- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look
- 0:05Speaker 1: not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature,
- 0:09Speaker 1: because I have refused him. For the Lord seeth not
- 0:13Speaker 1: as man seeth. For man looketh on the outward appearance,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16.7
- 0:24Speaker 1: Thank you, God, that the same anointing that rested on
- 0:27Speaker 1: David in 1 Samuel 16 is the same anointing that
- 0:30Speaker 1: rests on my life. When men try to overlook me
- 0:35Speaker 1: because of what they perceive as a hindrance, I thank
- 0:38Speaker 1: you that you will anoint me in their presence, because
- 0:41Speaker 1: you determine elevation by the heart. Therefore, keep my heart
- 0:46Speaker 1: pure through all circumstances and seasons of my life, because
- 0:51Speaker 1: this will be the key to my opportunities and advancement.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Just like you strategically placed David in the palace, the
- 1:00Speaker 1: place of his future destiny, I thank you for placing
- 1:03Speaker 1: me in the vicinity of my destiny as well. Father,
- 1:07Speaker 1: you can call upon me because my heart is positioned
- 1:10Speaker 1: to do your will fully and completely. If you anoint
- 1:15Speaker 1: me and choose me, I'll go. Thank you for anointing
- 1:20Speaker 1: me and calling me in the presence of those who
- 1:23Speaker 1: doubt me. In Jesus' name. Amen. Thank you for praying
- 1:31Speaker 1: with me today. Continue listening for an incredible Bible story

- 1:46Speaker 2: David is chosen. In our last story, we learned about
- 1:51Speaker 2: Saul's rejection as king. His pride, greed, and disobedience lost
- 1:56Speaker 2: him the favor of God. Samuel wept over Saul's fall.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Now we will learn about God's new king, chosen not
- 2:04Speaker 2: for his stature or status, but his heart. Inspired by
- 2:09Speaker 2: the book of 1 Samuel.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:16Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In yesterday's story, we saw
- 2:20Speaker 3: how Saul disobeyed God and lied to Samuel when confronted
- 2:24Speaker 3: with his sin. Saul had rejected God and chosen to
- 2:28Speaker 3: exalt himself rather than obey God. As a result, God
- 2:32Speaker 3: tells Saul that he will lose his throne and it
- 2:35Speaker 3: will be given to another. Today, we will hear how
- 2:38Speaker 3: God chooses a young man, a shepherd boy, that nobody
- 2:41Speaker 3: would have expected to be God's pick for such a
- 2:44Speaker 3: mighty king. But this young man had the heart that
- 2:47Speaker 3: God desired in a leader, and he would grow into
- 2:50Speaker 3: the greatest king Israel would ever know. Let's listen now
- 2:55Speaker 3: to today's reading.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Samuel mourned the loss of Saul's soul to the burden
- 3:01Speaker 2: of power. He mourned the state of Israel under a
- 3:05Speaker 2: king with a weakness for status and fame. God came
- 3:08Speaker 2: to Samuel in his mourning and said, Why do you
- 3:11Speaker 2: grieve over Saul? I have rejected him. Go, fill up
- 3:16Speaker 2: your horn with oil and go to the home of
- 3:18Speaker 2: Jesse in Bethlehem. I have provided Israel with a new
- 3:22Speaker 2: king among his sons. Samuel's heart began to pound. Excitement
- 3:27Speaker 2: filled his old bones. He gathered sacrifices to be made
- 3:31Speaker 2: in Bethlehem, for he did not want Saul to know
- 3:34Speaker 2: he was searching for a king. Samuel greeted Jesse. and
- 3:38Speaker 2: the two of them ate together and consecrated the land
- 3:41Speaker 2: for God. Samuel looked at Jesse intently and asked if
- 3:45Speaker 2: he could bring forth his sons. When they came, Samuel
- 3:49Speaker 2: looked at the oldest, Eliab. He was a well-built man, tall, muscular,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and had charismatic qualities that made up a king. Surely
- 3:58Speaker 2: this must be the Lord's anointed, Samuel thought to himself.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Yet God interrupted him and said, Do not look at
- 4:05Speaker 2: his stature or looks, for I do not see as
- 4:08Speaker 2: man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance, but I
- 4:12Speaker 2: look upon the heart. Abinadab came forth before Samuel, and
- 4:17Speaker 2: he too was not the one God had chosen. Seven
- 4:20Speaker 2: more of his sons passed by Samuel, and none of
- 4:23Speaker 2: them were the one God had spoken of. Frustrated and
- 4:27Speaker 2: a bit flustered, Samuel turned to Jesse and said, Are
- 4:30Speaker 2: these all your sons? Jesse scratched his head and said, Well,
- 4:36Speaker 2: there is still the youngest. He is out in the
- 4:38Speaker 2: field tending to the sheep. David was in the fields.
