- 0:18Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast Hunter. Sorry, Austin Rose Dakota free
- 0:23Speaker 1: tag new members of Characters crew on er Chronicles dot Com.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Check them out, check us out. We're getting famous boys.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's us. We finally made it.
- 0:40Speaker 1: That's coming right off the heel of the breaking news
- 0:42Speaker 1: that Dylan Royola is rumored to go to Miami, but
- 0:46Speaker 1: that is noe longer true, as he confirms his commitment
- 0:52Speaker 1: to Nebraska by being all in dak probably didn't see
- 0:55Speaker 1: that far. He still thinks he's going to Miami.
- 0:58Speaker 3: So I was going to text earlier and say I
- 1:00Speaker 3: saw tweet things going to Miami, but then I saw
- 1:02Speaker 3: Miami reporters tweeting that, so I'm like, okay, probably not true,
- 1:08Speaker 3: which ended up being that true.
- 1:11Speaker 4: So yeah, now it's the maybe it's the portal, it's
- 1:17Speaker 4: what we love.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I checked my sources. Now after what happened with Macouy Coleman.
- 1:24Speaker 1: You're right, but you were right on that. Yeah, in
- 1:27Speaker 1: the long run, there are I don't know. Twitter's great
- 1:35Speaker 1: for purposes of getting news. I guess that's kind of
- 1:38Speaker 1: what my Twitter is based off of his Husker football.
- 1:42Speaker 1: But at the same time, especially now, you just gotta
- 1:45Speaker 1: be careful, and you gotta still take it with a
- 1:48Speaker 1: grain of salt and still take have the ability to
- 1:50Speaker 1: form your own opinions and not just soak up what
- 1:53Speaker 1: everybody's telling you.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I don't even know where how did those rumors start?
- 1:56Speaker 1: Some National Beat reporter or something from the ACC or
- 1:59Speaker 1: something like that said he heard some rumor, and then
- 2:02Speaker 1: some Husker people reported on it that said quoted it
- 2:06Speaker 1: basically it said they said that, and then it kind
- 2:08Speaker 1: of blew up in like two hours in Rayolas, like, Okay,
- 2:11Speaker 1: I gotta shut this up. And it's kind of a pain,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I'll be honest, But that's the world we live in, guys.
- 2:17Speaker 1: That is that is this crazy social media?
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I missed the whole part where he was going
- 2:29Speaker 4: to Miami, and I just saw that I'm in and
- 2:31Speaker 4: then I headed backtrack and be like, okay, what's the all,
- 2:33Speaker 4: Like why is he posting this?
- 2:35Speaker 2: And then I found all the Miami's.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Stuff I saw. I saw no facts of anything about
- 2:39Speaker 3: the Miami thing, though. I think someone just stripped to
- 2:41Speaker 3: you that, like, screw it on, just gonna throw some
- 2:43Speaker 3: things out there.
- 2:47Speaker 1: But I mean, the rumor is too like that he
- 2:53Speaker 1: was visiting his family in Georgia, or he was he
- 2:56Speaker 1: was visiting his family in Georgia, but that he was
- 2:58Speaker 1: basically back home re evaluating the portal, and in reality,
- 3:03Speaker 1: he was just back watching his brother play in the playoffs,
- 3:05Speaker 1: Like that was it. So I just I just think people, obviously,
- 3:10Speaker 1: people like the clicks. That's what they're after. That's what
- 3:14Speaker 1: social media is always after, which is a big negative
- 3:19Speaker 1: when it comes to social media. I just it sucks.
- 3:22Speaker 1: So you just gotta be careful, is bottom line, especially
- 3:26Speaker 1: in today's world where we're at with the transfer portal
- 3:33Speaker 1: and an il and everything that comes with it, which
- 3:36Speaker 1: is a large part what we're going to talk about
- 3:38Speaker 1: today because that's the swirling news of college football, along
- 3:44Speaker 1: with the playoffs being announced, which we'll get to. So
- 3:49Speaker 1: I want to start off the conversation with the transfer
- 3:51Speaker 1: portal by saying and echoing a little bit of what
- 3:55Speaker 1: Rule has said about the portal, and he explained that
- 4:04Speaker 1: it's a changing world, a new world that we're living
- 4:08Speaker 1: in right now. And I think that's true, like very
- 4:14Speaker 1: very true. How I want to talk about the transfer
- 4:17Speaker 1: portal is three things. What do we actually know? Like
- 4:21Speaker 1: what are the facts with everything that's going on what
- 4:25Speaker 1: don't we know, because there's a lot that we just
- 4:28Speaker 1: don't know. And then what's the future, what's to be
- 4:32Speaker 1: determined with this portal and how this is going to
- 4:35Speaker 1: work in our thoughts on what it could develop into.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Here's what we know so far, and I don't I
- 4:45Speaker 1: actually was going to figure out all these dates and
- 4:47Speaker 1: when it opens and closes, because I'll be honest, as
- 4:49Speaker 1: a like casual fan. Two, I guess I'm gonna be
- 4:53Speaker 1: called as casual, but as a fan, I don't really
- 4:56Speaker 1: know what the dates and what the rules are with
- 4:58Speaker 1: a lot of it. I don't think anybody does. I
- 4:59Speaker 1: think the media a lot of them don't either. But
- 5:03Speaker 1: what we know, we've lost a lot of guys in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the portal, A lot of guys in the portal. They
- 5:09Speaker 1: could still come back. One of them did. Here we go.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Here's what we know, and we knew this a little
- 5:16Speaker 1: bit last week. But I'm throwing coaches in the portal too.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But Tony White and Terrence knighton or State gone. Evan
- 5:24Speaker 1: Cooper was already gone, but he's joining them too. Interesting
- 5:28Speaker 1: Here's what goes also goes out from the defensive side
- 5:31Speaker 1: of the ball, Stefan Thompson, junior linebacker, Jamari Butler, junior edge,
- 5:39Speaker 1: Mackai Bayer, junior linebacker, James Williams, sophomore edge, Brody Tagaloa
- 5:46Speaker 1: sophomore D lineman, Vincent Jackson, freshman D lineman. All guys
- 5:52Speaker 1: on the defensive side of the ball, Sincere Safuliya, Dwight Boodle,
- 5:56Speaker 1: a couple of freshmen Keona Davis, another D lineman just
- 6:00Speaker 1: announced today in the portal. So there's a lot of
- 6:04Speaker 1: defensive guys that are testing the waters. We'll say, that's
- 6:09Speaker 1: what we know. We know that's happening. That's a fact.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Those are facts. What else do we know about the portal?
- 6:19Speaker 4: We know that it can also be just used as
- 6:20Speaker 4: a leveraging tool for more money, and that the intention.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I totally like. I never once that Emma Johnson was leaving.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I really didn't unless he was gonna get bookoo bucks
- 6:30Speaker 4: to go somewhere else. It felt like the leverage play.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Why are you gonna leave a school. For the last
- 6:35Speaker 4: two games of the new offensive coordinator, you were probably
- 6:39Speaker 4: the highlighted offensive weapon, if not right behind you know,
- 6:43Speaker 4: one bee behind Jacory.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It felt, you know, So I.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Think that's another thing that a lot of people are
- 6:49Speaker 4: entering the portal just to see what your market value is.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I mean it's a smart play.
- 6:53Speaker 4: It's like, hey, what could I get out there now
- 6:55Speaker 4: people know I'm available?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Or if you're at home, hey how much you need
- 6:59Speaker 2: to pay if you're here?
- 7:02Speaker 3: I mean there's there's a big reason why everyone left
- 7:04Speaker 3: because they're the coach left Like that's what happens when
- 7:08Speaker 3: you Usually they follow with the guy with Tony White.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I don't know if anyone. I haven't eyone commended it
- 7:13Speaker 3: at for.
- 7:13Speaker 2: State yet No, no, no committed.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Usually what happens, which I'm surprised a couple that have
- 7:19Speaker 1: narrowed down, but the portal, I actually don't think they're
- 7:22Speaker 1: allowed to sign anywhere yet.
- 7:24Speaker 5: I think I don't think that part's even open.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I forgot a big one too, Princewell to him, Yellen,
- 7:30Speaker 1: he's another one that I forgot to say.
- 7:32Speaker 2: He's currently number one on the available transfer.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I don't think there's rules anywhere because all these people
- 7:41Speaker 3: are saying, like all these people are saying, these players
- 7:45Speaker 3: have these uh schools narrowed down like that you can't
- 7:48Speaker 3: talk well, you can't talk schools and quotations like you
- 7:52Speaker 3: know these guys are talking. I don't think the NCAA
- 7:53Speaker 3: is a living thing anymore, Like there's no rules anywhere.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Well, Dak, what else do we know about the poor?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Don't get into the don't know you're getting into the
- 8:02Speaker 1: don't know?
- 8:03Speaker 3: Uh you can, I honestly don't know, like nothing.
- 8:15Speaker 4: I know you can play in your bowl game. Yes,
- 8:18Speaker 4: you still play for the team.
- 8:22Speaker 1: So, Dak, let me be clear. I asked you to
- 8:23Speaker 1: come prepare for this question, and you didn't have an
- 8:25Speaker 1: answer for this.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Well, I was gonna say you can only enter it twice,
- 8:32Speaker 3: which I think is a rule. Do you know? He said?
- 8:37Speaker 3: I think, I'm sure that's the rule.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Not so what other things I guess that come with
- 8:46Speaker 1: the portal that I guess everybody should know is Yes, Austin,
- 8:52Speaker 1: you made a great point that once you earned the
- 8:54Speaker 1: portal does not mean you're gone. We talked a couple
- 8:59Speaker 1: of weeks ago about why coaches leave to maybe pursue
- 9:03Speaker 1: a new job when it came along with the Tony
- 9:05Speaker 1: White going to Florida State. A lot of those same
- 9:09Speaker 1: reasons do apply to players as they are leaving their
- 9:14Speaker 1: school of choice. Money is a big one. I will
- 9:19Speaker 1: say this. We know that players are entering the portal,
- 9:22Speaker 1: some players, not all of them. Some are entering the
- 9:25Speaker 1: portal just to see what their market value is and
- 9:27Speaker 1: what are their offers they can get. Like that is
- 9:29Speaker 1: happening because there are any rules, hard rules that the
- 9:33Speaker 1: NCAA has for this thing. And with the collectives and
- 9:39Speaker 1: NIL blowing up and schools continuing to being able to
- 9:43Speaker 1: fund these players, and now let's add another elementor to
- 9:46Speaker 1: the new sharing, but the schools, we know that players
- 9:51Speaker 1: want to know how much they're worth.
