- 0:00Speaker 1: Part one, the second stage. Then did Christian address himself
- 0:05Speaker 1: to go back and evangelist. After he had kissed him,
- 0:09Speaker 1: gave him one smile and bid him God's speed. So
- 0:12Speaker 1: he went on with haste. Neither spake he to any
- 0:15Speaker 1: man by the way, nor if any asked him, would
- 0:18Speaker 1: he vouchsafe them an answer. He went like one that
- 0:22Speaker 1: was all the wild, treading on forbidden ground, and could
- 0:25Speaker 1: by no means think himself safe till again he was
- 0:28Speaker 1: got into the way which he had left to follow
- 0:30Speaker 1: mister worldly Wiseman's counsel. So in the process of time
- 0:35Speaker 1: Christian got up to the gate. Now over the gate
- 0:39Speaker 1: there was written, knock, and it shall be opened unto
- 0:42Speaker 1: you Matthew seven seven. He knocked therefore more than once
- 0:47Speaker 1: or twice, saying, may I now enter here? Will he
- 0:51Speaker 1: within open to sorry me? Though I have been an
- 0:53Speaker 1: undeserving rebel, then shall I not fail to sing his
- 0:57Speaker 1: lasting praise on high? At last there came a grave
- 1:01Speaker 1: person to the gate named good Will, who asked who
- 1:04Speaker 1: was there, and whence he came, and what he would
- 1:07Speaker 1: have Christian, here is a poor bird and sinner. I
- 1:12Speaker 1: come from the city of destruction, but I am going
- 1:15Speaker 1: to Mount Zion, that I may be delivered from the
- 1:18Speaker 1: wrath to come. I would, therefore, sir, since I am
- 1:21Speaker 1: informed that by this gate is the way to thither,
- 1:25Speaker 1: know if you are willing to let me in good will.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I am willing with all my heart, said he, And
- 1:32Speaker 1: with that he opened the gate. So, when Christian was
- 1:35Speaker 1: stepping in, the other gave him a pull. Then said Christian?
- 1:39Speaker 1: What means that the other told him? A little distance
- 1:44Speaker 1: from this gate there is erected a strong castle, of
- 1:47Speaker 1: which Beelzebub is the captain. From thence, both he and
- 1:51Speaker 1: they that are with him shoot arrows at those that
- 1:54Speaker 1: come up to this gate, if haply they may die
- 1:56Speaker 1: before they can enter in. Then said Christian, I rejoice
- 2:01Speaker 1: and tremble. So when he was got in, the man
- 2:04Speaker 1: of the gate asked him who directed him thither. Christian
- 2:08Speaker 1: Evangelist bid me come hither and knock as I did,
- 2:11Speaker 1: And he said that, you, sir, would tell me what
- 2:14Speaker 1: I must do. Good Will an open door set before
- 2:18Speaker 1: thee and no man can shut it. Christian, Now I
- 2:24Speaker 1: begin to reap the benefits of my hazards good will.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But how is it that you came alone? Christian? Because
- 2:33Speaker 1: none of my neighbors saw their danger as I saw mine,
- 2:37Speaker 1: good Will, Did any of them know of your coming? Christian? Yes,
- 2:44Speaker 1: my wife and children saw me at the first and
- 2:47Speaker 1: called after me to turn again. Also some of my
- 2:50Speaker 1: neighbors stood crying and calling after me to return. But
- 2:54Speaker 1: I put my fingers in my ears, and so came
- 2:56Speaker 1: on my way, good Will. But did none of them
- 3:00Speaker 1: follow you to persuade you to go back? Christian? Yes,
- 3:07Speaker 1: both Obstinate and Pliable. But when they saw that they
- 3:10Speaker 1: could not prevail, Obstinate went railing back, But Pliable came
- 3:14Speaker 1: with me a little way. Good Will, But why did
- 3:18Speaker 1: he not come through? Christian? We indeed came both together
- 3:23Speaker 1: until we came to the slow of despond, into the
- 3:26Speaker 1: which we also suddenly fell. And then was my neighbor
- 3:29Speaker 1: Pliable discouraged and would not venture father. Wherefore, getting out
- 3:34Speaker 1: again on the side next to his own house, he
- 3:36Speaker 1: told me I should possess the brave country alone for him.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So he went his way, and I came mine here
- 3:42Speaker 1: after Obstinate and I to this gate. Good Will, then
- 3:48Speaker 1: said good Will, alas poor man is the celestial glory
- 3:53Speaker 1: of so little esteem with him that he counted it
- 3:55Speaker 1: not worth running the hazard of a few difficulties to
- 3:58Speaker 1: obtain it. Christian truly said Christian, I have said the
- 4:03Speaker 1: truth appliable, and if I should also say all the
- 4:06Speaker 1: truth of myself, it will appear there is no betterment
- 4:10Speaker 1: betwixt him and myself. It is true he went back
- 4:13Speaker 1: to his own house. But I also turned aside to
- 4:16Speaker 1: go in the way of death, being persuaded thereto by
- 4:19Speaker 1: the carnal arguments of one mister worldly wiseman good Will.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Oh did he light upon you what he would have
- 4:27Speaker 1: had you have seek for ease at the hands of
- 4:29Speaker 1: mister Legality. They are both of them a very cheat.
