- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome then, everybody, and happy holidays to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: My name is Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: I'm feeling pretty good.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: I am broadcasting live from the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Metro, home of the Oklahoma Sooners, and I am feeling pretty dang red raider-y on this fine morning.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: That's good, man.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Up there visiting the fam for the Christmas holiday season.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: I am.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: It's pretty crisp over here.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: They got a lot of snow right before I got here.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: But uh it's just all that's all the weather is today, Sooner Tears.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: Very nice.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: We are winners.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech basketball wins against Oklahoma last night.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Great deal.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: We're gonna get to that here in a minute.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: But we got to start with some football news because you know, we always have to hurt ourselves a little more.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Um back every episode, even though the season is over.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: But hopefully this will be good news.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, Texas Tech has hired a new offensive coordinator.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Sonny Cumbee is returning to Lubbock, Texas to become the offensive coordinator with uh Matt Wells.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: And I don't I don't know, man.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: I'm excited about this hire.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Dude, I like this hire too.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, if the one thing to get you excited about it is he's a former red raider.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Uh having an alumni on staff kind of re-energizes the fan base a little bit because it's kind of like a prodigal son coming home.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: And he's had some some good years at DCU.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: And I think hiring a guy with power five experience, an offensive coordinator, within the same conference, even, is kind of a good uh starting block to uh begin this new era of Matt Wells.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: So I think it gives me hope for a totally different offense we're gonna witness.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna see a return to uh the old more old school Texas tech we know.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna see a little more slinging around and uh spreading the ball out than we did before with Wells.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: No doubt, no doubt.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: We should kind of go through what his journey to get to this point.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: Uh obviously, former Texas Tech quarterback, 2004 is the season that he played in, where we made the holiday bowl and beat Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch in said bowl.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Had a short uh professional career in kind of the NFL, kind of on and off rosters and arena football league.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: So he started coaching at back at Texas Tech in the 2013 season.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: He was the co-offensive coordinator for Cliff's first year alongside Eric Morris, and then was hired by Gary Patterson at TCU from 2014 to 2020.
- 3:22SPEAKER_02: He was the co-offensive coordinator at TCU from 2014 to 2016, alongside Doug Meachum.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: And then he was the main offensive coordinator at TCU from 2017 to last season.
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: So now he returns.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm happy with this hire.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: I'm I, you know, former tech guy.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: It seemed like there was some mixed reviews, though, from uh a lot of tech fans on Twitter at least.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Yes, I think they're looking at TCU's recent records and offensive performance.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I I think that's a that's a fair assessment, but you're they're they're very they're looking at it at a very small scope.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, Sonny Cumbie still took TCU to a Big 12 championship, something Texas Tech has never been able to do at all.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: So even under our greatest offensive years.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So the the guy can clearly string together some some good offenses, and because his first year, that was the big controversy year in TCU, was whether they if they were going to be in the playoffs or not.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Remember that?
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: That's why they won uh 12 games.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: They went 12 and 1.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: So they in the next year they went 11 and 2.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: And their uh their their Big 12 championship year, they went 11 and 3, which was just a few years ago.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: That was 2017.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: So if you want to widen that very short scope that some of those fans are having, you can see a very good year.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: And as Texas Deck fans, I don't think we're gonna complain too much about winning six wins in this COVID year like CCU did.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: They really turned it around, or winning seven games uh after the Big 12 year, which was apparently more of a rebuilding year.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: So it's it's I I I feel confident that that this is a more safe hire.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Um, I think we know what we're gonna get, which is a good thing.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: I think we all want to see a return to a more explosive offense, and I think that's exactly the bill we just we've we picked up with Sonny.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: And especially with how the defense performed last year, just to have an average to a little above average offense, we would have won, you know, a few more games.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: So uh I think this is an improvement, especially, and I think a lot of people would have been an improvement over David Yost, but uh I am happy that he is a red raider.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna be crapping on this hire, you know, immediately.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: I I think that's pretty stupid until you see the actual team perform.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: And uh I think uh one thing that TCU fans are apparently gonna be missing is his recruiting ability.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Apparently, he's a pretty solid recruiter, and obviously he's he's got some quarterback experience.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's he's worked with some pretty dang good quarterbacks over there at TCU.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: And I I'm really excited to kind of bring that uh familiar, familiar Texas Tech feeling back.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: And the guy is a West Texan, he's from Abilene, he went to Texas Tech, he played at Texas Tech.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: So the guy will know how to sell Texas Tech, which I think is very good on a on a school that already gets some solid offensive talent.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: I you know, it doesn't hurt to boost that even more because TCU is one of the better recruiting teams in the Big 12, they're always in the top half normally.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm hoping to kind of you know pick up that pipeline and move it to Loving with Sonny for sure.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: So Sonny Cumby returns to Texas Tech.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, good news on that front.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: We should also mention what's that?
