- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:23Speaker 1: have a guest join us coming to us from the ranger.
- 0:26Speaker 1: He covers the NFL over there. His name is Deontay Lee.
- 0:29Speaker 1: First time guest. What's going on, brother?
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm doing well, man. It's been a while. I've been
- 0:33Speaker 2: hoping that I would get this call eventually. Glad to
- 0:36Speaker 2: be on with you. You might not know this. I
- 0:38Speaker 2: have been in the Beaumontian realm for a little while.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I was a longtime Evening Jones watcher, used to talk
- 0:45Speaker 2: music several iterations of my social media ago that does
- 0:49Speaker 2: not exist anymore. So I'm glad to finally be on
- 0:52Speaker 2: and be able to talk some sports with you.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Don, I appreciate it. Good to have you. For folks
- 0:55Speaker 1: that don't know, I told you Deontay covers the NFL
- 0:57Speaker 1: for the Ringer. He also coaches high school football out
- 1:01Speaker 1: there in California. So you're an authority figure.
- 1:04Speaker 2: That's what they like to call me at my job.
- 1:06Speaker 2: I would say on Fridays, it doesn't feel so much
- 1:08Speaker 2: that way all the time. We're usually just riding with
- 1:12Speaker 2: whatever these teenagers decide to do on a day-to-day basis.
- 1:16Speaker 1: I always talk about this with college football, that I
- 1:19Speaker 1: just can't imagine... my livelihood, depending on the actions of
- 1:24Speaker 1: the worst decision makers on earth. I had never really
- 1:28Speaker 1: given a lot of thought to like whittling that down
- 1:30Speaker 1: to high school. Now, high school, perhaps there are worse
- 1:33Speaker 1: decision makers, but they have fewer decisions. So it kind
- 1:35Speaker 1: of balances itself out, but it's still the same principle.
- 1:39Speaker 2: 1000% the same principle. And I would say the difficulty
- 1:42Speaker 2: isn't just the kids. It's the dynamic between the kids
- 1:44Speaker 2: and the adults.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And what I mean is you have these guys who
- 1:47Speaker 2: are former college players, might have had a cup of
- 1:49Speaker 2: coffee in the NFL. They've got big ideas of what
- 1:52Speaker 2: they want to get accomplished. And they're losing their mind
- 1:54Speaker 2: on the sideline about what's not happening on Friday nights.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And I have to bring everybody together and remind them
- 1:59Speaker 2: that 15 year old before they got to practice today
- 2:03Speaker 2: was probably catching mono, sharing drinks with their classmates. You know,
- 2:08Speaker 2: so you kind of have to temper your expectations in
- 2:10Speaker 2: that respect. I try to be relatively chill. People tell
- 2:14Speaker 2: me that I'm not always that way. But you spend
- 2:16Speaker 2: enough time in coaching, man, you realize all you can
- 2:19Speaker 2: do is draw this stuff up. It's out of your
- 2:20Speaker 2: hands very quickly in this profession.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Well, the thing I feel like, too, that people lose
- 2:24Speaker 1: sight of with every level you go down in football,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and I think people lose sight of this in the NFL,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and we'll talk about some of this in the show,
- 2:30Speaker 1: is I really think that we underestimate the difficulty of
- 2:34Speaker 1: of throwing 10 pounds of air wrapped in leather down
- 2:38Speaker 1: the field with any measure of precision while also out
- 2:42Speaker 1: here trying to do rocket science with whatever the play
- 2:44Speaker 1: is like i just the reason they didn't throw the
- 2:47Speaker 1: ball that much back in the day is not just
- 2:49Speaker 1: simply these people weren't that smart it was a full-on
- 2:51Speaker 1: understanding man that shit is hard dog they had to
- 2:54Speaker 1: think about how many rules they've had to change to
- 2:56Speaker 1: make it such that you can actually throw the ball.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Listen, I was watching Brian Thomas Jr. a couple weeks
- 3:00Speaker 2: ago when people were talking about him having the yips,
- 3:02Speaker 2: not wanting to catch the ball over the middle of
- 3:04Speaker 2: the field. And I kind of had to take a
- 3:06Speaker 2: beat before I started criticizing him and think, if I
- 3:08Speaker 2: knew that there was a safety coming from the opposite
- 3:10Speaker 2: side that I could not see, and the ball is
- 3:13Speaker 2: such that I have to jump and reach outside my frame,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I would probably take a beat to wonder how much
- 3:19Speaker 2: this completion is worth it.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, me neither. No, that's the whole going over the
- 3:24Speaker 1: middle things. We've talked about this on the show that
- 3:26Speaker 1: the game has changed to the point where there are
- 3:29Speaker 1: no guys like Michael Irvin, where Michael Irvin's claim to
- 3:32Speaker 1: fame was I will go into the danger zone and
- 3:35Speaker 1: I will take whatever comes. Like that's not part of
- 3:38Speaker 1: the game anymore because there also are not safeties who
- 3:40Speaker 1: purely exist outside. to destroy people, right? 1,000%. The 12th
- 3:46Speaker 1: man on the field is the boogeyman. It's just the
- 3:48Speaker 1: fear that you have going over the middle. But that's
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Ricky Waters for who, for what. When you look back,
- 3:55Speaker 1: by the way, at that play and at the score
- 3:58Speaker 1: at the time that Ricky Waters short-armed that ball, he
- 4:01Speaker 1: had the right idea. You can't do that your first
- 4:03Speaker 1: game in Philadelphia. You can't say it out loud in
- 4:06Speaker 1: front of people. But he really was kind of right in,
- 4:10Speaker 1: for what reason would I do this? Exactly.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I want to play football for a much longer time
- 4:14Speaker 2: than just this week. I didn't come in here with
- 4:17Speaker 2: the idea that any one catch would be worth it
- 4:20Speaker 2: for the entirety of my career. You want me to
- 4:22Speaker 2: play on third down and the next down after that, right?
- 4:25Speaker 2: Give me a chance to figure out what's worth it
- 4:27Speaker 2: and what's not. So I'm not mad at it at all.
- 4:29Speaker 1: That play might have kept Ricky Waters out of the
- 4:31Speaker 1: Hall of Fame because I think he is a borderline case.
- 4:33Speaker 1: He has a Super Bowl ring. But the defining moment
- 4:36Speaker 1: of his career is for who? He said it so confidently.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Why would I do this? Right, right. That's an expectation
- 4:46Speaker 2: over here. Why would you ask me to do this thing?
- 4:48Speaker 2: You don't know who I am. That's one of those.
- 4:50Speaker 2: You must not be familiar with who I am as
- 4:53Speaker 2: a person.
- 4:53Speaker 1: He thought that this.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Is what I was going to do.
- 4:55Speaker 1: They're like, this costs a lot of money. Right? Like
- 4:57Speaker 1: you don't do that with the expensive things. You do
- 5:00Speaker 1: that with the other things. But you mentioned Brian Thomas Jr.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And I had this thought about the NFL right now.
- 5:06Speaker 1: On Monday night, Jamar Chase looked incredibly frustrated and I
- 5:12Speaker 1: think it's like, to me, it's a little bit endearing
- 5:14Speaker 1: considering the fact that like your starting quarterback isn't out there,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but you still think that you should be getting the
- 5:19Speaker 1: ball like you a dog in a sense, right? I
- 5:23Speaker 1: think there's something to be said for that. But I
- 5:25Speaker 1: also feel like, and I'm curious if you've noticed this,
- 5:28Speaker 1: I was reading some of your NFL power rankings on
- 5:32Speaker 1: Oranga before we got started here, but this feels like
- 5:37Speaker 1: we are returning to the old days of receivers. Now,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you're a little bit younger than me, I believe, but.
- 5:44Speaker 2: The.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Disgruntled receiver was an archetype of the NFL that honestly,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I feel like in the last however many years, like
- 5:53Speaker 1: you had like an Odell Beckham who was a character
- 5:55Speaker 1: of a receiver of sorts, but you never had him
- 5:57Speaker 1: really just that mad because he wasn't getting the ball.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Back when passing the ball was a little bit more difficult.
- 6:04Speaker 1: We had a lot, and I feel like we saw
- 6:06Speaker 1: all of our favorite receivers or every good receiver, even
- 6:09Speaker 1: Jerry Rice, have the give me the damn ball. I mean,
- 6:11Speaker 1: Keyshawn Johnson had a whole book call give me the
- 6:14Speaker 1: damn ball the dudes is coming back in part because
- 6:17Speaker 1: we're now approaching that part of the year where we're
- 6:20Speaker 1: figuring out who's bad and we're seeing quarterback injuries but
- 6:23Speaker 1: we saw AJ Brown getting salty you mentioned that Michael
- 6:28Speaker 1: Pinnock's in Atlanta thank goodness is now throwing the ball
- 6:30Speaker 1: to open people because Drake London was going to be
- 6:33Speaker 1: reaching that place I was thinking about Brian Thomas because
- 6:35Speaker 1: he down there playing with Trevor Lawrence who ain't even
- 6:37Speaker 1: necessarily that good But it feels like, and you tell
- 6:41Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong here, we got a lot of
- 6:43Speaker 1: receivers that's in jail right now. Justin Jefferson in jail
- 6:46Speaker 1: a little bit right now.