- 4:33Speaker 1: But did you take his counsel, Christian? Yes, as far
- 4:38Speaker 1: as I durst, I went to find out mister Legality,
- 4:42Speaker 1: until I thought that the mountain that stands by his
- 4:44Speaker 1: house would have fallen upon my head. Wherefore there I
- 4:47Speaker 1: was forced to stop, good Will. That mountain has been
- 4:52Speaker 1: the death of many and will be the death of
- 4:54Speaker 1: many more. It is well you escaped, being by it
- 4:57Speaker 1: dashed in pieces. Christ Why, truly I do not know
- 5:02Speaker 1: what had become of me there had not evangelists happily
- 5:06Speaker 1: met me again as I was musing in the midst
- 5:08Speaker 1: of my dumps. But it was God's mercy that he
- 5:11Speaker 1: came to me again, for else I had never come hither.
- 5:14Speaker 1: But now I am come such a one as I
- 5:17Speaker 1: am more fit indeed for death by that mountain than
- 5:20Speaker 1: thus to stand talking with my Lord. But oh, what
- 5:23Speaker 1: a favor is this to me, that yet I have
- 5:26Speaker 1: admitted entrance here. Good Will, We make no objections against
- 5:31Speaker 1: any notwithstanding all that they have done before they come hither.
- 5:35Speaker 1: They in no wise are cast out John six thirty seven.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And therefore, good Christian, come a little way with me,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and I will teach THEE about the way thou must go.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Look before THEE, dost thou see this narrow way, that
- 5:51Speaker 1: is the way thou must go. It was cast up
- 5:54Speaker 1: by the patriarchs, prophets, Christ and his apostles, and it
- 5:58Speaker 1: is as straight as a rule can make it. This
- 6:01Speaker 1: is the way thou must go, Christian. But said Christian,
- 6:06Speaker 1: are there no turnings nor windings by which a stranger
- 6:09Speaker 1: may lose his way? Good Will? Yes, there are many ways,
- 6:14Speaker 1: but down upon this, and they are crooked and wide.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But thus thou mayest distinguish the right from the wrong,
- 6:21Speaker 1: the right only being straight and narrow Matthew seven fourteen.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Then I saw in my dream that Christian asked him
- 6:30Speaker 1: further if he could not help him off with his
- 6:33Speaker 1: burden that was upon his back, for as yet he
- 6:35Speaker 1: had not got rid thereof, nor could he by any
- 6:38Speaker 1: means get it off without help. He told him, as
- 6:43Speaker 1: to thy burden, be content to bear it until thou
- 6:47Speaker 1: comest to the place of deliverance, for there it would
- 6:50Speaker 1: fall from thy back of itself. Then Christian began to
- 6:54Speaker 1: gird up his loins and to address himself to his journey.
