- 0:54is brought to you by the financial support of our listeners, and you can
- 0:57support the show at support dot com, Rightdetectives dot net. Well, we're
- 1:02going to begin our first presentation of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. And this
- 1:07isn't the one most likely that you've heard most often. If you've heard the
- 1:12series, that's the CBS series starring Gerald Moore. This series was an NBC
- 1:19summer series and it starred Van Hefflin. So we're going to talk about the
- 1:23star and we'll talk a little bit about the series and its concept. The
- 1:27star was Van Heflin, who took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in nineteen
- 1:38forty three for his role in Johnny Eager, and he was recognized with stars
- 1:48on the Walks of Fame. His career was not as prestigious as some others.
- 1:53Outside of those Oscar Wins, he really did get into that whole character
- 2:00actor Grove, and perhaps not as many credits as some others, but still
- 2:06a decent and respectable actor who, perhaps just because of looks and superficialness,
- 2:12never quite hit that same level as many other stars. While the later Philip
- 2:17marlow series was essentially original stories, this series sought to adapt Raymond Chandler's stories
- 2:28to the air in the summer of nineteen forty seven. It's probably worth noting
- 2:34that while these were Raymond Chandler stories, they weren't original Philip Marlowe stories.
- 2:39The only original Philip Marlowe short story was released in nineteen fifty nine, at
- 2:46least by Chandler anyway. Today's story, Red Wind, was originally published in
- 2:52magazine form about a detective named John Dalmas, would later officially become a fully
- 3:00revised Philip Marlowe story in the short story collection The Simple Art of Murder,
- 3:07published in nineteen fifty. As Chandler had sensed to see that people wouldn't be
- 3:13concerned about his other detectives, but Philip marlow it would be pretty easy just
- 3:20to tweak a few details and you could have a fully revitalized Philip Marlowe's story.
- 3:28Indeed, after the success of The Big Slate, several of Chandler's novels
- 3:34borrowed from his pulp fiction stories. We do have the audition from this series.
- 3:38It's the same story as the first episode, and since that's also repeated
- 3:45the first episode of the CBS series, we'll just go ahead and start off
- 3:50with Red Wind original air date June seventeenth of nineteen forty seven, or The
- 3:57Safety of Your Smile Use Pepsident twice a day, See your Dentist twice a
- 4:01year. Lever Brothers Company presents the Pepsident program The Adventures of Philip marlow starring
- 4:19Van Heflin. Pepsident presents Philip Marlowe, Hollywood's famous private detective, created by
- 4:32Raymond Chandler. Philip Marlowe, tough, cynical private eye of Murder My Suite,
- 4:39the sardonic case Harden, detective of the Brasher, Da Bloon, The
- 4:42Lady in the Lake, and The Big Sleep. You've seen him in action
- 4:46in all of those top flight mystery pictures. Now in order that you may
- 4:48continue to enjoy this exciting mystery series, Pepsident brings you the adventures of Philip
- 4:55Marlow on the air, with a cast of noted radio players and starring MGM's
- 5:00brilliant and dynamic young actor Van Heflin. Now, families all over America have
- 5:16named their favorite toothpaste New Pepsident, with arium new fresh tasting Pepsident with a
- 5:23new cool minty flavor. It's the three to one favorite over all other toothpastes.
- 5:29It's true with families all over America. New Pepsident is the favorite three
- 5:33to one. Families from coast to coast recently compared New Pepsident with other toothpastes
- 5:39at home. They preferred New Pepsident by an overwhelming average of three to one
- 5:45over all other brands they tried. These families three to one said new Pepsidant
- 5:50tastes better, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter. Yes, families three
- 5:56to one say New Pepsident taste better, makes bread cleaner, makes teeth brighter.
