- 4:31we took a bit of a break from recording. You can still find us
- 4:34both at at Boydnica on the D and D podcast, but we took a
- 4:41break from book Watchers because I, like I said, like we were just
- 4:45talking about I started a new job, and you can see Devin over there
- 4:49is still very salty about it. Uh, And that was basically my whole
- 4:55life for the past two and a half weeks. It's been more than that,
- 4:58like three and a half weeks now, and things are settling down.
- 5:01We find I finally had the time to end energy, to sit down and
- 5:05so we can record and hopefully we'll be recording more regularly again and get things
- 5:13back on track. And while we were taking a break, a little miss
- 5:18sunshine over here, Miss little miss Sunshine, I mean that in the most
- 5:28annoying way possible. Uh was it was? It was being a busy little
- 5:32bee doing the most and managed to get us sponsorship. But before we talk
- 5:42about that sponsorship, housekeeper take it away, tipping here, So I'm not
- 5:50good at housekeeping. It'd be looking at the description ball alone, you'll see
- 5:56a link that will take it to a link tree of Theonoid productions that will

- 7:03But yeah, we get money, we get we get paid. We're getting
- 7:15hey, but that would help us a lot. And it's also a free
- 7:24book. So let me tell you. I've been using Audible forever and this
- 7:27is not even sponsored because I use them on the daily. Literally all these
- 7:30episodes that I've been doing of all because I'm Audible, because my dilexic but
- 7:34likes to listen to audiobooks and read along with them. So that's what I've
- 7:38been doing. And I decided, you know what, let's see if you
- 7:42can get Audible. And we got Audible and I got lost my mind when
- 7:47I got it, Oh my god. So yes, that'll be in a
- 7:54description below us well with the link tree going in today's episode. The next
- 7:59couple of week are going to be shorter episodes because these books are going to
- 8:03be much smaller than I'm going to be doing. We're still waiting on somebody
- 8:09to finish the Wheel of Time. No rush, really, no rush.
- 8:16A little update. So, yes, a little update on the Wheel of
- 8:20Time. Uh so were we least? We left off on book nine?
- 8:24And since then, it's been like what two months since we fit we last
- 8:28recorded, we last recorded, the last we recorded for book nine. Yeah,
- 8:33in that time, I've been busy. I finally read the last five
- 8:37books. I'm on book fourteen right now, like I literally just started.
- 8:41I'm only on the prologue. You think about the Will of Time? The
- 8:43prolong is the prologue is long? Like I sort of got. I thought
- 8:48I was already like midway, like a good chunk of the way into these
- 8:52books. And then it just like turned the page chapter one, and like
- 8:54this was only the prologue. The fuck, Robert Jordan, Oh my god,
- 9:00rest in peace, my guy. But you told an entire story like
- 9:03it wasn't even a recap. It was like an entire new story and just
- 9:07the prolog alone. I mean, Brian Brandon Sanderson is he wrote the last
- 9:15three he wrote the last three novels because unfortunately Robert uh Robert Jordan passed away
- 9:20before he could finish his novels. And I'm not gonna lie. You can
- 9:26tell because is that in a bad way or No, it's not a bad
- 9:33way, because like Brandon Sanderson did a good job of writing these characters the
- 9:37same way that Robert Jordan did. He kept to their personality, kept their
- 9:43personalities intact. But you can tell that there's like, it seems like the
- 9:48notes that Robert Jordan left behind were very like they were detailed, so there
- 9:54was enough information for Brian Sanderson to like close out the story for us.
