- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcast.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Episode number 95 of NHL Unscripted coming at you. And
- 0:25Speaker 1: maybe the dog days of August, we still got hockey
- 0:27Speaker 1: to talk about. Major flowers. For Connor McDavid. Flowers for
- 0:32Speaker 1: Joe Pavelski. Also, who doesn't love their rankings? NHL.com ranking
- 0:36Speaker 1: top 20 centers. Also, since we discussed previously defensemen and wingers,
- 0:41Speaker 1: they're also doing top 10 goalies.
- 0:42Speaker 2: That's a fun conversation to have as well.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Cinefile in 60, a couple of big buzzy movies. The
- 0:46Speaker 1: Invite starring Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde. The Drama, which is
- 0:50Speaker 1: now streaming, starring Robert Pattinson and Zendaya. Plus, is the
- 0:54Speaker 1: price is right when it comes to the Montreal Canadiens?
- 0:56Speaker 1: We'll talk about the Ring of Honor there as well.
- 0:58Speaker 1: We'll get to J.D. 's ball hockey tournament in just
- 1:00Speaker 1: a second, but I just got back from the U.S.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Open last night.
- 1:03Speaker 3: The U.S.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Open officially begins next week, but last it was watching
- 1:06Speaker 1: Field of Dreams, the tennis version. It was the great
- 1:09Speaker 1: major stars of the game back again at Arthur Ashe,
- 1:12Speaker 1: including my favorite tennis player, the incomparable Roger Federer. So
- 1:16Speaker 1: they dubbed it as Federer, an icon, says goodbye to
- 1:18Speaker 1: New York. He had not played the U.S. Open since 2019.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But vintage Fed comes out there, looks the exact same.
- 1:24Speaker 1: And it was him versus Andy Roddick, singles. And I
- 1:27Speaker 1: paid an outrageous sum, J.D., of course, but I was like,
- 1:29Speaker 1: it's better. I'll pay whatever price it takes. And my
- 1:31Speaker 1: son and I had good seats.
- 1:32Speaker 2: We're like, you know, lower bowl.
- 1:33Speaker 1: But still outrageously priced. And I'm thinking to myself, it's
- 1:35Speaker 1: an exhibition tournament. These guys are not going to go
- 1:37Speaker 1: all out.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You know what this is like. How much were they?
- 1:40Speaker 2: Take a guess.
- 1:40Speaker 1: For a price of two, it was lower bowl-wise. It's
- 1:44Speaker 1: near the top of lower bowl.
- 1:46Speaker 2: A grant, $ 1, 000 each? Good guess.
- 1:47Speaker 1: $ 7. 84.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You throw in the parking for $ 40. A couple pizza.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Coke is $ 9 for a fountain soda.
- 1:56Speaker 2: I found that particularly outrageous. They bend you over with
- 1:59Speaker 2: the concessions. Concessions are... I have such a vendetta against concessions.
- 2:07Speaker 2: That's not too bad for Federer and Roddick.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I want to continue on the vendetta, because to your point,
- 2:12Speaker 1: if you said $ 7. 84 for a pair of tickets to
- 2:14Speaker 1: watch your favorite tennis player who hasn't been at the
- 2:15Speaker 1: court in seven years, I'm like, yeah, no, sold.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'll pay the price. It's fine. They're great seats, and
- 2:19Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 2:20Speaker 1: If you say $ 19 margarita pizza, I'm like, that's where
- 2:23Speaker 1: I get upset. I'm like, that's outrageous. You can charge $ 10, okay?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Because we know we can go get 99-cent pizza.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It's the same thing. But you can charge me $ 7.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I'll take it.
- 2:31Speaker 1: $ 19 and the $ 9 fountain coke. Later on, had to
- 2:37Speaker 1: get a snack, $ 9 ice cream sandwiches. What does the
- 2:39Speaker 1: world come to? As far as the tennis is concerned,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the singles was the best part because it was Federer,
- 2:44Speaker 1: Roddick going home.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I'm like, listen, dude, Roddick can still serve.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm looking up, I'm like, oh my God, 128 miles
- 2:50Speaker 1: an hour on that serve.
- 2:51Speaker 2: This guy's 43.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It's ridiculous. And Federer, like at times, I wish they
- 2:55Speaker 1: had been mic'd. Maybe he gets a little too gimmicky,
- 2:57Speaker 1: but like Roddick was still playing for the crowd. So
- 2:59Speaker 1: a couple of times, Federer would go, come on, like,
- 3:01Speaker 1: let's go.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Like, come on, dude. Like just complaining, that mock outrage.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But even you can see Federer laughing and smiling because
- 3:07Speaker 1: some of these servers are like, dude, Andy's still got it.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And they would do like the in-court interviews. Malik Andrews
- 3:11Speaker 1: was there, James Blake.
- 3:12Speaker 2: And he was like, I haven't seen a server like
- 3:13Speaker 2: that in a while.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Andy's still got it. So maybe they play half hour.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Federer wins 6-3.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Awesome. Vintage Fed. One-handed backhand. Still looks great. And they
- 3:20Speaker 2: take a little break.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Now it's the double serve when you go, uh-oh. Again,
- 3:23Speaker 1: put this in hockey terms. Imagine a player in his mid-60s.
- 3:27Speaker 1: That's John McEnroe trying out there at 66. I'm like, oh, God.
- 3:31Speaker 1: What is Johnny Mac going to provide?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Him and Federer? Against everyone's favorite, Andre Agassi. Andre, back
- 3:37Speaker 2: at the US Open. I'm like, oh my God. Now,
- 3:38Speaker 2: Andre's in his mid-50s.
- 3:40Speaker 1: If I were to tell you, so we already know
- 3:41Speaker 1: Federer and Roddick looked awesome because we just saw them
- 3:43Speaker 1: in the singles.
- 3:44Speaker 2: But no, these guys can still play. Look great. Who
- 3:46Speaker 2: do you think did better?
- 3:46Speaker 1: 66-year-old John McEnroe or 56-year-old Andre Agassi?
- 3:51Speaker 2: McEnroe, no?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Nailed it.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Mack looked great.
- 3:54Speaker 3: I was like, are you kidding?
- 3:54Speaker 1: He was in the same team as Federer? Still that
- 3:57Speaker 1: great volley, good net skills.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And as you know, it doubles. It's serve, return, volley,
- 4:02Speaker 2: or smash. That's it. It's a very quick point. Boom, boom, boom, bam.
- 4:05Speaker 2: And Johnny Mac's still quick, reacts. I'm like, this guy's awesome. Agassi,
- 4:09Speaker 2: I'm sad to report. Struggling early.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Now, he improved as the match went on, but when
- 4:14Speaker 1: he had to serve, JD, one fault.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Okay, that's fine. Roddick faults, Federer faults. Second fault. So
- 4:19Speaker 2: that should be a point. Agassi goes, no, no, no,
- 4:21Speaker 2: I'm going again. All right. Third fault. fourth fault like
- 4:25Speaker 2: oh my god buddy.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Do it i just just get the ball in it's
- 4:27Speaker 1: okay so eventually the fifth fault like he lobs it
- 4:30Speaker 1: and federer mock jokingly does like oh pretends it just
- 4:33Speaker 1: gives him the point like all right i guess he's
- 4:34Speaker 1: back thank you for redeeming himself a bit but it
- 4:37Speaker 1: made me think of you it made me think of
- 4:38Speaker 1: all the great athletes i work with and again we'll
- 4:40Speaker 1: get to your ball hockey in a second there will
- 4:42Speaker 1: come a time where you go hey i know this
- 4:44Speaker 1: is for fun but i'm kind of embarrassing myself out
- 4:47Speaker 1: here like i don't want to be the guy that
- 4:48Speaker 1: sucks and everyone's like hey andre agassi could have practiced
- 4:51Speaker 1: a little bit more yeah Really cool tournament. Thank God
- 4:54Speaker 1: Federer and McEnroe won, like, deservedly. Really cool time. Really
- 4:57Speaker 1: special moment. So I'm glad I got to experience it.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Ball hockey for you.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I saw some of the videos sent. You were sniping.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I mean, for a defenseman, you were an offensive force
- 5:05Speaker 2: out there. I don't know if I'd call it that.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I'm still sore. My calves, my feet, my knees, my back.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I didn't think I could be that sore, but, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: the network kind of, Steve Tranzano and all his glory
- 5:23Speaker 2: was like, Hey, you know, there's this NBHL and national
- 5:26Speaker 2: ball hockey league. And do you want to go play
- 5:28Speaker 2: in it? We'll make you up. You'll do some interviews,
- 5:31Speaker 2: you know, kind of cross promotion. And I was like, yeah, sure.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You know what? No worries whatsoever. I'll go there, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 2: maybe pass the ball around a little, take a couple
- 5:38Speaker 2: of slap shots, interview some guys. And, uh, that'll be there.
- 5:43Speaker 2: That'll be at, you know, and learn about the rules
- 5:45Speaker 2: and kind of do like a cutesy little video. And,
- 5:48Speaker 2: and I get there and I was the first, overall pick.
- 5:52Speaker 2: It was a draft tournament. I walk in there, and
- 5:55Speaker 2: they're like, no, you're playing three games Saturday, and then
- 6:00Speaker 2: if you go to the semi, and then it's everybody
- 6:02Speaker 2: makes it to the semis and the finals, so you
- 6:03Speaker 2: could play a potential five fucking games in two days. Whoa.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And I get out there, and I'm, like, expected to dominate. Like,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I'm told by my team, like, you got to go.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Right.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Like, we got to win, and then... You're going to
- 6:20Speaker 2: be Bobby Orr out there. And then I'm like, no, no,
- 6:24Speaker 2: we're just going to mess around, right? And they're like, no, no,
- 6:26Speaker 2: we've got to win this thing. And then naturally, I
- 6:30Speaker 2: don't have exactly what the agassi, the embarrassed side. I'm like,
- 6:37Speaker 2: these kids are buzzing around. First game, we're out there, okay?
- 6:41Speaker 2: And I'm like, I'm going to take it easy. First game,
- 6:42Speaker 2: we're out there. We get dropped 8-0. Absolutely dropped. There's
- 6:47Speaker 2: like four kids on the team that play for Team USA. Okay.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And I got a ton of respect for these guys.
- 6:52Speaker 2: They're some good players. So I'm sitting there after, and
- 6:56Speaker 2: we got drubbed 8-0, and I'm like, fuck this. Like,
- 6:59Speaker 2: I got to go. And I got to go pedal
- 7:02Speaker 2: to the metal here. And we end up... We won
- 7:05Speaker 2: the next, like, three games. Yes! Demers carries the team
- 7:09Speaker 2: on his back. We made it back to the finals, but,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you know, we had a ragtag bunch of... A team
- 7:15Speaker 2: that we kind of, you know, piecemealed together. And the
- 7:18Speaker 2: team we were playing, like, somehow... like six of them
- 7:20Speaker 2: play together year round. So like we got to the
- 7:23Speaker 2: finals against the same team and got shellacked, but it's
- 7:26Speaker 2: a great product. Like it took me back nostalgia. Why,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, I used to play that, you know, in
- 7:31Speaker 2: the streets of Montreal when I was 15 years old
- 7:34Speaker 2: and you'd play no shin pads, you know, no gloves,
- 7:37Speaker 2: you'd be hacking and whacking and be dirty. You know,
- 7:40Speaker 2: there'd be fights. Like it was so much fun. So
- 7:43Speaker 2: it took me back and it was, it kind of
- 7:44Speaker 2: gave me that, that little bit of a reminiscing about
- 7:47Speaker 2: the good old days, but yeah, it was fun. It's
- 7:50Speaker 2: crazy how big this league is. It's an amazing league
- 7:54Speaker 2: run by this great group of young guys that started
- 7:57Speaker 2: this during COVID, the NBHL. I mean, check them out.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It's amazing. They're growing fast. It was well done, and
- 8:05Speaker 2: they got some good content because I got to go
- 8:07Speaker 2: put up a hat trick, and that was the game
- 8:09Speaker 2: they were filming, and I was fucking living large, baby.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Still got it. That's all that matters.
- 8:15Speaker 1: When the lights were largest, Jason Demers delivered.
- 8:18Speaker 2: That's it. You turn them on, I'm there. But I
- 8:20Speaker 2: tell you what, when I was walking through the airport
- 8:22Speaker 2: with Jill, heading back home, I looked like I was
- 8:26Speaker 2: 80 years old. I looked like Andre Agassi on the
- 8:28Speaker 2: tennis court. I'm still sore. It's three days later. I'm
- 8:32Speaker 2: still sore. The first thing Americans will ask you, Tal,
- 8:35Speaker 2: do you play hockey?