- 6:48Speaker 3: 100%.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I mean, and just speaking to that archetype, it's not
- 6:50Speaker 2: just those guys you mentioned, right? You had the Ben
- 6:53Speaker 2: Johnson press conference yesterday. where he was talking about guys
- 6:56Speaker 2: having to play hard even when they don't get the ball,
- 6:58Speaker 2: and everybody's immediate inference was DJ Moore, you start pulling
- 7:01Speaker 2: up clips, and it's like, that actually does look like
- 7:03Speaker 2: a guy who's not that interested in playing football if
- 7:05Speaker 2: he's not touching the ball, right? You think about Marvin
- 7:08Speaker 2: Harrison Jr. on just this past Thursday night, where it
- 7:11Speaker 2: looks like he's disconnected until he starts getting a couple catches,
- 7:14Speaker 2: and then he looks like a different football player. I
- 7:16Speaker 2: think that The rarity that you spoke to is exactly
- 7:19Speaker 2: the truth, because if it wasn't so rare, we wouldn't
- 7:21Speaker 2: have had as big a reaction in the receiver special
- 7:24Speaker 2: on Netflix when Devontae Adams is on the sideline like,
- 7:27Speaker 2: I will never play with this Jimmy Garoppolo guy again.
- 7:29Speaker 2: He's going to get me killed. Oh, I did not
- 7:32Speaker 2: see that.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 7:33Speaker 2: He had like a whole meltdown on the sideline. I
- 7:37Speaker 2: forget what game it was in. I think he had
- 7:39Speaker 2: the press conference after the fact, because that might have
- 7:40Speaker 2: been after Antonio Pierce got fired. where it was like, yeah,
- 7:42Speaker 2: we got to make some changes around here. But he's
- 7:45Speaker 2: on the sideline talking about, dude, Jimmy trying to get
- 7:47Speaker 2: me killed. I'm going to lose my life over the
- 7:48Speaker 2: middle of the field here. I got to get away
- 7:50Speaker 2: from this stuff.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Oh, not the hospital balls. Like, imagine. I am glad
- 7:55Speaker 1: that Devontae Adams has wound up somewhere that's okay for him, right?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Because he went from playing with Aaron Rodgers. And look,
- 8:03Speaker 1: Derek Carr, starting caliber NFL quarterback, on top of being
- 8:07Speaker 1: his mans, right? But he was a capable starting quarterback.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And then he got what was left of Jimmy Garoppolo.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I cannot imagine what it was like for him to
- 8:19Speaker 1: go to work every day. And now you're telling me
- 8:23Speaker 1: that he was like, no more hospital balls. No more
- 8:25Speaker 1: hospital balls for me.
- 8:27Speaker 2: You want to talk about some Eddie Murphy trading places,
- 8:29Speaker 2: penthouse to project. You know, you go from Aaron Rodgers
- 8:33Speaker 2: feeding you touches all throughout the game to Jimmy Garoppolo
- 8:37Speaker 2: basically looking at you and saying, hey, if I say
- 8:39Speaker 2: you're open, that's where I'm throwing the ball. You just
- 8:41Speaker 2: have to deal with whatever safety or whatever linebacker is
- 8:43Speaker 2: coming your way. I wouldn't want to make that type
- 8:46Speaker 2: of change in my life either.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Malik neighbors, by the way, now he's hurt. He tore
- 8:50Speaker 1: his ACL, but you know, he was down bad and
- 8:52Speaker 1: it wasn't going to get no better for him. Cause
- 8:54Speaker 1: I did not, I did not come out from what
- 8:56Speaker 1: I saw from that Jackson dart game, feeling like they
- 8:58Speaker 1: found the solution. Right. I just think they feel better
- 9:00Speaker 1: about what form of mediocrity they're going to wind up
- 9:04Speaker 1: existing in. You mentioned DJ more. It was somebody else
- 9:06Speaker 1: that I was looking at that. I was like, damn
- 9:08Speaker 1: homie in jail. Dak Prescott, on the other hand is
- 9:11Speaker 1: out here freeing cats. He out here breaking people out
- 9:14Speaker 1: of jail. Those dudes he throwing the ball to should
- 9:17Speaker 1: be inmates.
- 9:20Speaker 2: That and I mean, you see George Pickens and all
- 9:22Speaker 2: of a sudden you're on your best behavior, right? When
- 9:24Speaker 2: it's not Russell Wilson just laying the ball out there.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I got somebody I can trust now.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Nothing is more predictable than the season that George Pickens
- 9:34Speaker 1: is going to have. Nothing is more predictable. variant than
- 9:39Speaker 1: the season that George Pickens will have next year after
- 9:42Speaker 1: he gets something like $ 60 million guaranteed.
- 9:47Speaker 2: 100% worst case scenario. This dude's going to end up
- 9:48Speaker 2: with like 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns and he's going
- 9:50Speaker 2: to go into Jerry's office and be like, wide receiver one, baby.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Trade it for.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Me, right?
- 9:55Speaker 2: I'm on an expiring contract. What you going to do
- 9:57Speaker 2: to keep me, buddy?
- 9:58Speaker 1: No, Jerry's going to give him that money because look,
- 10:00Speaker 1: the idea that you could have him and CeeDee Lamb,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and if Dak performs, you know, we'll see how it
- 10:07Speaker 1: goes down the line, but Dak's been really good this year.
- 10:09Speaker 1: But if you've got the two of them, or perhaps
- 10:11Speaker 1: most importantly, you have George Pickens in a sense where
- 10:14Speaker 1: it's good to have him, but you don't have to
- 10:15Speaker 1: depend on him. That might be best case scenario.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Don't disagree. You also have to have that meeting with
- 10:24Speaker 2: your coaching staff where you say, you've got to get
- 10:26Speaker 2: George Pickens to practice every day once he's earning $ 20
- 10:29Speaker 2: to $ 25 million. Best of luck to you, buddy.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Look, if he doesn't practice every day, I'm not even
- 10:36Speaker 1: really tripping on that because he doesn't seem to need
- 10:38Speaker 1: that much, right? My problem, again, is... When George Pickens
- 10:44Speaker 1: forgets what we're doing right now, whatever right now and
- 10:49Speaker 1: what we're doing happened to me. He doesn't always remember
- 10:53Speaker 1: like the, the interception. And now you're still messing with
- 10:57Speaker 1: the dude that was covering you as opposed to the
- 11:00Speaker 1: guy that made the interception.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I would say even worse, you get those moments of
- 11:04Speaker 2: George Pickens where he decides that what the other 21
- 11:07Speaker 2: people on the field are doing really doesn't apply to
- 11:09Speaker 2: him at all. I might be thinking about some water
- 11:11Speaker 2: right now. You know what? I needed a couple snaps
- 11:15Speaker 2: off three plays ago. I think I'm going to go
- 11:17Speaker 2: ahead and take that now. I'm going to heal on
- 11:20Speaker 2: company time, as Shaq would say. You've got to worry
- 11:23Speaker 2: about that. And if you embolden him with a payday,
- 11:25Speaker 2: I can't imagine that that kind of behavior gets any better.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Hey, man, let me tell you a little subtle thing
- 11:30Speaker 1: that I don't know how many people think about, but
- 11:33Speaker 1: I don't follow college sports and recruiting as much as
- 11:37Speaker 1: I used to. One thing that you can tell a
- 11:41Speaker 1: lot about is not just who does offer somebody, it's
- 11:46Speaker 1: who doesn't offer somebody. It used to be like this.
- 11:52Speaker 1: If there was a great player in the state of Texas,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and for whatever reason, Oklahoma offered him, but Texas did not.
- 12:00Speaker 1: There was a story there. 100%. Right? There was an explanation,
- 12:05Speaker 1: but Oklahoma historically would have to take players that Texas
- 12:08Speaker 1: did not, right?
- 12:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:10Speaker 1: George Pickens is from Hoover, Alabama. That's the school that
- 12:14Speaker 1: was on that show, okay? Nick Saban did not offer him.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And that's at an era where he could have used
- 12:22Speaker 2: the George Pickens, right? That's when they were loading up
- 12:25Speaker 2: on wide receivers.
- 12:27Speaker 1: There's a story there. I don't know what exactly that
- 12:31Speaker 1: story is, but the fact that George Pickens was a
- 12:34Speaker 1: second-round pick.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:37Speaker 1: What was the intel of this incredibly talented motherfucker when
- 12:41Speaker 1: it was like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, I don't know.
- 12:45Speaker 2: You've talked about this in my backyard of Southern California, right?
