- 0:04You got to make sure your summer isn't stopping
- 0:06your podcast and your podcast isn't stopping
- 0:09your summer. Hey, welcome to another episode
- 0:11of Abby the Podcast Lady. If you're watching
- 0:13the video version of this, you might notice that
- 0:15we're doing something a little different. We're
- 0:17hanging out in my backyard. It is a beautiful
- 0:20day in Minnesota. You might be hearing that it
- 0:22is a little windy. I'm going to try to edit out
- 0:24as much wind noise as possible with the Adobe
- 0:26podcast program that I use. affiliate link down
- 0:30in the show notes below but I wanted to do something
- 0:33a little bit different because summer is so busy
- 0:35and is totally in full effect here in Minnesota
- 0:38I've noticed with all of my local clients videos
- 0:41and editing files are getting to me a little
- 0:44bit later than they usually do we're a little
- 0:48behind the eight ball and I tried making sure
- 0:49everyone was as prepared for the summer as we
- 0:52possibly could but I mean you can only do so
- 0:54much at some point you do need to let them take
- 0:58initiative and make sure that they get stuff
- 0:59to their editor on time. And everyone has been
- 1:02very good and very understanding that turnaround
- 1:04time is not going to be as fast as they maybe
- 1:06want it to be. I can't edit things overnight,
- 1:08but I wanted to touch on that topic on my podcast
- 1:12this week, especially since this show talks to
- 1:14you, the person who's starting a podcast, the
- 1:17person who maybe doesn't have a full -time editor,
- 1:19the person who's... doing it themselves and just
- 1:21trying to figure out a workflow that works for
- 1:23them and their life and their busy schedule in
- 1:25the summer because let's be real if you live
- 1:27in the midwest in the summer it's busy we try
- 1:30to cram a year's worth of fun into a matter of
- 1:33months because that's just it's the only good
- 1:36time of year around here otherwise the weather
- 1:38is bad it's cold and snowy like i don't necessarily
- 1:42love nine months of the year in minnesota but
- 1:44these three months that we have of summer are
- 1:46just absolutely glorious and perfect so we try
- 1:49to take advantage of it as much as we can and
- 1:51that means things get put on the back burner
- 1:53and a lot of times that thing is a podcast. It
- 1:56gets kicked to the side because it's like, eh,
- 1:58we'll worry about that once Labor Day comes back
- 2:01around. We'll just enjoy our summer, which is
- 2:03fine. And that's great. If that works for you,
- 2:06that works for you. But in all reality, podcasting
- 2:09is a long game. It is something you need to stay
- 2:11so consistent with. You are serving your audience.
- 2:14You're probably trying to establish an audience
- 2:16if you're just starting out. And it's something
- 2:18that you need to stay on top of. So today I want
- 2:21to touch on the fact that your summer shouldn't
- 2:23derail your podcast and your podcast shouldn't.
- 2:25derail your summer what do i mean by your summer
- 2:28shouldn't derail your podcast i mean that you
- 2:30still need to prioritize it if it is something
- 2:33that you truly care about if it is a brand you're
- 2:35trying to build if this is the marketing strategy
- 2:37behind your business you need to still stay on
- 2:40top of it the people that are winning in q4 are
- 2:43the ones that don't take q2 and three off so
- 2:47make sure that you're staying on top of things
- 2:48make sure you're batching content if you want
- 2:50an easy way to batch content in the summer months
- 2:54mini -series. Mini -series, mini -series, mini
- 2:57-series. Do a mini -series in the summer because
- 2:59that is going to keep you on top of your game.