- 9:53Speaker 5: So that's a big part of this portal.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And I think you have to be careful though, of
- 10:00Speaker 1: justifying that's what everybody's doing, because that's also not true.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Dak.
- 10:04Speaker 1: You said players are left follow their coach. I think
- 10:07Speaker 1: that's also a very big reason why they go, and
- 10:10Speaker 1: that comes with a lot of stuff underneath it. So
- 10:14Speaker 1: all these also, yes, a lot of these defensive players
- 10:19Speaker 1: leaving are big time Terrence Knight and Tony White, guys
- 10:24Speaker 1: that they recruited that are in their pipeline and they
- 10:28Speaker 1: had a good relationship with I don't think that's good
- 10:31Speaker 1: for our football program at all until we decide or
- 10:35Speaker 1: figure out what direction we're moving with this defense, and
- 10:37Speaker 1: we don't know yet. We don't have an answer to that.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So I think portal people enter for a number of reasons.
- 10:47Speaker 1: That's the one part that we don't know, Like, that's
- 10:49Speaker 1: we don't know the exact reason why players do. Emma Johnson,
- 10:53Speaker 1: that was weird, Like when out there, I don't know
- 10:56Speaker 1: what that what. I don't know what those two days
- 10:59Speaker 1: are like for him. We don't know what transactions, what
- 11:03Speaker 1: phone calls, what's happening in those two days when you
- 11:06Speaker 1: say I'm going to the portal or hell, let's even
- 11:08Speaker 1: go before that. I've heard that these college athletes are
- 11:12Speaker 1: getting so called agents to help them. I mean, of
- 11:16Speaker 1: course they're going to advise you to go see what
- 11:17Speaker 1: you're worth and what you can do, So why would
- 11:20Speaker 1: you not see it? But you don't know what those
- 11:22Speaker 1: Nobody had a clue, Like I would say even some
- 11:24Speaker 1: of the most well informed college football reporters don't really
- 11:27Speaker 1: know all the details of how these players are interacting
- 11:30Speaker 1: right now with schools and collectives and how.
- 11:33Speaker 5: All that works.
- 11:34Speaker 1: It's still a big mess that still needs to be
- 11:37Speaker 1: sorted out.
- 11:41Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, you're right, it is a big mess.
- 11:43Speaker 4: It's I mean, it is what it is. It's kind
- 11:46Speaker 4: of entertaining.
- 11:47Speaker 2: You never know.
- 11:49Speaker 4: I mean, when Davis was announced today, it's like, all right,
- 11:52Speaker 4: why not, sure, let's see how much of a rebuild
- 11:55Speaker 4: we can do on the defensive side. And it isn't
- 11:58Speaker 4: because also you know, all right who Malakai Coleman and
- 12:05Speaker 4: Danny Kalin and that one wide.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Receiver I can't think of his name day On Hall.
- 12:10Speaker 1: So yeah, you're right. I haven't gone to the other
- 12:13Speaker 1: side of the ball yet. But those are the four
- 12:15Speaker 1: big guys, that big, big name, big name, bigger named
- 12:20Speaker 1: guys kind that have entered the portal. Here's here's where
- 12:24Speaker 1: there's a whole other side to it is the guys
- 12:26Speaker 1: that you get in and right now, obviously these are
- 12:28Speaker 1: guys entering the portal, not saying they're gone, but they're
- 12:32Speaker 1: entering the portal. The flip side of that is for
- 12:34Speaker 1: months to come. And I heard the Huscar Aline podcast
- 12:37Speaker 1: make a great analogy, so I wanted to. It makes
- 12:41Speaker 1: you think about it differently, but I think it's true.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Your recruiting classes are like the draft, the NFL draft,
- 12:50Speaker 1: or take any sport. They're like the draft. So you're
- 12:52Speaker 1: you are drafting players right your your higher recruits are
- 12:56Speaker 1: kind of like higher draft picks. You're gonna obviously pay
- 12:59Speaker 1: your higher draft picks more in il money. Your three stars,
- 13:05Speaker 1: your two stars guys like that, you're gonna probably pay
- 13:08Speaker 1: them a little less.
- 13:08Speaker 5: But then the transfer portal is like free agency.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So whatever money then you have left, which right now,
- 13:14Speaker 1: when I say with money you have left, there aren't
- 13:15Speaker 1: isn't a money cap left. There's not a cap, so
- 13:19Speaker 1: right now it's open. This is like free agency where
- 13:22Speaker 1: you can just go out and buy players like.
- 13:26Speaker 2: That.
- 13:26Speaker 1: That's what this is.
- 13:27Speaker 4: Once what's going up, it's gonna change once revenue share,
- 13:31Speaker 4: Like there's gonna be contracts, once the university is giving
- 13:33Speaker 4: you some of their revenue, there's gonna be a contract
- 13:35Speaker 4: tied too.
- 13:36Speaker 1: So that gets us to like the last oh one
- 13:39Speaker 1: other thing before we get to that piece, the roster
- 13:45Speaker 1: size of another thing that we do know is dropping
- 13:48Speaker 1: from I'm not I'm gonna miss up with the numbers
- 13:51Speaker 1: one ten to eighty five.
- 13:52Speaker 5: That sounds right something like that.
- 13:54Speaker 4: No, it's dropping to one five, isn't it. Yeah, maybe
- 13:58Speaker 4: like unlimited to one oh five iver one forty five.
- 14:03Speaker 1: The number I remember hearing is that Nebraska's gonna have
- 14:05Speaker 1: to cut basically thirty five to forty players. Is what
- 14:08Speaker 1: When I say cut, I mean they can't be on
- 14:11Speaker 1: your roster. So the walk on program is a big thing.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I also think Husker fans are justifying while these people
- 14:18Speaker 1: are leaving, because Nebraska knows are no people that are
- 14:20Speaker 1: leaving are not players that we have cut. They're not,
- 14:23Speaker 1: they're they're they're well a lot. Let me finish my
- 14:27Speaker 1: let me finish my conversation. Don't there are players that
- 14:33Speaker 1: are would have played valuable minutes coming up? A lot
- 14:37Speaker 1: of these guys were not players. And if we said
- 14:38Speaker 1: to say, hey, we're gonna cut twenty five to thirty players,
- 14:42Speaker 1: chop them off. So I think Husker fans are trying
- 14:45Speaker 1: to justify these players leaving. Well, we got to get
- 14:47Speaker 1: down to the eighty five or the under the limit.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I don't necessarily think that's what's happening right now on
- 14:54Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball.
- 14:55Speaker 3: Anyways, Now go, I was gonna ask walks counting that
- 15:01Speaker 3: number correct, Yes, they do. They do count in that
- 15:05Speaker 3: because it used to be I thought, now maybe I
- 15:09Speaker 3: was wrong. I thought you used to walk ons didn't
- 15:11Speaker 3: count as you're on your roster size.
- 15:14Speaker 1: It your your roster that you can that you can
- 15:17Speaker 1: have on your team walk on. Yes, Nebraska has been
- 15:22Speaker 1: known to have a large roster because of all the
- 15:24Speaker 1: walk ons that we include. That's yeah, I believe it's yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 1: The guys that are going to practice and whatnot, right
- 15:33Speaker 1: like those are that is your roster.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Okay, that makes sense.
- 15:38Speaker 1: We know that's happening. I think there's more to come there.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I think this is also the first step to what
- 15:43Speaker 1: Austin is saying, and this is the third part of
- 15:45Speaker 1: the transfer portal is what's to be determined and what's
- 15:48Speaker 1: to come. This lower roster size is going to lead
- 15:52Speaker 1: to a more structured roster across the country where there
- 16:00Speaker 1: is a cap coming. I don't know what that cap is.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I don't even pretend to know what that number is
- 16:05Speaker 1: that they're going to put. And with the revenue sharing
- 16:09Speaker 1: impacting all of the payments to the players, and then
- 16:12Speaker 1: how that combines and works with the collectives and everything there,
- 16:16Speaker 1: I think there's it's gonna get sorted out here. You're
- 16:19Speaker 1: gonna see player contracts coming, You're gonna see players being
- 16:24Speaker 1: named employees. You're gonna see player unions coming. I think
- 16:27Speaker 1: all of that is near future college football because right
- 16:33Speaker 1: now everyone's seeing I mean last year a little bit,
- 16:35Speaker 1: but this year especially because every school now has some
- 16:38Speaker 1: sort of collective and the funds and these collectives have
- 16:41Speaker 1: shot up massively this year. It truly is like I is,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Bidder is a very very good target, a good place
- 16:51Speaker 1: for people to look at to go like, that's kind
- 16:53Speaker 1: of what's happening, and Nebraska is benefiting from that. I
- 16:56Speaker 1: will say with some of these players that we've gotten
- 16:59Speaker 1: even is from the recruiting class where we've flipped guys
- 17:03Speaker 1: from Oklahoma, Alabama, places like that.
- 17:06Speaker 5: So it's helping us right now.
- 17:09Speaker 1: But there's more rules to come with this portal thing,
- 17:12Speaker 1: and there really is, and we got to survive this
- 17:16Speaker 1: little phase here and benefit from it the most that
- 17:19Speaker 1: we can.
- 17:21Speaker 4: So just to clarify, there are currently no roster limits.
- 17:25Speaker 4: They bump from eighty five scholarships to one hundred and
- 17:28Speaker 4: five total roster limits, so now you can have one
- 17:31Speaker 4: hundred and five scholarship players, but that is also your
- 17:33Speaker 4: max roster limit.
- 17:36Speaker 3: There you go.