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: That hope.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Are we are we feeling the return of feeling positivity?
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we always we we were gonna feel that anyway.
- 6:39SPEAKER_02: That's that's how we work.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: We get these positive vibes going, and then they can't stop.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: It's it's hard to stop them.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: So welcome back home, Sonny.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, welcome back home.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Uh, we do we should mention some more players announced that they are gonna return to the team for their uh extra year of eligibility that they got.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're all up to a lot of defensive guys.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Um, Schooler Jeffers, we already mentioned, but Jacob Morganstern and other linebackers coming back.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: Eric Monroe is now coming back, Demarcus Fields coming back, Seth Collins for his seventh year of uh college, of college football.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: He's coming back.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Um, that man has experienced injury upon injury, so hopefully he can finally play a little bit this season.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Uh Travis Koontz on the offensive front and McLean Mannix, who did not get to play, I think at all last year because of injury.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: So those guys returning, that's good news.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: Uh, get get some uh continuity with this team.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: And uh I you know it's always good when you get these guys returning.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: Man, with with a defense that's trending in the right way and perceptibly from tech fans, you do you love hearing all these guys coming back, especially the superstars.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: You know, those linebackers you mentioned, everyone's gonna be hyped as heck to get those guys back on the field.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: So, again, another you know, sense of hope that can kind of return to the program.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: You know, it's not all doom and gloom yet.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: You know, we shouldn't give up on this well staff yet.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, not none of us are completely sold that he's the guy yet, but I mean that there's definitely a chance.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: I'm waiting for him to prove it.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: I think we all are.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: So I'm really excited about it.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I'm really happy that we're bringing this defensive production back because it was absolutely treading in the right direction, in my opinion.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: And it looks like we're getting a couple transfers coming in.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: I know Wells, we didn't have, we only had 10 players, I think, in this recruiting class.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: So Wells was kind of putting a few scholarships on the side to get these uh incoming grad transfers and just regular transfers uh coming in.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: It looks like we have two defensive backs from the ACC, uh, an NC State guy, Malik Dunlap, uh 6'4, 220, three years of eligibility left.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: So great size there for a defensive back.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: We're not used to having guys that are that are that big over here.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: So that's good news.
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: And then Marquise Waters from Duke, another defensive back, 6'1, 200, uh 35 career starts for him, has multiple seasons that ended with a PFF grade of 73.1 or better, which to put that into some context, the only Red Raiders to do that since 2014 are Justice Parker, Douglas Coleman, and Zach McPherson.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: So all three of those guys had solid outings for the Red Raiders, have had solid careers.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: And uh that info was from Ben Golan on Twitter.
- 9:10SPEAKER_02: Gotta give a shout out to that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Love the ability that Matt Wells is kind of showing with his transfer uh pitch sales pitches because he's bringing in some good guys out of the sales, uh sales, the transfer portal.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Um, so I want two things we will not turn down at Texas Tech, especially in the state the football program is in, is size and experience.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: So I'm really excited to get these guys.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: I will probably get in and immediately make an impact, which is what we're looking for, because we are absolutely in win now mode to quote uh Kirby and Matt Wells and everybody.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: So it's it's time to start putting some W on the board.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: And this is, I think, a great way to start it.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: And and while there is good things, players coming back and players transferring into tech, there's also the guys that are leaving, uh, TJ Vasher, Eli Howard, Thomas Leggett, Connor Killian are leaving the program.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: A lot of, you know, some of those guys were were seniors, uh, they're just trying to, you know, try their luck in the NFL and hopefully everything works out for them.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: We also have a couple guys that have entered into the transfer portal.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Keyshawn Carter, we already mentioned uh there's some rumors that maybe we're trying to get him back into the program.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: He's only entered his name into the transfer portal.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: That doesn't automatically mean that they're leaving, but it does mean that they're looking at all their options.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: So uh, you know, Keyshawn coming off that injury, hopefully, uh we can kind of recruit him back.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: And also Alex Hogan, defensive back, he was a young guy, didn't get a lot of reps last year.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, I know he played a lot in that first Houston Baptist game, and I was upset watching him.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: I think I mentioned that on the pod of how bad he was.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: But um, you know, wish the best for him.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: You know, hopefully they find a home.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: If if not come back, you know.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Oh sorry, if not come back, like Keyshawn.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: I Keyshawn, I'd love to add back.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: He see, Keyshawn was the guy I was gonna talk about for a second because it's with the hire of Sonny Cumby.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I'm hoping that can maybe sway him.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: You know, he has a because I'm I I think it's safe to assume that Sonny's gonna involve the receivers more.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: So I I think he can look for a little uh for some more explosive plays, you know, to to make him look better if he stays with the Sonny staff.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: So I think that's something to look forward to.