- 4:42Speaker 2: The day was almost over, and the cool spring air
- 4:45Speaker 2: whistled across the grass where the sheep fed. David often
- 4:49Speaker 2: took them to a hill not too far from home,
- 4:51Speaker 2: where he would sit and look at the stars. David
- 4:55Speaker 2: sat in complete peace, but still on alert for any
- 4:58Speaker 2: predators that may lurk around the corner. David took a
- 5:02Speaker 2: deep breath, soaking in the last rays of good sunlight.
- 5:06Speaker 2: As his eyes were closed, he could hear his father's
- 5:08Speaker 2: voice in the distance, beckoning him. Slowly and methodically, David
- 5:13Speaker 2: corralled the sheep and stepped into his father's house. Samuel
- 5:17Speaker 2: was sitting when David entered into the home. He had
- 5:20Speaker 2: a smile on his face. He was a handsome young man,
- 5:23Speaker 2: no older than 17, and had beautiful eyes that made
- 5:26Speaker 2: you feel warm and welcomed. God whispered to Samuel and said, Arise,
- 5:32Speaker 2: for this is my king. So Samuel stood up slowly
- 5:39Speaker 2: and laughed. He looked at David and anointed him with oil.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Samuel did not tell David or Jesse that he was
- 5:45Speaker 2: going to be king of Israel, for he knew that
- 5:48Speaker 2: the Lord would call David in due time. From that
- 5:51Speaker 2: time forward, the Spirit of God was upon David. Weeks
- 5:56Speaker 2: had passed, and Saul was greatly disturbed at night. His
- 6:00Speaker 2: dreams consumed him, and his days were filled with anxiety, paranoia,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and loneliness. God had departed from him, and he could
- 6:08Speaker 2: not bear the sight of himself in the mirror. Saul's
- 6:11Speaker 2: servant saw how tormented he was and offered respite in
- 6:15Speaker 2: the form of music. My lord, the servant said, I
- 6:19Speaker 2: know of a man named Jesse who is in Bethlehem.
- 6:22Speaker 2: His son is very skilled with the lyre and could
- 6:25Speaker 2: possibly offer you rest with his music. So Saul sent
- 6:28Speaker 2: for David, and David served under Saul as his musician
- 6:32Speaker 2: and armor-bearer. Saul grew to love David as a son,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and whenever he was tormented, David would play music and
- 6:40Speaker 2: worship God in his presence. Listening to David's worship was
- 6:44Speaker 2: the closest to God he had felt in months. David
- 6:47Speaker 2: was only a few feet from the throne that God
- 6:50Speaker 2: had called him to sit upon, yet neither him nor
- 6:53Speaker 2: Saul knew that. God was in their midst. He would
- 6:57Speaker 2: raise up David as he once did Moses, Joshua, and
- 7:01Speaker 2: every judge that came before him. David was his chosen hero,
- 7:06Speaker 2: destined to change the course of Israel forever.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Samuel was distraught over Saul's sin and rejection of God's ways.