- 12:49Speaker 2: I think about the Pete Carroll era, and you're talking
- 12:51Speaker 2: about a head coach that would go to the PJs
- 12:53Speaker 2: and Watts to go get a kid if that's what
- 12:55Speaker 2: it took. So if you are from anywhere from Los
- 12:58Speaker 2: Angeles County to San Diego County and USC ain't calling,
- 13:01Speaker 2: that's probably a message that there are some things that
- 13:03Speaker 2: come with you that just ain't worth bringing on campus.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Right. Why did Vontaze Perfect have to go to Arizona State,
- 13:09Speaker 1: you may be wondering?
- 13:10Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 13:11Speaker 1: There's a reason. By the way, we discovered this on
- 13:14Speaker 1: the show the other day. Did you know he's coaching
- 13:16Speaker 1: at UNLV?
- 13:17Speaker 2: I did see that. I saw that about a week
- 13:18Speaker 2: or so ago, and I thought, God, I can't imagine
- 13:21Speaker 2: what he's like in a meeting room. I would hate
- 13:23Speaker 2: to miss an assignment with Vontaze Burfeet as.
- 13:25Speaker 1: My position coach. He could be a great coach. Like,
- 13:27Speaker 1: he could be a coach like my homeboy that used
- 13:29Speaker 1: to steal, then got a job in loss prevention. And
- 13:32Speaker 1: he was a beast. Like, what was that? The DiCaprio movies,
- 13:36Speaker 1: Catch Me If You Can? The one where he's the
- 13:38Speaker 1: cop man and then he becomes the feds?
- 13:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:41Speaker 1: That's Vontaze Burfeet.
- 13:42Speaker 3: 100%.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I've had some coaches like that too, right? You get
- 13:46Speaker 2: your little bounce back, might have gone to a D1 school,
- 13:49Speaker 2: didn't last very long, and they come back on the whole,
- 13:51Speaker 2: I can play better than you, but I can tell
- 13:53Speaker 2: you all the things not to do so you don't
- 13:54Speaker 2: end up like me. I can imagine for Vontaze Burfecht,
- 13:57Speaker 2: he can pull up a whole reel of number 54
- 13:59Speaker 2: in Cincinnati alone. You see that guy and everything he
- 14:03Speaker 2: does after the whistle is what you don't do. And
- 14:05Speaker 2: that's probably the best coaching he has to offer. Yes.
- 14:08Speaker 1: By the way, as we talk about receivers who are
- 14:09Speaker 1: in jail, can I offer you a very interesting case
- 14:12Speaker 1: of one? Who's in jail?
- 14:14Speaker 2: Who's that?
- 14:15Speaker 1: I don't know how closely you've looked at Chris Olave's numbers,
- 14:18Speaker 1: but I saw it this morning. Okay, guys, they are
- 14:22Speaker 1: throwing the ball to Chris Olave a lot because the
- 14:24Speaker 1: Saints are terrible. And so they're behind all the time.
- 14:29Speaker 1: So they have to throw the ball all the time.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Chris Alave has 26 catches for 185 yards. He is
- 14:37Speaker 1: averaging seven yards reception. I have never seen anything like
- 14:40Speaker 1: this before in my life. They don't have a single
- 14:42Speaker 1: receiver who is averaging 10 yards of reception.
- 14:45Speaker 2: That's nasty football. That is nasty football. That's what you
- 14:49Speaker 2: would expect from like Brian Westbrook back in the mid
- 14:52Speaker 2: 2000s as a receiving running back. You never want to
- 14:54Speaker 2: be a receiver with them kind of averages because for
- 14:57Speaker 2: all them catches, that means 26 times getting tackled probably
- 15:00Speaker 2: by guys like Much, much bigger than you.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yo, somebody going to break some shit down there. And
- 15:05Speaker 1: I also think it is worth noting. Look, Spencer Rattler,
- 15:08Speaker 1: this is impossible. Spencer Rattler is completing 67% of his
- 15:12Speaker 1: passes and averaging 5.2 yards in attempt. Again, never seen
- 15:16Speaker 1: anything quite like this, which tells me they missed on
- 15:20Speaker 1: their second round pick with Tyler Shuck, who's like 47
- 15:23Speaker 1: years old. They missed because there's no way that if
- 15:26Speaker 1: he's not playing, they missed.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I mean, they made Rattler the starter pretty, like, definite, right?
- 15:32Speaker 2: Definitely he's the starter. This is not a competition. This
- 15:36Speaker 2: guy is the guy. And he's putting up Ben Roethlisberger
- 15:38Speaker 2: at the end of his career numbers right now. So
- 15:40Speaker 2: that tells you a lot about what Tyler Shuck might
- 15:42Speaker 2: have looked like if you would have thrown him out
- 15:44Speaker 2: on the field. And I think that that's been a
- 15:45Speaker 2: story for a lot of these young quarterbacks, even with
- 15:47Speaker 2: Jackson Dart, right? You look at these guys and some
- 15:50Speaker 2: of the plays they do and don't make, and you say,
- 15:53Speaker 2: if you could sit for maybe two years, that might
- 15:55Speaker 2: actually be what's in your best interest if you want
- 15:57Speaker 2: to make it work in the league.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yeah, man. I'll switch gears a little bit. I wondered
- 16:03Speaker 1: watching the Ravens game, because I ain't going to lie,
- 16:05Speaker 1: I turned it off before they took LeVar Jackson out,
- 16:07Speaker 1: so I didn't realize that we were discussing whatever the
- 16:09Speaker 1: injury was. But he looked hurt early in that game. Like,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I don't know how much to take from that game.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I do know that their defense look a lot like
- 16:18Speaker 1: the Make-A-Wish Foundation that's lining up down there in Dallas. Like,
- 16:23Speaker 1: where does this go from here with this team? So
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'm just... Operating on the assumption that Lamar Jackson is
- 16:29Speaker 1: not seriously hurt.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Right. We would have heard about that, right? He would
- 16:32Speaker 2: have definitely probably been listed out if the hamstring was
- 16:35Speaker 2: going to hamper him for weeks beyond maybe what we
- 16:38Speaker 2: saw in Kansas City and what might be to come
- 16:40Speaker 2: next week. I do think it's tricky with Baltimore because
- 16:45Speaker 2: you're talking about John Harbaugh now. And if there's one
- 16:47Speaker 2: thing that we've seen with John Harbaugh, it's that he's
- 16:50Speaker 2: not going to move on from guys if they're a problem.
- 16:53Speaker 2: You look at who they got at right guard. Daniel
- 16:54Speaker 2: Follelet was an interesting prospect coming out. Six foot eight
- 16:58Speaker 2: was heavily oversized coming into the league has kind of
- 17:02Speaker 2: worked himself into shape and bless him for it. but
- 17:05Speaker 2: you turn on clips and you should never see an
- 17:07Speaker 2: offensive lineman facing the quarterback. And there are a lot
- 17:09Speaker 2: of clips looking at Lamar Jackson, trying to work through
- 17:13Speaker 2: his progression and they haven't moved on for him in
- 17:15Speaker 2: spite of him being a liability over the years. And
- 17:18Speaker 2: then that doesn't even touch on the defense. And I
- 17:21Speaker 2: think a really thorny situation when you promote a guy
- 17:24Speaker 2: who is a Raven through and through had his career
- 17:27Speaker 2: ended by injury with the Ravens and Zach or, and
- 17:30Speaker 2: it's clearly struggling to try to find his identity as
- 17:32Speaker 2: a defensive coordinator and And if I know anything about
- 17:35Speaker 2: John Harbaugh is that he's not in a rush to
- 17:37Speaker 2: let go of that guy. And I keep watching this
- 17:39Speaker 2: film and it keeps looking like the common denominator here
- 17:42Speaker 2: is that the defensive play caller does not have it
- 17:44Speaker 2: right now.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Here's what I think the Ravens have going for them.
- 17:50Speaker 1: They have a game against the Rams in two weeks
- 17:54Speaker 1: on October 12th. Outside of that. they might be favored
- 18:00Speaker 1: in every game they play until December. Like their schedule
- 18:05Speaker 1: looks soft. Texans, Rams. Now they got the Rams at
- 18:10Speaker 1: home though, but it's Texans, Rams, Bears at home. Dolphins, Vikings,
- 18:14Speaker 1: Browns on the road. Jets, Bengals, Steelers at home, at
- 18:19Speaker 1: the Bengals, home for the Patriots, at the Packers, at
- 18:22Speaker 1: the Steelers. Until this gets late, They've got some cake opponents. Like,
- 18:27Speaker 1: they should be able to get their wins up, if
- 18:30Speaker 1: nothing else.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I mean, they'll probably be, by definition, that 12-5 team
- 18:34Speaker 2: that you know ain't that good, right? Because they'll probably
- 18:36Speaker 2: go 6-0 in division if they handle their business. They'll
- 18:39Speaker 2: probably split some of these games against the NFC North teams,
- 18:43Speaker 2: and they'll look good coming down the stretch, but based
- 18:45Speaker 2: on the way that this defense goes, and maybe this
- 18:47Speaker 2: doesn't hold every year, but usually if a defense starts
- 18:50Speaker 2: off poorly, they probably end the season poorly. That's a talent-based...
