- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to Skin Anarchy.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: This is Jeremy Second, and I'm very excited to be sharing this brand with you today.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: I recently discovered it, and I think here at Skin Anarchy, as everyone knows, we're huge advocates for men's health, you know, in in addition to you know women's skin health.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: And I think skin is skin at the end of the day.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, the industry we're in, there's not a lot of options out there for men to really kind of get behind and and trust.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And so this brand is, you know, very special to me because as a consumer, obviously, I love that there are options, but also as a doctor, I love seeing that the the field, the area is growing.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: You know, this niche of beauty products is really growing to accommodate the male consumer and really care for the needs of the male consumer.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: So without further ado, I would love to introduce you guys to Skin Mason and its founders.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Um, the brand is founded by Dr.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Hussein Kanji, who's with us today, and as well as uh Andrew Walker.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So welcome to the show, guys.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: I'm so excited to host you.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: Thanks so much for having us, Dr.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Ekka.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Really appreciate it.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Hi, everybody thank you for coming on.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, I really have been enjoying your brand.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm a woman, and I know it originally the idea was for it to appeal to men, but as a woman, I really love the brand.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I think the science-backed nature of it really shines through, and I'd love to dive into that later.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: But Andrew, I'd love to start off with you telling us a little bit about yourself because you have a very um unique background and you know, you're a celebrity.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: So I would love to learn about you if you could kind of walk us down memory lane.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, it's uh yeah, it's crazy to hear you even say that I'm a celebrity.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: I uh dropped my kids off at school today, and uh, you know, I I uh I pick them up at the end of the day and I I I make my bed like everybody else.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: So it's uh, you know, I'm I'm kind of I'm in a I'm in a niche space that uh I've just been so blessed to be a part of and working in the the Hallmark movies and a lot of these uh holiday movies that I've been doing.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, I guess there was there was no uh specific defining moment for me that I, you know, why I wanted to start a skincare brand.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: It was more just out of necessity to fill a void.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: You know, I was I was I was constantly being disappointed with products I was using.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: They would be too abrasive, they would take too long.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: My days are long.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: I'm working sometimes 12 to 16 hour days, five days a week.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: And at the end of my day, the last thing I want to do is go through some lengthy skincare process to get my makeup off and start my day fresh the next day.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it was coming along, I was coming across a lot of mediocre mediocre products that were either too abrasive um or just took too long to use.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: So um fortunately, skincare and acting, they go hand in hand.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: And I I wear makeup constantly when I'm working, when I'm doing events or conventions.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: And uh, and so it was just something that I I need I needed out of, you know, uh out of necessity.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Uh Dr.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Kanji, if you could tell us as well, you know, what made you want to get involved with this project?
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, for for many reasons.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, first of all, it was just such a pleasure meeting Walker and bantering and chatting about the void that we have for skincare in men, but I think the skincare space in general, I love what you said when you started.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Skin is skin, it really is.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: And you know what what I what I am is I'm a scientist.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I took uh a very, you know, I'm not your traditional physician who's gonna talk to you about skin care from maybe a dermatology perspective.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I started my career in space of physiology.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: So I'm a scientist.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: I started with physiology.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I was fascinated with the human body, and the more I learned, the more I realized the less I knew.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is amazing.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: The human body is truly, truly incredible.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: And this really fueled my pursuits into the journey to learn more of the working, and I love repair.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I'm a problem solver, so that really got me excited.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: This was a problem.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Um, this is a problem that we all kind of see today, and with our skin, both men and women, but I think the approach is crowded, I think it's confused, I think you're told things that aren't true, and that's why, even before, Gina, it was so nice to talk to you and see what you guys represent in really figuring out the why, understanding the science and being particular about why you're doing certain things.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: And that was our fuel, that was my passion, that's why I got involved, you know.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: So I can speak to uh, you know, my background in science and molecular genetics and trying to sort of unravel the sort of curiosities and the workings at the cellular level, and we really applied that here and looking at skin not from sort of the top down, not from the outside in, but from the inside out, looking at what actually fuels and understands, understanding that inflammation actually causes harm, it causes chronic harm.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Having your best skin for us is having your healthiest skin, being the best version of you.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: If you're healthier, if you have that, if you're un, if you're able to stop the harm, damage, inflammation, and start the restorative process, your natural body naturally has it naturally has that.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: There's millions, trillions of things happening in this moment just to keep you in that perfect homeostasis.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Our job was to try to do that.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: So I got really excited about being involved.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: I got really excited about being able to co-create something with my buddy and partner here that solved a problem, but it did it in the right way, in a different approach, in a scientific approach.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And I'm happy to speak about all that.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: No, I I think that what you said really resonates with me.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I also, by the way, I have a physiology background as well.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: So I know what you're talking about, you know, when you understand the human body and how it normally functions, everything else, it puts it into perspective, really, you know, what we're dealing with in terms of like what's out there and why it exists.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I've had many discussions with a lot of um, you know, doctors in both dermatology and outside, where I'm just I ask the question of like, well, half the drugs we have on the market, like, do we really need them?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: You know, be and and what are they doing?