- 7:18Speaker 3: He took it personally, though it was not him that
- 7:20Speaker 3: Saul had rejected, it was God. This is the same
- 7:24Speaker 3: as when the people rejected God as their king And
- 7:27Speaker 3: Samuel grieved over their demands for a king. Clearly, this
- 7:32Speaker 3: prophet had a heart for his people and a heart
- 7:34Speaker 3: for the Lord. And it saddened him to see the
- 7:37Speaker 3: state of this beloved nation and the leader that God
- 7:40Speaker 3: had appointed. But everything was going just as God had said.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So God told Samuel to dry his tears and to
- 7:47Speaker 3: get his horn ready with anointing oil. The time had
- 7:51Speaker 3: come to choose a new man that God was calling
- 7:55Speaker 3: to the job. He sends Samuel to Jesse, a man
- 7:58Speaker 3: in Bethlehem who has many sons. It was from Jesse's
- 8:02Speaker 3: household that God would call a new king. So Samuel
- 8:05Speaker 3: and Jesse share a meal and consecrate the land. Then
- 8:08Speaker 3: Samuel asked him to call his sons. The oldest is
- 8:12Speaker 3: presented to him. Samuel sees Eliab and is sure this
- 8:16Speaker 3: will be God's pick. But God says to Samuel in
- 8:19Speaker 3: 1 Samuel 16 and verse 7, Do not look on
- 8:22Speaker 3: his appearance or on the height of his stature, because
- 8:26Speaker 3: I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as
- 8:29Speaker 3: man sees. Man looks on the outward appearance, but the
- 8:33Speaker 3: Lord looks on the heart. So one at a time,
- 8:37Speaker 3: six strong young men are presented to Jesse. Each one,
- 8:40Speaker 3: from a human perspective, seems to be fit to be
- 8:43Speaker 3: the king, but God is silent on each of them.
- 8:47Speaker 3: God is far less interested in what seems humanly possible
- 8:51Speaker 3: or logical. God does not need the strongest, or the
- 8:54Speaker 3: brightest to accomplish his purposes. He used Moses, a timid speaker,
- 8:59Speaker 3: to lead the people out of Egypt. He used Joseph,
- 9:01Speaker 3: a prisoner and a slave, to save a nation from starvation.
- 9:05Speaker 3: God looks much deeper for a heart that is willing
- 9:09Speaker 3: and fully committed to him. So Samuel asks if there
- 9:13Speaker 3: are any more sons, and there is just one more.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But he is an unlikely choice. David wasn't even present
- 9:20Speaker 3: during the survey of the previous sons. He was a
- 9:23Speaker 3: young lad that was out tending the sheep in the field.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Samuel says he wants to see him too, so he
- 9:29Speaker 3: sent for David. The moment David enters, God tells Samuel
- 9:34Speaker 3: to arise and anoint him because he is the one
- 9:37Speaker 3: that God has chosen. Samuel does just as he is instructed,
- 9:41Speaker 3: and from that day on, God's spirit was upon David.
- 9:45Speaker 3: This unlikely king was now the man who had a
- 9:49Speaker 3: heart for God to lead the nations. Meanwhile, Saul was
- 9:53Speaker 3: battling a tormented mind. God's presence had left him, and
- 9:56Speaker 3: without God's presence, Saul was a man without any peace.
- 10:01Speaker 3: So his servants told him of a young man who
- 10:03Speaker 3: played the harp, the son of a man named Jesse.
- 10:07Speaker 3: So David, now the anointed king, still a young man,
- 10:12Speaker 3: a shepherd boy, was called to play for Saul, and
- 10:16Speaker 3: the music soothed and calmed the king. David remained with
- 10:20Speaker 3: Saul in his service, and of course that seems to
- 10:23Speaker 3: be an unlikely path for the next king to take,
- 10:26Speaker 3: but God was at work and his purposes are being fulfilled.
- 10:30Speaker 3: This was just the beginning. Soon David would conquer more
- 10:34Speaker 3: than the evil spirits that tormented Saul. He would slay
- 10:37Speaker 3: a giant that struck fear in all of Israel, and
- 10:41Speaker 3: we'll tell that story the next time. Dear God, Thank
- 10:45Speaker 3: you for the story of David, that you seek people
- 10:48Speaker 3: like him after your own heart. God, that you will