- 6:01Get New PEPs In a toothpaste for your family right away. There was
- 6:24a rough desert wind blowing into Los Angeles that evening. It was one of
- 6:28those hot, dry santanas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your
- 6:32hair, make your nerves jump in your skin. Itch. On nights like
- 6:38that, every booze party ends up in a fight, and meek little housewives
- 6:43feel the edge of a carving knife and study their husband's necks. Anything can
- 6:47happen when the Santanna blows in from the desert. I closed up my office
- 6:58early. I got tired of reading Philip Marlow, Private Investigator backwards on the
- 7:01ground glass at my office door. So I opened the door and closed it
- 7:06from the outside and locked it and went out to get a beer before I
- 7:10went up to my apartment. Filler up again, mister Marlon Marlow. Marlow
- 7:19Marlin is a fash. Yeah, I know. Hey, Hey, your
- 7:24watch right? Drunk again? What do you expect in this business? Autograph
- 7:30hands? Be right with your sport. I gotta draw this man a beer.
- 7:33I'm not allowed. These stumble bumps have come in here. You got
- 7:36another customer back is Hey, but you've seen a lady in here lately.
- 7:44A lady tall, good looking, brown hair, a print poalo jacket and
- 7:48a blue silk dress. No, sir, nobody like that's binner. I
- 7:55straight Scotch fast left my engine running out there. Yes, sir, Yes,
- 7:59sir. A slick looking, sarcastic guy stepped up to the bar and
- 8:05drank his scotch hole and he stopped. The drunk was grinning at him,
- 8:11and then, without changing his grin, the drunk swept a gun from somewhere
- 8:15so fast it was just a blur coming out. Made a couple of hard
- 8:18snaps and a little smoke curl very little. All right, show other guys
- 8:26don't move so long. Wall all right, Tom of you too, Oh,
- 8:37but I made his nose bleed. Song boys, drink up, all
- 8:45right, Get on that phone, kid, I'll get his license number.
- 8:48Holy smoke, Holy smoke. Not too late the way, have this dead
- 8:56guy's car? Maybe he ain't dead, he's dead, all right, where's
- 9:01your phone? This is for the police. The Proud car boys were there
- 9:11in about five minutes. Walder was out of business, all right, and
- 9:16nothing in his pockets told who he was. But he had about seven hundred
- 9:20dollars on him. I told the cops what I knew, including about Waldo's
- 9:24tall, brown haired pretty girl in the blaro jacket. It's about nine o'clock
- 9:30when I stepped out of the elevator in my apartment house and almost walked right
- 9:33into a tall, brown haired, pretty girl in a blaro jacket waiting for
- 9:37the elevator on my floor. Oh, excuse me just a minute, lady,
- 9:43I said, excuse me, I'm gonna hurry if you can not go
- 9:46outside in those clothes. Just what do you mean by telling me this isn't
- 9:50gonna make you're in trouble? Trouble? Yeah, the cops are looking for
- 9:54you in those clothes. But I haven't done anything that. I'm in room
- 9:58forty one across the well. Now, I never collected matching in my life.
- 10:01All right, I'll go with you. I'll go. I got to
- 10:09my room and rustled up some scotch and sodaen broth girl or glass. She
- 10:15had a small automatic in her hand. It jumped up at me and her
- 10:18eyes were full of panic, and I put down both glasses on the table
- 10:24slowly so that I wouldn't be misunderstood. Look, sister, maybe this wind
- 10:31has got you crazy too, Cale, don't move. A man just got
- 10:35shot in a bar down the street. Before he got it, he'd been
- 10:37asking about a tall, pretty girl with a blarrow jacket like yours. What
- 10:43do he look like this man, tall five eleven, slim, dark dark
- 10:46brown eyes with a lot of glitter, dark suit, white handkerchief from the
- 10:50breast pocket. And he must have seen you earlier to night to know how
- 10:54you addressed? Am I getting anywhere? Used to be my chauffeur? He
- 11:00had an appointment with him, didn't you, Lessen? He asked for you,
- 11:03didn't he? Yes? I had an appointment with him. He'd stolen
- 11:05something from me when he left three days ago. I was going to buy
- 11:09it back from him? Why didn't you tell the police? Couldn't tell him
- 11:11it was valuable? Wasn't it valuable enough for Walder to steel? Ten thousand
- 11:15dollars? That's peanuts? But it wasn't the value. It meant something to
- 11:18me. The man I love gave it to me, and now he's dead.