- 18:54Speaker 2: type of side of the ball, you don't usually find
- 18:56Speaker 2: yourself midway through and turn into an elite unit. They
- 19:00Speaker 2: clearly have some talent problems. They've got guys hurt, a
- 19:03Speaker 2: bunch of guys on IR, and we don't even know
- 19:05Speaker 2: what the status of some of those guys will be
- 19:06Speaker 2: coming back. And a lot of those guys look like
- 19:08Speaker 2: they're losing steps outside of Kyle Hamilton. So I have
- 19:12Speaker 2: some big time concerns about what it's actually going to
- 19:14Speaker 2: look like. And that means more conversations about who Lamar
- 19:17Speaker 2: Jackson is and isn't as a quarterback, even if he
- 19:20Speaker 2: ends up not being the driving force for why this
- 19:22Speaker 2: team disappoints again by uh january and.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So that's interesting to me because i and i am
- 19:30Speaker 1: not i'm not a scientific observer of this right like
- 19:33Speaker 1: there are people who know more than i do um
- 19:36Speaker 1: but he seems to me at this point to be
- 19:38Speaker 1: a legitimately excellent passer his hold up is that i
- 19:41Speaker 1: always look like he playing darts you know what i
- 19:43Speaker 1: mean like it doesn't like i always say i say
- 19:45Speaker 1: john elway is the ultimate eye test quarterback and i
- 19:49Speaker 1: had people push back on me online and they would
- 19:51Speaker 1: talk about well aaron rogers i'm like if aaron rogers
- 19:53Speaker 1: don't look like that and they're like well he's an
- 19:56Speaker 1: inch shorter and da da da yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 19:58Speaker 1: yeah i hear you that's one of the best throwing
- 20:00Speaker 1: arms i've ever seen but when you look at john
- 20:02Speaker 1: elway throw the ball we're not even there's no question
- 20:05Speaker 1: who's the starter on this team Right. Like there's never
- 20:07Speaker 1: any place like the line was his first time he
- 20:10Speaker 1: played football. His dad was late to the game. His
- 20:12Speaker 1: dad got there and asked, so what is it? They
- 20:14Speaker 1: said either your kids, the best, the best ever or
- 20:16Speaker 1: all the rest of the worst.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Right.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson does not look like that when he throws
- 20:21Speaker 1: the ball. And I always wonder how much of that
- 20:24Speaker 1: affects like the way that we view him as a passer.
- 20:26Speaker 1: But the only thing that seems to be the issue
- 20:28Speaker 1: to me is he and the entire team get tight
- 20:31Speaker 1: at the in a certain type of scenario. It's not
- 20:35Speaker 1: all of them. But some of them, they get tight.
- 20:38Speaker 2: I mean, I had a little back and forth with
- 20:40Speaker 2: Nick Wright on social media about that, right? And I
- 20:43Speaker 2: understand it. And I would say that as the years
- 20:46Speaker 2: have gone on, I would say specifically after that AFC
- 20:48Speaker 2: championship game against the Chiefs a couple years ago, when
- 20:51Speaker 2: it was clear, like, they were the better team, the
- 20:54Speaker 2: more talented team, had the better season coming in. And
- 20:57Speaker 2: the second that they saw those red helmets step off
- 21:00Speaker 2: the bus, everything changed in that locker room. They were emotional.
- 21:03Speaker 2: They were undisciplined. They've had turnover problems. I think that
- 21:06Speaker 2: that also has kind of been emblematic of Lamar Jackson's
- 21:08Speaker 2: career in the postseason. So nobody's arguing the other side
- 21:12Speaker 2: of that now. I do wonder why that is. And
- 21:15Speaker 2: maybe this comes down from the top. I don't think
- 21:18Speaker 2: we see John Harbaugh as being an undisciplined, overly emotional guy.
- 21:23Speaker 2: But for whatever reason, outside of 2012, basically, every time
- 21:27Speaker 2: his team has been in his biggest moments, they have
- 21:29Speaker 2: totally come apart at the seams. It doesn't matter who
- 21:32Speaker 2: the coordinator is, the quarterback, how they're playing defense. They
- 21:35Speaker 2: have always shown up as the worst versions of themselves
- 21:38Speaker 2: in big games. And you've talked about this in the
- 21:41Speaker 2: NBA since with James Harden and some of the guys
- 21:43Speaker 2: who have struggled to get over that hill. It's hard
- 21:46Speaker 2: to quantify where you're at mentally when you land in
- 21:49Speaker 2: those moments against somebody that you know is just as good,
- 21:52Speaker 2: if not better than you. And it makes you wilt, right?
- 21:55Speaker 2: It makes you go into a shell. I don't know
- 21:56Speaker 2: how you fix that.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I mean, and the thing that got him last year
- 21:59Speaker 1: against Buffalo, obviously, is that Lamar made the plays. And
- 22:03Speaker 1: it was Mark Andrews.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Who, you know. Gave the booty away, as you would say.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he gave up the booty, but like, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 1: it used to be a thing we used to say
- 22:13Speaker 1: before gambling was legal that it looked like in these moments.
- 22:16Speaker 1: But now those feel like stronger accusations and I feel
- 22:18Speaker 1: like I have to remove that phrasing from my discussion.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But it's the blown fourth quarters. It's just over and
- 22:26Speaker 1: over again with it. And with Harbaugh, you're right. 2012,
- 22:29Speaker 1: they managed to make it happen. Don't forget 2011. drop
- 22:33Speaker 1: touchdown pass, miss field goal.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Like right at the end.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Like all these things run together, and it feels almost
- 22:39Speaker 1: like that division has been owned by John Harbaugh and
- 22:43Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin, two guys that all of us think are
- 22:45Speaker 1: very good coaches and will consistently give you a chance
- 22:48Speaker 1: to win, but not that much.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Right. Right. And that's I think that's the thing that
- 22:54Speaker 2: trips me up because I look at the guy who
- 22:56Speaker 2: owns John Harbaugh in this era being Andy Reid. And
- 22:59Speaker 2: I'm an Eagles fan. I remember what the conversation was
- 23:01Speaker 2: like with that guy before he got to Kansas City.
- 23:04Speaker 2: So it just it holds me up every time. So
- 23:06Speaker 2: I'm like, if that guy can get over the hump
- 23:08Speaker 2: and maybe it is just as simple as you get
- 23:10Speaker 2: the greatest quarterback who's ever walked the earth. And everything
- 23:13Speaker 2: looks better. You know, that might be the problem. But
- 23:15Speaker 2: I look at John Harbaugh and I'm like, why can't
- 23:17Speaker 2: we get over this hump? You guys have all pros
- 23:20Speaker 2: up and down this roster. And I continue to see
- 23:22Speaker 2: you fumbling the game away, throwing interceptions, playing conservatively when
- 23:26Speaker 2: you don't have to, and missing out on these opportunities
- 23:29Speaker 2: to take these highly talented teams and get them where
- 23:32Speaker 2: they're supposed to be.

- 25:03Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Deontay Lee. Sam Darnold,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Daniel Jones, you believe in that shit?
- 25:11Speaker 2: Sam Darnold more than Daniel Jones? I don't know what
- 25:13Speaker 2: that says about Daniel Jones. I honestly don't know what
- 25:15Speaker 2: that says about Sam Darnold either, if I'm being honest.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Do you have a hard time in these moments detecting
- 25:20Speaker 1: if you're being fair? Because I have a hard time
- 25:22Speaker 1: in these moments detecting if I'm being fair.
- 25:23Speaker 2: 100%, especially with the guy like Daniel Jones. The last
- 25:28Speaker 2: time we saw Daniel Jones- He was told to go
- 25:31Speaker 2: home mid-shift. We didn't even have to get to the
- 25:35Speaker 2: end of the season before New York said, actually, buddy,
- 25:39Speaker 2: whatever you have planned for your winter, you go on
- 25:41Speaker 2: and get to it. You want to go skiing? Hit
- 25:43Speaker 2: the Alps. We don't need you. Hand over your key
- 25:47Speaker 2: card now. So that's the guy I think I'm most
- 25:49Speaker 2: held up by. I do think, and focusing on him specifically,
- 25:53Speaker 2: and maybe there's a bigger conversation to have, the fact
- 25:55Speaker 2: that he looks this competent right now in Indianapolis, in
- 25:58Speaker 2: spite of the fact that Not a single bit of
- 26:00Speaker 2: the Colts roster has changed around him. What does that
- 26:03Speaker 2: say about Brian Dable in New York? And more importantly,
- 26:07Speaker 2: what does that say about Anthony Richardson?