- 17:39Speaker 4: So, yes, the contracts are coming, I agree. And then
- 17:44Speaker 4: there's also the other aspect of the roster limits. On one,
- 17:48Speaker 4: it's going to spread out the talent because now there's
- 17:52Speaker 4: now whether the bottom talent really matters at all, who knows.
- 17:56Speaker 1: And we're seeing that already with the college football you
- 18:00Speaker 1: see it, you see it this year how kalan is
- 18:03Speaker 1: more spread out and I'm sorry, we're probably not going
- 18:07Speaker 1: to get that many powerhouse powerhouse teams back for a while.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:13Speaker 4: So there's that, and the smaller schools are going to
- 18:15Speaker 4: become feeders for bigger schools because when someone's gonna have
- 18:18Speaker 4: a really good year in an FCS school or a
- 18:20Speaker 4: lower tier, you know, mid American school, they're always going
- 18:23Speaker 4: to go to the transfer portal and get coached by
- 18:25Speaker 4: a power for school.
- 18:29Speaker 2: So that's gonna be interesting. So I did have the idea.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Here's the thought I had so half baked. Each Power
- 18:39Speaker 4: for or each Division I football school has an f
- 18:42Speaker 4: ASSOCIATED FCS. It's like a Triple A league. Like you know,
- 18:48Speaker 4: this is part of the Nebraska football ecosystem. I don't
- 18:53Speaker 4: know how you would do it, but it's like, Okay,
- 18:55Speaker 4: you have your pro roster and then you have your
- 18:58Speaker 4: FCS roster down there. That kind of is your developmental
- 19:01Speaker 4: because we're all kind of mentioned it during his press
- 19:02Speaker 4: conference where he's going to have more of a developmental
- 19:05Speaker 4: roster back end fifty fifty five players and then the
- 19:09Speaker 4: fifty players that he's.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Going to get ready for a game day just plumping
- 19:12Speaker 2: another FCS school. Lets you know league, Yeah, the G League.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I I kind of like that.
- 19:21Speaker 3: I like that idea a lot.
- 19:23Speaker 4: I don't know how you would do it, because you know,
- 19:24Speaker 4: I was looking at the FCS schools on the map.
- 19:26Speaker 4: There's three hundred or there's one hundred and thirty three
- 19:28Speaker 4: FCS schools, and there's not a ton of like regional
- 19:32Speaker 4: A lot of the SCS schools are Central America.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Yeah, they're mostly North and yeah.
- 19:38Speaker 2: The Big Sky Conference, Montana, Vakota.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Look at look at how MLB does it. They're I mean,
- 19:43Speaker 1: some of them are regionalized, but some of their true
- 19:46Speaker 1: minor league teams are all over the country, so it's
- 19:50Speaker 1: not unheard of. I think, yeah, the affiliation and ties
- 19:53Speaker 1: would all have to get brought in there. But I
- 19:56Speaker 1: like that idea, I really do. And on top of that,
- 20:00Speaker 1: there's a whole nother conversation with the NCAA to what
- 20:02Speaker 1: Dak mentioned earlier, how you know what they're even here
- 20:05Speaker 1: for anymore. I think that's a very big topic of
- 20:07Speaker 1: conversation that is also going to be had over the
- 20:11Speaker 1: next five to ten years, is their existence, what they're
- 20:14Speaker 1: for and if they can't hold the big twelve or
- 20:18Speaker 1: the big ten in the SEC, which to me, that's
- 20:21Speaker 1: kind of be kind of the first step is those
- 20:22Speaker 1: two conferences saying we have the money, we have the resources,
- 20:27Speaker 1: we have our own structure, see you like, we're going
- 20:30Speaker 1: to be our own governing body and have our own
- 20:34Speaker 1: league and championship. And this is going to be the
- 20:36Speaker 1: one that that model might actually save some of these
- 20:40Speaker 1: smaller schools because once these big schools leave, the revenue
- 20:44Speaker 1: from that they're getting the revenue sharing is going to help, right,
- 20:47Speaker 1: But all this revenue that these schools need to function
- 20:50Speaker 1: in their small sport, especially not just football, in basketball
- 20:54Speaker 1: they're large ones. But your your tennis, you're swimming, your soccers,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you're like volleyballs like those I know volleyball Nebraska is different,
- 21:01Speaker 1: but those these smaller sports need money to operate, and
- 21:08Speaker 1: this model might actually help save some of them and
- 21:11Speaker 1: tie them to a power program. I like that look
- 21:15Speaker 1: at us.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Look at us. Oh yeah, it was cool. Transfer portal
- 21:22Speaker 2: it was. It wasn't quite as fun as NBA free agency.
- 21:24Speaker 4: I always live for the opening day of NBA free
- 21:27Speaker 4: agency or the trade deadline. If we can bring the
- 21:29Speaker 4: trade deadline, that would be pretty cool. I know we
- 21:31Speaker 4: kind of talked about it a little bit ago. I
- 21:33Speaker 4: don't remember what point in the year we were throwing
- 21:34Speaker 4: around trade ideas for who would you trade.
- 21:38Speaker 1: So that's interesting too, because I do think that could
- 21:41Speaker 1: come down the road though, one contract. Once contracts start happening,
- 21:45Speaker 1: and I think that's inevitable. I really do it that
- 21:50Speaker 1: kind of those kind of conversations are going to happen,
- 21:53Speaker 1: so more to come. I just think it's gonna become
- 21:56Speaker 1: a next to another professional type league, whether you like
- 21:59Speaker 1: it or not, that's where we're heading. And whether you
- 22:02Speaker 1: thought that or not too, at the beginning of all
- 22:04Speaker 1: this n I L conversation, you knew that something like
- 22:09Speaker 1: this is probably going to happen because where do you
- 22:12Speaker 1: stop with the paying the players, Like, where where do
- 22:14Speaker 1: you stop? So some something's going to come into play.
- 22:17Speaker 1: We just don't know when and how it's going to happen.
- 22:22Speaker 1: But I do think caps are going to be implemented,
- 22:25Speaker 1: probably first, because that there's just so much money.
- 22:31Speaker 2: There's so much money, it's so much insane.
- 22:34Speaker 4: I I love the I love the fans who have
- 22:38Speaker 4: been you know, when someone enters the portal, we don't
- 22:41Speaker 4: want them, they don't want if they don't want to
- 22:43Speaker 4: be here, and the oh it's.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Just let me let me ask, like what where do
- 22:50Speaker 5: you see rule?
- 22:50Speaker 1: Adding all this, like, how do you view his ability
- 22:54Speaker 1: to navigate everything? I have an interesting opinion thought on this,
- 22:59Speaker 1: But I wonder or what you guys said first, like
- 23:01Speaker 1: as a head coach, that's real.
- 23:05Speaker 5: We know what Dabo thinks, right, Like Dabo's like, f
- 23:08Speaker 5: all of this, get me the hell away.
- 23:10Speaker 4: I mean rules, He's shown that he's you know, he's
- 23:13Speaker 4: willing to go into the portal and get pieces that
- 23:15Speaker 4: he's needed. I think he's probably frustrated with the guys
- 23:17Speaker 4: that he's like, hey, let's redshirt you.
- 23:19Speaker 2: We're going to develop you. I think he could be
- 23:20Speaker 2: really good in a year or two. You're just not
- 23:23Speaker 2: there yet. And then they're entering entering the portal because it's.
- 23:25Speaker 4: Like you didn't give me the chance to get you
- 23:28Speaker 4: to where I thought you needed to be. But I
- 23:31Speaker 4: mean he's been on the NFL side where it's this
- 23:34Speaker 4: is shifting more towards that sort of format, and he
- 23:37Speaker 4: has been to the college level, and I think Nebraska
- 23:39Speaker 4: has always kind of been strategically placed for NIL and
- 23:42Speaker 4: because we've I mean, we were kind of on the
- 23:44Speaker 4: forefront of how we were handling it and what our
- 23:49Speaker 4: collective was like. So I think I do think he's
- 23:52Speaker 4: a depth adapt one and he's talked about the conferences.
- 23:54Speaker 4: He's like, I've been against the portal, but this is
- 23:57Speaker 4: college football now, Like we might have to change a
- 24:00Speaker 4: couple of things that we do here, but I'm still
- 24:01Speaker 4: gonna be a developmental coach.
- 24:02Speaker 3: First. Well, what's interesting about him is he was coaching
- 24:07Speaker 3: college without all this when the NFL came back, and
- 24:10Speaker 3: now he's got all this in al So I feel
- 24:11Speaker 3: like it's taken a little bit for him to get
- 24:12Speaker 3: used to it. Like I feel like I feel like
- 24:17Speaker 3: it's a lot more work for coaches than when he
- 24:21Speaker 3: when he was in college before this.
- 24:23Speaker 2: As far as the actual football goes.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yeah, you see a lot of coaches right now saying
- 24:29Speaker 3: I don't want nothing to do. I listen to erber
- 24:31Speaker 3: Myyor today. He said, I want absolutely nothing to do
- 24:33Speaker 3: with college right now because it's like it's all around now,
- 24:37Speaker 3: there's no stopping.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yep.
- 24:39Speaker 5: I think it's hard. It's a hard job right now to.
- 24:42Speaker 3: Have almost like I don't think yeah, and you got
- 24:47Speaker 3: to please all these eight seventeen eighteen year olds like
- 24:50Speaker 3: or else or else they're gone, They're like, screw you.
- 24:51Speaker 3: I'm out, Like I don't know you. You just gotta
- 24:55Speaker 3: I feel like you wants to want to say that
- 24:57Speaker 3: pick and choose who you want the like, oh, how
- 25:02Speaker 3: do you have to explain it?
- 25:04Speaker 4: I mean, that's why they had like Andrew looks like
- 25:06Speaker 4: the general manager at Stanford and that's literally all he's
- 25:09Speaker 4: gonna do is this.
- 25:10Speaker 2: It's going to be money management. Basically.