- 11:24He was a flyer shut down over Germany. I'll go back and tell
- 11:28my husband that he probably hired you. He did. How much is he
- 11:33paying me? And where is this husband of yours? Is that a meeting
- 11:37this late at night? He's a very important man. He's a hydro electric
- 11:39engineer. I'll have you know that my husband is one to get it.
- 11:43I'll take him out to lunch sometime and have him tell me himself and about
- 11:46Waldo. Whatever he had on you is dead stock now like Waldo himself.
- 11:52He's dead. Was dead, yes, sister, he's dead, dead dead
- 11:58dead, lady, he is dead. I was scream and I'll give you
- 12:01two black eyes. I couldn't scream. How would that be? There was
- 12:07addressing room behind that door there now, don't argue with me doing all right?
- 12:24And I went to the door, making a loud and yawnings on the
- 12:28backs of my hands were wet. I opened the door without a gun.
- 12:33That was a mistake. I certainly knew the gun. I was looking into
- 12:37a twenty two target automatic that had already killed one man that night. And
- 12:41I knew the ball head and the flat, shiny eyes and the face like
- 12:45a poisonous lizard. Baldi put the muzzle of his gun lightly against my throat.
- 12:50I backed into the room, and Baldy kicked the door, shutting you
- 12:56alone, look for yourself. I'm asking, not looking. I'm alone wing
- 13:03that dumb buttender, So may dust off wall What did Wallow do to you?
- 13:07I was asking, just making conversation. He stood on me on a
- 13:11bank job. We did together got me four years in Michigan. Pin,
- 13:18how is he dead? I'm still good, drunk or sober? Tell me
- 13:26why I came here? Pal, You heard the barkeeper and me talking,
- 13:31and I told him my name, where I lived. That's how Pale,
- 13:35I said, why I skip at the hangman? Would ask you to guess
- 13:37why he's there. You're pretty tough at that answer. But you're slamming off
- 13:43Pal. All right, but you could get that gun out of my neck
- 13:48and try somewhere else. Yeah, sure that's better. That's such a just
- 13:52so it is my neck save when Pal chure party. I leaned against the
- 13:58gun. The door of the dressing room showed a crack of darkness. The
- 14:03crack widened. I began to shake a little. The girl came quietly into
- 14:07the room, but there was white all around her. Iris. She was
- 14:09scared. She had her gun in her hand, but I was sorry for
- 14:15dead. Sorry. She'd tried to make the door scream. Either way,
- 14:18it'd be curtains for both of us. Scared, mister, you're worried about
- 14:22any little thing. I couldn't talk. The girl floated in the air,
- 14:26somewhere behind Baldy, and her horrified face was drifting toward us. My mouth
- 14:33was as cold and dry as yesterday's toast, wild ken as it feel.
- 14:41You're ready yet, go on say the word? Well, don't take all
- 14:45night about it. If you're if you're going to do something about it,
- 14:48why not pall? I like this? I suppose I yell, go ahead,
- 14:52yeah, go ahead, way, Look, thanks sister. Thanks that
- 15:01that buys me. Everything I have is yours now and forever. You flattered
- 15:09me. No end, lady, I only punched him. Why not get
- 15:11out here while I call the cops down on this killer? Yes? Good
- 15:16night? Hey? Wait wait, leave that blurred jacket here, It marks
- 15:18you for the cops. Yes here, okay, see you again? Why
- 15:26oh I don't know now, I guess not. After all, who am
- 15:30I to be the rival of a dead flyer? I'll see that the police
- 15:33get Jesse James here. Good night, lady, Yeah, me and me?
- 15:56Yes? Please? Oh you again? Huh? Get in? I
- 16:03must talk to you. Want to know what happened at headquarters? Huh?
- 16:08Yes. I went down there with the law and gave him the story.
- 16:11I left you out of him. Oh, thank you. You saved my
- 16:15life. So no one knows a thing about you. Well, incidentally,
- 16:18neither do I. Oh, my name is missus Frank Vasiley two twelve Fremont
- 16:22Places, Olympia two four five nine six. Is that what you want?