- 6:58Speaker 1: So the other told him that by by that he
- 7:00Speaker 1: was gone some distance from the gate, he would come
- 7:03Speaker 1: to the house of the Interpreter, at whose door he
- 7:05Speaker 1: should knock, and he would show him excellent things. Then
- 7:10Speaker 1: Christian took his leave of his friend, and he again
- 7:12Speaker 1: bid him God's speed. Then he went on till he
- 7:16Speaker 1: came at the house of the Interpreter, where he knocked
- 7:19Speaker 1: over and over. At last one came to the door
- 7:22Speaker 1: and asked who was there, Christian, Sir, here is a
- 7:27Speaker 1: traveler who is bid by an acquaintance of the good
- 7:30Speaker 1: man of this house to call here for my prophet.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I would therefore speak with the master of the house.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So he called for the mass of the house, who,
- 7:38Speaker 1: after a little time came to Christian and asked him
- 7:41Speaker 1: what he would have Christian, Sir, said Christian, I am
- 7:47Speaker 1: a man that am come from the city of Destruction
- 7:50Speaker 1: and am going to the Mount Zion. And I was
- 7:52Speaker 1: told by the man that stands at the gate at
- 7:54Speaker 1: the head of this way, that if I called here,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you would show me excellent things such as would be
- 8:00Speaker 1: helpful to me on my journey. Interpreter then said, Interpreter,
- 8:06Speaker 1: come in, I will show thee that which will be
- 8:09Speaker 1: profitable to thee. So he commanded his man to light
- 8:12Speaker 1: the candle and bid Christian follow him. So he had
- 8:16Speaker 1: him into a private room and bid his man open
- 8:19Speaker 1: a door the witch. When he had done, Christian saw
- 8:22Speaker 1: the picture very grave person hang up against the wall,
- 8:26Speaker 1: and this was the fashion of it. It had eyes
- 8:29Speaker 1: lifted up to heaven, the best of books in its hand,
- 8:32Speaker 1: the law of truth was written upon its lips. The
- 8:35Speaker 1: world was behind its back. It stood as if it
- 8:38Speaker 1: pleaded with men, and a crown of gold did hang
- 8:41Speaker 1: over its head. Christian then said, Christian, what means this interpreter.
- 8:50Speaker 1: The man whose picture this is is one of a thousand.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He can beget children one Corinthians four fifteen, travail in
- 8:59Speaker 1: birth with children Galatians four nineteen, and nurse them himself
- 9:04Speaker 1: when they are born. And wheres thou seest him, with
- 9:07Speaker 1: his eyes lift up to heaven, the best of books
- 9:10Speaker 1: in his hand, and the law of truth writ on
- 9:12Speaker 1: his lips. It is to show THEE that his work
- 9:16Speaker 1: is to know and unfold dark things to sinners, even
- 9:20Speaker 1: as also thou seest him stand as if he pleaded
- 9:22Speaker 1: with men, and where as thou seest the world as
- 9:25Speaker 1: cast behind him, and that a crowd hangs over his head.
- 9:29Speaker 1: That is to show THEE that slighting and despising the
- 9:32Speaker 1: things that are present, for the love that he hath
- 9:34Speaker 1: to his master's service. He is sure in the world
- 9:38Speaker 1: that comes next to have glory for his reward. Now
- 9:42Speaker 1: said the interpreter, I have showed THEE this picture first,
- 9:46Speaker 1: because the man whose picture this is is the only
- 9:49Speaker 1: man whom the Lord of the place whither thou art
- 9:51Speaker 1: going hath authorized to be thy guide in all difficult
- 9:55Speaker 1: places thou mayest meet with in the way. Wherefore, take
- 9:59Speaker 1: good to what I have showed thee, and bear well
- 10:02Speaker 1: in thy mind what thou hast seen. Lest in thy
- 10:05Speaker 1: journey thou meet with some that pretend to lead thee right,
- 10:08Speaker 1: but their way goes down to death. Then he took
- 10:12Speaker 1: him by the hand and led him into a very
- 10:14Speaker 1: large parlor that was full of dust because never swept
- 10:19Speaker 1: the witch. After he had reviewed it a little while,
- 10:22Speaker 1: the interpreter called for a man to sweep. Now, when
- 10:25Speaker 1: he began to sweep, the dust began so abundantly to
- 10:28Speaker 1: fly about that Christian had almost therewith been choked. Then
- 10:33Speaker 1: said the interpreter to a damsel that stood by, bring
- 10:37Speaker 1: hither water and sprinkle the room the witch. When she
- 10:40Speaker 1: had done it was swept and cleansed with pleasure. Christian
- 10:45Speaker 1: then said Christian, what means this interpreter? The interpreter answered,
- 10:52Speaker 1: this parlor is the heart of a man that was
- 10:54Speaker 1: never sanctified by the sweet grace of the Gospel. The
- 10:58Speaker 1: dust is his original sea and inward corruptions that have
- 11:02Speaker 1: defiled the whole man. He that began to sweep at
- 11:05Speaker 1: first is the law. But she that brought water and
- 11:09Speaker 1: did sprinkle it is the Gospel. Now, where's thou soarest,
- 11:13Speaker 1: that so soon as the first began to sweep the
- 11:16Speaker 1: dust did so fly about, that the room by him
- 11:19Speaker 1: could not be cleansed, but that thou wast almost choked therewith.