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: And so, and from that physiology perspective, I mean, it makes sense to understand the skin in a more holistic way, you know.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: So I think that this topic about men's skin health is is even more important when you look at it from that angle because you know, it's really about understanding that there is a difference, you know, between men and women.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And for a long time, not only aesthetically, but I think um, you know, fundamentally from a science perspective, we've just been ignoring men's skin health, like fun, like fully ignoring it, you know?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And as a woman, if I'm seeing that, I'm sure, you know, it's it's much more apparent for you guys.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I would I would love to learn though, Andrew, like, you know, if you could tell us about some of the skin struggles that you maybe dealt with or some products you tried, you know, before starting Skin Mason, was there like an obvious gap?
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, other than that there weren't options for men's products.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, was there something that you were like personally struggling with that you wanted to address?
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: Absolutely great question.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: You know, I fortunately I I grew up, my my mom um she kept me pretty privy to taking care of my skin.
- 7:25SPEAKER_03: Number one thing was protection.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: My mom would always she she was a very fair and she would always, whenever we go to the beach, she'd always you know, slather me in sunscreen and tell me how dangerous the sun was.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: Um this was opposite to my dad, who never wore any, you know, any skincare, any skincare products, any uh uh sunscreen at all.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Um to opposites, I I definitely leaned towards my dad a little bit more where you know I I didn't really care that much, but I knew I had to protect my skin, but I didn't do anything to keep it moisturized.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: And my mom would just remind me every once in a while, hey Andrew, you want to try this, you want to try that?
- 8:05SPEAKER_03: So as I got older, you know, really there, you know, there's a huge void here.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: And as you said, there's no products that actually like will capture uh a guy's attention because we're trying to hit these few things where it's uh simplicity and efficacy and and and also like what looks nice in the bathroom counter.
- 8:23SPEAKER_03: And and you know, when we were designing these these packages, we were looking at all these elements of like what what can what speaks to men um, but what will women feel proud to also represent on their bathroom counters aside their you know, beautiful looking packages.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: The the women's skincare world is so unapproachable, I feel.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: You know, there's so many products out there.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: You don't know, you get a little confused.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: You get I'm almost like it's it's uh it's a little threatening to me, you know.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: Overload my wife was uh scolding me every time I'd use too much serum, too much of her$200 serum, or too much of her$150 moisturi moisturizer.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: And I was like, there's gotta be a better solution out there.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: So when designing our packaging, we actually we took elements of this is like a night, it's a 1950s cigarette pack, actually, uh called Marin.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: And so we were, you know, we were looking at what what do guys gravitate towards?
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Where back in the day it was like Marlborough Reds and beer, and we were talking a lot about Donald Draper, and we were talking about Mad Men and what the voice is and all this stuff.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: And so you know, obviously having a beautiful package and then keeping it very focused and having the best product be inside of those of those that those packages were was was our was the key, you know, for us.
- 9:50SPEAKER_03: And so I I have to show up to set with good skin.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: I my skin can't I can't have rhosacea, I can't have acne.
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: I can't have the all these pressures, you know, showing up the next day to work.
- 10:02SPEAKER_03: And if I was using a skincare that was that was, you know, uh uh stripping my skin of its nutrients and then not knowing, being on the chase of like not knowing what it was that I used on what day.
