Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kevin Gray from the UK joins us Hellogavin either andrew
- 0:03Speaker 1: awful lot of Syrians, awful lot of Syrians in the UK.
- 0:06Speaker 1: So where is the UK standing on the Syrian issue
- 0:09Speaker 1: right now?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Well, they have decided to pause decisions on further Syrian
- 0:14Speaker 2: asylum claims after Basha Alisade was overthrown. The government's saying
- 0:18Speaker 2: the situation's moving fast. Some people are returning to Syria
- 0:22Speaker 2: following recent developments. But there's another theory. With so many
- 0:25Speaker 2: refugees out of Syria, some may actually, you know, think no,
- 0:29Speaker 2: actually that I'm going to try and make the journey anyway.
- 0:32Speaker 2: So there's almost fear, as it were, of a second wave.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Between twenty eleven and twenty twenty one, more than thirty
- 0:38Speaker 2: thousand Syrians were granted asylum in the UK. There was
- 0:41Speaker 2: a big program to allow them in. However, more than
- 0:44Speaker 2: nine thousand Syrians have also been picked up on the coast,
- 0:48Speaker 2: entering the country illegally, having crossed the channel in small boats. Indeed,
- 0:52Speaker 2: Syrians accounted for the fifth largest number of silent claims
- 0:56Speaker 2: in the year ending of September this year, and almost
- 0:59Speaker 2: all those who rec question asylum have been given the
- 1:02Speaker 2: right to stay. So the big question is now, with
- 1:04Speaker 2: this pausing, what will happen after that? And will some
- 1:07Speaker 2: of those some thirty forty thousand still estimated to be
- 1:11Speaker 2: in the UK, will they stay or will they actually
- 1:14Speaker 2: decide to go back to Syria.
- 1:15Speaker 1: And so that explains why you see just incredible pictures
- 1:17Speaker 1: out a Trafagar Square of celebrations after what happened. But
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's the big question for the world, what will happen next. Meanwhile,
- 1:23Speaker 1: speaking of migrants, what's happening in Germany?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, believe it or not, Facilitating people smigling is not
- 1:30Speaker 2: technically illegal in Germany currently if that country that their
- 1:36Speaker 2: third country is outside the EU, and of course, following
- 1:39Speaker 2: Brexit that means the UK. So it is thought that
- 1:42Speaker 2: actually Germany has inadvertently become a central hub to the
- 1:46Speaker 2: people smiggling networks, using Germany as sort of warehousing for
- 1:50Speaker 2: boats and then getting the boats to the French shores
- 1:54Speaker 2: northern France in order to get across to the UK.
- 1:56Speaker 2: But Germany has finally agreed to tighten its law to
- 1:59Speaker 2: make it much easier to prosecute those helping to smuggle
- 2:02Speaker 2: migrants to the UK. A new plan has green agreed
- 2:06Speaker 2: by the two countries in the past. Our new Prime
- 2:08Speaker 2: Minister as of July Sekirstarmers said that many of the
- 2:12Speaker 2: previous plans by the previous governments simply weren't workable. He
- 2:15Speaker 2: said he was going to go after the people smugglers,
- 2:18Speaker 2: try to get cooperation from the rest in Europe and
- 2:20Speaker 2: perhaps this is a sign that this may help. However,
- 2:23Speaker 2: once you cover off one tentacle of these networks, have
- 2:26Speaker 2: seems that at least another one or two seem to grow.
- 2:29Speaker 2: So I'm not quite sure what effect this will have,
- 2:31Speaker 2: but so far andrew more than thirty three thousand across
- 2:34Speaker 2: the English Channel by small boats into the UK illegally.
- 2:38Speaker 2: That's considerably higher than the twenty nine thousand from all
- 2:41Speaker 2: of last year.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Good Sir Kevin Gray from the UK.