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: If if if that's maybe a pitch that he can listen to.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: And I think another thing to mention is Sonny Cumby.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Once he was brought on and hired on Twitter, we saw the recruits chiming in.
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, we saw Baron Morton post a picture of him and Sonny together working out.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: We also saw uh the new receiver, um, oh man, Joran Brantley.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: He posted uh he was all hyped about Cumby coming in.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: I guess he knows him pretty well.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: So uh that's good news.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: You know, get the young guys involved and get them uh attached to this hire real quick.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Have we heard anything from Zach McPherson?
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: No, he's still waiting on on uh he's still making that decision on whether to come back or not.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: I think I saw that he was a projected seventh-round pick in the NFL this year.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: So that I mean that's not the best.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: So I uh if I was him, I would come back.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: But I obviously, you know, if he if he wants to test and try his shot at the NFL, power to him.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: We're we wish him the best.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: But uh please come back, Zach, because you're one of our better players.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: He he made a big difference on defense this year.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: You know, he really stepped up his game.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: He'll heal his presence was felt on the field, which is something we haven't really seen much from our DVs.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: So um, I really hope he comes back.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: No doubt for sure.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: So I think a lot of good news really coming in uh lately.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: I it's how you look at it.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Uh obviously it's an opinionated thing, but I'm I'm happy with Gumby.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: I'm happy with the players returning, happy with these transfers that are coming in.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: So I think we'll still see some more action as the offseason progresses.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Um, and Matt Well's been doing good.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the last thought for me on the football would be it's uh we get a regular season, hopefully, next year.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: So hopefully, so practices will hopefully be so normal.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: So Sonny can work in his system, no problem.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: We have a lot of these guys that are that are early signees, they're just gonna come onto campus, so they're gonna get into the system immediately.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm hoping that also help you know mold everybody into the team that it's supposed to be.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: So we should talk about basketball because there were some good and some bad in these last couple games to start off Big 12 play.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech in Kansas.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about that game first.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: A 58-57 loss in Lubbock.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, disappointing.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, you you always want to beat these teams in Kansas.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: If you want to win the Big 12, you got to beat Kansas at least one time.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: So it stinks not being able to beat them at home.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: Uh obviously, COVID limited the capacity, and it wasn't the same as any old home game.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: So it's not going to be the same when we go to Kansas, too.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: So that's the bright side of things.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: But um I I think just some notes from this game.
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: Uh there was a lot of good and a lot of bad.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Um Kansas changed to a zone defense there at the end, and that was kind of the game changer.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Um like the last 10 minutes, they completely were playing man all game, and then they switched to a zone, and we did not know how to respond.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, we were settling for a lot of jump shots down the stretch, and I think that's really killed, that's what killed us.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: I mean that one was a hair puller outer, you know.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: When you have the big the blue blood of the conference at home and you have them to the wire, and there's you're waiting for us to pull away so bad.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: And there's just some things that just really kept us out of the game, free throws.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: We only made 60% of those.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: You gotta do better than that because Kansas was making 94% of theirs.