- 8:36Speaker 1: And I always say, well, we all played at one
- 8:38Speaker 1: point growing up, but the great separator is how good
- 8:40Speaker 1: a skater you are. And if you weren't a good
- 8:41Speaker 1: skater like me, then very quickly you become a ball
- 8:44Speaker 1: hockey guy, road hockey, floor hockey, just other forms of hockey.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So to JD's point, like tomorrow he said let's go
- 8:50Speaker 1: on the ice i know i suck but if you
- 8:51Speaker 1: said what grab a stick of course tal no one's
- 8:53Speaker 1: saying no to a game of ball it's great.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Absolutely no i think we all have a fond at
- 8:58Speaker 4: least growing up in canada we all have a fond
- 9:00Speaker 4: uh memory of playing some ball hockey you know if
- 9:03Speaker 4: you knew a kid i remember if you knew a
- 9:05Speaker 4: kid who lived in a cul-de-sac that was gold oh
- 9:07Speaker 4: right a kid car yeah yeah well you didn't have
- 9:10Speaker 4: to worry about cars as much if it was a
- 9:12Speaker 4: cul-de-sac wayne's world wayne's world yeah car I think Wayne's
- 9:15Speaker 4: World cemented the legacy of ball hockey with that awesome scene. Actually,
- 9:20Speaker 4: when I was in New York, they had a roller
- 9:22Speaker 4: hockey league at Chelsea Piers.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Back in the day.
- 9:26Speaker 4: And we shut it down. We won the last championship
- 9:29Speaker 4: in that league before they converted the roller hockey rink
- 9:32Speaker 4: into a skate park.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Oh, are you a roller hockey guy? Back in the day.
- 9:36Speaker 4: That's great.
- 9:38Speaker 2: That's difficult, too. When you go out and play that,
- 9:41Speaker 2: that's not easy, either.
- 9:42Speaker 3: That was fun.
- 9:43Speaker 2: It was fun.
- 9:43Speaker 4: We had a good group of guys. Big up to
- 9:45Speaker 4: the Royal Elks wherever you are. I don't know what
- 9:47Speaker 4: ever happened to these guys, but we had a good time.
- 9:49Speaker 4: We won the last title that they ever had at Chelsea.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Nice. I agree. We had a good time. Rollerblading takes
- 9:55Speaker 2: some skill.
- 9:55Speaker 1: We've got to get Gabe Polsky back here, our most
- 9:57Speaker 1: popular guest ever. I know he definitely still plays hockey
- 10:00Speaker 1: to some day. We'll get him on a little ball
- 10:01Speaker 1: hockey with JD. Could be a rigger out there.
- 10:04Speaker 2: What did we get, like 30,000 downloads on that one?
- 10:08Speaker 2: Something like that. Had to be. My heart was happy
- 10:09Speaker 2: with that one. Breaking records. All right, let's get into
- 10:12Speaker 2: the hockey news.
- 10:13Speaker 1: So NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said last week the
- 10:15Speaker 1: league could welcome, ready for it, a 33rd franchise. Coming
- 10:19Speaker 1: to Texas in the near future, Dailies of the League
- 10:21Speaker 1: could announce a team in Houston or Austin.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Let's go Austin. Keep it weird.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Before the end of the year, meaning the new franchise
- 10:27Speaker 1: could start play as soon as the 2029-2030 season, Houston
- 10:30Speaker 1: billionaire Dan Friedkin has reportedly agreed to pay the $ 2
- 10:34Speaker 1: billion expansion fee. The league is in talks with two
- 10:37Speaker 1: other groups regarding a 34th NHL franchise. I always am
- 10:42Speaker 1: of two minds, Judy. When I hear expansion, I go,
- 10:44Speaker 1: it's always good to have more money coming in and
- 10:47Speaker 1: you get more players, and that's good for employment as
- 10:49Speaker 1: everyone has more jobs.
- 10:50Speaker 2: But I always say to myself, well, how much more
- 10:52Speaker 2: are we going to dilute the league?
- 10:53Speaker 1: I'm not going to be that old fossil saying I
- 10:55Speaker 1: missed the league of 21 teams, but not necessarily the
- 10:59Speaker 1: more the merrier. Having said that, Houston is a major market.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I mean, fourth biggest population in America. It's kind of
- 11:04Speaker 1: shocking they don't have a hockey team. I'm big on Austin's.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It's highly growing.
- 11:07Speaker 1: If I said to you, hockey in Houston, your reaction is?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I mean, the AHL team there, the Arrows were there,
- 11:14Speaker 2: and I played there when I was my first year.
- 11:17Speaker 2: They had a big old rink, and I think Houston
- 11:20Speaker 2: is the logical choice. A $ 2 billion price tag is
- 11:24Speaker 2: fucking crazy, and I never would have thought the NHL
- 11:28Speaker 2: would have gotten there. So congrats to Gary Bettman and
- 11:33Speaker 2: the league for getting that kind of evaluation. Now, I'm
- 11:39Speaker 2: with you. I don't love the dilution of the league.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I already think there is a big difference between the
- 11:47Speaker 2: good teams and the bad teams right now in the NHL.
- 11:49Speaker 2: And I think there's a lot of teams that are
- 11:51Speaker 2: struggling to find players. And maybe, listen, you look at
- 11:56Speaker 2: the UFA board that's out there right now, and maybe
- 11:59Speaker 2: it's going to increase the number of 34 to 36-year-olds
- 12:02Speaker 2: that are kind of not getting paid and not getting
- 12:06Speaker 2: these one-year deals. And it might keep those guys in
- 12:08Speaker 2: the league for a couple more years. So that could,
- 12:10Speaker 2: that's going to be a good thing. Employment. I like that. Um,
- 12:14Speaker 2: I think Houston's going to do great. I think the
- 12:15Speaker 2: rivalry with Dallas will be fricking fantastic. Um, I think
- 12:20Speaker 2: it's positioned in a great market. You know, I, I,
- 12:24Speaker 2: I've heard through the grapevine that like, eventually we're looking
- 12:26Speaker 2: to get to like 36, which is like crazy to
- 12:29Speaker 2: me to even think, you know, and, and, uh, if
- 12:33Speaker 2: that's true and, and you know, I'm in Arizona, so
- 12:37Speaker 2: I do think there's a world Arizona gets a team back.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I can't imagine they don't the way they're growing. I
- 12:42Speaker 2: think it's down the line, but you know, Austin, I
- 12:45Speaker 2: don't quite know about, I think it'll make a great
- 12:48Speaker 2: trifecta for Texas teams. It'll be great. But then it's like,
- 12:52Speaker 2: who do you move out of the central? Because then
- 12:55Speaker 2: you got these three teams in the central. I think
- 12:57Speaker 2: they'd probably move out. What Chicago would go to the,
- 13:00Speaker 2: chicago would end up going to the metropolitan or the
- 13:02Speaker 2: atlantic right and yeah i would think either one yeah
- 13:05Speaker 2: yeah so you'd have chicago would move out and then
- 13:09Speaker 2: maybe winnipeg you know maybe winnipeg being all the way
- 13:13Speaker 2: up north like that maybe they would go over to
- 13:15Speaker 2: the atlantic or something or the metro so i don't
- 13:17Speaker 2: know how they're going to do it to even out
- 13:19Speaker 2: the the standings but yeah i listen it's it's exciting
- 13:24Speaker 2: you know the i think The league is in a
- 13:27Speaker 2: classic position of striking while the iron's hot. They're doing
- 13:30Speaker 2: a great job of it ever since the Olympics. I mean,
- 13:33Speaker 2: hockey's just, we're back, baby. We are freaking back. The
- 13:38Speaker 2: MLB's about to go into a year-long lockout, and players
- 13:41Speaker 2: are going to get absolutely filleted. And hockey's kind of this,
- 13:47Speaker 2: we're just floating through, and I think we're just building
- 13:50Speaker 2: the right way.
- 13:52Speaker 1: It is a good point, a counterpoint of Major League
- 13:54Speaker 1: Baseball facing a very crippling lockout in hockey. He's like,
- 13:57Speaker 1: we got labor peace for years. It was like the
- 13:58Speaker 1: quietest thing. When it's the NHL, NHL, like, yeah, we're good.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Another five more years, ratify, like, no problem. Like, there's
- 14:04Speaker 1: no issues at all, which is a real credit to
- 14:05Speaker 1: Kerry Bettman and the NHL. They seem to get along
- 14:07Speaker 1: on the same page and see things the right way.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So that could be capping sooner rather than later. Meantime,
- 14:13Speaker 1: it may sound familiar, but the Ducks are having some
- 14:14Speaker 1: problems signing a young star forward. After already going through
- 14:17Speaker 1: the Leo Carlson offer sheet, the Flyers try to give
- 14:20Speaker 1: him that massive deal. The Ducks apparently matched it then Now,
- 14:22Speaker 1: they reportedly offered Cutter Gauthier, former Flyer, four-year contract extension
- 14:26Speaker 1: to pay him an average annual value.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Of $ 13 million. To me, I'm like, that's pretty good.
- 14:30Speaker 2: 13 times four. You know what he said? I'm good, thanks.
- 14:33Speaker 1: 22 years of age, Cutter Gauthier's like, that's not going
- 14:35Speaker 1: to cut it. So with camp coming up, potential holdout
- 14:38Speaker 1: from the star-scoring winner, which would not bode well for
- 14:40Speaker 1: the Ducks, who are no stranger to holdouts. 2023, Trevor
- 14:43Speaker 1: Zegers skipped training camp for signing extension with Anaheim. They
- 14:46Speaker 1: trade him less than two years later to Philadelphia. Last year,
- 14:49Speaker 1: Mason McTavish skipped part of training camp before signing his extension,
- 14:52Speaker 1: only for the Ducks to trade him to the Blues
- 14:54Speaker 1: less than a year later. How concerned should it be?
- 14:56Speaker 1: This is a team you like a lot, J.D. You said, hey,
- 14:58Speaker 1: watch out for the Ducks. You said this a year ago.
- 15:00Speaker 1: A team on the rise, great young talent. How big
- 15:02Speaker 1: an issue is this that they can't sign Cutter Gauthier?
- 15:05Speaker 2: Well, I said it. I called it last year, them
- 15:07Speaker 2: making the playoffs and them being dangerous. They were. I'm
- 15:12Speaker 2: calling that they're going to miss the playoffs. And this
- 15:16Speaker 2: is not too early to call. I don't know what
- 15:19Speaker 2: they're fucking doing there. You know, and maybe it was
- 15:24Speaker 2: just hamstrung by the Leo Carlson negotiation, but the way
- 15:30Speaker 2: they negotiate and the way that Pat for beak negotiates,
- 15:33Speaker 2: I think is an old school way. And not to
- 15:37Speaker 2: say it's wrong. I don't think it's wrong. I think
- 15:40Speaker 2: it's just the way that it's things have been done,
- 15:42Speaker 2: but players have way too much power now. Guys are
- 15:45Speaker 2: all communicating with each other. Everybody knows everything. All the agencies.
- 15:49Speaker 2: We're getting to that point of like because hockey is
- 15:53Speaker 2: getting a lot bigger and these young kids are commanding
- 15:55Speaker 2: more power. We're getting to that NFL area where it's
- 15:57Speaker 2: like it's really the GMs lose all fucking legs to
- 16:03Speaker 2: stand down with any of these top guys. And they
- 16:06Speaker 2: just got to pay to play. And I just don't think.
- 16:08Speaker 2: $ 13 million is going to cut it with Cutter Goats
- 16:11Speaker 2: here right now, and I think he's probably closer in
- 16:14Speaker 2: the $ 15 million, $ 16 million range. They've got to get
- 16:16Speaker 2: him done. They have no decor. They also have an
- 16:20Speaker 2: aging group of guys that are potentially gone in the
- 16:24Speaker 2: next year or so. Granlund's got two years left at
- 16:27Speaker 2: $ 7 million. Kreider's up after this year. Killorn's up after
- 16:31Speaker 2: this year. Vetrano, they're probably going to try to move.