- 26:10Speaker 1: So, you know, I'm holding out on Richardson. Like I still,
- 26:13Speaker 1: and I feel like I'm holding out on him in
- 26:14Speaker 1: part because of the examples of guys like Daniel Jones
- 26:17Speaker 1: and Sam Darnold or in Baker Mayfield, who I do
- 26:20Speaker 1: want to get to at some point, because I think
- 26:21Speaker 1: he's a bit of a tricky case, but the development
- 26:25Speaker 1: arc of a quarterback is much longer than then it
- 26:28Speaker 1: is typically given credit for being in the nature of
- 26:31Speaker 1: the salary structure in the NFL. It now requires teams
- 26:34Speaker 1: to make these decisions about quarterbacks in year three. basically,
- 26:38Speaker 1: which appears to be too early. Now, I felt like
- 26:41Speaker 1: after they put Richardson on punishment last year, that he
- 26:44Speaker 1: came back and looked better, and that there was a
- 26:46Speaker 1: possibility that this year, who knows? I can't say that
- 26:49Speaker 1: Richardson couldn't have looked like that this year in this offense,
- 26:52Speaker 1: because I saw Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones play last year,
- 26:56Speaker 1: and I think Anthony Richardson was better.
- 26:57Speaker 2: Was a better player, yeah.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Right, so how can I say that? And I guarantee you,
- 27:01Speaker 1: there's somebody who is saying exactly what I'm saying right
- 27:04Speaker 1: now for anybody to listen, and that is Anthony Richardson,
- 27:08Speaker 1: I assure you that he is making it known. I
- 27:12Speaker 1: could do that. And you're like, well, why didn't you
- 27:15Speaker 1: do it last year? And he's like, why didn't he
- 27:17Speaker 1: do it last year?
- 27:19Speaker 2: I'm sure at practice, they're going through the exact same
- 27:21Speaker 2: route tree as they're warming up. And he's looking at
- 27:23Speaker 2: Daniel Jones make these throws. And he's got to be
- 27:25Speaker 2: looking at his offensive coordinator like, really? That dude? You
- 27:29Speaker 2: telling me that that dude is the guy that you
- 27:31Speaker 2: put me on the bench for? Are you positive that
- 27:34Speaker 2: that's what you want to do? And then on the
- 27:35Speaker 2: other hand, that offensive coordinator could pull up film and say, hey, man,
- 27:40Speaker 2: this is a three-yard completion. Why is somebody pulling a
- 27:43Speaker 2: tooth out their mouth in the third row?
- 27:47Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:47Speaker 2: I don't know how to square these two things because
- 27:49Speaker 2: they're both true. They're both true. And I don't know
- 27:52Speaker 2: which one deserves more weight in this scenario. I think
- 27:56Speaker 2: that for Richardson, maybe he just needs a change of scenery.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I do think not to be morbid about it. I
- 28:01Speaker 2: also think the fact that there was a change in
- 28:03Speaker 2: ownership basically over the offseason might have changed some things
- 28:07Speaker 2: with their timeline. Because it seems like the newest Ursae,
- 28:10Speaker 2: daughter Ursae, is a lot more involved. And I think
- 28:13Speaker 2: that maybe coming in the door, she said, one thing
- 28:15Speaker 2: I ain't going to do is watch a guy complete 40%
- 28:17Speaker 2: of his passes. We can't live like that. I can't
- 28:21Speaker 2: tell you that Daniel Jones is going to give us
- 28:22Speaker 2: a better chance to win. But I know that for
- 28:24Speaker 2: my own well-being and mental health, I cannot watch a
- 28:27Speaker 2: quarterback throw the ball into the sideline every time he's
- 28:29Speaker 2: trying to check it down.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you this, and I forget which of
- 28:32Speaker 1: these trees Steichen's off of, but it seems to me
- 28:36Speaker 1: that if you're going to make it work with Richardson,
- 28:38Speaker 1: you need something Shanahan McVay-y, which is to say we
- 28:41Speaker 1: throw it far.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Like we do these things because, I mean, you put
- 28:47Speaker 1: Richardson in like a stretch run game. That's an underrated
- 28:51Speaker 1: thing that people don't get is that a quarterback that
- 28:53Speaker 1: can move can then stretch out what's possible on the
- 28:56Speaker 1: stretch play. It's why people were excited about the idea
- 28:58Speaker 1: of Malik Willis coming into the league in spite of
- 29:01Speaker 1: some of his physical limitations is watch what happens on
- 29:03Speaker 1: the stretch, right?
- 29:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:05Speaker 1: I feel like there's a place where it could get done,
- 29:07Speaker 1: but you're right. If you can't trust the dude to
- 29:09Speaker 1: just get the little nickels and dimes when they out there,
- 29:11Speaker 1: that's got to be incredibly frustrating when you're in charge.
- 29:14Speaker 2: How do you call plays? How do you call plays
- 29:16Speaker 2: with that in mind? That if there's a guy wide open,
- 29:18Speaker 2: five yards away from the quarterback, that you can't count
- 29:21Speaker 2: on the fact that he can put it on the
- 29:23Speaker 2: guy's chest. That's a difficult thing to call plays around.
- 29:26Speaker 2: But I do agree with you. And I think that
- 29:28Speaker 2: maybe this situation has just kind of gone rotten. It
- 29:31Speaker 2: doesn't necessarily seem like The Colts are totally out on
- 29:34Speaker 2: him as a human, right? I think they were frustrated
- 29:36Speaker 2: after his first two years not being able to stay healthy.
- 29:39Speaker 2: yeah gas stations you know part of the music videos
- 29:43Speaker 2: in Indianapolis people are people a little worried about where
- 29:45Speaker 2: your head is at you might not be in the
- 29:46Speaker 2: film room the way that they need you to be
- 29:48Speaker 2: but since then it seems like not only to your
- 29:51Speaker 2: point has he played better it seems like he's been
- 29:53Speaker 2: more invested in trying to be a better version of
- 29:55Speaker 2: himself as a quarterback it just might be too late
- 29:58Speaker 2: and like you said these timelines the trajectory that's expected
- 30:01Speaker 2: on quarterbacks, it's unfair for a guy like Richardson, especially
- 30:05Speaker 2: when you're picked fourth overall. But I think that maybe
- 30:08Speaker 2: that toothpaste is just out of the tube. I do
- 30:10Speaker 2: think if he is ever on the market as an
- 30:13Speaker 2: Eagles fan, I got to look and say, man, look,
- 30:17Speaker 2: if I don't want my starting quarterback doing all that
- 30:18Speaker 2: tush push, all the design quarterback run stuff. And just
- 30:22Speaker 2: in case he gets dinged up, I can get somebody
- 30:24Speaker 2: who can hand the ball off, run some play actions
- 30:26Speaker 2: and give the ball to A.J. Brown. I can't imagine
- 30:29Speaker 2: a much better option than that.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. At some point, and I
- 30:33Speaker 1: don't know exactly when that point is, somebody going to
- 30:35Speaker 1: cash in on Trey Lance. He's right now getting remade
- 30:41Speaker 1: in that Harbaugh image. Let me tell you this. Everybody
- 30:45Speaker 1: needs to be afraid. They buy low on Trey Lance
- 30:47Speaker 1: and then somehow Harbaugh got a spot for Anthony Richardson
- 30:50Speaker 1: to just come in there. And learn a little something.
- 30:52Speaker 2: That's a great call.
- 30:53Speaker 1: That's a great call. Watch what I saw what Harbaugh
- 30:56Speaker 1: did with Colin Kaepernick. I see what Harbaugh done with
- 30:59Speaker 1: just about everybody you gave Harbaugh.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 2: I mean, and for me, I think that with Richardson,
- 31:07Speaker 2: the scheme that you laid out is exactly what he needs.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I think that he also needs a legitimate veteran in
- 31:12Speaker 2: front of him who can tell him what to do.
- 31:15Speaker 2: From a mental perspective, because I'm sure I mean, Daniel Jones,
- 31:18Speaker 2: we talked about a little bit earlier. Daniel Jones don't
- 31:20Speaker 2: seem like a great example. Right. Like what Daniel Jones
- 31:22Speaker 2: told me about the pull up. I was like, hey, man,
- 31:24Speaker 2: here's how I identify the blitz. That don't seem like
- 31:28Speaker 2: the kind of guy that's going to get you any
- 31:29Speaker 2: closer to being the quarterback you need to be. I
- 31:32Speaker 2: would say, honestly, even in Baltimore, you can go look
- 31:34Speaker 2: at Lamar Jackson, who was not as inaccurate as Anthony
- 31:37Speaker 2: Richardson coming into the league. but certainly had some mechanical
- 31:41Speaker 2: stuff he needed to clean up. You get with a
- 31:43Speaker 2: guy like that, he might get you right. Honestly, you
- 31:45Speaker 2: get with a guy like Sam Darnold, who for whatever
- 31:47Speaker 2: reason has gone from a little too ambitious in New
- 31:50Speaker 2: York to not ambitious enough in Carolina, and then gets
- 31:53Speaker 2: to Minnesota, and now you're letting it loose again. You
- 31:56Speaker 2: might be able to go back up a guy like
- 31:58Speaker 2: that and get some training and be ready. I do
- 32:00Speaker 2: not think that we have seen the last of that guy,
- 32:02Speaker 2: and I don't think we've seen the last of him
- 32:04Speaker 2: being a viable starter.