- 16:27I guess so, well, there it is? And why did you really
- 16:32come back? I wanted my pearls. Pearls, yes, pearls too.
- 16:38All right, tell me about the pearls. Bet a murder and a beautiful
- 16:42mystery woman and a sadistic killer and the heroic rescue. Now we will have
- 16:48pearls. I was to buy them back from the man called Waldo. Well,
- 16:52I saw everything that came out of his pockets, and there weren't any
- 16:53pearls. Could they be hidden in his apartment? It's possible Waldo lived on
- 16:59the same floor you do in this apartment house. And why didn't I know
- 17:02him? At least by sight? He moved in last week he managed to
- 17:04get a sublb great a sort of an amateur magician on the side. Huh,
- 17:10it's getting rather late. Yeah, what about your husband? This hot,
- 17:12mysterious night, still it is meeting. You could have brought him along.
- 17:17You could have sat in the backseat working out a problem in hydro electrics.
- 17:19Walk. Wow, what well? I didn't have any answers. They
- 17:26wouldn't sound cheap or just ridiculous, or from the sophomore class and rape Heartee
- 17:33had none. Let cigarette in my hand, I threw it out of the
- 17:34window. I took a hold of her and kissed her. She said very
- 17:41still. I was shaking when I let go over her. Her voice trembled
- 17:48a little when she spoke. I man sure to do that. I wasn't
- 17:53always that way, only since Johnny Dalmas was killed in the war. He
- 18:00gave me those pearls, forty one of them, perfectly matched with a diamond
- 18:03for colored class. I'd have loved them if they'd been wooden beads, because
- 18:08he gave them to me. I loved Johnny. Were you loved just one
- 18:15time? You understand that? Hmm? What's your name? Lola? Lola?
- 18:26How did you explain a fifteen thousand dollar pearl necklace to your husband?
- 18:30I told him they were imitation than I bought for myself. How did Waldo
- 18:33lat John Tillmore what they stood for? Well, my husband was in Argentina,
- 18:37Walden. I'd go for long drives. I was restless and wretched because
- 18:41of Johnny. Sometimes Waldor and I had a little drink together. But that's
- 18:45all that you can fight in Walder about this pearl How was a fool when
- 18:49your husband came back? Waller stole the pearls and offered to sell them back
- 18:52to your hotel Papa house. Fool? And now you think the pearls are
- 18:56upstairs and Waller's apartment. It's a lot to ask, No, sweetheart,
- 19:03I've been paid. I'll go look wait here, has that gon long lolo?
- 19:26No? Well, no, no pearls, no pearls. Oh,
- 19:34there was a man in Warlow's room, a man who you know? A
- 19:38man named Leon Barlsanos. Not by name, I don't know, Mexican,
- 19:42South America, about forty five, small, iron, gray hair, very
- 19:47neat, fawn colored suit, wine colored tie. No, I don't think
- 19:51I know such a man. Is he the one in Waldo's room? Yeah?
- 19:55What do you have to say? Very little, in fact nothing.
- 20:00He's dead. You are listening to the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, starring Van
- 20:15Heflin music composed and conducted by Lynn Murray. Yes, families all over America
- 20:22have named their favorite toothpaste new pepsident with invigorating rriium foam new, fresh tasting
- 20:30Pepsident with a new cool, minty flavor. It's the three to one favorite
- 20:34over all other toothpastes. It's true with families all over America. New Pepsident
- 20:41is the favorite three to one. The Feral family of Evergreen Park, Illinois,
- 20:45preferred New Pepsident on every single count. The pharaohs say new Pepsident tastes
- 20:51best of all, makes breath cleaner, makes teeth brighter on all these counts,
- 20:56by an overwhelming average of three to one. Families prefer New Pepsident over
- 21:02all other toothpastes they've tried. It's a fact. Families three to one say
- 21:07new Pepsident tastes better, makes breath cleaner, and makes teeth brighter. Remember
- 21:12this is not just our opinion, it's the honest conviction of the pharaohs and
- 21:17other families who compared New Pepsident with other toothpastes they had at home. Get
- 21:22New Pepsident, the only toothpaste containing riium. Get it for your family without
- 21:27delay. We continue with the Adventures of Philip Marlowe, created by Raymond Chandler
- 21:42and starring Van Heflin, who appears by arrangement with Metro Golden Mayre, producers
- 21:48of the technicol Or musical Fiesta starring Esther Williams, I said, with all
- 21:59of us in her car, listening to that jittery, infuriating desert wind gallop
- 22:03around in the midnight streets, I just told her about the Latin looking man
- 22:08I'd found in Waldour's room in a very dead condition. I held her hands
- 22:14until they stopped trembling. Then I gave her the few remaining details. He
- 22:21had a gun and a shoulder hoster, but someone had strangled him before he
- 22:25could use it. Someone Waldo. Maybe you see that convertible coop two cars
- 22:30ahead of us. It's been there for hours, was there before I parked
- 22:33here to wait for you, Leon. The man in Waldo's room came in
- 22:37that car, But according to the key containers he carried, that isn't his
- 22:41car. Whose car is it? Does it matter? Well, it belongs
- 22:44to a lady, according to the tag on the keys, A lady.