- 16:34Speaker 2: So you've got some money coming off the books here,
- 16:37Speaker 2: which is like a positive. So to me, I think
- 16:41Speaker 2: it'll get done. But again, 18 to Leo, 15 to Cutter,
- 16:47Speaker 2: you got to get really creative with what you're bringing
- 16:50Speaker 2: up through the pipeline. And, you know, when I'm looking
- 16:53Speaker 2: at this, I think it's going to be a tough
- 16:56Speaker 2: year this year for them. I do think so. I
- 16:58Speaker 2: think they'll bounce back, but I think this year is
- 17:00Speaker 2: going to be really, really tough. And, you know, Danny
- 17:03Speaker 2: Breer somewhere is sitting, Watching this all unfold, butt naked,
- 17:07Speaker 2: eating a pizza, and just pleasuring himself to the fact
- 17:14Speaker 2: that he just absolutely fucked him over.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Cutter Goetje didn't want to play for the Flyers. I'm
- 17:20Speaker 2: going to screw you guys over now. Watch this. Yeah. Hey,
- 17:23Speaker 2: talk about your all-time vendettas. 100%. Hey, talk about a
- 17:28Speaker 2: guy that holds a grudge. I love that. French Canadians.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Danny B. Danny B. As you said, Leo 18.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So theoretically, 15 gets it done for Cutter.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Four times 15, so.
- 17:40Speaker 1: You're right, $ 33.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Million going to two guys.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I mean, that's going to take some creativity, as you
- 17:45Speaker 1: would put it, for the rest of the way, especially,
- 17:47Speaker 1: as you said, with.
- 17:47Speaker 2: The young D chords. It'll be interesting. By the way,
- 17:51Speaker 2: our special guest is Robert Smigel.
- 17:52Speaker 1: This is one of the funniest guys ever in Hollywood,
- 17:54Speaker 1: one of the all-time great comedy writers ever. He has
- 17:56Speaker 1: an awesome new podcast you guys should all check out.
- 17:58Speaker 1: He talks some hockey with us. He's a legit hockey fan,
- 18:01Speaker 1: Rangers Islanders, worked on Saturday Night Live for years, has
- 18:04Speaker 1: stories of when Gretzky was there as a guest host
- 18:07Speaker 1: and obviously a big Knicks guy as well.
- 18:08Speaker 2: So Smigel's coming up, and he's awesome. You guys are
- 18:10Speaker 2: really going to enjoy him. In the meantime, more hockey news.
- 18:13Speaker 1: A few weeks ago, you mentioned Drake Batherson, potential captain
- 18:16Speaker 1: for the Sens. It looks like the Sens might have
- 18:18Speaker 1: trouble retaining one of their top young players again. Career
- 18:21Speaker 1: highs last season, 33 goals, 71 points, UFA in 2027.
- 18:26Speaker 1: 28-year-olds do a major raise. He made just under $ 5
- 18:28Speaker 1: million this past year. Hasn't signed an extension yet. Ottawa
- 18:31Speaker 1: has until September 16th to sign him to an eight-year deal.
- 18:35Speaker 1: After that, the new CBA kicks in. Seven years is
- 18:38Speaker 1: the max.
- 18:39Speaker 2: We're at all summer.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Two sides not close. He could get $ 10 million a year.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I know Ottawa Senators fans, this is the last thing
- 18:45Speaker 1: they want to hear. But could we see, after training
- 18:47Speaker 1: Brady Kachuk, and maybe it's not the same level, but
- 18:50Speaker 1: it's a major distraction if Drake Bathurston can't get signed
- 18:53Speaker 1: and then they've got to flip him.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think they're going to– that one I'm
- 18:59Speaker 2: a lot more bullish on. I don't think they're going
- 19:01Speaker 2: to let that slide. I think Drake's a very good,
- 19:04Speaker 2: unique player that if they lost him, he's going to
- 19:07Speaker 2: go flourish somewhere else. So they're going to get it done.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I think he's very underrated around the league. I think
- 19:13Speaker 2: he's still coming in his own. He's going to become
- 19:15Speaker 2: a big leader for this team. On the ice, just
- 19:19Speaker 2: the way he plays and plays hard, plays physical– plays
- 19:24Speaker 2: both sides of the puck, so to me, they're going
- 19:26Speaker 2: to get this done. They're going to get the eight-year done.
- 19:28Speaker 2: If not, it'll be seven, but I think they'll find
- 19:31Speaker 2: a way to make this work, and they're leaking oil
- 19:35Speaker 2: with the Brady-Kachuk thing, but again, this is kind of
- 19:38Speaker 2: one of those things where I think the Brady-Kachuk thing
- 19:40Speaker 2: might galvanize the guys a little bit, might get them
- 19:45Speaker 2: pulling together, and we can see this team kind of
- 19:48Speaker 2: surprising people early in the season. I don't know if
- 19:49Speaker 2: the last all year, but Brady's going to have to
- 19:53Speaker 2: see these guys quite a bit being in the Atlantic division. So,
- 19:56Speaker 2: you know, for me, Drake Batherson, I do think they'll
- 19:59Speaker 2: get it done. If they have to overpay him, it's okay.
- 20:03Speaker 2: But I think Drake over 10, 11 million is worth it.
- 20:07Speaker 2: He's going to be a good player. Caps going up.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I just think it's, it's a logical choice for me.
- 20:11Speaker 2: So I'm not, I'm not too worried about it for sure.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Brady Kachuk and the Panthers making the return to Ottawa centers.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You can see it in Canada on Amazon Prime.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I'll be there. I cannot wait to.
- 20:19Speaker 3: See the environment.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Are you back? Is there an announcement?
- 20:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Amazon, we're back for another season, which is great news.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So it's going to be great. Me and I assume
- 20:28Speaker 1: the entire crew, I haven't heard officially, but Johnny Forsen's
- 20:30Speaker 1: got to be on the call.
- 20:31Speaker 2: We love Forsy.
- 20:32Speaker 1: And when I looked at the schedule immediately, I'm like, oh, man.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Andy Petrillo, Texas, look at that. Panthers at Sens. Brady returned.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I'm like, who says Canadians are nice?
- 20:41Speaker 1: That crowd is going.
- 20:42Speaker 2: To be feverish, JD. I can't wait. Oh, when is that?
- 20:45Speaker 2: What day?
- 20:45Speaker 3: I got to check.
- 20:46Speaker 2: It's in January. Yeah. Amazon must have lost my number again.
- 20:50Speaker 2: It's all right, though. We'll save it a couple years.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Thanks for putting in a good word, eh? No, listen.
- 20:56Speaker 2: I put in a word.
- 20:57Speaker 1: There's no question about that. And they just go, yeah,
- 21:00Speaker 1: we'll let you know.
- 21:00Speaker 2: And I go, okay. Do you want me to send
- 21:02Speaker 2: you his number? They go, I think we have it.
- 21:03Speaker 3: I go, okay.
- 21:04Speaker 2: That's fine. We have it. It's in the Rolex. Yeah,
- 21:06Speaker 2: it's in the Rolex. Talking about too much Greek porn
- 21:08Speaker 2: on here. Last topic before we get to our break.
- 21:13Speaker 2: News in Montreal.
- 21:14Speaker 1: The Habs announcing recent Hall of Fame inductee Carey Price
- 21:17Speaker 1: will be added to the team's Ring of Honor ceremony
- 21:19Speaker 1: on November 10th.
- 21:20Speaker 2: No word on retiring his number.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Price finished his time in Montreal 2022, ranked first all-time
- 21:25Speaker 1: in franchise history in wins, losses, saves, and goals. Made
- 21:30Speaker 1: one cup final with Montreal, won the heart in 2015. Montreal,
- 21:33Speaker 1: 15 numbers retired, honoring 18 players, but plenty of Ring
- 21:37Speaker 1: of Honor guys. who haven't had their number retired. So
- 21:40Speaker 1: that includes your likes of Pierre Turgeon, Shea Weber, Guy Carboneau.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Tal, I'll kick it to you.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Does Price deserve to have his number up in the
- 21:46Speaker 1: rafters at Saint-Tropez?
- 21:49Speaker 4: I believe he does. This is actually like a huge
- 21:51Speaker 4: point of contention in Habs land. I'm surprised by how
- 21:55Speaker 4: many people in the media and in the fan base
- 21:58Speaker 4: there don't think he should be up there. And I think,
- 22:00Speaker 4: I guess, obviously, like Cups is the currency that.
- 22:03Speaker 2: They go by for these kinds of things. But this.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Carey Price carried the Habs dead corpse for years in
- 22:11Speaker 4: that city. I mean, he must be dying looking at
- 22:13Speaker 4: the offense they have now on that team because they
- 22:15Speaker 4: had nobody scoring goals up front when he was one
- 22:18Speaker 4: of the best goalies in the league.
- 22:21Speaker 3: So I think he's earned it.
- 22:23Speaker 4: The most recent player that's had their number retired is
- 22:26Speaker 4: Patrick Roy. And so I think it's time to consider
- 22:30Speaker 4: getting someone else up.
- 22:31Speaker 2: There in the round. You're going to throw Carey in
- 22:34Speaker 2: that Patrick Roy?
- 22:36Speaker 4: I'm not saying he's, he's the same category as Patrick.
- 22:39Speaker 4: He's the best tab of this century without a doubt.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Listen.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah. That's a, it's a tough one for me. I
- 22:46Speaker 2: actually just, I texted my, my dad and my brother.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Cause you know, they're Habs fanatic. So they'll, they'll, they'll
- 22:52Speaker 2: want to weigh in, but you know, honestly, I mean, listen, that,
- 22:56Speaker 2: that 14, 15 years, heart year, what do you put?
- 23:00Speaker 2: 66 games, nine over nine 30 save percentage. Just fuck. Like,
- 23:05Speaker 2: And you look at that roster that he brought into
- 23:08Speaker 2: the playoffs, it was like their leading scorer was like
- 23:10Speaker 2: Pacioretty with like 67 points or something. So like what
- 23:15Speaker 2: he did, like it was Pacioretty and Placanitz is like
- 23:18Speaker 2: their one, two scoring. Thomas Placanitz. I have not thought
- 23:21Speaker 2: about him. Yeah. Like, and that was Subban's kind of
- 23:24Speaker 2: like third, fourth year, you know, Subban Markoff, you know,
- 23:28Speaker 2: David Dayhart. Like there's like that, you look at that
- 23:30Speaker 2: roster and you're like, holy shit. He, Absolutely shot the
- 23:34Speaker 2: lights out. Then his run to the finals, the COVID year,
- 23:38Speaker 2: that was incredible. The way what he did. If he
- 23:45Speaker 2: stayed healthy and kept playing, I think, and got some
- 23:50Speaker 2: better teams around him, yeah, definitely I think you can
- 23:52Speaker 2: consider him one of the best goalies of a generation.
- 23:57Speaker 2: There's just not enough to go on, I think, for
- 24:00Speaker 2: having your jersey retired into that hallowed ground, which is
- 24:03Speaker 2: the Sainte-Cabelle and some of the absolute killers that are
- 24:07Speaker 2: up there. It's very tough. I know cups are the currency,
- 24:12Speaker 2: and there hasn't been a cup there in forever, so
- 24:14Speaker 2: it's very difficult to judge. I'm kind of on the fence.
- 24:17Speaker 2: I'm 50-50. I'm being a fence rider here and not
- 24:21Speaker 2: being definitive whatsoever. Because I'm truly torn, but I can
- 24:27Speaker 2: say that when he was going– in those years, man,
- 24:31Speaker 2: there wasn't a better goalie, and there wasn't a better,
- 24:34Speaker 2: you know, a true game-stealer. Like, those are ones, you know,
- 24:39Speaker 2: there's great goalies, but then there's the goalies that, the
- 24:42Speaker 2: game-stealing goalies that, you know, I think Shosturkin's a great goalie.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Don't think he's a game-stealing goalie. Think Vasilevsky's a game-stealing
- 24:52Speaker 2: goalie when he's on. Like, can win you a game
- 24:54Speaker 2: with 10 shots. So it's like, That's what Kerry was like.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You went into the game being like, we got to
- 25:00Speaker 2: fucking pepper this guy because he could probably hang a
- 25:04Speaker 2: shutout on us. And you saw in that 14 year.
- 25:06Speaker 2: I mean, just looking at his like playoff numbers to
- 25:10Speaker 2: like every playoff he had, albeit, you know, his last
- 25:14Speaker 2: three playoffs, 930, 936, 924. I mean, that's those are
- 25:16Speaker 2: insane numbers.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Also had a world junior Olympic gold and a Calder cup.