- 32:05Speaker 3: In the league.
- 32:05Speaker 1: All right. You mentioned Darnold right quick. And this is
- 32:07Speaker 1: the thing that I think is worth saying. I did
- 32:09Speaker 1: not feel like the Sam Darnold of last year looked
- 32:12Speaker 1: that much different than the Sam Darnold of previous. The
- 32:15Speaker 1: results look different. I wasn't as so. And plus, he
- 32:19Speaker 1: had the best wide receiver in the league. Right.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Maybe the best play caller in the league.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it was a lot going on.
- 32:25Speaker 1: But in the end, he reverted in a way that
- 32:28Speaker 1: would terrify me.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:30Speaker 1: He reverted in a way that this isn't about how
- 32:33Speaker 1: good you are. This is about what we were talking
- 32:35Speaker 1: about before. This is about you losing your shit out
- 32:38Speaker 1: here in front of everybody. Like and nobody knows how
- 32:40Speaker 1: to fix that. There's not an answer. And look, some
- 32:43Speaker 1: guys do at points get past it or you just
- 32:45Speaker 1: are able to get past it for the one postseason
- 32:48Speaker 1: or whatever it is. Right. But he never he never.
- 32:52Speaker 1: That part he hasn't fixed, and he hasn't gotten right.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Seattle looks a lot better than expected. Keep in mind,
- 32:59Speaker 1: DK Metcalf does not play for them anymore, right? He's
- 33:02Speaker 1: out there making it happen, but I think that nothing matters,
- 33:07Speaker 1: and this is unfair to him, but I think you'll
- 33:09Speaker 1: feel me. Nothing matters until it matters. Oh, by the way,
- 33:12Speaker 1: they have the second-best point differential in the NFC over
- 33:14Speaker 1: there behind America's team, the Detroit Lions.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I mean, nothing about Seattle success right now really has
- 33:19Speaker 2: a lot to do with Sam Darnold. And I will
- 33:21Speaker 2: say that is best case scenario. If you are Sam Darnold,
- 33:25Speaker 2: you want to play for a team where no matter
- 33:27Speaker 2: what version of me shows up, you got everything else
- 33:29Speaker 2: teed up. Right. Their run game has been better. Their
- 33:32Speaker 2: defense might be the best in the NFL right now.
- 33:34Speaker 2: You're playing in that wide zone scheme you're talking about.
- 33:37Speaker 2: Having one of the Kubiak kids calling all the outside
- 33:40Speaker 2: zone for you. All he's got to do is just
- 33:42Speaker 2: get the ball to Jackson Smith and Jigba. That seems
- 33:45Speaker 2: simple enough. And as long as you can find that
- 33:46Speaker 2: guy in the middle of the field, you will probably
- 33:49Speaker 2: be just fine. But I'm with you until it's a
- 33:51Speaker 2: rematch against San Francisco, right? For the NFC West title
- 33:55Speaker 2: until we're in that wildcard round and you're in Philadelphia.
- 33:58Speaker 2: on that key third down and you know that Blitz
- 34:00Speaker 2: is coming or they're playing man coverage and you got
- 34:02Speaker 2: to sit in that pocket and deliver the ball accurately,
- 34:04Speaker 2: there is nothing that Sam Darnold can do to convince me.
- 34:07Speaker 2: I just think that right now he might be a
- 34:08Speaker 2: little bit better option than what's happening at his previous
- 34:12Speaker 2: stop in Minnesota.
- 34:13Speaker 1: By the way, 2025, we're still using names like Shanahan
- 34:16Speaker 1: and Kubiak. John Elway. Job creator. John Elway has put
- 34:21Speaker 1: those two families where they are for 40 something years.
- 34:26Speaker 1: They have been eating off of the legacy of John Elway.
- 34:29Speaker 1: But right fast, you mentioned the Eagles on your squad.
- 34:30Speaker 1: We talked about the Eagles on here. I feel like
- 34:32Speaker 1: they're last year's Chiefs. It feels like this is they're
- 34:36Speaker 1: getting it done, but something don't quite feel right. And
- 34:39Speaker 1: what I want to ask you about specifically, and I
- 34:40Speaker 1: think people lost sight of this. 2,000 yards and 2,000
- 34:44Speaker 1: yards worth of carries, especially at that age. I think
- 34:49Speaker 1: that people lose sight of the fact that this is
- 34:51Speaker 1: year nine or year eight for Saquon Barkley. I don't
- 34:56Speaker 1: know how good they're going to be as the year
- 34:59Speaker 1: goes on. And that is before we start talking about A.J. Brown,
- 35:02Speaker 1: you know, feeling like he in jail.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Right. I would say not only the Saquon Barkley right
- 35:08Speaker 2: now look like a running back who had over 500
- 35:10Speaker 2: touches in a calendar year. Right. You're talking about a
- 35:13Speaker 2: 35 year old Lane Johnson who has had to leave
- 35:15Speaker 2: two games so far this year. And when he's not
- 35:18Speaker 2: in the game, their run game is not the same.
- 35:20Speaker 2: And they've all they've lost Makai Becton, who was their
- 35:23Speaker 2: body mover on the interior. Landon Dickerson is always hurt.
- 35:26Speaker 2: They look like a team that just played in the
- 35:28Speaker 2: February and have to turn right back around. And they're
- 35:31Speaker 2: dealing with one of the toughest schedules in the NFL
- 35:33Speaker 2: right now. I think that they're OK because they do
- 35:36Speaker 2: remind me so much of Kansas City last year. where
- 35:40Speaker 2: they seem to kind of have a certain wit about them.
- 35:42Speaker 2: They don't necessarily lose their composure in these key moments.
- 35:46Speaker 2: If you're asking me, though, if they've got to see
- 35:48Speaker 2: the Rams again, do I trust it? No, right? Because
- 35:51Speaker 2: that means Jalen Hurts versus Matthew Stafford, and I don't
- 35:53Speaker 2: trust that in a key situation.
- 35:55Speaker 1: So it's so interesting that you say that because I do.
- 35:59Speaker 1: I'm a Hertz skeptic. I'm a Hertz and Sirianni skeptic.
- 36:01Speaker 1: They've won a Super Bowl. And I'm like, yeah, well,
- 36:04Speaker 1: you know, like, am I being wrong about being a hater?
- 36:06Speaker 1: That's OK. I am fascinated by the Stafford career art
- 36:10Speaker 1: where we talk about the long. We this dude seems
- 36:13Speaker 1: to get better every year and we're in year 17.
- 36:16Speaker 3: But.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I have always compared him to Carson Palmer and not
- 36:21Speaker 1: necessarily in a bad way, right? Like they are very
- 36:24Speaker 1: prototypically talented quarterbacks who to this day will still give
- 36:28Speaker 1: you a chance to win it. If you can hold
- 36:30Speaker 1: on to that heater that he's going to throw directly
- 36:32Speaker 1: into your chest that you're not expecting because you can't
- 36:34Speaker 1: believe that he's throwing that ball directly into your chest. However,
- 36:38Speaker 1: free at last, free at last, Devontae Adams is free
- 36:42Speaker 1: at last down there catching balls from Matthew Stafford and
- 36:45Speaker 1: he's not their best receiver.
- 36:47Speaker 2: Right. I think that and this is this is a
- 36:49Speaker 2: big reminder for me and all the preseason stuff where
- 36:52Speaker 2: everybody's so hot on the Rams.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 36:53Speaker 2: They're going to be the next contender out of the NFC.
- 36:56Speaker 2: I think it's very easy to lose sight of the fact,
- 36:58Speaker 2: to your point, December was so bad for them going
- 37:01Speaker 2: into the playoffs that Matthew Stafford basically had to take
- 37:04Speaker 2: week 18 off. Right. Sean McVay had to sit this
- 37:07Speaker 2: guy down and be like, hey, old man, I think
- 37:09Speaker 2: you need to get your mind and your body right
- 37:10Speaker 2: before you show back up to work. All right. Because
- 37:14Speaker 2: you're tripping right now. We're tripping right now. And then
- 37:17Speaker 2: you think about the back injury and the fact that
- 37:19Speaker 2: he's taking a bunch of pressure. Right. Like you look
- 37:21Speaker 2: at how often he's been sacked or knocked down. It's
- 37:23Speaker 2: in that top 10 rate.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 37:25Speaker 2: You're talking about taking a Justin Herbert level beating in
- 37:28Speaker 2: the pocket for a guy who is 10 years older
- 37:30Speaker 2: than Justin Herbert and already has a bad back and
- 37:33Speaker 2: has had one for decades. What, the last five, six
- 37:35Speaker 2: years now? While it's looked great this regular season and
- 37:38Speaker 2: while it looked great last postseason, this is a guy
- 37:41Speaker 2: similar to Tony Romo at the end of his career
- 37:44Speaker 2: every time he falls down. I'm holding my breath thinking
- 37:47Speaker 2: about how this excellent quarterback towards the later stages of
- 37:50Speaker 2: his career is going to go down and not get
- 37:52Speaker 2: back up. And I know Rams fans may not want
- 37:54Speaker 2: to hear that. And if they can keep him healthy
- 37:56Speaker 2: into the postseason, I do think that they can win
- 37:58Speaker 2: because Sean McVay seems to know when to turn Stafford
- 38:01Speaker 2: up and when to turn him down. As a quarterback,
- 38:04Speaker 2: I just have a hard time trusting a guy that
- 38:06Speaker 2: is as old as he is and taking the beating
- 38:09Speaker 2: that he has in spite of how good he's looked
- 38:11Speaker 2: so far this regular season.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Speaking of taking a beating, what week do you think
- 38:14Speaker 1: Puka is going to get hurt? Oh, man, that could
- 38:17Speaker 1: happen on the very next target.