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: So it's that's a game changer because they've won by one point.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: That's that's a free throw margin.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: So it's it's so frustrating.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: They also did better from the field, um, uh both from just regular field goals and three-pointers.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: So it's it's so frustrating, especially when we're Kyler Edwards, your veteran, you're the basically leader of the team, didn't get a single bucket from the field.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's just it's so frustrating.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: So um deep, you know, defense played okay, but it's just uh I I just those little mistakes like free throws and bad field goal shooting just losses the game.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, to see the veterans perform like that was disappointing.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: Kyler, obviously O of nine from the field.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: That's uh you never want if he makes one shot, we win the game.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, and also Marcus Sanosilva, who's you know, your grad transfer coming in already, you know, a vocal leader at least, and zero points from him.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, you you got to get more production.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: As we saw in the OU game, what Marcus can do.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: And we'll talk about OU here in a second, but back to Kansas.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: It's just Mac and Shannon look awesome to start off.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, Big 12 play on the offensive side of things.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Um, Shannon, of course, on defense as well.
- 15:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, Mac still has a little work to do on that end.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: But uh, you love the aggressiveness from both of these guys.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Shannon, his jump shot is like that has improved so much, man.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: He's like, it's so good to see.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: You can tell how much work he put in in the offseason on it, and and it's showing.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Dude, I think it'd be hard pressed to find a tech fan that wouldn't say that one of those two players is the best player on the team.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: So I love the way those guys are shaping up.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: They look like they want to win this so bad.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And I think we have a real shot that we can get that big 12 throw boot if we want it.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: And I love the way those guys are going out there and wanting it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: So they're they're playing their butts off.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: I really hope it just only gets better.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: And uh, we should mention Tyreek Smith was a positive.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: He came in for some solid minutes.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: I'm sure his we'll see his minutes increase as the games progress, especially against bigger teams like West Virginia and Kansas uh and Texas as well, who's who have these you know big dudes, and you know, when Marcus gets in foul trouble, who which is gonna happen, he's a very physical player, and some games he's just he's just gonna get too physical a lot of times.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: So Tyreek's gonna have to get in there and uh have some solid minutes, and he showed that against Kansas.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, I was really happy with our rebounding.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: We really for Kansas having pretty much everybody, you know, bigger than us uh at every position, we really rebounded well.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: And I think we only lost the rebounding battle by five.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, and that's good news.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're getting the guards involved.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Uh Kyler, for how bad he shot, he's he's a great rebounder for helping out down there.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: And uh PV as well played awesome.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: He was super aggressive, got some offensive rebounds, got some put back uh buckets for us, and only seven turnovers.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: And so those are the positives out of Kansas.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: I compare that to Kansas's 16 turnovers, which is frustrating.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: It's like, dang, we really should have won this game.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: This one's gonna hurt looking back on the schedule.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh yeah, I agree with the rebounds thing because last season I that was a huge part like uh how how we struggled.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: It's because the rebounding game just wasn't in our favor.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: So I'm really happy to see those stats explode this, or at least get much better this season.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: So I think dividends in this defense is obviously the best ever you know out there.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: So our as long as we fine-tune our offensive free throws, I think we can give it anybody.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: I I guess a couple more negatives to point out.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, ball stuck too much on offense.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: We uh, you know, we run a motion offense, so that means the ball needs to be moving constantly.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: Guys passing the ball and moving, passing the ball and moving.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: We get guys like Jamarius Burton had a terrible game against Kansas, and he was just dribbling too much.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: He he just and going nowhere with it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, not uh not using his pick and rolls, not you not passing the ball off when he doesn't have anything.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: That's what you got to do in this motion offense.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: And Mac does it too sometimes where you're just holding the ball too long and trying to go one-on-one, and it's a team game.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: It's it, especially with Chris Beards' motion offense.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: So got to clean that up.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: And we did it, uh, we did a little bit against OU.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: We still had a few possessions there where we were holding it too long, uh, but that'll improve down the stretch.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, some pivotal mistakes down the stretch for us.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, we're not closing out games very well, and we we'll talk about that with OU too.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: But um uh PB, freshman, big freshman mistake on that inbounds play to give Kansas the lead, not switching there and giving them basically a wide open layup to take the lead with 10 seconds left.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Um, he's a freshman, he's gonna make mistakes.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: But for a guy that played well all game against Kansas to be really the the difference uh in this game stinks.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: Uh also the last offensive possession where Shannon pulled up and got blocked uh on the last shot of the game, should have drove it.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: He was playing great, he was getting to the line, he was doing everything great all game, and then he decided to just pull up and uh not a good decision from him there.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: But um I you know for us shooting so bad, we were six of 23 from three, and we were we missed seven free throws.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: So that can be cleaned up.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: That's good news to only lose by one point to the number five team in the country, now number three in the country.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's that's good news because we can we can improve on both of those.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: I think you wrap that up with a pretty bow.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: I just we gotta go get the birds with the shoes and the foe.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: We gotta get some revenge because I mean, road games are you know hard enough in college basketball.