- 25:26Speaker 2: None of them in Montreal, obviously none of them in Montreal.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Also may be hurt by the fact that Talon wasn't great. Like,
- 25:33Speaker 1: and I get that happens to all players, but like
- 25:35Speaker 1: the peak was incredible as you guys are pointing out,
- 25:37Speaker 1: but towards it, it was like, Oh, now he's just
- 25:38Speaker 1: a guy with a massive salary cap.
- 25:40Speaker 2: You know, it was very hyper, but yeah, it was,
- 25:42Speaker 2: it was very parabolic. Yes. You know, by the end
- 25:44Speaker 2: it was, it was for all you math wizards out there,
- 25:46Speaker 2: all of our math fan base, very parabolic, very up. Yeah. And, um,
- 25:52Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. By the end, it was pretty down.
- 25:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Carey Price, Ring of Honor, congrats. Maybe the Jersey retirement
- 25:57Speaker 1: coming at some point. When we come back, one of
- 25:59Speaker 1: the funniest guys alive, the great Robert Smigel with stories
- 26:02Speaker 1: of his life in hockey and Saturday Night Live and
- 26:04Speaker 1: his great new podcast, Smigel's Got Laughs for Days.
- 26:07Speaker 2: It's coming up right after this. Our next guest, a
- 26:23Speaker 2: comedy legend, started.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Out as a writer on Saturday Night Live before becoming
- 26:26Speaker 1: the first head writer on Late Night with Conan O'Brien,
- 26:29Speaker 1: where he introduced all of us to the brilliant Triumph
- 26:31Speaker 1: the Insult comic doc. He has also written films like
- 26:34Speaker 1: Hotel Transylvania 1 and 2, You Don't Mess with the Zohan,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and Leo, and is the star of the hilarious podcast
- 26:39Speaker 1: Humor Me with Robert Smigel and Friends.
- 26:42Speaker 2: A big thank you to Robert Smigel.
- 26:43Speaker 1: So my son Yusuf graduates from Northern Highlands, and earlier
- 26:47Speaker 1: in the year he was talking to his friend Ethan,
- 26:49Speaker 1: and I saw Ethan, and he goes, you might have
- 26:50Speaker 1: heard his dad... And he goes, what's his, something like Smigel, something, Robert.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I go, is that Robert Smigel?
- 26:57Speaker 2: He goes, yeah.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I go, we have to meet Robert Smigel. So thank
- 27:00Speaker 1: God at the graduation, I said to my brother, when
- 27:02Speaker 1: I said to Yusuf, I'm so proud of you, buddy.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I go, hey, where's Smigel? He goes, he's right over there.
- 27:06Speaker 1: He's wearing a Knicks hat and he's got Triumph with him.
- 27:09Speaker 2: I'm like, yes!
- 27:11Speaker 1: It was so great that you brought Triumph to the
- 27:13Speaker 1: graduation party for your son.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Oh, I bring Triumph to all, you know, weddings. You know,
- 27:18Speaker 3: I just figure people are going to prefer... to talk
- 27:22Speaker 3: to me if I have a dog puppet on my hand.
- 27:24Speaker 5: No, my son, Ethan, graduated with Yusuf, your son, and
- 27:30Speaker 5: the weirdest thing, he's just like, could you bring Triumph?
- 27:32Speaker 3: There are a few people who want pictures with Triumph.
- 27:35Speaker 3: I was like, okay. That's not really what I expected.
- 27:39Speaker 3: It's kind of your night. Didn't want to draw attention
- 27:43Speaker 3: to myself.
- 27:44Speaker 2: Didn't want to impose.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Not particularly, but, you know, anything for Ethan. Anything for
- 27:51Speaker 3: my boy.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Robert, you got an Islanders hat on. I've seen you
- 27:56Speaker 2: in a lot of interviews. I think Howard Stern, you're
- 27:59Speaker 2: obviously a hockey fan. But take me through, like, where
- 28:02Speaker 2: did your hockey fandom start? And how did you end
- 28:05Speaker 2: up on the Islanders?
- 28:08Speaker 5: I did grow up in Manhattan. And so, you know, well,
- 28:12Speaker 5: I mean, everybody in New York is supposed to be
- 28:14Speaker 5: a Ranger fan, basically.
- 28:15Speaker 2: That's true.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Generally in Manhattan, if you grew up in Manhattan, then
- 28:20Speaker 5: you're a little bit divorced of the Jets-Giants kind of rivalry,
- 28:24Speaker 5: which is like Long Island versus Westchester, and the Yankees-Mets
- 28:28Speaker 5: is also like Queens versus the Bronx. But in Manhattan,
- 28:33Speaker 5: you get to sort of be neutral and pick your
- 28:35Speaker 5: own favorites, except Knicks and Rangers, who were there. And
- 28:40Speaker 5: I was a Ranger fan when I was a little kid.
- 28:43Speaker 5: It was the era of Roger Bear and Eddie Jacques
- 28:46Speaker 5: and they had a amazing offensive team, a goalie game line.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It was called the gag line.
- 28:53Speaker 5: And, um, and they were, you know, a team that
- 28:58Speaker 5: you could appropriately feel sorry for. They hadn't won at
- 29:01Speaker 5: that time in about 30 years. Then the Islanders emerged
- 29:06Speaker 5: and it was the first time I'd ever understood the
- 29:08Speaker 5: concept of an expansion team. I mean, the Mets were
- 29:11Speaker 5: an expansion team, but I was, uh, That was before
- 29:15Speaker 5: my time when they started. And so the Islanders were
- 29:19Speaker 5: like so bad. They had, I think, maybe the worst
- 29:22Speaker 5: record in the history of hockey when they started. But
- 29:26Speaker 5: then like within three years, they became not only a
- 29:32Speaker 5: playoff team, but they did this incredible thing. It was 1975.
- 29:36Speaker 5: The Flyers were the defending champs. First, they took the Penguins.
- 29:41Speaker 5: They were down three zip and they beat the Penguin.
- 29:44Speaker 5: four to three, which was already an incredible thing for
- 29:47Speaker 5: any team to do. It had only been done, I think,
- 29:50Speaker 5: like by Toronto, like 40 years earlier. And then they're
- 29:54Speaker 5: playing the defending champs flyers and they're down 3-0 again
- 29:58Speaker 5: and they tied it they came back to 3-3 and
- 30:02Speaker 5: then they finally lost but they had a really they
- 30:05Speaker 5: just had a very lovable group of guys they already
- 30:08Speaker 5: had pot van and uh clark gillies and um and
- 30:13Speaker 5: uh you know brian trottier mike mike i don't know
- 30:16Speaker 5: if my boss he was there that year but um
- 30:18Speaker 5: chico resh the goaltender who He resembled a sitcom character
- 30:23Speaker 5: named Chico at the time, so people nicknamed him Chico.
- 30:27Speaker 5: He wasn't Latino at all. And I just sort of
- 30:33Speaker 5: fell in love with that team and was so impressed
- 30:35Speaker 5: with the way Bill Torrey put the team together and
- 30:39Speaker 5: their coach, Al Arbor. And then for the next 45 years,
- 30:44Speaker 5: they just came close, but no cigar. A number of times,
- 30:48Speaker 5: Montreal was dominating. And then they had this amazing series
- 30:55Speaker 5: and unbelievable moment in 1980 where they won game six
- 31:01Speaker 5: in overtime. And then they won four in a row. So, yeah,
- 31:05Speaker 5: I love the Islanders because of that team. That's the
- 31:10Speaker 5: team I kind of grew up in love with. But
- 31:13Speaker 5: as a New Yorker, I'm not one of those people
- 31:16Speaker 5: who likes picks.
- 31:18Speaker 3: When I was a kid, we didn't have that.
- 31:21Speaker 5: Where you got to like the Yankees or the Mets
- 31:22Speaker 5: or whatever. I root for all the teams, but I
- 31:27Speaker 5: just have favorites. And the Islanders and the Mets are,
- 31:30Speaker 5: you know, teams I prefer for whatever reason.
- 31:32Speaker 2: You've carried that on to your son.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Because I remember I asked Yusuf one time, is Ethan
- 31:35Speaker 1: a Knicks fan?
- 31:36Speaker 2: And Ethan was over to the house.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 31:38Speaker 2: He goes, no, he goes, I love the Knicks because
- 31:39Speaker 2: I root for the Nets too. And I go, all right,
- 31:41Speaker 2: why not? If it's New York, you're all in.
- 31:45Speaker 3: We have enough love in the Smigel household. To spread around.
- 31:49Speaker 3: But yes, we love the Knicks.
- 31:50Speaker 5: I actually took Rowe, my son Rowe, who's just an
- 31:54Speaker 5: absolutely hilariously insane fan.
- 31:57Speaker 3: I actually posted his reaction.
- 31:59Speaker 5: Like when the Knicks were down by like 20 against
- 32:01Speaker 5: Cleveland and they were sort of starting to chip away,
- 32:05Speaker 5: I just videotaped my son watching the game because he's
- 32:10Speaker 5: just so emotional.
- 32:12Speaker 2: What a run they had. How do you not get
- 32:15Speaker 2: poetic about that?
- 32:17Speaker 3: Absolutely. That game and the, you know, the Ananobi tip
- 32:20Speaker 3: in game.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:22Speaker 5: You know, I have like hilarious video of him just
- 32:24Speaker 5: like falling on the floor, thanking the gods of basketball.
- 32:31Speaker 5: And then for game five, I took him to Manhattan
- 32:35Speaker 5: and we decided to watch the Knicks finals. Is it
- 32:38Speaker 5: OK if I'm digressing into basketball?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Of course, please. No, this is sports. We talk about everything. OK, sports, hockey, everything.
- 32:48Speaker 5: So game five was in San Antonio and Rowe and
- 32:54Speaker 5: I decided to, uh, Ethan was like, he wanted to
- 32:57Speaker 5: watch with his friends, but, but I took Rowe to
- 32:59Speaker 5: Manhattan and there was a guy who.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Lived across this.
- 33:03Speaker 5: There were a lot of watch parties in Manhattan, big
- 33:06Speaker 5: ones near the garden and radio city music hall. But
- 33:10Speaker 5: on 10th street in lower Manhattan, uh, There was a
- 33:14Speaker 5: guy who just lived across the street from a building
- 33:17Speaker 5: that had a huge wall with very few windows. So
- 33:20Speaker 5: he projected the game from his window across the street.
- 33:27Speaker 5: That was the Ananobi tip-in game. And I saw clips
- 33:32Speaker 5: of it. So I said, let's go down and watch
- 33:34Speaker 5: it there. And Jon Stewart had the same idea. He's
- 33:36Speaker 5: a friend of mine. He does my autism benefit every year.
- 33:41Speaker 5: He's an amazing guy. dedicated human being and, but he's
- 33:44Speaker 5: a huge Nick fan. So, so I watched it with
- 33:47Speaker 5: Jon Stewart and we were just in the middle of
- 33:49Speaker 5: this crowd watching the game on video, you know, projected
- 33:54Speaker 5: on screen. We couldn't hear, we couldn't hear the play
- 33:57Speaker 5: by play, but it was just, we just wanted to
- 34:00Speaker 5: be with other Nick fans, you know, and it was
- 34:04Speaker 5: an amazing night, just the, the, the stress of that game.
- 34:11Speaker 5: And then finally, just to be on in New York
- 34:14Speaker 5: city and to see the city explode up close was,
- 34:19Speaker 5: was just beautiful. And then we, you know, we walked
- 34:21Speaker 5: for a while in the village because everybody just flooded
- 34:24Speaker 5: onto seventh Avenue. And then, and then we got in
- 34:28Speaker 5: our car and tried to drive up town and it
- 34:31Speaker 5: took literally an hour to go 10 blocks, but it
- 34:35Speaker 5: was fun. And people were just banging on our windows, screaming, Uh,
- 34:40Speaker 5: F Wendy, poor Wendy, you know, he was one of
- 34:46Speaker 5: my favorite players until that series. And then like, he
- 34:49Speaker 5: just decided to become a villain.
- 34:51Speaker 3: I don't know what happened to the guy. I hope
- 34:53Speaker 3: he can redeem himself.
- 34:55Speaker 1: But anyway, um, you've seen lots of great athletes crossing
- 34:58Speaker 1: over with comedy. You were there, Robert, when Gretzky hosted
- 35:01Speaker 1: SNL joined Mike Myers.
- 35:02Speaker 3: One of my, my favorite shows are the ones with athletes. Yeah.