- 9:58But it seems I get the feeling that there was supposed to be more like
- 10:03if it was Robert Jordan writing this, I'm pretty sure it would have extended
- 10:05far past fourteen books. But now it's like it's clear that Brandon Sanderson was
- 10:13trying to just close out the series, yes, instead of like this journey
- 10:20because it like Robert Jordan's writing style is almost like a journey. He's taking
- 10:22you on a journey of this story. But Brandon Sanderson want is getting to
- 10:28the point, is now just getting to the point, which isn't a bad
- 10:31thing like it condensed. He's condensed a lot of like the remaining story down,
- 10:37So I'm pretty sure Robert Jordan had originally intended for tom ra Guide into
- 10:41last like multiple books, but now it's been condensed into just one. Book
- 10:46fourteen is the entire final battle. But there was a honestly, there was
- 10:52a great build up for tom er Guiding because like after book nine and in
- 11:00book ten and on, like book ten was like a recap, but it
- 11:03was from the perspective of the characters that we didn't see at all book and
- 11:05book nine, and they there was just like the dark Ones presence. His
- 11:16influence on the world is growing. He's caught. Even though they fix the
- 11:18weather now like crops are dying quicker, the harvest spoils. Rather even if
- 11:28they preserve it, like do take all the steps to preserve it as best
- 11:31they can, it spoils very quickly. So now there's famine. They have
- 11:35to deal with famine, and trolicks are starting to are used. They're using
- 11:41the ways to invade other cut to the other nations, and there was just
- 11:46a bunch of other things and it's leading up into it's it's leading us up
- 11:50into the final into the final battle. I'm not gonna spoil too much other
- 11:58than this last book is going to be a it's gonna be a rough ride.
- 12:03It's gonna be a roller coaster. There's a lot of the there's gonna
- 12:07be a lot of like just there's gonna be a lot of death, a
- 12:11lot of battle. It's gonna be just pure carnage everywhere. And some of
- 12:18our some of our characters will not will not survive. Like I kind of
- 12:26spoiled it for myself, but I already know several characters from the main from
- 12:31the main group is gonna die. I'm not gonna tell you who, pretty
- 12:37sure. I'm pretty sure there are gonna be other characters that will die too
- 12:45well. I can't wait till you talk about them. Last five books,
- 12:50which will be relatively soon ish ish, probably four or five episodes most likely
- 13:01till then about not a month, maybe more and a half. So I
- 13:07was thinking for the final five books because book nine and ten are basically the
- 13:18same story, yeah, except told from different perspectives. Eleven and twelve and
- 13:24thirteen okay, uh no, no, No, eleven had more progression.
- 13:30Twelve and thirteen. Uh, we're pretty much like nine and ten. They
- 13:37happened at the same time, but like we're just seeing, we're like twelve
- 13:43had certain big events, thirteen had other big events, but they happened at
- 13:46the same time that were separate. Are you're thinking about combining, like combining
- 13:50episodes two with four of the books nine and ten and twelve and thirteen eleven,
- 13:54and I was gonna do ten and eleven, twelve and thirteen and then
- 13:58fourteen will just be its own, because that's going to be a lot that's
- 14:01going to be just Yeah, we had journey, the ending to the saga,
- 14:11but today we are continuing on through books that I have read over the
- 14:18course of Jacob reading the Wheel of Time series. So a book where I'm
- 14:24going to be talking about today is called Dark Harvest, and it's written by
- 14:28Norman heart Riach. I'm terrible at names, y'all sorry. Norman is born
- 14:39in is a Californian author. He usually normally writes horror and mystery fiction.
- 14:48He was born on May twenty, nineteen fifty eight. I'm trying to see
- 14:54if there's any well known works of his that people would know outside of the
- 14:58Dark Harvest. I mean, he did a novel for the Crow for that
- 15:03franchise, if anyone knows that's serious. He did the Crow Wicked Prayer.