- 11:24Speaker 1: This is to show THEE that the law, instead of
- 11:27Speaker 1: cleansing the heart, by its working from sin, doth revive
- 11:32Speaker 1: Romans seventy nine, put strength into first Corinthians fifteen fifty six,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and increase it in the soul Romans five twenty. Even
- 11:44Speaker 1: as it doth discover and forbid it, for it doth
- 11:47Speaker 1: not give power to subdue again, as thou sawest the
- 11:51Speaker 1: damsel sprinkle the room with water, upon which it was
- 11:55Speaker 1: cleansed with pleasure. This is to show THEE that when
- 11:58Speaker 1: the gospel comes in the wheat and precious influences thereafter
- 12:02Speaker 1: the heart. Then I say, even as thou sawest the
- 12:05Speaker 1: damsel laid the dust by sprinkling the floor with water,
- 12:09Speaker 1: so is sin vanquished and subdued, and the soul made
- 12:13Speaker 1: clean through the faith of it, and consequently fit for
- 12:16Speaker 1: the King of Glory to inhabit. John fifteen three, Ephesians
- 12:22Speaker 1: five twenty six, Acts fifteen nine, Romans sixteen twenty five,
- 12:27Speaker 1: and twenty six. I saw moreover in my dream that
- 12:31Speaker 1: the interpreter took him by the hand and led him
- 12:34Speaker 1: into a little room where sat two little children, each
- 12:38Speaker 1: one in his chair. The name of the eldest was Passion,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and the name of the other Patience. Passion seemed to
- 12:45Speaker 1: be much discontent, but Patience was very quiet. Then Christian asked,
- 12:51Speaker 1: what is the reason of the discontent of Passion. The
- 12:55Speaker 1: interpreter answered, the governor of them would have him stay
- 12:59Speaker 1: for his best things till the beginning of the next year.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But he will have all now, But Patience is willing
- 13:05Speaker 1: to wait. Then I saw that one came to Passion
- 13:09Speaker 1: and brought him a bag of treasure, and poured it
- 13:12Speaker 1: down at his feet, the which he took up and
- 13:14Speaker 1: rejoiced therein, and with all laughed Patience to scorn. But
- 13:19Speaker 1: I beheld but awhile, and he had lavished all away,
- 13:23Speaker 1: and had nothing left him but rags. Christian then said
- 13:28Speaker 1: Christian to the interpreter, expound this matter more fully to me. Interpreter,
- 13:34Speaker 1: so he said, these two lads are figures Passion of
- 13:38Speaker 1: the men of this world and Patience of the men
- 13:41Speaker 1: of that which is to come. For as here thou
- 13:44Speaker 1: seest Passion will have all now this year, that is
- 13:48Speaker 1: to say, in this world, so are the men of
- 13:51Speaker 1: this world. They must have all their good things now.
- 13:55Speaker 1: They cannot stay till the next year, that is, until
- 13:58Speaker 1: the next world, for their poor of good. That proverb
- 14:02Speaker 1: a bird in the hand is worth two in the
- 14:04Speaker 1: bush is of more authority with them than are all
- 14:08Speaker 1: the divine testimonies of the good of the world to come.
