- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Have you ever felt like your
- 0:33body has a mind of its own? Because I have.
- 0:38I remember standing up at a restaurant and suddenly the
- 0:40floor felt far away. I wasn't dizzy.
- 0:43I was unplugged, like someone had hit the reset button on my
- 0:46body and forgot to tell me. Everyone else was living up
- 0:49their coats and chatting about desserts, and I was gripping the
- 0:52table, trying to keep my legs from giving out.
- 0:55I felt embarrassed. I felt confused and mostly I
- 0:58felt alone. That was Parkinson's too, but I
- 1:02didn't know it yet. It's called autonomic
- 1:05dysfunction and it affects more than 80% of us live with
- 1:07Parkinson's and yet no one talks about it.
- 1:11I didn't hear about when I was diagnosed, I didn't read about
- 1:13it, the pamphlets, but it showed up anyway.
- 1:16And these symptoms, they don't shake or shuffle, they whisper,
- 1:21but they mess with your life in big, loud ways, like sudden
- 1:25blood pressure crashes or urgency or bladder accidents,
- 1:30chronic Constipation, dripping sweat while everyone else is
- 1:34freezing or freezing while everyone else wears T-shirts,
- 1:39and yes, even intimacy issues that no one wants to admit.
- 1:44But these symptoms are invisible, but they're very
- 1:47real. So if you've ever found yourself
- 1:49thinking, is this Parkinson's or is it just me, you're really not
- 1:53alone. Share your story below, because
- 1:56today we're shining the light on what's been hiding in the dark.
- 2:00Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad,
- 2:04and the Reality. Real talk, real life, real
- 2:08community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 2:12Well, welcome to the channel and a big thanks, a big shout out to
- 2:15my loyal viewers and thanks for coming back.
- 2:18And if you're new here, my name is Bryce and this is Living with
- 2:20Parkinson's, The Good, the Bad, and the Reality.
- 2:23This channel is here to provide strength, hope, and support to
- 2:26people living with Parkinson's and to caregivers who love them.
- 2:30So I share real talk, raw stories, and sometimes a little
- 2:33humor because we need it. And if that sounds like
- 2:36something that kind of community that you're looking for, then
- 2:38hit the subscribe button and come on with us.
- 2:41We've got a lot to talk about today and and in the future.
- 2:44But today we're talking about the Parkinson's symptoms that
- 2:47nobody talks about, but we feel them anyway, right?
- 2:50Autonomic symptoms affect your autonomic nervous system, the
- 2:54part of your body that runs the behind the scenes show.
- 2:57It keeps your heart beating and rhythm.
- 2:59It tells your blood vessels what to do.
- 3:01It manages your digestion, your bladder, your body temperature,
- 3:05and even your sexual response. Basically, it's the stuff that
- 3:09you're not supposed to think about until it stops working,
- 3:11right? When Parkinson's effects this
- 3:14this system, things start to fall out of sync quietly but
- 3:18powerfully. These are the non motor symptoms
- 3:21and they are so often overlooked.
- 3:26For example, the orthostatic hypertension.
- 3:28Like for me, the blood pressure drops were sneaky at first.
- 3:32One day it was light headed, a light headed moment at the
- 3:35grocery store and the next I'm leaning on the soup display.
- 3:38Like I'm deeply moved by tomato bisque.
- 3:41It's a tough one. It sneaks up on you.
- 3:44Then there's Constipation. I spent years blaming food, you
- 3:49know, tried fiber, water, smoothies, you name it.
- 3:52But it wasn't just digestion, it was my, it was a slow down of my
- 3:56entire system. And once I understood it was
- 3:59that it was Parkinson's, then I could stop blaming myself.
- 4:03Then there is bladder issues. Now, when I go anywhere, my
- 4:08internal GPS isn't set to have fun, it's set to the nearest
- 4:12bathroom. And yes, I pretended to be on
- 4:14the phone call on a phone call just to cut in front of the just
- 4:17to cut to the front of the public restroom lines.
- 4:20Desperate times call for desperate measures sometimes.
- 4:24Then there's the excessive sweating.
- 4:26You know, have you ever sweat so much that you wonder if someone
- 4:29will ask you if you're OK? Well, I've had stucks.
- 4:33I have had shirts stuck to my back by 9:30 AM.
- 4:36Meanwhile, Carmen's wrapped up in a cozy sweater, saying it's
- 4:39kind of cold in here. Wild.
- 4:43And then there's sexual dysfunction.
- 4:45You know, let's talk about it because it matters.
- 4:48And not because it's performance, but because it's
- 4:51connection. Now, this disease messes with
- 4:55confidence, desire, physical response.
- 4:58It's hard to talk about it. But you're not the only one
- 5:01navigating this, and you're not alone.
- 5:04And just a heads up, the next episode, yeah, we're going
- 5:08there. We're going deep and we're going
- 5:09there. And I don't want you to miss it.
- 5:10It's going to be one for the ages.
- 5:13So, you know, check that out for sure.
- 5:16Now, these symptoms, they don't just show up in your gate.
- 5:21They don't make your handshake. They're internal, right?
- 5:25Often embarrassing to bring up. So most of us stay silent.
- 5:30Doctors sometimes don't ask, and we end up managing in the dark.
- 5:35But here's the thing. These symptoms matter to your
- 5:38quality of life. They're real, they're common,
- 5:40and they deserve answers. So here are a few questions that
- 5:44you might bring up at your next doctor visit.