- 10:17SPEAKER_03: So having that rhythm to using a product for me that was uh you know my go-to was very, very important.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: And so when Hussein sat me down one night, we we had a you know, we had uh a dinner and he had he had given me this is he had said that you know this was kind of his his his idea.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: He said, look, I wanna uh I want to try to change men's skincare.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: I want I want to you know fix this problem and this void.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: And I was like, look, who's I am down.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: Let's do this and let's come up with the let's come out with the best products on the market.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: No, you know, you brought up such a good point in that, you know, this industry and this it's very cluttered, you know, there's a lot.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, as a woman, Andrew, honestly, like I have stopped shopping for skincare products because I it really I look at them and I'm like, I don't know what's the difference anymore.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I can't tell the difference between a lot of the stuff out there.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And um, I'm not saying that there's not innovation, there is, you know, but it's very confusing for the general consumer and it's very scary because you want, I think everybody, all of us, we want the best for our skin.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: We want to put literally our best face forward, you know, when we go out into the world.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: And unfortunately, the industry and the market, the way it is now, it's not only not approachable, but I feel like it just it's a bunch of lies, you know, at the end of the day.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Like I see products that have like 20% of an acid in there.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, why do you ever need 20% concentration of any acid in a product?
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: You know, that kind of stuff is like, it really scares me for especially the youth, you know what I mean, as they're coming up because it's it's confusing as is, but then you now you're cluttering it with misinformation and you're you're putting all this stuff out there that is going to do harm.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: It's not good.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And I think Hussein, you can maybe relate to this, you know, with your background in medicine.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's like, you know, we are taught do no harm, right?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So when you look at the world and you look at this industry, sometimes it gets a little overwhelming from that perspective.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: It's like, what are we really putting out there?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: Is it really about skin health?
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: I I just like to comment on that.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: I love that you've anchored back to this do no harm.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: I think you started with the point, confusion and clutter, those resonate with me.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: Confusion is as simple as you know, with men.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Look, I see then the name Gina on the screen and I call you Gina instead of Ed guys.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Easily confused.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Uh so you know, we want to uh unravel this confusion uh in the most scientific way, you know, and and and that was it.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: It's like you said, there are products out there, there are good products out there, but it's how, what concentration, what formulation.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: That's where the magic happens, right?
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: And I like you, I'm concerned, exactly what you said for our youth.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: You know, the pads that we've used, um, I've actually used, and we can get into kind of the formulation behind it, but I use it on my son.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: You know, he's got he's uh 14-year-old prepubescent, he's got that little bit of acne on there.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: And uh, we've made this so gentle and in a way that protects your natural, like we really wanted to put that protection, that natural biome exfoliate in the most less abrasive in a you know, way that actually enhances your personal natural defense mechanisms, right?
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: As opposed to you know, ridding, inflaming, and doing harm.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Because, like you said, in fact, a lot of these products out there may even be doing a bit of short-term benefit, but in studying them more, you know this.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: They actually cause long-term harm.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: They reduce the elastin production.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: That inflammation from over retinol use or high acid production can actually cause harm later in life.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: So you're actually doing a total detriment.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, I just I had to comment that it totally resonates with me.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: No, I I completely, you know, I agree with everything you said as well.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And I want to actually ask you about the formulations.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: You know, what when you were looking at the approach for this thing, what what skincare issues um that were unique to men were at the forefront, you know, that you thought we really got to address this stuff, you know.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm gonna maybe take a step back and maybe not speak to the specific issues unique to men.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: As you said and started off with, I have to agree, skin is skin.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: There are a couple of things that are unique to men.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we have a just a bit of a thicker skin layer, we have maybe a bit more um sebum or sort of sweat production and a bit more oily and larger pores.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Um, but does that mean we should be addressing them individually?
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I think the issue that actually we need to address is more the clutter in the market and the confusion in the market.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: And the bigger thing is that for the first time, men are starting to become a little bit more curious about their health, their beauty, their aesthetics in a way that wasn't necessarily or traditionally there.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: You have people like Walker speaking openly, you have people speaking about what, you know, curious men speaking to other men about what do you use for your skin products?
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: This has been germane to women for a long time.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: And you know, I think the market's taking advantage of that.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, and they've told you what to do.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: We're totally confused.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: So now men entering this space, one, don't have an answer, don't have a vehicle, and entering in this confused state.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: So, really, the need I think we have specific to men is telling them that look, you don't need this, it's actually specific to what you do need in the simplest way.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: So we started off with two formulas, two products rather, that aren't actually germate too many, right?