- 14:11Speaker 1: But as thou sawest that he had quickly lavished all
- 14:14Speaker 1: the way, and had presently left him nothing but rags,
- 14:18Speaker 1: so will it be with all such men at the
- 14:20Speaker 1: end of this world. Christian then said Christian. Now I
- 14:27Speaker 1: see that Patience has the best wisdom, and that upon
- 14:30Speaker 1: many accounts, one because he stays for the best things
- 14:35Speaker 1: two and also because he will have the glory of
- 14:38Speaker 1: his when the other has nothing but rags. Interpreter, Nay,
- 14:44Speaker 1: you may add another to wit. The glory of the
- 14:47Speaker 1: next world will never wear out. But these are suddenly gone. Therefore,
- 14:51Speaker 1: Passion had not so much reason to laugh at Patience
- 14:54Speaker 1: because he had his good things first, as Patience will
- 14:58Speaker 1: have to laugh at Passion because he had his best
- 15:01Speaker 1: things last. For first must give place to last, because
- 15:05Speaker 1: last must have his time to come. But last gives
- 15:09Speaker 1: place to nothing, for there is not another to succeed He. Therefore,
- 15:14Speaker 1: that hath his portion first must needs have a time
- 15:18Speaker 1: to spend it. But he that hath his portion last
- 15:21Speaker 1: must have it lastingly. Therefore it is said of dives
- 15:25Speaker 1: in thy lifetime, thou receivest thy good things, and likewise
- 15:31Speaker 1: Lazarus evil things. But now he is comforted, and thou
- 15:36Speaker 1: art tormented Luke sixteen twenty five. Christian, then I perceive
- 15:43Speaker 1: it is not best to covet things that are now,
- 15:46Speaker 1: but to wait for things to come. Interpreter, you say truth,
- 15:51Speaker 1: for the things that are seen are temporal, but the
- 15:53Speaker 1: things that are not seen are eternal second Corinthians four eighteen.
- 15:59Speaker 1: But though this be so, yet, since things present and
- 16:02Speaker 1: our fleshly appetite are such near neighbors one to another,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and again because things to come and carnal sense are
- 16:10Speaker 1: such strangers to one another. Therefore it is that the
- 16:14Speaker 1: first of these so suddenly fall into amity, and that
- 16:17Speaker 1: distance is so continued between the second. Then I saw
- 16:21Speaker 1: in my dream that the interpreter took Christian by the
- 16:24Speaker 1: hand and led him into a place where was a
- 16:27Speaker 1: fire burning against the wall, and one standing by it,
- 16:31Speaker 1: always casting much water upon it to quench it. Yet
- 16:34Speaker 1: did the fire burn higher and hotter? Then said Christian?
- 16:39Speaker 1: What means this? The interpreter answered, This fire is the
- 16:45Speaker 1: work of brace that is wrought in the heart. He
- 16:47Speaker 1: that casts water upon it to extinguish and put it
- 16:50Speaker 1: out is the devil. But in that thou seest the fire,
- 16:54Speaker 1: notwithstanding very higher and hotter, thou shalt also see the
- 16:59Speaker 1: reason of that. So he had him about to the
- 17:02Speaker 1: back side of the wall, where he saw a man
- 17:04Speaker 1: with a vessel of oil in his hand, of the
- 17:07Speaker 1: which he did also continually cast, but secretly into the fire.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Then said Christian, what means this? The interpreter answered, this
- 17:18Speaker 1: is Christ, who continually, with the oil of his grace,
- 17:22Speaker 1: maintains the work already begun in the heart, by the
- 17:25Speaker 1: means of which, notwithstanding what the devil can do, the
- 17:28Speaker 1: souls of his people proved gracious still second Corinthius twelve nine.