- 38:19Speaker 2: We were talking about guys who go over the middle.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, man, I need you to know that
- 38:24Speaker 2: sometimes it's okay to catch the ball and just take
- 38:26Speaker 2: the first down. That extra three yards you fighting for
- 38:29Speaker 2: ain't always worth it, buddy. And you haven't gotten your
- 38:31Speaker 2: second contract yet. Let's get the guaranteed money up before
- 38:35Speaker 2: we start risking our body over the middle of the field.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I don't trust him not getting hurt. Devontae Adams is
- 38:41Speaker 2: up there in age, and he's been banged up before.
- 38:43Speaker 2: And then you got old bad back Stafford. So been
- 38:46Speaker 2: good for now. Let's see once we get to like
- 38:49Speaker 2: Thanksgiving weekend how this team actually looks.
- 38:51Speaker 1: And let me ask you this about the Eagles while
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'm thinking about it. And somebody mentioned this in the
- 38:55Speaker 1: YouTube comments on Monday where we talk about like. with
- 38:59Speaker 1: these cats out here wearing these expensive chains, back in
- 39:01Speaker 1: the day, it'd have been one player whose name would
- 39:03Speaker 1: have been the chain snatcher. It'd have just been some
- 39:05Speaker 1: or some bitch, middle linebacker, Jack Lambert, Dick Buckus, Ray
- 39:10Speaker 1: Lewis type, that's just going to be snatching chains and
- 39:13Speaker 1: not giving them back either. Like keeping them in a
- 39:15Speaker 1: bag on the sideline, just got a collection of chains.
- 39:19Speaker 1: How do we get this idea to Jalen Carter? Because
- 39:22Speaker 1: I feel like he is your throwback, mean some bitch.
- 39:27Speaker 1: We ain't really had too many of them out there.
- 39:29Speaker 1: He is the chain snatcher.
- 39:30Speaker 2: I was just watching a clip of I think it
- 39:32Speaker 2: was Deacon Jones. talking about how he would approach playing football, right?
- 39:36Speaker 2: And you talk about somebody being mean but could do
- 39:39Speaker 2: it with a smile on their face. That's what I
- 39:41Speaker 2: see in Jalen Carter. And I think that's the scariest
- 39:43Speaker 2: guy you could have on the defensive line. It's one
- 39:45Speaker 2: thing to be Aaron Donald, right, who is just, if
- 39:48Speaker 2: you're at 10, he's at 15. If you're at 15,
- 39:50Speaker 2: he's going to be at a 50. Right. And you
- 39:53Speaker 2: just know he's angry walking in the door with Jalen
- 39:55Speaker 2: Carter is when he's one of those guys that you
- 39:58Speaker 2: laughing because you think he's joking and you take two
- 40:00Speaker 2: steps away from that conversation. You say, hey, wait a minute, motherfucker.
- 40:04Speaker 2: You don't get to talk to me like that. And
- 40:07Speaker 2: now and then we're off from there.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:09Speaker 2: And the fact that he took, you know, you had
- 40:11Speaker 2: Jared versus eight chain. I think that if there were
- 40:14Speaker 2: offensive linemen who wore them, tackles and guards would be
- 40:17Speaker 2: getting them snatched left and right. I don't think that
- 40:19Speaker 2: that's a guy who– he clearly don't mind losing an
- 40:21Speaker 2: opportunity to play in a game over something that he
- 40:24Speaker 2: perceives as a slight, given how he reacted to Dak
- 40:26Speaker 2: Prescott spitting. And that's a guy I think that, you know,
- 40:29Speaker 2: you see him picking running backs up in the backfield
- 40:32Speaker 2: and playing around, and that's the way that he's been
- 40:34Speaker 2: since Georgia. We are definitely going to get one of
- 40:36Speaker 2: the moments where a whole game has to stop because
- 40:38Speaker 2: Jalen Carter decided– That guard, that guard, that tackle, and
- 40:41Speaker 2: that center can all get it at the same time.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I just love Howie Roseman. Like, yeah, we're going to
- 40:46Speaker 1: go shopping at Georgia, see what they got that we
- 40:48Speaker 1: can pick up. You guys want anything from Georgia? We're
- 40:51Speaker 1: just going to go get all the Georgia guys we can.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Then after that, we'll worry about the rest later.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Look, top shelf to what's in the well. Whatever you
- 40:59Speaker 2: got to offer, I'm drinking it. I am brand dedicated.
- 41:05Speaker 2: If you come with that sticker on your helmet, I
- 41:07Speaker 2: want you. It don't matter what else is going on here.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Yeah, like tell me more. Tell me more.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Like, oh, okay.
- 41:12Speaker 1: All right. Yeah, I hear you.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I hear you.
- 41:14Speaker 1: I had mentioned America's team, Detroit Lions. It looked bad
- 41:17Speaker 1: week one. And I was just like, okay, there's no
- 41:19Speaker 1: push up the middle. This is terrifying. And then since then,
- 41:21Speaker 1: they've been the best team in the NFL. And like,
- 41:24Speaker 1: I don't, I don't, I don't. It's still how far
- 41:28Speaker 1: you think you can go with Jared Goff. And the
- 41:30Speaker 1: answer is I've seen a team go to the Super
- 41:32Speaker 1: Bowl with Jared Goff. I can't pretend like you can't
- 41:34Speaker 1: do that with him. But they look good, Jack.
- 41:38Speaker 2: They look great. And Goff is playing as well, if
- 41:40Speaker 2: not better than he has, not just in his time
- 41:43Speaker 2: in Detroit, but since that 2018 year with Sean McVay
- 41:46Speaker 2: and the Rams. And I struggle with trying to figure
- 41:49Speaker 2: out what to do with the guy like that because
- 41:51Speaker 2: he's another one similar to Darnold, similar to some of
- 41:53Speaker 2: those guys that we talk about. You land in the
- 41:55Speaker 2: fourth quarter chasing 10 points and you got to put
- 41:58Speaker 2: the ball in his hands and say, hey, dude, about
- 42:00Speaker 2: to be 15 straight dropbacks. You got to get us
- 42:01Speaker 2: back in the football game. At least two or three
- 42:04Speaker 2: of them throws is about to land in a quarterback's chest.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:07Speaker 2: But I do I do believe that the infrastructure there
- 42:11Speaker 2: is so healthy. I do 100 percent believe in Dan Campbell,
- 42:14Speaker 2: crazy as it is being the meathead that he is
- 42:16Speaker 2: as a head coach. just seems to have a grip
- 42:19Speaker 2: on that team's emotional fortitude, which is not something that
- 42:23Speaker 2: I would readily associate with a guy like Dan Campbell.
- 42:26Speaker 2: So it's been a trip, but they are clearly still
- 42:28Speaker 2: one of the three best.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Teams in the league. The 2015 version of me, or
- 42:32Speaker 1: maybe it was 2014, whatever year it was that he
- 42:35Speaker 1: was the interim coach of the Dolphins, has never been
- 42:38Speaker 1: more wrong about what somebody actually turned out to be,
- 42:42Speaker 1: as I have been about Dan Campbell.
- 42:44Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if you saw the hard
- 42:46Speaker 2: knocks clip where he was in the middle of the
- 42:48Speaker 2: huddle crying, not because something traumatic happened, but because he
- 42:52Speaker 2: was trying to explain why tackling at practice was so important.
- 42:56Speaker 2: This is a guy brought to tears, I think, just
- 42:58Speaker 2: by the thought of playing football. Maybe that is what
- 43:02Speaker 2: resonates with guys. And I think that maybe it's been
- 43:05Speaker 2: overstated over the last decade or so. as we brought
- 43:08Speaker 2: in more of the pencil pusher archetypes into sports, right?