- 35:06Speaker 3: And I can't believe it.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Being part of SNL allowed me to write sketches for
- 35:13Speaker 5: Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan. I performed in a sketch with
- 35:16Speaker 5: Michael Jordan because we did The Bears.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Super fan.
- 35:19Speaker 5: Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Walter Payton, Peyton Manning.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Jeez.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Who's the best performer, actor of all of them?
- 35:34Speaker 3: Oh, Peyton Manning.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Really?
- 35:35Speaker 3: Peyton Manning could practically be a cast member.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:38Speaker 5: He just understands comedy. I mean, you can see it
- 35:41Speaker 5: in when he does commercials and stuff. He's just you
- 35:45Speaker 5: can see he loves it. I mean, Blake Griffin has
- 35:47Speaker 5: that quality, but he's never hosted SNL. But but Peyton Manning,
- 35:52Speaker 5: more than anybody, is just naturally funny and charming and
- 35:56Speaker 5: and so comfortable in front of the camera.
- 35:59Speaker 3: And yeah, he was he was a solid, hilarious host. But,
- 36:02Speaker 3: you know.
- 36:03Speaker 5: Athletes just bring so much to the table that it
- 36:06Speaker 5: doesn't matter they don't have to be great actors to
- 36:08Speaker 5: make great shows like michael jordan's show is one of
- 36:10Speaker 5: the best shows i i think we were i was
- 36:14Speaker 5: ever a part of you know it had that i
- 36:16Speaker 5: don't know if you saw it but like there was
- 36:18Speaker 5: a character stewart smalley yeah uh some good enough smart
- 36:22Speaker 5: like a self-actualizing guy doggone it people like me doggone
- 36:26Speaker 5: it people like me and his you know and he
- 36:28Speaker 5: had michael jordan on and As his guest, and he
- 36:32Speaker 5: was trying to pump him up and make him feel
- 36:33Speaker 5: better about himself as if he needed that. It was
- 36:37Speaker 5: just a classic. And when Michael Jordan hosted, it was
- 36:40Speaker 5: very interesting because people are so obsessed with the Michael
- 36:45Speaker 5: versus LeBron thing, and it's all about rings. People are
- 36:48Speaker 5: so obsessed with championships and rings. Michael Jordan had won
- 36:53Speaker 5: one championship at that time, and everybody already knew he
- 36:59Speaker 5: was the greatest player of all time. It wasn't, there
- 37:01Speaker 5: wasn't that obsession. And that was after, and this is
- 37:04Speaker 5: after Michael Magic Johnson and, you know, the Showtime Lakers
- 37:09Speaker 5: went five in a row, or not five in 10
- 37:11Speaker 5: years or so.
- 37:14Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 37:14Speaker 5: It's just become this thing about rings. Now LeBron is
- 37:18Speaker 5: in Philadelphia chasing rings. And, but.
- 37:22Speaker 2: He's in New York chasing rings in Philadelphia.
- 37:24Speaker 3: Yeah, he's basically in New York chasing rings. I don't know.
- 37:27Speaker 3: Have we decided how he's going to travel every day? Philadelphia.
- 37:32Speaker 3: That's a great way to ingratiate yourself with the fan base,
- 37:34Speaker 3: isn't it?
- 37:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Just fuck you guys. Not showing up.
- 37:38Speaker 3: For the people of Philly. This is for the people
- 37:40Speaker 3: of Philly. I can't wait to see you.
- 37:45Speaker 5: I love that he wanted to play for the Knicks
- 37:47Speaker 5: and that the Knicks didn't want him.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Right. That's so good. But you mentioned, uh, yes. Adnan
- 37:53Speaker 2: mentioned Wayne Gretzky. How was that? Anything you remember from
- 37:55Speaker 2: that show? I haven't weighed on and how was Wayne?
- 38:00Speaker 3: He was very shy.
- 38:01Speaker 5: He was not, he was one of the least gregarious athletes.
- 38:07Speaker 5: And it's interesting because I don't think there's any other
- 38:11Speaker 5: sport where there's no debate of who's the greatest player.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Like there's, you know, baseball's wide open. Tom Brady tries
- 38:19Speaker 5: to claim, but you know, there's Lawrence Taylor. And frankly,
- 38:23Speaker 5: there are other quarterbacks who just didn't have the same,
- 38:26Speaker 5: people around them but were pretty amazing it's not like
- 38:30Speaker 5: visually you watch tom brady and it's like oh my
- 38:32Speaker 5: god he's so much better it's it's just about his
- 38:35Speaker 5: rings mostly but wayne gretzky there's nobody talks about anybody
- 38:41Speaker 5: i mean there's there's ovechkin and people who had great
- 38:44Speaker 5: careers but nobody's comparing him nobody's debating this you know
- 38:48Speaker 5: because of his all-around game and but Wayne Gretzky was
- 38:52Speaker 5: really like probably the shyest and most low key of any,
- 38:57Speaker 5: any athlete we'd ever had there. Cause they all come
- 39:01Speaker 5: and they have a certain inner confidence to them, you know, certain,
- 39:05Speaker 5: I don't give a damn quality where they're not that nervous,
- 39:08Speaker 5: but Gretzky was, was interesting. He, but he was, you know,
- 39:15Speaker 5: but he had some great sketches. I wrote something with him. Oh,
- 39:20Speaker 5: it was, He had just played for the Kings for
- 39:23Speaker 5: the first year, I believe. It was his first year
- 39:26Speaker 5: completing a season with the LA Kings. So I wrote
- 39:31Speaker 5: a sketch with, I believe, Conan O'Brien and... and other writers,
- 39:36Speaker 5: Greg Daniels. There was a group of us that used
- 39:39Speaker 5: to write together and it was, it was, it was,
- 39:44Speaker 5: I think in between, I think it was in between
- 39:47Speaker 5: periods and a bunch of celebrities coming into the locker
- 39:53Speaker 5: room and giving him advice and, It was just a
- 39:56Speaker 5: great excuse to have our cast play celebrities. Phil Hartman
- 40:02Speaker 5: played Jack Nicholson.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Nice.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Jan Hooks was.
- 40:07Speaker 5: This actress, Betty Davis, who was like 80 years old
- 40:10Speaker 5: at that time and smoking cigarettes.
- 40:14Speaker 3: And Sylvester Stallone, somebody.
- 40:15Speaker 5: It was just Hollywood celebrities who knew nothing about hockey
- 40:21Speaker 5: trying to get Wayne Gretzky pumped up for the next
- 40:24Speaker 5: period because they were losing.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Well, I love the fact that you're dipping the toe
- 40:28Speaker 1: in the podcast world. Humor me with Robert Smigel and
- 40:31Speaker 1: friends everyone should listen to. I listened to the episode
- 40:33Speaker 1: with you and Letterman and Jim Downey, who I remember
- 40:36Speaker 1: because I read Jim Miller's book. The reason I love
- 40:39Speaker 1: Jim Downey is they said that for people who think
- 40:41Speaker 1: SNL is all a bunch of liberals. Jim Donahue is
- 40:43Speaker 1: like one of the few writers who's openly conservative. Like
- 40:45Speaker 1: he was a Republican and he's like.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Well, he denies it. He denies it.
- 40:50Speaker 5: I think he would call himself a centrist, which by,
- 40:54Speaker 5: you know, late night comedy standards, you know, could be
- 40:57Speaker 5: perceived as basically a Nazi.
- 41:01Speaker 2: He's closeted conservative.
- 41:03Speaker 4: Right.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Deeply closeted as Norm Macdonald said.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Deeply closeted.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Not coming out. There's a great line. Again, everyone should
- 41:10Speaker 2: listen to the podcast. It's a great line, Robert.
- 41:12Speaker 1: You guys are talking about another writer and the greatest
- 41:15Speaker 1: top 10 line ever written. And Downey referenced a writer
- 41:18Speaker 1: who came up with the line with the Buffalo Bills.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Top 10 reasons the Buffalo Bills did not win the
- 41:21Speaker 1: Super Bowl. And he says, because of an ill-fated halftime
- 41:25Speaker 1: rallying cry, let's win one for Roy Cohn.
- 41:28Speaker 2: That's one of the funniest lines.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:31Speaker 5: I don't even remember why Roy Cohn. Was there some
- 41:34Speaker 5: connection to Buffalo or something?
- 41:36Speaker 3: I don't know. But yes, it was hilarious.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:39Speaker 5: But did you see the one, but did you see that?
- 41:42Speaker 5: We actually interviewed Ross Moose Dali.
- 41:45Speaker 2: No, I just, yeah. With, was that, that was with
- 41:47Speaker 2: Rob Riggle and yes.
- 41:49Speaker 3: And Alex Moffitt, who's been on this show.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Alex Moffitt famously came on the show and played golf. Yeah.
- 41:55Speaker 3: During his interview while he was, yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 2: And made a putt. And, and, and I, he worked
- 42:00Speaker 2: with my wife on a, on a Broadway show. And
- 42:03Speaker 2: he said, as he came on the show, he's like,
- 42:06Speaker 2: I don't really watch hockey that much, but he's like,
- 42:08Speaker 2: I'm going to try to, I'm going to try to
- 42:10Speaker 2: do this interview. And it was, it was hilarious. He
- 42:13Speaker 2: was making puns.
- 42:15Speaker 3: What, what, what, what show is your wife producing?
- 42:18Speaker 2: Uh, no, she, uh, big gay jamboree when he did his, uh,
- 42:23Speaker 2: he did, he did the off Broadway show. Yeah.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Oh, that's fantastic.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Yeah. No, my wife, we gushed before on you. My
- 42:30Speaker 2: wife watches this, listens to this podcast and every hockey player.
- 42:34Speaker 2: I say, she glazes over. And then I said, I
- 42:36Speaker 2: got Robert Smigel coming on tomorrow. And she said, wait, what?
- 42:39Speaker 3: Did you research? Oh, really? She knew who I was?
- 42:41Speaker 2: Well, she submitted SNL tapes, everything.
- 42:43Speaker 3: Yeah, she's... Oh, she's a comic actress.
- 42:47Speaker 2: She's trying to do a little bit of everything, yeah.
- 42:49Speaker 3: What's her name?
- 42:50Speaker 2: Jillian Muller.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Okay.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Yeah. We watch SNL, like, the best of all the time.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Huge fan of it.
- 42:59Speaker 2: So, yeah, that was the first time. I was like, yeah,
- 43:01Speaker 2: we got Ryan Reeves on. She's like, who? We're going
- 43:05Speaker 2: to get Robert Spiegel on, too. She's like, what? She's like,
- 43:08Speaker 2: make sure you do your research. I was like, I
- 43:11Speaker 2: got it. Thank you.
- 43:13Speaker 3: But Rasmus Dahlin. How is he?
- 43:18Speaker 5: It was hilarious because normally on the show, we have
- 43:25Speaker 5: people who've called in, who've left messages on this website,
- 43:29Speaker 5: speakpipe.com slash humor me.
- 43:32Speaker 3: And you leave a message. And the whole idea is that.
- 43:36Speaker 5: You know, it's a person who has, you know, I
- 43:38Speaker 5: have to make a wedding speech. I have to make
- 43:41Speaker 5: a presentation. I have to make a eulogy or crazy
- 43:46Speaker 5: ones like I'm in an acapella group and our banter
- 43:50Speaker 5: in between songs isn't good. And each one, they're looking
- 43:54Speaker 5: for help. They're looking for like comedy help. So me
- 43:57Speaker 5: and a couple of guests every week, and they're usually
- 44:02Speaker 5: either a famous comedian like Rob Riggle or a writer
- 44:04Speaker 5: like Jim Downey. or both usually, we interview the person
- 44:10Speaker 5: and we give them advice. We pitch them potential jokes
- 44:15Speaker 5: that will allow them to be funny for whatever.
- 44:18Speaker 3: It is they have to do.
- 44:20Speaker 5: So in this case, this was the only time we
- 44:23Speaker 5: ever sought out athletes. We had this idea, oh, it
- 44:28Speaker 5: would be really funny if we helped an athlete with
- 44:30Speaker 5: their post-game press conferences.
- 44:33Speaker 3: So.
- 44:34Speaker 5: I think the NHL had approached me about something else
- 44:37Speaker 5: about doing triumph for like interviewing people on the all-star
- 44:41Speaker 5: game or something, which.
- 44:43Speaker 3: I'm planning to do at some point.