- 25:14Speaker 1: They are hiring people, yes, just to take care of
- 25:19Speaker 1: all of the stuff whin I am. I sadly I
- 25:22Speaker 1: got an email from Oklahoma University from when I bought
- 25:25Speaker 1: tickets from them for the game years ago, and I
- 25:29Speaker 1: read there announced on the person they hired, his role
- 25:31Speaker 1: and what they're doing within the collective that they have
- 25:40Speaker 1: daculd you get that.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Even sadly, don't you know? Don't you know the person.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you're you're not a true fan. So here's my thought. Okay,
- 25:55Speaker 1: Rule is a good communicator, or at least we think
- 25:59Speaker 1: he is. He spoke very well to the media. He
- 26:03Speaker 1: knows how to sell himself his program. I think that
- 26:07Speaker 1: pays off big time in recruiting. I think by by
- 26:12Speaker 1: being adaptable, and I think he does a good job
- 26:14Speaker 1: of that. Like you said, Austin, he he realizes that
- 26:17Speaker 1: this is what I want to do with development, but
- 26:21Speaker 1: I have to use the portal. Like I think that
- 26:23Speaker 1: is a solid approach. Fred Hoiberg almost all portal. Okay,
- 26:31Speaker 1: he has been a long time. He's still can developed,
- 26:33Speaker 1: but he wants He's a portal guy, right. You can
- 26:36Speaker 1: tell the last few years he's trying to get veteran
- 26:39Speaker 1: players from wherever in the country, juniors and seniors to
- 26:42Speaker 1: come in and play for him. I mentioned Dama, But
- 26:45Speaker 1: there are coaches that are taking the opposite approach.
- 26:47Speaker 4: And I mean say it, Mike gad that.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Or or you're out.
- 26:58Speaker 1: So Gundy's like that, I will say, Dana Holgerson, I don't.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I think there's a part of him that why he
- 27:04Speaker 1: wants to be an offensive coordinator. He wants to coach football.
- 27:07Speaker 1: He doesn't want to have to deal with all this
- 27:09Speaker 1: extrude stuff. So I think Rule is a good person
- 27:15Speaker 1: as long as and this is a big if, and
- 27:17Speaker 1: this goes about without saying, but as long as you're
- 27:21Speaker 1: winning games and you're building in the right direction. The
- 27:24Speaker 1: second that a talker and a rule to talker, rule
- 27:28Speaker 1: to communicator, rules of persuader, he's a very good persuader.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Second that you don't start seeing results with that kind
- 27:36Speaker 1: of personality, you start to think one word, and that's fraud.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Anything is that word. That word is very much on
- 27:46Speaker 1: the tip of everybody's tongue right now with how this
- 27:49Speaker 1: season ended. He's obviously not getting fired, but all this
- 27:55Speaker 1: talk and all this stuff that we have been persuaded
- 27:59Speaker 1: into believing with him, if you don't start seeing results,
- 28:03Speaker 1: it doesn't mean jack crap. It doesn't. And that's that's
- 28:07Speaker 1: what's gonna be.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Like for recruits too.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Like we had the number twenty recruiting class, that's what
- 28:13Speaker 1: one of the higher ones we've had in years for recruiting.
- 28:16Speaker 1: For transfer portal guys, you can sell them on what
- 28:19Speaker 1: you want, but the second that they're not seeing results,
- 28:24Speaker 1: they start to go, well, this guy's full of shit
- 28:27Speaker 1: and they're leaving. We didn't have many guys leave last
- 28:30Speaker 1: year ruled. How did how proud he was of you know,
- 28:33Speaker 1: we don't have guys entering the portal because they believe
- 28:35Speaker 1: in the vision the long term. But yeah, yeah, this
- 28:37Speaker 1: year's a different story. It's also another year, so it's
- 28:40Speaker 1: a new environment. But that's the opinion right now. Where
- 28:44Speaker 1: I'm out with the rule is like everybody wants to
- 28:48Speaker 1: say it, and it's there. You better start winning quick
- 28:52Speaker 1: and figure this out or you're not gonna look like
- 28:54Speaker 1: you know what you're doing and everything you said. And
- 28:57Speaker 1: this Tony White thing doesn't help it all either, because
- 28:59Speaker 1: that was our best code, our best unit, our best coordinator,
- 29:01Speaker 1: all of that and all these guys following them. So
- 29:04Speaker 1: you better figure it out fast and you can sell
- 29:07Speaker 1: everybody with you when people are gonna stop believing quick
- 29:10Speaker 1: if you don't.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Let's let's be honest here. The rosters nowadays are not
- 29:21Speaker 3: I feel like they're not as much on the coach
- 29:23Speaker 3: as it is on your nil. Like I feel like
- 29:26Speaker 3: it's way more on them to build your roster than
- 29:30Speaker 3: it's almost a coach anymore. How much money, how much
- 29:33Speaker 3: money you can throw out.
- 29:35Speaker 5: I'm just just to know, Dak.
- 29:38Speaker 1: But that hurts Nebraska's case. You would say we have
- 29:40Speaker 1: one of the strongest ni L funds and programs, right,
- 29:45Speaker 1: So that even makes it worse if you're not winning,
- 29:47Speaker 1: because now you're saying we aren't even paying the right
- 29:49Speaker 1: people to come here. I mean, that makes it makes
- 29:51Speaker 1: your coaching look worse.
- 29:53Speaker 3: That's my Yeah, that's the next point is, so you start,
- 29:56Speaker 3: if you're coaching, aren't winning, your nil money gets less
- 30:00Speaker 3: the last two so it just spirals into that. But
- 30:04Speaker 3: but I don't even think recruiting like high school kids
- 30:08Speaker 3: is even that big of a dealing.
- 30:10Speaker 5: More like, see, I disagree.
- 30:12Speaker 1: I think the programs that are going to succeed well
- 30:17Speaker 1: in this new era are going to be the ones
- 30:20Speaker 1: that are able to develop high school kids. It's the ones,
- 30:23Speaker 1: just like the NFL. The NFL programs that hit on
- 30:26Speaker 1: the draft and are able to take those young players
- 30:29Speaker 1: and develop them are the ones that usually end up
- 30:33Speaker 1: succeeding very very well. Now there's exceptions to that right
- 30:37Speaker 1: in all professional sports. But I think you have to
- 30:39Speaker 1: think of it like a draft, like you are hitting
- 30:41Speaker 1: on young kids. That you are going to develop, but.
- 30:45Speaker 4: The time that you have to develop them, I mean
- 30:47Speaker 4: you already get what max five years.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Max, Well you get eight or nine now, but.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Well the COVID years over, we're back time. We're one
- 30:56Speaker 4: that I think we're done with that. So I mean,
- 30:58Speaker 4: if you're not getting them out, you're not getting them
- 31:00Speaker 4: on the field.
- 31:01Speaker 2: In your two.
- 31:03Speaker 3: They're gone.
- 31:04Speaker 2: They're gone.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Yeah, And this goes back to the persuasion and the
- 31:09Speaker 1: buy in of what you're trying to build as a program,
- 31:12Speaker 1: right and and and with someone like Rule, who I
- 31:15Speaker 1: would say is living in the middle with it all,
- 31:18Speaker 1: with the portal and and the recruiting and development piece,
- 31:23Speaker 1: like you have to be tremendous at selling to these
- 31:25Speaker 1: players why they're value. And a lot of these youngers
- 31:27Speaker 1: are like Ky Wallon is a perfect example that just
- 31:30Speaker 1: announced he had so much potential. And yes, there's all
- 31:35Speaker 1: the stuff with our defense and the coordinators and coach
- 31:39Speaker 1: is leaving, but like this is your development guy.
- 31:42Speaker 5: Like you got to keep a guy like this around.
- 31:45Speaker 5: If you win and you're.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Showing results, that persuasion is a lot easier. But if
- 31:50Speaker 1: you're not, you're right, like they're gonna say well, I'm
- 31:53Speaker 1: not here. Okay, maybe best case scenario, I get developed
- 31:56Speaker 1: and I'm starting my junior year.
- 31:58Speaker 5: But for a six and sixteen, that's no fun. Jeff
- 32:01Speaker 5: Simms made the playoffs this year.
- 32:06Speaker 4: He did, he did. Chins also made the playoffs Nebraska.
- 32:17Speaker 3: I didn't even think about that, but SAMs.
- 32:19Speaker 1: It's one of those things though. You you you watch
- 32:21Speaker 1: these players that go to other places, and yeah, they
- 32:23Speaker 1: they have they have decent careers and because they're good players,
- 32:28Speaker 1: they're solid players. Not Jeff Simms, but like some of
- 32:32Speaker 1: these other transfers that go other places. That's how it goes.
- 32:35Speaker 1: And so you have to be very strategic in how
- 32:41Speaker 1: you keep guys here and then on top of that
- 32:44Speaker 1: identifying the players that you can pull in. And that
- 32:47Speaker 1: side's still to be determined to come here. Uh in
- 32:51Speaker 1: the next several weeks, couple of months here with the
- 32:54Speaker 1: transfer portal, like what guys are we getting? Isaiah and
- 32:56Speaker 1: a or Jamal Banks were the two big receiver targets.
- 32:59Speaker 1: What did they pay out for this year and what
- 33:00Speaker 1: do you think average at best? Like they were good
- 33:04Speaker 1: on average?
- 33:08Speaker 3: Yeah, less less than what I expect them to do.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I mean that that's that's just that that that right there.
- 33:16Speaker 1: You so to the point of the media and everybody
- 33:19Speaker 1: getting all hyped up and jacked up about recruiting and
- 33:21Speaker 1: the stars and the portal and the top ranked transfer.
- 33:25Speaker 5: I don't care like I.
- 33:27Speaker 1: I guess that's why I've never been a big hpe
- 33:30Speaker 1: man over recruiting in the past too. I need to
- 33:34Speaker 1: like see them do something and produce and develop in
- 33:37Speaker 1: your program before I get excited about it. Other media
- 33:41Speaker 1: outlets and fans are not like that, because I need
- 33:45Speaker 1: something to have excitement about in the off season.
- 33:49Speaker 5: It's just hard for me to look at this and
- 33:50Speaker 5: go okay, great.