- 43:11Speaker 2: Where we think, oh, you know, the biggest thinkers and
- 43:14Speaker 2: the guys who design it best, those are the guys
- 43:16Speaker 2: who are going to lead us forward. Sometimes you do
- 43:18Speaker 2: need somebody who with tears in their eyes will grab
- 43:21Speaker 2: you by your shoulder pads, MF you for the next
- 43:23Speaker 2: 30 seconds, and then clutch you up to give you
- 43:26Speaker 2: the biggest hug you've ever had in your life. It
- 43:28Speaker 2: seems to work. It seems to resonate with guys like that.
- 43:31Speaker 2: And the players on their team outside of golf all seem,
- 43:33Speaker 2: I think, to be personified by that exact same mentality.
- 43:38Speaker 1: But they also execute very specifically, right? Because when you
- 43:41Speaker 1: think about somebody like that, we think about that, like,
- 43:44Speaker 1: play like your hair is on fire sort of situation.
- 43:47Speaker 1: But no, like watching that running game, like week one,
- 43:49Speaker 1: that was the thing, was like, man, they can't run
- 43:51Speaker 1: the ball at all. It looked like Ben Johnson never left,
- 43:54Speaker 1: which tells me that the offensive coordinator actually might be
- 43:59Speaker 1: Dan Campbell.
- 44:01Speaker 2: There's a reason why he picked him out, right? Dan
- 44:03Speaker 2: Campbell could have gone after Anthony Lynn got let go.
- 44:06Speaker 2: He could have gone in any old direction. He looked
- 44:08Speaker 2: at Ben Johnson specifically and said, not only do you
- 44:11Speaker 2: know what I'm looking for, he was probably the guy
- 44:13Speaker 2: that he was thinking, if I tell him we need
- 44:16Speaker 2: to go smash a team in the mouth 25 times
- 44:19Speaker 2: on Sunday, he's going to do what I ask him
- 44:21Speaker 2: to do. And I think the same thing is happening
- 44:23Speaker 2: with John Morton, who does not have the most prestigious
- 44:26Speaker 2: resume coming into this gig. I think that that's another
- 44:29Speaker 2: guy that he identified and said he's made up some
- 44:32Speaker 2: of the same stuff I'm made up with and what
- 44:33Speaker 2: he don't have that makes Dan Campbell, Dan Campbell, Dan
- 44:36Speaker 2: Campbell can feed it through him. And I think that
- 44:38Speaker 2: he is ultimately the visionary that makes this offense go.
- 44:41Speaker 1: Let me ask you one more thing. Uh, while I'm
- 44:43Speaker 1: thinking about it, um, the dolphins one, they are now
- 44:47Speaker 1: one in three, very good for them that they are
- 44:49Speaker 1: one in three anyway. Well, we, you think it's going
- 44:52Speaker 1: to be Tyreek Hill. Ain't got no leg no more. Um,
- 44:56Speaker 1: This does not feel like many victories are coming down
- 44:59Speaker 1: the pike for them boys down there.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Look, when I saw Mike McDaniel looking frozen on the sideline,
- 45:04Speaker 2: I think in week two, I was like, hey, man,
- 45:07Speaker 2: that looks like a guy. that if you don't fire
- 45:09Speaker 2: him by Tuesday, he just might not show up to work.
- 45:12Speaker 2: And you see him at these press conferences, and he
- 45:14Speaker 2: is totally flummoxed by a very simple line of questioning
- 45:18Speaker 2: at times. I think just on Monday, he might have
- 45:20Speaker 2: been doing a sideline interview, and I'm watching him kind
- 45:23Speaker 2: of stammer through an answer. And I don't want to
- 45:26Speaker 2: make too much of how he's responding to questions, but
- 45:28Speaker 2: that's just not the guy that we were looking at
- 45:31Speaker 2: four years ago. Four years ago, this is a dude
- 45:33Speaker 2: who was very bright eyed. I'm the guy who designed this,
- 45:37Speaker 2: you know, creative run game for Kyle Shanahan and that offense.
- 45:40Speaker 2: I know how to make it work with Tua Tunga-Vailoa.
- 45:43Speaker 2: That's not the guy we're seeing on the sideline right now.
- 45:45Speaker 2: That looks like a guy who understands I might not
- 45:48Speaker 2: have it no more. And now that he don't have
- 45:50Speaker 2: the best receiver that you could possibly have for this offense,
- 45:54Speaker 2: I expect that this thing is probably going to go
- 45:55Speaker 2: careening off the road pretty quickly.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Well, I guess, and no shade to our brother, Mike McDaniel.
- 46:03Speaker 1: He fits in line with the pencil-pushing archetype that you discussed. Now,
- 46:07Speaker 1: this dude that played college football, he's been around the game.
- 46:10Speaker 1: I'm not saying that as a slight, but I do
- 46:12Speaker 1: think he's a big brain. He's there to be a
- 46:15Speaker 1: big brain, and I don't feel like that guy has
- 46:19Speaker 1: a second play. If my excellent strategy isn't working, I
- 46:26Speaker 1: don't know what card he's got after that.
- 46:28Speaker 2: We saw that last year, right? In the second half
- 46:30Speaker 2: of the season, they were winning games. And I think
- 46:32Speaker 2: it's easy to forget because of that. And I think
- 46:35Speaker 2: the schedule was really light as they were winning games too.
- 46:37Speaker 2: But when they were playing Buffalo, I think it was
- 46:39Speaker 2: like the first Thursday night game of the season last year.
- 46:41Speaker 2: You're looking up and it's like, oh, Buffalo, who also
- 46:44Speaker 2: kind of has a defense that struggles with being physical,
- 46:46Speaker 2: is punching this offense in the mouth. And Mike McDaniel
- 46:48Speaker 2: does not have a counter for that. And it has
- 46:51Speaker 2: come up time and time again. The Kansas City game
- 46:53Speaker 2: in the playoffs a few years ago was defined by that.
- 46:57Speaker 2: And this team, I think, has just been built with
- 46:58Speaker 2: that in mind, and they have never addressed it by player.
- 47:02Speaker 2: And you look at their style of play, it's beautiful
- 47:04Speaker 2: when Devon A-Chain is out there in the flat, you know,
- 47:07Speaker 2: making guys miss and getting a bunch of yards after catch.
- 47:10Speaker 2: It's beautiful when Jalen Waddell is running those deep post
- 47:12Speaker 2: routes into a wide open middle of the field. But
- 47:15Speaker 2: when a defense shows up and says, yeah, oh, that's beautiful,
- 47:18Speaker 2: but you, Mr. Tua, we're going to hit you a
- 47:21Speaker 2: whole bunch. I don't think that Mike McDaniel or Tua Tungvalu,
- 47:24Speaker 2: for that matter, have had a great response for it.
- 47:26Speaker 2: And I think that it shows up in a lot
- 47:28Speaker 2: of ways on and off the field if you look
- 47:30Speaker 2: at their demeanor and the way that they react when
- 47:32Speaker 2: they're playing top competition.
- 47:34Speaker 1: By the way, you just mentioned it before we go.
- 47:37Speaker 1: As good as Buffalo has looked, you're not winning this
- 47:40Speaker 1: whole thing when anybody can run the ball against you.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Like three or four games in January or February when
- 47:48Speaker 1: it's y'all are Burger Kings when it's time to run
- 47:52Speaker 1: the ball. Ooh, I don't see that.
- 47:56Speaker 2: And it ain't for lack of trying. Every offseason, I
- 47:58Speaker 2: feel like they're bringing in more veteran defensive linemen who
- 48:01Speaker 2: are supposed to be these gap-plugging, run-stopping guys, and it
- 48:05Speaker 2: has not made a single difference. I was told it
- 48:07Speaker 2: was going to be fixed when Matt Milano got healthy
- 48:09Speaker 2: last year. Didn't get fixed then. I've been told it's
- 48:12Speaker 2: going to be better once their defensive backfield gets healthy
- 48:14Speaker 2: and they can play closer to the line of scrimmage
- 48:17Speaker 2: and do more man coverage stuff, and it hasn't been
- 48:19Speaker 2: helped then. The best that any run game has looked
- 48:21Speaker 2: this season is still that week one Sunday night game
- 48:25Speaker 2: between Buffalo and Baltimore. where it looked like Derrick Henry
- 48:27Speaker 2: was basically running on air half the time. And their safeties,
- 48:31Speaker 2: Cole Bishop, Taylor Rapp, could have taken any angle they wanted,
- 48:34Speaker 2: and they were not going to be fast enough to
- 48:35Speaker 2: catch those guys. That's 100% going to be what keeps
- 48:38Speaker 2: that team from competing for a Super Bowl the way
- 48:41Speaker 2: that they should be able to given the quarterback that
- 48:43Speaker 2: they've got.
- 48:43Speaker 1: All right, Deontay Lee, check him out at Durango covering
- 48:47Speaker 1: the NFL. Check out his power rankings coming out on Tuesdays.
- 48:51Speaker 1: My man, I greatly appreciate you. Looking forward to doing
- 48:53Speaker 1: this again.