- 5:47Could my dizziness? Could my dizziness with standing
- 5:50be Parkinson's related? What about this?
- 5:55What can I do about bladder urgency or accidents?
- 5:58Or I'm having trouble regulating my temperature?
- 6:01Why is it my medication contributing to these symptoms?
- 6:08You know, those are the type of questions.
- 6:10Those are the type of things, if you're dealing with this, that
- 6:13you need to bring up to your doctor.
- 6:15And again, how do you remember everything when you only see
- 6:17them once? It's every six months, if that.
- 6:20Well, I'm glad you asked. Track your symptoms, do them for
- 6:24a week, make sure at least a week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks in a
- 6:27month. Write them down and make sure
- 6:30that you paint a very clear picture of what you're going
- 6:33through, how often you're going through and what it was like.
- 6:36So if you're not sure what to say, you can say stuff like I've
- 6:40been experimenting with, I've been experiencing, sorry, some
- 6:43non motor symptoms and I think they might be connected to
- 6:46Parkinson's. And can we talk about that?
- 6:48That one sentence can open up a whole new level of care.
- 6:52Trust me, you want personalized care.
- 6:55And they, your, your health team, your doctors can't help
- 6:58you unless you really go there. And a lot of times you have to
- 7:01be the one to initiate it and go there.
- 7:03So I'm going to give you a few tools and some tricks that I
- 7:07picked up over the years, OK? Some are from experience and
- 7:10some are just from my amazing community.
- 7:12OK. And here's some things that will
- 7:14help #1 compression socks, you know, they help with dizziness
- 7:18and blood flow. I know, not the sexiest things
- 7:21in the world to wear, but guess what?
- 7:23If you're dealing with dizziness, try it.
- 7:26You got to try it. OK, Another trigger tip, salt or
- 7:32electrolyte boost, you know, with doctor's approval, they can
- 7:35really stabilize the pressure inside, right?
- 7:38Hydration. I know it seems simple, but
- 7:40really it's a game changer. You have to stay hydrated.
- 7:44You have to be that person carrying the water bottle around
- 7:47everywhere you go. I mean it, you'd have to do it
- 7:49and you have to get used to it. Bathroom mapping.
- 7:52OK, so I literally plan outings around bathroom access and
- 7:56there's no shame in that. So make sure if you're going
- 7:59out, if you're in a new place, make sure you check where those
- 8:01bathrooms are so that it just in case if you have to make a run,
- 8:04you know where you're going. So again, plan ahead, think
- 8:07ahead. It'll save those embarrassing
- 8:09moments down the road. Here's another thing, cooling
- 8:12towels or or sweat wicking fabrics, right?
- 8:16They are huge for overheating. So make sure, you know, dress
- 8:19light and and wear things that absorb the heat and the sweat
- 8:24rather than wearing things that are going to make it come out
- 8:26even better or bigger or stronger.
- 8:28OK, so that's very, very important.
- 8:30OK, how about this timed avoiding, right going before you
- 8:35need to can help avoid urgency. OK, so time voiding is what I
- 8:39call it. I don't know if that's a word or
- 8:40racism, but timed voiding. So you know what, just because I
- 8:45don't feel like, especially if I'm like, oh, if I'm travelling,
- 8:47if I'm in the airport and I'm about to get on the plane and
- 8:51I'm like, huh, I don't have to go to the restroom.
- 8:52Guess what? I go to the restroom and 90
- 8:55times out of 10, I can probably get a little out, right?
- 8:58You can make it happen, but make sure you kind of do that go
- 9:01before you need to. And that can help with the
- 9:04urgency, avoiding the urgency. And then, you know, meds, like
- 9:07there's some things like I can't spell, you know, you know me if
- 9:10you're a regular, you know me. I can't, I cannot pronounce
- 9:12these properly. But there's things like I think
- 9:14it's called Loriticone, right? Or, or Amidrin, right?
- 9:19And they can help, but only with the right specialist advice.
- 9:21So you ask your doctor if it's things that you're trying these
- 9:24little hacks and tricks, they're not working.
- 9:26Ask your doctor if there's some than you can take to help with
- 9:29it. Now, you know, these aren't
- 9:31cures, but they do make daily life a bit easier.
- 9:35And you know what? Sometimes that's everything.
- 9:38Aren't we looking for our daily life to get easier?
- 9:40I mean, don't we have enough to deal with?
- 9:42So again, just think this through their small, easy,
- 9:46actual quick stat stat steps, right?
- 9:49But they're important. So important to you, living that
- 9:51best life that you can with Parkinson's right now.
- 9:55You might not, you might not be able to see these symptoms in
- 9:58the mirror, but if they're if they're disrupting your life,
- 10:02then they're worth talking about.
- 10:03And if you've ever felt alone in this part of your Parkinson's
- 10:06journey, I hope today reminded you that you're not.
- 10:09You're not alone. Here's what I want you to do.
- 10:11Comment below. What symptoms surprised you the
- 10:13most? What helps you cope with it?
- 10:16And what do you wish someone would have told you sooner?
- 10:20And if you want a place to have these conversations off of
- 10:23YouTube, right, and a little bit more private, please check out
- 10:27the Inner Circle. It's our private community where
- 10:29people with Parkinson's and their caregivers can share,
- 10:31vent, laugh, learn, and belong. It's confidential and it's
- 10:35judgement free. And best of all, it's just real.

- 10:41There's a link in the description below.
- 10:43Now listen, you're not weak for struggling with invisible