- 17:34Speaker 1: And in that thou sawest that the man stood behind
- 17:37Speaker 1: the wall to maintain the fire. This is to teach
- 17:40Speaker 1: thee that it is hard for the tempted to see
- 17:43Speaker 1: how this work of great is maintained in the soul.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I saw also that the interpreter took him again by
- 17:50Speaker 1: the hand, and led him into a pleasant place, where
- 17:53Speaker 1: was built a stately palace, beautiful to behold, at the
- 17:57Speaker 1: sight of which Christian was greatly delighted. He saw also
- 18:01Speaker 1: upon the top thereof certain persons walking who were clothed
- 18:05Speaker 1: all in gold. Then said Christian, may we go in thither.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Then the interpreter took him and led him up towards
- 18:14Speaker 1: the door of the palace, And behold at the door
- 18:17Speaker 1: stood a great company of men, as desirous to go in,
- 18:20Speaker 1: but durst not. They also set a man at a
- 18:23Speaker 1: little distance from the door, at a table side, with
- 18:26Speaker 1: a book and his inkhorn before him, to take the
- 18:29Speaker 1: names of them that should enter therein. He saw also
- 18:33Speaker 1: that in the doorway stood many men in armor to
- 18:36Speaker 1: keep it, being resolved to do to the men that
- 18:39Speaker 1: would enter, what hurt and mischief they could. Now was
- 18:43Speaker 1: Christian somewhat in a maze. At last, when every man
- 18:48Speaker 1: started back for fear of the armed men, Christian saw
- 18:51Speaker 1: a man of a very stout countenance come up to
- 18:54Speaker 1: the man that sat there to write saying, set down
- 18:57Speaker 1: my name, sir the rich. When he ye done, he
- 19:01Speaker 1: saw the man draw his sword and put a helmet
- 19:03Speaker 1: on his head, and rushed towards the door upon the
- 19:06Speaker 1: armed men, who laid upon him with deadly force. But
- 19:10Speaker 1: the man, not at all discouraged, fell to cutting and
- 19:13Speaker 1: hacking most fiercely. So, after he had received and given
- 19:17Speaker 1: many wounds to those that attempted to keep him out
- 19:20Speaker 1: Matthew eleven twelve Acts fourteen twenty two, he cut his
- 19:26Speaker 1: way through them all and pressed forward into the palace,
- 19:29Speaker 1: at which there was a pleasant voice heard from those
- 19:31Speaker 1: that were within, even of those that walked upon the
- 19:34Speaker 1: top of the palace, saying, come in, Come, in eternal glory,
- 19:39Speaker 1: thou shalt win. So he went in and was clothed
- 19:43Speaker 1: with such garments as stay. Then Christian smiled and said,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I think verily I know the meaning of this. Now,
- 19:51Speaker 1: said Christian, let me go. Hence, nay, stay, said the interpreter,
- 19:56Speaker 1: till I have showed thee a little more, and after
- 19:59Speaker 1: that thou shalt go on thy way. So he took
- 20:03Speaker 1: him by the hand again and led him into a
- 20:05Speaker 1: very dark room, where there sat a man in an
- 20:08Speaker 1: iron cage. Now the man to look on seemed very sad.
- 20:12Speaker 1: He sat with his eyes looking down to the ground,
- 20:15Speaker 1: his hands folded together, and he sighed as if he
- 20:18Speaker 1: would break his heart. Then said Christian, what means this,
- 20:24Speaker 1: at which the interpreter bid him talk with the man.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Then said Christian to the man, what art thou? The
- 20:32Speaker 1: man answered, I am what I was not once? Christian?
- 20:38Speaker 1: What wast thou once the man? The man said, I
- 20:43Speaker 1: was once a fair and flourishing professor Luke eight thirteen,
- 20:48Speaker 1: both in mine own eyes and also in the eyes
- 20:51Speaker 1: of others. I once was, as I thought, fair for
- 20:54Speaker 1: the celestial city, and had then even joy at the
- 20:57Speaker 1: thoughts that I should get thither. Christian, Well, but what
- 21:02Speaker 1: art thou now, the man? I am now a man
- 21:06Speaker 1: of despair, and am shut up in it? As in
- 21:09Speaker 1: this iron cage I cannot get out? Oh now I cannot, Christian?