- 33:51Speaker 1: And in the same way when guys leave, I'm also
- 33:54Speaker 1: kind of like, all right, like what does this mean?
- 33:56Speaker 1: I don't know. I think this could be what it means,
- 33:58Speaker 1: but I'm like, let's just see. Let's see what happens.
- 34:01Speaker 1: And right now, the results that we're seeing with the
- 34:03Speaker 1: rule has not been good to end the year, so
- 34:07Speaker 1: we have to time to tell on what kind of
- 34:10Speaker 1: plat I mean. I hear all this hype on this
- 34:11Speaker 1: Cortes Mills. We got this receiver, like how he's gonna
- 34:15Speaker 1: be basically hand in hand with Jacry Barney, I'm like, okay, great,
- 34:19Speaker 1: Like we'll find out next August. We're gonna get hyped
- 34:24Speaker 1: up in the spring about it. But that's what we
- 34:26Speaker 1: do here at Nebraska. That's what we do.
- 34:29Speaker 4: That's what you're supposed to do as a fan, though, Hunter,
- 34:31Speaker 4: let's not act like you're supposed.
- 34:32Speaker 2: To go said, yes, it is.
- 34:35Speaker 4: You're not supposed to Now I will say we're a
- 34:36Speaker 4: little hyperbolic. You know, we think we always have the
- 34:40Speaker 4: next Christian McCaffrey on our roster.
- 34:42Speaker 1: But yeah, a good way of putting it. Like, I agree,
- 34:46Speaker 1: it's not fun being a fan if you're always.
- 34:49Speaker 2: If you're not excited about anyone on your.
- 34:50Speaker 1: Team, pessimistic. I wouldn't. I wouldn't say I'm pessimistic in
- 34:55Speaker 1: the offseason. I just don't get hyperbolic. I don't get optimistic.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I go, oh, we got this four star, sweet.
- 35:02Speaker 4: I'm excited to see how they play. I'm not going
- 35:04Speaker 4: to say that they're gonna knock the world on their ass, you.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Know where we're as some fans will say, oh, we
- 35:09Speaker 1: got the sportstar. Hey look at this video. Look at
- 35:11Speaker 1: this video, Hey, look at this Guy's gonna be the
- 35:13Speaker 1: next Jamar Chase, like people go down those rabbit holes
- 35:18Speaker 1: and it's like, oh my god, like chill out. We
- 35:20Speaker 1: haven't seen play snap yet. That goes back to Dylan Rightola,
- 35:25Speaker 1: like going into the year exceeded expectations, Matt didn't exceed.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Like what do people think?
- 35:33Speaker 5: I think everybody was all over the board before they
- 35:35Speaker 5: thought would we had we didn't.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Do our end of year. The end of the year
- 35:38Speaker 2: happened so quick we didn't even to do our end
- 35:40Speaker 2: of year recap.
- 35:41Speaker 4: I mean we just rolled straight into Tony White game
- 35:43Speaker 4: fired and maybe.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Yeah it happened quick.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Well we're not There's.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Say, we haven't hit the end of the year yet.
- 35:53Speaker 4: What a good transition. Both selection happened December twenty eighth.
- 35:58Speaker 4: Pinstrap Bull you going.
- 36:00Speaker 1: No, no, we have basketball come on at Yankee Stadium.
- 36:04Speaker 2: It would be cool.
- 36:07Speaker 1: And they won't have a chance to win.
- 36:09Speaker 2: What's the sponsor? It's like bad boys, bad boys, bad boys.
- 36:14Speaker 5: That's what now.
- 36:15Speaker 3: I feel like this is Boston College is like twenty
- 36:18Speaker 3: fifth time playing in this game. Every single time. I
- 36:20Speaker 3: feel like the Pinstripe bulls on there in it.
- 36:23Speaker 1: So I heard something very interesting is when they made
- 36:27Speaker 1: the Pin Strike Bowl. I think it was ten years ago.
- 36:30Speaker 1: The Pin Strike Bowl had not an agreement but basically
- 36:34Speaker 1: an unwritten agreement with the Big Ten that said, we
- 36:37Speaker 1: want to try to get ten different Big Ten teams
- 36:40Speaker 1: in our bowl in ten years. And the two teams
- 36:45Speaker 1: that were eligible for a bowl this year that have
- 36:47Speaker 1: not played in the Pin Stripe Bowl were Michigan and Nebraska,
- 36:51Speaker 1: and therefore those were the two candidates to play. I
- 36:58Speaker 1: think every other team, obviously we haven't we even made
- 37:01Speaker 1: it one since then, but every other team has kind
- 37:04Speaker 1: of had their chance. So that is another reason I
- 37:07Speaker 1: think why we are got selected. Like it's some people
- 37:12Speaker 1: are talking about the cold weather and warm versus warm weather.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I don't care. Like New York City kind of cool,
- 37:19Speaker 1: kind of fun baseball stadium, kind of fun. Boston College,
- 37:24Speaker 1: I think a fun opponent to play, right, it's another
- 37:29Speaker 1: power conference opponent that also is Again we talk about
- 37:34Speaker 1: this portal thing, and IL think like it's only impacting Nebraska,
- 37:37Speaker 1: It's impacting everyone. They're better quarterback Thomas Castillanos, who's a
- 37:43Speaker 1: big time running running threat. He entered the portal earlier today.
- 37:47Speaker 1: So everyone's going through this stuff. We're not really gonna
- 37:51Speaker 1: know who's gonna play in this game until we get
- 37:53Speaker 1: a lot closer to it right now, If you want
- 37:55Speaker 1: to try to piece together our defense, I mean I
- 37:57Speaker 1: guess you could try, but we'll do that.
- 38:00Speaker 5: We'll do that in our pregame episode next week and.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Like like we'll see that.
- 38:08Speaker 5: That's that's the fun part about it.
- 38:10Speaker 1: But I think it's a it's a good opportunity to
- 38:13Speaker 1: play against a team that we're favored, Like we're favored
- 38:16Speaker 1: by three and a half for whatever that means. Uh.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And Bill O'Brien their their head coach, who came from
- 38:23Speaker 1: Alabama's OC took the job last year, was also a candidate,
- 38:28Speaker 1: a name thrown around before we hired Rule that we
- 38:31Speaker 1: talked about quite a bit that we were like, so
- 38:36Speaker 1: you have that element there too. I'm excited for it.
- 38:40Speaker 1: It'll be it' it's it's an eleven am game. Not
- 38:44Speaker 1: thrilled about the time, but uh, it's the Saturday after
- 38:49Speaker 1: Christmas Saturday.
- 38:51Speaker 3: You can play eleven am on Thursdays. Yeah, what you
- 38:58Speaker 3: plan on Friday? Right, you can play.
- 39:03Speaker 1: You need to stop talking about Oklahoma because you're not
- 39:05Speaker 1: a fan. You got showed up at a bar by
- 39:07Speaker 1: a thirty two year old woman.
- 39:11Speaker 2: On Saturday.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Yeah, you knew more Olkhoma players than I did.
- 39:14Speaker 5: We'll just say that, No, not more Oklahoma players.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Don't even leave it at that more about everything Oklahoma
- 39:19Speaker 1: than you did, and it wasn't even close. It was
- 39:22Speaker 1: like ten times as much as you did. You need
- 39:24Speaker 1: to stop with this Oklahoma and throw all this stuff
- 39:25Speaker 1: away because you're not a fan, Like, just get rid
- 39:27Speaker 1: of it. You don't even know when they.
- 39:29Speaker 3: Play Friday, eleven am, December twenty seven.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Nailed it. I don't know the Saturday, that'll be nice.
- 39:38Speaker 2: It's Saturday after Christmas. You're kind of tired of hang
- 39:40Speaker 2: at your family.
- 39:41Speaker 4: It's like, all right, like here's three hours where we
- 39:44Speaker 4: don't have to talk to each other.
- 39:45Speaker 5: We could just watch this game. Yeah, I it'll be intriguing.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Like I think it's a good bowl game to play
- 39:54Speaker 1: in for getting back to a bowl game for the
- 39:56Speaker 1: first time in eight years.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Who's Who's got more fans because Boston the hell blot
- 40:02Speaker 3: closer to Nebraska. But I don't think I don't think
- 40:06Speaker 3: they're very very well traveling fan base.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Nebraska will travel hard to that Mole game. I guarantee it.
- 40:14Speaker 4: There are already some travel packages if you got that
- 40:16Speaker 4: email for the Brest alumni.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Uh.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Next topic of conversation that kind of transitions into into
- 40:27Speaker 1: or off the bowl game is the playoffs in the
- 40:30Speaker 1: selection and I guess overall thoughts with how the committee
- 40:36Speaker 1: made their picks their matchups. We don't need to go
- 40:41Speaker 1: through the bracket. I think people have seen it know
- 40:43Speaker 1: what's going on. Here's my very first general thought, and
- 40:46Speaker 1: we've mentioned this stuff before. I'm so excited for the
- 40:51Speaker 1: playoffs and the home game and the twelve team. I
- 40:54Speaker 1: think it's so good for college football, especially this year.
- 40:57Speaker 1: And you could even argue argue this year a larger
- 41:00Speaker 1: playoff was necessary would have been even more fun, because truly,
- 41:05Speaker 1: I do think there are sixteen to eighteen teams in
- 41:08Speaker 1: college football that could win it this year, not all
- 41:12Speaker 1: directly even, but they all could win it. And that's
- 41:15Speaker 1: what makes it fun. Is like we saw conference championship weekend,
- 41:19Speaker 1: there was no spread over five for all the conference championships.
- 41:22Speaker 1: We haven't had a year like this in a long time,
- 41:25Speaker 1: so it makes every game intriguing. And there were still
- 41:29Speaker 1: blowhouts in the conference championship, so that's where we're at
- 41:34Speaker 1: in college football.
- 41:35Speaker 5: It's great. It's great for the sport.
- 41:37Speaker 1: I know people were complaining about how the committee came
- 41:39Speaker 1: up with their criteria and their selection, and I will
- 41:42Speaker 1: say I disagree with putting SMU in over Alabama, but
- 41:44Speaker 1: I'm not like.
