- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Hockey Coaches Show. We're live at bear
- 0:02Speaker 1: Smokehouse Barbecue. The Big Boss Ben Darnell here hooking the
- 0:04Speaker 1: hook seat, wearing the hook seat today, rep in the
- 0:06Speaker 1: hook siet. He always reps that hook. See he wears
- 0:08Speaker 1: that all the time in the office. Fact, you said,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Penders on today. Baseball starts next weekendall.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Starts Friday morning at where are they playing balls?
- 0:19Speaker 3: Get Ben and ice bus shirt?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I have the Fenway shirt, the shirt from
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Fenway game with the hook See. Actually were that?
- 0:29Speaker 3: That's pretty cool?
- 0:30Speaker 1: It is.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I love it.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I love the throwbacks. It's say Connecticut on them. Yeah,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I agree, I love those. Should be your road uniforms.
- 0:35Speaker 3: All right, we'll wear that in the next road game.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Bob Okay, on your suggestion.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well you don't wow Northeastern X road game on the
- 0:45Speaker 1: March first. What are you gonna do with yourself? I mean,
- 0:47Speaker 1: you've been on the road except for one home game
- 0:50Speaker 1: in January. Now it's you have the luxury of not
- 0:54Speaker 1: getting out. Well you do get on a bus to
- 0:55Speaker 1: go to Hartford. Okay, that happens, but you're gonna be
- 0:58Speaker 1: in the state for a while. I mean this. My
- 1:00Speaker 1: wife is going to love me, yeah, or she's gonna
- 1:03Speaker 1: be sick of.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true too. Yeah. She's going away anyway. She's
- 1:06Speaker 3: going away for spring break with my daughter.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So that's nice.
- 1:09Speaker 1: They're going to have the whole house to yourself.
- 1:10Speaker 3: That's a vacation for me too, right. Yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Is there a dog or a cat in the house?
- 1:14Speaker 3: Hell no, no, no, Oh.
- 1:19Speaker 2: My two kids are enough.
- 1:21Speaker 3: That's it. That was That's one thing we both agree on.
- 1:25Speaker 3: No dogs, no cats.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's like having another kid.
- 1:27Speaker 1: It certainly is. In fact, my wife I was driving
- 1:29Speaker 1: up forty four coming from basketball yesterday and I saw
- 1:32Speaker 1: a sign that said little you know labs for some
- 1:34Speaker 1: black labs. And I said, I said, do you want
- 1:36Speaker 1: a dog? I said, jokingly said that because I know
- 1:38Speaker 1: she doesn't.
- 1:38Speaker 2: She goes, no, no dogs.
- 1:39Speaker 3: We might fight like cats and dogs sometimes, but we
- 1:42Speaker 3: don't want him in the house.
- 1:43Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:44Speaker 1: We got Viking Gustavsen Nyberg coming up, young man out
- 1:47Speaker 1: of Stockholm, Sweden who came over with Nick Perusi from
- 1:50Speaker 1: Northern Michigan. What about the impact of this big, big
- 1:54Speaker 1: burly defenceman and he's had.
- 1:56Speaker 3: On your program. Yeah, he's been great. He was a
- 1:58Speaker 3: late ad And and you know it's ironic that you
- 2:04Speaker 3: have Hudson and Viking on the same night because the
- 2:09Speaker 3: backstory there was Viking would have never come if Hudson
- 2:12Speaker 3: didn't give up his scholarship in the summer. Now, we
- 2:19Speaker 3: used nil money to make Hudson whole. But I went
- 2:25Speaker 3: to him and I asked him, and this shows you
- 2:26Speaker 3: what kind of team player he is. I said, we
- 2:28Speaker 3: have a chance to get a really good defenseman. Would
- 2:31Speaker 3: you be open to giving up your scholarship because to
- 2:34Speaker 3: try to get Hudson's on a graduate He's on a
- 2:40Speaker 3: certificate program as a graduate, which is considerably cheaper than
- 2:47Speaker 3: a foreign student coming in paying full freight at Yukon.
- 2:52Speaker 3: And Hudson was open to it. And that's the one
- 2:56Speaker 3: benefits of nil that you know, you in now make
- 3:01Speaker 3: Hudson hole through nil, and we were able to do that.
- 3:07Speaker 3: But you know that's the type of kidious. He's just
- 3:10Speaker 3: a selfless kid. I'll always be indebted to him because
- 3:14Speaker 3: he showed loyalty in coming back for a fifth year.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He's an incredible leader. I can't say enough about him
- 3:20Speaker 3: as a as a person. And as you said today,
- 3:24Speaker 3: you could have talked to him forever and that's how
- 3:25Speaker 3: he is. Yeah, and Vikings just he's been a great
- 3:29Speaker 3: addition to our defensive corps. He's long, he's coachable, he's
- 3:34Speaker 3: got sneaky, subtle offense that people probably don't realize, like
- 3:41Speaker 3: he's very good at getting pucks down in the net.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Just really enjoy coaching both of them.
- 3:49Speaker 2: What is Viking at six five six six, two hundred
- 3:53Speaker 2: and something pounds. What's his temperament like though off of
- 3:55Speaker 2: the ice when you.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Want pretty mild manner. Yeah, yeah, Like I said, very coachable,
- 4:00Speaker 3: He's open to a lot of coaching, very very mild mannered.
- 4:05Speaker 3: But he plays hard in the game. He blocks a
- 4:08Speaker 3: lot of shots. He is physical when he needs to be.