- 21:16Speaker 1: But how camest thou into this condition? The man I
- 21:22Speaker 1: left off to watch and be sober. I laid the
- 21:25Speaker 1: reins upon the neck of my lusts. I sinned against
- 21:28Speaker 1: the light of the Word and the goodness of God.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I have grieved the spirit, and he is gone. I
- 21:34Speaker 1: tempted the devil, and he has come to me. I
- 21:37Speaker 1: have provoked God to anger, and he has left me.
- 21:41Speaker 1: I have so hardened my heart that I cannot repent, then,
- 21:46Speaker 1: said Christian to the interpreter. But is there no hope
- 21:50Speaker 1: for such a man as this ask him, said the interpreter.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Christian then said, Christian, is there no hope? But you
- 22:00Speaker 1: must be kept in the iron cage of despair? The man,
- 22:05Speaker 1: no none at all? Christian. Why the son of the
- 22:10Speaker 1: blessed is very pitiful the man I have crucified him
- 22:16Speaker 1: to myself afresh Hebrews six six. I have despised his
- 22:21Speaker 1: person Luke nineteen fourteen. I have despised his righteousness. I
- 22:28Speaker 1: have counted his blood an unholy thing. I have done
- 22:31Speaker 1: despite to the spirit of grace Hebrews ten twenty nine.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Therefore I have shut myself out of all the promises,
- 22:40Speaker 1: and there now remains to me nothing but threatenings, dreadful threatenings,
- 22:44Speaker 1: faithful threatenings of certain judgment, and fiery indignation, which shall
- 22:49Speaker 1: devour me as an adversary. Christian, For what did you
- 22:55Speaker 1: bring yourself into this condition? The man for the last
- 23:00Speaker 1: pleasures and prophets of this world? In the enjoyment of
- 23:03Speaker 1: which I did then promise myself much delight. But now
- 23:07Speaker 1: every one of those things also bite me and gnaw
- 23:10Speaker 1: me like a burning worm. Christian, But canst thou not
- 23:15Speaker 1: now repent and turn the man? God hath denied me repentance.
- 23:21Speaker 1: His word gives me no encouragement to believe. Yea himself
- 23:25Speaker 1: hath shut me up in this iron cage. Nor can
- 23:28Speaker 1: all the men in the world let me out, Oh, eternity, eternity,
- 23:33Speaker 1: How shall I grapple with the misery that I must
- 23:35Speaker 1: meet with in eternity? Interpreter? Then said the interpreter to Christian.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Let this man's misery be remembered by THEE and be
- 23:46Speaker 1: an everlasting caution to THEE. Christian, Well said Christian, this
- 23:52Speaker 1: is fearful. God. Help me to watch and to be sober,
- 23:56Speaker 1: and to pray that I may shun the cause of
- 23:58Speaker 1: this man's misery. Sir, is it not time for me
- 24:02Speaker 1: to go on my way? Now? Interpreter tarry till I
- 24:07Speaker 1: shall show THEE one thing more, and then thou shalt
- 24:10Speaker 1: go on thy way. So he took Christian by the
- 24:14Speaker 1: hand again and led him into a chamber where there
- 24:17Speaker 1: was one rising out of bed, and as he put
- 24:20Speaker 1: on his raiment, he shook and trembled. Then said Christian,
- 24:25Speaker 1: why doth this man thus tremble? The interpreter then bid
- 24:29Speaker 1: him tell to Christian the reason of his so doing.