- 41:46Speaker 4: You're not about.
- 41:48Speaker 1: It, like I understand. I actually thought they put Alabama
- 41:52Speaker 1: in since the NCAA wants to keep you know, the
- 41:54Speaker 1: SEC happy, and they didn't. I know most people didn't
- 41:58Speaker 1: want that to happen. They wanted SMU in because they
- 42:00Speaker 1: are just tired of Alabama. So Alabama was one of
- 42:03Speaker 1: the first teams left out, and then Miami got left
- 42:07Speaker 1: out as the thirteen Ole miss at fourteen, South Carolina fifteen.
- 42:11Speaker 1: Those are kind of the teams right around there. But
- 42:14Speaker 1: I guess overall thoughts in the playoffs from your guys' perspective,
- 42:18Speaker 1: as we get closer to the first round.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Dank you want to go first?
- 42:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, well, first off, top, I think they
- 42:29Speaker 3: committe got right with the SMU because if you if
- 42:33Speaker 3: you would have played Alabama, I think you'd have teams
- 42:35Speaker 3: off that conference style games like screw that, We're not
- 42:37Speaker 3: gonna Ryan played like SU had to play an extra
- 42:40Speaker 3: game and they kept it close, which I think they
- 42:43Speaker 3: had to keep it ten or let's get put in
- 42:45Speaker 3: like that, and by keeping it within three, I think
- 42:50Speaker 3: made a better choice for SMU because they had the
- 42:54Speaker 3: guy can't think they had two losses. SMU did. One
- 43:00Speaker 3: was an extra game. So I I think if you
- 43:01Speaker 3: put Alabama and teams completely just opt out of common
- 43:04Speaker 3: stock games like we're not doing that. So I I
- 43:06Speaker 3: think if top of that, next thing is it'll be
- 43:10Speaker 3: sweet to see Hong in like you said, like Indiana
- 43:15Speaker 3: going another Dame when it's like ten degrees outside, it's
- 43:17Speaker 3: gonna be awesome. I'm seen going down Texas killing them.
- 43:21Speaker 3: That's gonna be awesome. I think I think all the
- 43:27Speaker 3: matchups are set up pretty well too, Like there's not
- 43:32Speaker 3: there's not any matchup in the first round. Think it's
- 43:34Speaker 3: gonna be completely blow out. Maybe that's that's does that's
- 43:41Speaker 3: play Penn State? Mm hmm, that that could get out.
- 43:46Speaker 3: Like I'm not saying SMU is better in Alabama. I'm
- 43:48Speaker 3: not saying that.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yes, So that's that's where the argument I'm not saying
- 43:52Speaker 1: that is who's better? And to me, who would what
- 43:57Speaker 1: game would I rather watch? Would I rather rather watch
- 44:00Speaker 1: Alabama going to Penn State or SMU go into Penn State.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Then if your arguments what would I rather watch the
- 44:07Speaker 4: regular season has to matter?
- 44:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's hard. It's hard.
- 44:11Speaker 2: If Alabama went eight.
- 44:12Speaker 4: And four, people would still be like, I'd rather watch
- 44:14Speaker 4: Alabama play Penn State than s m U actual and.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And people are saying because of you know, the SEC
- 44:21Speaker 1: is a gauntlet and YadA YadA YadA.
- 44:23Speaker 5: I but.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Half that does another like it's it is what it
- 44:28Speaker 1: is with how they decided. What I'm I say, what
- 44:32Speaker 1: I'm most upset about, not upset, but puzzled by is
- 44:35Speaker 1: how how they kept it Clemson at the twelve and
- 44:38Speaker 1: SMU at the eleven.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't get that, that's the part.
- 44:44Speaker 1: But I think that was matchup based. I think they
- 44:46Speaker 1: wanted Texas to play Clemson s play path. I think
- 44:50Speaker 1: I think that's why that happened. I just was confused
- 44:52Speaker 1: by how they decided that.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 44:54Speaker 4: Yeah, boot freaking who Alabama crimea River. You didn't get
- 44:58Speaker 4: the benefit of the doubt. Ones seed higher like their
- 45:01Speaker 4: ads throwing a fit. We're gonna have to look at
- 45:03Speaker 4: our schedules like you lost the unranked Oklahoma, you lost
- 45:06Speaker 4: to unraked Vanderbilt.
- 45:08Speaker 2: That's your fault, like those it wasn't your schedule's fault.
- 45:11Speaker 1: That you want and and I agree like Alabama fans like,
- 45:16Speaker 1: don't get blown out by Oklahoma, like Oklahoma was not
- 45:19Speaker 1: a good football this year.
- 45:20Speaker 4: And then have Mercer two weeks from the last. You know, like,
- 45:23Speaker 4: let's not act like you've historically scheduled tough non con
- 45:26Speaker 4: opponents at home or you know, on the road. Outside
- 45:30Speaker 4: of Texas, it was like there were like six like
- 45:34Speaker 4: true road environment games against ranked opponents or something.
- 45:40Speaker 3: What I what I do think, which you're probably gonna
- 45:42Speaker 3: fix that next year. Is the seating part because Boise
- 45:46Speaker 3: as a four seed, getting them get in the one
- 45:49Speaker 3: seed almost sucks because now you're working up the Ohio
- 45:52Speaker 3: State or Tennessee. I agree, and then I can't. I
- 45:54Speaker 3: can't think what seeds is.
- 45:56Speaker 1: See I I I don't that argument people are thrown
- 46:01Speaker 1: out there.
- 46:01Speaker 5: I just don't. I don't see it.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I don't agree, Like I don't know, like five, six, seven,
- 46:06Speaker 1: and eight, nine to ten, they're all especially this year
- 46:09Speaker 1: in college football, they're all the same. Everybody's the same,
- 46:12Speaker 1: and reward the conference champions and I don't think anybody
- 46:16Speaker 1: saw Boise State being the three seed and definitely didn't
- 46:19Speaker 1: see Arizona State being the four seed. I get that
- 46:22Speaker 1: that people didn't see that, but I think people in
- 46:24Speaker 1: their mind are saying, well, Boise State and Arizona State
- 46:28Speaker 1: aren't that good, so what they won their conference title?
- 46:30Speaker 1: Like I think they're pretty good.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 46:34Speaker 1: And then they won their conference title, so whether he
- 46:36Speaker 1: saw that coming into the year or not, just because
- 46:38Speaker 1: they're not a traditional team that we see in these spots,
- 46:42Speaker 1: and people are saying, well, if it would have been
- 46:43Speaker 1: the four team, this is what it would have been.
- 46:47Speaker 1: And then obviously those teams are not getting in.
- 46:52Speaker 2: L State is not in. It is a four team, but.
- 46:56Speaker 1: It's a if you won your conference championship, I think
- 46:58Speaker 1: that should be rewarded and it makes these first round
- 47:00Speaker 1: matchups I think all of a lot more fun too.
- 47:03Speaker 1: And yeah, an eight seed or a seventh seed might
- 47:06Speaker 1: beat a two seed, maybe not this year in a matchup,
- 47:09Speaker 1: but a sixth seed might be favored against a three seed.
- 47:11Speaker 5: That's okay, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 47:13Speaker 4: This year, it will be Penn State against the Boise State,
- 47:16Speaker 4: will be favored. Like, if you look at the bracket,
- 47:18Speaker 4: you're happy if your Penn State, You're upset at your Oregon,
- 47:21Speaker 4: and you're probably happy if you're Georgia.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Those are probably the three teams that you feel so yeah.
- 47:27Speaker 1: And everybody's arguing about the Organ thing. I'm like, okay,
- 47:30Speaker 1: well who do you want to play? Like?
- 47:32Speaker 4: I agree, I it just sucks if you're organ It's
- 47:35Speaker 4: like I went undefeated just to have to play Ohio
- 47:36Speaker 4: State again or Tennessee in the second and after my bye.
- 47:40Speaker 3: I guess, I guess you're that good. You're gonna have
- 47:42Speaker 3: to go through either way.
- 47:44Speaker 1: I don't even say nobody's that good. Like Oregon, I guess, yeah,
- 47:48Speaker 1: went undefeated, they're the one team.
- 47:49Speaker 4: But Georgia almost lost eight overtimes to Georgia Tech last
- 47:53Speaker 4: last week of the year.
- 47:55Speaker 1: It's just is what it is like quarterbacks out for
- 47:58Speaker 1: the year, who can string together, who can string together
- 48:02Speaker 1: three or four games?
- 48:04Speaker 2: And then you can yeah, yeah, screw Alabama fans and
- 48:08Speaker 2: then they're a bitch and it's like, oh, you mean
- 48:09Speaker 2: last year when Florida State got left out because their
- 48:11Speaker 2: starting quarterback got hurt, but went undefeated and won their Conference.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Oh no, poor you.
- 48:19Speaker 3: Kind of they kind of came back on them this year, like, yeah,
- 48:25Speaker 3: playing my extra. I don't know. I i'd love the
- 48:30Speaker 3: home game. I wish the second round was home games too. Still,
- 48:33Speaker 3: I hate I hate that because I would love to
- 48:35Speaker 3: see boys who play home game at Arizona State play
- 48:37Speaker 3: home game.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Yeah, then you're losing some of these cool wool game venues.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Venues, You move them, you just move them.
- 48:45Speaker 4: I think what really sucks is if you're saying you're
- 48:49Speaker 4: Tennessee lose to Ohio State and you're Clemson lose in Texas,
- 48:52Speaker 4: you don't get a bowl game, like there isn't a
- 48:55Speaker 4: neutral site game. Yeah you're yeah, you lose on the road.
- 49:00Speaker 4: I guess I would take. I would I would take
- 49:01Speaker 4: I would take.
- 49:04Speaker 2: I agree, But I don't know. I guess I don't
- 49:06Speaker 2: know how the revenue works for that. I don't know.
- 49:08Speaker 1: Good point, I don't know.
- 49:09Speaker 4: You know, because they are you gonna limit fans like
- 49:12Speaker 4: if it was a Nebraska game, are you still only
- 49:15Speaker 4: gonna have the one fans section and like everything else
- 49:17Speaker 4: is going to be red?