- 15:11Outside of Yeah, he did outside of that, I don't. I think
- 15:16he did like a bunch of short story stuff and yeah he's yeah, he's
- 15:22only hit written like a handful of novels one six and then he did like
- 15:28two books and for like a mystery series. And I don't know if he's
- 15:31written anything since twenty twenty ten. Maybe was the last thing he read or
- 15:39last thing he wrote. So it's been a little bit since he released a
- 15:43book. But this one we're talking about, Dark Harvest, was released back
- 15:48in two thousand and six. Uh. This is a short horror novel,
- 15:54obviously, because it's made so right. This book is set in the Midwest
- 16:03in an unnamed town Midwestern town where each year, all of the young men
- 16:11of said town take part in a yearly ritual in which they hunt a giant
- 16:18pumpkin headed creature that appears from the corn. It's known as the October Boy
- 16:27or sawtoothed Jack. Yeah. Wait, is this what Pumpkinhead was based off
- 16:36of? No? No, because Pumpkinhead came out before Dark Harvest because Pumpkinhead
- 16:41was the eighties. Yeah, Dark Harvest is two thousand and six. They
- 16:45made a movie on Dark Harvest as of recently back in sorry last year in
- 16:51twenty twenty three to release a movie for Dark Harvest. But I don't This
- 16:56might have been inspired by a Pumpkinhead for all I know, because I mean,
- 17:00we haven't seen Pumpkinhead do so it's a fun movie. I'm surprised I
- 17:06haven't talked about and Spook yet. That's my list ahead. Yes, so
- 17:12I have the first one somewhere, and I think my boyfriend has, like
- 17:17the second. Second one is apparently hard to find. Sure, I'm pretty
- 17:22sure Johnny has all of them. Oh, I'm sure much because he's the
- 17:26one that told me about Pumpkinhead first time. But basically, these young men
- 17:30gather in a town in their center of their Midwestern town as they conduct this
- 17:36ritual where this pumpkin headed creature comes from the corn and they have to basically
- 17:44catch him before he reaches the church in the town before midnight, because if
- 17:55it reaches the church by midnight, they've lost, which could be castrophic for
- 17:59the time. Town girls are forbidden from entering in this hunt as well,
- 18:07which is weird. The winner of the hunt receives the ability to leave the
- 18:14town, something not otherwise possible because most people that are stuck are there are
- 18:21stuck there. They're not allowed to leave the town, so they're living there
- 18:23their whole lives. And the one person that wins gets to leave, gets
- 18:30to go wherever they want. And the main character, oh sorry, and
- 18:38the person who wins his family gets is given a new car, a new
- 18:44home, and a year free of bills. Winners are, of course,
- 18:52in this town, winners are frequently idolized. And then they mentioned one winner
- 18:57from the year previous year before, Jim Shepherd, and of course he's currently
- 19:03underlay its because he's the last one from the year before, so unbeknownst to
- 19:07the patrons. Now, this is gonna be a very loose summary, because
- 19:11let me tell you, it's been a while since I've read this book,
- 19:14and it's very short. It's less than two hundred pages, so I'm not
- 19:17gonna go over every single little detail, but I'm just going over the big
- 19:21broad strokes of it. So, uh, the participants do not know the
- 19:25truth of the ritual, and of course, like most things. It's far
- 19:30darker than then they really realize. So while the winners family does receive their
- 19:41prizes, now, I mean it kind of shows that's kind of show this.
- 19:49Wow, they really show they really showed the plot early. It's early.
- 19:56I don't know if I'm want he uses hold up. I just think
- 20:00you can find more detailed. I'm to do something. I'm to do some
- 20:03editing on this one because I don't know if I want to use that,
- 20:10because they really go over the spoiler like raight off the bat, and I
- 20:11don't know if I want to do that upped up up book. Keyes.
- 20:18No, I can't use that. You're already that's okay, you're cutting this
- 20:22out. I'm cutting this out, yeah, because I mean, I can't
- 20:26talk about it, but I don't want to throw out the spoiler this quick.
- 20:33Yeah, someone had to talk about the review that being plot the book
- 20:41I'm on Now? Is this an audible original type book or is it like
- 20:48a no it's an actual novel, independent author. It's an actual Yeah,
- 20:52it's an actual novel. Have they written back at that? This guy written
- 20:56back in two thousand and six, So okay, So describe the scene to
- 21:03me like what what do you what do you think you can't talk about?
- 21:06Is it like, like is it hard? No? I mean it's no,
- 21:10it's not like it's bad. But the spoiler, the twists of the
- 21:15thing, you don't find out to the very end of the book, and
- 21:18they're already talking about it in the summary that I'm not going off of.
- 21:22They talked about it like in the beginning. I'm like, oh, whoa,
- 21:25whoa, whoa, whoa wo No, that is too soon, babes,
- 21:33Like, no, I don't want to go over all that this quick.
- 21:36If I have the bullshit, all bullshit, but like, I don't
- 21:41want to grow up. I'm sorry because this one was bro that should that
- 21:55brought back memories? Oh god, I don't want to grow up? What
- 21:59twizz are kid? Yeah, it's a shame. Amazon random out of business.