- 3:02What you can do is you can take one broad topic,
- 3:04break it down into three miniature topics that
- 3:08all serve that one larger topic. Heck, even turn
- 3:10it into five topic mini -series. That's going
- 3:13to give you a month's worth of content. And chances
- 3:16are good you can record it all at once. So if
- 3:18you're looking for a way to stay consistent this
- 3:20summer and not let your summer derail your podcast,
- 3:23do a mini series, do a couple of different mini
- 3:25series. Chances are good you can come up with
- 3:27two major ideas and three subtopics on those
- 3:31ideas. That'll get you through most of the summer
- 3:33in all reality, especially if you decide like
- 3:35maybe you want to do even every other week podcasts
- 3:38in the summer because you do not have time for
- 3:40every week. Great. Every other week and you're
- 3:42doing a mini series, there's your whole summer
- 3:44worth of content right there. And that way your
- 3:46summer isn't derailing your podcast. So definitely
- 3:48consider doing a mini series. If that is something
- 3:52that will serve you. What do I mean by do not
- 3:55let your podcast derail your summer? All of the
- 3:58things I've had to say about making sure you're
- 4:00still doing your podcast. If it's just not feasible
- 4:03for you this time of year, you can't be hard
- 4:05on yourself for not doing it. Like I am. the
- 4:10poster child for being hard on myself I am naturally
- 4:13a achiever I'm a high achieving woman I'm the
- 4:16eldest daughter I'm the oldest granddaughter
- 4:18on one side I just feel the weight of the world
- 4:21on my shoulders most of the time because that's
- 4:23just who I am as a human and I have even this
- 4:28episode I'm recording right now it comes out
- 4:30in 12 hours almost to the minute I still got
- 4:34to edit it I still got to make the social clips
- 4:36but I'm still doing it because I know it's important
- 4:39and I know I want to stay consistent this summer
- 4:42with my podcast but if something popped up where
- 4:45it's like I have a bigger fire to put out I would
- 4:48need to put my own show on the back burner and
- 4:50that is just part of the summer season we are
- 4:53all so busy because we're trying to soak it all
- 4:55in and make sure that if you kids make sure they
- 4:58have memories go on family trips i'm a wedding
- 5:00dj as well so this is my busy season for my wedding
- 5:04dj business and my photo booth business and my
- 5:06video guest book business like this is a really
- 5:09hard time a year for me to stay on top of my
- 5:11own podcast but i know how important it is for
- 5:15my marketing materials because i don't really
- 5:16market my podcasting business other than posting
- 5:20clips of my own podcast which i know is unhinged
- 5:23but it's the whole cobbler's child is the last
- 5:25to have shoes I still know how important it is
- 5:28to get this show out, but if something were to
- 5:30pop up tonight and I had a client emergency to
- 5:32put out or if I had a music bingo gig that I
- 5:35booked and I had to be somewhere else, this would
- 5:38have been put on the back burner. And that's
- 5:39okay because I would have just turned around
- 5:42and said, you know what? Not this week, but next
- 5:44week. We're not going to let next week slide.
- 5:46I think that's the biggest thing. It's like you
- 5:48can let it slide a little bit, but you can't
- 5:50let it slide entirely. You can't push it totally
- 5:52off your plate. You still got to eat that vegetable
- 5:54at some point. But it's important and you got
- 5:58to have some flexibility and not be so hard on
- 6:00yourself and still make sure things get done
- 6:02and honor your commitments at the same time.
- 6:05Summer is so fun and I live for it. I am a Leo
- 6:08through and through. I think. August is the best
- 6:12month of the entire year. I live for the summer
- 6:15months. I love sunning myself in the backyard.
- 6:18I'm like a lizard in a terrarium. This hot, humid
- 6:20weather we've been having in Minnesota is speaking
- 6:23to my soul. I absolutely live for it. But at
- 6:25the same time, I know that there's still responsibilities.
- 6:28I can't just turn everything off and expect results
- 6:32to come from not doing something. That doesn't
- 6:35make any sense. I know that if I want to have
- 6:38a thriving business and keep marketing myself,
- 6:40as the podcast lady, I need to keep putting out
- 6:43shows. I need to keep making fresh content. I
- 6:45need to keep making new episodes. I need to make
- 6:47those social clips. I need to share it on Pinterest.