- 22:48Well, anyway, a woman if you're gonna split hairs. Eugenie Kochenko in
- 22:53West Los Angeles, All right, well you go home. Now, what
- 23:00are you going to do? Drive that Flossi convertible around wave with my friends.
- 23:03Impressed people. You run along now you have got another date? Yes,
- 23:23what does it? Please? Miss Eugenie Colchenko? Yes? What is
- 23:27it? Did you lose or misplace a pigeon gray convertible coup? What are
- 23:33you saying? Don't be alarmed? I found it and I brought it home
- 23:36to you. Come in please, it is a reward you wish, shall
- 23:42we say? Snap out of a dragon? Lady? Who was he?
- 23:45Who was the little guy leon? You loaned your card? Who he's dead?
- 23:48Who was he? Oh? No? No, oh yes, yes,
- 23:55darling, darling, come here please? Who is this man? I
- 24:00came about Miss Kochenko's car? What about her car? A gentleman who borrowed
- 24:06it couldn't return it on account of he isn't alive. He's dead, darling.
- 24:10He's dead. That's putting it more bluntly, of course, dead completely.
- 24:15Who are you Philip Marlowe? Prive investigating my card? M h,
- 24:23it's all the police shad never do at once? What can be deferred pending
- 24:29negotiations? He's I might negotiate, Oh, PITCHI what do you know?
- 24:34Malo? A man named Waldo was shot in a bar tonight. I happened
- 24:38to have the inside as to who he was. And when I visited his
- 24:42apartment tonight, I found this Leeo Barsanos dead. He wouldn't have had five
- 24:48hundred dollars in twenties on him, no, but this Waldo had over seven
- 24:52hundred dollars on him when he was killed at that cocktail bar, mostly in
- 24:56twenties. Is there a basis there for a Nego siations yet? Very well,
- 25:02mellow, I'm a married man. Were certain unpaid bills for some stuff
- 25:07it's called tchenko here had charged to my account, But you told me I
- 25:11might charge to your account, all right, So I wasn't very bright.
- 25:14That might be the understatement of the decade that go on. I had the
- 25:18unpaid bills safely in my briefcase. Somehow this Waldo had a chance to steal
- 25:22the briefcase. I hired Leon and gave him five hundred dollars to buy back
- 25:26those bills from Waldo. Instead, Waldo took Leon's dough and was forced to
- 25:32kill Leon in the process. And then he went out to keep another date
- 25:34and accidentally walked into an old pal hostile enough to blow him down. And
- 25:40someone still has those bills. I'm in for a divorce suit. The man
- 25:45who shot Waldow got away in Waldo's car with your briefcase in it. Yeah,
- 25:49it could be the cops caught him. Oh, and the police have
- 25:55the briefcase. Maybe, but the police are interested in solving crime, not
- 26:00in tossing mud for the benefit of sensation eaters. Look, I've got a
- 26:03friend or two at headquarters. Let me see what I can do. It's
- 26:06worth five hundred dollars to me. Well, then that's fun. It'll cost
- 26:08you well, good luck and thank you, mister Marlow, Philip Marlow.