- 24:33Speaker 1: So he began and said, this night, as I was
- 24:37Speaker 1: in my sleep, I dreamed, and behold, the heavens grew
- 24:40Speaker 1: exceeding black. Also it thundered and lightened in most fearful,
- 24:44Speaker 1: wise that it put me into an agony. So I
- 24:47Speaker 1: looked up in my dream and saw the clouds rack
- 24:49Speaker 1: at an unusual wait, upon which I heard a great
- 24:53Speaker 1: sound of a trumpet, and saw also a man sitting
- 24:56Speaker 1: upon a cloud, attended with the thousands of heaven They
- 25:00Speaker 1: were all in flaming fire. Also the heavens were in
- 25:03Speaker 1: a burning flame. I heard then a voice saying, arise,
- 25:08Speaker 1: ye dead, and come to judgment. And with that the
- 25:12Speaker 1: rocks rent the graves opened, and the dead that were
- 25:15Speaker 1: therein came forth. Some of them were exceeding glad and
- 25:19Speaker 1: looked upward, and some sought to hide themselves under the mountains.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Then I saw the man that sat upon the cloud
- 25:26Speaker 1: opened the book and bid the world draw near. Yet
- 25:31Speaker 1: there was by reason of a fierce flame that issued
- 25:34Speaker 1: out and came from before him, a convenient distance between
- 25:38Speaker 1: him and them, as between the judge and the prisoners
- 25:41Speaker 1: at the bar. First Corinthians fifteen, First the Selonians four sixteen,
- 25:48Speaker 1: Jude fifteen, John five, twenty eight and twenty nine, Second
- 25:53Speaker 1: Thessalonians one eight to ten, Revelations twenty eleven to fourteen,
- 26:00Speaker 1: Isaiah twenty six, twenty one, Micah seven, sixteen and seventeen,
- 26:05Speaker 1: Psalmed five four fifty one to three, Malachi three two
- 26:12Speaker 1: and three, Daniel seven nine and ten. I heard it
- 26:17Speaker 1: also proclaimed to them that attended on the man that
- 26:19Speaker 1: sat on the cloud gathered together the tears, the chaff,
- 26:24Speaker 1: and stubble, and cast them into the burning lake Matthew
- 26:28Speaker 1: three twelve, eighteen thirty twenty four thirty Malachi four one.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And with that the bottomless pit opened just whereabout I stood,
- 26:40Speaker 1: out of the mouth of which there came, in an
- 26:42Speaker 1: abundant manner, smoke and coals of fire, with hideous noises.
- 26:47Speaker 1: It was also said to the same persons gather my
- 26:50Speaker 1: wheat into the ghana Luke three seventeen. And with that
- 26:54Speaker 1: I saw many catched up and carried away into the clouds,
- 26:58Speaker 1: but I was left behind first the Salonians four sixteen
- 27:03Speaker 1: and seventeen. I also sought to hide myself, but I
- 27:06Speaker 1: could not, for the man that sat upon the cloud
- 27:09Speaker 1: still kept his eye upon me. My sins also came
- 27:12Speaker 1: into my mind, and my conscience did accuse me on
- 27:15Speaker 1: every side Romans two fourteen and fifteen. Upon this I
- 27:20Speaker 1: awakened from my sleep, Christian. But what was it that
- 27:26Speaker 1: made you so afraid of this sight the man? Why?
- 27:31Speaker 1: I thought that the day of judgment was come, and
- 27:34Speaker 1: that I was not ready for it. But this frightened
- 27:37Speaker 1: me most that the angels gathered up several and left
- 27:40Speaker 1: me behind. Also, the pit of Hell opened her mouth
- 27:44Speaker 1: just where I stood. My conscience too afflicted me, and
- 27:49Speaker 1: as I thought, the judge had always his eye upon me,
- 27:52Speaker 1: showing indignation in his countenance. Then said the interpreter to Christian,
- 27:58Speaker 1: hast thou considered all these things, Christian? Yes, and they
- 28:04Speaker 1: put me in hope and fear. Interpreter, Well, keep all
- 28:09Speaker 1: things so in thy mind, that they may be as
- 28:12Speaker 1: a goad in thy sides, to prick thee forward in
- 28:15Speaker 1: the way thou must go. Then, Christian began to gird
- 28:18Speaker 1: up his loins and to address himself to his journey.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Then said the interpreter. The comforter be always with THEE,
- 28:26Speaker 1: good Christian, to guide THEE in the way that leads
- 28:29Speaker 1: to the city. So Christian went on his way, saying,
- 28:33Speaker 1: here I have seen things rare and profitable, things pleasant, dreadful,
- 28:38Speaker 1: things to make me stable in what I have begun
- 28:41Speaker 1: to take in hand. Then let me think on them
- 28:44Speaker 1: and understand wherefore they showed me were, And let me
- 28:47Speaker 1: be thankful, O good interpreter, to THEE. End Part one,
- 28:53Speaker 1: The second stage