- 19:43SPEAKER_01: So I hate that we gave up a home, but let's go let's just go get it back on them.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: But what we did is win a road game.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: We're one and oh on the road and 0-1 at home in Big 12 play.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: Weird thing to say, but we did go into Norman and beat the Sooners 69-67.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Um, much better all-around game.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, kind of a difference to start off.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Jamarius Burton replaced Kyler Edwards in the starting lineup um during this game.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: I think after Kyler's performance, uh, I and and Beard doesn't put too much stock in who starts because it's really about who plays the most.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: And Kyler did play a normal amount of minutes there.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but that was, I mean, we played we played much better.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Ball was moving, huge game from San O'Silva.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, I love it when he's the focal point of the offense on some of these possessions because he really, if we can get him the ball down low, I mean, he's such a difference maker because he can back up almost anybody in the league because he's so strong and so big, got these long arms, can finish over people.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Uh, and we saw it.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: I think he had 18 points in this game.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: So um big game from Marcus.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: I I wish I could contribute more to this game recap, but I was eating a big fat steak here in Oklahoma City with my family.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, I was able to catch the catch the beginning and the end, but uh some of these things that stand out to me that are instantly better.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: Free throws, 90%.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Thank God.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: And uh our free our our field goals, 50%.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Yes, so all a much better offensive performance from us.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: That's something that we that we've been missing all season, even against the uh the lesser opponents.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: It's just it's kind of been frustrating to watch our offense at times.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm happy to see us clean that up a bit.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: And uh obviously, our this was our defense, you know, had a tougher time against a good offensive uh uh team from OEU.
- 21:30SPEAKER_01: So I I mean we we we got the win, but again, what you just said against Kansas is um uh with the way we end games has been kind of frustrating.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: And it was frustrating this game.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, we should have won this game by more than just two points.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: Um and that goes down to a few things.
- 21:47SPEAKER_02: I uh I didn't like this.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: It was one of the first times I really disagreed with Coach Beard.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Um, and I and I hate doing that because I know he's such a good coach and he he knows the game much better than I do.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: But uh when you're up three points.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Like we were in those final few seconds, he chose to foul.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: And they were talking about this on the broadcast.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: And every commentator has this conversation when a team is in this situation when they're up three, and the and the team trying to tie the game has the ball.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: They want to foul him and get him to the free throw line because there's no chance that he makes a three-pointer or whatever.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: But there's so much that can go wrong with that.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: And I think you need to trust your team in that situation to just play uh straight up defense and to prevent them from tying the game and not fouling from three.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, and we saw it with this game that stuff, plenty of stuff went wrong.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: And oh, you could have very well tied that game, but they made some pivotal mistakes, and that's great uh for us.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: But um and you never want to give them free points, honestly.
- 22:47SPEAKER_02: You don't you don't want to give them free points.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: There was four seconds left.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: Uh both of our uh two of our big rebounders were fouled out in Marcus and Terrence Shannon, and you know, we have to grab that rebound, we have to secure that rebound off that miss free throw, and we couldn't do it.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: PV struggled down there, uh, and he struggled really all game.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: But uh oh, you should have tied that game, and they didn't, and uh we escaped with a win, but uh kind of a tough performance down the stretch for tech.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: For sure, you know what was haunting us with the free throws came back and haunted, haunted them at the end, too.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: They were missing their free throws.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, they were only 60% from their free throw line.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm glad I'm glad they kept sending Mac to the line.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: So that's yeah, seriously.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: He's the only one that's really been automatic from the free throw line this year, and and that's awesome because he's so aggressive and and draws a lot of fouls.
- 23:37SPEAKER_02: But uh Austin Reeves from OU is gonna be thinking about that miss tippin' for uh all of Christmas because that dude had a bunny and just missed it.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, right there.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: So it's good that we could have some good luck go our way for once.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: For sure, man.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: And it's I'm I'm glad our guys wouldn't got this.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: We needed this so bad.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: We finally got a win over a good team.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Nothing comes easy in the Big 12, especially on the road.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: So I'm very happy to go get this, especially against the Sooners.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: So um I I unfortunately I don't think I could add too much to this, uh, other than I was able to walk out of that steakhouse with my Texas Tech uh face mask on and just you know what's up?