- 44:46Speaker 5: But, but we talked about the podcast and, and so
- 44:52Speaker 5: they went out to different, they get, they sent us
- 44:54Speaker 5: videos of like, I said, who are the shyest people after,
- 45:01Speaker 5: after games when press conferences and they sent us about,
- 45:03Speaker 5: 10 different players and we gave them like three or
- 45:06Speaker 5: four that we thought were hilariously awkward.
- 45:10Speaker 3: And Rasmus, Roz was one of them.
- 45:13Speaker 2: So awkward.
- 45:14Speaker 3: So they, so they set it up and they said, yeah,
- 45:18Speaker 3: he's into it and we'll meet him.
- 45:20Speaker 5: And so it's, I get wriggle and I get Alex
- 45:23Speaker 5: and we're all set up and, uh, and he shows
- 45:26Speaker 5: up and he's like, okay, so what's this for?
- 45:28Speaker 3: What's this? He had no idea.
- 45:31Speaker 5: We had to talk him through the whole thing, but
- 45:33Speaker 5: then he warmed up and he was actually really funny.
- 45:37Speaker 5: It's a really good episode. Uh, but then what happened?
- 45:41Speaker 5: So what we also do on this show is we
- 45:44Speaker 5: check in and find out if we help the person.
- 45:48Speaker 5: Like we actually, with the acapella group, we actually filmed
- 45:52Speaker 5: an ep, uh, their next show and showed how many
- 45:56Speaker 5: of their, our joke suggestions they used.
- 45:59Speaker 3: But in reality, and so that's what we were supposed
- 46:01Speaker 3: to do with Roz.
- 46:02Speaker 5: We were actually gonna, we made all these ridiculous suggestions
- 46:05Speaker 5: for him to do at press conferences, like, you know,
- 46:10Speaker 5: speak in Swedish and have a, an interpreter who insults
- 46:14Speaker 5: all the reporters, you know, or just come with a big, uh,
- 46:19Speaker 5: just eating a giant fish for a Swedish, an actual fish.
- 46:23Speaker 5: And his mouth is full and he's unable to answer
- 46:26Speaker 5: questions that we had, um, a whole bunch of ridiculous suggestions.
- 46:32Speaker 5: But then like we couldn't, it was right before the
- 46:34Speaker 5: playoffs and they just wouldn't, they're like, Roz really needs
- 46:38Speaker 5: to focus. Like the Buffalo Sabres didn't want any part
- 46:41Speaker 5: of this at that point. So, so it's the only
- 46:45Speaker 5: show where we didn't have a payoff, but Roz was
- 46:48Speaker 5: really funny in the interview.
- 46:50Speaker 3: And so it's, it's, it's still a really fun episode.
- 46:55Speaker 2: One of the great all time sketches of Chicago super fans.
- 46:57Speaker 2: How did you come up with bears?
- 47:00Speaker 3: That bears.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Well, here's how I, I moved to Chicago to study.
- 47:05Speaker 5: I was a disastrous college student and I didn't think
- 47:09Speaker 5: I could. Yeah. I, I, my dad was a dentist,
- 47:13Speaker 5: really successful one. So I took pre-dental cause I didn't
- 47:16Speaker 5: think I could succeed on comedy. It just seemed ridiculous. uh,
- 47:22Speaker 5: or be on SNL or anything like that. But after
- 47:26Speaker 5: like four years of struggling, I was like, I met
- 47:31Speaker 5: somebody who was on SNL and he told me about
- 47:34Speaker 5: these classes I could take in Chicago. So literally my
- 47:37Speaker 5: first week in Chicago, I didn't have any friends yet.
- 47:40Speaker 5: So I just went to a Cubs game by myself. And, uh,
- 47:44Speaker 5: I just went up to the box office and, well,
- 47:46Speaker 5: you got any really good seats? Uh, Yeah, for like, yeah,
- 47:51Speaker 5: right behind the dugout.
- 47:52Speaker 3: How's that? Ten bucks. I was like, this is not
- 47:56Speaker 3: New York.
- 47:57Speaker 5: I'm sitting behind the dugout, literally sitting right behind the
- 48:01Speaker 5: Reds dugout. I'm like, this is amazing. You know, I'd
- 48:05Speaker 5: never sat in seats like this at any New York game.
- 48:08Speaker 5: And then but then I see in the stands in bleachers,
- 48:13Speaker 5: everybody's like having more fun there.
- 48:15Speaker 3: I'm like, this is so fun.
- 48:18Speaker 5: Inverse of New York and they're screaming left field sucks,
- 48:21Speaker 5: right field sucks. And they're throwing balls back into the
- 48:24Speaker 5: home run balls from the opposing team. They throw them
- 48:26Speaker 5: back at the players and they invented all these rituals
- 48:30Speaker 5: that all these other cities have copied. And I was
- 48:33Speaker 5: just really intrigued. So then I went to a White
- 48:35Speaker 5: Sox game and that's really where I saw all these
- 48:38Speaker 5: portly guys with walrus mustaches and literally aviator shades that
- 48:44Speaker 5: I always wore and a really really uh you know
- 48:50Speaker 5: white socks jerseys and bears jerseys and and like with
- 48:55Speaker 5: really garish designs that no man over 25 should ever
- 48:58Speaker 5: be seen you know and um and they just had
- 49:03Speaker 5: this weird swagger about them and just in my head
- 49:07Speaker 5: i just heard that bears that bears like just just
- 49:11Speaker 5: it's inevitable come january my friend not a problem And
- 49:17Speaker 5: the bears sucked at that time.
- 49:20Speaker 3: And I don't know why it was the bears, but
- 49:21Speaker 3: that's what I guess just the, it just. sounds funny.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Uh, you know, between SNL Conan, I mean, Dana Carvey show.
- 49:30Speaker 2: I mean, you've probably pitched him a wild things in
- 49:33Speaker 2: some crazy, some crazy ideas that got aired, didn't get aired.
- 49:37Speaker 2: I know you're, I listened to your, um, interview with
- 49:40Speaker 2: Howard Stern when you talked about your first Big break
- 49:43Speaker 2: on SNL was the animated chicken and how it was
- 49:46Speaker 2: just so... Oh, that's my favorite sketch. Your favorite sketch.
- 49:50Speaker 2: But what was like... Is there anything that crazy you
- 49:53Speaker 2: got on TV where you're like, I cannot believe they
- 49:55Speaker 2: aired this and like... I got to hide under the
- 49:58Speaker 2: ice and I can't believe.
- 49:59Speaker 3: They did it.
- 50:01Speaker 5: Well, I did a sketch. I wrote a sketch that
- 50:05Speaker 5: was based on a trip I had when I was
- 50:07Speaker 5: in St.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Martin.
- 50:08Speaker 5: I took my future wife on a trip and we're just...
- 50:13Speaker 5: we had a hotel at a public beach and we actually,
- 50:17Speaker 5: somebody actually broke into our hotel room and had a
- 50:21Speaker 5: gun and I slept through it. And my wife was
- 50:24Speaker 5: just dead silent and he robbed us of some shit.
- 50:27Speaker 3: And then he left. And then she screamed after he
- 50:30Speaker 3: was gone and woke me up.
- 50:31Speaker 5: But anyway, the least interesting part of this is that
- 50:36Speaker 5: we walked on a public beach and we would take
- 50:38Speaker 5: long walks. And one time we happened upon a nude
- 50:42Speaker 5: beach and, uh, in St. Martin. And it was just
- 50:47Speaker 5: so funny. We're just trying to act like we're cool
- 50:50Speaker 5: to it, you know? And this guy's just telling us
- 50:52Speaker 5: about local restaurants and shit with his dick hanging out.
- 50:57Speaker 3: And in my head, all I want, all.
- 50:59Speaker 5: I'm thinking about is, you know, okay, so yeah, no,
- 51:02Speaker 5: there's a really great restaurant.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Uh, it's called, uh, La Hermitage.
- 51:06Speaker 5: And it's, uh, it's just about, you know, make a
- 51:09Speaker 5: left at my dick. And, uh, you know, uh, And
- 51:14Speaker 5: then I just thought, well, it'd be really funny if
- 51:17Speaker 5: we just do a nude beach scene where all they
- 51:19Speaker 5: talked about casually were their penises. And we couldn't say
- 51:24Speaker 5: dick on TV, so it was penis. And we literally
- 51:29Speaker 5: said the word penis like 60 times in the sketch.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Hey, your penis looks great today. Yeah, yours too. You know,
- 51:37Speaker 3: that kind of thing.
- 51:44Speaker 5: Like some Midwestern mom group. I can't remember what it
- 51:48Speaker 5: was called at the time, but yeah, it, it created
- 51:53Speaker 5: a huge stir and it was a big deal. Like
- 51:55Speaker 5: the first time we submitted it, they wouldn't put it on,
- 51:58Speaker 5: but then NBC had budget cuts and they dissolved their
- 52:01Speaker 5: standards department for like a small window of time.
- 52:05Speaker 3: And that's how we got it on.
- 52:07Speaker 2: Oh, that's so, and you got robbed that you got
- 52:10Speaker 2: robbed for real.
- 52:11Speaker 3: That was, Yeah, we got robbed for real. I've never
- 52:14Speaker 3: told that story. It was not a pleasant one. But, yes,
- 52:16Speaker 3: we did.
- 52:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:18Speaker 5: He just walked into our, you know, because he walked through, like,
- 52:22Speaker 5: the glass windows.
- 52:24Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 52:25Speaker 5: The glass doors that led down to the beach. It was,
- 52:28Speaker 5: you know, a nice setup, we thought.
- 52:31Speaker 2: You thought, yeah.
- 52:32Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 52:34Speaker 2: Let's close with triumph. You take them everywhere.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Westminster Dog Show, the Tonys, the Vice President Debates, VMAs.
- 52:39Speaker 1: My brother was so excited. He goes, after I met Smigel,
- 52:41Speaker 1: I'm watching more videos. He sent me one the other day.
- 52:43Speaker 1: This might have been your first one. And I was
- 52:45Speaker 1: so happy because you were talking about Siskel and Ebert
- 52:47Speaker 1: for them to poop on. But what I was happy
- 52:48Speaker 1: about was I'm good friends with Ben Lyons. And you
- 52:51Speaker 1: mentioned Jeffrey Lyons, his dad, the famed film critic.
- 52:53Speaker 2: And I said, that's great.
- 52:54Speaker 1: I said, how many people are getting a Jeffrey Lyons joke?
- 52:56Speaker 2: And I said, well, I thought it was hysterical.
- 52:58Speaker 3: Well, in 1997, people knew who Jeffrey Lyons was. Exactly.
- 53:02Speaker 5: I think he had a national rip knockoff show. Like,
- 53:05Speaker 5: you know, like there was a copy version, copycat version
- 53:08Speaker 5: of Siskel and Ebert back then.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Right. But the best part of Triumph is, as you said,
- 53:12Speaker 1: he has a Russian accent because you just pictured this
- 53:15Speaker 1: dog having a Russian accent.
- 53:17Speaker 5: That's ever since I was like 10 years old, I
- 53:20Speaker 5: just put Russian accents in my head when I saw
- 53:23Speaker 5: a dog. And I always say it's partly because I
- 53:27Speaker 5: had Russian grandparents, like they, they emigrated. Uh, yeah, but, um,
- 53:34Speaker 5: and they talked.
- 53:34Speaker 3: To me like I was, you know, like, hello, how
- 53:37Speaker 3: are you?
- 53:37Speaker 5: And so somehow I either associated that with friendly dogs or,
- 53:41Speaker 5: and then I also say that, um, Somehow I connect
- 53:48Speaker 5: the face of a dog, the wide-eyed wonder of a
- 53:51Speaker 5: dog with the face of an immigrant landing on Ellis Island.
- 53:58Speaker 3: Look at all of this.
- 54:01Speaker 5: Just seeing New York for the first time. That's the
- 54:04Speaker 5: more controversial take.
- 54:12Speaker 2: I know Adnan's kids loved Leo. I mean, I love
- 54:16Speaker 2: Leo selfishly as well. Oh, that's great. Is there a sequel?
- 54:21Speaker 2: There is a sequel. It's such a great movie.
- 54:24Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 54:25Speaker 2: It touches the heartstrings.