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Particularly men, a scrub and exfoliator and and and a serum.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: And and that was bid on purpose because as Walker said, we wanted to disrupt the market a little bit.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: We wanted people to ask the questions, but we felt these were so important and work so well, and then introduced just our recently, I hope you got our moisturizer, which is absolutely unbelievable in my opinion.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Um it's wonderful.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, and I'd love to speak to that and why why we think our formulations are different.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: But back to your point, I think the specifics are more around you know, this confusion, curiosity, and this, you know, this space that people are finally asking the question.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: So that's what we really wanted to answer.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: We wanted to be that solution, and like you said, and you know, we uh love Walker tells this great story um when we started talking about this.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm gonna be honest, I was nervous, right?
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: When you sit and you go to the bench and you go to formulation and you think you've done something and you want to do something, you have these aspirations.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Really, we wanted to be the best.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: We we we we went back to the drawing board, I don't know how many times.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: It's probably shaking our head.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: I remember the calls and saying, no, this isn't right.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Um, we wanted to add this, we wanted to do this, we want this effect, and then we had something, and and we knew we had something good.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: We we really, really proud of it.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: But we didn't realize honestly how good it was.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: The social proof we are getting now.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: And I love Walker.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Well, even the personal proof, and I want to bring it back to what who's who's I don't think he finished what he was gonna say about his son.
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: It took his son two weeks to for that acne to start going away.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Two days.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Oh wow, two days, two days, two days.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, wow.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm always the exaggerator, but I guess no.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's two days, yeah.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: That's amazing.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Um, so this is why you ask why.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: We have a we have a peptide in our in our uh wipes that is proprietary to us.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: It's called the MP1, Mason peptide one.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and actually eliminates the bacteria that forms acne.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: So it's great for adult acne, great for adolescents.
- 18:11SPEAKER_03: It actually, you know, it was something that came after who's was using it with uh with his son.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: Um Ishan and him.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: I I I just love the visual of dad and son in the mirror together, 14-year-old and you know, a uh pushing 40-year-old.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Um, over, over.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, over the cliff.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: Um, and I just love that visual of father-son doing a skincare routine together in the mirror.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: And this has opened up a whole new world for us and and in in try in potentially exploring adolescent products and and really marrying the two.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: And and you know, it used to be little girls doing it with their moms, but now it's sons and fathers and you know, the whole family can get behind doing this together because look, ultimately, you don't want to have it just be about superficiality and you don't want to have to just like you know, go, oh, I I I I want to do a skincare routine because I I want my skin to look beautiful.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: Really, beauty is on the inside out, right?
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Beauty is it, there's a lot of things that are linked.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: It's like, you know, I say to my wife and I talk a lot, we've we started a juice company uh 12 years uh years ago, we sold it a few years ago.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: And we would partner with cosmetic brands and beauty brands, and a lot of which we didn't part, we we wouldn't partner because we just didn't like the ingredients.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: We would always deep dive into the ingredients because that's what we did with our bottles of juice, yeah.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: Cold pressed juice.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: We we did a lot of things that you wouldn't normally see, which is like E3 Live and juicing with cilantro for the heavy metal detox and whatnot.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: But beauty really is from the inside out, and uh, you need to take care of your body from the inside first.
- 19:55SPEAKER_03: But feeling uh feeling like your skin is uh hydrated and feeling protected and feeling like it's clear and clean, you will go about your day differently.
- 20:07SPEAKER_03: You're gonna maybe go into that interview, that job interview, or you'll you're gonna go into, you know, um, you know, that first date or that, you know, the blind date, or the, you know, whatever it is.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: You're gonna go, you're gonna go about it differently.
- 20:21SPEAKER_03: You're gonna feel that much more confident.
- 20:23SPEAKER_03: And so it's, you know, why not start at a young age and and uh and and now we get to do it all together as a family, you know, and that's what we want to do here with with with Skin Mason.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's that's a that's a really wonderful thing that you pointed out.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And I'm so glad that you took the time to really highlight this because I'm a firm believer in everything you said.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: I really believe that beauty is an experience.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: I think that when you create healthy habits from the beginning, that's what makes people in the long run feel beautiful, feel good about themselves, you know, and like you know, exactly what you said.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: I am a huge believer in that.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: And when it comes to this whole adolescent category, right?