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: What do you like about that?
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Because I added on like three TV in the bar.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: So oh yeah, that's that's that's some good stuff.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: You always want to wrap around Oklahoma when you're up there.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: But uh not not much on the basketball front.
- 24:32SPEAKER_02: Moving kind of towards this week.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: We have a game on the 29th against Incarnate Word, uh, who is not very good.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: We should take care of business against them.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: But then we pick it right back up on uh January 2nd, day after New Year's, your birthday actually, against Oklahoma State playing the Cowboys.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: So they've started off, I think, 0-1 or 0-2 in conference play.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we can make that 0-3 uh on our end.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: But not much to not much to preview until next week's pod.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: So we'll just kind of leave it at that for basketball.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: And really, I think unless you have anything else talking to tech sports, uh, I think we can move on to Song of the Week.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: For sure, man.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I just uh looking forward to another smacking of a little guy, unfortunately.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: But from our from the Alamo City, hey, we love we love Incarnate Word, they're just not very good.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: So and I hope we go get that dub on my birthday.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: That'd be a nice little Christmas gift, you know, since my parents are up here in uh Oklahoma.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: I like to come up here and be what's up.
- 25:31SPEAKER_02: So for sure.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: So hopefully uh we'll talk we'll talk about Oklahoma State next week, preview, preview that game and another one.
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: So uh Tristan, why don't you give me your holiday-themed song of the week?
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: All right, so I'm I'm gonna have to do a repeat, you know.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: So I got my first Christmas vinyl uh ever.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: You know, I got it, I got the Wade Bowen um Christmas album.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: And I think the the most fun song on that on there is this rendition of last Christmas.
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: It's just a bop.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: You're just kind of jigging the whole time.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: So something's short, sweet, and easy today for y'all's Christmas spirit.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: And uh hope you all enjoy that one.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Little country Christmas.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: You're also the first one to repeat artists, so you lose.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: Christmas doesn't really count.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: No, it counts.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: You lose a bit of a past.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: We were we were having this silent competition without really talking about it much.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: I don't know if Christmas really counts.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: You're first treasured listeners should shouldn't treasured listeners.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: Chime in because please just tell me I'm the winner.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: That is that is not that's not fair.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Christmas doesn't count.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: All right, what's yours, dude?
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: Whatever you say.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say, okay, so I like country Christmas albums, probably the best.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: Uh, a lot of artists do them.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: I think I'm trying to pick one that's I don't I don't know if it's underrated because this artist is well known, but Darius Rucker has a great Christmas album.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Home for the holidays, kind of a guy that not, I mean, you know, he's he's had some some number ones and that kind of stuff with wagon wheel and that kind of, but um, his Home for the Holidays Christmas album is great.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: He has some awesome songs on there.
- 27:21SPEAKER_02: The one I'm gonna put as my song of the week is let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Darius Rucker, it's great.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: It's it's a jam.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: He he has a great voice.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: I've always loved Darius Rucker, so uh Darius fans.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, big Darius guys over here.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: So, so um, yeah, that is my song of the week.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, weather outside is frightful, but the fire has so delightful, and sets me no place to go up.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Good one, man.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's definitely one of the better guys in Nashville that we can appreciate.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: And he's got it.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: I like his mystery, the the Grinch one on that one, too.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, the Grinch one's cool because that's not a song that not a lot of artists put on, so that's cool.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: I was thinking about doing that one.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: I was also thinking about doing Baby It's Cold Outside, but that's controversial.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: A little too controversial for this pod.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: It's 2020.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Baby It's Cold Outside is canceled.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: So I think that's gonna do it for our short little Christmas pod.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: I don't know how short it was.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: We probably ended up making this 30 or 40 minutes or so, but um, we wish all of y'all a Merry Christmas, happy holidays, whatever you celebrate around this time of year.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, happy, happy holidays to all of you listening to the Talk and Tech Pod.

- 29:38SPEAKER_04: You know, we fed off of it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 29:42SPEAKER_04: Uh great job, and um, you know, just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
