- 0:25Welcome back listeners to Sandman's Stories Presents
- 0:28Folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:30story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:34Today we are back in the book of Louisiana folklore written down
- 0:36by Elsie Fortier. In today's story, we'll learn
- 0:40about being careful with your choices and how choosing a dirty
- 0:43egg can save your life. OK, let's begin.
- 0:48The devil's marriage. Once there was a pretty young
- 0:53girl, but she was very proud, and every time the young man
- 0:56came to court her, she found a pretext to send them away.
- 1:01One was too small, another too tall, another had red hair.
- 1:05In short, she refused all her suitors.
- 1:09One day her mother said to her, My daughter, you see that tall,
- 1:13tall tree in the middle of the river?
- 1:15I'm going to put this pumpkin on the smallest branch at the top
- 1:18of the tree. And the young man who will be
- 1:20able to climb up and catch the pumpkin will be your husband.
- 1:25The daughter said she had no objections, so they put a notice
- 1:27in the newspapers. The next week a crowd of young
- 1:30men presented themselves, and among them one who was
- 1:33beautifully dressed and exceedingly handsome.
- 1:36He was the devil, but nobody knew him, the younger told her
- 1:40mother. I wish he would fetch the
- 1:42pumpkin. All of the young men climbed on
- 1:47the tree, but none succeeded in reaching the pumpkin.
- 1:50When the turn of the devil came, in one minute he was up the tree
- 1:53and had the pumpkin in his hand. As soon as he was down, he said
- 1:57to the young girl, Come now, come with me to my house.
- 2:03The girl put on her best dress and went away with the devil.
- 2:06On the road they met a man who said to the devil, Give me my
- 2:09cravat and my collar which I had lent to you.
- 2:13The devil took off his cravat and his collar and said, Here,
- 2:16take your old cravat and your old collar.
- 2:20A little further on, another man saw the devil and told him, Give
- 2:23me my shirt which I had lent to you.
- 2:26The devil took off his shirt and said, here, here, take your old
- 2:30shirt a little further. He saw another man who said to
- 2:34him, Give me my cloak which I lent to you.
- 2:38The devil took off his cloak and said, here, here, take your old
- 2:42cloak. A little further on a man asked
- 2:46for his trousers, and then another one for his hat.
- 2:49The devil took off his trousers and the hat and said, Here,
- 2:52here, take your old trousers and your old hat.
- 2:56He came down from his carriage and disappeared for a few
- 2:58minutes. Then he returned as well dressed
- 3:00as before. The young lady was beginning to
- 3:03be very frightened when they met another man who said, Give me my
- 3:07horses which I had lent to you. The devil gave him four horses
- 3:11and said to his wife, Get down from the carriage and hit
- 3:14yourself to it. She drew the carriage as far as
- 3:18the devil's house, and was so frightened that her heart was
- 3:20almost in her mouth. The devil entered his garden.
- 3:24He said to his wife, Remain here with my mother.
- 3:29As soon as he was gone, the mother said to the young lady,
- 3:32Ah, my daughter, you have taken a bad husband.
- 3:36You have married the devil. The poor girl was so sorry that
- 3:40she did not know what to do, and she said to the old woman, Can't
- 3:45you tell me how I can run away? The old woman replied, yes, wait
- 3:49until tomorrow morning, but come, let me show you something.
- 3:53She opened the door of a little room and said, look my daughter.
- 3:58The girl looked in the room and what did she see?
- 4:00A number of women hanging from a nail.
- 4:03She was so frightened that she asked the old woman if she could
- 4:06not hide her somewhere until the next morning.
- 4:09The woman said yes, but let me tell you how you can escape from
- 4:13here. When the devil tells you to give
- 4:16one sack of corn to his rooster which wakes him up in the
- 4:18morning, you will give him 3 sacks so that he eats more and
- 4:22does not crow so early. Then you go to the chicken house
- 4:25and take 6 dirty eggs. Take care not to take clean
- 4:28eggs, that will bring you bad luck.
- 4:32The next morning the young lady gave the rooster 3 sacks corn
- 4:35while she took the eggs and ran away.
- 4:38When the rooster had finished eating his three sacks, he
- 4:40crowed, Mr. Devil, wake up, wake up, someone has run away from
- 4:45the house. The devil got up quickly and
- 4:48started to run after his wife. The poor girl looked behind her
- 4:52and saw smoke and fire. Indeed, the devil himself, she
- 4:56took an egg and broke it. A high wooden fence arose in the
- 4:59middle of the road. The devil had to return home to
- 5:03get his golden axe to cut down the fence.