- 22:07So now my sister was buying from them a lot when my kid,
- 22:11when my neighblings were young. Yeah, but now it's just like that.
- 22:23The book and Halloween nineteen sixty Okay, cool. So we're dealing with a
- 22:40Midwest town cool ritual October boy blah blah blah. So the story is following
- 22:48a boy named Pete Mick McCormick. And he his goal, of course,
- 22:56he's coming of age to be able to enter the inter in the in the
- 23:00hunt or the ritual or whatever. And his goal was to kill the October
- 23:03Boy because or not kill him, but catch him whatever, because he wants
- 23:07to be able, he wants to leave, he's done here. He's like,
- 23:11I need to escape this. Yeah, so I need to escape this
- 23:15dead horse town. And it's a he's willing to risk course everything to do
- 23:26it so the ritual can can Well, it happens, obviously, and they
- 23:34start going on. The participants start gathering around the town and they start hunting
- 23:41down in this October Boy, and you're and throughout the whole book you're kind
- 23:44of just like, is there brilliantly a pumpkin headed monster or something, or
- 23:48is this like some metaphor where they're, oh, I'm not going to actually
- 23:52kill the guy, kill the thing or take the thing down. Maybe it's
- 23:55a person learning a pumpkin hit. It's just like a costume metaphorical. Turns
- 24:00out, no, it's not. You do actually see that there's a creature
- 24:06coming out of the pumpkin of the corn. It's literally a living creature that
- 24:12has a head like a pumpkin, like a jack o lantern, and you're
- 24:17just like what. And the story is basically about Pete going around trying to
- 24:22either catch the October Boy and then finding out what's really going on, as
- 24:27like he comes across bullies and other people that try to either kill him,
- 24:32kill each other or whatever to get the October Boy because it's the one hope
- 24:37for freedom. But the sad part is, is there really is it really
- 24:45freedom? Or is that trap? Bump bump bum? They got a trap?
- 24:55Yeah, it's a trap. So Pete of course is answer vivors.
- 25:03Let me see if there is a bastards, I think I need to purchase
- 25:07that or just what sound on discord? Oh my god? And a trap?
- 25:15So I do I'm now curious, keep going from listening. So with
- 25:23that, Pete eventually does discover the secret of what's happening. Now, this
- 25:33secret kind of it comes to maybe about three or fourth the way of the
- 25:37book, as he's trying to get the October Boy and he's already had a
- 25:41couple of run ins with some young men who are psychos who try to kill
- 25:45them and each other to get to the thing because it's there one. It's
- 25:48one grace of freedom and able to help their families and free month, free
- 25:56year of bills, no bills and shit. But you can kind of tell
- 25:59that something is afoot because the people, the family, the previous family,
- 26:04are very distraught and kind of just like you can tell something's wrong, something's
- 26:10not right, And Pete starts catching on and he does find out about what
- 26:15really happens. So the ritual, of course is the winner of it.
- 26:22The winner's family receive all these prizes, right, But the boy who wins
- 26:27leaves and no one sees him leave. But the thing is he doesn't actually
- 26:33leave. They kill him. The winning boy is killed so they may become
- 26:41the creature for next year. So the October Boy, right, that's I
- 26:47was like, no, So the October Boy is the boy who won the
- 26:51previous year, and he sacrifice basically got sacrificed, and he's going to get
- 26:56sacrificed, and the thing continues and the following year he's of course then reincarnated
- 27:04as a as the monster with the pumpkinhead. The character's father, Pete and
- 27:11uh Jim's father Dance forced to carve a face for the creature before the pumpkin
- 27:18for the the event, so his father is forced to carve his son's face
- 27:23the pumpkin. That's kind of fucked. And then later, of course,
- 27:29the creature is pursued. Didn't get it, didn't nesturally get caught. He
- 27:33almost got caught a couple of times. But if it does happen to make
- 27:37it to the church by midnight May, the town's fathers are aware of the
- 27:41truth of the ritual and allow their sons to take part, so everyone so
- 27:45the fathers know about the secret, and it's a lot of like we gotta
- 27:51keep that, we gotta keep the tradition going because it kind of keeps the
- 27:55They kind of give you a they kind of give you like a little tidbit
- 27:57that the ritual has something to do with the crops as well. So they