- 49:21Speaker 2: Then you there's there's a now the money is becoming
- 49:24Speaker 2: more of it.
- 49:24Speaker 4: There becomes a Hey, I want the revenue share from
- 49:27Speaker 4: this game, and.
- 49:29Speaker 1: I'm sure that it was talked about before. I guess
- 49:31Speaker 1: I always one of the details behind it, like what
- 49:34Speaker 1: is going on behind the scenes there. But I'm excited
- 49:37Speaker 1: for the playoffs overall, It's gonna be fun again. Perfect
- 49:41Speaker 1: year for it where there has not been any dominant teams,
- 49:44Speaker 1: there's not a heavy favorite. I think anybody has a
- 49:47Speaker 1: chance to win it. It makes it exciting, it makes
- 49:50Speaker 1: all the games exciting to watch. Like I said, future
- 49:54Speaker 1: or this year have been a fun one to even
- 49:55Speaker 1: open it up more because I do think that Ole Miss, Alabama, Miami, Miami,
- 50:00Speaker 1: those teams all could potentially win it too. They're good
- 50:03Speaker 1: enough to.
- 50:05Speaker 5: But most years, I think twelve is a good number
- 50:07Speaker 5: for the teams that have a chance to win it.
- 50:10Speaker 4: But always going to be a third team seed. There
- 50:12Speaker 4: will always be a thirteen seed.
- 50:14Speaker 1: I will say this given the the anil talk that
- 50:18Speaker 1: we just had in transfer portal and things continue to
- 50:20Speaker 1: be spread out, maybe this is the new normal too,
- 50:22Speaker 1: and we're just constantly going to see everything be leveled
- 50:27Speaker 1: out as much as it can be in college football,
- 50:30Speaker 1: which I think helps someone like Nebraska like I think
- 50:34Speaker 1: it does too, you know, have a one off year,
- 50:37Speaker 1: make a run and make the playoffs. Like I think
- 50:40Speaker 1: that helps spreading out because you're you. You are now
- 50:44Speaker 1: make it tougher because weekend and a week out you're
- 50:46Speaker 1: playing a good team, so you got to find a
- 50:48Speaker 1: way to win close games.
- 50:50Speaker 3: But I think I think everybody said that it would
- 50:54Speaker 3: kill the regular season I think was dead wrong because
- 50:57Speaker 3: it gives teams a lot more who like you can have.
- 51:01Speaker 3: You can have one or two lost now and still.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Game in the championship game. It's like, oh, we're playing
- 51:07Speaker 2: for play.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Yeah that that AC title game would not have mattered
- 51:11Speaker 3: last year, but.
- 51:14Speaker 1: A three loss AC title team usually doesn't happen. True, Yeah,
- 51:19Speaker 1: but it probably will be more cover now it happened. Yes,
- 51:23Speaker 1: it happened because you know, the talent in the A
- 51:25Speaker 1: c C.
- 51:26Speaker 3: Was very love spread out.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Last culturable topic conversation here, you gotta do it, Scott
- 51:36Speaker 1: Frosty back to U c F once again, Dak reporting
- 51:42Speaker 1: and sharing that with me first, Uh thoughts good for him.
- 51:49Speaker 2: Hopefully it works out. Hopefully's in a better spot.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Do you want it to work out to the level
- 51:58Speaker 1: I don't want to be better than us.
- 52:00Speaker 2: But I don't need to see him go twelve and h.
- 52:02Speaker 2: I don't need to see that.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Never leieve what you love?
- 52:06Speaker 2: If he goes eight and four nine three?
- 52:08Speaker 1: Yeah? Do you want it to work out? Do you
- 52:10Speaker 1: think it will work out?
- 52:11Speaker 5: Those are two questions.
- 52:13Speaker 2: I don't think it's going to work out.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I would like I guess if I say workout, I'm
- 52:19Speaker 1: gonna say, like, you know, while he's there making college
- 52:22Speaker 1: football playoff like type of deal, like going nine and
- 52:24Speaker 1: three and making it.
- 52:25Speaker 2: I could see that happening.
- 52:27Speaker 4: But I don't think, like if I were to give
- 52:30Speaker 4: it odds, i'd say probably sixty.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Eight point three percent that it doesn't work out.
- 52:38Speaker 3: I think I think there was a good shot it
- 52:40Speaker 3: works out, like he's he's a proven to it once
- 52:43Speaker 3: and I I think.
- 52:46Speaker 2: And then what happened? He did it once?
- 52:48Speaker 3: And then what he came here and went off?
- 52:54Speaker 1: But okay, Dak, tell me, tell me why why do
- 52:58Speaker 1: you think it worked out once? And why do you
- 53:00Speaker 1: think it can work out again? But it couldn't work
- 53:02Speaker 1: in Nebraska? Tell me why.
- 53:05Speaker 3: He came here? And I think I think he was
- 53:10Speaker 3: ahead of him, like his head got him too big here. Yeah,
- 53:14Speaker 3: I don't think. I don't think he was that focused
- 53:16Speaker 3: here on the actual football part.
- 53:20Speaker 2: I think he's a good offensive mind, and I can
- 53:21Speaker 2: work in.
- 53:22Speaker 3: The big twelve. Yeah why why now?
- 53:25Speaker 1: Though, we'll work for him back in Florida.
- 53:29Speaker 2: M hm, I don't think it would.
- 53:31Speaker 3: Da great offensive mind big twelve, Like you said, I think,
- 53:39Speaker 3: and I also think the inn I l air which
- 53:42Speaker 3: he had, I guess he had a little bit here
- 53:43Speaker 3: in Nebraska. I think it's better that he took off
- 53:47Speaker 3: that three years and refocused on football in his life,
- 53:52Speaker 3: basically because I and I think he's I still think
- 53:55Speaker 3: he's a good coach. I just don't think that his
- 53:57Speaker 3: head was in the right space he Nebraska, like.
- 54:01Speaker 2: He's got the mcveighe coaching tree aspect. Now, why wasn't.
- 54:05Speaker 5: Head in the right place in Nebraska?
- 54:08Speaker 3: I don't know, I was not he is.
- 54:13Speaker 4: I mean, there's just a level of God complex when
- 54:16Speaker 4: you come, you're the you're the savior, You're the returning home.
- 54:20Speaker 2: All of your buddies are here. I can see how
- 54:23Speaker 2: that could that could seems.
- 54:24Speaker 3: Like, yeah, it's got a little bit too big, like
- 54:26Speaker 3: I said, said and just didn't he thought there was
- 54:30Speaker 3: no way he ever.
- 54:30Speaker 1: Could get fired and tell me what causes that.
- 54:35Speaker 3: The fans like he he definitely got no shot. I'll
- 54:40Speaker 3: ever get fired from the school and tell the end.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Brought in at the quote unquote savior and I agree
- 54:47Speaker 1: he got to him. Guys, I've been saying it a
- 54:52Speaker 1: big the big common denominator is this fan base. And
- 54:57Speaker 1: I'm not saying I don't know how to fix it
- 54:59Speaker 1: or what the solution is, but the he said it.
- 55:02Speaker 1: The pressure if I want him to go win at
- 55:09Speaker 1: ECF and just say yep.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Like I messed up.
- 55:14Speaker 1: No, I'm a good coach, and he will. He will
- 55:17Speaker 1: throw I've heard through the grapevine that he is just
- 55:22Speaker 1: dogging on Nebraska and everything about the administration and the
- 55:27Speaker 1: program and everything. I hope it works so that we
- 55:31Speaker 1: can identify. Everybody can go, why in the hell can
- 55:34Speaker 1: could he not do it?
- 55:35Speaker 3: Well?
- 55:35Speaker 1: Guess what, people, It's because of It's because of the fans.
- 55:37Speaker 1: It's because of the unrealistic talking, hyping expectations, everything that
- 55:44Speaker 1: goes with it. That just puts a guy like that
- 55:46Speaker 1: on a pedestal and it now becomes about something other
- 55:50Speaker 1: than putting your head down and working your ass off.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Figuring out a win. Gates rules the talker. I wish
- 55:56Speaker 1: some of our coaches have put their head down, shut up,
- 55:58Speaker 1: and just work. I think Dame as doing that. I
- 56:01Speaker 1: think Dana is saying this is a you know, this
- 56:02Speaker 1: is funny, like whatever I'm gonna work. I hope it
- 56:07Speaker 1: works out at UC if I'm rooting for it, because
- 56:09Speaker 1: I think it would identify that there's a bigger problem
- 56:12Speaker 1: here than what people want to admit, and that is
- 56:15Speaker 1: the entire realm of Husker football, this thing that we've
- 56:20Speaker 1: created as fans, and it's putting this extra layer of
- 56:27Speaker 1: cloud over everything.
- 56:30Speaker 4: And again, it didn't end at Nebraska because we didn't
- 56:33Speaker 4: like we all wanted it to work, all right, we
- 56:36Speaker 4: all like he left because of performance and it wasn't
- 56:40Speaker 4: like ill will like, but it's just like you didn't
- 56:43Speaker 4: get it done.
- 56:44Speaker 2: We wanted this to work, really, we wanted it so
- 56:46Speaker 2: badly and just and he.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Knows he was defeated.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yep.
- 56:50Speaker 1: When he left you could tell in the press conferences.
- 56:52Speaker 1: And then you know in year four he did he
- 56:54Speaker 1: did what we're doing now. I mean, if you want to,
- 56:56Speaker 1: if you want to say it, like you can just
- 56:58Speaker 1: see the stage we're at with Matt rule. You want
- 57:00Speaker 1: to compare it to the Scott Frost Mike Riley like,
- 57:02Speaker 1: we are in the all right, Matt rule. You tried
- 57:05Speaker 1: what you wanted to do for two years failed, Let's
- 57:10Speaker 1: bring in some people. I'm not saying I think the
- 57:13Speaker 1: Frost one was forced by administration. This one, I think
- 57:15Speaker 1: maybe it was a little more rule from what I
- 57:17Speaker 1: can tell, which is good, which is good, and basically said,
- 57:20Speaker 1: all right, now let's revamp the offense and let's bring
- 57:23Speaker 1: in a whole new coaching staff. This one a little
- 57:25Speaker 1: bit not by choice. With twenty White leaving, you can
- 57:28Speaker 1: see where we're at. The whole Scott Frost thing. It's hard,
- 57:35Speaker 1: Like I think Husker fans are going to naturally not
- 57:37Speaker 1: root for him, right, They're gonna say you suck because
- 57:39Speaker 1: you failed, and.