- 4:11Speaker 3: And when you have that type of length and you
- 4:14Speaker 3: can skate like he can skate, he has a chance
- 4:17Speaker 3: to be a pro at some point.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Do you know where Philip played in Malmo, Sweden? Is
- 4:24Speaker 2: there any overlap between where Viking grew up?
- 4:26Speaker 3: No, I don't think they ever had any overlap.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Do you have a nickname for Viking?
- 4:31Speaker 2: You guys just call him Viking. It's pretty good just
- 4:33Speaker 2: to call him.
- 4:34Speaker 3: It's a pretty cool name, right, right, Yeah, I don't
- 4:39Speaker 3: know Vike sometimes Vikes, I don't know everybody shortens.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, we've got Hudson coming up too. I mean,
- 4:48Speaker 1: he is basically spoken for himself, but he spoke very
- 4:50Speaker 1: highly of his two line mates today and the connection
- 4:53Speaker 1: that those three have. And if you're just joining us,
- 4:56Speaker 1: it's Hudson gender with Jake Richard and Joey Muldowney as
- 4:59Speaker 1: that line and they have been extremely productive, particularly on
- 5:02Speaker 1: the power plays of late. But it just seems with
- 5:04Speaker 1: talking to Hudson today, those three have a really good connection,
- 5:07Speaker 1: not only on the ice but off the ice excellent.
- 5:09Speaker 3: They've been I thought all weekend they were dangerous every
- 5:14Speaker 3: time they were on the ice. And Joey they're all
- 5:18Speaker 3: three different players. Joey's a waterbug that can finish and
- 5:25Speaker 3: you know, compete well, they all compete hard. Hudson's a
- 5:29Speaker 3: more cerebral, you know, two hundred foot player, and Jake
- 5:34Speaker 3: has just got a ridiculous stick. He sees the game
- 5:40Speaker 3: really well. He makes quick decisions, but he's one of
- 5:44Speaker 3: those players that he picks pucks out of the air.
- 5:47Speaker 3: The puck finds him and he's like a magnet to
- 5:51Speaker 3: that puck and he makes awesome plays when he has it.
- 5:55Speaker 2: As a coach, when you're building the lines and the
- 5:59Speaker 2: deep heirings depairings are a little more set in stone typically,
- 6:02Speaker 2: so with the way that this offense has been working,
- 6:05Speaker 2: when you're able to go to a Hudson and say, hey,
- 6:06Speaker 2: you played with Jake and Joey and that for those
- 6:09Speaker 2: guys feels like, Okay, that's that's who we're going to
- 6:12Speaker 2: battle with every night. What kind of luxury is it
- 6:15Speaker 2: for you when you when you have some lines that
- 6:17Speaker 2: you can just plug and play and you don't have
- 6:19Speaker 2: to tinker with.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You know, we tinkered quite a bit on Saturday. I
- 6:24Speaker 3: think you have your set lines and you love to
- 6:28Speaker 3: get into a rhythm of a game where you can
- 6:30Speaker 3: just roll lines and they're all going. But that's not
- 6:35Speaker 3: really it doesn't happen all the time. It's not realistic
- 6:41Speaker 3: that that's going to happen game in and game out.
- 6:44Speaker 3: And when that doesn't happen, then you have to tinker
- 6:46Speaker 3: a little bit, and we did on Saturday, and I
- 6:49Speaker 3: thought that got us back in the game when we
- 6:51Speaker 3: started to do that a little bit. And part of
- 6:53Speaker 3: the reason was because we weren't winning face offs, so
- 6:55Speaker 3: I tried to mix it up and get some guys
- 6:57Speaker 3: that could win some face offs for us. But when
- 7:00Speaker 3: you to answer your question, when you have four lines
- 7:05Speaker 3: that you feel like you can roll and you're not
- 7:07Speaker 3: worried about matchups, that's a great luxury to have.
- 7:10Speaker 1: All right, get ready. Viking, Gustavs and Nyberg's coming up next.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Dan Hudson Shando a really good conversation with both of them.
- 7:18Speaker 1: By the way, Viking has a nice big Swedish flagging
- 7:20Speaker 1: up on the wall in his room, just in case
- 7:22Speaker 1: you didn't know.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That, would you?
- 7:24Speaker 1: We didn't.
- 7:25Speaker 2: We didn't.
- 7:26Speaker 3: It's like, how did you know that?
- 7:28Speaker 1: And he's got a night and he's had a nice
- 7:29Speaker 1: hockey jersey from his junior days in Sweden hanging up. Okay, yeah,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I guess that's a normal thing with hockey players. Most
- 7:35Speaker 1: of them have jerseys hanging up on their walls.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I guess, So I guess I don't have any in
- 7:39Speaker 3: my house.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Okay, if you had a hockey jersey hanging up in
- 7:41Speaker 1: your house, who would you have? Would you have your
- 7:43Speaker 1: old one or.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Would I don't know. Give me some time to think
- 7:48Speaker 3: about that. I'll give you an answer when I come.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You played it? Was it a polar bear on there?
- 7:52Speaker 3: Or was it all? But there was an actual like
- 7:56Speaker 3: one too, not the new ones that are. I had
- 8:00Speaker 3: an angry one.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Love it all right, Viking, Gustus and Nieberg's next on
- 8:04Speaker 1: The Yukon Hockey Coaches Show from Learfield, Stay with Us,
