Transcript
- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13And I'm your host, Will Walden. There's a company called BYD, or
- 0:17BIDE for short. It's a huge automotive company,
- 0:21and it's on the verge of surpassing Tesla as a global
- 0:26leader in EV sales. Now, this is a huge change in
- 0:30the EV market, and this means that China is increasing its
- 0:34influence in the global automotive sector.
- 0:37Now, despite the dominance of established auto brands like
- 0:40Toyota, Volkswagen, General Motors, Chinese companies,
- 0:44notably BYD and SAIC Motor Corp have made significant strides in
- 0:49the industry. Now, China has recently
- 0:51surpassed the United States, South Korea and Germany in
- 0:54passenger car exports, contending with Japan for the
- 0:57global lead. Now this is attributed to the
- 1:00aggressive expansion of Chinese manufacturers in the EV world.
- 1:04It's no longer about the size or the legacy of the company, but
- 1:07rather the speed of innovation and iteration.
- 1:11BYDS proactive approach has set a new pace in the industry,
- 1:14compelling others to accelerate their own advancements, And the
- 1:18competition between Tesla's Elon Musk and Byds Wang is becoming
- 1:23increasingly evident. Musk's concerns over
- 1:26affordability contrast with Wang's aggressive marketing of
- 1:30more affordable models. Now this competition is
- 1:33reshaping the EV market, with VYD offering a broader range of
- 1:37accessible vehicles now. Musk acknowledged the
- 1:40competitiveness of their vehicles, a significant shift
- 1:42from his previous dismissive stance of the company.
- 1:46Now this change is due to BYDS remarkable progress in the EV
- 1:51sector, a realization of Wang's long term vision for the
- 1:54company, and despite Bide's domestic success, the company
- 1:58faces challenges in international markets.
- 2:01Trade tensions and potential tariffs in Europe and the US
- 2:04complicated global expansion. Now this is about geopolitical
- 2:08challenges that Chinese automakers face and exporting
- 2:11their models to foreign markets. Now this could be solved if they
- 2:15make plants in the United States or in Europe because they don't
- 2:19have to import anything to those countries.
- 2:21Then now, Wang, unlike Musk, maintains a low profile,
- 2:24avoiding social media and public appearances.
- 2:27However, his statements about Chinese brands challenging the
- 2:30status quo in the auto industry shows that he's confident in
- 2:34Byd's capabilities and the potential of the Chinese EV
- 2:37market. Warren Buffett has a stake in
- 2:39this, too. Berkshire Hathaway recognized
- 2:41Byd's potential early, investing significantly in the company.
- 2:45The payoff was substantial, reflecting the company's growth
- 2:48and success in the EV market. And Charlie Munger, the late
- 2:52Vice Chairman of Berkshire viewed BYD primarily as a
- 2:55strategic battery investment praised the company's focus on
- 2:59crucial technological advancements in the EV sector,
- 3:02which has been pivotal in its growth.
- 3:05And Bide's journey began with the acquisition of a falling
- 3:08state owned automaker and the launch of its first plug in
- 3:11hybrid, the F3 DM. Early government subsidies and
- 3:15BYDS unique position as a battery manufacturer aided its
- 3:19growth in the nascent EV market. Mugger lauded Wang's leadership
- 3:23and engineering focus at BIDE, which played a crucial role in
- 3:27the company's development. This approach differentiated
- 3:29BIDE from its competitors and has been a key factor in the
- 3:33success of the company, And Bide's hiring of international
- 3:36talents such as Wolfgang, Edgar and other notable designers
- 3:39marked a shift in its approach to car design and quality.
- 3:43This move help the company transition from producing basic
- 3:45models to more sophisticated competition is fueled by
- 3:49government subsidies here and has been a major driver of
- 3:52innovation in China's EV market. This intense competitive
- 3:55environment is expected to propel Chinese manufacturers to
- 3:59a significant global market share by the end of the decade.
- 4:02And although Tesla currently surpasses BIDE in several
- 4:05financial metrics, analyst predicts that BIDE will close
- 4:08these gaps significantly in the near future.
- 4:10Now, this projection is based on the company's continued growth
- 4:13and innovation. Now, Wang's personal journey,
- 4:16though from a humble background to becoming a billionaire,
- 4:19mirrors kind of the rise of Biden.
- 4:22He has a relentless pursuit of growth and innovation, and it's
- 4:26been integral in Bide's success in its expansion in the global
- 4:30market. Now, Bide's strategy for
- 4:32maintaining its leadership position involves focusing on
- 4:34advanced tech, including automated driving technologies.
- 4:38However, the company faces very stiff competition for both
- 4:41established and emerging players in the EV market, such as Rivian
- 4:45and Tesla, of course. And Wang's response to whether
- 4:48BIDE could rival Toyota highlights the fluid nature of
- 4:51the EV industry. Its success will depend on
- 4:53technological advancement and market responsiveness.
- 4:56Move really fast, get these things out there as fast as
- 5:00possible and new tech to the market before anybody else.
- 5:03And this is how BIDE will maintain its competitive edge
- 5:07over companies like Tesla. And as BIDE assumes the leading
- 5:10position in the EV market, overtaking Tesla, it faces the
- 5:14challenges of reinventing itself over and over to stay ahead,
- 5:18constantly innovating. And this requires a shift in
- 5:21strategy from being a challenger to setting new benchmarks in the
- 5:24industry being better than everybody else constantly.
- 5:29Now they have an ability to innovate and adapt, and that
- 5:33will be crucial in defining its future trajectory in defeating
- 5:37Tesla to be the number one selling EV brand in the world.