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: It's like there's been a lot of buzz, I feel like in the industry about, you know, what's safe for younger uh for the kids and what's not.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: And it's at the end of the day, if you think about it, it's the fundamentals of what your skin needs.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: And that's what I see in your products, you know.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: And I think that's really why it's probably resonating so well.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Skin Mason is resonating with both women and men, because you're using the core of what your skin needs to be healthy.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: It's not about like, like, I think that, you know, a lot of brands, from what I've seen at least, they sway away and they go into these directions that are just, I mean, I'm all about science and exploring and you know what I mean.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, like you have to have an anchor, and that anchor has to be your skin barrier when you're talking about you know, skin health.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: And some of the ingredients that I see come up.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: I'm just like, why do we need that?
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: We don't need that.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: There's not enough.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Papers out there, the literature even supporting, you know, that your skin even interacts with this compound.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: If anything, it'll cause irritation.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I really look at those kind of products and I see them as, you know, like, why are we confusing the public?
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So when I look at your what you guys have created and skin mason, you know, fundamentally across the board with the products, I'm seeing a lot of just really just, you know, they're very nourishing, they're very supportive ingredients.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: And that's why I was asking you earlier, Hosane, about the formulations, because I think um that really probably also speaks to why, you know, you saw that uh very short time frame with clearing up the acne, you know, for your son.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: So because it's you're giving the skin what it needs.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: So it's very interesting.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: This again, I'm gonna repeat myself, so resonates uh with how we feel with our ethos at Skin Mason, but it's really about that skin, that homeostasis giving what it needs.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Like I'm gonna take it a step further and sort of almost raise you in that, you know, it's not the skin.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: We just look at it as an organ, right?
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: We know it's the largest organ in the body.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: And if we approach skin like an organ, if we approach skin like I do in the intensive care unit with abating injury, inflammation, oxidative stress, you are going to have that outcome of beautiful skin.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be the best version of you.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: We don't want necessarily beauty on the out, we want to make and enable the best version of you, the best version of your skin, it through a healthy version of your skin.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: You know why, you know, when we looked at, for example, those pads that we're just referencing, the mason peptide one in combined, we've done clinical trials with our additional salicylic acid.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: As you know, this sort of clears up, keeps the pores open.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: In addition, it works synergistically to reduce the P acne formation down by 50%.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: That's amazing.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: In addition to that, then we go, okay, but what's the harm?
- 23:57SPEAKER_01: So we have to take a step back.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Okay, how is that going to cause inflammation?
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: So we use things like the mirabolis, uh, gelapola and lilac extracts to anti-inflammatory.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: This isn't hugely scientific, but we use these anti-inflammatory historic medicinal properties in our sort of elements to restore that anti-inflammatory component and the cogic acid to have the lightning sort of effects, but in sort of small docile amounts.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: When we in our in our moisturizer, you know, retinol, we've paired it with linoleate, right?
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: To have that sort of very anti-inflammatory, soothing, lipid-based, rich layer for slow, gentle release.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: So, like you said, going back to your comment, do no harm.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: We're always that's got to be that's forefront in our thought process, and it's how we do it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: When we manufacture our products, vitamin C, there's lots of stuff up with vitamin C.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: So we use allascorbic acid, high potency at 15%, but it works at a pH base of you know, roughly three.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: We make sure we're pH mediated, moderated, so that we have the highest effect with the most gentle formulation possible.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: So that at the end of the day, you're enhancing, you're allowing your own skin to do what it's supposed to do.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: We can't do that, right?
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Like the body is amazing at at repair, restore, regenerate.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: We're enabling, we're enhancers, right?
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: We're we're enhancing the process.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: That's what we're doing.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: It makes sense.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I love that you you brought these points up because it's very rare to actually hear about this in the the skincare space is this idea of like true dosing, you know, the true um fundamental idea of dosing.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: I think it's something that we've kind of lost track of over time, you know, and I'm I'm glad to see that you guys kept this in mind because retinoids, I mean, I really would love to speak to you about retinoids a little bit because and get your opinion, Hussein, on this, because I I think retinoids is a topic that we all have very differing opinions about.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: And my opinion is exactly the approach you guys are taking, which is it has to be time released, it has to be gentle enough for your skin to actually adapt and then utilize, you know.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: And I uh oftentimes I see people who have these like really strong like prescription strength retinal treatments, and they complain about, well, my skin is purging, my skin's breaking out more.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And my go-to, you know, my instinct, my gut instinct is telling me, well, it's probably because it's too much for your skin, you know.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: So was when you were when you were thinking about this component, you know, adding in that that time release factor and and really kind of you know dosing things correctly, what were some of the I mean, were there any hurdles in that, you know, in terms of like picking what you needed to use versus the other options?