- 57:41Speaker 2: And you don't want to see you don't see your
- 57:44Speaker 2: ex girlfriend and the hotter guy, Like that's just not
- 57:47Speaker 2: what That's the analogy.
- 57:49Speaker 1: It is a great analogy. And all of a sudden,
- 57:50Speaker 1: you see f in two years is playing in the
- 57:52Speaker 1: Comfortaball Playoff, and here we are at six and six
- 57:54Speaker 1: or five and seven, missing the Bowl and maybe hiring
- 57:56Speaker 1: a new coach, like, we don't want that to happen.
- 57:59Speaker 1: But I think think that the big picture is Okay,
- 58:02Speaker 1: Scott Frost made it work there, couldn't get it done here,
- 58:05Speaker 1: and then made it work there again, Why like, why
- 58:09Speaker 1: why is that even possible? Well, we said at UCF
- 58:12Speaker 1: when we were talking about Scott Frost when he's at Nebraska,
- 58:15Speaker 1: you don't.
- 58:16Speaker 3: You don't.
- 58:16Speaker 1: You don't have a billion published publisher publishers writing about you.
- 58:22Speaker 5: Your recruiting is very free and open. You have the ability.
- 58:25Speaker 5: Frost can go golfing at random Orlando golf courses and
- 58:29Speaker 5: not get called out and judged for drinking and boozing.
- 58:32Speaker 5: He can do his own thing. He's not in the
- 58:34Speaker 5: spotlight when he's at you, he can just coach. But
- 58:37Speaker 5: when he's here, we made him the next Golden Child.
- 58:41Speaker 5: And again it wasn't he was. We made him into that.
- 58:44Speaker 5: The media and fans made him into the Golden Child.
- 58:47Speaker 5: I'm not saying that was wrong, but we did.
- 58:49Speaker 1: We made it like that he is the savior, and
- 58:53Speaker 1: it took away from what potentially he knows is how
- 58:56Speaker 1: to coach football in an offense, and our offense was
- 59:01Speaker 1: very bad. Under shot Frost just like it isn't.
- 59:04Speaker 4: Another reason why it might not go the same as
- 59:06Speaker 4: you see as Big Twelve. Now, well you know he
- 59:10Speaker 4: wasn't there were in the Big twelve, so that is difference.
- 59:13Speaker 5: That will make it even more telling though if he
- 59:15Speaker 5: is able to win.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Now telling I wasn't on the podcast when Frost is here,
- 59:21Speaker 3: and it sounds like you guys were hopped off the
- 59:23Speaker 3: train quicker than a lot of other when he when
- 59:26Speaker 3: they was going bad. Huscar fans would never admit it.
- 59:28Speaker 5: Like so, same thing with what's happening right now with
- 59:32Speaker 5: the Rule Dak.
- 59:33Speaker 1: I think everybody eventually got to a point where they
- 59:38Speaker 1: were done with Frost and wanted to move on. I
- 59:41Speaker 1: would say that I was probably on the leading edge
- 59:44Speaker 1: of that or swards the front. Austin probably fell a
- 59:47Speaker 1: little more in the middle, and there are some people
- 59:49Speaker 1: that hung on till the very end, until the Southern
- 59:54Speaker 1: or Southern even and said, okay, it's done. I think
- 59:59Speaker 1: that it's a very true statement. I'll say it with Rule,
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: I'm not there, but I'm pretty damn close.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: As far as wasting time with one two three years
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: under this regime with Matt Rurl I'm not there yet,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: and I probably there's nothing that could happen. I think
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: between now, well, yeah, there's one thing could happen between
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: now and the start of next season that would take
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: me off of it. But as long as he's here,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: I think I'm still there. But early next year and
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: as we start the year, that's gonna be very telling.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: And I think there's probably a handful of fans that
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: are with me. But I'm telling you, from now until
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: the first game next year, regardless of the Bowl game outcome,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: the hype and the juice and all that's going to
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: come and Rule is going to do a tremendous job
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: of convincing fans that we are going to be good
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: next year. That's what what he should do, right, That's
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: what that's that's his job that he should do. But
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: just don't get blinded by it. Don't get sucked in
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: until you start seeing results. That's my caution, because we
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: saw what happened this year again when we you know,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: I was guilty of it, even though I said I
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: wasn't gonna do it ud.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: Season, you said ten ten that was the bar.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: So it happened like just well, we're also five and oh,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: at that point. Come to find out, those teams were
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: very good and it turned out pretty good. That was one.
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: But so at one point though and sec would you
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: maybe that's what Nebraska is.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: So to that point, we talked about this.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: A month ago six and sixteen Max.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: A month ago, it was one of the big time
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: writers said, last thing for huscar fans to do is
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: just accept mediocrelia, like that's the last thing for us
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: to do instead of wishing. Unfortunately, there's that. I don't.
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I don't think it's ever going to happen. I unless
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the only way that that could happen for me is
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: if we got like a professional team in Omaha football team.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: To move your passion somewhere else and my.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: Passion gets shifted. I've tried, and I do follow case
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: state along, but it's not here. But I can't. You can't.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I've said that before. Like you can, you can joke
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and laugh and try to shift your focus and fandom
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: towards something else. There's nothing in the state of Nebraska
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: that you're going to be able to do that with.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Like you can. You can try all you want, but
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: the emotions are not going to let you do it.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Now apathy is a different thing that I think everyone's
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: level of care has changed, especially from the the more
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: casual fans that it's not Saturday is not about the game,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: from when you wake up to when you go to bed.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: I'm still at that phase, like whether I whether I
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: like to admit that or not. But more and more
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: people that I'm around, they're not there anymore, like they
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: would rather spend as little time on it because that's
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: what they how much they care about it anymore, which
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: is sad. But that's where things are headed with Husker
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: football unless things get turned around.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Well, end on a high note.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Volleyball Sweet sixteen Okay, didn't say else. I don't have
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: any other football No, I saw the Heisman stuff. No
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: surprises there. I mean, I feel like Hunter is.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Going to win. Yep, yeah, so uh yeah.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: Volleyball Sweet sixteen two sweeps looked good.
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: I think we won that one set against Florida and
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: m was at twenty five to three.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: Great, uh yeah, play dates on Friday night and then
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: if we win, we play Wisconsin on Sunday.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Most likely Wisconsin most right, most likely got to Texas
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: A and m Old Trev Alberts coming back home.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: If we have to play freaking Trev Alberts Texas A
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: and M and we've lose to them, I'm done. I'm
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: an I'm an aggy fan.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: That's it. Alberts won, I'm just.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Kidding and crazy.
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: I don't want to talk about basketball, So let's not
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: even bring that up.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that was rough. You brought it up. You brought
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: it up. The ladies are doing well though, I mean
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: outside of the one loss.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: That was fun to watch yesterday defeated Minnesota.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: Yeah, that's all the good Husker news. I mean, have
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: we did we talk about the recruiting class at all?
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: Was that that was this week?
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Wasn't it? So we got all twenty of the people
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: we wanted, So I mean that says something about rule Yeah.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mentioned the twentieth. I just I'm I've
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: just never been a big recruiting hype guy. I'm like, great,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: we got some guys. Probably.
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: If you're saying that's the draft now, I mean, that's
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: that's what you're saying, is this is more important than
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: the creation.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Yeah. But what's funny though, is I don't get hyped
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: over the draft either, like until they start getting to
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: the teams and they start playing.
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: Like fantasy football is a prime example.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Like the draft is fun, but trust me, in my
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: dynasty leagues that I'm in, I don't get excited over
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: these players because I have missed on a lot of
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: guys that I've drafted one, two, and three in dynasty
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: football and they have done nothing. So I'm like the
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: draft is like great, Like we got some people I
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: drafted my I drafted Trey Lance, Awesome. Guess what Trey
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Lance has done? Jack shit? I drafted JK Dobbins, Great,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Guess what JK Dobbins has gotten hurt every goddamn year
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: since I had him. Like it's just one of those
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: things that like I don't want to get excited over
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: something that I haven't seen him produce.
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: I got Marvin Harrison this year. Every one overall pick
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: solid year.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: He's got lights lights out guy. They thought he was
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: gonna be.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: So like we'll see Caleb Williams and got him too,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Like we'll see what happens. Is just something I don't
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: get too excited about until.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: Took that one. Oh shut no. That's that's why I
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: like the port better than recruiting nowadays, because you saw
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: these guys play you most likely know what you're getting. Now,
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: you always get a DJU come to your school like
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: Florida State where you think you're getting someone good and
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: then that shipwreck happens. But yep, yeah, Je Sims, you're
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: gonna be national Chile. Jeff Sims, right, there could be
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: what what if he does come in and lead to
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: the title, like the starring quarterback gets hurt and he
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: leads him the championship.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Good for him. You know it didn't work out here
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: and that was mostly his fault, the.
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: Same as price you guys rooting for Jeff Sims.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: M hmm.
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: We're good people. We want people to succeed. I don't
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: want people to fail unless they work for Colorado.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: All right, Well, yeah, we're back to weekly episodes here
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: now too, so we're gonna be recording Monday night Tuesday
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: morning releases from here on out for the rest of
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: season six. Yeah, check us out on YouTube. You can
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: watch us there ad free, or you can continue to
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: listen to us on the podcast apps or there are
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: a lot of ads and yeah, find us on Character
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Chronicles dot com. Do I say that already?
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Yep, that's very good name.
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: So we're there now too cool way back.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Next week Bowl game preview Boston College the Eagles.
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: I'm excited. I really am excited.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: GB Hard that'll be fun. Were I'm not more. You're done.
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: That started t start, that started
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: Sh