- 28:00don't do the ritual, it fucks up the town and they're kind of all
- 28:03fucking screwed if they don't do it. So who was it? Like South
- 28:15Park did a fucking skit on this exact on a story just like this,
- 28:18And I think Children in the Corn was just like this too, like,
- 28:22oh, we need to sacrifice because I'm pretty sure if I remember correctly,
- 28:26that it deals with the crops and stability of the town the summer. I'm
- 28:34looking at us and talk about that, but I'm pretty sure that's part that's
- 28:37partially why they had to keep that intact, because obviously, when people find
- 28:42out that they're trying to stop that, Pete ends up. Pete and his
- 28:45friends end up turning on the ritual and try to stop it or save the
- 28:49October Boy or whatever people try to get in get in their way to stop
- 28:55them from interfering with the ritual itself. Ultimately, the Altober Boy does manage
- 29:04to get to the church and with help of the several local teens, and
- 29:11he finds out that the October Boy finds out his father unlied himself in the
- 29:22church, and he also comes face to face with the Lawnman, who's a
- 29:30lawman of the town and who also has had a couple of run ins with
- 29:34the characters throughout the story anyway, because he shot some people. He's one
- 29:41of the people that are trying to keep the ritual happening and trying to make
- 29:45sure someone catches the October Boy, like someone has to catch him if he
- 29:49makes it to the church. We're all fucked and of course he makes it
- 29:52to the church and Jerry is his name, Verry Ricks and a Ricks attempts
- 30:02for the kill of the October Boy, but then he is shot and killed.
- 30:08While all that is happening, and it's just the October Boy, the
- 30:12main characters Pete and his friends and Rick who they just killed. The churches
- 30:18in surround and surrounding buildings are then set ablaze by the October Boy and he's
- 30:26fling the town people. So he's the October Boy is setting everything on fire
- 30:30as he's running through the town as they're trying to catch him, and it's
- 30:37great because from what I remember of it, he's just like, you know
- 30:44what, fuck this shit, fuck y'all. And he starts chasing the people
- 30:49as they they're fleeing from the October Boy, and he sent everything ablaze and
- 30:53the town kind of just burns to the ground and now they can. Of
- 30:56course, when the town burns to the ground, people can actually leave now
- 31:02because they are also because they were not allowed to leave before due to some
- 31:07unforeseen circumstances because of the virtual and sacrifice and all that shit. So the
- 31:12October Boy basically burns everything to the ground. I think he ends up dying
- 31:15at the end, obviously, because you can't live a normal life after that.
- 31:21And it kind of just ends abruptly where the town where the people can
- 31:26now leave the town, I mean, because everything's burnt to the ground.
- 31:34That's at much the Outdoor Boy. I mean, the story is not very
- 31:37detailed. I'm not very I shouldn't say detailed. It is, but like
- 31:40not very It's not very jam packed with plot. The plot's pretty simple.
- 31:47You only get like maybe a day before the actual hunt, and then the
- 31:52hunt, and then the book ends when it's after obviously after midnight, and
- 31:57the hunt is done, and everything's burning to the ground because the October Boy
- 32:01said on fire because he's Jim Shepherd, the previous boy he was killed,
- 32:07and he's pissed that he was lied to, and all the teenagers were also
- 32:14lied to him, and the only people that knew were the fathers or the
- 32:17men of the town knew, and of course I think the I think Shepherd's
- 32:25family knew as well, obviously, because they you can kind of tell when
- 32:32they describe the family and the book that they're very distraught about it, and
- 32:37they're kind of just like emotionally emotional damage, emotional damage exactly. Now,
- 32:51this book was released as a movie back in October eleventh, twenty twenty three,
- 32:59from Him, which is owned by Amazon, which I did not know
- 33:05that, but apparently they are, which is another company like Audible that is
- 33:10owned by Amazon. Oh the fun facts of it all. And I have
- 33:22not seen the movie yet, so I don't know if they've kept I probably
- 33:25should have watched the movie. Of course, I didn't know originally if we
- 33:29were going to do this book, but you know, I'll watch the movie
- 33:31eventually. But the movie is out there. It's on digital now. Of
- 33:37course, it was on digital like two days after it came out in theaters.