- 54:26Speaker 5: I think it's maybe my favorite thing that I've ever
- 54:30Speaker 5: been a part of, to be honest with you. Yeah,
- 54:33Speaker 5: because it just works on a lot of levels. It's
- 54:42Speaker 5: funny to people who like, the kind of comedy that
- 54:45Speaker 5: i do but it's also you know uh emotional and
- 54:51Speaker 5: it's also funny to kids like my favorite thing in
- 54:55Speaker 5: the whole movie is the song where he says sings
- 54:57Speaker 5: about not crying you know which when we wrote it
- 55:03Speaker 5: a lot of people were like you can't put a
- 55:05Speaker 5: movie you can't put that in a movie where you
- 55:07Speaker 5: tell kids that crying makes you look ugly and crying
- 55:11Speaker 5: is for weaklings you know so we screen it and
- 55:16Speaker 5: I swear to God, we screened it. We would screen
- 55:20Speaker 5: the movie and with parents and their children, you know,
- 55:23Speaker 5: big theaters. And this is the very first time we
- 55:25Speaker 5: ever screened it. And he, he starts singing.
- 55:30Speaker 3: Don't cry. You know, uh, crying's for weaklings. Don't cry. It's, uh,
- 55:36Speaker 3: lazy and dumb.
- 55:37Speaker 5: And I hear little kids laughing right away.
- 55:42Speaker 3: It was so interesting.
- 55:43Speaker 5: And, uh, And fascinating to me that little kids were
- 55:46Speaker 5: sophisticated enough to know that it was a cliche to say,
- 55:51Speaker 5: don't cry, you know, and then put a twist on
- 55:56Speaker 5: it and say the inappropriate thing. It was so gratifying because,
- 56:02Speaker 5: you know, I always try to assume that the audience
- 56:04Speaker 5: is smarter than people give them credit for. You know,
- 56:08Speaker 5: my whole career, I try to do that, play to
- 56:11Speaker 5: the intelligence of the audience and not pander. But to
- 56:15Speaker 5: see that happen with little kids just made me so happy.
- 56:21Speaker 5: And yeah, so I wrote all the songs for that movie.
- 56:25Speaker 5: And that was something that I don't get to do
- 56:28Speaker 5: a lot. I did it for a very vulgar Triumph.
- 56:31Speaker 3: Album like 20 years ago.
- 56:36Speaker 5: And I hadn't written a lot. And I wrote Christmastime
- 56:38Speaker 5: for the Jews, which was a lot of fun. Saturday
- 56:40Speaker 5: Night Live. I like writing songs. I'm not, it's not
- 56:44Speaker 5: the thing I do best, but when I can write
- 56:46Speaker 5: a pretty good one, it's really gratifying because there's just
- 56:49Speaker 5: something about a song that has a permanence to it.
- 56:53Speaker 5: Like you can listen to it over and over and, uh,
- 56:56Speaker 5: you know, so like Christmas time for the Jews is
- 56:58Speaker 5: probably by far the thing I've watched or listened to
- 57:02Speaker 5: more than anything else I've ever created.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Uh, Robert Smigel.
- 57:07Speaker 3: And he was great.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Yeah, the best.
- 57:09Speaker 1: So generous with your time. Humor me with Robert Smigel
- 57:12Speaker 1: and friends. Make sure you check out the podcast. And,
- 57:14Speaker 1: of course, so much great work over the years. And
- 57:16Speaker 1: best of luck to Ethan at Miami. And thanks for
- 57:18Speaker 1: your generosity, man.
- 57:18Speaker 2: This was awesome.
- 57:20Speaker 3: Thank you. Thanks. Best of luck to all you guys.
- 57:24Speaker 3: But Yusuf as well.
- 57:28Speaker 5: Awesome.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Thank you once again to Robert Smiley. He was awesome.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Great guest.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Make sure you check out his podcast. It really is
- 57:41Speaker 1: genuinely funny and unique. Cinephile in 60. Speaking of funny
- 57:44Speaker 1: and unique, The Invite getting a lot of buzz this summer.
- 57:47Speaker 1: It's one of those films, if you want an antidote
- 57:49Speaker 1: to the fact that everyone's going to watch The Odyssey
- 57:51Speaker 1: and Spider-Man.
- 57:51Speaker 2: And by the way, movies are back. Box office is up.
- 57:54Speaker 1: 20% this year over last year, and they're back at
- 57:56Speaker 1: the numbers they were in 2019, pre-COVID. The death of
- 58:00Speaker 1: motion pictures, to quote Mark Twain, was largely exaggerated.
- 58:03Speaker 2: It's back. I fucking love that. We're talking about billion-dollar movies.
- 58:07Speaker 2: The Odyssey. Spider-Man.
- 58:09Speaker 1: Michael.
- 58:09Speaker 2: I already forgot about The Odyssey, by the way. Toy
- 58:13Speaker 2: Story 5. Lego movie. Obsession.
- 58:16Speaker 1: Obsession was made for $ 750, 000, and it's made half a
- 58:19Speaker 1: billion dollars. It's unbelievable, the rise of these movies. I'm
- 58:22Speaker 1: going to watch Backrooms now. I finally got the screener
- 58:24Speaker 1: sent to that, so that's a good one-two combo there
- 58:26Speaker 1: with Obsession.
- 58:26Speaker 2: What's that?
- 58:27Speaker 4: Backrooms?
- 58:27Speaker 5: Backrooms?
- 58:28Speaker 2: Yeah, Backroom's a little horror film, you know, kind of
- 58:30Speaker 2: set in that world. You're a horror guy, right?
- 58:32Speaker 1: I'm not, but it's getting such buzz right now. These
- 58:34Speaker 1: movies apparently are so well made, I gotta check it out.
- 58:37Speaker 1: What I am is a fan of The Invite. Ben Lyons,
- 58:39Speaker 1: my buddy who's at Sundance, saw five or six movies there,
- 58:41Speaker 1: and he goes, this is the best movie I saw
- 58:42Speaker 1: at Sundance.
- 58:43Speaker 2: I go, okay, I can't wait.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Olivia Wilde directing it, starring her, Seth Rogen, David Duchovny,
- 58:49Speaker 1: and Penelope Cruz. So I know nothing about it. Just
- 58:52Speaker 1: going to see it. I'm assuming it's a modern day
- 58:54Speaker 1: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Got a couple couples here,
- 58:56Speaker 1: What Happens in the Bing. So Rogan is married to
- 58:59Speaker 1: Olivia Wilde, living in San Francisco.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Living that liberal lifestyle. Small, cramped hotel. He's got the
- 59:05Speaker 2: bike when he comes in. He's really upset. Sorry, I
- 59:07Speaker 2: said Ed Norton. I said David Duchovny, but Ed Norton.
- 59:10Speaker 2: You said Joe Rogan.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Joe Rogan would be even funnier in this role, to
- 59:14Speaker 1: be clear.
- 59:16Speaker 2: I don't even know what fucking movie we're talking about
- 59:19Speaker 2: right now. Get it on the rails right now.
- 59:21Speaker 1: But the idea is quite straightforward. This is a couple living.
- 59:24Speaker 1: They've got some stress right now, and they're inviting some
- 59:27Speaker 1: people over, hence the tell of the invite. And this
- 59:29Speaker 1: couple wants to hang with them, Ed Norton, Penelope Cruz.
- 59:32Speaker 1: You don't know exactly why. And that's the big hook
- 59:34Speaker 1: of the movie, which I will, of course, be loathe
- 59:36Speaker 1: to reveal.
- 59:36Speaker 2: But it is not what I was expecting. It is
- 59:39Speaker 2: riotously funny.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Rogan in particular, you imagine a lot of this, he's
- 59:43Speaker 1: improvising as he's going along. And I think it's one
- 59:45Speaker 1: of his best movies in a while. I've always liked
- 59:46Speaker 1: Seth Rogen. I thought some of his movies got a
- 59:48Speaker 1: little generic, but then he made a real comeback with
- 59:50Speaker 1: the studio, which is one of the best TV shows
- 59:51Speaker 1: I've seen in years.
- 59:53Speaker 2: And now in this movie, he's fabulous. Olivia Wilde, really
- 59:55Speaker 2: good as a counterpoint.
- 59:57Speaker 1: Anxiety, stressed out, nervous, high strung against his stoner label.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: And then you've got Ed Norton, who for years has
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: been a terrific actor and ever since Primal Fear, American
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: History X, and he shows up and.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Almost steals the movie.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Somebody asked me as far as Oscar buzz, and I said, well,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: the four, I think Norton has the best chance at
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: a Best Supporting Actor nomination. He's got a monologue in this,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: which is particularly notable, and Penelope Cruz is always a spitfire.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: E.J. Roddick, a big fan of hers.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: So I will not spoil anything except to say it's
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: a great date movie. I saw it with my wife.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: We both had conflicting opinions on it.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: I liked it more than she did.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: She liked it, but she didn't like it as much
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: as I did. She got a little vulgar and coarse,
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: maybe a little too blue.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: For her a couple times. But you're a perv. Well,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: that's the thing she realized. Yeah, you and Tal are pervs.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: We've already covered this. We've covered, yeah, we've covered Enora.
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: You guys love, look at him. Look at Tal's beet red. Well,
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Tal's going to love this movie. He's all horned up
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: right now. There's no way to. My two horny boys. Well,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: I'll just get to it.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: There's some very graphic sexual conversations in this, and Tal's
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: going to love it.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: That's all I've got to tell you, and it's really,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: really enjoyable. Also, a quick review of.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: The drama, which is Robert Pattinson's Zendaya. That's now streaming.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Another hit for A24. They make it for, let's say, 15,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: 20 million. It's quadrupled that. People just want to see
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: these two stars together. Again, it hinges on one major
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: plot point. They're going to get married, and the first
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: 20 minutes is fun, silly, goofy.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: They've got good chemistry.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: They're with another couple, and God forbid any of us
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: ever have dinner conversations like these with our friends. Somebody says, hey,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: what's the worst thing you've ever done? And so each
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: of them go and explain what the worst, which by
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: the way, I don't want to ever have that conversation.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: The things I've done in life, I'd like to just
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: move on.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Holy shit. Yeah, burn that. I've been trying every day
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: to just burn those. We've all made mistakes, JD. We
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: try to atone for it. That's it. I don't desire
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: to divulge that with anybody.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: So Zendaya reveals hers and that's where the whole movie
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: changes because their reaction to hers, they're so appalled by it.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: I will say this. I enjoyed the film. What did
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: she do? I don't want kids to spoil it. Once
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: that reveal happens. I'm not going to watch it. You
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: can do it. Are you sure?
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Okay. Tell us if it's all right if I spoil it.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: Are you going to watch it? I've seen it. Okay.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: So tell us. My wife, Jill saw it and she
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: loved it. She said it's great.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: So they each go through each thing. One is like, oh,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: I tortured this kid. One is like, oh, I was
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: a bully, whatever. Hers is that she planned a school shooting.
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: And they're like, oh, my God. And she's like. And
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: executed it? No, did not execute it.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: And that, to me, is where the movie kind of goes,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I go, but she didn't do it. She got an
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: assault rifle. She was watching videos about it. She talks
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: about who she was going to kill.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: No, I got it.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Everyone has a, it's crazy. It's fantasy ideas, but she
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: didn't do anything. And the next hour is Robert Pattinson
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: trying to come to terms with this, and I go,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: a little flimsy for an entire movie to run on that.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: What did you think, Tal? Pattinson in the cup chair.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: I liked it.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: I mean, it's two of the best actors in the
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: world right now. I thought the performance was great, but
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: it's like, The thing with me is it's basically a
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: very dark comedy, but they played it super straight.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: I could see this being, you know, a Ben Stiller,
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: Drew Barrymore back in the day kind of comedy. Dark comedy,
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: you know, directed by.
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: Nice deep cut.
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: Directed by Danny DeVito or something like that back in
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: the day.
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: I love DeVito.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: It's super straight.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: It's not a comedy, but the story is comedic.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I think, yeah. I mean, on your Pattinson comment, he
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: has been everywhere.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: He is having a, he's pushing for, I don't know what,
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: but he is doing so many goddamn movies. It's crazy.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: But I love it.
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: Because it was a Chris Pattinson movie coming up.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: He's got a new Batman coming up.
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: Everyone's like, this pretty boy from Twilight, what's he going
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: to do? Yeah, I love your bedhead, but what do
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: you got? He's like, don't worry, I'm going to attach
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: myself to Christopher Nolan. How does that sound? I'm not
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: going to go do Batman. I'm not going to do
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: some indie movie called The Drama. That'll make $ 100 million.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Robert Patton, everything he touches turns to gold.