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Maybe walk us through that journey of like crafting this.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: I couldn't agree more with everything you said.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: When we look at sort of retinals or retinoids in this market, I agree that, you know, we think that something is good, more is not better.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: And people sometimes are in this space, particularly, you know, these fillers, anything else, you know, do a little bit, you should do a little bit more.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: And we find that, you know, things actually have a harmful effect.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Like you said, there's a dose response and there's a harm effect to all these.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: And I think dose is incredibly important.
- 27:23SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad you brought it up and sort of manufactured it in that way.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: And I think it's important to consider that with the with the over and excess use of retinols, we know that retinoids can cause that increased inflammation.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: It can do exactly what you're saying.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: And we know that the long-term effects of that are going to be actually harmed, reduction in elastin production, reduction in actually overall skin health look and appeal.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: So that was absolutely forefront in our mind as we added this, using both, you know, sort of all three ceramides in in concert to build, restore, and protect that outer stratum corneum, really looking at that lipid bilayer that we could actually increase and enhance by adding our products to this.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: The hyalonic acid, using all three sort of Dalton weights of that to make sure that we have both outside but penetration within, so that when we get that fluid in, we've coupled it just hopefully perfectly.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: It's not, we'll get there.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: But with our sort of lipid-based formulas, those free fatty acids that we allow to restore and enhance that moisture and protection, keeping that hydration in.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: We wanted to set the bar.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: We looked at what was good and we wanted to make it better.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: There is good out there.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: What we did is we added glutathione.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: People may challenge us on this, but in the ICU, I use N-acetylcysteine all the time as a precursor to glutathione as a cell regenerative therapy.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: We know it works as a potent antioxidant in the skin, but this is the beauty, this word of synergy when we actually work with glutathione together with the vitamin C, together with the phylic acid, in a way that is coupled so that we have the effect we have.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: And so this word of synergies, I think, is really strong for us.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: It's not what you use, it's how you use it together in the way you said it perfectly, which is dosing.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: And to be specific, our ions in the serum.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: Um, but you know, we're not we didn't reinvent the wheel here, right?
- 29:25SPEAKER_03: We we were like, you know, like who's just saying, we we looked at what works and we just wanted to make it better.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: So we in you know, Hussein Dr.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: Kanji has a has an internal medicine approach to it.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: And my approach to it has always been supplements and food, you know, let food be thy medicine.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: I was already taking glutathione for two years internally, and I was taking it, you know, I'd go get IVs and I would, you know, we we have a friend of ours who has a uh world-class uh health and wellness technology center in Los Angeles called Next Health, and they do uh IV therapy, crowd therapy, and then now they're doing um stem cells, and they're I mean they're doing they're they're they've they're doing it all.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: And I've been do I've been dosing myself with glutathione for an NAD for a couple of years now, and I've been feeling incredible effects.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: You know, who knows?