- 6:49I need to write my blogs. There's things that
- 6:52need to be done. So with that said. Things happen
- 6:55and things need to be pushed and slid and schedules
- 6:58need to be adjusted because of all the other
- 7:00fun opportunities summer brings. And that's fine.
- 7:02You just got to make sure that you stick with
- 7:04it as much as you can. So short and sweet episode
- 7:06today. I just wanted to do something that I've
- 7:08been thinking about because it's obviously hitting
- 7:11a nerve for a bunch of my clients as well as
- 7:14myself. Don't let summer ruin your podcast and
- 7:18don't let your podcast ruin your summer. thank
- 7:20you so much for tuning in if you need help with
- 7:23anything when it comes to podcasting whether
- 7:25that's figuring out how to get the wind noise
- 7:28out of your videos and recording on the go I
- 7:32can help you with that if you're looking for
- 7:33help with editing to take that off your plate
- 7:35for the summer I can offer that as well I still
- 7:38have room on my roster for more clients if you're
- 7:40just looking for general advice when it comes
- 7:42to podcasting if you just want to pick my brain
- 7:44that is an option as well I actually have a whole
- 7:47page on my website dedicated to the picking my
- 7:50brain side of the consulting work that I do so
- 7:52if you're interested in that be sure to check
- 7:54out that page all the links are down in the show
- 7:56notes as well but I hope your summer is off to
- 7:58a great start mine has been so much fun like
- 8:01I said it's wedding DJ season this current weekend
- 8:04we are going into in the middle of June it'll
- 8:06be my third weekend in a row of wedding DJing
- 8:10out of five in a row that I'm doing total I'm
- 8:12actually like As I'm recording this, I just came
- 8:14from my meeting with bride and groom number five,
- 8:16which is family of mine. So that'll be fun. But
- 8:19yeah, it's a busy season. There's a lot of fun
- 8:21stuff happening, but don't let it totally derail.
- 8:24your goals that you set for Q4. It sounds crazy
- 8:27to be thinking about the end of the year in the
- 8:29middle of it, but it's true. You gotta make those
- 8:32money moves when you can. So again, if you have
- 8:34questions, hit me up. Let's chat podcasting.
- 8:36I'm Abby, the podcast lady. I can talk about
- 8:38podcasting all day, every day, and I would love
- 8:40to build that connection with you. So thank you
- 8:43so much. I will catch you in next week's episode
- 8:45if I don't let it slide. Caveat to this episode
- 8:49because this is something that I wanted to touch
- 8:51on and forgot to add in in the initial episodes.
- 8:53But I am actually recording this on a DJI Mic
- 8:57Mini and a Extra Edge Pro action camera. That
- 9:01is what I'm doing this podcast on. You do not
- 9:03need a fancy gear for your podcast this summer.
- 9:06If you are on the go and you're busy, use whatever
- 9:09you got. If you got a quiet room and a cell phone
- 9:11and the voice memos app, that works great. If
- 9:14you have an action cam and a wireless microphone
- 9:16and a... tripod in your backyard. Also works
- 9:19great. There's a lot you can do when you're on
- 9:21the go this summer. So do not let the, I don't
- 9:24have the right studio setup. I don't have the
- 9:26right gear. I'm not bringing my whole podcasting
- 9:28setup with me on family vacation this summer.
- 9:31That's an excuse. We're not here for excuses.
- 9:33Use what you got. Use what's available. Use what's
- 9:36easy to make your podcast this summer. Literally,
- 9:39I've done shows just with my cell phone. All
- 9:42you need is your cell phone in a quiet room.
- 9:43Honestly, what I'm doing now is, I don't know,
- 9:46is it overkill? I came from my studio. in downtown
- 9:48st. Cloud I could have used my studio instead
- 9:51what I'm doing is plugging in my wireless microphone
- 9:53into my action camera and using what I got in
- 9:56the backyard so do not let your gear and your
- 9:59setup be your hindrance to staying up to date
- 10:02with your podcast this summer okay I think that's
- 10:04the last thing I had to say I'll get you next
- 10:06week thanks bye