- 26:15Remember my name is Frank Barcela barce barcely Oh what does that mean? The
- 26:25big hydro electric engineer. Yeah, how did you know? My voice is
- 26:30still me? Oh, darling? This man is monuciocely In. It's the
- 26:36heat miscal chink, It's the Santa, and it's the desert wind. May
- 26:40I use your telephone someday? I must tell you about ibera sol of the
- 26:52earth. Hebarra, Detective Lieutenant over Central Homicide. I phoned the bear from
- 26:56this called Chenko's house and told him hurr he could find a well dress cadaver
- 27:00named Leon and furnished a few small details. I gave it bare a time
- 27:04to check my tip, and then I went down to see the good lieutenant
- 27:07and told him why I've been up in Walder's room only to find leon instead
- 27:11of a certain lady's string of pearls. Pearls, Eh, well, I
- 27:17thought Waldo might have him up there. Whose pearls were they, oh,
- 27:21ladies? Or they might have been in Waldor's car that Waldor's killer drove away
- 27:26in what Yeah, they might have also a batch of unpaid bills charged to
- 27:33the account of a certain Frank Varslay. Yeah. Well, now the police
- 27:38aren't interested in domestic scandal. They want to prevent or to solve crime.
- 27:44Right, So I've got five hundred dollars for the police fund if those pearls
- 27:48and those bills are returned to their rightful owners. Kidding, No, No,
- 27:52it's it's a valuable necklace. There's your nextlace. That's it. Forty
- 28:02one pearls, perfectly matched diamond propeller class. That's it. That's the one.
- 28:06Jake it away, Morrow on the level. Just tell me straight what
- 28:10it's all about, all man? Sure? Sure? Well, this waller
- 28:12was blackmailing a wife with the pearls and her husband with the bills, got
- 28:18the name of Barsela. Well, Barsley sent Leon to get the bills from
- 28:21Waldo. Instead, Waldo kill Leon, then stepped out and happened to get
- 28:26shot by that guy at the bar. Now, if Barsily's name stays out
- 28:29of the paper, I get five hundred dollars and that goes to the police
- 28:33fund. We'll keep him out. Well, now, I'm not in this
- 28:36case for money. I just want to get back the bills and the pearls.
- 28:38As you say, Marrow, the police sound in business to sling money.
- 28:41Well, you can deliver the pearls to the lady yourself if you like.
- 28:45She lives it noon, no morrow, you better take them to her.
- 28:48You see, except for the diamond propeller, clasp on them. They're
- 28:53they're phony, phonny, but all but the class Morrow, all but the
- 28:59class. Well, I stared at me. Verah, so the flyer Johnny
- 29:12downas the Great Lover had given Lola a string of fake pearls. Well,
- 29:19I didn't know how to tell her, but I called her up and told
- 29:22her to meet me at the beach combers. That two I was and a
- 29:26slip of the bad news. Slowly I'm glad you asked me to meet you
- 29:32here. Mister Mollow. See, I had to have someone to talk to.
- 29:37Go ahead, ahead, talked. I must say it, no,
- 29:40mister Mollow, No more than ever I must. I must have those pearls.
- 29:45Why money trouble? Oh no, no, it's just that everything's gone
- 29:51wrong this morning. My husband told me where to separate. Oh I'm sorry,
- 29:56Low, But if I had Johnny's pearls, it would be a link
- 29:59with passed and was Johnny. It only meant to me. It's how a
- 30:04woman feels, mister Mollow. I wouldn't blame you for not understanding. Maybe
- 30:10I do, though, So please, mister Mollow, please you'll try to
- 30:14find my pearls. Look, even if it isn't all of them, any
- 30:18part of them, any any single, smallest one of them, it'll be
- 30:23Johnny's. Look. Will you meet me here again around four o'clock I'll be
- 30:29here, Okay, I'll see what I can do. There was only one
- 30:37earthly decent thing I could do. I took Lola's glass pearls to a jeweler
- 30:42and I had him take off the diamond clasp put it on one of those
- 30:47strings of so called simulated pearls that they sell here for three bucks tax included,
- 30:52and I went back to keep my four o'clock date with Lola at the
- 30:55beachcombers. Well, mister Morlow, anything new, Yes, the police found
- 31:02some pearls in Waldo's car. They found pearl No, no, not not
- 31:07exactly, not exactly. Oh, Waldo was getting set to jip yellow.