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's placebo.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: So Hussein takes this uh data driven you know chemist approach.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: And I'm I I've because we had this juice company and we were introduced to adaptogens at an early stage, and we were we were doing a lot of cutting edge stuff five to ten years ago before any of this really came to you know came on the market.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: So um yeah, it's really just looking at what it's out there and we use our there's a reason why Skin Mason doesn't have 10 products right now after we uh launched it for six months and we started you know talking about this two and a half years ago.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: It's because we're coming out with one product at a time.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: We use it ourselves for months on end, plus all of our friends, and we see how it feels.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: And um, and you're gonna say that's that's how we're going to continue to build our company.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: You know, we're going to do it very methodically, come out with the best products that give you the best results.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I I just want to say, Andrew, I really love that you guys don't have 10 products.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Like, can I just say I love that you're going about it methodically because that's exactly what we need in this industry.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I could not preach about that enough.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: I could not say that enough times.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: I really at this point as a consumer, I cringe when I see a brand has 50 products.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: It's not necessary.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: If you really craft something beautifully and really put science forward, which I mean, you know, we discussed here.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're not gonna come out with 50 products.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: There's just no reason for them because a great formulation is gonna take care of about eight or nine of those products immediately.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: You know, you mentioned glutathione.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad you brought that up.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Glutathione is, I think, one of the most under uh discussed, like we are not even talking about the benefits of, you know, mopping up free radicals from the inside out, you know, in our industry.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: We're not discussing it.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: We we throw around these terms now, but we're not really addressing like what are the fundamental physiological processes and that the body utilizes every single day to prevent us from free radical damage.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: We don't even discuss it.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: And I don't know why, because like you said, the skin is the largest organ.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: So, you know, when I hear you say that very nonchalantly, that you know, you guys put it in there, I'm just like, I'm very excited, you know, as a consumer that you thought about this and and you were so forward-thinking with it.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think that Skin Mason is definitely, you know, it's a brand that's I think more innovative than some of some of the things you see that are super hyped up because it's the hype isn't gonna get you results.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: What gets you results is good ingredients used in the right way in the right doses, and you know, a routine that's crafted for everyday use.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: That's the I think personally, the you know, the magic recipe.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: And I really see that in your brand.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: It's beautiful.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: And by the way, I love the moisturizer, guys.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Like it's really good.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Like I really I use it a few times only so far.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: I won't lie, I've only used it a few times, but every single time I've used it on clean fully cleansed skin, my skin is glowing, it looks beautiful.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: For me as a woman, it's important for me to have like a nice base for my makeup, so it's works beautifully in that way.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's a great product, you know, and it really speaks for itself like all of the products do.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: So I'm a huge fan of your approach.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: I think it's wonderful.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: You know, it's great to hear what you said about taking it slow.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna I'm gonna correct you on one thing.
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: It's that we're not talking about it.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: We are talking about it.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: We are talking about the science behind it.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: It's because you you're bringing it to the forefront.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: And I really honestly, um, in our approach, I want to thank you for bringing this holistic, scientific, thoughtful approach to the mainstream and making and forcing the conversations because I think that's exactly our approach, and that's what needs to be done.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: And to your other point, we will say two things.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: One, we're gonna stay try and true to our system.
- 34:19SPEAKER_01: It is only always gonna be three steps.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: And with those three steps, we will challenge any other eight, nine, 10, 14 step that you have on your counter space because for the reasons you said, I think we can deliver more with less.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: And anything we bring to the market now are what we're gonna coin as enhancements.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: So you can have enhancements to your routine, but this is gonna be our complete system.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's it's a great system, though.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: I I really believe in it's simple, but it's very effective.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: You know, that's the bottom line, I think.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: And I think for anyone listening out there, I mean, I I really always urge our audience.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, we have a lot of people that chime in for recommendations.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, for me personally speaking, I mean, I I speak from the consumer standpoint, and that is that simplify, simplify, simplify.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: If you can get one product to do the job of five, you're you found the right product, you know.
- 35:12SPEAKER_00: And so I really recommend anybody, you know, who's really looking to declutter their space, you gotta check out the brand.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Um, I do want to ask though, especially, you know, uh Andrew, from your perspective, you know, there's a lot of I think confusion, especially for men.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know the brand was initially designed for men, and I'd love to get your your thoughts and your advice on this in terms of how to approach the skincare space.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: Skin care is is very similar to going to the mechanic to get your car fixed, right?
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Like the mechanic could tell me anything.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: I could go into my to to get my engine serviced, and they could just throw a thousand things at me and say, oh yeah, we have to we have to change this and do that and the alternator and the b-da-da-da-th-s, this, and and I'll just do it because I I want to leave and have my car run smoothly and not have to think about it, and I'll just pay for it.
- 36:04SPEAKER_03: So it's like, how do you siff, you know, sift through the noise and find somebody?
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: And you said you said before the hype.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Well, money is connected to the hype.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: The companies that have the most money are absolutely you're going to be uh targeted and you will be, you know, uh sold these products because they have money to do that.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: So here we are, the little little engine that could, and we're trying to bring a uh uh an eff as an effective product as possible with a simple system to people and have them adopt it.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: And we're we're we're doing it, we're doing it, you know, customer, one customer at a time.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: And what I think our wins are is that our customer retention rate is unbelievable.