- 5:06After he had broken down the fence, he took his axe to his
- 5:08house. The girl looked behind her.
- 5:12She saw smoke and fire the devil himself.
- 5:16She broke another egg and there grew an iron fence.
- 5:20The devil went home to get his golden axe and had to take it
- 5:22back. After breaking the fence, the
- 5:25girl looked again. There was fire and smoke.
- 5:28She broke another egg and a great fire rose up in the road.
- 5:32The devil went to get his jar of water to put out the fire, and
- 5:35then he had to take the jar back.
- 5:38The girl heard again a noise. It was smoke and fire.
- 5:42She threw another egg. A brick wall grew up.
- 5:45The devil went to get his golden axe and carried it back.
- 5:48After breaking the wall, the girl looked again.
- 5:51She saw fire and smoke. She broke another egg.
- 5:54A small river appeared, in which was a small canoe.
- 5:58She entered the canoe and crossed the river, and the devil
- 6:01was obliged to swim across. The girl looked again.
- 6:05She saw fire and smoke. She broke another egg and a
- 6:08large river appeared. There was a big crocodile on the
- 6:12other side of the river, warming himself in the sun.
- 6:15The girl sang. Grandmother, I pray you cross me
- 6:20over. Grandmother, I pray you save my
- 6:24life, The crocodile said. Climb on my back, my little one,
- 6:31I'll save your life. The devil saw how the girl had
- 6:35crossed the river, so he said to the crocodile.
- 6:37Cross me over, crocodile, cross me over.
- 6:41The crocodile replied. Climb on my back, I shall cross
- 6:45you over. When he reached the middle of
- 6:48the river, he dove under the water, and the devil was
- 6:51drowned. When the girl had left her
- 6:54mother's house with her husband, her mother had called to her.
- 6:57Well, my child, what do you wish me to do with your old White
- 6:59Horse? The girl said to her mother, I
- 7:03don't care what you do, put him out in the pasture and let him
- 7:05die if he wants to. However, when she crossed the
- 7:09river on the crocodile's back, she saw her old horse in the
- 7:12pasture and said to him, I pray to you, O body, save my life.
- 7:17The horse replied, Oh, now you want me to save your life?
- 7:22Didn't you tell your mother to let me die if I wanted?
- 7:25Well, climb on my back, I shall carry you now to your mother.
- 7:29The girl soon reached her mother's house.
- 7:31She got down from the horse and she kissed him, and then she
- 7:34kissed her mother. She remained at home after that
- 7:37and did not wish to marry again after having had the devil for
- 7:40her husband. The End.
- 8:09All right, I like that story. You know, there's always a bit
- 8:12of history with that. And getting married is always a
- 8:16tricky thing. You don't really know your
- 8:18partner until you get married. And even then, they can change.
- 8:22And for a long time, I mean, even now, it's still dangerous
- 8:26for women. But back before women could own
- 8:28property, before they could have credit cards, before they could
- 8:30do a lot of stuff, you were just at the mercy of your spouse.
- 8:34And that's, that's wild. And so I love these Louisiana
- 8:38stories and I like, I like the egg cracking.
- 8:42I like the having to go back and get stuff and repeating in the
- 8:45story. It was it was all really nice.
- 8:47And the horse at the end was real, real cute.
- 8:50OK. And the podcast shout out is to
- 8:52my friend, says Shira over at Legendary Africa.
- 8:56She has been super busy obtaining her PhD.
- 8:58So the storytelling has been put on pause for the moment, but
- 9:01she's a cool person and has a lot of lovely stories on tap and
- 9:05not enough African folklores in the public eye.
- 9:07So if you love her show as much as I do, go and give her a like
- 9:10a rating and a review. And the listener shout out is to
- 9:14Pilsen, Czechia. Yes, that is the Pilsen as in a
- 9:17Pilsner beer and is no longer Czechoslovakia, nor is it the
- 9:21Czech Republic. It is now Czechia.
- 9:23Pilsen was and still is an important city on the route from
- 9:26Bohemia to Bavaria. The city's castle was first
- 9:30mentioned in 976. It became famous for the beer
- 9:33brewing in 13 O 7 and never looked back.
- 9:36Sadly, the city was occupied by German forces in World War 2 and
- 9:40the entire Jewish population of 2000 people were sent to the
- 9:43concentration camp in Terezen, Germany.
- 9:46Today the city is known for its baroque architecture in Pilsen
- 9:49Urkel beer. I would love to go and try an
- 9:51adult beverage in their town square.
- 9:53I really do hope to visit there someday.
- 9:56And so to my listener in Pilsen, I say in Czech, Chikuye E dobro
- 10:00Notch. Thank you and good night.