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: Isn't that crazy? If you can attach yourself to a
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: director and he likes you, you are made for life.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: Done.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: Well, he was in on the Safdie brothers early, very early.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: Yes, good time. You're right. First film. So good movies
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: to check out. Anything you want to discuss, movies, J.D.?
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Any shows? On the way back from New York, I watched, what,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Devil Wears Prada 2. How was it? Again, they just
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: did the obvious. They played on the nostalgia. A lot
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: of plot holes in it. I didn't quite love it.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: Some good scenes, some Meryl Streep's Meryl Streep. How about
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: my guy, Stanley Tucci? I love Tucci because right after
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: that I watched, you know, the Tucci in Italy. Yes. Oh,
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: I watched the Tucci in Italy, his little foray through
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Italy where he goes and eats all the food. And
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: I was like writing down notes of where to go
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: next time we go to Italy, me and Jill. You know,
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: there's some great, I mean, just the food in that
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: is incredible. I mean, so I watched that. And then
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: did I watch something on the way there? I don't
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: know what I watched on the way there. I can't
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: even remember. But anyway, that's what I got for you watching.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: I've just been kind of perusing through some show. The
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: new season of tires came out to me and Jill
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: been watching that. I mean, that is, that is some,
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: some very, very old school comedy, like just kind of,
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: you know, Archie and Jughead comedy, but it's so good.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: And it's kind of like gives you a little bit
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: of the warm feeling. Like you just kind of feel
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: good leaving the show. You know what I mean? Like,
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: you're just, like, just kind of funny shit. It's, like,
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: just two buddies that wrote a show together. It's fucking hilarious.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: Shane Gillis can act, by the way.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Dude, he's good, man. And his buddy, what is Steve?
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Who's the other guy that plays Will? He's so funny.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: I find him so funny. He's so, like, wholesome. But, like, apparently, like,
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: a lot of the stuff that's in the show Jill
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: was telling me is, like, what they talk about as buddies. So, like,
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: you know... And he watches... He listens to crazy podcasts.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: This guy that works with Shingles. What's his name? Steve?
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Do you have his name? Steve Gerben. So, Steve Gerben apparently, like,
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: listens to these creepy audio podcasts. And a lot of
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: the show will be, like, a reference. So, the last
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: episode is basically... He listens to a podcast and an
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: audio book on how to eat pussy the right way.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Oh, jeez.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: And Shane Gillis is like met a girl.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: He reads a book about it.
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: No, no. Shane Gillis has met a girl. And he's like, yeah,
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: you know, I only ate her out for like, you know,
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: five minutes. And he goes, dude, it's going to be
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: at least 15 minutes. Oh, my God. And he's like,
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: can you teach me? And he's like, right. The whole
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: show is him writing a diagram and them talking about
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: it at work. And people are like, what the hell's
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: going on back there? So anyway, it's just a good show.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: It's a feel-good show. That's a great sell for the
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: show right there. Oh, you like that, yeah?
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Bender's going to go, you know, I'm going to add
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: this to my list. Tires. Well, this is probably going
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: to get cut, but it's fine.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: All right, let's get to some polls here. Last episode,
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: we broke down NHL.com's rankings for top defensemen and wingers.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: They since unveiled a couple more rankings. Top 10 goalies.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: Vasilevsky's the best goalie in the world. Number two is Halibut.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: Three is Shosturkin.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: As you said, a great goalie, but he can't steal
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: a game. Four, Sorokin.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Swayman at five. Logan Thompson at six.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: Ottinger, seven. Love this.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: Vladar at eight. Nine is Volstead. And Dobish at ten.
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: Tal's guy. Your thoughts on the list, JD. Any major
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: issues for you? I think the top three is fairly straightforward,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: no matter what order you like.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Man, we went from.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: We really... We really talk about everything on this show.
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: It's amazing. You went from that tires conversation to the
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: best goal.
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: I was like, how do I wrestle this one back?
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: You did it, though. Hell of a segue. Pro segue.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: That's why you're on Amazon Prime, and I'm not. Well,
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: I appreciate that. On Monday night, yeah. You're through. I don't...
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: I had the same issue with Hedman on the defenseman list.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: You know, to have Vassie over Hellebuck, I don't agree
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: with that. If Hellebuck's this... But I'll tell you the reason.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: They'll say Hellebuck this last year wasn't as strong.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Yeah, but Vassie had a good year. And I guess
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: if you're looking at the numbers, yeah, listen, I probably
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: agree with it in the sense that he had an
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: off year. But if we're saying who's the best goalie
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: right now, not who had the best year last year,
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: it's right now. Who would you say is going to
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: be the best? You know, that's the way I look
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: at it. You know, I'd probably have Hellebuck over Vassie.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: I don't have Shusterkin that high. Um, I think Shusterkin
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: obviously he's, he hasn't had a great team around him.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: I'd have maybe, I'd have Sorokin as three and Swayman
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: as four, probably put Shusterkin as five. Um, we have
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: a lot of New York Rangers bias at the NHL network.
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: And I love everybody that makes the list. These guys
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: are the best. They're the best researchers. They do fucking everything. Absolutely.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: I actually like, I'm surprised with the Vladar, but I
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: don't mind it. I thought he was the sole reason
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Philly made the playoffs and had the success they had.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: So I like him. Wallstead. in Dobesh, that's an interesting one.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: You can kind of burn nine and 10 always and
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: put somebody that is maybe a little bit off the,
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: off the beaten path. But yeah, when I really think
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: through it, like goalies in the league, I mean, you know,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: Karel Vemelka had a fantastic year last year. So I'm
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: surprised he wouldn't be on that list over a Dobesh or,
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: or Walsh. But I know Dobesh will probably have a
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: big year this year and he's kind of taken the
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: net for Montreal. Um, Yeah, it's actually not a bad list.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: I don't mind it. There's a couple moves at half.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Shuster can lower, and I'd probably still put Helly as one,
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: but it is what it is. Can't be mad at it.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: How about top 20 centers they put up? The top 10, McDavid, McKinnon.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: That feels great. Celebrating your boy at three. Dry cell
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: at four.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: Barkoff missed an entire season. Still in the top five. Michael, Sid,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Austin Matthews is now eighth. Suzuki at nine, scored over
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: 100 points for the Habs. And Jack Hughes at 10.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: This is an interesting one. Shifley's outside the top 10.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Dylan Larkin barely makes the list at 20.
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: Poor Shifley.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: I'm sorry, you can't tell me Jack Hughes is better
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: than Mark Shifley.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Shifley at 10. I mean, Jack Hughes is pretty,
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: the problem is, is Jack Hughes healthy is incredible. And
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: I have him, I potentially have him higher on this list.
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: But he's just, that's the, that's what you throw up
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: in the air. Now Barkoff, I would have him at,
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: I have him over dry sidle. Even I have him
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: as a solid four. And here's the thing. I could
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: fucking argue that Barkoff should be in the top three. No,
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: you can't. The top three to me is pretty airtight. McDavid, McKinnon,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Celebrini is very difficult to dislodge. I'll tell you this.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: I love Nathan McKinnon. Love him. Think he is an
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: absolute dog. He is the dog. Incredible. You give me
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: a playoff series tomorrow, I take Barkov over him. Wow.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: That is a strong statement. People don't understand, I think, how...
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: Two-way player. I mean, case in point, Barkov's hurt last year.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: That team was... Absolutely atrocious without him. He is, look
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: at what he did with Jonathan Huberto. Look at what
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: he did with Matthew Kachuk out there and played with him.
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: Look at freaking Reinhardt. Look at anybody that plays with him.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: But he's not the offensive talent of McKinnon. Doesn't matter.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: He does everything. If you were talking about the top 10,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: I'm not talking about the top 10 offensive talents. I'm
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: talking about who am I taking on my team for
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: a sentiment to win a Stanley Cup? McJesus, I mean,
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: you just have to. Celebrini is going to be one
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: in five years. I think he's going to be number one.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: I think Celebrini is a different animal. Uh, Barkoff is,
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: is there though. I just think Barkoff is even at five.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: And you know, I, it was kind of funny cause
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: I had this, there was a defenseman on the list
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: whose father, um, really doesn't like me or the network
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: and thinks his son is, is kind of poo pooed
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: on a lot.
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: Um, But again, it's like you're in the top 10,
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: top 20. Everybody's interchangeable. You're in the top 20. It's
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: an incredible number to be there or the top 10.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: So all these guys are interchangeable. These are the top 10.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Maybe Mark Shifley sneaks in. But yeah, it gets really
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: nitpicky when you get around here and it gets so subjective.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: That's why these lists are amazing.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: Because I find everybody gets pissed. They're like, oh, Barkov
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: at five. What the fuck? And it's like, well, he's
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: at five. This is why we have to have a
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: video element. You'll fire people up by saying Barkoff out
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: of McKinnon. Oh, yeah. Meantime. If a healthy Barkoff and
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: a healthy McKinnon, I'm taking Sasha Barkoff.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Wow.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: That is a bold pick, Jason Demers. I like it.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: All around. I take him over McKinnon and Dreisaitl, but again,
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: McKinnon is incredible. But that becomes very subjective of what
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: I like to have on my team. I just think Sasha...
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: He's something else. And listen, it's like it's splitting hairs,
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: but it would be Barkoff by a nose. I love it.
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: Listen, it's going to get people going. There's no question
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: about it.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: Let's get to some flowers right now.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: We all agree on that. Poor Mark Shifley, which would
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: be his top ten. Flowers for Joe Pavelski. After being
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: considered for the Leafs head coaching gig, he's joined the
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: staff as alma mater at the University of Wisconsin, an
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: All-American and national champion at Wisco, the big Pavelski, serving
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: the program's director of player development.
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: You know all things related to the Sharks.
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Obviously, Pavelski, legend. Thoughts on the hire, JD?
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: I mean, he's proven and really has a good knack
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: for the way he explains things, talks to players. He's
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: got a good mind for the game. I think it's
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: going to be great. Those kids are going to be
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: blessed to have somebody of his ilk helping them hone
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: their game. And I think, you know, Joe's probably, if
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: he has aspirations to be in the general manager booth
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: or working in, you know, the executive office of an
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: NHL franchise, I think this is a move that makes
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: sense because I think he'll eventually be there if he
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: wants it. I know he loves to fish, loves to hunt,
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: loves to golf. I don't know if, you know, and
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: it's an enormous commitment to work for an NHL franchise, so.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: do I think he wants that? Uh, it's kind of
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: up in the air. He might eventually take a crack
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: at it, but I think this is a great signing
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: or hiring for, for Wisco. And, and, um, I mean,
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: he lives right down the street. I think he's got
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: a little lake house in Madison and I think he's,
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: I think this is just perfect for him. Awesome. Love
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: the fact he loves to fish and hunt. He'll fit in. Well,
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: they're obviously, as you said, I mean, guys, great fishermen,
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: great hunter, great golfer. He's, He's just a simple man.
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: He's one of those guys.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: And lastly, major flowers for McDavid. Connor McDavid becomes the
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: first player in the history of the EA Sports NHL
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: franchise to have a 99 rating. According to EA Sports,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: 99 OBR is the ceiling of our rating system, representing
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: a standard that few reach. It is reserved for players
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: who demonstrate mastery across almost every facet of the game.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: McDavid's highest ratings were 99s in the passing, puck control,
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: and offensive awareness category. His lowest rating 65 for fighting.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Congrats to McDavid.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: JD, you know what it's like. I'm sure it's a
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: rite of passage. NHL and NHL player.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Like I'm in the game. Like I get to play
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: as myself. Like that's, I don't care who you are.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: That's really cool. And for McDavid to say, I'm the
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: greatest ever in EA sports history.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Something else to be proud of. Yeah. I mean, I
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised if he goes out there and he
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: should just jump somebody in the first game of the season.
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: Get it up to 85. Yeah. I mean, I guess, listen,
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: do I, give a shit about this stuff when I
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: was playing, probably not as much as, you know, some
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: other guys, like some other guys, but you know, I
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: think I was 84, 85 one year and I was,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: you know, very, very excited or, or maybe it was a,
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: it was between 81 and 85, somewhere in there. But
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: I was kind of like, Oh, that's cool. That's awesome.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: I loved playing NHL video games, like loved it. Um,
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: and yeah, if I was playing with myself on a
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: rare occasion, um, Against some, you know, young kid.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: If I was playing with myself on a rare occasion.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: Oh, that is weird, doll. At least with a young kid.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Thanks for listening to HLN Script. This is our final episode.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Good night, everybody. If I was playing the video game.