- 36:57SPEAKER_03: We have repeat customers constantly.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: And that's the core.
- 37:01SPEAKER_03: That's our that those are the that's the community that we've built in Skin Mason.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: And that that for us is everything.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: It's one of these things that kit, you know, for example, we tell our kids, how do you, you know, you don't want our our kids don't want to be at a I don't want our kids to be at a birthday party and then say, hey, oh, you know what, Skittles are bad for you or MMs are bad for you.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: You shouldn't eat that.
- 37:22SPEAKER_03: My mom and dad say they're bad for you.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: What how we educate our kids is we say, hey guys, uh turn the turn the packaging around.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Read the ingredients.
- 37:31SPEAKER_03: Just read the ingredients.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: You already know, you know, you already know what's good for you and what's not.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: If you see red dyes, or if you see, and look, we're we're I'm in Canada right now.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: We do live in Los Angeles, and so the American food system is broken.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: We all know that.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: Um so we just want our kids to be educated, to be able to turn products or turn turn packaging around, read the package, understand what they're reading.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: And it's very difficult in skincare to do that because look what we're taught.
- 38:01SPEAKER_03: We're throwing around words like alstorbic acid and we're and and you know, uh uh glutathione and um you know phospholipids and you know, it's like these are big terms for the everyday person.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: And I'm the everyday person, I'm just an actor who just wants to simplify my skincare regimen.
- 38:21SPEAKER_03: And I've partnered with uh an incredibly talented heart and lung surgeon who went to MIT, you know, and was uh uh a lab guy.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: So and and here you are, I'm on a I'm on this podcast with another doctor.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: And so this is and I've only learned this because uh because I've been around it now and I I'm I'm interested, and it's become a huge part of my life now.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: And and so you know, I think that it it's how do we have people, how do we educate consumers now and say, guys, just uh turn over the packaging, and if you see this ingredient, this ingredient, and this ingredient, put it back on the shelf, don't buy it.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: And you know, skin mason can be trusted, and that's what we want, and that's what we hope for.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: And we want to continue to innovate and deliver a product that people resonate with and that makes you feel your ultimate best.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: I I really appreciate you saying that.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: And I I love I really appreciate you both of you building this brand out to be genuinely a safe brand for people.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: I think that that is it really speaks volumes, you know.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: I think that there's a lot of mistrust right now amongst consumers.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: And I think when you see a brand that's just doing things right, it it's just very refreshing and it's something to really stand behind.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: And I really commend you for doing this well and and putting real science out there in a very digestible, very relatable way.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: You know, I can't thank you enough from a consumer standpoint for that.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: That's so needed, you know.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: So, Dr.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Kanji, really hats off to you for that, uh, you know, spearheading that medical side of things because we need that more, I think, you know, in this industry.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: It's very important.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: It's truly a team effort.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: And as we say, you know, in medicine these days, it's patient-centric and it's people-centric, and that's what we want.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: We want people to smile at the end of the day.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: That's what we're all about.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Now, I do want to ask, what does the future hold for skin mason?
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Are there any new um, you know, innovations on the horizon or um anything you can share with us?
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's talking about for us, it's about always not being as satisfied with the status quo.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: So we're really happy with what we have, but we want to be challenged.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: We're gonna continue to grow our brand in terms of the enhancements that we're gonna be putting forward.
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: And those are gonna be pieces that are just gonna make it that much better.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: We're gonna continue to look on.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: I can't give out too much information right now, but we've got a few things in the pipeline looking at innovations like those, you know, oxidative stresses and free radical sequestration elements that we gently and carefully put into the mix.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: But what we want to do most of all is introduce more of something you can do together.
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: You know, going back to your point in terms of, you know, we want to beautify, we want to spend time, we want to be healthy together.
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: This is something you can do with your partner, your child, and and for yourself.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: And that's really what we want to anchor on.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna be bringing a bit more to that.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: I don't know, Walker, you got anything?
- 41:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know it's a great question.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: It's it's a question that we ask ourselves constantly.

- 41:55SPEAKER_03: And again, like I said, we pride ourselves in customer retention.
- 41:59SPEAKER_03: And um, you know, we're gonna can continue to innovate, introduce simple, you know, simple products, effective products, and ultimately become a household name in skincare.