- 31:11He had the diamond clasp of your necklace attached to a string of cheap imitations,
- 31:17and then you sold the real pearls. Oh oh thanks, are the
- 31:21imitations here? Yes, but it is my clasp. The clasp is real.
- 31:27Is that all right? Yes, it's a class But Johnny Donalds gave
- 31:30me, of course, of course it's all right. Thank you so much.
- 31:38Not ever SI goodbye. Yeah, I think so. You'll never get
- 31:47over Johnny damads. Well, if anybody ever bothers you again, oh well,
- 31:52let me know. Name's Philip Morlow. Mmm. I drove almost to
- 32:04Malibu, and then I parked and walked out on a rock cliff, jetting
- 32:07into the Pacific Ocean. Then I reached in my pocket and dug got the
- 32:12string of Bohemian glass pearls that lieutenanty Barro found in Walder's car, and I
- 32:17cut the knot at one end and slipped the pearls off one by one.
- 32:22One by one, I flipped them into the water. The gulls swooped down
- 32:28on them, and then flapped up again, screaming indignantly. The phony pearls
- 32:32had full. Waller went a little the barceline. But they couldn't fool a
- 32:37seagull, I said to myself, to the memory of Johnny Dalmas, just
- 32:44another for flusher. I listened to a while of the wheeling seagulls. All
- 32:53at once I realized that the wind had died, The satana had blown itself
- 32:57out. The red wind was down. It is over. You have just
- 33:12heard Van Heflin, starring in the first of a new mystery series, Raymond
- 33:15Chandler's Adventures of Philip Marlowe, brought to you by the Lever Brothers Company,

- 34:04good Night. Story on the Adventure of Philip Barlow was based on Red
- 34:06Wind, written by Raymond Chandler, creator of Philipmarlow, the screen's most famous
- 34:10Private Detective, was adapted for radio by Milton Geiger. Heard with Van Hefflin
- 34:16was Loreen Tuttle as Lola Varsay. And this is Wendell Niles inviting you to
- 34:22listen again next week at this same time to another exciting story on the Adventures
- 34:28of Philip Barlow, starring Van Heflin with a distinguished cast. This is NBC,
- 34:35the National Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. There are a few things on
- 34:47this episode. I like how they kind of rolled with the punches versus the
- 34:54expel nation versus the reality of nineteen forty and the explanation and the stories.
- 35:01The ex explanation apparently was a case of subletting for how the person got into
- 35:13Philip Marlowe's building, without Marlowe having any familiarity with him. That was a
- 35:20pretty good explanation in nineteen thirty eight. In nineteen forty seven, we are
- 35:24still in the World War two housing crisis, and that would have been a
- 35:30lot more rare, and they just kind of acknowledged it with a wink and
- 35:32continued on. The overall performance of van Heflin here wasn't necessarily bad, but
- 35:40it was kind of understanding. It almost felt like at times he was trying
- 35:45to almost manufacture the seriousness rather than just really getting into the part, if
- 35:53that makes any sense. The music wasn't as good as I think on the
- 36:00a on the CBS series, though I think they worked pretty well with the
- 36:04wind and sound effects to create that feeling of the story. So overall this
- 36:10this was a decent first episode. And one thing we should be clear on
- 36:16too, because there's the temptation and I've heard people listen and they'll be this
- 36:22assumption about reasons why a series didn't last long or wishing it would have lasted
- 36:30longer. It's helpful to remember that regardless of how Van Heflan did in his
- 36:37performance, this was always going to be just a summer series, particularly with
- 36:43the focus on adapting Raymond Chandler stories, as he didn't have a ton of
- 36:49those to do. Was written and intended for the summer, and even if
- 36:52the series had lasted the past the summer, Helflan would have likely laughed because
- 36:59he still was I'm making some good money in the movies. All right.
