:31Speaker 2: jump to jump from here. So it will take quality
- 8:35Speaker 2: offers from these these teams to get these guys. And
- 8:39Speaker 2: you know, I know VJ wants to be a head
- 8:40Speaker 2: coach again, but he also knows how he wants it
- 8:44Speaker 2: to look when he wants to be a head coach again,
- 8:46Speaker 2: And I think he'll ask a lot tougher questions of
- 8:49Speaker 2: the teams interviewing him because he knows where he's at
- 8:53Speaker 2: and he knows what he has.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Like you look at at the openings, is this a
- 8:56Speaker 1: good cycle for VJ? Do you think he has a
- 8:59Speaker 1: good crack one of these gigs.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I do, you know, I certainly think you know spy tech.
- 9:04Speaker 2: There's a Broncos connection there, you know, the the you
- 9:10Speaker 2: know teams know VJ. He is a known in league circles.
- 9:15Speaker 2: You know. I think sometimes it gets lost here because
- 9:18Speaker 2: it didn't go well as a head coach here for him.
- 9:22Speaker 2: But an awful lot of people who make an awful
- 9:24Speaker 2: lot of decisions in the league think a lot of
- 9:27Speaker 2: the way he develops players, how he handles players, And
- 9:32Speaker 2: I think his schematic stuff is underrated locally that football
- 9:38Speaker 2: people see a pretty good tactician in those things. So yeah,
- 9:43Speaker 2: I think he's got a good opportunity to get interviews.
- 9:47Speaker 2: And you know, I think it's very telling. The Titans
- 9:51Speaker 2: were first to call and they you know, they have
- 9:54Speaker 2: a former chiefs executive running the show there, so he
- 9:59Speaker 2: seemed what VJ does up close. So again, but I
- 10:04Speaker 2: think VJ will ask good questions, tough questions to the
- 10:08Speaker 2: people talking to him to make sure, but he'll get
- 10:12Speaker 2: tons of interest. And I think it won't shock me
- 10:16Speaker 2: at all if a few of these other teams ask
- 10:18Speaker 2: for formal positions or permission. It is weird to me
- 10:22Speaker 2: that in this cycle. I don't remember this many gms
- 10:28Speaker 2: being retained while the head coaches are getting dumped. And
- 10:32Speaker 2: I've always sort of half teased and half been serious
- 10:36Speaker 2: with coaches that you know, when you're coaching the game,
- 10:40Speaker 2: the other guy's in the owner's box talking about I
- 10:43Speaker 2: can't believe we've used that guy that way. I can't
- 10:46Speaker 2: believe we did that. What's up with that time out?
- 10:49Speaker 2: And I think sometimes we see the impact of that,
- 10:52Speaker 2: and I think we're really seeing the impact of it today.
- 10:56Speaker 1: I think it pays to be the guy that can
- 10:57Speaker 1: hit happy hour with the owner.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you got an extra four hours with the
- 11:03Speaker 2: owner every game day where you know the other guy's
- 11:06Speaker 2: busy right too, and stuff. You know, you're up in
- 11:09Speaker 2: the box just commenting on commenting. But you know, anyway,
- 11:14Speaker 2: that's neither here nor there. But it is weird that
- 11:17Speaker 2: And I would ask that if I was a head
- 11:19Speaker 2: coach interviewing at these spots, you know, what's your situation?
- 11:23Speaker 2: You know what you know? Are you want thin ice
- 11:26Speaker 2: to mean? What's happening here? You know we could the
- 11:29Speaker 2: team only afford to fire one of you. I want
- 11:34Speaker 2: to know what's happening before I you know, dive all
- 11:36Speaker 2: the way in.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah, get that peek out of the hood. He's Jeff
- 11:39Speaker 1: Legwall and everybody. We talked to him Mondays and Fridays
- 11:42Speaker 1: here on the Craig of The Lindall Show. Read his
- 11:44Speaker 1: stuff at espn dot com Best in the Biz, Leggy,
- 11:46Speaker 1: good stuff man. Thank you.
- 11:48Speaker 2: They
